I never thought I'd see

Ever since she finished her first round of research on quirks Iphi had been deep in her workshop at Ouros. She had been processing the data herself for the records they had on file and was going line by line manually on her computer entering the full transcript of her notes in addition to any other findings. Amane had come and gone several times before he basically forced her off the computer for her own safety. A pain sure, but she knew he was right. She overworked herself frequently.

Taking a well-deserved power nap she woke up just a few hours later with the want to get into the data she collected even greater than before. To not upset her partner further she decided that it might be better to get out in the field and test her creation. She was still working out a few kinks but the device was approximately 60% done. Through the Professor's insistence, she put out a request on UAU's network that she could use an assistant to help test her new device and made her way to the campus. The bulletin she put out did mention that there would be some live fire involved and that they would meet at the support labs to start to finish up the work together. After a brief time, she had her volunteer Rokuhane Miroru who was someone she was sure she hadn't met before. At the very least she hadn't been in any of the classes Iphi had taught! "Probably a freshman" she thought to herself as she waited at the Support Lab Room #3 for her guest.

Miroru was, indeed, a freshman- it showed in the way she poked her head into the room and looked around anxiously before entering, confident she had the right place- but she showed up ready for anything, with a small (and cheap) tool kit, as well as her tracksuit and a set of gilded boots with some sort of mechanism built into the soles. "Hello! Ah- I'm Miroru? Just Miroru if you please. You're- Recall-sama, right? The one I'm here to meet?"

She stepped into the room and closed the door, offering a polite bow. "It's a pleasure to meet you! I'll be in your care today. Please trust that I'll do my best!"

Straightening, she moved to a table and set her things down, looking over whatever Iphi had brought with her. "What will you need my help with today? Just need someone mobile to serve as target practice, or..?"

I never thought I'd see

"It's a pleasure to meet you Miroru" she gave a small laugh at her addressing her as Recall-sama, very unusual with this generation to use honorifics like that. Every other first year she'd met so far had been very cavalier about naming conventions, not that it mattered to Iphi "You can just call me Iphi, whatever makes you the most comfortable." she said gesturing to the seat adjacent to hers for Miroru to sit. The boots Miroru was wearing did catch her eye assuming she had agreed to help because she had her own expertise in engineering of some kind. "Did you make those yourself?" she said pointing to her boots "I would guess...they aid in mobility? Extra space in the soles would be perfect for the addition of turbines." She could make an educated guess that based on the extra space in the heels of the boots alongside the material they were made of that there was some sort of turbine housed in them. How they operated was something she was genuinely interested in, inspiration for new gear was always helpful in her book.

After however Miroru would choose to address her question she would lift up a small briefcase that contained her equipment. The briefcase would have #39 on the front in large red letters "So! I'm here to do the finishing touches on my newest creation." she would open the briefcase to show Miroru the bangle in the middle of it "Pneumatic Cannon" it looked pretty unimpressive at first glance and Iphi was aware of this so she would put it on her right wrist "When I flex my abductor and flexor muscles back to back..." she would do so as the bangle would transform into a gauntlet with two intake valves and 4 exit valves that are frontward facing "It turns into a gauntlet that can condense air pressure and shoot it out like bullets." she didn't demonstrate this aspect of it given that they were in the support rooms. "The live fire test and further troubleshooting after a diagnosis is the final step. So I was hoping you could help by being a moving target, don't worry I'll scale back the impact so it's nothing more than a pinch!" she didn't want to scare Miroru before they could get started "If you're prepared we can head over to Ground Beta?"

"Oh, of course! I'd be happy to use whatever name you prefer, Iphi-sensei," Miroru offered, scaling back the honorific but including one nonetheless. "I had help! A couple of the support kids, Hiyori-chan and Kei-san helped me put them together. The idea was mine, but the execution was, bluntly, garbage until they both assisted me." She nodded again at the guess, smiling brightly. "Yup! They produce thrust my quirk can vary, which lets me do anything from slowing down falls to accelerating upwards or running level in mid-air!"

The redhead fox leaned forwards to squint at the case. Number thirtynine, huh..? That was a whole lotta inventions. "Pneumatic cannon, is it? That's fascinating... I never thought of weaponizing air pressure... but those are meant to engage at range, huh?" She nodded, leaning back. "Okay. I can play target dummy if you're nice about it. You gotta calibrate and testfire it BEFORE we start though. Deal?"

She sat nodding along as Miroru enthuasiastically explained her situation "Oh Kei Hada? I've taught a few of his classes he's very bright. I'll have to meet this Hiyori as well" she figured Hiyori was another first year as she name didn't ring any bells "You should be very proud! They are very well made" she gave a smile as she closed the briefcase and stood up, preparing to head over to the grounds. With a small laugh, she addressed Miroru's concerns "Of course I'll calibrate them before we test. I think the principal would have my head if I harmed a student over a weapons test of my own design."

"I've been active in the field for 7 years now. You can get a lot of inspiration when you look at the quirks around you, shall we?" she gestured for Miroru to follow figuring they could walk and talk all the same. "When you get to know more about your classmates you might find more that have quirks that aren't 'traditional' for hero work. Nothing that boosts combat prowess or stuff like pyrokinesis" harmless to give Miroru more insight into her quirk "In my case, my quirk is called High Spec. My brain is more akin to a computer at this point. I can recall anything I've ever experienced in my life in perfect detail." the emphasis on the word was to give Miroru insight as to why she was called what she was.

"That's part of where the inspiration came from and why I have so many inventions." she patted the number on the briefcase "Any idea I've ever come up with or any books I've ever read never leaves me. So I've used that to learn how to create support gear since my quirk isn't suited for direct combat" they were approaching the grounds at this point and once inside she took off her suit jacket and reactivated the gauntlet "Ready for calibration? By all means, if you have any suggestions for how you think we should go about this please share!" she had her own idea of what to do but the teacher in her couldn't help but present a bit of a challenge/lesson to the first year.

"Yeah! That's the guy!" Miroru confirmed, smiling as Iphi referred to Kei. "And thank you! I did my best to make sure they were solid enough to tweak and improve in the future. And yeah, I figure the principal would be pretty grumpy, ahaha!" The redhead grinned and paced along behind Recall, nodding in agreement.

"I know I do. I get lots of ideas for ways to leverage the quirks around me for usage. A ton of it's just from the practice thinking laterally to find ways to keep my quirk useful when I don't actually have an energetic enough source to fuel it offensively. Like, sure, maybe I can't blast lasers right now. I can still look around corners, or scramble radio signals, or get an idea of the layout, or or or. There's a lot that starts to open up when you take a concept past its obvious applications and explore its implications, instead."

Miroru's eyes widened at the description of High Spec, cooing in amazement. "That's so cool! So I bet you've put lots of work into honing your ability to notice things and scan the environment so you have the best possible catalog of details available for reference later, huh?" The fox-tailed girl snickered at the name drop. "THERE'S the hero name! I get it!"

The idea of never needing to forget any of her ideas left Miroru reeling. "Gosh. Makes you wonder how many world-changing inventions slip through the cracks because people forget them before they develop them..."

Then it was time to manage calibration, and Miroru thought to herself for a moment. "Well, since we're mostly just worried about damage output, why not just shoot the packed earth? It's pretty dense, but still will show damage- if we start there, we can see the sort of power that thing's putting out before I'm in the line of fire!"

I never thought I'd see

Iphi nodded in understand as she listened to Miroru briefly explain her quirk and she found it fascinating. It seemed like she, like herself, had a quirk heavily scientific that required more to use it properly. Not having a resource or something you could use to put an active change in the world had its downsides but the upside of this meant that she would likely become a more balanced hero. She had seen it all too often when a hero would rely on their quirk entirely and nothing else would end up in situations where they would inevitably lose. "So it's an energy conversion quirk? I'm sure you'll do wonderful things with that! It should give you many options when you enter the field." Miroru didn't seem like the type to be discouraged so she didn't feel the need to give a pep talk like she did with other students.

She would fiddle with her gauntlet as she listened to Miroru's suggestion with a slight smile. She was very smart as her approach was exactly what Iphi would have taken if she was alone. "Good idea!" she would walk about 25 paces forward and then do exactly as Miroru suggested making a small mound of dirt that would stand up to the force of what she calculated her gauntlet could do. She would walk back and stand beside Miroru, aiming the gauntlet and speaking aloud "Calibrated at 50 psi. Approximately 24.7 feet for distance. This should make a decent dent." she would steady her arm before flexing her wrist muscles, which shot out a small orb of air pressure that flew forward and collided with the mound. It didn't quite punch a hole through it or make a dent as deep as she anticipated. "Hmm...about 60% as effective as I thought it would be." she would turn to Miroru "Any thoughts on how to up the power?"

Iphi's understandings of their similatities was right on point. Miroru didn't point it out often, but she'd more or less completed a bachelor's on independent study in the fields of practical electromagnetic physics.

"Mm... well, it CAN do that, the same way a prism can refract or focus light into different parts of the spectrum, but mostly it's a manipulatory quirk. The conversion is really just a facet of the manipulation," Miroru clarified for the other scientist. She glanced away at the mentions of lots of options, chewing on the inside of her lip and managing not to externalize her own frustrations with the way her quirk worked- and the ways she felt it let her down.

She watched on as the test fire commenced, and Miroru rubbed her chin as she was consulted. "Well, obvious answers would be to narrow the apertures or increase the pressure expressed on the air to expel it... but I wonder if it might not be more easily controlled by working heating elements into the compression chambers? Temperature would also result in an increase in temperature, and regulating the output of a heating coil seems a wise way to work with existing structures without introducing excess stress on the apertures."

She nodded along hearing Miroru get more in depth with her quirk. It was nice to see that some students took the task seriously! There had always been a history of UAU students just throwing stuff at the wall when it comes to quirk usage and never looking at them from a scientific standpoint. Miroru had an excellent grasp on the potential applications of her quirk already and as a freshman too!

She couldn't help but smile as Miroru gave her an assessment. All of this was something she had already accounted for, but she felt it would also be a valuable experience for Miroru. "Correct!" she would say aloud before removing the gauntlet and holding it up some Miroru could see. " Regarding a pneumatic device, I must account for the extra energy created. To keep it low tech, I couldn't install something to convert the energy into another form, so instead, I made this out of a nitinol compound." She would pause to see if that sounded familiar to Miroru, and in case it didn't, she'd continue, "Nitinol is an alloy with a shape memory effect. It can retain its shape and is very malleable when under heated conditions" taking out a screwdriver; she would fiddle with the internals adjusting the device before putting it back on "Test 2. Let's see that i-" an alarm rang out as Iphi instinctively reached for her phone. "I'm the closest hero to respond to a break-in, so I'll need to head out" she would grab her suit jacket and threw it on, stopping for a minute to consider the implications; of her following statement "If you'd like some field experience you can come with. I'll fill out the paperwork later and take full responsibility."

Miroru felt more understood by Iphi than she did by most of her classmates and teachers. It wasn't that they were dumb by any means, but the specific interest in scientific pursuits separated her from most of the hero course and its teachers. Tons of pro heroes used gadgets, but how many of them designed them?

The cheerful "correct" was exactly what Miroru loved to hear and she perked right up, and tuned in to the solutions Iphi had manufactured for herself. "Ohhhh. So... do you use the nitinol to act as a piston to compress the air, or as the pressure chamber to collapse in on itself?"

The question wasn't answered- the world interjected and demanded Iphi's attention, but rather than excuse herself, Miroru was invited along! On the spot, the fox leapt up, ears upright and tail quivering with excitement! "Yes! Absolutely! I'm on your heels, Recall-sama! I'll make sure not to let you down and ensure you don't regret this!"

I never thought I'd see

"Both!" she called out as she picked up the pace gesturing for Miroru to follow "The internal are approximately 80% nitonol actually. The shape alloy keeps the air pressure high and lessens the chance of an accidental discharge." she had learned that the hard way with the first two prototypes. The initial one was made of steel and had issues setting back into its original shape after use, and the second was gold, but it couldn't stand up to the heat from the pneumatic reaction. These were things to share at a different point as they had a job moving outside the gate and into the field. "Prism, correct?" she said, elaborating further in case Miroru was caught off guard. "I saw that was what you opted to go for as a hero name. It's a good one!" she would open her GPS and flagged the area they were heading two blocks from where they currently were.

They would approach the location, which ended up being a jewelry store. Internally Iphi sighed in relief as petty crime was usually accompanied by either henchmen or very low-level villains. Given that Miroru was a first-year she didn't want to put her in more danger than necessary and if she had the skills required to pass the entrance exam, then she definitely could handle a few grunts or, at the very least, wouldn't be a liability for Iphi to have her. "Okay. Some heroes will choose to strike first, but I like to air on the side of precaution. In a populated area, you never know if the criminals have hostages, and their safety is the first concern." Iphi quickly walked to the front of the shop and peeked over the wall to scope out the situation. "3 men, all armed. How comfortable are you with gunfire?" it may have been intimidating if Miroru was nervous, but a necessary one. "I'm going to see what I can do to disarm them. Follow up if you can." Activating her gauntlet for a proper field test she would increase the pressure to 100% and fire off three rounds to disarm the men. Two of her shots would land true throwing the weapons to the side while the other man was alerted to their presence and began to lay down suppressing fire. The other man would run out to subdue Iphi and Miroru but Iphi was quick on the return flipping one man over her shoulder which caused him to land on his back and then quickly moving past the other and grabbing his arm to pin it behind his back and kicked out his knee to make him kneel. "Prism, can I leave these two to you?" she hoped Miroru was confident and competent enough to handle these men now that they were unarmed but only time would tell if this would end up being true.

"Prism, yeah! And thank you! I figured it's the sort of name that's recognizable, and without negative connotations, so it'll be inspiring in the field. That's the idea, anyhow," Miroru stated as she ran after Iphi. "I'm still not sure I'll ever have anyone inspired by me, but my goal's really more to help build up my classmates so we can be a new generation, a new breed. Working together for real instead of being divided by petty stuff like fame and fortunes."

Never know if they have hostages? "Actually, we can get a pretty good idea. Hang on a second." Miroru's eyes unfocused for a brief moment, and she lifted her hands, twisting the light between them into a wireframe map of the store's interior. "Objects block infrared light, and I can sense where it is, so I've got... y'know. Like a little minimap." She highlighted the hot spots, each one a person.

"Oh, I hate gunfire. It's why I play preventative. Don't worry about their guns. They won't fire unless I get knocked out or something. My quirk'll be mostly focused on that but it'll even the odds in our favor. Leave that to me!"

True to her word, that suppressing fire didn't come. The gunman held down the trigger, and nothing happened, and before he could do anything about it, his friends were on the ground with a hero on each. "Already on this guy!" Miroru called out, snapping a set of zip ties around his wrists and ankles, with a second tie through each loop fed into each other to keep his wrists near his ankles. "What about that guy?" She asked, gesturing towards the guy without a working gun!

I never thought I'd see

Iphi may have known a lot about Miroru from his school profile but like most first years she didn't have much information on her combat capabilities. Color her pleasantly surprised when Miroru could genuinely hold her own as she adapted to the situation quicker than Iphi had expected. The next generation was indeed something else, and she felt proud to be instructing them to their best capabilities. Even as Iphi subdued the first criminal, she smiled at Miroru, engaging in a casual conversation despite their situation due to Miroru's intervention in stopping the shooter. Usually, this would be game over for someone like Iphi, as her quirk couldn't stop someone like him. Even Miroru was at a disadvantage with someone this fast. "Field Test #3," Iphi would say as she engaged her gauntlet once again and aimed her fingers at the man running away '7 mph wind. Target is approximately 10 meters moving at a rate of .7 meters per second.' She would only get one shot at this. She adjusted her arm based on these calculations, air rapidly filling the chamber before she unleashed the shot, watching it barrel through the air before it collided with the man knocking the wind of him as he collapsed on the ground. "I'd say this was a successful test." She would face Miroru as she called the police to take these men into custody. "You did very well. Suppose you're ever looking for an internship, come to Ouros. I'd love to have you."

And I was alllllll outta conditioner," Miroru joked, nodding in confirmation of her willingness to do what she was asked. She frowned a moment before the footsteps registered, clearly having detected the rapid movement some other way just a hair sooner, and was already turning towards the sprinter as he blitzed away from the pair! "Son of a-!"

It wasn't the end, though, and Iphi saw to the problem in a heartbeat, proving the merit of her gear with a perfect takedown, leaving Miroru whistling in approval and something like envy! "Holy crow, that's effective. And about as non-lethal as you could hope for without sacrificing efficacy! That's a seriously solid design! Successful test, indeed!"

Her cheeks lit up at the direct invitation, and she reflexively pointed at herself in disbelief for a second, before catching the ridiculous gesture and hiding it! "That's- I'd- I mean, thank you!! When it's time for internships, I'll definitely have Ouros right at the top of my list!"

I can pay no price too great for justice.
