arrin leaped into the air, as high as his quirk would take him in a single bound. His eyes burned with the golden clock dials of his quirk's full strength. Pearlescent wisps of temporal flame burned in and out of existence around him, accompanied only by the emerald crackle of lightning-like energy and the blur of his every move. Then, despite the dramatic display of his Chronokinetic might, he fell on his arse. Hard.

"Oi, feckin' hell!" He cursed under breath.

Luckily, his landing was padded by the grass of his hill, the Dojo, rather than the rest of the training field's gravel. He had crashed quite a few times already, and by the looks of it, he would do so several more times before making any modicum of progress. Shadowboxing, track running, weight training, all of it was far more entertaining than what he was going for today, but should today's training bear fruit, he might be able to fly. Well, not really... sort of.

The time-turner picked himself up and dusted himself off, slapping the dirt off his gym attire. Then he was at it again. He leaped up as high as he could. Below his boot a one-foot by one-foot tile of nearly translucent emerald power formed, slowing the air to a crawl, even the minuscule amounts that passed through remained nearly stilled for the slightest moment. It was on that minute slab of hyper decelerated air that he kicked off of - or tried to. The field collapsed, and again the time turner fell on his bum. 

"Son uv a!" He shouted this time.

If he could only keep his balance while focusing on the fields simultaneously, the boons might be immeasurable. It would be like running through the very air... if he succeeded. Questionable at best, but he wasn't stopping now. So again, Farrin took to the sky. And again, he crashed. It was going to be a long day.

"Hey, cut it out, man, or I'm gonna report you to the yardskeeper for abusing the Meadowjo!"

The voice came from a lanky redhead melting into view as she abandoned her perfectly cultivated method of avoiding attention, visible only now that she felt like allowing it. Specifically so she could drop a pun and see if Farrin thought it was amusing!

"Say, I know what you're trying to do," She realized aloud, pointing in a eureka moment! "You're trynna skywalk!" She hopped, and popped up considerably higher than she should, starting to pace languidly around him with flowing, bouncy steps in midair. "Arencha?" She thought about what she'd seen, and offered simply, "What's the mechanics behind the way you're trying to do it? You trying to create push to give you force to step off of? Or can you step on those force blocks you keep making?"

I can pay no price too great for justice.

ha-?" Farrin started at the sound of Miroru's voice, then promptly fell again. He wouldn't blame her for the disruption. Villains loved to monologue. If he couldn't maintain focus while others were speaking, the technique was doomed to fail. Besides, his crash count was long lost. What was one more to infinity? 

Chronokinesis died down, Farrin's gaze losing its glow and returning to a ruby stare. He scratched at the back of his head, trailing the revealed Miroru's movement. She was doing it. She was air-stepping. Sky walking, as she labeled it. It was the superior name, nearly matching the main family of an old and unquestionably amazing series of sci-fi movies. Nomenclature aside, how the hell was she doing that? 

"Eh, somethin like that," he started, "well, yeah, basically that." 

Farrin pushed off the ground and stood his height, dusting himself off again. It was a fruitless effort at this point. He had been putting the uniform through its paces all day. Covered in dirt, and grass, and slightly tattered, he would have to have it replaced or repaired later.

"I'm usin those fields ta' slow the air below me' feet to such extents that it's almost unmovin. Almost makes the air inta a solid that I can step off of. Problem is, it requires a lot o' focus ta' slow somethin' down that much n' tryin ta' keep me balance at the same time is provin difficult. The field is collapsin a tad too early n' so I keep fallin."

"Oop! Sorry, Farrin-san!" Miroru said, wincing faintly as he toppled over. "Are you alright?"

Farrin was, in fact, alright, and made it clear as he launched into an explanation of what he was trying to do. It was clear, immediately, that the whole concept he was explaining fascinated the vulpine pipsqueak, and she nodded, focused entirely on him, and thought as he spoke.

"So you're trying to predict the places you'll need to step, create the fields, and maintain them as you attempt to use them as steps midair at the moment. But they're collapsing too soon..." She thought about that for a moment.

"Well, I can't do much for helping you suss out the vagaries of your own quirk. But I have to wonder if there isn't an easier way?"

Miroru held her hand up, and light refracted in a holographic display of a stick figure Farrin as she spoke, illustrating her points in cartoonish fashion.

"So, right now, you're trying to place and stabilize a patch of air so firmly it can serve as a step for yourself. But you have to place that field in three dimensional space entirely by guesswork. It's different for every single step, and that demands a lot of mental energy before you even get into learning where those placements need to be at different speeds." The stick figure tried to hop onto a block of green and fell through, cursing into a bubble of comical punctuation.

"What if instead, you simply placed a brief field to very rapidly accelerate time beneath your foot as you step downwards?"

This time the display showed an image of Farrin's footwear, moving downwards. A green shimmer appeared beneath the sole. "If you do that, your foot moving downwards will push air into the field, where it will be violently accelerated, and shoot downwards. As it does, it's going to vacate the field and cause more air to be sucked into the field, to be pushed down by your foot, and also rushing downwards. Now Miroru, I hear you saying in Irish brogue in your thoughts, how does air moving downwards help me skywalk?"

She held up a finger. "Equal. And opposite. Reactions."

Again, the foot moving down and pushing air down, this time with arrows showing force. "When all this air gets forcibly shoved downwards at high speeds, it creates an equal and opposite reaction- pushing UP on YOU." Identical arrows went in both directions, down with the air, up against his foot. "You'll basically be creating air jets with each step, which is exactly what I do to airwalk. You won't need guesswork for where the field goes, cuz it's always gonna be right beneath your feet; you won't need to aim to step on them; and by removing both of those layers of complexity, I bet you can spare enough focus to do this even in the middle of combat once you practice!"

he humorous display was accurate enough. Especially the string of cusses popping up in the dialogue bubble. In the movie following Farrin's life, today included an excessive amount of bleeping. His vocabulary had been reduced to a series of expletives in the last few hours. He was about to add one more to today's tally. 

"Well shite, that is an interestin idea," he pondered, rubbing his chin. 

For days now he had been practicing this pseudo-flight technique to no avail. He had ruled propulsion out due to a definitive lack of wings. Instead, Farrin focused on making the air as similar to good ol' solid ground as possible. He capable of it for sure. That much he had confirmed. As long as the fields weren't too large, and with some intense concentration, he could slow his deceleration fields to a point of near-stasis. But, Miroru was on the money. In more ways than she even knew.

"Yeah, actually, if I can use acceleration ta' pull this off, it'd be magnitudes easier. I often liken me' control over the fields ta swimming in rapids. Acceleration is like just goin wit' the flow, whereas deceleration requires some resistance ta' control movement. If I use acceleration ta' basically create some thrust, I can also keep movin n' think less on balance." 

Farrin could summon deceleration fields below his boots in a similar manner Miroru proposed, basically creating the steps just below his foot, but there was no support. It was up to him to resist the air currents and balance himself out as he leaped. Her proposed method would give him a little boost each time he jumped... stepped... ran... whatever method of traversal this was most accurately likened to be. He would still need to keep his balance up but, hopefully, it would be easier.

"When didja get those things made?" He asked, nodding toward her boots while stretching out his arms and legs.

It was best to limber up before each trial run. In theory, her method would be easier. But, who knew the number of unknown variables they were about to play with? Time could be a fickle mistress. And even if it did work, the odds of mastering this new method of sky walking on the first go were quite low. Here's hoping those odds weren't zero.

It was all the fox could do not to snicker and laugh as Farrin cursed all over again. Hearing that she'd accidentally eliminated another point of complication without even meaning to made her ears flick up in excitement and pride, to boot. "I can understand that, for sure. It's kinda the opposite on my end. When I want to stop something, it's easy enough to draw a mental wall and just be like "you shall not pass!" Directing stuff is trickier, cuz I'm not designating a single spot to STOP moving, I'm carving out the whole path in my head."

The question about her own gear made her stop and think. "About a week ago? Two? I didn't wait very long. The exams reminded me that I'm not super fast on my feet, and I don't have any way to work around that. Can't fly, can't speed up, so I wanted something to even the playing field and at least give me some 3D mobility. Plus, being able to jump any direction mid-air gives me all new avenues of evasive options."

The redhead looked around and muttered to herself as Farrin started stretching. "Figures that Sinclaire-san isn't anywhere useful when he's actually needed. Some of those wonky trampolines he makes would be great for practicing without hard landings..."

e understood that reference. Another great fictional series of old. Very old if one was referring to the books. He would have to reveal his inner nerd some other time, though it was noted that Miroru was crossing the threshold from sparring partner to actual friend. Someone that could fight, knew their Lord of the Rings, and possibly Star Wars too? That was someone worth talking to on the regular.

"I hear that. Me' quirk doesn't do too much fer raw firepower outside a speedin' up me punches n' such, so this lil' maneuver is more about addin tools ta' the arsenal fer me," he started. The Emerald Blade, once perfected, would offer some explosive firepower, but that would be reserved for the most enduring of enemies. It wasn't something to be used in every confrontation. "Outta curiosity, didja build 'em boots yerself or go ta' one o' the support department students?" He asked, taking one final stretch of the legs. Another shortcoming. While Farrin could slow things down at a range, he wasn't capable of much in the way of ranged damage. Instead, he turned to Kei from the support department to help him throw together some new gear to help him on that front. In the past, he couldn't conceive of relying on gear. Now, well, he wouldn't allow pride and hubris to cost innocent people their lives. 

"Never met him. Hopefully, I won't need him," Farrin started. "Alright, 'ere we go." 

And with that, Farrin broke into a sprint. Chronokinesis flared alive, his eyes burned gold, and he leaped up into the air. His mind centered on the heels of his foot, the soles of his boot, then he kicked. A small, shimmering field appeared just along the bottom of the boot, and a burst of air shot downward. Farrin lifted!

"Holy shite!" 

He kicked again, then again. Three steps. Four! That was already more than he had accomplished via temporal deceleration. He made it all the way up to five before excitement got the better of him. His smile was quickly weighted down and he realized he was falling. 

With a thud, he crashed onto the grass in a roll. When he stopped this time though, he quickly picked himself back up and his smile returned. "Holy shite!" He repeated, half laughing now. "Didja see that?" Yeah, Miroru was already familiar with flight, or sky walking as she coined it, but for Farrin that was his first real go. He had only managed three steps via deceleration. The count had doubled on his first try with Miroru's method. Progress.

When your parents aren't the sort to get you things, you get used to finding movies and books in the library worth your time. And classics are classics, even if they're watched and read alone where your father can't come terrorize you or drag you to "practice" with your brothers.

"I dunno, I feel like that's a pretty solid force multiplier. Being able to fight fast is just- an intense level of advantage. You deviate from all established combat experience anybody's got, your blows land in less time, incoming blows are less likely to land- it's an improvement on every level of combat besides sheer power, from what I can tell. Maybe not great at range- but then, this is all about bridging that gap, right?" Beat. "No pun intended."

The question made her grin! "Oh, me and Hiyori cribbed up the first draft, and Kei's been helping me improve it since. The support kids are super smart and might even be rubbing off. I do a lot of science studying to learn how to use my quirk better, but the engineering stuff is proving more useful than I thought!"

Miroru held her hands up and crossed her fingers as Farrin prepared, nodding to give him the go ahead- and hollering a delighted whoop as he took off! "YES! GO FARRIN! Holy smokes, you got the hang of that WAY faster than I did! You're a natural, Farrin!"

She ran over to where he landed, mind already racing! "So what was the toughest part? Were you pushing too hard? Not hard enough? It feels trickier than it really is, I think- you only weigh so much, so once you know how hard you gotta push to counter your weight, it'll get easier!"

h there was no denying speed was an absolute boon to hand-to-hand combat, and a crap overall. Farrin just wasn't obliterating boulders with ease without that technique he was working on back in the training facility, and he had yet to master that move. In this particular instance, firepower was a direct reference to brute force, but he wasn't about to correct Miroru on his meaning. Call it ego, but Farrin wasn't about to argue against the merits of his chronokinetic speed. 

Though he hadn't caught every word while airborne, Farrin appreciated Miroru's support. Though it hadn't quite reached the exhilaration of his first chronokinetic, the experience of near-flight was a close second. Lacking wings or some other means of natural flight, this would certainly work. He wanted another round with Leonid already. 

When Farrin recovered from the fall, he had a few notes ready. 

"Yeah, it was far easier than tryin' deceleration fer' pseudo-flight, but I went a lil' too hard on the acceleration. Gonna need ta' give it a few more goes until I nail down the right amount fer' me weight. Clearly, it's no' the same as runnin' so it'll take some time ta' acclimate, but this is definitely the way ta' go." Farrin paused for a moment, thinking of Miroru's boots and the support student she mentioned. "Yeah I've been headin' over ta' support for a few tools. I know yuh' said it was ta' compensate fer speed n' maneuver, but what gave yuh' the idea ta' go that route?" He asked, standing back to his height and getting ready for another air run.

"Yeah, you seemed far less stressed and more comfortable that time, but when you go too hard, it's like trying to walk on a trampoline- if you go for steps when you oughtta bounce, you just- lose your stride!" Miroru offered for a little insight into the specifics. "Actually, the trick is gonna be to find the push that DOES make it the same as running. The ground pushes up on your body exactly as hard as you push down on it, and that's why you can move laterally. When you nail that thrust ratio, you'll be able to sprint straight across gaps without issue!"

"The idea to get some mobility gear..?" Miroru paused to think. "Well... I can't really use my quirk for suppression. Magnetic fields don't really bother most people; and lasers are pretty much either very lethal or very harmless without much between. So to subdue targets, I gotta get up close and personal- no ifs and or buts, really. And I wanted something that I could control directly with my quirk to prevent hacking or quirk interference- it doesn't matter if someone who can control machines tries to take them over, there's simply nothing to make them work without my quirk powering it. There's exceptions, but extremely specific ones." She tilted her head, watching Farrin stretch. "What about you? Is that why you're working out this technique? To keep the fight on your foes when they try to get airborne?"

arrin nodded, considering Miroru's input. It felt more like a bounce and he figured he was going to have to work with that, but if Miroru felt like she was sprinting through the air, maybe Farrin's end result would look the same. That would certainly be ideal. Running was sort of Farrin's thing. 

"Heh, little ranged gadget I've worked inta me' hero outfit is sort a similar in that by tying its use ta' me quirk it's pretty useless ta' those that might manipulate it."

The cannons weren't entirely related to the current subject, but now that they were entering into the realm of hero tactics and the tools involved, he couldn't help but start on about his wrist-mounted weaponry. Then, he rounded back to the conversation. Yeah, even if Farrin had some ranged options now, taking down a flier wouldn't make for the easiest task. 

"Yeah, fliers n' avoidin' other potential problems. Adhesives n' such. Me' little launchers may be a nice new addition ta' me' arsenal, but they're new n' since I can't guarantee they won't take damage in a scrap, I need ta' be able ta' close in on 'em flying sorts wit' or without 'em." 

With that, Farrin backed up a step. "Alright, round two," he muttered, then broke into a sprint, and a leap. He thrust his right foot down, accelerating the air below his feet, lobbing himself upward. He repeated the process, the lunge narrowing as his air step did slowly shift into something more akin to a run rather than a series of jumps. He made ten steps this time... then crashed again. 

"I'm okay," he coughed up, "doin' better e'ery time."

"Ooooh..." Miroru nodded, approving. "I haven't looked into projectiles much. I refuse to use gear someone else could weaponize against me, so that means there can't be manual controls or any electronics to get hijacked. Which really only leaves railgun tech, and to be blunt, that sort of high velocity weaponry isn't exactly suited to capture or suppression tactics." That seemed to be a consistent point for her. She didn't much like the idea of using lethal techniques or equipment, either. "Not to down your gear, it's just the corner my specific restrictions sorta backs me into, to be clear!"

She nodded, approving of his reasoning. "Makes sense. I can dig it." After all, she'd used much the same logic to come to the conclusion she needed her skywalkers in the first place.

Farrin took off on his second attempt, and again, Miroru hopped and clapped encouragingly! "You're doing great! You're almost at a dozen! Nine- te-oop," she cut herself off, wincing as he crashed back downwards.

"You really are improving with every attempt! One thing you might want to try is using acceleration fields if you need to gain height. If you jumped up into one, it should launch you higher, where you can just keep going as normal right? I don't exactly have that option, I gotta sprint uphill if I want to gain altitude. Stairway to heaven and all that!"

gain Farrin recovered. A few bruises and bumps. Nothing Sada couldn't handle with ease. He shook himself out, looking to his hands, and more notably wrists, which were currently thoroughly devoid of the cannons, thinking a moment back on Miroru's comment. Yeah, it would be pretty easy to kill someone if he accelerated his round too much, even if they were built to stun. Fortunately, the air pressure cannons weren't all that strong. It was his quirk that truly determined the damage. As long as he didn't accelerate the round too much, or slowed them afterward if he did, nobody was being gunned down on his watch. 

"Yeah, I was thinkin' o' mixin' in other field types as I go ta' control me' launch n' fall, but figured I'd start wit' the basics n' work me' way up. I dun' tire easily, but if I need ta' conserve me' stamina out there, it's best I know how ta' make as much progress as possible wit' the fewest necessary fields." 

Learn the hard way first, then everything else becomes easy. Not an all-encompassing rule, after all, acceleration was way easier than the deceleration step he tried earlier, but the change had more to do with efficiency than difficulty. There was no sense taxing his stamina more for a slower means of travel. This was far more effective. 

"Is there any way you could use yer' quirk ta' cushion yer own projectiles if yuh' did use 'em?" He asked, regarding their earlier conversation.

It wouldn't be easy if she was using something like a railgun. Such projectiles would fly fast. Ridiculously fast. Farrin had the luxury of seeing the world move slowly while in his temporal state. Even then, the air cannons would fire far slower than a railgun. They only moved as fast as he needed them to and were far easier to gauge. Still, maybe if she could act on a feeling rather than sight it might be possible if there was some sort of cushion she could muster. Either way, Farrin would take a few steps back and ready up for round three. 

"Well, I think ima give it one more go fer now. See how far I can push this thing before me' next class."

"Oh, yeah, that'd probably make it even easier. Sorry, I tend to think on single lines of consideration, since it's pretty rare I've got electricity AND magnetic fields to play with. You've got layers of complexity to how you affect temporal movement, from what you've described." She tilts her head. "What's it feel like? You can- feel it, right? The way time flows? Sort of like how I can hear all the... constant blips and hisses and whines of the universe in the background?" She glanced elsewhere a moment. "Does it ever SAY something?"

She figured not. But who else was there to ask?

"Oh, I figure so. I could use conical magnetic fields to slow them down if I needed, but the trick is response time. I'd have to have them in place BEFOREhand. Easier to just... modulate muzzle velocity at that point."

"Go for it! Do you want some imaginary obstacles to hop around?" She'd happily provide if he wanted, placing completely matter-less benches and curbs in the air around him if he asked for them.

ormally, Farrin didn't exactly fess up on the exact nature of his quirk. That went double for temporal resonance. Flow was easy enough to hand wave. He could speed things up and slow them down. Most didn't think too much about it afterward. Miroru had seen him in action during their exams, and had become one of the regulars he saw around campus now. Still, only Sada, Kenta, and Thea were privy to resonance - so far.

Time had whittled away at his some of his barriers around the light-bender (among other things), though. She was his most consistent sparring partner and, as of today, helped him practice new techniques without any of the sass he experienced with a few others. They worked fairly well together too, again, considering the entrance exam.

"Eh, yeah, somethin' like that," he admitted while stretching out before his final flight test of the day. "So, sometimes I get a flash at the back o' me head that's like a danger sense. That's the most common thing while I'm up n' about. But, I can also sorta dive deeper. Remember how I said manipulatin' time is like navigatin' rapids? Well, if I really focus, or push meself too hard, or sometimes in me' sleep, it's like I dive inta' an ocean - but this ocean is made entirely o' threads that stretch fer infinity n' each thread is like an entirely different time. It's far more difficult ta' control that the fields, but sometimes I'll hear whispers or see things about meself or others literally from across time, like things that bleed through somehow." 

Very few had earned the temporal explanation. Miroru was the only one that fast-tracked the topic without any heavy influence of time. He felt familiar with her, but not to the extent of Sada or some of the others. She didn't seem the bad sort though. An honest hero in the making. Someone he could work with even beyond UAU's walls. 

"It's no' the easiest thing ta' convey, water n' threads are the best way I can put it. Me' quirk doctors said it's probably me' mind's best interpretation, n' it's somethin' most people can wrap their heads around, but it's vast."

With the explanation finished, he readied for his run. 

"Yeah, if yuh' no mind, throw some things up fer me ta' maneuver around!"
