THE WATCHER
FOREVER IS COMPOSED OF NOWS
The silent acquiescence to their equally unspoken request led to Morgana squatting down next to the body. They retrieved a pair of latex gloves from their overcoat, which was still damp from the downpour outside. A peal of thunder confirmed its continued wrath beyond the estate’s walls. A few of the guests flinched, but Morgana was steadfast even as they reached toward the corpse to begin examining it while Iphi continued her interrogation of the living.
“Thanks,” Midori murmured quietly in response to Iphi’s declaration. He looked over at Kin again, then to the body, and then to the floor. The butler’s gaze almost seemed to move in reverse of that order. He had been looking at the floor when Iphi approached, then to the body when she asked her question, then cast a glance over to Midori and Kin before answering and shifting his eyes to Iphi herself to give his answer.
“Kujaku-san is… was, what some might refer to as a night owl. He had only been awake for approximately two hours before your arrival. Time that was spent preparing for the party, which was expected to extend until late tonight with dinner and entertainment planned. As for order of arrival, the younger Kujaku-san has been here for a fortnight to visit with his late uncle. Kaname-san arrived several hours prior to see the former. The rest of the guest began to arrive half an hour ago. First Fujiwara-san, then Rao-san, and Enatsu-san was the final to show.”
Morgana had risen back to their full height by the time the summary was concluded. They allowed a few seconds for the words to be processed, at least by themselves as unbeknownst to them, Iphi required only a fraction of that time. Then they quietly interjected.
“Recall. A word?”

“You hunted me down for… pie?”
The question hung in between the pair before Morgana laughed. “Man, you either really love pie or you have an issue with people keeping promises.” They didn’t move to stop him from taking the newspaper. Even if Morgana’s hands hadn’t been busy wiping away the little beads of tears from amusement at the corner of their eyes, they would have let Mark take it without a fuss—unless they had known what his Quirk was. Which they didn't, because he claimed not to have one.
Morgana wouldn’t have stopped Mark to keep their own privacy intact. They would have stopped him because they didn’t know how a Quirk that could see through time would interact with their own Quirk. Especially considering the impending side effects of The Watcher on… The Watcher.
It’s night. The air is balmy with a humidity that persists even without a threat of rain. Car models from decades past whiz up and down a main thoroughfare outside a college campus. It’s not UAU or any other university in Japan. The signs in English mark it as UC Berkeley.
Morgana walks away from a car that just dropped them off. The same bag sitting next to them back in the cafe hangs from their shoulder. They dig in it for their phone. The distraction makes them miss the masked figure that lunges at them from the shadows wielding a knife. Panic courses through Morgana.
“Give me the bag!”
“Take it! Take it,” Morgana cries and shoves the bag toward them. The top of the bag is open. Everything falls to the ground. Including their phone. It lands on the concrete of the sidewalk with a sharp retort that startles the mugger. Now they panic, wondering if Morgana has just done something with one of those new Quirks that have started appearing. Or perhaps someone was running to their aid.
Spooked, the mugger drives the knife into Morgana’s chest. The last thing Morgana sees is their attacker pulling the knife out, dropping it, and fleeing from the scene before they hit the ground and are overtaken by darkness. It’s a void of nothingness. Nothingness and pain and Morgana and strands of time unraveling their own history around them like a silent movie. They drift endlessly among the memories and a moment of suffering that stretches for an eternity. Sounds permeate the space in distant peals of thunder carrying sirens and screams and voices. Then it goes quiet and a light appears at the far end of the tunnel. Morgana’s consciousness drifts towards the light until…
They are back in the present.

Their body offered no resistance to being herded away from the open space and toward the confines of an alley. It was almost like leading a sleepwalker away from the dangers of their own wanderings. Except Morgana was being moved away from one hazard and directly into another.
“Huh?”
Morgana finally snapped back to the present amid the mad dash away from the flying fiend. Topaz gaze darted around, taking in the mouth of the shadowy backstreet they were being tugged toward, the woman tugging them, and the fish monster overhead. Reality began to click back into place with a sense of urgency—Morgana might survive, or die to then revive from, an attack by a mutated sea creature, but the person leading them (as far as they knew) wouldn’t be so lucky.
“Don’t worry about me,” Morgana said, woefully misinterpreting why they had been led to some semblance of cover. Hastily made assumptions had been their downfall more than once. “You need to get out of here though before that thing attacks.”

“I’m working,” Morgana said from behind the newspaper they were pretending to read. The very newspaper that had the article about Lone Wolf printed in it. “But I’m guessing you knew that if you found me here.” They lowered the newspaper to look at Mark pointedly in the way investigators do before adding, “Unless you were lying about being Quirkless and you can actually track people down via a Quirk.” Then they laughed.
“Kidding. Bossman gave me a heads up that some cranky fellow was heading my way. Figured it was you. Still, I didn’t think that the article I wrote painted you in such a bad light that you’d hound me about a retraction. Not really my policy to print one when I have consent and audio proof though, so sorry about your luck.”
Morgana hadn’t forgotten about the pie that motivated the Hero to track them down. They were incapable of forgetting. Even when they wanted to and there was certainly plenty more things besides skipping out on a promise of dessert that Morgana would have gladly forgotten. As it were, they simply didn’t think the pie was as big of a deal as the news article now staring up at the both of them from the pages spread on the table next to Morgana’s coffee.

FOREVER IS COMPOSED OF NOWS
The initial insistence that this stranger was fine amid a war waged by watery wildlife wasn’t technically a red flag for Morgana. Perhaps they had stumbled upon a Hero doing patrols and misjudged her based on almost childish appearances alone. Morgana of all people should have known better, but something wasn’t sitting right in their mind. Their investigative instincts and long history at the fringes of conflict were throwing up warnings. The little imp’s second claim did nothing to dismiss Morgana’s suspicions. Nor did the evaluating look she was currently giving Morgana.
Time spiraled around Morgana. The present moment came undone in thousands of strings that formed the tapestry of her timeline. One in particular began to glow with the intensity of the sun. A strand that connected two periods of Morgana’s personal chronography. The very first time Morgana had died was during a mugging gone wrong. Similarities flagged themselves in keenly remembered seconds that Morgana was submerged in.
On the outside, Morgana was unmoving. A statue frozen in place as their past played out in their mind unseen by anyone else. They were completely vulnerable to this thief of opportunity—and to the things that lurked in the backdrop of the ocean beyond the street.

“He’s my uncle,” Midori replied then frowned and added, “Was. He was my uncle.” His frown persisted though he was dry eyed. Kin placed a hand on his arm in what appeared to be a comforting gesture. Morgana took it in but didn’t allow their eyes to solely rest on the man that had drawn Iphi’s focus for the time being. Questioning one individual might make the others drop their guard if they thought they weren’t being observed as closely.
Akane fidgeted with her jewelry, her eyes averted from the body. Her discomfort at being in the same room with a corpse was obvious. But was it guilt or genuine squeamishness? Yuki was still stoic, her face giving away nothing as she observed Midori answering. Dhumra had taken a seat away from the body, his head bent and eyes closed though his lips moved silently as if he might be uttering a prayer. The butler was still standing at attention by the door, awaiting orders from his master that would never come.
Morgana looked to Kujaku-san after making their visual rounds on the others. Their eyebrows furrowed slightly and a frown turned their lips down to almost mirror Midori’s. They took a couple of steps toward the body before looking back at Iphi, non-verbally asking for permission to inspect the corpse while she continued questioning the guests.

THE WATCHER
FOREVER IS COMPOSED OF NOWS
Most people ran away from danger.
Most people also weren’t immortal.
Morgana wasn’t most people.
They had packed up their field gear within their trusty tactical bag once they had heard reports of monster attacks coming in over the scanners at the Sentinel Independent Press newspaper station. The editor popped his head out of his office. “Aha! I knew you’d be headed off to chase fish. You’re terrible at staying put!”
“Kinda my job, boss.” “Oh. Right. Well. Don’t get eaten!”
Morgana didn’t bother to say that even if they did get eaten, they’d still be at work on time tomorrow morning. Probably. Unless they got stuck in the literal belly of the beast in a cycle of death and rebirth.
It wouldn’t be the first time.
The Hyundai Grandeur, at least, had lived to see another day. It sputtered its way into a parking spot at an otherwise abandoned lot. Everyone else with common sense and a natural lifespan had driven off as far away from the shoreline as possible already. Morgana continued to do the opposite by sliding out of the car, bag draped over their shoulder and an old school film camera in hand.
They expected to see mutated animals laying waste to beach-side attractions. There was certainly evidence of such, but the sand and sea beyond the street where Morgana stood were deceptively placid for the time being. Morgana’s attention shifted across the horizon until they settled on something out of place amidst the desolation—a person. Much like themselves, only they were preoccupied with a wallet while Morgana was busy bringing the camera up and snapping a picture of them before calling out, “Hey! You probably shouldn’t be here. It’s not safe.”

SENTINEL INDEPENDENT PRESS
THE INVESTIGATIVE INTEGRITY YOU DESERVE IN THE NEWS YOU NEED
Age in this Day and Age By Morgana Moriarty
Respect has long since been an integral part of Japan’s culture as a more collectivist than individualistic society. It should come as no surprise then, that there is an entire day centered on showing respect to older generations. Keiro no Hi isn’t like other holidays in that it is much less festival oriented. The focus is more on visiting with older family members and volunteering at places like retirement homes, though there are some more energetic activities and showcases both for and by the elderly. The question, however, is what is defined as elderly in a world that, much like its inhabitants in the last fifty years, has been evolving rapidly?
The term senior once defined this stage of life as sixty-five or older, but if one looked even deeper into the past, it’s easy to see that life-expectancy was once far shorter. A person in their fifties would be considered a senior in the 1700s. The bar has slowly, but surely, moved up as generations pass and both medical industries and societies advance. Until now.
Meta abilities, or Quirks as they are more colloquially referred to, are a deep subject unto themselves worthy of a library's worth of articles all on their own. For the purpose of this article, however, there is no denying their impact on the increase in both violent crime and the force of which perpetrators are dealt with in the field that causes casualties among participants and bystanders alike. The myriad of other societal issues and implications aside, statistics are already showing a trend with a life expectancy dip typically only seen in modern times during periods of war, famine, or disease. Perhaps it is no surprise given the frequency of tragic events headlining the news week after week, such as with the recent passing of a UAU student during a prefecture-wide attack on Tokyo.
The difference in this dip versus those caused by the aforementioned source, is that Quirks do not appear to be going anywhere. More and more people are born everyday with the gene that causes meta abilities to manifest. The population of those with Quirks has outpaced those without and will likely continue to do so according to researchers in the relevant fields. With that being the case, Sentinel Independent Press turned to another kind of expert for advice to any looking into entering a field most at risk for a lowered life expectancy—Heroics.
Lone Wolf, a Pro Hero and faculty at UAU, has a viewpoint one might find odd given his career choice. When asked what his secret of success so far was, he responded, “Suppose I should come out and say this, but I don't have a Quirk. That's part of the reason why I'm alive and well today.” Again, startling to hear from a Hero, but inspiring for Quirkless individuals that are interested in Heroics.
The Pro Hero offered more insight on why being Quirkless is such a boon from his perspective, starting with, “As you can see, I don't wear any kind of major uniform. I blend in with your average person.” He then added, “If you're a bad guy, what's the bigger threat to you? Is it the police cruisers and cyclists that patrol the streets, that barricade the bank once you take hostages? Is it the gal in the flamboyant outfit that with the waggle of a finger can call down the power of God to smite anything or anyone in her way? Or is it that unassuming guy on the street corner with a scarf and a bad attitude? People, by nature, are stupid. And that's something you can quote me on. But fact of the matter is, people only see what they want to see. I don't gallivant in a flashy costume. I can't lift cars with my bare hands, leap over the tops of skyscrapers in a single leap, or shoot laser beams from my eyes. Anyone that presents themselves capable of doing something like that paint a target on their backs. Hell, even if a Hero is in civilian clothes and gets into a scrap, using their quirk immediately paints them as a threat.”
While his advice there might be more relevant to those already in the field, Lone Wolf did address issues about UAU students specifically. Including the situation regarding the death of one Mei Lien. “Multiple students were involved in that incident, along with many others that transpired that day. While I am proud that many of them stepped up to the plate, it was stupid of them to do what they did, lotta them got hurt.” It’s clear that while Lone Wolf is often harsh in his words, his criticisms come from a place of concern and his goal as a teacher is to truly prepare the future Heroes for what they will inevitably face—the same things he already faces, and survives, himself. In such a case, perhaps it is best to not be gentle. A sentiment he makes clear.
“Lotta stupid kids go to take the exam. Most manage to get it. At least, was the case with me. Barely graduated high school, and I found myself more knowledgeable than some of the proctors. I don't try to cull numbers for some noble cause. There is a second of Ground Beta that is lovingly referred to as, 'No Man's Land' because I've set it up closer to a war zone. Whenever people see heroes on the news, on the side of cereal boxes, their faces plastered on ads, you know they're fake. Manufactured. When the rubber meets the road, they're the first ones to burn out 'cause they've never had to hold in someone else's guts. Kids don't understand what real heroism is. The ones that do either get out of the business immediately, or are the ones put in the pinewood box. And anyone crazy enough to stay lose a few screws in exchange for knowledge and experience."
It’s a heavy take, but fitting for a heavy situation. Taking the time to parse through his thoughts yields valuable insight into both the man and Heroics. Heroes and their industry have been popularized through the media so intensely that it’s seemingly often more about showmanship than saving people from dire situations. The potential glory has become a glamorous lure that often makes people, the young-bordering-on-elderly now especially, forget the dangers and what is truly on the line—everyone’s lives. When asked for his final words on the topic, Lone Wolf added more to his previous stance in a way that also highlights the aforementioned issue.
“Kids should stop pretending. If this were a game or movie, announcing your presence, striking a heroic pose, and naming all your moves would be really cool. But the sad reality of it? It just looks corny. Maximum Overload, Shinigami's Gaze, Yamato's Revenge! I'm sorry, but kids these days don't know how to name things properly. It's goofy. If they're gonna put a name on something, it's gotta be simple! Like 'Joe'. What the hell does that mean? It would throw people off, giving the heroes that edge they need. If you just robbed a bank, ran down an alley, and heard somewhere above you, 'Shapoopi!', would you or would you not stop and try to process what that was? It'd make me stop in my tracks. I dunno, but if I hear one more 'Deathbeam' in one of my classes, I'm gonna have to take drastic steps: having a surprise lecture where no one can get out as they are forced to watch an old 2000s sitcom that isn't even funny.”

FOREVER IS COMPOSED OF NOWS
Morgana was silent as Iphi took control and command of the situation. Silent, but not inactive. Their eyes shifted from each person in a methodical manner worthy of their dual job titles. The first was a busty red-head that would have had Morgana’s attention even if she wasn’t currently a suspect in a now open murder investigation of which she looked ill at being involved in. The other woman was far older. Perhaps even older than Morgana themselves, only she looked her age. She retained a stoic demeanor in spite of the situation compared to the younger women.
The men, sans butler, while of far less interest to Morgana than the woman in red on a personal level with the exception of the purple-haired person in foreign clothing, were evaluated with no less scrutiny. The blond in the dark suit busied himself whispering into the ear of the final man that drew Morgana’s attention for the similarities he bore to the dead body on the floor. Almost as if related in some manner. Which brought them to the first inquiry, though it wasn’t framed as a question.
“Perhaps we should start with introductions. Some names for faces. I’m Morgana Moriarty. This lovely lady here is Recall. She’s in charge as stated earlier. So let’s all play nice. Starting with you.”
Morgana pointed at the red-head. They weren’t biased, really. If they were, Morgana might have also asked for her number. That still might happen, but only if she was cleared of, you know, being a killer.
“Oh! Me? I’m Akane. Enatsu Akane.”
“Nice to meet you, Akane-san.”
And it was. For now. After that introduction was done, Morgana went around the room. The older woman introduced herself as Fujiwara Yuki. The man with purple hair was Dhumra Rao. His eyes lingered on Morgana almost as much as theirs had been on Akane. The man who whispered his way through Morgana's introduction announced himself to be Kaname Kin and the man he had been whispering to was Kujaku Midori. The very same surname as the murdered host for the evening.

“So the key to survival and a longer life is saying off the wall stuff?”
Morgana thought about it for a few seconds before shrugging. “Well, you’re the expert here.” How many times had Morgana died already? Maybe they would try saying the stupidest thing they could think of next time. They hoped there wouldn’t even be a next time, but live as long as they did in a world like theirs, not to mention with their profession, there was always a next time.
“I think I need a smoke and a stronger drink.”
They lifted their bag up and shouldered it once more. “Meal is paid for as promised. Thanks for the interview, old man. It’ll be in the Sunday edition of the Sentinel Independent Press if you want to check it out.” Then they waved and walked away.
Without getting Mark his pie.

Morgana wasn’t as familiar with Japanese law as they were with American law, but the decision was obvious. Still, Iphi had gone ahead and said the quiet part out loud just in case. “So it goes,” Morgana said. The literary quote came with a nod of agreement and Morgana positioning themselves behind Iphi to proceed down the hall and toward an open door from which the scream had seemed to emanate and from which frantic voices now spilled.
The difference in their height, sleight though it was, gave Morgana enough of a vantage point to see around Iphi. Which means they got an eyeful of fresh corpse on the floor. Kujaku-san’s corpse specifically. The man was sprawled face down on a clearly expensive Persian rug spread over the dark hardwood floor.
A gaggle of six people surrounded him. They were clearly the dinner guests for the evening. Two women and four men. The latter number also included the butler who was attempting to dial an old school landline phone. “The line is dead. Does someone have a cell phone to phone the authorities?” Adachi looked at Iphi upon saying this, his expression clearly strained, and amended, “The other authorities.”

Morgana would have been worried had he denied the absence of a few screws. More worried, that is. The truly crazy ones never saw their own issues.
They didn’t respond for a few moments. Time lapsed as they poked at their food. Their appetite had been subdued by the weight of the conversation more than what they had consumed. Then they sighed, dropped their fork, and stretched their arms up over their head to release some of the tension.
“Heavy stuff.”
There was no elaboration. Their entire conversation had baggage decades in the making for the new world order. Even someone half a century younger than Morgana could see that without them holding their hand and leading them to the point.
“Any final words to get in for the interview? Maybe something I didn’t ask that you think is relevant. Or even just something you want the world to know whether it has something to do with the life span topic or not.”

THE WATCHER
FOREVER IS COMPOSED OF NOWS
In any other universe, hearing a twenty-something speaking as a grizzled war veteran with the weight of a lifetime of war behind them would have been absurd. But they weren’t sharing a meal over such a macabre subject in another universe. For them, it was quite literally an ordinary day with an ordinary discussion.
An ache lanced through the apathy draped across Morgana’s heart. The way the world turned closer to darkness and farther from light was something they had once fought so hard against. Now they just reported on it. Even a small act such as that fed the ember of their old self. An old self kept alive by the hopes that the articles they wrote would inspire a new generation to pick up where they had left off decades ago. Maybe someday, someone would fix the things they hadn’t been able to fix themselves. But today was just that. Today. Not a hypothetical someday.
“Born and raised in Cali,” Morgana confirmed. They name dropped the state in question as a reminder about the jabs Mark had taken earlier, though there was no ill will in their voice. If anything, they just sounded tired. Being seventy-five in what felt like a slow burn apocalypse did that to a person. Speaking of which.
“So how many screws are you missing then?”

THE WATCHER
FOREVER IS COMPOSED OF NOWS
“Interesting,” Morgana replied in between sips of their coffee. And it was. If only because it proved their point in a roundabout way.
“I’m not saying you’re wrong for seemingly being proactive in using your position to cause students to quit or rethink their choice. It’s not a career one should get into lightly. No first responder position is.”
They took a bite of their meal before continuing. Partly to let the man consider what they were actually about to say, but mostly because they were well and truly hungry and the food wasn’t bad for what was essentially a glorified cafeteria with bistro price tags. Good thing they could write off the expense.
“But don’t you think it’s a little telling that part of your job that isn’t in your description, meaning you’ve chosen to take it on, is keeping people away from it? If they aren’t cut out for it, then they’re not only likely to get themselves killed, but other people too.”
Morgana pointed their fork at Mark. “Not every single future Hero from this school, much less Japan, passes through you though and not every country is quite as thorough with their training protocols. Did you know some train high schoolers for the job then let them be Pros upon graduating? Children that aren’t even old enough to drink in most countries patrol the streets fighting Villains. Needless to say, these reasons, among many others, are contributing to the decrease in average lifespans for the populace after years of perpetual increases thanks to advances in medicine.” They took a breath. Proving their earlier point had accidentally turned into a tirade that mirrored the passion they had once had in their youth.
“Sorry. Didn’t mean to rant. Must be the caffeine kicking in.”
That didn’t stop them from taking another drink.
