With its status as the nation's capital, Tokyo had its fair share of crime. Not all of it was a flashy affair, like a building-levelling villain running amok, or tracking a thief that could vanish like a ghost, however. More often than not, it was simple affairs - muggings, robbery, petty theft, and other such low-level crimes. While the police did their best to prevent them - and put right the crimes they couldn't prevent - Tokyo was a big city, and there were only ever so many officers that could be dedicated to the task. With so much ground to cover and so much going on, it was no small wonder that the presence of a costumed hero patrolling the area was welcomed by citizens and police alike. No doubt there were those that weren't keen on it, but Hyousuke had been cleared for the job after having passed the necessary checks, and by the sounds of it, so had his partner. Someone by the name of "Prism," he'd been told. He wasn't sure what kind of Quirk they had, but hopefully, they wouldn't need to use them. As much as he was itching for a good scrap, he didn't want one at the expense of someone else's safety. He sipped idly at a paper cup in front of some bougie-looking coffee shop (about the only kind that seemed present in the area), gradually draining his cup while he once more checked the patrol route. From the looks of things, it wasn't a particularly wide area they'd been assigned, but having to check in on various backalleys and security blind spots seemed like it'd make it take a while anyway. Not that he minded - any experience was good experience, and he couldn't afford to pass up an opportunity if it meant keeping up with his peers.

Miroru pushed her hair out of her face as she stepped out of the elevator out onto the main observation deck of the Tokyo tower, some 150 meters above the ground below. The open air of the deck meant a brisk breeze wandering past, driven by the large bodies of water relatively nearby, and tossed her hair back as she knelt and checked the straps on her flashy boots. She'd showed up to this location- notably not where she was supposed to meet Hyousuke- a very good bit early, and in her hero oufit, complete with pleated orange skirt over discrete shorts and gilded accents showing off rainbow lightning bolts at a few places.
She looked down off the edge of the tower, and leaned back carefully, fighting the urge to let herself get concerned. She knew what she was doing. She would be perfectly safe. It was gonna make a super good impression to anyone who saw.
She planted a foot on the railing and leapt off.
---
Thanks to the buildings nearby, it'd be a bit before Hyousuke had a chance to notice anything out of the ordinary. Eventually, though, as the time to meet up came closer, it was entirely likely he'd notice the rainbow wandering through the sky overhead.
Literally.
The closer it came, the more clear it became that it was, in fact, a person- a girl, her hair a bright, foxy orange, with similarly vulpine ears and tail fluttering in the wind as she sprinted her way closer... midair.
Behind her, steady despite the bouncy cadence of her steps onto nothing, streamed that rainbow, following her as her steps grew longer and longer, letting her descend lower with each step until she got close- and dropped straight out of the sky, landing with a HUGE gust of wind (that likely betrayed the nature of her skywalking trickery) in that classic superhero landing pose!
She straightened, clearly a bit out of breath, but cheeks flushed with excitement. "HOLY COW, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN TOKYO FROM THE AIR?!?"

Hyousuke was, at first, unaware of what was happening. Not because he was dense - not this time, at least. It was the buildings at fault this time, shielding her from his view until she drew closer, at which point he had to do a double-take to make sure that he wasn't seeing things. After all, while rainbows were a fairly common occurrence, it hadn't rained recently enough for one - and rainbows generally followed a set shape, rather than streaking through the air behind what looked distinctly like a person. Even as he squinted, and the mysterious figure grew closer, it was difficult to tell what was going on - until he spied a pair of ears and a tail adorning her. Between the orange of her hair, and those rather distinctive features, it didn't take him long to put two and two together. There was only one person he knew that matched such a description, and it was the person that had been assigned as his partner on this patrol. Before he could call out to her and introduce himself, however, the act reached its crescendo, and Miroru landed in a spectacular display of light and agility. He stood up, intending to cheer, but she beat him to the punch with an exclamation of her own. Nevertheless, he was no less excited for it. When he did speak, his words practically exploded out from him, with a volume to match. "That was awesome! How'd you do that?! What's your Quirk?!" He could barely even slow himself down enough to be heard, let alone enough to speak at a sensible pace. It took him a good moment or two to notice he'd even spilt some on his hand, even - prompting him to end the barrage on a slightly sheepish note. "...Want some coffee?"Miroru

His enthusiasm sure was contagious! Miroru grinned, preening a bit as she brushed her bangs out of her face. "Whew! It WAS awesome!" She hopped back and awkwardly lifted her foot to show him the jet turbine built into the sole of her boot. "I used this! I control it with my quirk-" She flexed the magnetic field, and it spun, blowing a cooling breeze in his haphazard direction for a moment. "-and I just produce thrust roughly equal to my weight with every step so I basically end up walking on air. The ground pushes up on you when you stand on it, weird as that sounds- this is the same principle."
She realized he'd asked two more questions, and waved off the third. "No, coffee's bad for me. I get jittery and hyper in a bad way. Thanks, though! And as for quirk-wise, I can manipulate electromagnetic forces. Whether that's electro, magnet, or light, which is actually an interaction between the other two. Only thing is," she admitted, "I can't... MAKE energy. So no laser blasts willy-nilly for me. Gotta have something to work with. That's why I- am PRISM. The Spectrum hero!" She struck a pose, lifting one foot and stamping it down in a broad stance in time with one fist popping into place on her hip and the other flashing a peace sign as a rainbow starburst shimmered behind her!
Cheesy, but the backdrop helped to sell it!
"What about you?" She asked as the lightshow dissipated, and she took a more casual stance. "All I know is that you're called Dynamo!"

Hyousuke nodded eagerly. He understood about half the words in her explanation, and the rest didn't really help him piece together the puzzle all that much, but there was no need to let her know that. By all appearances, it seemed like he was soaking the information up like a sponge. However, understanding of her explanation wasn't necessary for her own enthusiasm to infect him right back, and her pose drew a wide, toothy, grin across his face that somehow seemed wider than his cheeks themselves. The only reason he didn't start cheering was because she'd asked him a direct question, and of course, he was bound to answer. "My heart makes electricity!" Was all he said at first. It took him a moment to realise that this description, while accurate, was perhaps not entirely helpful. As such, he elaborated, with no smaller level of enthusiasm to his tone. "That electricity gets used to power my body, and that means I don't ever run out of stamina!" Perhaps a little bit of an exaggeration, given that strenuous enough exercise meant he could, in fact, run out. But it'd take a lot more than just strutting around the city to take him down to zero. "So! I took a look at the route earlier. What do you think of it? It's in a pretty nice area, so I don't think there's gonna be much trouble, but you never know!"Miroru

Ah, that look. Miroru recognized that look. The puzzled look veiled behind polite, wide-eyed interest. She smiled and chuffed a laugh, rubbing the back of her head and making a note not to blast him with science in the future. He was friendly, and seemed excited to meet her in general, and that was nice enough to specifically avoid trying to sour that energy.
However, she got her turn to disguise an awkward reaction when he mentioned his quirk. Of course she was paired up with someone that pumped out electricity. Her heart skipped a beat- but he explained further, and she felt the tension tied to facing down theoretical allies armed with lightning fade away quietly. "Oh! That's super interesting. I think- Dauntless has something similar, doesn't he? I don't think his heart generates the effect, but he uses electrical charges to enhance his body, too! That's a good place to start!" She couldn't help wondering. "Can you utilize the electricity in other ways? Or is it not really something you can safely release aside from as a power source for your body?"
He had an excellent question about their route, and Miroru tilted her head, thinking back and lifting a hand to create a simple light-based display of the map route as she remembered it, stealing the general topography from her infrared awareness of Where There Were Things nearby and Where There Were Not. Which made it low-detail, but quite accurate.
"So the thing to remember about higher-end areas is that they do tend to have lower levels of obvious victimization, but they're high risk, high reward situations. Criminals will often stake out the least visible areas and take whatever chances come their way to get a big score and beat it before a patrol comes along. We should definitely make a point of being visible while we patrol- but also discretely check the places likely to harbor those ambush predators waiting for a chance at a big score just off the main drag. Did you see any places like that when you reviewed the area?"

Outwardly, Hyousuke was as bright as a bulb. Beaming like the sun, and with a stance as confident as anything, he seemed to simply acknowledge the comparison to another hero without offering much more by way of a response. To others, it might have seemed like he simply didn't have much to say on the matter. However, in truth, a part of him resented that his Quirk - something that barely put him above a particularly well-trained athlete, as far as he was concerned - was being compared to a far stronger, far more useful, one. The last thing he needed was a reminder of his strength, or lack thereof. But his resentment wasn't shown in anything but his silence, and even that was more likely to be interpreted as him listening intently rather than responding at every chance. It wasn't until she asked a question that he even spoke. "It's just a battery," he explained, "That uses my body like a circuit, so I don't think it can get out. Maybe I should try that sometime..." He had, of course, tried before. He wanted more than just the ability to catch his breath quickly - he wanted to be up there in the big leagues, with versatile and powerful Quirks. Something like Dauntless', that could knock a villain flat on their back, or hers, that no doubt had a litany of uses that a smarter person than him could list. However, he didn't give her much of a chance to follow up with a response about his Quirk, instead moving swiftly on to asking about the patrol route. Again, he listened intently, though this time it wasn't with resentment festering inside him. He genuinely was interested in hearing her thoughts - though he kept his knowledge and experience with running in some small-time, ragtag group of delinquents quiet. He wasn't sure how she'd react to such a revelation, and it wasn't the kind of topic to be brought up on a first meeting anyway. Better to just keep things moving. "Out of all of these? I think we should try and focus on here, here, and here." He pointed at three spots specifically, and placed his phone down on the table between them so that they both had a clear view of what he was getting at. "This one looks like it's used like a shortcut from one part of the street to the other. It's by some apartments, but someone quick or quiet enough could snatch a purse off someone not paying attention. This one goes behind some businesses, but it's longer than the first one, so there's bound to be a blind spot or two where the cameras won't catch them. And this one seems like it's the worst of both. Cheap apartments and no shops, so it probably doesn't have much security, long enough for someone to jump you and run off if you're not careful, and too far from the street for any lights or police patrols to help before they've run off."He seemed to be quite knowledgeable about the subject. As if he'd taken advantage of such situations himself, on more than one occasion. But he was a hero - such an idea was preposterous at best.

The fox-tailed girl, of course, was no mind reader, and couldn't pick up on the nuances of his response, but she did recognize that downplay of his own quirk and rubbed at her chin a bit. He might not have meant to leave much room to comment, but she wasn't perfect on her social cues and sort of just plowed ahead as her thoughts demanded. "You say that, but you DID clear the entrance exams. So either you're doing a lot with that extra energy, or you're- oh. Actually, yeah, that tracks, you can probably put in absolute tons of work to improve your base physical state without running dry on energy. So maybe it's not the most directly applicable quirk in a fight, but it sounds like it's gonna give you a huge edge on developing your baselines, and that's before you get a proper gadgeteer to whip up some kit."
Miroru happened to be a bit of a nerd when it came to gadgets! "Like, just off the top of my head, even if the charge is mainly constrained within your body, a proper EM-harvesting device could probably soak up part of it to power other devices. I know it doesn't sound like much, but in disaster zones, power is very commonly completely out. The ability to power devices like flashlights and phones, completely independent of the power grid or batteries, would be massive. Or even something as simple as a small satellite repeater to provide cell signal in the middle of a particularly hard hit or remote area could get you in touch with rescuers where anybody else would have absolutely no way to call for extraction." She stopped rambling and rubbed her chin a moment, then awkwardly added- "Oh. And I guess you could weaponize it like a tazer once it was extracted." That, for some reason, clearly made her uncomfortable.
The redhead tilted her head, flopping her ears to the side as she listened, nodding along as she took in all of Hyousuke's insights into the places that might prove to be worth checking. "Wow, you've done your research!" Of course the book nerd would assume the other student had picked that up by studying. "Okay, so we should direct our patrol route past all three. I can pretty easily tell once we get closer if anyone's lingering in those spots and how many- human bodies put off a lot of infrared, it makes them a cinch to identify even at a distance- and we can go in to take a look if anything seems suspicious?"
I can pay no price too great for justice.

All good suggestions - ones that he had considered, but never in so much detail. He was hardly the sharpest knife in the pack, as he had already demonstrated earlier, so it hadn't even occurred to him that his Quirk had other applications beyond those that directly affected his body. However, it was a conversation that he would have to continue another day. Before he had a chance to discuss the matter with her further, a notification pinged on his phone - a reminder of the patrol's start. Not that he seemed to be at risk of forgetting, but at the very least, it helped serve as a reminder in case something came up. He shut the reminder off as quickly as it had appeared, but the moment was gone, and that aside, time was of the essence. "Alright, let's do that!" He said, punching his fist into his palm, quite clearly excited by the prospect of working together with her. "If there's anyone doing some shady stuff in there, they won't know what hit 'em!" Looking again at the route, he thought for a moment, tracing his finger along the streets. "If we take the shortcut by the apartments and then the one behind the shops first, we should be able to finish off with the long one and loop back here when we're done. We might even have enough time to check out somewhere else on the way back too. What do you think?"

"Sounds like a plan, Dynamo! You sound like you have a pretty good handle on the sort of terrain we'll be working with, even if this specific area isn't particularly familiar. I'll let you take point and direct our efforts as you see fit." Miroru stated, nodding firmly and reducing the display of the area into a little glowing shape in the air between them for quick reference later. "Though- maybe it's better if they know what hit them? After all, a deterrent has to be recognized to deter things, doesn't it?"
As they started, Miroru watched his proposed route and nodded, highlighting the trail with a bright gold line following his finger. "That sounds like a solid plan for a route. While we're en route, I'll give you a heads up about anyone I feel in those locations, and you can make a call about a method and plan of approach- meaning, y'know. The direction and tactics? Does that make sense?"

Letting him take point was perhaps not the best of ideas. Not because he lacked any kind of defensive or recon-related abilities, but because he was about as reckless as a UA student was allowed to be before getting booted out of the door. However, he didn't respond with that, instead nodding enthusiastically to her proposal, and voicing his acknowledgement of it. It was hardly as if he had any better ideas, after all, and could use somebody to watch his back. He didn't think that this part of Tokyo would hide anyone particularly devious, but he knew from experience that it was best to be prepared. However, her putting forward that he not only take point, but also make the call on how they approached each situation, was something that he wasn't as pleased to hear. He wasn't the 'plan' man. He was barely even an ideas guy. The two brain cells rattling around inside his skull were dedicated entirely to how best to throw his fists against whichever opponent he was looking at. But, with him unwilling to appear inadequate in the presence of a peer, and wanting to maintain that can-do, confident attitude, he nodded just as enthusiastically as before.
"No problem! Just leave it to me - they'll lose before they even know it!" As long as they thought like his old 'friends,' anyway. He hoped - perhaps against hope - they didn't come up against anyone vaguely organised. He was the muscle, not the brains. "So, wanna head out?"

It was only a bad idea if Miroru had some sorta expectation, and- well, she didn't! She was going into this without any expectations besides that Hyousuke would do his best to stay on task and protect anyone that needed it. And asking him to take point was her trying to push against her own type A personality, always looking for the fixes and tempted to take the reins. She wanted him to be part of things, not just muscle to be pointed in the direction of needed violence... which meant she didn't catch that was how he was most comfortable.
Ah, well.
"I believe in you, Dynamo!" Miroru proclaimed, flashing a thumbs up as he proposed getting to work. "Yeah! Let's get out there and make a difference!"

Fortunately for them both, plotting the route didn't take much effort. The shortest route that took them through all three was, coincidentally, ordered in just the way that he'd listed them out. Unwilling to look a gift horse in the mouth, he slipped his phone back into his pocket, now confident that he knew where he was going. He would likely have to check it now and again, of course, but he supposed that he would cross that bridge when they came to it. For now, there was a patrol to get on with. Hyousuke turned into the first area slowly, making some token attempt at surveying the area before he acted rashly. At first glance, the short route behind the apartments didn't seem to hold anything terribly exciting. There was someone leaning against the wall and lighting a cigarette up, but they didn't seem to be in any hurry to do much of anything. They were close to the apartment's back entrance too - hardly the best place for a thief to wait for a mark. "Doesn't look like there's anything here." He said, looking slowly around. "Let's look through it and keep moving. If we're gonna find anything, it's probably going to be in one of the other two."

Miroru kept on Hyousuke's heels as he led the way, trotting along a little more fast-paced due to being shorter than he was, but no less determined to make the most of this patrol. She didn't seem to be tempted to haul her phone back out- but then, if he'd made the connection, he'd probably realize she had a minimap in her back pocket referencable on a moment's notice. She was keeping track of their position as they travelled, ready to act but without much to respond to.
"I concur. Seems like he just wants a smoke. Nice of him to go outside," Miroru stated quietly, nodding to Hyousuke- and waving to the civilian as he glanced their way, prompting a hesitant but relatively friendly wave back. "To the next theoretical hotspot then?"

Hyousuke was quick to agree - it wasn't as if there was much reason to stick around, after all, and he wagered that the stranger wouldn't take too kindly to being grilled about criminal activity in the area. If they even knew anything more specific about it than 'criminal activity probably happens in the general vicinity.' While the first area had proven uneventful, the second one outdid it in every aspect. It seemed like the sheer size of it only emphasised the fact that there was nothing going on. No people, let alone criminals, were there, and with the sounds of the outside world muffled by the surrounding buildings, what noise made its way in was muted and dull. Even the breeze blowing through seemed still, with it broken by the buildings in the way, and petering out before it even got to the patrolling pair. Though he strained his eyes and looked closely from where he stood, Hyousuke couldn't make out a single sign of villains, criminals, or even a wayward rat that needed to be shooed away. "I gotta admit..." He said, sheepishly rubbing the back of his head. "I kinda expected something more exciting than this. Do you think the guys on the other routes need help? If the third bits anything like this, we'll just be clocking out early anyway.”
