ollowing through after each toss stone throw was fast enough. What was slowing the duo's progress down was finding the right lane for Farrin's throws. All the debris from previous explosions and the general setup of ground beta for the exercise played obstacle to his little strategy. He couldn't go wandering too far for other munitions without risk of setting off an unseen or otherwise unaccounted-for explosive, so it was safest to pick up what he could use along the way or stick with those first few rocks he picked up. 

They were closing the distance, but the stones weren't even making it as far with Lone Wolf's defenses growing more dense. more explosives blowing his collection of rocks into pebbles. They were going to have to speed this up somehow. He had just the idea. 

"Alright," he said under breath.

Farrin threw the remainder of his stockpile ahead. Worst case scenario, he could take the risk of collecting more. Instead, he was going to switch to some munitions with more penetration power. 

A cluster of mines detonated around them, whipping up a light smokescreen. The building they were aiming for was dead ahead, and it was easy enough still to see a few feet forward, but maybe that would throw their attacker's aim off if he was looking their way. Then, the time-turner leaned lower to the ground and aimed his wrists parallel to the street. With a twitch of his thumb, the fired up the linear cannons Kei had integrated into his suit and fired. A streak of explosions burned alive between the student duo's position and the building. With the extra firepower, obstacles were less of an issue, and rather than stand around and line up each throw, a few shots from the cannons wiped a sizable lane clear of explosives. If there were other traps, well, they would soon find out, but at least he was cutting away swaths of the mine bombs now.

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Mark sat in his perch, waiting for the smoke to clear as Farrin laid to waste almost every trap between the pair and the perch. He wasn't sure how to take the fire down the street; he'd have to make a mental note to include more than the Bettys and standard mines next time. This was fine as he was still experimenting, but one thing at a time. He had waited on his shot because of the concern that any hole he aimed for and missed would be recognized. That would not bode well as he had to take these two out now and not waste another moment on them. Three shots, and that's all he'd need. Slow and steady. We can at the very least get to the building. The progress they were making was slow, but Jun would take slow over rushing and making a mistake. Lone Wolf was counting on them to slip up. That's what made teamwork so powerful, splitting up what people had to pay attention to made things that much easier. Just a few more blocks, and they'd have a whole other problem on their hands; the main building was always the biggest hurdle for students to overcome, and even if they didn't beat Lone Wolf it was a victory in her book. Well...it would have been, if the next rifle crack didn't elicit major pain up and down her leg. Anger and fear took over as she fell into a crouch, letting out a yell; the wall she held up morphed before collapsing, quartz dust flying in the wind. I knew this was going too easy, she thought, realizing her overlap was not as foolproof as she hoped. There was Farrin exposed, too, which meant...it was game over. At least, for her. She couldn't carry on, and that meant Farrin would have to reassess. If she were in the sniper's chair, she'd focus on neutralizing the other threat before gifting the coup de grace to any wounded. Defenses were down, which left her partner exposed. Summoning a chain, she'd fling it out around Farrin and throw him as hard as she could through a nearby storefront, the second shot passing just by his head as she did so. "Don't trust anything!" She shouted at him, attempting to force herself to her feet with a small sliver of hope that she'd get out unscathed. One attempt to put weight on her leg told her everything she needed to know; she wasn't making it out of here "alive". She barely had time to look up as the final shot impacted the right side of her head where her hairline met her forehead, knocking her out and leaving a nice mark there in the process. arrin was whirled through the air, one of Lone Wolf’s shots whizzing right by him. The time-turner crashed through the storefront window, his shoulder smacking hard against a prop counter which cut his momentum. He didn’t skip a beat. Immediately, Farrin pushed off the ground and onto his feet.

Outside, Jun lay unconscious at the center of the street. Farrin had felt the danger warning via his quirk, but even he hadn’t been able to react fast enough. The warning had come just a second too late. He could run out and try to recover Jun, but for the purposes of the exercise she was functionally dead, and recovering at best would cost him stamina via the deceleration field the maneuver would require, and at worst would see him eliminated as well.

“Dammit,” he cursed, looking out the window, then over towards an alleyway exit.

The decision made itself. His getting eliminated would be a waste of Jun’s sacrifice. He had to push forward, so Farrin made for the alleyway. Here, he was left to make yet another decision. He could continue sifting through the alleyways and darting between cover, or he could continue with their previous tactic, this time using a deceleration field in lieu of Jun’s constructs to protect himself.

The latter was the more appealing option, but he chose the former. As much as he wished to charge in, slow and steady would win this race. Rather than use his linear cannons again though, he opted one more for loose stone and debris, lobbing rocks down the alleys to detonate more mine bombs and weave his way toward the tower. He was close now, almost inside.

Mark let out a noise as the scene played out, removing the last casing from his rifle and moving to reload. "Two outta three ain't bad," he mutters, though he was clearly disappointed. He only managed to knock out one student, though it was possible that the one that remained was likely to get himself "killed". Although...Farrin hadn't gotten to where he's at just based on his luck. He had a level of skill that was above most other first years, and that was saying something. Maybe, in the future, it would be better to test some other things with the student. Either way, that was down the line. Better to figure out a way to get him knocked out now than later.

The explosions the mines caused weren't confined to just Farrin. Some of the other upperclassmen had also managed to penetrate deep into the territory as well, and once he laid eyes on the building in question Farrin would see two other students standing huddled on either side to the entrance. One looked fairly shell-shocked, and the other had a look of consternation upon his face, almost like he was mentally preparing himself.

t was slow work. Glacial even, but progress was progress. Lone Wolf's apparent preference for ranged encounters might convey a lack of close-range strength, which is where Farrin truly shined, but this wasn't like the time-turner's bout with Leonid. As advanced as he was, Farrin had been using his quirk for a while now and the journey wasn't over yet. Even if he did make it to Lone Wold, would he be in any condition to apprehend him? Even if his assumption proved correct, Lone Wolf was a UAU professor. He had experience, and certainly some form of close-range capabilities. 

Farrin put a pause on the thought as he turned one final alleyway to the sight of the two other students standing at the base of the tower. He had crossed the distance. Now he just had to get inside, press past whatever traps lay within, and then take on one of UAU's pro-hero educators. No problem... 

The freshman student inched his way ahead. A few scorch marks and other explosive residue like shattered metal bits and wiring lay strewn through the street. The other two students had set off a few explosives closing in, which meant the way was mostly cleared. So, Farrin relied on his temporal senses to warn him of any danger. This close to the building, Lone Wolf would have to be leaning out a window, looking almost straight down to take his shot, so it was likely safe to approach. When he closed in toward the building entrance, he took a knee beside the two other students. 

"Oi," he started in a hushed tone, "either o' yuh have any idea what tricks might be waitin' fer us inside?"  

They weren't freshmen, so these two might have more experience with the professor than Farrin. Experience they could collectively pool and hopefully take some educated guesses from. It was the one thing Farrin was missing. Raw experience.

The more shell shocked of the two just shook his head, letting out a breath. "We're dead. It's just a matter of when-"

"Shove it," the other says, shaking his head before looking over at Farrin. "The crazy bastard changes the final traps every time he runs this exercise. I have no idea what he used overseas, but it's like he wrote the manual on all things explosive." He points to something, almost invisible to the naked eye, but after a moment Farrin would recognize it as a tripwire. "I'm trying to figure out if it's a herring or if it's-"

"Can we get going already?!" The more volatile of the pair would step back, holding his hand out as the air would seemingly begin to freeze around him, ice beginning to form along the wire in order to make it visible. "There, we can see it, let's go already!" Before either could stop him, he'd step over the wire...only for the frame to blow up and send him back out into the street.

The other student just looked at his now-dazed counterpart, sighing. "You look new. The short of it is, this building is the final gauntlet. Unfortunately, no one ever really knows what's inside. Pretty sure that was a motion tracker that set that off...what can you do? At the very least, we can maybe get to his floor."

arrin's expression fell flat across his face. Peer #1 was certainly lacking in the steadfast nature demanded of most heroes. Calling it quits just because the opposition was formidable? Never. If they quit against a professor here, what would happen when up against real villains beyond UAU's walls? The stakes were real out there. In here, they benefitted from do-overs and relative safety. Peer #2, however, had Farrin's attention. 

"I could always try ta' slow-" 

Before Farrin could finish, Peer #1 made his move. Had he waited, Farrin could have encased the entire rig with a slow field. If it detonated, they would have at least a few extra seconds to retreat before the explosive force escaped the confines of his field and the after effect. Alas, it wasn't meant to be. Peer #1 was an odd mix, one part timid yet one part brazen. Resigned, yet eager. That had cost them. As he blew by Farrin and the other student, the time-turner couldn't help but consider how useful another body on the field against a professor would have been. 

Turning back to Peer #2, he answered, "I can make fields that speed things up or slow 'em down. I can wrap it around people or otherwise create fixed fields in the air or around objects n' such. The effects last as long as somethin' remains in the field, n' a few seconds after it passes beyond those fields." 

It didn't take a genius to guess there was an element of time at work, but Farrin typically kept mum on those details with strangers. Sometimes, people expected the whole temporal shebang. Time travel? Not possible. Or, at least, not for him. Farrin had tried many times to no avail. 

"I've mostly been usin' debris, rocks n' such, ta' toss 'round out 'ere ta' set of proximity mines prematurely. We can likely do the same in 'ere, but I dun' know what else might be waitin'. How 'bout yerself? What's yer' quirk?"

"That ought to be useful, if we can figure out what traps are inside." He shifts in place, taking a tentative step forward. "I can give life to origami creatures. It's super useful in a situation like this, but it's also the reason why I didn't flat out walk in right away. It's like a video game where-"

"Gooooood morning, campers!" The loudspeakers in the building came to life, shocking the other student. "You have made it this far, but don't drop your guard yet! Thankfully for you, the school has banned all use of trap doors that lead you to the bottom floors, because they told me I got a little too enthusiastic with my 'floor of death'. So instead, have some fun with the lovely slaughter-naughts and murder-golems I managed to strategically transfer from one of the other courses. Enjoy!"

The other student just sighed, shaking his head as he began to move, taking out what looked like a few pre-made birds from a pouch. Sure enough, from a side room to their right would be a few (poorly) dressed up robots, beginning to move towards their intended targets. "Man's a lunatic, I swear. Let's go, we need to find the stairs as soon as possible!"

loor by floor, Farrin and the second year student cleared their way up the building. Time-tuned senses saved Farrin from the worst of the damage, but battling through a horde of villain bots and the many explosives Lone Wolf had rigged the building with was wearing him down. By the looks of it, his ally too. Fists flew, and machines were made into spare parts, but the bots, too, were rigged to blow upon "death." The first explosion had blown Farrin across the floor, right into another two proximity charges. The first, he had escaped unscathed. The second, however, blew him right back towards the stairwell he came from. 

The search for Lone Wolf proved to be a war of attrition unto itself. One Farrin was winning with the help of the second year, but it hadn't come without cost. Each battle left its mark. The ascent would have deterred others long ago, yet the two rising the tower now suffered death by a thousand cuts. By the time Farrin kicked the final door in, finally finding the UAU sadist professor, blood had seeped into his hero outfit and trickled down his arms. 

"We're," Farrin huffed, "takin' yuh' in." 

The words were robbed of Farrin's usual confidence and stoicism. Yes, he had gone toe to toe with Leonid and nearly prevailed, but that match started with both combatants on equal footing in terms of physical condition. Lone Wolf may have been untouched, but Farrin and the second year were injured. They had the numbers advantage, but Lone Wolf had experience. The time-turner wouldn't back down, but he knew bad odds when he saw them. This wasn't going to be easy.
