IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
It seemed like someone was always passing out fliers or posting them to walls around campus. Ana saw dozens on the daily. She had even posted a few of her own looking for new guinea pigs to put through trials and test prototypes on. That was how she had met Shana. Ana didn’t normally bother responding to any of them herself though. Until she saw one about being in a documentary.
Ana loved documentaries.
Until she had met Jun and Gen, documentaries were the only things she ever watched. Then came Ghost in the Shell and everything that happened after. Still, documentaries were Ana’s favorite. Especially science focused ones. So the chance to be in one herself was too good to pass up. The only problem was that Mama had always told Ana to limit her exposure to being recorded and documented. Then again, she was the best student in the Department of Support at UA University. At least by her own metrics. Which meant her exploits were chronicled regularly.
Was this is any different?
It was, but Ana was choosing to ignore it.
Much like how she ignored a select few of her parents’ rules by dating Gen.
She waited, albeit impatiently, for her turn in the room. The setup was more simplistic than she expected when she entered. A little wave of disappointment washed over her. Still, the chance to be in a documentary, even a basic one, didn’t come along every day! Ana took her place in front of the camera at the desk and hit the button with her trademark expression of wide eyes and an even wider smile firmly affixed across her features.
What makes you unique?
Little thought had to go into this. Quirk related things weren’t even considered. Saying your Quirk made you unique was a cop out in Ana’s mind. Everyone with a Quirk was unique and everyone without a Quirk was unique in that they didn’t have on in this day and age after a century of focused evolution of the species. So Ana went with what she often told people and what they often told her in return.
“Oh! In terms of UAU, I’m not incompetent like most everyone else here! In general, I’d say that it’s how I’m very direct!”
She had no choice in either matter due to her condition. But Ana didn’t mind. She liked how she was even if other people didn’t! And almost as important, Gen liked how she was.
What are some random, fun facts about you?
Unlike the first question, this one required more thought if only because Ana didn’t like revealing too much about herself. There was also the issue of what counted as either random or fun. Being home schooled and living in Alaska were facts she could supply, but neither were random nor fun. Her IQ being well over 200 might count, but Ana wasn’t supposed to tell people what it was exactly. There was also her obsession with fries, but that seemed too personal to share outright because of how it connected to her issues with eating. So after a few awkward seconds, she finally answered.
“I have a collection of classical music vinyls and I’m really good at drawing up nondisclosure agreements!”
What is something you want to learn or wish you were better at?
Another easy answer.
“Science! Though I am already very good at it! I just want to be better!”
Do you know any good jokes? If so, what is it?
Ana really, really, wanted to say the other students at the school, but she had, as Gen would put it, already roasted the UAU roster with her line about not being incompetent. Ana valued efficiency and part of efficiency was not being redundant. So she had to think of a different joke. She settled on one a professor had told in class the year prior.
“It’s kind of long, but here I go!
A physicist, a biologist, and a chemist were going to the ocean for the first time! The physicist saw the ocean and was fascinated by the waves! They said he wanted to do some research on the fluid dynamics of the waves and walked into the ocean! Obviously they drowned and never returned! The biologist said they wanted to do research on the flora and fauna inside the ocean and walked inside the ocean! They too never returned!
The chemist waited for a long time and afterwards, wrote the observation, “The physicist and the biologist are soluble in ocean water!”
The observation is actually false though because of how skin and fat work! Even if humans can begin to decay in water, that isn't the same as being soluble! That’s the funny part to me! Though I’ve been told that’s not why the joke is supposed to be funny!”
Have any pet peeves? If so, which comes to mind first?
It was an interesting question. One Ana might ask of people herself because it highlighted a person’s weakness. Though Ana was remarkably good at figuring those out on her own. Her eyes could see more than most people’s and in more than one way. So she lied. There was no reason for anyone to know how she hated sweets and cucumbers and being bored or how total blackouts made her feel sick. Unfortunately and unbeknownst to her, now someone would because she thought it on camera.
“No! Nothing really bothers me!”
What is your favorite place on Earth?
Anywhere Gen happened to be was the answer that first popped into her head. Like the unused classroom they had sneaked into the first week that classes had resumed so they could see each other for the first time after the break in between freshmen and sophomore year. But she couldn’t say that and not just because it was too personal by her own standards. Gen didn’t want anyone knowing about them because he didn’t want her getting hurt for being associated with him and his… unique personality. So Ana had to answer with the next best thing, which had once been home in Alaska with her family, but no longer was.
“My lab!”
She had her own personal setup in the Support Department to accommodate her unique needs. While she could work in a public space or a different lab if she had to, it caused her anxiety. Ana craved the familiarity and safety of her own space.
Who are the special people in your life?
Again, Gen was the first person to pop into Ana’s head. She contemplated the question for a moment. He didn’t want people to know they were dating for her safety, but people already knew that they were friends. So it wouldn’t be weird to include him in the list. Especially because she could include another friend.
“My friends, Gen and Jun! And Mama, Papa, Marina, and Dmitri!”
She debated adding Bear to the list, but he technically didn’t count as people.
What is something you are proud of?
There was a moment of disparity here in between Ana’s earlier statements about being competent and good at science. They were both true statements to be sure, but in her head there was a darkness. A gaping maw of despair that there was nothing to be proud about because she was the least of her siblings. A failure by comparison in [redacted] and a fact made abundantly clear by her family on a regular basis. So Ana always tried her hardest to be the best everywhere else and follow almost everything Mama had ordered her to do. Much to the annoyance of everyone else that had the misfortune of interacting with her. Especially the other students in the Support Department. Obviously Ana could say none of this, so she just smiled wider into the camera and lied.
“All of my prototypes!”
And then she left.

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Ana understood having to hide things from your parents. She hadn’t told Mama and Papa about Gen. She couldn’t even tell Marina and Dmitri in case they told on her. It wasn’t that she was worried about his safety like he was about hers at school. Mama and Papa had always told her not to actually get too close to people while assimilating. Bad for business, they had said. Bad for the family. Ana had hidden her pictures with Gen while she had been home in Alaska. She had altered her stories of school when telling them to Mama during their daily debriefs. But Jun wasn’t Mama! Ana wanted to show her the pictures and if Gen would let her tell Jun about them, then she would have. Except now…
“I’m fine!”
Her voice defaulted to its usual chipperness. The expression she wore shifted back into the smile most common to her features to match her tone. Yet her tail shrunk farther back into hiding beneath her skirt and her ears flattened lower like they were trying to disappear back beneath her hair. It was almost like she was collapsing in on herself as she put the pictures back in the box and instead began to pull out her school books while Jun explained herself. Granted, it did little to pull Ana back out of her shell.
She missed Jun fidgeting and flushing with her own back turned to arrange the times on her desk. Her ears had cocked back just enough to show she was still listening though. The meaning of Jun’s words might have been lost on Ana a year ago, but for once, the literal minded young woman actually understood the meaning beneath because she had done something very similar to Gen previously. She knew he still had the picture of her wearing a prototype suit saved to his phone too even though he had the real thing at his disposal whenever he wanted. And because of that situation, Ana also knew a particular term.
“Oh! It’s a thirst trap!”

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Ana paused mid-sketch to stare blankly at Freja after the latter gave her answer on measurements. They had stumbled upon a topic in which Ana had even less information and experience than Freja. In no universe did Ana just know the standard length of a baseball bat. That would require her to care about the sport or anyone that played it and she didn’t. But now that it was necessary for research and development, that would all change.
She shook her head in disappointment, set her pencil down, then began to rummage through another drawer while Freja burned herself on behalf of Ana. She did love efficiency. “It’s a preliminary sketch, yes!” Ana pulled free a measuring tape and moved from the table to Freja whom she began holding the measuring tape up to and checking numbers for a minute or two before stopping and returning to her schematic.
“Okay! I need to do some back end research, but I think I have all the information I need from you for now! Come back later tomorrow morning and it should be ready for you to test!”

In the first display of something beyond her grin, Ana’s nose perceptibly crinkled in response to Freja asking about ranged explosions. Fortunately for Freja, she continued on with her second idea. A more favorable idea. At least if you asked Ana. Which Freja did.
“It’s certainly better than explosions!”
Given that all the rooms as previously mentioned were laid out the same, Ana moved over to a supply cabinet and pulled out a sheet of grid paper and a pencil. “A grappling hook system is actually simple given your choice of weapon that will be encasing it,” she said as she spread the paper out over a table then began to sketch up preliminary designs. She stopped only to look up at Freja and ask a question of her.
“What is the length and weight of whatever you use now and does that feel balanced correctly for you?”

Ana’s smirk persisted, albeit a little lighter in what lurked behind its meaning. She had expected the girl to flounder spectacularly before caving into what the teacher suggested because he was the expert. The fact that she stuck with what she had originally wanted meant she had a backbone which would get her further than Ana initially expected.
That or she was stupid and just dismissed the advice of said expert.
Who knew!
But hopefully it was the former if she was going to be representing Ana as well through the gear she used. Regardless, they both had a focus now. Ana nodded.
“I’ll make one of the best bats you’ve ever seen.”
The manic energy Ana usually exuded was undercut by a far more serious tone than she had taken thus far. And then it disappeared almost immediately as she clapped her hands together again. “I have some ideas on how to do that! But is there anything in particular you’re looking for? It’s not explosions is it? Explosions are so overrated!” They were. She would stand by that. Plus, they caused collateral damage and Ana didn’t want to be on the wrong end of a lawsuit because an idiot misused gear she made.
“If not, then I will throw together a plan based on what I know about you and your situation! Since you are so simple, I recommend starting simple! I can always upgrade your gear to be more functional when you get accustomed to using it!”

I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Ana tilted her head to the side and was silent for several seconds after Jun had finished speaking. The motion was a signature sign of confusion for the young woman. “Then why bother to bring it?” Space was limited in dorm rooms and the only use a poster had in the first place was to be hung on a wall. Ana didn’t understand why Jun would bring one that she had no intention of displaying. Especially if she wasn’t going to even speak about it or show it at all.
Humans were weird.
She tapped her fingers against her stack of pictures as she listened for the answers. A secondary train of thought ran through Ana’s head as she waited. Jun was certain that Ana would show her the photos. That certainty came because they were friends. Or so Ana thought. But if Jun didn’t want to share the poster with her, did that mean Jun didn’t consider them friends? Or was it something else? Like how Gen made Ana stay quiet about them for her safety. Was Jun in danger because of a poster?
That didn’t seem right.
It had to be the friend thing.
Ana’s ears sank and her tail lowered.

Ana had been right. To the surprise of no one in her opinion. The list was very short. But at least there was a list! Leonid had also been right though. If Freja had no skill or potential at all, she wouldn’t have gotten into UAU in the first place. Still, what Ana was given to work with was basically a girl that hit things with sticks and stick adjacent things and… that was it.
Perfect!
She loved a challenge.
Of course, Leonid was correct on a second matter. There were other avenues to explore that made as much sense. It all came down to Freja’s preference because Ana had the skill to meet the demands of either route.
“Your choice is essentially to pick capitalizing on your existing strengths or begin to cover your extensive weaknesses! I have heard a saying relevant to the situation! Offense can be the best defense! Gen has described characters in games we play that fit that idea as glass cannons! However, live combat is not my area of expertise so I don’t have an opinion on which route you opt for!”

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
It was probably a good thing that Gen couldn’t see Ana’s face when he said her name. She felt heat rush to her cheeks in response. Her ears also twitched accordingly, but they were pinned beneath her hair by pins. Not for long though. Ana reached up to free her ears from their confines. At least for the time being in the privacy of the abandoned room. They popped out from beneath the veil of her dark tresses and wiggled as proper feeling came back to them.
She pocketed the pins within her uniform blazer then rested her hands on Gen’s arms where they were wrapped around her. “I can tell,” she responded before rubbing the side of her cheek against his head. Then she let silence underscored by the hum of her quiet purring take the two of them for several moments as she simply enjoyed his presence.
Eventually though, Ana’s almost constant need for stimulus overtook her and stillness turned to fidgeting that turned to Ana popping her Quirk to free her of Gen’s hold. Only for her then to turn around, solid once more so that she could plant a kiss on his lips with her hands on either side of his face.
“We don’t have a lot of time before the lunch break is over.” She sounded sad when she spoke after pulling away a fraction, but she still smiled up at him in a far less manic way than normal. “How are you? How was break? Tell me everything.”

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Unblinking. Unmoving. Ever-smiling.
Ana watched the proceedings play out in what seemed to be an uneventful manner when Kei took to the podium. It was all so… expected. He was nice. A total antithesis to Ana herself and the way she had approached the new student base. What wasn’t expected was how one responded by directly calling him out. It was then that Ana first moved, if only slightly. Her head tilted to the side and her eyes focused specifically on the speaker where they remained even as Kei addressed the student in return.
She moved a second time, now walking toward the podium as Kei finished speaking. It seemed Ana had something to add. Alas, she was momentarily stopped by another one of the sophomores. There was a brief debate in her mind about continuing forward. Bongo could take a knee to the face and Ana could claim she didn’t see or hear him from so far below eye and ear level, but that wasn’t the scene she wanted to cause. There was another in mind. She had to rid herself of the annoyance first though.
“Quantity will never replace quality, Bongo. Especially when the quality of said quantity is questionable at best. Even someone as lacking in intellect as they are in height such as you should be able to see that. And if not, my skills, creations, and grades speak for themselves.”
There was no space left for a retort directly to Ana’s face as she stepped past the original Bongo only to snatch up Gamma and the mic he had taken from Kei in one swift movement after the clone’s own speech had concluded, using the shorter student as a makeshift mic stand. Her eerie eyes and accent heavy voice were directed solely to Zahra even with other students entering late with muted entrances. Someone else could address this if they wanted. Ana had to contend with the fact that Kei had let a freshman make him look foolish and by association, the sophomore class to which Ana also belonged. It was simply unacceptable.
“While the rest of you process this one’s-” Ana paused to shake Gamma. “-attempt at being motivating, allow me to clarify further for the one in the crowd that spoke up, since where Kei seems to have been truly incorrect was in overestimating your ability to understand something simple.”
Zahra had misunderstood what Kei meant, after all. Anyone could see that — Even someone as literal minded as Ana. And now Zahra was backtracking to make Kei out to be the fool instead. Granted, he was a fool if he was getting played by something and someone so simple.
“You are all equal as freshmen in that your potential has not been proven to those of us on the other side of the freshmen threshold beyond the ability to pass the entrance exams into UAU. While a prestigious school, many do that regularly. You are not special in that accomplishment by direct comparison to those around you.”
There was a pause here as Ana’s grin widened. She had left little to no room for misinterpretation because she at a baseline didn’t believe in anyone’s ability to understand more than the most simple and direct words. Which is why she was as blunt as humanly possible as she continued to the point behind her stepping up.
“You, however, have proven something more than that here today. You have proven that you have less sense than most every other freshmen in the audience today.” Ana stopped here to point at one of the new arrivals that was busy hitting their chair. “Except perhaps them and whatever they’re doing right now. Can you not? Regardless, everyone else that was here when he spoke understood what Kei said and if they did not, then they at least didn’t open their mouths to make a fool of themselves with misinformed accusations rather than inquiries for clarification as a scientist should. I would say that seems to currently place you firmly in the running for the bottom of your class. At least you won’t have as far to fall should you fail to keep up with the curriculum here.”

“You’re a bad liar!”
Ana didn’t have enough tact to follow in Jun’s footsteps and just nod along to help Jun keep her false narrative in place like Jun had done for her. Was Ana even aware that Jun didn’t believe her own earlier lies? Who knew!
Alas, ears and tails weren’t the only cat adjacent attributes that Ana. Curiosity was there in spades as well. Fortunately her forays into indulging it had yet to get her killed as the old adage went. One that Ana was wholly unaware of personally. What Ana was aware of, however, was that Jun was holding out on her and the best way to get information was to give information.
“I’ll show you my pictures if you tell me what you’re hiding about your poster!”
It was a bad deal. Ana was already going to put her pictures up, but Jun didn’t know that. For all Jun knew, Ana was going to hide them away in her desk like she did with her notebook full of unintelligible notes and schematics only she could read. She was a particularly secretive individual after all. And if Jun did realize how short the end of straw she drew was in the deal? Well, that’s what bargaining was for!

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Ana was smart enough to know it was likely she was not alone because that was just how Gen was. He had a flair for the dramatic and liked to make an entrance whenever he could. But knowing something was very different from being prepared for something.
She flinched at the sudden contact, the motion kickstarting her heart into overdrive, but surprise came more so from the veil of darkness that descended alongside it. Considering that Ana could see in the dark, the only time her sight was ever normally taken from her was when she closed her eyes. Which she didn’t do very often outside of sleeping. After all, cats could go hours without blinking and so could Ana — much to the discomfort of others.
The flinch and tension that came with it melted away. So too did Ana as she leaned back into the boy behind her. She would recognize his touch and voice anywhere and that realization did nothing to slow her heart beat down. Quite the opposite.
“Hi, Genichirou,” Ana purred. Literally in fact as a quiet rumble followed up her greeting thick with both her Russian accent and emotion. Two of the three audible traits were things no one else had ever heard from her. Not even her family. At least not since she had been very little when such things were still acceptable in the eyes of her parents.
Her tail unwound from her right leg where it had been hiding beneath the skirt of her uniform and the short lab coat she wore over it. It wrapped around Gen’s leg in turn as she sank even further into him. All of her earlier anxiety over the secrecy was dispelled for the time being in wake of the relief that came from being near him again. Which was a concept wholly foreign to quite literally everyone else when it came to Gen. It was one of the many ways in which Ana was not normal, but normal was overrated anyway.
“I missed you!”

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Leonid’s annoyance was not the only thing kindled by Freja’s doubt. Ana took a step toward the other young woman after the Hero had addressed her. Though the shortest of the trio, Ana was still taller than average and her single long-legged stride stripped a decent amount of distance that had been between them previously.
“Lucky for you, I believe in my capability more than you believe in yours!”
Another step forward.
“Because you better not be doubting mine!”
Confidence and ambition in her own field were not something that Ana lacked. To the point where she fully believed she could bridge Freja’s deficiency gaps — even without knowing the full extent of said deficiencies beyond being Quirkless. Irritated though Ana was that her skill might have been called into question by Freja, whether intentionally or not, her enthusiasm still ran high. This project had the chance to be her collegiate magnum opus and should Freja truly prove lacking to keep up with the physical demands due to the meagerness of mortal limitations, Ana could always replace her piece by piece with cybernetics until nothing human remained.
Now wouldn’t that be something? :)
Ana looked back and forth between the two. Leonid was not spared from her obvious evaluations. If anything her interest was just as keen as that designated to Freja. Perhaps it had something to do with the feline ears and tail hidden beneath Ana's hair and clothing. The task at hand was sufficient enough to keep from probing the Panthera leo with questions about his Quirk and anatomy though. Her unsettling gaze returned fully upon Freja after only a few seconds.
“I’ll need a baseline to inform where we should start! So what are you good at now? I suspect it is a short list so I shouldn’t need to take notes, but correct me if I’m wrong!”
Was she though?

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
“You do seem to like laws!”
There was a slight emphasis on the way that Ana said the word ‘do’ in response to Jun’s alternate life goals. The subtle lilt would likely be undetectable to someone less familiar with Ana’s mannerisms. Jun, unfortunately for her, had enough experience to interpret the change as Ana disagreeing with the core concept of laws in general, but she didn’t voice her reasoning in a long winded and likely insulting tangent. There were more important things to be done as soon as Jun closed the door.
The click that announced their privacy initiated the transformation. Well. Less transformation and more revelation. Ana’s sleek black tail unwound itself from her right leg to poke out beneath the hem of her skirt which it curled up around, though not enough to actually lift the skirt. Meanwhile, Ana had set her pictures face down on the desk so her hands could attend to the other concealment in place. A few deft movements later and the bobby pins holding her feline ears down beneath her hair were released, causing her ears to pop out and up. Ana grinned at Jun and her ears twitched as they happily enjoyed their freedom.
“Much better!”
But soon enough her hands returned to the pictures Jun had asked about as did her eyes. Her smile softened. “Not memories from break! Before break! I was in Alaska! I couldn’t see Gen! For experiments of course! Which these are just evidence of!” They weren't. They were of moments Ana wanted to remember that didn't have official documentation about research. The almost imperceptible higher pitch her voice took on backed that up whether she wanted it to or not. Especially because she was getting into her own head.
Did he miss her as much as she missed him? Probably not. She wasn’t him. But Ana could handle being second place to Gen in his own heart and head as long as no one else was being considered for her current position due to their silence over their secret relationship. But it wouldn’t stay secret if Jun kept prying into it, so Ana had to distract her.
“Is that a new mecha poster?”

IT'S ME! HI!
I'M THE PROBLEM! IT'S ME!
Ana remained motionless and wordless throughout the retort. Much like a predator lying in wait for hapless prey. This prey did not seem so hapless at first glance. Venom and verbal thrashing issued in self-defense.
Or death throes.
The sophomore’s eyes almost seemed to glow even in the well lit room. Perhaps it was her Quirk seeping out unchecked. A flight or fight response to subconsciously perceived threats. Implausible, but not impossible. More likely, however, it was just a side effect of Ana’s mounting amusement as the other student spoke and once Robin did stop, there was a pause as Ana cocked her head to one side almost like she was waiting for her to continue and when she did not, Ana righted her head, grin wider than ever before and eyes equally as bright.
“But you are in an enclosed space!”
Out of Robin’s entire rant, her comment about being around acid was what Ana zeroed in on. Picking out flaws was habit. Innate, even. It was part of what made Ana so good at what she did and one of the reasons people disliked her so much.
“And if you can't keep your own living quarters clean enough to perform basic weapon maintenance there without mistakes and mess being an issue or learn to open a window for ventilation or-” Ana paused here as she stepped over to a wall with a variety of switches. One of which she flipped causing the vents in the room to turn on. “-learn to utilize the ventilation system in the labs properly to back up your own claims over having a right to use them, then yes, you do absolutely require supervision to be here because you're clearly either an idiot or staggeringly unskilled!”
Ana moved back to her original spot. Her eyes never left Robin. They never blinked either.
“I could supervise you though, yes! You could remain and do your trivial work in a place more suited to it for today instead of being escorted out by a professor or worse! The question is, what would I get out of it?”
