IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Ana’s mind ran a million miles a minute behind her strange eyes as she looked between the data and Farrin posing his question. “That’s the exciting part! We get to see if I can! And you get to test if I’m right!” The combination of coming up with such a request and trusting Ana with it was essentially putting his life in her hands, but that was what he had agreed to. Fortunately, Ana was as competent as she was strange. Most of the trial and error stage would be handled without a living test subject.
Which meant alone.
“Now go away! I have work to do! You can come back in…”
Ana paused as she calculated how long it would take her to make something complex on the premise of hypotheticals on top of her school workload. She even gave herself some wiggle room. She was generous to herself like that.
“Three days!”

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
“What a piece of junk!”
The exclamation was surprisingly articulate considering it had been said through a mouthful of fries. Ana always had been good at getting to the point. She was almost as good at eating fries. A fact demonstrated by her immediately stuffing her face with another handful while she waited for Jun to set all of the equipment Ana had burdened her with so that she could snack on the way over.
She finished off the current round of fries, more had been promised, tossed her trash in a nearby receptacle, then began to rummage through one of the totes. “Have you ever heard of Theseus' paradox?” The question was a bit muffled because Ana was practically head first in the top box. When she resurfaced, she was holding what appeared to be a pair of dent pullers. *Heavily* modified dent pullers. Nothing ever remained basic once Ana got her hands on it. From the dent pullers to the boat before her. That had been part of the deal to pry Ana away from her lab to offer her services, after all.

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
As Farrin was busy channeling his Quirk into the liquid metal suspended in the vial, Ana resumed rummaging until she found what looked to be some sort of watch. She immediately slapped it onto Farrin’s wrist. The screen flickered to life and her computer monitor shifted to mirror the same data.
“Theoretically!”
Ana’s eyes flickered from the ongoing charging to the twinned displays and back again before elaborating. “Mercury is a superconductor of electricity! Time is obviously different, but they are both, at their core, energy! The key here is mercury’s ability to both change and remain compositionally uninfluenced by outside sources! Especially time! Unlike many metals, mercury doesn’t degrade over time or when exposed to radiation!” She nodded along with her own explanation before taking a break to continue.
And the scientist would have kept going. Many had suffered through her long-winded explanations, even when she tried to dumb them down. Which she didn’t quite often in her opinion. How else would other people understand her? However, the device she had slapped on Farrin beeped.
“Stop!”
Only the most observant with the keenest of sight could have been able to detect what the device had with eyes alone. Time in this context was energy. Charging something with enough energy led to heat. Heat and mercury meant gas. It was contained in the vial for now, but Ana didn’t feel like being laid up in bed with mercury poisoning if that changed.
“Interesting! How do you feel about in-suit air conditioning? The alternative is being poisoned and possibly dying!”

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
“Of course I won’t dissect you! That implies you died! And if you died, then my work didn’t hold up in the field!”
She was all business, of course. Whether or not that was the only reason Ana wouldn’t dissect him was still a mystery, but Farrin was safe. For now.
The machine hummed with the quiet telltale melody of surging electricity as it scanned the Hero student from head to toe. Her computer logged the readings. Were it not for the suit spread over the lab table, her too-wide eyes would have been glued to the screen. As it were, Ana was taking in the tailoring task before her. She felt the current fabric, traced the existing lines, and made mental notes. One of which was to ask Gen later whether such attire made Farrin an edgelord. She learned so many new terms from Gen since they had started dating!
A higher pitched whir followed by silence indicated the scanner had finished. Ana turned back to her computer to look over the results. Abnormal, of course. But nearly everyone with a Quirk ran abnormal these days. It was a key data point in the theories about impending Quirk Singularity. Ana’s smile widened. The concept was exciting to her as a scientist.
“You can step out now! 100% confirmed genetic anomaly like the rest of us Quirk havers!”
Perhaps a little more or a little less an anomaly depending on who Farrin was compared to at the moment. The theory about his temporal energy and mercury was almost as exciting as that of Quirk Singularity. She could also test the hypothesis here and now, unlike with the latter. So she started rummaging around the lab’s nooks and crannies until she turned up a vial filled with amorphous metal.
“Think fast!”
Ana tossed Farrin the delicate vial without further warning.

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Either this man was absolutely delusional, either due to genetic mental illness or Quirk side effects, or he was living proof of parallel universes and alternate timelines. Were the latter true, he was a scientific treasure trove of potential info beyond just Quirk research. Even if it was the former, the Quirk research would at least prevent it from being a waste of time for Ana with the added boon of a psychology experiment. Ana was here to refine her sub-specialties after all. The human mind and the ways it could break counted toward that goal. It was a win-win for her either way.
She maintained the eerie poker face of :) as she simply replied, “I see!” The currents beneath her words and beyond strange eyes brimmed with curiosity and excitement. And more than a little desire to dissect Farrin to reveal what secrets she could. Metaphorically, of course.
Ana motioned over to a vertical full body scanner off to the side of the room. It was large on its own, but the lines running through the casing indicated segmented metal plates that could adjust to accommodate larger entities. Not that it would be needed here. What gifts Farrin’s Quirk provided were more abstract than abnormal physical traits. The scanner would give her a baseline on just what she was working with.
“Sign the papers then step inside!”
The sound of papers printing punctuated her orders. She relocated them to the tabletop so he could comply. “I’ll check your vitals and basic physical information first! This will also give me measurements for the suit without needing to get hands on!” Ana wasn’t prude, but some Quirks made it… undesirable to personally touch her guinea pigs. Science always had a solution. Multi-tasking adept that she was, Ana pushed another line of questioning onto Farrin to get to the aforementioned solutions for his specific request sooner.
“Any preferences on style or aesthetic?”
No reason she couldn’t give him form and function.
Unless he had bad tastes.

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Ana had internally come to her own conclusion about the hypothetical metal being mercury before Farrin released the knowledge into the wild at the end of his agreement to her terms and the necessary info dump that followed. Which had also subsequently explained the field he had earlier created in the doorway. Now whether or not the hypothesis about potential material held up remained to be seen. However, there was a precedent for the liquid metal’s connection to time in ancient devices known as clepsydras and given mercury’s tendency to be rather unbothered by both the passage of time and radiation…
At the very least, and for better or worse, it was bound to be an interesting experiment. “I will add a maintenance clause to the contract!” It was a small sacrifice to protect her intellectual investments. Fortunately for Farrin, that also contributed to his own protection given he had specifically requested a suit. It did nothing to spare him from further probing by Ana though. She knew how and why she had come to her quicksilver conclusion. But how had he? She retrieved her laptop to pull up and edit the necessary paperwork. Even in doing so, her gaze rarely flickered from her new test subject and her mouth was busy forming inquiries.
“I have some ideas for testing, but first things first! You said you had cause to think mercury would be useful here! Why is that? Most people don’t turn to toxic substances as a source of usefulness! Especially not to help with something not fully understood yet itself!”
Quirk research was still a young science and those with Quirks that bordered on science fiction were both particularly interesting and problematic. Which is why they were so appealing to Ana. But again, she was a genius and Farrin was… a Hero student. Aside from Gen and Jun, Ana didn’t think very highly of them if at all. Plus, Farrin had said himself that he didn’t know how it all worked. So how had he stumbled upon such a theory in the first place?

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
She never blinked. Not once since she had arrived during the entire spiel did her oversized bright eyes ever close. They remained fastened on Farrin just as firmly as the smile remained on her lips. In fact, she was completely stationary.
Like a cat watching its prey.
Until they were about to pounce. Ana’s form of pouncing was less volatile. It came through the widening of her grin and a simple correction.
“The best!”
Ana approached Farrin, or rather, the door he still stood in front of. “I’m the best in the Support Department!” Hero students weren’t the only ones proud of themselves and what they could do. Was it true? Perhaps. More importantly, Ana believed it was true and her conviction was nigh overwhelming. She also had the grades and the reputation to back it up. Otherwise, no one would ever seek her out over the people pleasing doormat that was Kei Hada. He was capable enough, sure. He could even meet most people’s typical mundane needs — until they needed anything that could be considered high concept because nice didn’t beget innovation. Genius did.
And Ana was a genius.
She opened the door and beckoned him to follow her into the lab. “I’ll take your request, but you’ll need to sign NDA forms since this is going to be pushing scientific boundaries and involve the invention of proprietary tech!” Her mind raced as she explained the most basic of her requirements for working with people on anything that would involve the advancement of technology and what Farrin was asking for definitely counted as that. He seemed to already have some sort of idea what material he wanted to use, so Ana was already playing catch up. She shut the door after they entered and locked it for privacy before fixing Farrin in her wide eyed gaze once more.
“I’ll also need to study how your Quirk works!”
That was a basic given considering the core concept he wanted was something that worked with and enhanced his Quirk. It bought her time to scan through a periodic table in her mind. The material needed to be a good energy conductor, but flexible. That ruled out several elements immediately. Ana reached deeper into her knowledge and several possibilities presented themselves as forerunners.
“Is that agreeable for you?”

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
“It was a very high quality photo booth!”
That was all Jun managed to get out of Ana in regards to her comment that the two troublemakers looked good together. There was no way of telling if Ana was being her usual literal self and commenting on the camera quality used in the photo booth or if she was just being coy and elusive about the matter. She was so often all of these things that the chances were evenly split. Perhaps the only tell came in the form of a verbal addition.
“And he only sucks if he doesn’t like you!”
No one would ever believe Ana if she tried to explain Gen’s softer side. So she wouldn’t elaborate. He wouldn’t want her to anyway. And even if she did, he didn’t like most people, so her point was moot.
“I want fries!”
The abrupt shift in Ana’s focus from her totally-not-boyfriend as far as Jun was considered (in Ana’s head) was followed by Ana taking her pictures back and shoving everything under her bed. “All done! Let’s go!” Neither of them were anywhere near done, but Ana wanted fries and once Ana wanted something, she got it. At least at school.

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
A glance was all Ana could spare from her delicate tasks to the strange barrier erected between herself and the man who responded to her brusque question. The former interested her far more than the latter. Everyone inevitably wanted her help, after all. That was a given. Studying Quirks, however, was much more exciting. Ana never knew what she would discover until she had, well, discovered it.
A few minutes later Ana popped out of a wall farther down the hall and trotted over to Farrin. Curious as she was about the barrier, she wasn’t about to walk into it herself for testing purposes. The hazmat suit she had been wearing was left behind, secured in a disposal bin of its own. Now that she was less CDC coded, she looked every part the scientist with her short lab coat work over her uniform and her intensely inquisitive eyes boring into a potential new test subject.
“Farrin O’Rourke,” she said, repeating his name back at him through the Cheshire grin adorning her lips. It fit the accent he had just as much as her own name echoed her ancestry. “So what do you want?” Her second question was no less blunt than the first and given her reputation, about as polite as it would get.

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Ana took the tube when it was handed to her, but she didn’t move to open it. Her eyes had slid off akin to the container where they remained unblinking and she remained unspeaking for a full minute. It almost seemed like she was frozen. Only the subtle rise and fall of her chest from breathing hinted otherwise.
Finally she stirred and the motion responsible for it was probably the last one Jun expected — Ana handed her the still sealed poster back. The intensity of the mask she had reconstructed earlier faded. Her curiosity about another, probably half-naked man, was practically non-existent. She had Gen for that. She had wanted to know what Jun was hiding, and more importantly to know that Jun would share it with her if she wanted.
Ana turned around and went back to her side of the room to collect the pictures of her and Gen before returning to Jun as if the previous exchange had never happened. “Research documents,” Ana chirped. She handed the stack to Jun. The top picture was actually a series of smaller photos in a long strip. Apparently Gen and Ana had invaded a photo booth at some point the previous semester to practice the dumbest poses ever. Given how the two of them tended to be, it was probably unclear whether they were being genuine or mocking people that used photo booths.

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Anyone who had the misfortune of knowing Ana also knew where to find her 90% of the time. Her lab. The other 10% was divided up between her dorm room and skulking around with Gen in places they couldn’t be found. Luckily for one Farrin O'Rourke, that moment in time was part of the 90%. Then again, maybe it wasn’t luck given his Quirk. Who knew!
“Who’s asking,” came the retort from Ana. The words were almost obfuscated between her accent and the fact that she was speaking through a vivid orange hazmat suit. Rows of chemicals in beakers and flasks lined a table top. One was emitting an ominous looking plume of smoke. Which was probably why Ana was in a hazmat suit and holding a pair of long metal tongs that were reaching out toward the glass container in question.
“Actually, don’t answer! That requires breathing and that’s very much something you shouldn’t be doing right now! At least, if you enjoy having lungs!”
Regardless of his decision, Ana went about her business and grasped the vial between the tongs gingerly. She moved with equal care across the lab to a station set up for hazardous waste disposal. In spite of the precarious situation, she seemed entirely unbothered and attended to the task with a practiced hand. Perhaps too practiced all things considered.

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
The half-hearted counter inquisition railed against Ana’s mask of amusement and perpetual air of superiority. “My roommate has been through far worse in our dorm,” was the only interruption to dam the stream of words from Robin. Though another almost made its way past Ana’s Cheshire grin and into the open. A dispute, unsurprisingly, against the claim that she owed the other student for picking her apart. In Ana’s mind, she had done her a favor by revealing her weaknesses in a safe space rather than in front of an enemy. Though people always seemed to perceive Ana as an enemy no matter how helpful she was. Only Jun and Gen had seen past that to what lay beneath. And only the latter had ever called her the name that Robin now tossed out so casually.
The facade cracked in ways that only those who knew her could easily read; a tilt of the head and hidden beneath skirt and coat, a twitch of her tail accompanied by yet an even wider smile. “It’s Ana! Ana Borovsky! Not Bright Eyes!” She leaned against the table she had stacked the books on and folded her arms over her chest in a subconscious representation of a wall between the two young women. A wall that Ana’s interest had her peering over.
Most people would have left to spare themselves from Ana’s caustic personality by now. Something about picking your battles and Ana was a battle very few people picked. Which meant this other woman was stubborn and genuinely stubborn people had something so many of the students at UAU seemed to lack — purpose. So of course Ana was curious. She was also a cat. Or at least, she had some cat parts. Hopefully she wasn’t so much a cat that she’d prove a certain old adage true while snooping around for whatever reason Robin had to be so stubborn. Still, Robin had offered the deal to pick her apart. She just didn’t specific how. So Ana kept on grinning, even as she added onto her earlier response.
“We have a deal!”

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Ana pulled out an impressive stack of books when all was said and done. Impressive enough that the sheer amount of books that had been in the box seemed to defy the laws of physics. Ironic considering at least three of the books in question were on physics.
“Oh! Gen told me what it was. Hang on, how did he put it?”
She paused in adding another one to the pile so that she could turn to Jun and give her roommate her very best Gen impression. Which started with the smug smirk she had learned by being a victim of quite regularly. She took a seat at the desk, propped her feet up on the edge as she leaned back in the chair, then she shook her hair out until it was messy before placing her hands behind her head with her elbows pointed out to the sides. It was a pose Gen had been in more than once in Jun and Ana’s shared dorm the last semester when being an ass.
“It’s using how hot you are for attention, Jun-chan~”
Hints of Ana’s Russian accent still came through the words, but she did a surprisingly good job of matching Gen’s mocking cadence. That more than anything else probably exposed just how much time Ana spent with Gen. Even though it wasn’t nearly enough for her. Especially considering the long break they had just taken in between semesters.
Ana dropped Gen’s mannerisms and returned to her own which still wavered between masking and not in light of Jun not wanting to share then feeding Ana breadcrumbs of reasoning to make up for it. “It must be quite a lewd image if you think I’d be bothered by seeing it! A lot of hand holding, hm?” The reference centered on a joke Jun had made to Ana before Gen had… enlightened her on certain things. Which she now weaponized to fluster Jun more.
“Or perhaps the holding of something else if it really is a thirst trap!”

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
It wasn’t often that anyone got to see Gen flustered. Even Ana. So she particularly relished when crimson crept across his face. The smirking quality of her smile returned, albeit still a softer expression than what others had to endure from either Ana or Gen at any given time.
The softness remained as Gen spoke briefly on his less-than-ideal vacation from university, though the smile diminished until it was barely perceptible across her lips when his eyes returned to her. It didn’t resurface, but she leaned into him more and huffed out in her heavy Russian accent, “Well, I suppose it’s not their fault you got all of the intelligence in the family and they couldn't see how amazing you are in the first place.”
Amazing or not, that didn’t stop Ana from shifting in response to Gen’s teasing about her being from an alien from Mars so that she could gently bite his cheek. “I’m from Fairbanks, Alaska,” she said. A phrase she often repeated. Mostly to Gen, but anyone else that mistook her for Russian or alien — even if the evidence for either or was overwhelming.
Like Gen’s before her, Ana’s eyes wandered, though in the opposite direction. She was secretive in general. He had begun to unwind the mysteries hidden beneath her caustic outward personality, but there were still some things that Ana kept close to her chest. Besides Gen himself. Her family was the primary one. She loved Mama and Papa and Marina and Dmitri! But she wasn’t supposed to talk much about them and even if she did, what was she supposed to say?
Her eyes returned to her boyfriend and she smiled wide. “Mama helped me study lots for the new semester and then I came back here to you!” Her mask had slid back into place momentarily when she had responded, but it slipped away again as she pinched the cheek opposite of the one she had nipped before. “I have to stay on the top of my field if I’m going to make things to keep you safe out there. *Shuttle*-lagged or not.”

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
If Ana was the kind of person that rolled her eyes, this is where she would have done so. “It’s just a bat!” Sure, Ana could make a really cool bat. She could make an even cooler bat that Freja was requesting. But it was just that. A bat. This one didn’t even require any actual tech components or electrical work. Which was the only reason Freja wasn’t having to sign an NDA for it. Ana could have probably literally built it in her sleep! Probably. If she could sleep walk and sleep with her eyes open or something.
“Now shoo, shoo,” Ana said after Freja finished her goodbyes. But not just to Freja. Ana also motioned for Leonid to leave. “Oh, but both of you come back in the morning! She’ll need someone to test it on!” Ana’s continued grin confirmed that the test subject would not be her.
Once they were gone, she got to work. Research on baseball bat dimensions came first. Adjustments were made based on Freja’s notes about the length and lack of weight for her preference — an issue that solved itself with the addition of a grappling hook system in its core. Which was the second round of research.
Admittedly, this took longer for Ana than the bat portion. Chain physics for maneuverability was an issue unto itself. The type of links, their proportions, material, etc. It all had a noticeable impact on how the chain functioned. Then the hook itself needed to be easily collapsible yet stable when deployed. Ana looked at so many hinge types that even her odd eyes started to feel the strain.
Perhaps she had overesti-

It was just going to be an all nighter.
Good thing there was no curfew.
