I never thought I'd see

Leveraging as many connections as she could, Iphi was set up in a remote facility with some of the most advanced equipment. She was there because she wanted to conduct some live research on recreating the methods in which quirks operated and making support equipment for those like herself with less of a ‘traditional’ quirk. Sure, there had been plenty of research into the application of equipment to facilitate quirk usage with heroes and villains popping up over the last few decades with a wide variety of quirks, some similar to what one would expect from a comic book superhero and others swung wildly in either direction from being very mundane to completely uncontrollable. She even knew some people personally who were actively researching the potential to extract the quirk factor to see if it could be applied to other people or even inanimate things! Truly fascinating stuff.

The idea to conduct this study in this originated from a question posed by a student in a class she was subbing. ‘Why can’t we make gear that could work like our quirks?” It was truly one of the few times in recent years she was completely caught off guard, having spent a long time sorting through the well of a brain she had for either an example or any studies actively being conducted before ultimately coming up with nothing. Even though she likely hadn’t been the only person to ever think of this she did have the means to put it into practice. So through a combination of the school's network and navigating the hero network she put a word out

Looking for willing test subjects to demonstrate and explain the functions of their quirk in a controlled environment.

At the predetermined place deep in the heart of Tokyo, she waited in the control room for anyone who chose to accept this offer, sitting at a console in front of a glass window where the person, once they entered the room and greeted her, would end up to conduct the tests.

Another familiar face! While they hadn't worked closely over the years Iphi was very familiar with who 'Lone Wolf' was. They had coincidentally both started at UAU as teachers but what was even more unusual was that he was a very secretive person. She'd known him for 2 years at this point and still wasn't entirely sure if he even had a quirk or not. Clearly, his interest in this study just confirmed that he did and this in turn piqued her interest more than she had originally anticipated. Even if she wasn't able to get any valuable data she at least would get to know him more on a personal level, a net gain if you asked her.

Mark was, at best, a mediocre teacher.

At least three times a semester his students would jump ship because he was late to class, he didn't stay up to date with his textbooks, and students would sometimes wait a long time to get their grades back. Of course, Mark also taught environmental awareness and Tracking 101, so his expertise was more practical than not. Under the moniker "Lone Wolf", Mark was just that: a lone wolf. Stalking targets by himself, dealing with situations without backup, and single-handedly terrorizing classes when their assignment was in any of the training zones. A lot of his technique didn't require his quirk, but at the same time if he was close enough to use his quirk then he might as well be dead. It was a more situational and used more for investigations than combat.

Still, with the call for a research study he had to pretend he cared for his students, volunteering to see just what this woman was subjecting people to. He'd show up in usual attire minus the cowboy hat, munching on an apple like the asshole he was. "Sho," he says, not bothering to swallow as he looked over the testing area. "How we gonna do this?"

I never thought I'd see

In her time as a teacher at UAU she had met many faculty who made a fairy distinct impression. Over the years, more and more of her former classmates or juniors would join the staff, and Mark was just that. During her tenure at the school, she hadn't spent much time with Mark as her primary duty was to sub for more of the traditional education classes, but from time to time, she would be enlisted to run his courses. He seemed...a little out of it when it came to his teaching style, but she did value him as a coworker and even more so that he was willing to show up.

"Thank you for coming, Mark." She used his real name since they were both faculty and in an isolated environment. "So my program here is to evaluate quirks and see how well I can integrate them into support gear." she would write on her clipboard some of Mark's physical characteristics before she would gesture for him to follow her into the room that was prepared for the tests "So the first question I have would be what is your quirk?" she was extra eager to find out what he could do given that she couldn't find any records on him using it publicly over the years.

Mark took another bite of his apple, mulling this question over. He could lie, but that would more than likely screw with the results of the test. He could also refuse to answer, which would defeat the purpose. For most of the time he was, for all intents and purposes, quirkless. There wasn't much he could use his quirk for outside of establishing anything that happened prior up to three days into the past, and even then if he wanted details he would have to sit and sift through all that information. It took a lot out of him, if he was being honest.

He'd follow her into the room, munching away as he considered what he wanted to say. "I'm like a really shitty oracle, but instead of the gift of foresight I got the gift of hindsight," he says, shrugging his shoulders. "I guess that's what happens when your daddy's a Nobody."

I never thought I'd see

Even in passing Mark hadn't been too talkative in their past interactions. She tried to make small talk or at least get to know the other UAU faculty whenever possible. Of course, this mainly was due to her own relationships with Sadako and Felix who actively networked as much as possible and encouraged her to do so as well. For Mark, his explanation for his quirk was abstract at best which made Iphi more intrigued. If it was another quirk that didn't have any tangible effects on the outside world then she figured it must have been something closer to slightly manipulating reality.

"Interesting." she would say, writing what he said down before she would gesture to the headpiece and wrist wraps. "Please put these on. They're to monitor your brain activity and vitals during this study," hopefully he didn't have any aversion to using his quirk in a controlled environment and she would exit the room and sit down at the console before speaking into a microphone "Whenever you're ready Mark. Please activate your quirk."

He raised an eyebrow, not entirely sure if that was foreboding or what. Most of the faculty to Mark was strange, and clearly his ideas and experiences were vastly different than everyone else's. The closest person to him was probably Dauntless, and that was because of the shared language between them. He wasn't sure how this stuff worked, but he didn't exactly want to take Iphi at face value.

"As you wish," he says, setting the apple down before taking a seat, fingertips raking across the surface of the table in a casual manner. It looked natural, but he was establishing that she had interacted with the table beforehand. Sure enough, her face was there alone with a few others, assistants to ensure that everything was set up prior to his arrival. He'd shut the link down as he reached for the headband, strapping it on before reaching for the armband. "Fair warning, I don't have precise control over this, so there might be some things I say that might be weird to you. You like weird, right?" This was a lie, but she didn't need to know that, right? He couldn't start out with the quirk, no, he had to show that he was capable without it.

"Alright, let's see...I know you're a workaholic." He reaches up, pressing two fingers against his head. There would be no abnormal spikes in brain activity, and no other evidence to show he was engaging his quirk. "I see you clacking away at your desk well before I get in...and that's not counting the work you've done at your agency first. You're in well after I get done, like super late. Burning the candle at both ends is a little unhealthy." A pause, his brow furrowing. "You were doing some number crunching yesterday. You got your hands on a dataset and discussing standard deviations yesterday." He was walking a fine line, and he knew it. If she called him out on it there was always his ace in the hole.

Even in a high tech facility like this Iphi liked to handwrite her own notes. The manner of recording information didn't matter much to her since the writing was just for the sake of those who funded this test. She could remember their entire exchange, from the words to the resulting data presented on the console in front of her. She wouldn't look up as Mark explained what she had been up to. Her eyes would flit between the console monitoring brain activity and her writing, making a point to nod along as Mark spoke to show she was indeed paying attention.

Either he forgot that she was part of an investigative hero agency or didn't care. Regardless she would make sure to point this out "Okay, yes, that's pretty standard stuff. However, this time, if you'd use your quirk, please." anyone who worked on the school for more than a few days would be able to recognize that she was a workaholic and given the nature of her job combined with this study it was pretty obvious. If he had an ace in the hole it was time to use it or this study would be over and she'd throw out the data she collected. It was for quirkers not pretend quirkless.

He'd glance over at the window, raising an eyebrow. "Well, you're no fun," he sighs, letting out a breath as he leaned back in his chair and hand brushing over that same spot on the table. "Don't say I didn't warn you, though."

And like that the memory portion of his brain lit up as he looked into Iphi's past, circa yesterday. "Alarm, five AM. One of those fancy see through clocks, tasteful jazz. Thought you'd have one of those super old ones that blared at you. A pause. He didn't need to know everything about her morning routine, and there were other ways to mess with her that didn't involve being a super creep. This wasn't one of those situations where he had to comb every last second. "You took the train yesterday. Red line, the one that gets you closest to the campus. You didn't go into the agency you're waiting on...something." He'd go quiet for almost thirty seconds as he was curious, and decided to flip back to the previous two days, at least what he could. If the sensor watching that part of his brain was a thermal, it'd show white hot. "Something ongoing. Something important was stolen, you're trying to figure out where it went. You have suspects, but you're keeping track of them. I can't figure out more than that, it's old data and not in the forefront. Boring."

He'd shrug a little, wiping some of the sweat off his forehead. Sifting through three day's worth of information was hard enough, isolating something he was looking for took a lot more effort. He didn't have to pull at all the specifics, just enough to showcase. "Where was I...right, you took the train, substituted for The Lichen as his wife is having a baby...lot of boring and nonimportant subject matter. Stayed on campus until 11pm...you did more than school work, you put out a few new feelers for the case. Took the train back home, didn't get there until midnight."

Another pause, both eyebrows going up. "Not sure how I feel about that color on you. Not the sweatpants, what's underneath. Though I kinda figured that was your style. You should really spice things up a little, I mean after what you did in the shower-"

This time Iphi wasn't taking any notes instead letting the recording device work it's magic as she would study the brain waves produced by Mark activating his quirk. This was the exact data she was looking for; the faculty listing did keep tabs on what quirks could do. It was less of the school being nosy and more of a safety concern since a registry meant that if there was an emergency, they could direct those on campus to put out the right fires. Hell, before he even showed up, she knew that Mark's quirk was mental like hers, which sparked her interest in the first place.

It was a fascinating pattern that was displayed on the screen, definitely outside of the scope of anything else she'd ever seen in her countless years of studying. It was as if the information was flooding into his brain from external sources, similar to one opening a dam. His ability to perceive events that didn't happen to him was fascinating. She wondered if it was some signal that accessed her brain and her memories or if perhaps he was absorbing the trace material from Iphi's touch to the device to access her past? There were a million different applications and his comment on her own body didn't go unnoticed. She just didn't respond to it the way he was probably anticipating. After all whatever shower thing he was talking about just confirmed to her that his power was perhaps flawed, hard to argue against someone with a perfect memory as to what their actual actions were. "I see. Valuable data." she wouldn't look up from her console, instead bringing out the keyboard and beginning to type "However, commenting on another coworker's undergarments or viewing them in the shower, quirk or otherwise, goes against our handbook on page 23, paragraph 3, subsection 2. So I'll need to report this to HR." She wasn't personally bothered by this as part of being immersed in as much scientific study as she did and eventually you don't feel much around graphic or explicit things. Though she was a pretty strict rule follower and studied the handbook when she was first employed to make sure she didn't violate any rules or cause another incident like at Ouros. "Unless there is anything else about your quirk you haven't shared you're free to leave. I'll make my HR report on Monday at 9 am so I'd clear out your morning." she would hit another button on the console and the door would open to let Mark leave "Please leave the headpiece and vital monitoring devices where you found them."

Mark couldn't help but roll his eyes, a slight smirk on his face as he shifted his hand to a new spot. "Guess that's what I get for making a joke," he says, shutting himself off to her memories. The monitors would go back to normal activity, though has his fingers ran over another person there would be a spike in the perception portion of his brain. "You know, you probably don't have a good case. You asked me to use my quirk, and I used my quirk. I've done less training with it compared to other, more practical skills, but I can tell you have some level of interest in it. You might be missing an opportunity to ask whatever you want about it, because we both know I'm not exactly peppy when it comes to talking about quirks."

The spike would fade once he reached for the apple, taking a bite out of it as he crossed on leg over the other. "Maybe you can help me figure out if there's more to it." Despite being hesitant, he seemed ready to continue. Assuming she didn't yeet him out first.

Still typing away she would speak into the microphone "I think phrasing what is defined as sexual harassment as a joke is reductive at best." She would continue entering the vitals and information. "Given that you're 26 and were able to get a license to not only be a Pro Hero but also teach, I'd be hard-pressed to assume you don't have some degree of control over your quirk. Since you could perceive specific periods and not just random events in no particular order." she would gesture for him to exit through the door "Also, if you had read details for this case, you'd realize that this whole exchange has been recorded. It will be up to the school administration to decide whether it was a 'joke.'" With that, she stood up from her console, and her eyes narrowed as she met his "If that's what you think is funny without understanding the larger implications of your words, then I would like to keep my distance. Take care." and with that, she would exit the facility to meet with the other researchers to go over the data she had collected from Lonewolf and the others.

He shrugged again, reaching over to take the vital monitor off of his arm. "Whatever you say, Miss Pavlina," he says, setting it to the side as she promptly left. He wasn't too worried about the HR complaint, though he'd have to make a note to keep any comments like that to a minimum in the future. Despite that, the encounter leaned more on a win. This meant that any future inquires into his quirk might lead with hesitation considering the nature of it. Though in a manner he might have burned a bridge...Iphi was smart, and Sean was still out there. His thoughts drifted to her case briefly and the list of suspects she had for...whatever it was she was working on. Didn't matter, as most work he had done in the past didn't have a definite start.

As he laid the headband down and he got up from his seat, he'd place his hand on where she had interacted again, the sudden whiplash disorienting him as he settled on that list again. Names, locations, potential hangouts, points of interest...he didn't have to memorize everything, just a few key points before pulling his hand back, letting out a breath as he picked up the apple. "I'm sure we'll be in touch."
