"Ah'm askin' whether ya remember y'r quirk awakenin' or whether ya got it some other way!" Retsu hissed in a low tone. She wasn't able to hide the desperation in her question. Retsu knew very little thus far about Bilrost but was it possible that...
No, that was highly unlikely. Nothing she'd learned hinted at what she'd seen the woman in front of her do beyond the broadest of lines. One thing at a time, the data contained in the scientist's files might be able to clear things up anyway.
Retsu's eyes immediately went to the hammer when it formed. The pain in her left eye briefly abated at the same time. That pissed her off something fierce but simultaneously gave her some clarity. "Good enough," she responded while tossing a frag grenade out the other end of the alley, both to sell the ruse and just in case the light-winged fook was intending to come their way.
"None a' y'r business," Retsu fired back with a snarl as she caught the rifle. She had no interest in giving info that the woman could feed to her pro hero cronies, the last thing she wanted was for them to figure out how much she knew. "Important part is that the fooker goes down. 'nless ya want 'im experimentin' on more kids."
Racking the slide on her rifle Retsu got ready to get back in action. "Be careful and stay at range. Dey've got someone' who ken nab quirks." The last thing she wanted was for those fookers to get a hold of more of them. Never again. "Name's Bakuretsu. Dun' get in mah way or y'r next."
Aiming her rifle out of the alley she fired several more shots to empty the mag, slotted in a new one and tossed it back to Junsuina with one hand and a grenade -with the pin still attached this time- with the other.
"Y'all hero types are all 'bout collateral, aint'cha? Pretend ta be both sides of the foite, ah'll go around and fook i'm up when 'e drops 'is guard."

"Deal!" Retsu lied without any hesitation. She hadn't decided yet at all. So long as it kept him off her back she was more than happy to let him believe otherwise however. Who knew, she might even follow through. If this fooker somehow made Rui afraid she sure as hells didn't wanna find out why exactly that was. That said she didn't trust his offer either. She knew damn well that in their trades a truce only lasted until the moment the threat was mitigated and one's back was turned. If either of them dropped their guard the other was sure to make it their final mistake.
A manic grin settled on Retsu's features. Another dance on the razor's edge it was.
"Good rules make fer good friends!" Retsu shouted between thunder cracks and gunfire. "Rule fookin' one. Ya drag any fookin' trouble inta mah backyard y'r gettin' shot!"
Might made right and Retsu was about to prove her point. Her gun rang out several more times taking out a few of the remaining gang members that hadn't fled yet before she turned her attention to the next set of threats.
This was going to be a problem.
Retsu had a hunch, call it a theory, that discount Thor was more on the 'punish evil' kinda side than the 'fook the law' one. With her bombs she was pretty sure she could mop the floor with Carrion but it was much more likely that she'd have to deal with another fight after if he found out she was Bakuretsu. She wasn't exactly unknown anymore nor was her signature style any secret.
"Ah, what a pain."
Hoisting her rifle higher -a task that was harder than it seemed with one arm- she fired a shot at one of the quirkers heading for Nobu and then several more at the rough area of the wall they were crawling to provide covering fire. The last thing she wanted was to get flanked because he wasn't up to snuff.
Especially not when she was limited to fisticuffs and Temper. Watching Carrion crawl down she readied herself for close quarters combat. The element of surprise was lost and with the chaos of melee inbound the time for moral high grounds, arguments and grandstanding was over.
For in a conflict like this it didn't matter who was right, only who was left. tagged: Nobu || word count: 407 || notes: x

If her eyebrow went up any higher it'd need a private pilot license. Lady Kindness? A new villain? It sounded like the kind of name someone would use to con a bunch of orphans into slowly doing worse and worse shit until they were past the point of no return. Retsu didn't give a shit about kids but she wasn't exactly looking forward to having to fight any. If this 'Lady Kindness' was up to what she suspected she was nipping that threat in the bud before it could come back to bite her.
Nah, scratch that. As the woman kept talking two different theories came to mind. Either she was a cult recruiter or completely off her rockers. That was almost a relief. She had plenty of experience dealing with the latter and the former tended to be rather predictable albeit a fucking pain to deal with. Blessed by Wrath? Hah. She hadn't been blessed by shit, everything she had she'd taken by herself. Her wrath had been molded by her own two hands, not bestowed upon her by some fookin' asshole with a god complex. Her left eye stung painfully below her eyepatch. Wait... Was that what she meant? Retsu's brow furrowed and she squinted in suspicion.
Perhaps it was paranoid of her to think it was connected but paranoia was necessary when people were always out to kill you.
"Blessed by wrath, ey?" She asked back with edge in her tone. Leaving just enough time for the woman, no, Megumi to elaborate if she felt like it Retsu continued. "Bakiri Retsu, but ah'm guessin' ya already knew that." Her identity wasn't exactly secret anymore, not since the raid on her workshop. "Which begs the question, da fook does Kindness want with the kinda shit ah make?"
She was making a bit of a logical leap in assuming the woman thought she was 'blessed by kindness' but it wasn't that much of a stretch. No crazy was gonna claim someone else was 'blessed' without they themselves also having a god-given power of sorts, probably a better one even. Assuming it was kindness was, in a way, Retsu's own version of kindness. Because if Megumi claimed she had some sort of 'blessings' of the whole lot and Retsu was below her heads were gonna roll.

The opposition seemed to be folding. While that might seem like a good thing Retsu didn't trust it one bit. The day she didn't run into some random problem that turned the entire situation upside down she was buying a lottery ticket. Case in point, just as she'd finished punching one of them in the face, grabbing his hair and putting Temper through his chin one of the morons activated the sonar.
It didn't do nearly as much on land as it would underwater but within this enclosed space it echoed blasting their ears with the sound of a hundred rusty door hinges.
"Turn that fookin' thing off!" Retsu shouted in the direction of Olivia who was standing a bit closer to it than she herself was. Whether the mercenary could hear her over this abhorrent screeching remained to be seen.
With a throaty growl Retsu swung Temper to and fro leaving sizzling wounds and severed limbs in her wake as she fought her way over to the infernal device as well. If this gave her tinnitus someone was going to pay.

BLOW UP! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 99/100 Without the accompanying pain Retsu's anger lacked its usual staying power and faded like snow before the sun. Instead it was replaced by confusion.
"Ya don't know?"
Pinching herself as hard as she could only static showed instead of blood. That was... She didn't know what to think about that. Furious rage of course, but other than that Retsu wasn't sure how to handle it. An absent-minded grunt answered Taro's thanks as she wracked her brain to figure out what the hells she should do about this. Interruption arrived and Taro left before she could think of a solution. Well, there was nothing quite like an immediate problem to push an existential crisis aside.
"Guess y'r as fookin' dense as ya look. Should'a run, all outta chances now."
As if to emphasize her statement Retsu tossed a high explosive right at Hedgerock's torso while avoiding a retaliatory spine.

Something wasn't adding up. That thought went through her mind as she slid down the wall and had her rifle taken from her. Retsu had only narrowly managed to avoid taking the hammer head on, her leg lifting to 'roll with the punches' so to say and minimize the blow but the chains had arrived faster than she was able to avoid them.
That by itself was odd.
There were plenty of things that outsped her of course but usually her instincts tended to prioritize making sure to avoid the more dangerous strikes at the cost of tanking the less lethal ones. Getting chained in place within view of an opponent that could fire holes through buildings while the source of said chains stayed safely outside of the line of fire certainly qualified as a death sentence. So what was it that caused her instincts to count the hammer as the more dangerous hit? The only thing she could think of was intent. Live long enough in the back alleys of Tokyo and you learn to read malice in someone's body language. The person in front of her didn't have killer instincts nor even the apathy for life that let one lead someone to their death.
Well, it was more likely that this entire thought process was just post hoc justification for her slip-up but if a lack of self-awareness hurt Retsu would be screaming 24/7. Besides, the fact that she'd been pulled out of view supported her theory. Her ego wouldn't let her admit her mistake, she'd hear the woman out and find out exactly what felt off. Taking in a rasping breath Retsu heard her out and responded.
"Ah'm all ears." Her ribs had taken the brunt of the impact and she was fairly sure one of them had cracked again. That old injury never ceased to cause her problems. Darn. As her eyepatch slid off from the impact a sharp pain shot through it making her grit her teeth. She really should be staying on the move but she needed a moment to catch her breath. Retsu could only hope it wouldn't come back to bite her.
" 'fore that though ah'ma need ta ask a question a' me own. Quirk a' yours, ya always had it or did somethin' else 'appen that made ya get it?"

Quite a lot had changed since the completion of the first favor that Retsu owed Elias. The simple combat knife she'd owned had been switched out for Temper, its hilt appearing similar but the blade being a flame hot enough to melt steel instead of the simple cutting tool it'd been before. Compared to the rest of her upgraded arsenal it was barely worth mentioning. Grenades that had once rained terror all over their victims were further refined into tools of mass destruction with a cruel inventiveness only the maddest of scientists could match. Monofilament wires, napalm, thermite or thermobaric, you name it and she probably had it. So too had her long-range capabilities increased. Her rifle now traded volume of fire for more potent single shots and a grenade launcher allowed certain types of her more explosive armaments to hit targets at much further distances than before.
The external changes were far from the only ones either.
Experience had further tempered Retsu into someone approaching the limits of what was humanly possible without relying on quirk-boosted physiology. Almost a year of dancing on the razor's edge had molded uncontrollable anger into a weapon that ebbed and flowed, adding power where needed and fading away to reveal a mind honed through conflict where brute force didn't suffice. Revelations had found their mark as well, Retsu recalled with a grim look as a sharp spike of pain shot through her left eye and the side of her head, some bigger than others. One in particular had spiraled out of control through a single lapse of judgement and lit a fire beneath her that sought to burn all there was to nourish the flame while desperately searching for anything to further fuel the inferno.
Retsu was dying.
She didn't know how much longer she had. That made everything that much more pressing until she found a cure, if there even was one. She hadn't held back anything for today's task. Loaded for bear was an understatement. Get in, get shit done, get out and go back home. That was the plan. Retsu was well aware that those never survived first contact but so long as their enemies didn't either that wouldn't matter.
"Understood," Retsu replied through her own earpiece. She'd packed plenty of the necessary equipment, an entire backpack full of it in addition to the contents of her grenade harness. Only one part of Elias's explanation struck her as potentially running into trouble if they didn't plan for it in advance. "Oy, Rui. Ken you swim?"
It'd be problematic if no one checked whether she could swim what with her quirk and the little devil just vanished beneath the waves when she was most needed.

'He was there'
The realization hit Retsu like a brick when Rui pointed at Araki. That fooker had been there the day Dream World ended and she'd finally found out what was so-
She pushed the thought aside. It didn't matter, not anymore. Only the future did. Even as she made the justification her hand clenched around Temper's hilt.
" 'e a Project too?" She asked Rui with emotion laden in her words. Retsu herself didn’t realize it, her focus entirely external at the moment. Araki’s survival depended on Rui’s answer. If he wasn’t one, anger would win out and she’d take him down with extreme prejudice regardless of what it’d take or how much he might know.
Perhaps him opening fire on Olivia saved his life as Retsu's priority instantly shifted to taking the entire group down, instincts taking over where emotions had held the reins before.
A grenade was in flight before Retsu had even considered how to act, her actions not slowed by the heavy chains of thought as she kicked off to the side to avoid whatever gunfire might have been fired at her initial position. She didn't stop moving, a single smaller step breaking up the pace of her motions before she rushed further to the side. The concussive grenade landed in the middle of the group and tossed bodies all around just as Retsu finished drawing her rifle. Several shots were loosed and between the combined efforts of her, Yingshe and Mummy the guards were done for before long.
The moment the battle was done she pulled out one of her less used grenades. A nonlethal one that covered a small area in a rubbery adhesive foam to lock someone in place. Without the right chemical to neutralize it the foam could lock someone down for hours. Well, if it got time to set without being torn, the target wasn't too strong and enough of them was covered. There was a reason she didn't use it often. It was downright useless against anyone conscious enough to move even a little before it finished setting.
Aiming her gun at Araki during the minute it took to cover him and set Retsu was ready to open fire and put him down completely should he resist. Rui had said he was tough, not that he was immortal. Unless Retsu was mistaken that meant he could be put down permanently with enough firepower.
Regardless of what happened she'd move on after Araki was handled. There was much of the facility left to explore and who knew how much time they had. The next notable feature they found caused her to stop in place while her eye went wide. It was... a playground? But that wasn't the part that she was focused on, no, that went to a mural in the back. She recognised one of the people on it...
"Rui," Retsu said shakily, "Oy, Rui. What the fook is that."

Well, she was still on her feet. That was something. Her knees were going to be killing her tomorrow though with that landing. Having ridden the falling earth down she wasn't as badly hurt as she could have been but she didn't exactly float to a stop either. Well, if nothing else the lack of light here made her headache lessen. Shame she had to change that before something snuck up on her. Drawing Temper she ignited the blowtorch dagger and lifted it over her head to restore at least some visibility.
Not a moment later she had to duck to the side to avoid the metallic webbing. That was too close for comfort. Hearing an absolutely horrifying chittering Retsu drew her rifle with one hand, put a bullet through the spider's head and then another just for good measure. More webbing shot out at her forcing her to dodge again, a move that put her off balance and caused a third string to hit her arm. Clicking her tongue Temper cut through the steel wire, several sizzling droplets charring her arm and causing her to hiss but setting her free nevertheless. It left her forearm covered in steel wires but she'd dealt with worse. So long as it wasn't poisonous she'd be fine.
Retsu let out a rattling sigh. It was finally time to go deal with the source of that horrifying chittering. Turning on her heel and jogging at an even pace so she could either speed up or slow down to dodge more webbing Retsu approached the area lit up by the mushrooms and more specifically Rui. The barrel of her rifle aimed at the little devil's head right before she pulled the trigger. If this was another clone that'd deal with the problem, if it was the real Rui she'd just shake it off.
"Oh, hi Rui."
The real one then. Dropping to a knee Temper sliced through the metallic webbing holding Rui captive -and Rui herself- while Retsu aimed her rifle at any spider that came within view and opened fire. Unless she hit the eyes again it might not be enough to pierce but so long as it kept them busy long enough it'd suffice for now.
"Friend a' yours?" Retsu asked Rui while nodding in Kiku's direction. Either way they should move soon. If Mushroom Girl came with them that could be useful, they wouldn't get anything done if they were left on the dark.
TL;DR: -Retsu shoots a spider and gets webbing on the forearm, cuts herself loose but still has steel webbing around one forearm -She then heads over to Rui and Kiku, cutting the former free and asking about the latter.

Well, when Retsu had gotten word that someone was trying to find her this certainly wasn't what she'd expected. Sure, appearances could be deceiving but this woman didn't exactly look like the usual sort that tried to track her down here in Shinjuku, either out of some stupid sense of justice or search for revenge."Yo," Retsu called out casual as could be. Shards of glass crunched beneath her feet as she trotted out of the alleyway, seemingly unarmed. Anyone that knew the slightest bit about her would know she wasn't. The hilt of Temper was in one of her pockets and she wore a grenade harness beneath her black jacket. A pistol too was concealed in a shoulder holster beneath the very same article of clothing. "Heard ya were lookin' fer me."Her guard didn't drop for even a second. She'd scoped out the surroundings before approaching Megumi but that brief search wasn't nearly enough to tell whether the woman was truly alone. Nor did she trust the informants she had around here any further than she could throw them. The fact that this woman had shown up less than a day after she'd moved her workshop back to Shinjuku wasn't reducing Retsu's caution in any way either. It smelled of a trap."Bakuretsu. Ta what do ah owe the 'onor?"

“Ah got the fooker sneakin’ up on ya! All the screamin’ ‘nd thunder made it roite easy fer ‘im. Y'r welcome!” Retsu shouted back, ignoring the insinuation that any of these maggots were her friends. Blinking stars out of her eyes she tried to line up a shot and let out a muffled curse when the spots in her vision prevented her from being sure she could hit the mysterious interloper. Well, that and the fact that he'd gotten behind the dumpster while his quirk's attack had seared their mark into her corneas.
She could probably still shoot through it if she knew exactly where he was but she couldn't afford to miss. Hells, she only had a hunch anyway a single good shot would put him down, there was no way to be sure. It'd prove to be a costly mistake if she turned out to be wrong. Still, she didn't feel like she was. All it would take to end this was one good hit from either of them, their lives set onto a set of scales that would tilt with the slightest nudge.
Firing several more shots into the group of goons that were somehow still increasing in number Retsu continued setting up the 'one'. The enemies that wouldn't help guide her potential nemesis were aimed at with lethal force, the others took hits in an arm or a leg. Enough to make them shout out and draw attention to them but not enough to put them out of the fight.
A noise behind her drew Retsu's attention just in time, her instincts making her shift her rifle to one hand and draw Temper with her other as she spun around. A bone spike grazed her side, the barbed edges tearing through flesh. Only her last second reaction turned it from a potentially lethal one to a glancing blow. She punched at the face of the quirker that had tried to ambush her before he was able to alter his momentum. The man reacted quickly, his weapon retracting back into his palm while his head tilted to the side just enough that her punch went wide.
That was when Retsu ignited Temper and created the least appetizing creme brulee possible on the other side of his head, the flame having acted like a rebuke to Rui. In one ear, out the other. She'd pulled the trigger on her rifle at the same time as she'd ignited her melee weapon, the shot going wide but giving the illusion that she was still focused on the larger scene. Retsu knew better than to show weakness in times like this. But a single moment of that could spell doom.
"Oy! They brought tha fookin' Carrion!"
While Retsu wasn't sure that the lightning wielder would get who she meant there was a fair chance. Carrion was a group of mercenaries that got their name for two reasons: They tended to show up to the scene of battles with a large amount of casualties and 'fed' on the survivors that were weary from combat. The amount of quirkers they possessed with bone-related quirks had led some to believe that there was simply one amongst their ranks capable of some form of biomancy to give each of them a boney weapon but the truth had yet to be confirmed.
All that was known was that they were dangerous and had been active in some form for at least a decade and a half despite the occasional casualty.

Unless there were some serious surprises the group they were after was nothing special. Retsu was going to treat them exactly like the nobodies they were. If she was wrong she'd roll with the punches,
The moment they entered she leveled her rifle at the one furthest back and gave him a forehead piercing before the group at large even caught on to their intrusion. Seeing him tumble down and topple over several oxygen tanks Retsu let out a rasping sigh. Using ranged weapons any further risked blowing this place up entirely. Doing the smart thing she instead drew Temper and ignited her flamethrower dagger. With the rifle back in its sling over her back she sauntered unhurriedly into the melee. She had no plans of getting in there before Yingshe did.

Sometimes the winning move was to not play at all. Retsu almost recoiled physically when she saw what she could swear was a twinkle in his eye. She'd fooked up big time and she was rapidly beginning to realize it. Hang a carrot in front of a horse and they'd walk into the slaughterhouse by themselves and wouldn't you know it, Retsu had just given away what could get her to step over the cliff's edge without looking. That was dangerous. She didn't think she'd be unable to deal with the consequences but it was never a great idea to stack the deck against yourself.
"That so, huh?" Retsu replied with a feigned air of nonchalance before downing her drink entirely in one go. With one smooth move she slammed the drink down and snatched the USB drive from his hands. She'd need to get a hold of a new laptop without any external connections, there was no way in hell she was letting that thing touch anything she'd used before nor anything that could be used to give away her location.
"We'll see. Ah'll 'ave the gauntlets ready in a week. If ya get a 'old a' somethin' worth it they'll be all yours."
She didn't bother to say more before standing up and walking away.
"Same tahm next week, if ya don't show the deal is off."
It was a petty way of attempting to regain control of the whole situation but Retsu didn't care. That rudeness might come back to bite her, sure, but that wasn't what she was thinking of right now.
The tightrope she was treading had just been jostled. She had to get away before she lost control and went off the deep end. That wasn't something she could afford to do. Not right now. Not yet.

With Retsu having entered the house her view of what was going on outside was far more limited. While rolling she would briefly see the girl being hit by her thrown cannon and falling as a result, the case in her other hand clattering to the ground as she did, but the aftermath was something Retsu wasn't privy to.
The moment she crashed into the building Retsu took a glance around and got moving. She didn't know how many of those beams the prick she'd tracked here could fire out nor how big they were but she wasn't taking any chances. Whirling around when conversation resumed outside the building her hand dropped to her thigh, ready to draw Temper at a moment's notice. As she blinked blood out of her left eye she tilted her head partially to the side to prevent more from going into it. She knew better than to try and wipe it away, forehead wounds bled like a bitch, nothing short of properly sealing the wound would stop that blood flow.
The spikes of pain stabbing into her eye like a severe migraine at the very least stopped the friction burn and torn skin from the cannonball that had scraped by her head from being felt all too much. It was a small victory and one that the sheer fury she felt was blotting out entirely. Gritting her teeth so hard her gums bled Retsu focused on the outside situation instead of her own injuries.
She had to stay on the move. Everything else came second. Retsu had no intention of dying without ever knowing what hit her.
---
"Know your place. You are in no position to ask questions," The scientist spoke as if Jun had just told him she'd gotten mud on his authentic antique Persian carpet. "The plight of the unhallowed is of no concern to me. If you wish to see to their safety then rid us of the rabies-infested dog lashing out against its betters. I shall bequeath upon you a truce and no more. Handle pest control before I return, hero, or I shall be forced to defend myself once more."
He had kept walking the entire time he spoke, not a single mention leaving his mouth of the injuries he'd inflicted upon Junsuina moments before. When he reached his daughter his wings arched while he crouched next her hiding both of them from view. Other than the clasps of the case the girl had been carrying clicking open there was little information as to what he was up to.
