e was alone, though not entirely alone. Not as he once was at the end of it all. As threads wove this way and that, ripples cast across the temporal sea, the Farrin of here and and now sat quietly in his room. It was mishmashed mess of his and Sada's remaining clothing, a simple gaming setup by the flatscreen television, and countless weights and the equipment racks they belong to. 

The room was a mess, but Farrin laid at rest for the night. Too overwhelmed to see it all cleaned. The worst had come to pass, and no amount of training atop his hill would cure him of this illness. Instead, he opted for silence. Complete and utter silence. 

His eyes were shut, an arm laid across his head. It was a Farrin of dread and focus in equal measure. He sifted through the mess that was the back of his mind, and dove deep into the dark waters that awaited him there. An image had repeatedly played in his head. He had seen it twice recently, and so it had stuck. A snake eating its own tail. 

So, alone in the dark, he swam. Diving as far as his 'lungs' would allow. In these pitch black seas all there was to navigate by was his own intuition. Sight served no purpose in the temporal depths. Only the images he held onto in his mind. The snake. He had to focus on the snake. Drop far enough to grab a glimpse at what it meant, then come up for air as fast as he could.

o dive deeper required Farrin fight against not only the tides but his own mind. Truly, it was one and the same here. Nonetheless, the challenges remained numerous. Where one aspect of the mind tightened its breath, and threw its arms forward, pushing itself further and further below, another aspect ran its fingers through the infinite threads that were the sea's true make. He had to focus on the snake. Once he saw it with Zen, before fighting the darkling. Then again the symbol down the alley the music maker drew him and Thea down. His hands lunged grasping for something, anything. But the waters would deny him. The currents rose, pushed back, and whipped him up and away from the depths. He wasn't supposed to see these things. Not yet. 



But even in this time, Farrin remained far too stubborn to stop so soon. He pulled back, then threw himself ahead. Further below. Against the currents pushed against him, but as nimble fingers combed through time in search of the symbol, he simultaneously found that the currents offered less resistance. He could do it.

Plunging to these middling depths was never so far beyond him. The trick had always been staying there long enough to see anything of merit before had had to come up for air. Today's dive had already proved the longest he maintained yet. And he was still swimming deeper. Pressing through the dark, pushing through the endless threads, the first of many figures would appear. It was none other than the darkling's visage. 

"Turn back now, fairy. Go any further, and you might not like what you see."

ho are you!" Farrin shouted. But just like the Darkling in the world above, the enemy proved less than useful. There was only a smile, that grim smile that journeyed from one ear to the other. Farrin wouldn't freeze this time. He dove further, faster, and drove his fist forward for the Darkling's face but he was already gone. 

"You're not fast enough. Not strong enough. Not - great - enough to pose any threat to us, child. Try as might, you'll never live up to it, and in the end, you'll find that despite your efforts, everything withers away. Oberon is a name beyond your reach." 

The words landed like explosives, blasting Farrin about under the currents. He was lost in the dark. Alone. His "skin" seared from the bright light that was Magister's truth.

Wait. That was his name. Somehow, Farrin knew it. Knew this name all along, far before he ever ventured to East. It fit, a single puzzle piece that snapped into place. Only a million more to go. 

"Yuh' always did talk a big game. You n' yer' brothers too, but each n' e'ery time I won, isn't that right, Magister." 

Farrin thrust his hand ahead, and though there was nothing but the bitch black of night below the sea, Magister appeared. His throat was wrapped by Farrin's fingers. He got the little bastard now. Brothers? Information. It was seeping out between the threads below and up into the currents. Farrin was remembering. Remembering times, people, and places he never experienced himself. At least, not quite. 

"So, you're beginning to remember? That's... notable I suppose, but far from impressive."

he dark waters bubbled, and though they remained beyond light's reach, what was once frigid sizzled. Farrin's arms blistered, but his grip around Magister's throat would not ease. Instead, he dove, against the current and the growing pressure, pulling his enemy with him. Farrin knew this wasn't the real magister, only a manifestation of some kind, but overcoming such obstacles might still bear fruit. Glimpses of what was, and what might be. 

"I dun' have time fer yer' games!" Farrin shouted, plunging further into the depths. 

"Oh, but we've only just begun to play," Magister replied, the many eyes dotting his form all focused on Farrin. 

That eery smile. No matter the burn, no matter the pressure, no matter how hard Farrin tightened his fist, it would not break. Not for a moment. It was infuriating. 

"Who are you really? N' why do I recognize yuh? Why do I recognize so many I've never met?" 

"All these questions, all this effort, and nothing to show for it. It must be eating you hollow," Magister laughed. 

And his words rang true. Armed with the mightiest arsenal, the power of time, and still he couldn't pierce the veil of mystery that circled Chronokinesis. If the Darkling wouldn't answer with his words, Farrin would force the answers out of him, out of his own mind, by plummeting further. Pressure bore in from every angle. The time-turner was scorched from head to toe. He gritted his teeth, willed his way through the pain, and dragged Magister with him into the abyss.

hough the threads continued to part in one plane, here it felt as though Farrin was swimming through infinity. His body, the ethereal form he took while diving into the deep of time, was assaulted by the searing sea, and there was no end in sight. Only himself, Magister, and the endless dark.

"You're waking to the truth, aren't you? Push all you want, but the answers you seek require a more elegant touch than your brutish methods are capable of. You are naught but a pale imitation of your counterpart. Your Alter. He was the Omega to our Alpha. You, however, I would hardly equate to spare parts."

"Enough!"

Farrin fired his fist forward. It connected with Magister's jaw, and still, he smiled. Again and again, Farrin battered the Darkling. With force that dwarfed his every prior punch and swing, he laid into Magister. Yet his dark opposition remained entirely unfazed. Undisturbed. Indifferent to the assault the time-turner meted out.

"Who was he? N' how did he become so much more than I-"

"Could ever hope to be? You're setting the bar so low, but I suppose I can entertain that much. He was better than you. Contrary to the beliefs of many, life does pick favorites. It has not picked you. Everything you have, you've come to possess only due to his interference. This very conversation was made possible by the gifts he chose to leave you, but how could you ever make good on them? You're weak. And gods must be strong."

The world below the temporal depths froze, and behind the Magister, a greater visage burned into the sea.

his wasn't Magister. This was something far more sinister. It - it had manifested in the temporal current, crossed the infinite sea, found this Farrin's thread, then came crawling up through his caverns of his mind. This was no representation of a being that existed in some nebulous time, this thing was here. Now. 

"Ah, so you have begun to grasp just how infinitesimal you really are. How insignificant. To say you were a drop in the timely bucket would be far too generous. It is as I said, he was the end to all it was I began - the antithesis to my grand design. But, with him gone, and only you to rise in his stead, this game shall be most trivial."

Try as he might, Farrin could not speak. The tides hadn't turned, they had frozen entirely. Stasis subdued all movement. All life. All of time, it appeared. How was it possible? How could such a thing exist? 

"Time taught me patience, but basking in this new freedom, I will know all that I possess!" 

Whatever he was raving about, Farrin couldn't get a word in. In his own connection to the temporal currents, he had no power. Chronokinesis was silent, and the time-turner was made entirely still.

agister's form in the timescape dissipated as smoke against the wind. From where the "wind" blew down in the temporal depths was anyone's guess, but the floating pair of eyes seemed to be calling the shots now. Where Farrin was still learning to swim, this entity assumed absolute control. Slow as Farrin could force his deceleration fields, he could not muster temporal stasis. This thing was freezing time itself - or so it appeared. 

The reality of the wounds Farrin suffered on his dive were setting in. Searing pain up and down his body. Bruised and blistered. Whenever he woke, if he did, he wouldn't find them along his body in the world above but he would still feel it. The temporal plane was 'real,' it just interacted differently with reality as others knew it. Played by its own rules. It was theorized that the way Farrin saw time, as an ocean of threads, was simply his mind's best attempt at interpreting the information his quirk offered. In that same vein, these wounds were actually burns and bruises, but something else entirely. Something that didn't translate well above. But, again, he'd feel it. He always felt it. 

"The stone. The spear. The cauldron. I'll need to find them through different means this time. No Grim. No "Ragnarök."" 

This thing appeared to be musing to itself now, almost unaware of Farrin's presence. That, or it simply didn't care. It had lost interest in him. 

What do yuh' want? Farrin dared the thought.

That got its attention. The eyes appeared to focus, looming in Farrin until they occupied his vision almost entirely. 

"Everything."

imes and places not his own flashed in Farrin's eyes. And it was all absolute pandemonium. Death and destruction run rampant. Concrete spires that reached the skies bursting open and collapsing, crushing all below them. The streets ran red with streams of blood. It wasn't targeted, there existed no rhyme or reason, only chaos. 

Why? What do yuh' stand ta' gain from all this? 

The entity paused. A moment's consideration perhaps? Fall for the villainy 101 classes and divulge his plans, or acknowledge that doing so might put its plans in jeopardy. Farrin was quite familiar with pride's shadow, conceit. It plagued him early on in his training at Above & Beyond. Barty has ironed that shite right out of him. If Farrin survived this encounter, he was going to need to report everything to Barty. Hopefully, the big floating death stare he was face to face with now was willing to speak. 

"Something beyond the scope of your imagination. Now, what to do with you?" 

Alright, so it wasn't falling for the villainous monologue. All around Farrin worlds were collapsing, but without context none of it held much meaning. It was all just senseless violence, fire, and death. 

"A fate you must abide." 

It was rambling again. Farrin wouldn't interrupt. The pulsing in his ribs, the reverberating pain in his chest would have been debilitating enough even had he been able to move. The only play was to observe. To understand. If this was a possibility for his own time, he had to find some means to stop it.

very word rattled Farrin's existence and shook him to the bone. It spoke of alphas, omegas, paradise, and fate, but try as he might, Farrin found himself stuck on the fact that such an entity could exist. He was aware of convergence, the fact that Chronokinesis's innate connection with time meant that any Farrins born with it as their quirk were also connected to one another, but this was something else entirely. Not the manipulation and manifestation of time, but absolute mastery over it. 

"It's true, I have grown beyond the trivial trickeries of other temporal quirks, and once I have crossed between the realms of man and god, I shall bring forth that of the greatest of symphonies."

Was he reading Farrin's mind, or had he played with time to such an extent he knew when the time-turner would think any individual thought? Farrin fell down the unending spiral. He watched. He listened, but the entity surrendered nothing of value. There was only the infinite film of a million broken worlds and times and his endless mockery. It was senseless, but he was powerless. 

"Precisely. Powerless, ineffectual, disappointing. Weak."

Why couldn't he move? He couldn't even speak. What would the other Farrin do? The one who had made it. The one that was supposed to be here to face such threats. How was it in time's grand design that it was this Farrin standing before such a threat and not the one he saw in his dreams? A hero that defined heroics. A Symbol of Heroism. Such darkness required light of equal measure. Not him. Not someone that rummaged through refuse for a meal and used went months without a change of clothes. That Farrin, Oberon, was one that achieved greatness - that fought tooth and bloody nail to climb his way up. This Farrin only thought of himself. While Oberon was training to take his father down and protect others, Farrin fought to survive until tomorrow. He wasn't some star in the void. He was a wavering candle. And he knew, he just knew, he would once again fall far short of who he was supposed to become.

he realities which replaced the infinite black of the depths faded away, leaving only the entity. An entity, because to refer to this thing as a human, a person, didn't track. Silence gripped the moment. All the raving and ridicule ceased. There was only Farrin, the gargantuan set of eyes, and the temporal current around them.

His mounting inadequacies had cost him. How was Farrin to fell such a beast? 

"So you understand the futility of resistance then? Because there is another option. One way that might spare you and your friends - if we are to call them that."

If this entity was the cause of all that chaos, if it possessed such strength that it could ruin entire times, what did Farrin have to offer that might spare his own time? 

"I am a timeless chorus, join your voice with mine and sing victory everlasting."

It - it wanted him to join it? 

If me Chronokinetics are so weak, why would yuh' want me?

And there it was. Hope cast to a Farrin lost at sea. A single thread with which to reel himself in. If he was so weak, his abilities so inept, why would this thing bother to bring Farrin into the fold? 

"Even a ripple may one day grow into a tidal wave."

Then that's exactly what Farrin would do. No matter his weakness. No matter his incapability. He would live up to that name, Oberon, and grow from a ripple into the whole goddamn ocean.

nd so the show began. A building erupted in an explosive cacophony that blinded the entire ward. Only rubble, filth, and feathers smeared in blood remained. The hand splayed out from beneath the debris was as familiar as the scene that played before him. It was like something seen in another life.

The world went dark for all of a moment, when it reappeared there was another hand, this one hanging from beside a chair that obscured the rest of the figure. Whoever it was, they were watching the news play out - except it was between several countries. Scenes of heroes fallen in failed attempts to defend their countries. The head behind the char slumped aside Long, dark brown hair, and as the chair swiveled he saw her face - glassy blue eyes devoid of life. 

Another flicker in the dark, but when the world grows bright it's with the intensity of a star. A battle between monsters, titans tearing into each other. Tooth, fang, claw, and fist tearing flesh from bone and searing their marks into the world. It ends with nothing short of a dark, smoky mushroom reaching for the skies. These battle leaves no remains. No rubble. Not even ash. He was there, fighting an impossible fight, then he was gone. 

Farrin watched in awe, his eyes wide with what played out before him. He knew these people. He'd seen these events. They looked different then, but there was no mistake, these were the same people - just of another time. And, despite the turning in his gut, the show wasn't over yet. The temporal seas grew dark, then shattered as the next premonition played.

 spiderweb journeyed across the temporal sea. Fissures tore through the timescape's many threads and the currents grew angry. Something stood in defiance of time's forward march, and time would not abide such abnormalities. Farrin hadn't seen but felt the turn of the wrist. It was not his own. And, suddenly, the fissures receded. Temporal cords that represented entire times waved through the air and then settled, tying themselves back together. 

"Your friend cause quite a bit of destruction. It's never easy mending the damage. One might argue you and he are the true villains. Instead, you label us with such simplistic terms, when our goals anchor all of reality to a greatness these trivial lives and minds could never understand." 

Greatness seemingly brought about by the death of the innocent, his friends, and even the shattering of time. 

"As I said, that was not our doing. That one is entirely on you and your ilk." 

When the web receded, the darkness of the sea was shone away, and once more they were on an earthly plane. A pale corpse lay strewn, broken, and bloodied across the ground. His sacrifice meant nothing this time. Whatever the plan was, it had failed. Would fail this time. Farirn didn't understand what the plan even was, only that he had a part in it, and that it could only work once - it had, but now it would never work again. The looming threat they would soon face had to be dealt with once and for all. 

Farrin's soul sank. His gut was knotted, then torn from his gut. His heart beat a million miles a second. He hardly knew these people, but their passing felt like daggers in his back, his brain, his very core. And still, it wasn't over.

he final loss was the most subtle. The most misunderstood. The most vague. Whatever dark fate may lie in wait, he wasn't given a clue how to stop it.

One moment, Sada was there. Standing. Smiling. Existing. Being her most perfect self and lighting up his life with the simple act of breathing. She was his everything. His reason. His heart. Without her, what was the point? And therein lied the problem perhaps. His greatest strength came hand in hand with his most obvious weakness. Losing her. 

She was there. Right there in front of him. Then she was gone. Shadows crept from the dark of a pitch black sea, invaded the edges of her form, then consumed her. Yes, she was there, then she was gone. 

Farrin heart hadn't sank, it exploded. 

"NO!"

Farrin, shouted defiance into the infinite black, his hand wrenched forward, broken from the bond he could no see.

The entity's eyes appeared once more. Farrin could feel its singular focus, an oppressive aura that weighed the world several times over, bombarding his body from all sides. Invisible chains latched onto his ankles, wrists, his throat, all pulled taut, but Farrin pressed forward. Self-preservation made for meager motivation when Sada was on the line. The entity was smart not to reveal what it was that might take her, but even it, with its apparent omniscience, had made a mistake. It threatened his Sada - there wasn't a power in all of existence that might hold Farrin back when his Sada was in harms way. 

The eyes dissipated, then there was a form. A body. Something Farrin could reach grab onto. Something. No. Someone, he could strangle. Someone he could break.

he entity, whoever this was, managed to freeze Farrin still again. For all of a second. Stasis. Reversion. Nothing would come between Farrin and his Sada. He closed the distance and wrapped his hands around the entity's throat. He pulled his right arm back and fired his fist forward, aiming for the entity's masked face. Then it froze once more. 

"Your mistake is believing I have a hand in this. No. This is the event. This is what turns your kind. Sometimes she's killed, sometimes you never meet to begin with, and sometimes she leaves. After all, why cling to a defect like you," he ended with a whisper.

"Enough!" Farrin shouted, breaking through the entity's hold and taking his swing. 

It was gone. It was to his left, then on his right. Behind Farrin now, thrusting a leg into the time-turner's back, sending the young Farrin flying. He crashed against an unseen wall. Somehow he was altering the space within the temporal currents, but Farrin was quick to recover. He pushed off the wall and charged again. He blazed across the distance and swung again. 

"Such weakness, how could you ever hope to protect her? Of course, you'll lose her. It is inevitable."  

"I'll die first!" 

"Quite possibly."

"Yuh' won't lay a hand on her, neither will any other villain. You, Magister, herself, whatever conflict comes her way, yuh'll always find me there. I. Will. Keep. Her. Safe." 

Farrin swung, and this time the shot connected, throwing the entity back. Finally. A solid hit.

nly, the entity wasn't there any longer, and neither were the threads of an infinite, temporal sea. Farrin awoke with heavy breath, his chest rising and falling, beads of sweat racing down his neck. It was happening again, only worse this time. Whether it was Sifting or something else entirely, his mind was faltering, collapsing in on itself, unable to contain the damage time had done. For four years she had been healing the damage done to his mind by chronokinesis with her presence alone, but he was lost to it again. Alone. 

When he turned over in his bed, it was only to the memory of his Sada. She was gone. Off on her mission to heal those around the world. His love for her flowed infinitely, and he knew it was returned in kind. He felt it in those moments they continued to share, but such moments were few and far between. While she was healing those in need with Foundation, providing relief and care to those in disaster zones around the world, and discovering herself along the way, Farrin was made to promise he would continue his journey as well. To become a hero. So, they were forced to treasure those moments the world permitted them to share, but lonesome tides were already threatening to drown him. He felt them pushing at the periphery of his mind. How could he do this without her? How long would it be before he saw his Sada again? He wasn't sure. All he could do was count the days and keep moving forward.
