As the lesson began to wind down, Mark picked up a broom in order to start collecting the brass that was on the table. There was a nice pile, and he liked collecting it for reuse. At the question he gave her a look, the smallest hint of an eyebrow raising. "Your tuition is what pays me," he says, dumping as many casings as possible into a small bag. He reaches out to take the gun to give it a quick inspection, only to find it was almost in pristine condition. Like nothing had ever happened to it. It was freaky, but after a moment he remembered that Marlene's quirk gave her an affinity for things like that. Pulling a case towards him he set the gun in there, nodding. "But if you want to be literal, then I'll accept payment in the form of you being the best damn shot in the hemisphere." He looked over at her, taking his glasses off. "We'll move on to moving targets next time, let you get accustomed to that." Marlene Lovechild

Mark rolled his eyes, shaking his head. "Something or someone. You'd be surprised what a few rounds of .45 can do to an engine block. Remember, putting a hole in someone should be a last resort, and sometimes you can get someone's attention a lot more by wrecking any gear they have or shattering a weapon they might hold. But that's trick shots we can practice on down the line." He then pointed downrange, indicating the targets. "You have a knack for this sort of thing. When not compensating you're off by what, eighth of an inch? Maybe a fourth? So long as you can hit something the size of a silver dollar with minimal margin of error. But that's what practice is there for. You learn the science on the range within a controlled environment, then you drill in something that isn't control. The range familiarizes you with the tool, the drill familiarizes you with the environments you will be using it in."The glee was not lost on him, and it still scared him. He looked down at the box...wow, that was a lot of spent shells. "We'll...run through this box. Once you feel good we'll pack it up and determine the next piece you can familiarize yourself with. Maybe a nine next time."Marlene Lovechild

"Disappointing," he says, looking downrange again while putting his hands in his pockets. "And Skynet will have to teach me pi first, 'cause I have a very limited grasp on that." The last question was one that he himself struggled with, when he was younger. He remembered vividly a carnival that he, his brother, and father attended one evening; his dad was on the job, something that the two boys didn't know at the time, but there was a revolving duck game that they struggled with. An older gentleman was kind enough to give some pointers: "A moving target is only difficult to hit if you don't know where it's at. If you know what your bullet does at range, and you know where your target is going to be in the time you pull the trigger, you are guaranteed to hit every time." He brought a hand up to his chin, thinking of all the technical details he could throw on her. It was something he wouldn't teach to an actual human as they were numbers and hard to grasp...and they were numbers that he couldn't quite compute in his head, either. He could get away with practice and experience, and adding math to the equation would just ruin his day. "A lot of field work you have to just guess what your ranges are and what the wind is like. Best thing I've learned to do is judge based on what I know. A puff of smoke, a wind chime, football field lengths, even figuring out speed roughly just based on looking at an object in motion. Everything I know is stuff I've put into practice, but it's not perfect. It's up to you to figure out the best way to determine how to put a hole in something...not to mention the why." He looked at the box of .22s, his lips pressed into a line. "I can figure out a way to train on moving targets next time we come out. I'll also see about getting hold of something with a little more punch. .22 is a fun little caliber, but it's also not the best when facing off against an opponent."Marlene Lovechild

Mark just stared at her. One that would peel the paint off a battleship as he casually lowered his shades to observe her. If this were a human person then he might have an effect, but machines were different. Marlene could to an extent emulate people, but what she failed to realize was the way she came off was way too creepy. She had 'joked' about this sort of thing before, even earlier today, but the way Marlene went about it... Mark took a step back after seeing her expression, trying to see something on her neck. "Do you have some sort of emergency shutdown? Something to keep your consciousness from merging with the ghosts in the machine? 'Cause the last thing I want to do is be forced to compute pi all day." That would be an absolute tragedy, especially since he didn't even know what pi was. "Practice makes perfect, and repetition of good habits forms muscle memory. I don't care if you barely chip away at the paper, I want to see those same groupings." Marlene Lovechild

For almost anyone else the flying kukri would be a threat, but Mark had caught enough flying beer bottles chucked his way to know when to reach out to grab something. Still, just in case he turned his body so his dominant hand wouldn't lose a thumb or something, and timing it just right he'd hold the knife in his hand. "Man, UA doesn't know how to promote creativity," he says, holstering the gun and looking over the knife. "Or rather, it doesn't know how to promote it outside the support department. You'd think you kids with your fancy quirks that can rip up the skyline and call down the finger of God could figure out a way to do something mundane with 'em. Like cook up the world's greatest grilled cheese sandwich." His stomach growled at the thought. That apple earlier didn't do him much in terms of whetting his appetite, so food was something on the brain. Either way, he'd get to just barely out of arms' reach of Eli, squatting down as he appreciated the hefty curve of the kukri, bringing a thumb up and lightly pressing the edge of it into his skin. "If you think that your quirk is only good for running away, then you're not thinking strategically enough. I'm proud that you're capable of recognizing some of your weaknesses, especially with your quirk, but sometimes you gotta realize the best way to deal with ranged opponents is to put something between you and them." He set the knife down, letting Eli pick it back up. "I'll give you five minutes to lick your wounds. If you want a hint, bullets have a hard time penetrating asphalt, even from high caliber guns. You'd have to keep in mind that anything hitting above you could ricochet, but you seem mindful enough to think ahead."Elijah

"My goal is to teach you kids weird and wacky skills that villains won't be expecting out in the field. What hero would they expect to use a gun?" The logic to him made sense. He was just doing his job. To any other observer that wouldn't know any better, it would look like she missed. Mark knew better though; looking through the scope would confirm what he expected. Perfect holes through each and every bullseye. It was uncanny, and this meant he had to figure out a way to expound her familiarity with other weapons. Which meant he needed to pull out some of the stuff he had in storage. His contact was not going to be happy. "Consider it a standard American feeling," he says, shrugging. "We literally broke away from our original patron because we didn't want to pay taxes. Our government got up to some wacky shit during the Cold War. And that's not counting anything from the advent of quirks." He let out a sigh. "Hard to have faith that is in place for the people when it does nothing for them."Marlene Lovechild

There was a lot to unpack in that question, but Mark wanted to focus first on the objective at hand. Taking the scope, he watched the progress. While it was impressive, it went contrary to what he was taught. "Remember, consistency is more important than accuracy. You did good there, but you never, ever want to make corrections on your first shot. Especially if you're working with a weapon you're not completely in tune with. Three shots, check your group, adjust, then test again." It was dumb to emphasize this so much, but Mark was also used to dealing with humans. Being taught by humans, teaching humans...and now he was teaching a literal machine. A part of him still wasn't sure if that was a good idea. Which lead to him circling back to the question. "Call it a pride thing. Japan doesn't exactly have the laxest of gun laws, and owning and operating firearms is something that is only taught to various organizations here. It makes sense to an extent, but a part of me wants to rebel against it. But that's the part of me that has a deep distrust of the government and prefers to have security on me at all times." He set the scope down, looking at her again. "You asked, which is grounds enough for me to teach. As much shit as the rest of the world gives the US about our gun laws, it is something that is engrained in us. Basically, I like to think I'd know more than a standard firearms expert here."Marlene Lovechild

"Either or. I've tossed them in a cotton bag before and tumbled them in a dry, laid them in front of a heater, and even gone over them with a hair dryer. Air drying takes a while, but it works. Important thing is making sure they're dry before you load in the powder." He rolled up his sleeve, plunging his arm in to roll the casings around in the water to make sure the detergent could do its work. The water would turn a slight shade of grey, with the bubbles beginning to form on the surface. "I see. I've heard of psychic detectives pinpointing and helping with cases like that, but I've not had any experience on that front. Maybe in the future you can help me with a few things, if I ever pick up cases again." The offer made him glance up, raising an eyebrow but he shrugged at it after a minute. "Guess it couldn't hurt. Like I said, it's antique. Little bit of love might get it working again, so..." Tabitha Yamamura

The gun ejected all the casings at once, and Mark had once again picked up his spotter's scope. "Yeah, you can cover that with a dime," he says, finger tapping on the table. "Let's aim for a target further out. I think we can rule out your posture, so let's try winding just a little bit." He set the scope down, looking back at Marlene. "Winding's a technique to compensate for bullet drop or wind. You're basically aiming at a different point on your target to compensate for factors you have no control over." He pointed out at the target again. "Hence the science part. You want a tight grouping like that to ensure that you're consistent before you attempt to make any efforts to adjust for accuracy. Which is why practicing in your off time is important. When you shoot further out, fire three rounds first then pause. Try to adjust for the rounds hitting just right, but also make sure that you're not getting any bullet drop." He held up his hand. "Every gun is different. Different bullets have different ballistics, and this can vary even if you shoot the same kind of bullet with the same load out of different guns. Consistency is key."The question made him shrug, letting his hand down. "My area of expertise is in environmental awareness. You never know when a villain will catch you by surprise, and you can't take everything at face value. Technically, I'm not certified to be teaching this." He looked downrange again, and at the targets lined up. "I incorporated firearms into my strategies because that's what my old man used in the field, and it's easier to get two-bit thugs to be compliant when they're staring down a barrel chambered in the Lord's caliber."Marlene Lovechild

<"And like my brother, the urge to shoot you is incredibly high!"> He looked up, seeing the intersection and paling a little. <"Dante! Dante, don't-!"> He reached up to grab the 'oh shit' handle on the car, hanging on for dear life. This was one of those moments that he wished and preferred if he was behind the wheel. <"Sonuvah bitch, don't do that! I know this is dire, but we cain't just ignore road laws alluvah sudden!"> At the callout he looked back, seeing the two bikers beginning to gain on them. Unfortunately Mark couldn't just poke his head out as the violent maneuvers put him on high alert, more concerned about navigating through the streets than the bikers themselves. Though once Dante got them into a certain spot Mark took in a deep breath. <"Keep 'er steady,"> he says, sliding his upper body out the window and beginning to line up the shot from his side. It was a little tricky and he wasn't used to this kind of thing, but desperate times and all that. As much as Mark didn't want to agree with Dante about using force like this, the mustang was a nice car. So he squeezed off two rounds, one at each of the bikers, sending them careening off the street and onto the sidewalk. Mark slipped back in, shaking his head as he looked over. <"We have a window, go!">Dante

Mark couldn't help but blink. If he didn't see the small fire coming from the barrel or hear the sound of the bullet he would have thought that she didn't fire the gun. Either way, he picked up a small spotters scope and looked downrange, aaaaand... "Well, based on your stance, nothing." He frowned a little. The metal target had pinged once the round impacted, and the mark was almost dead center. "Assuming you're doing everything perfect then the sights might be off, the round wobbled in flight, or some other factor. Shooting's a science, though, and you can't make a clear conclusion with just one bullet." He set the scope down, looking back over at Marlene. "Good shot or not, when you're first starting out you want to focus on consistently over accuracy. Full send it, aim at that same spot again and lets see what your grouping looks like." Mark knew beyond shadow of a doubt that the girl's consistency was going to be almost as devastating as her accuracy; it's part of the reason why he didn't want to do this. But they were here now, and Mama didn't raise no quitter. Marlene Lovechild

Mark turned, and he was not prepared to be barraged by questions like that one after another. Which...was different. He was always giving students basic answers to questions, partly because he didn't really care but also because he wanted them to figure things out for themselves. All he was doing was providing basic information on how to operate in the field. This was different, however. "You want the best control with your dominant hand. The dominant hand is the one that is going to take the brunt of the recoil, and will always be the one you're firing with. Your other hand is there to help stabilize and provide a platform to ensure the best accuracy. It's why one-handed use is capable of being used." He lowered his arms, setting his gun back down as he looked at her form. "You're as good as it gets. You could maybe bring your right foot back a little, but that's only to help widen your base. With a peashooter like this it doesn't generate enough recoil to warrant it." He paused, a little, shrugging. "There's a lot of positions out there that can be used, but this is the most common. One-handed, or the badass way, lets you fire from a much wider range of angles or positions. As I mentioned, it's not as stable accuracy wise, but with enough practice you could be pretty deadly with a one-handed grip. There's also the whole Cowboy thing, but that's a whole other lesson for another time." With a sigh he reached for his gun again, holding it up sideways and hunching over. "And this is one of many ways to hold it wrong. Poor grip, bad angle for your body to absorb the recoil, you don't get a good sight picture, and you look stupid. Ran into some kids like this once outside a major city, and between two guns and twenty shots the most damage they did was hurt a wall's feelings. Anyways, line up the front post with the rear sight." Straightening out and setting his gun down again, he pointed at the shaped metal at the back of the gun. "That little 'V' is there to set the post. Put the post on one of those targets out there and pull the trigger."Marlene Lovechild
