[attr="class","body"]It was a crisp autumn morning. One that was a perfect balance of temperature, at least for Shigeo. He briskly walked across the campus grounds, dressed in a cyan turtleneck, with white chinos and pair of tie-dyed converse sneakers. Along with the beige backpack on his back, the only other thing of note was the drink carrier in his right hand, with four cups of coffee. Shigeo glided across the courtyard, humming a tune that was stuck in his head. His direction would soon become apparent to any passersby. The wooden stand selling various teas and bakery goods.

The stand was well made, with it being built by the support course students in the club. It had a wide counter, with lots of room for the various cookies, brownies, muffins or whatever else deserts the Baking club had made this morning. There was also a built in stovetop, using bits of a refurbished hot plate to allow for them to heat water for the hot tea. With a wooden roof built to give the stand shade, there was a banner hanging down off of it, advertising the Baking Club's baking sale. Shigeo, had wanted to take part in the actual baking this morning, but he had class. So unfortunately, due to a clash of his schedule and prior commitments, he could only take the slow shift of running the stand. The morning was coming to an end, with midday only a handful of hours away, and as a result, business would slow. But even at the more unfortunate timeslot for Shigeo, who loved talking to customers, he didn't seem willing to let it put a damper on his attitude.

"Good morning Juzo. Good morning Charlotte." Shigeo's voice chimed out as he approached, giving a wave toward the two students who sat behind the stand. The three students all exchanged pleasantries, having already been acquainted via their shared membership to the Baking Club. "And, I brought a little treat for you guys. I know it may be a bit early, but I'd like to think, it's never too early for Pumpkin spice. Here I got both of you a latte. And don't worry Charlotte. Yours was made with oat milk." He set down the drink carrier on the counter, before passing out the drinks to the two students. After a bit of conversing, Shigeo insisted on covering the stand early, as he had arrived about ten minutes before his shift. He had a bit of a gap between his last class and taking over the stand, and had hoped getting the coffees would fill enough of that time. It mostly had, but Shigeo didn't mind starting a bit early.

He had a shared shift today, with Maisie D’Arcangelo. He didn't know much about her, aside from her being a fellow Baking Club member and a first year. But that was fine. Today would be a good excuse to get to know one of his underclassmen. As his two classmates said their goodbyes and left Shigeo alone, he took an empty seat behind the stand and cracked open one of his textbooks. At least he could get a bit of studying done before Maisie and any customers arrived. Taking his drink from the carrier, he gave it a sip before setting it down, eyes mostly focused on his textbook. He'd glance up from his book every minute or so, taking care to not miss the first year's arrival. When she did arrive, he would greet her warmly. "Good morning! Maisie I suppose? Here. I brought you a pumpkin spice latte." He gestured toward the drink carrier, now holding the singular got drink.

Maisie was really stepping out of her comfort zone with this one. For the first time in a long time, they were going to be mostly on their own, relying solely on Maddie to understand the world around them. She would tap around for her head before speaking. "Okay Maddie girl, we can do this." A semi-confident grumble would escape her before she would hold onto her bag tightly and continue forward.

Today, she was going to be helping the baking club. You may think that she wasn't a good baker, but she was a great taste tester. Something about her other senses being heightened, or at least that's what people around her said. She was also very good at providing the group funding for anything they wanted to bake, too! She tried to make herself an important asset in whatever she got herself involved in.

Thankfully, she had gotten used to the way that she needed to go to get to where her baking club was meeting. She wasn't entirely sure she had met or had a conversation with the person she was meeting, but he was a member nonetheless. As she arrived, Maddie would stop at the front of the stand, bumping her head on Maisie's leg to signal that there was something in front of her. She'd place a hand down, touching the table and starting to make her way around before noticing a voice. "Oh, you must be my partner for today." She would bow, before trying to adjust her head to look in the general direction of where she heard talking. "I'm sorry, you will have to pass it to me, I am blind. Let me take a seat first, is there one beside you?" If she was told yes, she would sit down in the seat, get Maddie seated, and then open up her hands to get the drink. "Could you describe it to me?"

[attr="class","body"]As Shigeo stared down the text in his textbook, it felt as if the words were shifting and moving, leaving Shigeo's head spinning. He swallowed hard for a moment, closing his eyes in an attempt to "soft reset" his head. A trick Shigeo had picked up during his middle school years. When his academic success really began to matter to his parents, in their own distant way. After the reset, he jumped back into his reading with an added vigor. Despite his chipper attitude, there was a bit of tiredness in his eyes. Hence the sugary source of caffeine near him. His schedule was usually packed, leaving Shigeo for little time on his own. This wasn't an uncommon occurrence, which led to these hyper focused study session throughout his day when he found himself alone. This was just his normal.

Upon the arrival of his fellow student, a handmade bookmark was slide back between the pages, as the book was closed and stowed back in his bag. After his short greeting, he loudly tapped the seat of the chair next to him, hoping to alert Maisie of the chair's location. "Yes. The chair's right here." He'd give her and Maddie a few moments to settle in, before taking the last coffee from the drink holder and passing it toward the girl. "It's right here. Careful it isn't iced." He'd chuckle, making sure the drink was safe in her hands. Her question was a bit odd, asking for Shigeo to describe the drink. The cup itself was unremarkable, being a white disposable hot cup, with the coffee shop's logo plastered on the side. Still wanting to oblige with his fellow club member's request, Shigeo lifted his own drink, popping off the lid and peering inside.

"The cup isn't anything special, being a disposable hot cup. It's got one of those coffee plugs in the lid to keep the drink hot. But the color of the drink is pretty, with a mix between brown and orange. The whipped cream is fluffy, resting on top of the coffee, with a bit of I think pumpkin spice powder on top. It's a powder that's sprinkled on top. It's got like cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, maybe ginger." He wasn't sure if that was exactly what Maisie wanted, but he hoped it helped. Had she even seen colors before? If not, would describing the colors make him seem like a jerk. Was it like the same thing as defining a word by using the same word? As his worries began to bubble up in the back of his head, a more pressing one popped into the forefront.

"Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Shigeo Kuse. A second year Department of Heroics student. I don't think we've formally met though." He snapped the lid back on his own latte and took a short sip before setting it down. Now having introduced himself, all prior worries faded. The immediate rudeness of not properly introducing himself had been resolved, which was a massive relief. His parents would have taken the time to chide him for a mistake like this if they were here. Luckily for them, Shigeo was hard on himself in their place.

She would listen to the tapping, nodding towards it and moving carefully to sit down beside him. "Thank you." Grabbing onto the drink, she would just hold onto it and let it warm her hands. When he started to describe the cup instead of the drink, she would smile at his sweetness to help her. In all honesty, she liked to be told the contents so that she could get used to what the flavors were when she heard them. The outside of the cup and the drink were described for her vividly, which she appreciated.

"I thank you for that. When it comes to food or drinks, I like to know what's in it, so that I can get used to the taste of certain foods. Sometimes it's hard to tell when an ingredient is made in a different way than I am used to." She may not have explained it well, but the way that Shigeo discussed things made her able to imagine it well. "Nice to meet you Shigeo Kuse. I am Maisie D’Arcangelo, a first year. I'm excited to be able to work with a senpai." She would bow just a little bit, wanting to make sure she didn't spill her drink. She would move her hands in front of her and place her drink on the table, before trying to turn to look at him better. "What are we needing to do today exactly? I am not sure if I will be of much help, but I could get Maddie could attract some visitors by having her hand out some baked goods."

Not only did her reasoning made sense, but it was something Shigeo would have never thought about. The thought of expecting a sweet drink, only to find out it was bitter was definitely a thought that sent a shiver down Shigeo's spine. As she introduced herself with a short bow, Shigeo did the same, lowering his head for a small bow right back. After his returned bow, and leaned back in his chair, taking a sip from his latte.

Given how Shigeo was an upperclassman to Baking Club, it made sense to look toward him for guidance. Her suggestion made sense to help drive sales. But given the time slot they were stuck in, it probably wouldn't do them much good just yet. Relatively few students were wandering the grounds, with a number either in class or just not here. A cute dog delivering baked goods would definitely get his attention. But they needed foot traffic to maximize the idea. Shigeo rubbed his chin for a few moments, somewhat lost in thought.

"I don't think Maddie will be too helpful just yet. I'd say we wait a little longer, before sending her out. Once classes get out, that will probably be our busiest time. In the meantime, the best thing we can do is mind the stand." Even setting aside his times attending the past Baking Club bake sales, his tendency to volunteer left him with a lot of cumulative experience. When working stalls like this, there was always going to be dead periods. Best to just let it ride.

Taking another sip of his latte, he surveyed the courtyard. No one else seemed to be walking past their stand any time soon. "So Maisie. How are your classes coming along? Everything you've been hoping for?" Given how she was his underclassman, it felt only right to check in. Your first year here was often the biggest adjustment hurdle, with classwork only being made harder from the change in environment.

"I see." She felt a bit sad that her idea wasn't going to work, but then again, it made sense that such an idea may have been a bit ambitious. Right now, she had no idea if it weas busy out or not, or if now would be a good time to have Maddie go out. "Thanks for letting me know about that, I didn't know it wasn't busy." It was good that he was being honest at the very least, as he could have outright lied about how busy it was.

In the meantime, she hoped that they could get the know more about one another. It was hard for her to make friends at the school, partly because she was sheltered and partly because a lot of people seemed to avoid her. When asked a question, she perked up and begun to think about her answer. "It is a lot more than I thought it was honestly. I didn't expect there to be so many things that I didn't think about or consider." With a pause, she would go into more detail. "Like making friends, I didn't realize that it was so difficult to make friends. The classes are a bit more hands-on than I am used to, and it takes some extra work for the staff to make things accessible, but I try my best to help them out where I can." She would wait a few seconds, trying to think if there was anything to add. "What about yourself? Are you excited to be a hero?"

As the topic shifted toward her school experience, Shigeo listened intently. While his first year had been a good one, it had its own trials and tribulations that mostly came with the territory of the big step that university was. Friends could be harder to come by, and one often could feel weighed down by the added classwork. As she related her own troubles, Shigeo nodded. But in the end, she seemed to be doing good. Which was a good thing. Shigeo had seen students break under the pressure that came with the hero course, and was happy to see his underclassman wasn't in a similar state.

At Maisie's question, Shigeo's warm smile faltered for a moment, caught off guard by her innocent question. He had mixed feelings regarding his studies, with the thought of him actually being a professional hero leaving him feeling off his kilter. That being said, he did want to be a hero. But despite being enrolled in as a Department of Heroics student, he found it hard to comprehend he was walking that path. Maybe it was his own self-doubt, but he often times felt further from his goal than the reality of the situation. "I... well yea," Shigeo began tentatively, choosing his words carefully for his own sake. "I'm, uh, only in my second year, so I have a bit of time before I actually become one. I'm just taking it one step at a time." The pace of his words slowly built up steam, as he seemingly found his footing. As he did his smile slowly returned on his face, as his shoulder's loosened.

"But until I hit the hero scene professionally, I'll be a hero in other ways." Shigeo was referring to his near obsession with helping anyone he could. At least now, before he could inspire hope, he could maybe just make someone's day a little brighter. Reflecting on his own reasons for a moment, he took a sip from his latte before speaking again. "If you don't mind me asking. Why are you wanting to be a hero? I don't plan on judging you or anything like that for your answer. I just think it's a good question to get to know another hero student. Heroics can be a dangerous job after all. But you can do a lot of good too." He knew a number of people who were in the course to become rich and famous as a hero. And Shigeo had no problem with that. He wasn't the type to judge someone too harshly. People were complex. But to risk death for whatever reason one had, meant you had determination. An admirable quality indeed.

Maisie never wanted anyone else to feel their version of a hero wasn't the correct one, as there was a reason that there were so many hero agencies or types of heroes. "And you have time to decide don't you? Even if you don't want to be a hero at the end of it all, you would have learned to use your quirk really well."

When a similar question was given to her, she took a few seconds to think about her answer. "I suppose because people didn't think I was able to. I had a lot of people say that a blind girl could never be a hero, or that I wouldn't know what the world needs." She'd shake her head in dissatisfaction with those ideas. "I think that is far from the truth. People choosing my path for me, which would have been that of overprotection and nothing of my own." It wasn't a life that she wanted for herself.

Maisie's kind words helped brighten Shigeo's mood. While he still had his own reservations and worries, someone else holding some faith in the path he was walking felt good. But Maisie spoke as if Shigeo had a choice. To be honest, he didn't see it that way. Sure, he chose to walk this path. But ever since committing to it, he couldn't stray. Doing so would only lead him to prove his parents assumptions of him right and leading him to fall further from their graces. No matter how long it took and how far away the goal of being a hero was, it wasn't a path he could stop walking.

Shigeo adjusted his sitting position, bring up one leg the other, listening as Maisie gave her own motivation. It was one Shigeo could understand, at least in broad terms. The wanting to prove yourself to others and to walk your own path. But that being said, Shigeo felt a faint spark of envy. The path set out for you was at least something. Something he had wished he had gotten. But thoughts born from insecurity and self pity aside, Shigeo felt a pang of respect toward Maisie for her ambitions. It took a lot of bravery to stand tall and break free from the expectations from others. That first step in particular was incredibly difficult. And in some ways, Shigeo himself hadn't taken it yet.

"So have you picked out a hero name yet?" Moving forward with the conversation, Shigeo decided to change topics a bit. "To be honest, it took be a long time to pick my name. Well, I didn't technically pick the name, but I think it fits. My quirk lets me assign electrical charges to targets. I can then manipulate them. So my hero name is going to be Rail Gun." When picking his hero name, he had a number of options he was working through. By the end of his second semester of his first year, he had dozens of possible hero names. The choice held a lot of weight after all. A hero name was a representation of the type of hero he would be seen as. He needed a name that could inspire hope. But the more Shigeo pondered the name, the less sure he became. It had took a friend from the Department of Management to step in and pick one for Shigeo.

Maisie only hoped that her words would reach him in a way that would help. It was sometimes hard to know if what she said was received well, as she was never able to get the visual aspect of the reaction to her words. Because of that, she tried to speak from the heart so she wouldn't be ashamed of what she said. In a world where people so easily lied, she vowed to never do such a thing and to always be honest with her words.

"My hero name..." It was as if she forgot it for a second. "Well, I hadn't really planned on in advance, but I like Elegy. I guess it sounds a little grim, but I think it fits what my quirk is, and how I want to say the truth about those around me." Would a sweet girl like her having a hero name like that spark controversy? Perhaps, but it was one that she choose so she was happy with it.

As he explained his quirk, she would sit there patiently, nodding along with his description. "Wow, well, it sounds like a very versatile quirk to use. I'm sure that any hero agency would be lucky to have you. Rail Gun fits that really well. I can already hear it now, that it will be something that people will chant and scream when they see you!" She would wait a few moments, before trying to ease his mind even more with her words. "There you go though, even if you may not be sure of your path, you can have a name you can be proud of, no matter what your future leads you to. No matter what you become, or how famous you are, I will always think of Rail Gun being someone that thought about their name to great detail. I'm proud of you for that."

Maisie seemed to pause for a moment, searching for her hero name. From how she spoke about it, the hero name she seemed to be a spur of the moment thought. Elegy. That was a poem about death, right? But what threw Shigeo for a loop was the claim that it was fitting for her quirk? What her quirk was. Some sort of necromancy or poetry related quirk? Either way, the name was a nice one. Maybe a bit formal for his own tastes, but from the name had a good mouth feel."I like Elegy. It sounds elegant." Shigeo gave a light chuckle at his attempt at wordplay.

After giving his own name and his reasoning, Maisie was quick to compliment his quirk and name. At the mention of fans cheering "Rail Gun" Shigeo couldn't help but blush at the thought. The idea almost felt impossible, but someone else putting the idea forward was unexpected, but nice. This feeling was soon amplified to an uncomfortable level at the mention of pride. While he appreciated the words, in a way it all felt wrong. Underserved.

Growing up, Shigeo was mostly seen as a disappointment. He was simply inferior when compared to his siblings. They just had more potential to help his parents than he ever did. His parents made it clear. Shigeo was ordinary by comparison. And Shigeo knew from watching his parents, that being ordinary didn't make you useful. He tried to find something for his parents to find pride in, but he had yet to truly gain that. But getting this here from an underclassmen of all people felt confusing. Shigeo really didn't know how to react. His face was bright red, as he was stunned for a moment, flustered.

He tried to speak, but couldn't really find the words. He took a quick slurp from his latte to try and center himself. "You said Elegy fits your quirk. What is your quirk? Can your poems raise the dead?" While he didn't believe the theory he had pitched for her quirk, Shigeo was trying to quickly change the subject away from himself. Her intentions were good, but Shigeo wasn't sure if he liked the praise. While it made him feel good to an extent, it really clashed with the self image he had cultivated over the years.

"I thought so too! People tell me that I look elegant, so I wanted something that felt formal if I said it aloud. Thanks for confirming that it doesn't sound stupid or childish." Even if it was, she was glad that he didn't say that to her face. With his silence, she would let him stir in it. One thing that she'd noticed from coming to Japan, is that a lot of people did not have a lot of confidence in themselves. She didn't either, but she wasn't going to talk about that right now. After a pause, she would look over to him and smile. "Whatever you're thinking about what I said is okay. It's my judgement on you, so hopefully it helps you have another perspective."

Giggling at his guess, she would shake her head in a no. "Not exactly. I can't see my quirk, but people say it reminds them of an angel, perhaps a biblically accurate one. Or it reminds them of a nightmarish horror. Or it gives them comfort. The thing is that I have to sing to activate it, so in a way, no matter what people think it reminds them of, it's good at getting someone's attention like a elegy is." She'd wait a few seconds for him to think about it, before she'd continue. "When I sing, I can see in a way. My voice echoes off things- everything but living things. I can see that absence when I sing, and know that there is a person there. I guess echoes can't really go through people as easily." She'd carefully take a sip of her drink, knowing that she just talked a lot. Maddie would look up to make sure that she could properly, before going back to looking around for danger. "I can't really see it myself, but people say that I summon wings with eyes on it, that follow you. It's been called scary, beautiful... and everything in between."
