and-to-hand combat may have been the scrap's crown jewel outside of one's quirks, but denying the body was a recipe for disaster. Day in and day out, whenever Farrin wasn't with Sada, he was training up atop his grassy hill at the edge of UAU's training grounds. Calisthenics was the name of the game - at least for a few more minutes. The vast expanse of greenery was one of the hill's many advantages over the gravel of the training fields. Perfect for exactly this sort of exercise.

Push-ups. Simple and effective. He had stopped keeping count a while ago. Numbers matter little when you're not looking to finish anytime soon. So he kept on going. Pressing up and down against the grass. Seconds ticked to minutes, which ticked into nearly an hour until finally, Farrin decided it was time to don the aforementioned crown jewel once again.

When he stood, it was to the sight of his peers running the track or sparing in the makeshift arenas. Only a handful of students had approached him since he'd taught those of his peers that saw it fit to laugh at Freja during orientation a lesson. Solitude was not an unwelcome guest. He had Sada. Who else did he need?

A silent gale whisked away a few beads of sweat and cast them to the wind.

"Well, back to it," he muttered, watching as a few speedsters tore up the track.

Part of him was tempted to partake in their little race, but he wasn't finished with his daily regimen. The young student set his feet shoulder-distance apart, drew his right foot back a bit, tightened his right fist close to the chest, and pointed his left fist out. This was the Emerald Fist, and so he began to shadowbox the wind.

[attr="class","les"] O NE IN BODY AND MIND, balance achieved through the ability to breath life into thought. The track is a neverending loop of bodies, each enraptured by their own pursuit of gain on these fields for every ounce of effort that they put in. Maintaining a steady rhythm is all that she can keep in her head, one step taken after another until she keeps up a pace that slowly rends the air from her lungs. And yet, she'll never be able to achieve the levels that natural born speedsters are able to. No matter how much effort she puts in, she'll never be able to throw a punch like how many other hero students are able to. To give and never shine bright - To live in her shoes is to sear that concept into your head. Yet another step taken sees her faltering, stumbling a little until she slows her pace to a mere jog. Enough for the world to stop bleeding into a blur, enough for her to see her apparent flaws as others truck on by. Her eyes flutter over a lone figure in particular, a stranger figure that chooses to dance with invisible demons and strike where they may tread. And in capturing her attention, he too seems to steal her stride, the burning of her calves and the harsh rake of air down her windpipe momentarily forgotten even as she whistles with every breath she takes. Who in the world is this kid?

he air parted before Farrin's fist, and though it lacked the thunderous boom he possessed in another time, precision and speed defined his every movement still. Four years of training built atop the seven years foundation of survival had made a machine of the young man. He was energy and lightning reflexes personified. Packed to the brim with confidence, or so it appeared from the outside, at least. 

His combos were ever-flowing, like river rapids carrying both direction and force. One jab flew after another, a blur of movement until he cut the left-sided attacks off and brought the hammer of his right fist down on his imaginary opposition. The enemy took many shapes. Sometimes it was in his father's image, on other occasions it was but a mirror. He had to beat the weakness out of himself. He was both whetstone and the blade. 

Whet too much though and there was the risk the blade became brittle. That is, everyone needed a rest from time to time. Another blur of motion, another three jabs fired away followed by another right cross. After that, Farrin's arms fell beside him, heavy and dripping beads of sweat from hours of exercise. 

He shook his long limbs out, as if to will away his soreness, and turned again to face the training grounds below. Some of the speedsters continued to kick up dirt and gravel, others wrapped up their sparring matches, but one stood out. A girl who had singled herself out by - well by looking in his direction. Did he know her? Only Sada, Kenta, Miroru, and a few others from his dorm really paid him much mind. There was Natsumi too, but that was a single occasion. So what had he done this time to merit another of his peer's attention?

[attr="class","les"] T HERE’S WORTH IN STRENGTH, worth in every drop of power put into a singular strike. And with worth there is waste, movements that get sloppier as the body gradually fails to keep up with every bit of force that goes into it. She sees how he shines, she sees how he loses his lustre the longer his training goes on. It's something that makes her realise just how much she's lacking, and doesn't fail to paint those thoughts upon her thinning lips. Still, she knows that she's been caught staring when their eyes meet, curiosity interlocked with judgment as she tries to unravel his surface. Should she look away? Or would it be better for her to own this moment and approach him? A brief moment’s hesitation sees the chance slipping right through her fingers, silence steadily drawing a line between them as she starts to fret. He think she's weird, doesn't he? She's weird for staring?

very grain of sand that fell through the hourglass made the moment that much more awkward. When the deserts weight became too much to bare, Farrin finally sighed resignation to his fate. His social battery's maximum charge held about five minutes worth of conversation at most. The fact that so many students avoided him had been a blessing in disguise, one he had learned to welcome. He couldn't just ignore her now though. He had clearly caught her staring. 

"Eh, yuh' okay down there, lass?" He called down the hill to his apparent admirer below. "If yuh've any questions, well, I dun' bite." But he sure had a mean right hook. Hopefully, that's what she was interested in. Freja had approached him during their first week to learn a bit about his boxing style. Maybe this girl had similar questions? 

Farrin waved his hand, inviting her up the hill. It was his sanctuary, carved out of the training grounds and made his own. Several names had been crossed off his mental list, but "dojo" seemed to stick. A place of self-improvement, one he trained in often and occasionally assisted others in their journey as well. Had he just scribbled more instruction across his to-do list for the day, or did the girl have other reason for staring? Hopefully, not one that would earn her Sada's ire. There were few things Farrin ranked as scarier than his fists. That was one of them.

And yet, something about his movements is off, or so her instincts tell her. Try as she might to identify what it is exactly, she lacks the actual combat experience to say for certain. hen the future flowed freely into Farrin's mind on the daily, a little mystery was made into a welcome guest. Of course, he didn't see such things always, but he certainly didn't see that comment coming. Most of his peers watched with astonishment as Farrin danced with the Emerald Fist. This girl was critiquing him. Only the thick-skulled turned away constructive criticism. Farrin wasn't the brightest bulb in school, but he was not thick-skulled. 

"Eh? What? I mean, strainin' in the sense that I'm trainin' often, sure. But, that's part o' the process. Has been fer' years now." 

The past four years had been marked by flying fists and ceaseless work. The heroes of Above & Beyond agency worked him to the bone and he was thankful for it. Three of those years saw him simultaneously attending Hero Prep. Working out. Honing his abilities. These things were as water to the warrior. It was pointless if he wasn't pushing himself. There was, however, always the chance she was catching onto a Chronokinetic caveat to his quirk. Chronokinesis accelerated his passage through time, speeding him up immensely, while in his Temporal State, but his quirk made for a most fickle mistress. Outside of his Temporal State, it actually ate away at his speed, slowing him down. It didn't do much to slow his fists in a fight, but more keen eyes might take notice. 

"N' what's yer name? I'm Farrin. Farrin O'Rourke."

The only real way she could confirm her suspicions would be to amp him up, but with how little he knows of her quirk, she suspects that he will not take kindly to being jabbed by a needle. "I- uhm... Tatsuko. Tatsuko Ume. Nice to meet you." With a foreign name and a little luck, Farrin might have the fortune of remaining oblivious to just who the Ume's might be. Or perhaps, he's one of those that happen to follow the hero network closely, unlucky enough to know of her parents within the top rankings. Either way, she tries to sweep over it, quietly clasping her hands together as they begin to fidget.

n eyebrow rose with Tatsuko's words. Farrin trudged through the world with weights clasped to his back, but his reaction time and sheer martial prowess more than made of for that lack of bodily speed in the eyes of most. Yet, here stood the first of any at UAU that recognized his being held back by his own quirk. Of course, it was unlikely she understood the nature of his handicap, but the observation was certainly noteworthy. 

"No' too many 'round these parts that'd call me handiwork slow," he said with a grin. 

Though Farrin was only a freshman, Above & Beyond and Hero Prep had armed him with a close-quarters arsenal. He was taught his mother's fighting form and adapted to make it something of his own. It was one more way he honored her memory. And with his Emerald Fist, he had earned a reputation in week one of classes by beating those bullies from orientation black and blue. 

"If yuh've any input, Tatsuko, I'm all ears." 

It was half invitation, half challenge. Not a physical challenge, Farrin wasn't out to issue any spars yet, but one of expertise. If she thought she knew better, but turned out to be all air, he would be quick to highlight her hubris. If she did possess some potential pointers, he was more than happy to discuss them. Either way, she was just another student to him. Her heroic heritage may as well have flown over his head. Four years was not enough to fully familiarize himself with all of the nation's heroes, even those near the top. That same unfamiliarity worked both ways. His family had become quite notorious, or infamous depending on who the subject of the conversation was, back home. Out here though, just about nobody knew of Morgana the Crimson Light & Balor the Singularity. It was one of the reasons he had finally budged and accepted his fate in another country. Out here, all that mattered was he did his best to become the hero he needed to be, and if this girl's two cents might help get him there - well, he'd listen.

[attr="class","les"] I N TERMS OF CLOSE-QUARTER COMBAT, she severely lacks the fighting experience to say what it is that he can do to make things right. But if she's to put an explanation into action, she could probably demonstrate something using instincts alone. "I imagine that if you have some kind of... speedy quirk, you already make up for it." She starts off, "Tighter movements... uhm... purposeful footwork..." The fidgeting does not stop. In fact, it only gets worse as she tries to go through every lesson she'd once been taught in preparation for her greatest downfall. "It's something that's more... it requires you to actually feel it to know what's wrong." That's the best way she can put it, a mind wandering towards her pockets as she shifts her weight from one foot to another. "I can boost your speed if you want to test it out..."

 speed quirk? Chronokinesis definitely qualified. He wasn't increasing his speed in the traditional sense, but accelerating one's passage through time achieved the same ends. She had, however, piqued his interest yet again. 

"Oh, really? Is that yer' quirk? Can make things move faster or some sort?" 

Quirkology was rainwater to curiosity's roots. It simultaneously satiated and expanded that curiosity. He was no genius in the matter, but boy was he interested in people's quirks and how they functioned. 

"If so, by all means. I feel fine," fine because this was simply how he went about his life. He had long ago grown accustomed to the sluggish state Chronokinesis could leave him in, "but can't say I'm no' curious now." 

Chronokinesis felt like an adrenaline shot to those who experienced its gifts for the first time. After spending so much time in his temporal state, the sensation has dulled. He still felt something like an electric charge firing through his veins, but he didn't freak out as the world slowed to an absolute crawl around him. Her quirk wasn't Chronokinesis though. Whatever it was, it was bound to feel different. If it was a more traditional speed enhancement, who knew how he might process everything around him? In this particular instance, he invited the unknown.

Well, she can simply note that down for now and remember to use it for her own questions if the opportunity should ever present itself. "Part of it." Only speak of what needs to be said. She dances around further prying by busying herself, pulling a needle from her pocket as a blue aura begins to cover it. Then she steps up, holding the needle up and readily pricking at his shoulder with a brisk "Don't flinch". It's probably easier said than done but for Farrin, there'd be no pain nor wound for him to tend to. It's like electricity in the body, tapping and tugging at every nerve as the effects of her quirk begin to circulate. "Try giving it a shot now?"

on't take mystery shots from strangers likely ranked above not talking to them, but this was UAU. If some villain had snuck inside just to drug Farrin, hero society as a whole was facing far larger problems. She was a peer, a classmate, and one that hadn't earned his ire or suspicion. That would suffice for now in earning her some trust. 

He was acutely aware that she had avoided answering his question in full. He took no offense. Many among the student body avoided revealing their quirks until necessary. Information was a valuable commodity. Why hand it out for free? 

With the prick at his shoulder, Farrin felt an electrical jolt shoot through his veins. It wasn't the same sort as Chronokinesis. This felt almost literally like an electrical current, and he had become the living circuitry through which it ran. 

Farrin backpedaled two steps, all the while his eyes were locked on his opening palms. He flexed his fingers, then gripped them into tightly balled fists, then flexed them again. 

"Now this is peculiar," he commented, staring down still as his body moved with a familiar speed. 

It wasn't quite on the level of Chronokinesis, but it was growing more and more similar by the second. The world did in fact come to slow by some measure, which meant it had an effect on the signals traveling through his body and, therefore, his mind and reaction time. With the paces taken away from Tatsuko, Farrin took on his fighting form and began to swing. Chronokinesis's weight was still there, but the load had been lightened. 

"Hm, that is interestin," he said, continuing a combo against an imaginary opponent. "Still seein that strain?" He felt it still, his body being held back, but by far less a degree. It was oddly satisfying moving faster without needing to kick up Chronokinesis. He wouldn't have traded his quirk for any other, but it was undoubtedly tiring afterward. If he could move like this on the daily, without relying on his temporal state - well, what a boon it would be.

She would never rise to the occasion, never take the spotlight and shine where her family once hoped that she would. But in giving others her all, in gifting them a fragment of her own ability, she would see them soar to heights they'd never once thought to reach. "Looking slightly better. Still a little sluggish but an improvement is good." She smiles, watching for a bit even as a thought begins to prod at the back of her mind. If only she could boost his speed a little more... Perhaps, she should attempt to work more on her quirk. "It'll last for a good while. The speediness, I mean. So just be careful of that. Haven't really seen if I could make anyone faster than that, but uhm... not a lot of people appreciate the thought of working with my quirk." Tucking the needle away, Tatsuko scrunches her nose and rolls a shoulder back. "I can probably guess why though."

ow the question was, would Tatsuko's quirk layer over his own? If her boost could work in conjunction with Chronokinesis, what speeds might Farrin achieve then? He was more than curious. Only one way to find out. 

Farrin was about to fire up his quirk and enter his temporal state when Tatsuko made that final comment. Okay, so he had two questions now. Why wouldn't people want to be on the receiving end of her quirk? The needle? If their peers were afraid of a little pinprick, they were in for a rude awakening beyond UA's walls. Nobody that graduated from this academy, or at least the heroics department students, would be venturing out into the world without taking some nasty damage. As fast as Farrin was, even he couldn't dodge all the dangers out there. Eventually, he was going to get hit - hard. It was a foregone conclusion. Inevitable. There was a reason the life expectancy was so low for heroes. Farrin intended to live a nice long life with Sada. Retire one day with a family, but he knew that even if he did make it, it wouldn't be without his fair share of injuries. 

"N' why might that be?" He asked, looking for confirmation. 

He really hoped it had nothing to do with the needle. The students here were being blasted by villain bots on the daily. If they couldn't face a little trypanophobia, they weren't going to last long in this career.
