I

t was a change of pace for Halloween this year. Farrin moseyed on down the street adorned in the iconic Ghostbusters uniform instead of the Jack Skellington suit still hung up in his closet. In years past, he would dress as the Jack to his Sally, but since that wasn't quite possible, he decided on something new. He also turned trick-or-treating a little backward.

The man was twenty. Any semblance of that childhood experience was left in the rearview. He could make other kids' days, though. He bought up some name-brand stuff, dumped it in a bucket, and probed the streets for any child who didn't have much candy in their bags. If it was looking a little light, he might have bent the rules a little and fired up a little Chronokinesis to deposit some of the candies into their bags. 

Some people were out partying, but that wasn't often his thing. Plus, Farrin knew what it was to be disappointed on the holidays. Other kiddos wouldn't worry about getting the good candy if he could help it. 

"N' there's another one," he chirped with a smirk as he shot back to Josie's side after dropping a few Kit Kats into a kid's candy bag. 

Some people might have found his actions suspicious as if he had laced the candy with something, but all sugary goods were untouched. He wasn't training to be a hero just to hurt kids on the holidays. It was important that heroes not only save people's lives but also enhance them somehow. This was just a drop in that bucket, one that would go unseen, but he liked to think a few kids' days might have been better for it.

Ya know, this Halloween is quite an interesting one for Josie. For starters's it the first Halloween in a couple of years where Jo isn't camped out in some slums watching for some people to get back from their seasonal criminal spree and go to work.

Nope, this time she decided to dress up and enjoy the night. She had decided to dress up in a giant puffy otter onesie. True she could've gone with something a little more slimming or scary or cool, however there were problems with that. One is that PEACEKEEPER walks around in a very slimming and tight outfit. Unfortunately, the paranoia in the back of her head would not let her be in such a similar outfit ever in public. All it took was one person to put two and two together or she grunt a certain way. Next thing she knows, she'd have heroes and police busting down her dorm room door and then she has to punch another cop.

Not the best idea going forward.

So here she was being confused a little here and there for a cat and politely saying to those kids she was an otter, and maybe giving them not so much a big piece of candy as the kids who got it right.

Tis the season.

"Happi Halloween young heroes!" Josie spoke while a couple more kids dressed as heroes came their way and she kept a joyful face. It would be cool to at least see one homemade vigi, but the chances of that were quite low.

ell look at that, feelin' in the spirit o' things?" Farrin teased, watching Josie give the kiddos some candy. She had been through the night, but he was usually bouncing about on his candy distribution crusade and really had only seen her correcting the cat guesses. It did look a lot like a cat onesie, but he wasn't about to say as much. 

"How'd you spend most o' yer Halloweens back home?" He asked before offering some of his own experiences. "I had some good ones fer' a few years, but before long, it wasn't all that much." Mostly because he was mostly homeless.

After his mother's murder and father's imprisonment, Farrin lived on the streets, avoiding the authorities who would see him in an orphanage or back in Ireland with his nana. He loved the old bat, but he wasn't ready to leave his home. So, aside from a few years with a group called the Light Runners, he was something of a vagrant. He didn't talk about it often and wasn't about to start now. 

The conversation wouldn't last long, however. A shout reached down the street, loud over all the other voices and conversation. "Ghosts! Ghosts are attacking my husband!" A woman shouted. 

"I ain't afraid o' no ghosts," Farrin murmured, almost whimsically, before eyeing Josie, then staring in the woman's direction. "Time ta' break out the ghost trap," he continued with the references, though seriousness crept across his face. "Let's check it out." With that, he started down the street towards the woman.

"Oh, ya know the normal Halloweens most people I knew back in the state would have, the ole classic."

Now that wasn't a lie... technically. Josie knew a bunch of Vigi's big and small back then who spent their Halloween's holed up in some rat hole waiting for someone to act so they could stop them before anything crazy occurred. So in other words what was spoken for the record wasn't a lie, it was merely not all the truth.

"I'm sure Halloween must've been great, but hey I'm pretty sure you're making one of these kid's night quite a happy one coming out here and-"

Josie ended up cut off by a woman who was screaming down the street. The student couldn't help but blink several times while listening to the cry for help. Listening to Windy's quip she couldn't help but cringe, they weren't too horrible. However if they had to choose between being shot at or listening to his quips, she'd say fire away!

Okay, perhaps that's a little dramatic, still the truth.

So Farrin took off and Josie sat there for a second with the bowl ready to go until she realized. Underneath this outfit, she was wearing some shorts she picked up off the floor and a tank top. She couldn't break the character either and immediately sprint over to the place. So the next best thing had to happen.

She wobbled the whole way in her puffy otter outfit.

his had to be some Halloween prank or gimmick, right? Like, the chances sat at least around ninety percent. Unsubstantiated ghost sightings on Halloween were a staple of the holiday. But, the woman looked legitimately frightened, so even if this was some prank and her husband was absolutely fine, the students had some obligation to check it out.

“Dun’ worry, ma’am, we’re on it,” Farrin said, passing the woman by.

He could only imagine how ridiculous he looked, charging toward a supposedly legitimate ghost adorned in his ghostbuster costume. Small crowds offered wayward glances. Others stood and stared. Were they expecting him to fire up the proton pack?

Farrin rounded the corner and skidded to a halt. Lo and behind, a man wearing a Spiderman costume was crouched beneath three ghostly visages. They were identical, each like a giant gaseous head and twin floating hands just below.

Farrin turned to face Josie as she came up from behind. “I know yer still workin’ out yer quirk. Just back me up if they prove ya’ be problematic.”

He wouldn’t toss Josie into the frontlines if she still didn't feel comfortable operating there, but she was no stranger to dangerous situations. She helped evacuate people on the boat a few weeks back.

“Oi! Leave the 'im alone!” Farrin shouted, charging ahead.

The closest of the ghosts turned to face him, a whimsical, predatory smile on full display. It laughed like something out of a cartoon and charged him right back.

Alright, you want to take the bull by the horns? Good luck. Farrin swung, and perhaps unsurprisingly, his fist passed right through the creature.

Intangibility. Not the most uncommon of abilities, but still rare. Farrin had faced it in different variations before. Still, it was problematic. He needed to probe for weaknesses. So, that’s where he’d start, swinging wildly for any physical weak points first.

We're on it, was a very meddled statement at the present moment in time.

Now Josie did want to help with the situation, who wouldn't after all? It was Halloween, and civilians didn't want to deal with ghosts. They wanted to be complimented on their outfits and have candy. Ensure that in no way whatsoever did you talk about spirits with their grandparents nearby or else they'd all get agitated. So to say this situation was an odd one, would be correct because Josie was stuck in a very very soft place.

Here was trying to charge ahead and all she could do was wobble while looking left and right, telling everyone to keep moving away from the situation. If she jumped out of her outfit, she'd be sporting next to nothing and she didn't need pictures of herself out there in public like that.

So needless to say she needed to think of a way to back up Windy. Unfortunately, fate had other plans for her at the present moment. Trying to move a little quicker the otter costume tipped forward and a slight incline down made her next attack known.

Josie came like a giant otterball tumbling down toward the ghost while she was stuck. She could've stopped herself, but again she couldn't show that much prowess in the present moment not being in the peacekeeper suit. So here Jo was, charging into battle and getting ready to fight.

In the absolute most ridiculous way, but hey it was something.

arrin's swings offered little more than some growing frustration. If he kept this up, the only thing he would accomplish would be raising his blood pressure. Not what he needed at such a young age. But what other options were there? Let the thing run rampant and harass whoever it pleased? Absolutely not. People had enough problems. They deserved some uninterrupted fun on a holiday. 

So, Farrin kept on swinging. "Oi, jus' give it up already. Yuh' know I'll figure yer' gimmick out!" He shouted if only to prompt some response from the otherwise silent ghost. It laughed and chuckled but didn't utter a word. Its hand swiped at Farrin, but he was still the faster, ducking below the blow. There was always the chance it would have passed through him, but there was no sense taking that risk without knowing. 

Farrin leaped back up into an uppercut that passed straight through the ghost. Jumping with his upward momentum, he lifted himself into the air. That's when he saw it—the charging otter. Josie was making a move... in her freaking onesie. 

When Farrin fell, it was with a kick that accomplished nothing. But, as Josie barreled into the ghost, the apparition was thrust forward with her push. She connected!

"Ow!" A voice shouted from up above.  

Farrin looked up, seeing someone standing at the edge of a roof, looking down on them and rubbing the back of his head. That was no coincidence. He was connected to this ghost somehow.

"All according to plan!"

Josie shouted while she kept barreling until smacking into a wall and finally came to a stop. Now on the bright side it wasn't her face that collided with the brick instead it was her backside. Considering she'd had plenty of times landing on her back she considered this one not too bad.

Now she heard the 'ow,' but Jo didn't see where it was coming from, and she was literally in no position to pursue anything. So the next best thing 'had' to be done in the moment.

"Hey, I'm kinda stuck here so I'm gonna roll around for a bit. Do me a favor and go find that voice and throw it off the rooftop maybe that'll make the ghost disappear."

Speaking to Windy in a very matter-of-fact way. It may be a little harsh but hell maybe whoever it was, was listening and then would immediately surrender and they could all go back to Halloween.

nd that was all Farrin needed to hear. "Keep yer head on a swivel," he responded to Josie. The nature of the connection between man and ghost hasn't been established yet. It might operate independently of him and try to attack her. 

No time to lose. Farrin cranked up his quirk, leaped onto a window ledge, then blasted off onto the roof. "You!" He shouted, landing a few meters from the figure. Below, the ghost would, in fact, lunge at Josie, taking a few swipes at her, but before long, it would seize up. 

Farrin closed the distance and swept the fella's legs out from under him with a kick, then kneeled at his side, holding a fist up—ready to punch. "Yer gonna call that thing off 'fore I knock yuh inta' next week," he spoke with authority despite the ridiculous costume. The fear was plain to see across the crook's face, his eyes wide and hands raised at his sides in surrender. 

"Okay, okay!"

With that, the ghost below would disappear. "Now, what the hell was that all 'bout," Farrin asked. Clearly, the ghost was of quirk make, but what was he up to, and why couldn't Farrin hit the thing? 

"I... I, I needed money," he squeaked pitifully. "Figured people like you would be busy elsewhere tonight. My ghosts can interact with others but can only be hit from behind. Thought I could scare some folks and get what I needed." 

He was a talker. Good. He also answered both questions without Farrin needing to specify. "Plenty o' people fallin' on hard times, arsehole. Dun' give yuh' the right ta' rob others," he said, lifting the man over his shoulder and leaping over the building's edge. The use of a few deceleration fields made the landing easy. 

"Let's hand this one over ta' the police, then get back out there," he then said to Josie.

Josie's eyes widened when the ghost reappeared while Farrin had gone to finish the job. Plus, she had no idea if anyone was watching them so the gimmick had to stay on rather than trying anything of grandeur. A small yike left her mouth while the angry-looking ghost came towards the young woman swiping and she had no choice but to roll.

Roll as if her life had depended on it and in this case, it sorta did, with all things considered.

She only got so far before the ghost intercepted. It was about to do some real damage front and center until the thing finally froze up and she heard Windy catch the jerk responsible the mess.

Finally being able to stand up and approach the situation, she could only listen to it so much until she heard something that made her face twitch and her fat costume shake.

"You did all this for money? So instead of trying to find some guys who ran a horror show, haunted house, or forest, You decided, "Oh hey lemme terrorize some people instead of taking advantage of this time of year when you could've actually done something with ya quirk!?"

The secret vigi yelled in disbelief.

alid. Feckin. Points. With a quirk like his, the fella could have run one of the greatest haunted Halloween houses in the city, if not the country! Instead, he turned to ruining the holiday for some folks with some petty muggings.

The ambitious "take over the world" villain sorts sometimes made sense. Not the actual logic, and even less the ethics or morality, but if you put your bad guy cap on, tilted your head, and squinted, you might find some semblance of understanding. There were dots one could connect. Maybe they honestly thought they could do a better job running the world, or more than likely, they were traumatized in some way they didn't know how to cope with. Some were honestly just evil bastards, but their actual plots and plans would bring them from point A to B if heroes didn't get in the way. This? This was bullshite. The fella could have made so much money a million other ways. He just lacked imagination. 

"Feckin' shite fer brains here," he added onto Josie's comment. 

A few minutes later, though, the police arrived and carted the guy off. A quick flash of Farrin's preliminary license and he and Josie were good to go about their business after submitting statements and such. If any follow-up was required, they knew where to find the students. 

"Alright, back ta' makin' people's nights," Farrin said, starting away from the scene once the cops took off. "Some feckin' people. Yeeeesh." It was his last comment as they continued down the street.
