“Yeah, that’s not ominous or anything,” Morgana muttered as they pulled up to an imposing mansion set against the darkened backdrop of a late evening summer storm.



They killed the engine of the Grandeur and took one last drag of their cigarette while studying the structure before them. The whole setting looked like something out of a horror movie. Eh. What’s the worst that could happen? There were plenty of terrible answers to that question, but come midnight, none of it would matter to Morgana anyway. Technically. And only on a physical level. So they tamped out the cigarette in a nearly flowing ashtray, grabbed their umbrella and bag from the passenger seat, and slid out of the car to make their way to the front entrance.

Lines of visualized time and space flowed around their path. Moments that lead up to Morgana’s arrival played out in their peripheral. They squeezed their eyes closed for a moment to lessen the stimulus and mentally ready themselves for the task at hand—following up on a lead in a case kicked to them from the private sector. A trail of burned buildings and fixed books that hinted at insurance fraud and embezzlement from a tech company specializing in support gear for Heroes ended at the door Morgana now knocked upon.

Time passed to the tune of several heartbeats before the door opened. Someone whom Morgana assumed was the butler, because places like this always had a butler, stood on the other side. “Good evening. Are you one of the invitees for the master’s dinner party this evening?” Morgana’s two options were to tell the truth or lie, but considering there was probably a memorized guest list tumbling around the butler’s mind, they opted for the former.

“Unfortunately not. Wouldn’t turn down a good dinner invite, but I’m Morgana Moriarty. I’m here with Nazar P.I. looking into a case. I was hoping I could get a word in with Kujaku-san. He’s the… homeowner of this estate, if I’m not mistaken.”

Given the fleeting expression of concern across the butler’s face, Morgana wasn’t mistaken. Which was good, because digging up that kind of info was Investigation 101. They wouldn’t have been much of a journalist or private detective if they failed at that.

“I see. You will have to wait here while I confer with the master. I apologize for the inconvenience.”

“Wait. What? In the r-”

The door closed before Morgana could finish voicing their complaint.

“Sheesh, rude much? This blows.”

If you had asked Iphi whether she preferred to work alone or with others she would also opt for the latter. Ouros had been picking up steam quickly and had their staff nearly tripled in the last few months. It was fantastic for business, but it did mean that everyone individually was taking up jobs on their own instead of moving as a unit. This, mainly due to the volume of work, was great for rebuilding their organization's name, but it did mean that for assignments like this, Iphi was running solo.

Arriving in her car an ominous estate lay before her. She wasn't sure if it was the location itself or perhaps because it happened to be downpouring that added to the creepy factor. Still, with her atypical brain this was nothing more than a footnote in the grand scheme of things rather than a fearful or apprehensive emotional response. If Sadako was here she would have loved the aesthetic of this place while also being absolutely terrified. Her fascination with horror movies combined with her skittishness never failed to make Iphi smile.

Stepping out of her vehicle she would unfurl her umbrella, being careful to avoid and puddles of water as she walked up to the door. She had chosen this day to formally question the owner of the estate due to party that was occurring at the same time. Not only would he let his guard down if intoxicated it also guaranteed he would be at the place at the time. She arrived just in time to see the door being closed in Morgana's face, and unaware of her affiliation, she spoke up, "Here for the party? Please don't mind me, I'm here to see Kujaku-san." She took out her hero and detective licenses "Recall. With Ouros investigation and hero agency."

The sound of another vehicle pulling up to the premise drew Morgana’s attention away from the butler and the sky quite literally raining on their proverbial parade. It seemed when one door closed, another really did open. Of course, that door was immediately closed as well before the new arrival made their way to the entrance alongside Morgana. Whatever assumptions Morgana had about them being a party-goer were immediately dispelled by the presentation of official documents.

“Nope. Here on business with Kujaku-san myself. Judging by your fancy papers, it’s a similar kind of business.” Morgana offered out their hand that wasn’t otherwise occupied with their own umbrella for a more traditionally American greeting. “Nice to meet you though, Recall. I’m Morgana Moriarty. I’m following up some leads with Nazur P.I. though my day job is with Sentinel Independent Press. The butler is checking in with-”

Before Morgana could explain the current state of affairs, the door abruptly flew open. “Really, Adachi-san. Leaving our guest out in the storm. Shameful.” The voice came from a flamboyant man glaring over his shoulder at the butler that Morgana now knew as Adachi instead of just butler. Progress.

Kujaku-san whipped his head around to face the two awaiting detectives.

“Adachi-san! You said there was only one! Why are there two? No matter. Let’s get on with this.” He gave each of them an obvious and exceptionally judgemental once-over before directing his attention solely to Iphi. “You’re the prettier one. You get to talk. What do you want? Answer quickly and I’ll let you inside and out of the rain.”

Yeah, that’s about right, Morgana thought. Average was what they did best. It came in handy quite often. This just wasn’t one of those times.

Iphi was genuinely surprised that this other person was here for the same purpose as her. With a quick scan of her mental vault and she was sure they'd never met before otherwise she would have wondered if it truly was a coincidence. Regardless, she was always polite to anyone who treated her the same: "It's a pleasure to meet you, Morgana." she would return her handshake in kind, internally noting how rare it was to be greeted using Western customs rather than Eastern. The two organizations, Nazur P.Sentinel Independent Press were familiar names from early in her detective career. Before Ouros became independent, Iphi had done some freelancing and worked with someone from Nazur P.I "Oh! If you're affiliated with Nazur, you must know Hideki-san" Hideki was a senior employee working for Nazur long before Iphi even graduated from UAU.

She wanted to continue their conversation and would have if not for the timely interjection by their collective target. Of course she had researched the potential illicit activities, but she didn't realize that Kujaku was a bit insufferable. Perhaps if she was more vain she would have enjoyed the praise when he commented on her looks. She wasn't impressed and was rather annoyed by the callous disregard of Morgana but would remain neutral in her approach. She was intruding on him, after all.

"Evening. I'm sorry to intrude my name is Iphigenia Pavlina or Recall." she'd show her hero license "I wanted to ask you a few questions about Okurobo Technical industries. Public record shows that you have a large investment in that support company." she was direct that was for sure. "I apologize for the intrusion on the night of a dinner party you're hosting; you are remarkably difficult to contact." The pitter-patter of the rain on her umbrella increased as the rain picked up. Perhaps this was a good time for them to finally move inside?

“BOOOORIIIING!”

He sighed after his outburst. “Pity. Pretty doesn’t always mean interesting. I suppose the plain one is here for something equally bland.” Kujaku-san turned his back on the pair without checking the identification or waiting for confirmation. “I have investments in several companies. I might recall the one you mean.” There was a chuckle at his own pun as he began to walk away.

“Lead them to my office, Adachi-san. I must tell the guests of this dreadful inconvenience. Hopefully they don’t eat me alive for stalling their evening entertainment.”

Kujaku-san disappeared down a long dark hallway, leaving the investigators with the butler. Adachi did actually check the forms of ID for both Iphi and Morgana before letting them inside and to the office in question. “Wait here. The master will be with you shortly.” And then Adachi was gone too, closing the heavy wooden door behind him. Morgana turned to Iphi.

“So, about Hideki-san…”

A peal of thunder shook the room followed by the lights flickering. Someone screamed in the distance. The shriek was loud enough that it carried across the mansion and through the walls. It seemed they were never going to be able to discuss their mutual contact.

“Never mind about Hideki-san. Or waiting.” Morgana opened the door. “After you, Recall.” Iphi was the Hero, after all.

Iphi had heard that Kujaku was eccentric but to this degree, was a little ridiculous. If only someone who was better at dealing with a wildcard had come along, this would be a lot easier. Perhaps that person could be Morgana? No, she couldn't put her on the spot like that. Even though they came from different organizations, they were ultimately after the same thing. Divide and conquer was a great tool in hero work, but in detective work two heads were better than one.

She didn't react outwardly. Instead, the gears were turning on her move. "Sorry for the intrusion," she gave the customary saying as they entered, folding up her umbrella and placing it gently near the others at the entrance. Even if she didn't end up getting it back, it wasn't a big deal; being able to work on this case was worth 1000 umbrellas.

As they entered the office to wait for Kujaku to be done with his "business" Iphi would turn to Morgana. "You can just call me Iphi btw. Any friend of Hideki is a friend of mine and I-" the scream would completely derail the conversation, and Iphi was already on her feet by the time Morgana was going for the door "As much as I believe you are capable, in the case that this is outside of your jurisdiction as a civilian with a detective license, please stay behind me." She wasn't going to argue with Morgana about leading the way as, legally she was the only person in the room who could do something during a crisis. [break][break]

Morgana wasn’t as familiar with Japanese law as they were with American law, but the decision was obvious. Still, Iphi had gone ahead and said the quiet part out loud just in case. “So it goes,” Morgana said. The literary quote came with a nod of agreement and Morgana positioning themselves behind Iphi to proceed down the hall and toward an open door from which the scream had seemed to emanate and from which frantic voices now spilled.

The difference in their height, sleight though it was, gave Morgana enough of a vantage point to see around Iphi. Which means they got an eyeful of fresh corpse on the floor. Kujaku-san’s corpse specifically. The man was sprawled face down on a clearly expensive Persian rug spread over the dark hardwood floor.

A gaggle of six people surrounded him. They were clearly the dinner guests for the evening. Two women and four men. The latter number also included the butler who was attempting to dial an old school landline phone. “The line is dead. Does someone have a cell phone to phone the authorities?” Adachi looked at Iphi upon saying this, his expression clearly strained, and amended, “The other authorities.”

"How convenient," she muttered. Perhaps it was the logic center of her brain taking over her reasoning or perhaps she just become desensitized after years of work in this profession, but the sight of a dead body wasn't jarring to Iphi in the slightest. In fact, the first the fact that it was Kujaku-san immediately pushed her thoughts to the idea of murder or even a suicide set to frame a guest. Quite literally perfect timing when you needed to get out of a line of questioning, but if it was someone at this dinner party, they were extremely unlucky. Not when you had two experienced detectives poking around.

Clearing her throat to gain the attention of those panicking she'd take out her line only used for hero work and put out a ping to the system that would indicate police forces would be needed at her location. They would take some time getting her as Kujaku's place was well out of the way of normal society "Already taken care of. However, because this has become a crime scene and everyone in this room, aside from myself, is a civilian, I'm going to ask that you all remain where you are." she'd pull out her hero license which as a symbol everyone could recognize regardless of who they were. "I-no we would like to ask you all a few questions before the police arrive." if it was a murder by someone in this room, they better have their story straight. Creating a cover story for yourself would be hard when being questioned by someone with perfect memory and a brain the size of Jupiter...oh, and an immortal as a backup.

Morgana was silent as Iphi took control and command of the situation. Silent, but not inactive. Their eyes shifted from each person in a methodical manner worthy of their dual job titles. The first was a busty red-head that would have had Morgana’s attention even if she wasn’t currently a suspect in a now open murder investigation of which she looked ill at being involved in. The other woman was far older. Perhaps even older than Morgana themselves, only she looked her age. She retained a stoic demeanor in spite of the situation compared to the younger women.

The men, sans butler, while of far less interest to Morgana than the woman in red on a personal level with the exception of the purple-haired person in foreign clothing, were evaluated with no less scrutiny. The blond in the dark suit busied himself whispering into the ear of the final man that drew Morgana’s attention for the similarities he bore to the dead body on the floor. Almost as if related in some manner. Which brought them to the first inquiry, though it wasn’t framed as a question.

“Perhaps we should start with introductions. Some names for faces. I’m Morgana Moriarty. This lovely lady here is Recall. She’s in charge as stated earlier. So let’s all play nice. Starting with you.”

Morgana pointed at the red-head. They weren’t biased, really. If they were, Morgana might have also asked for her number. That still might happen, but only if she was cleared of, you know, being a killer.

“Oh! Me? I’m Akane. Enatsu Akane.”

“Nice to meet you, Akane-san.”

And it was. For now. After that introduction was done, Morgana went around the room. The older woman introduced herself as Fujiwara Yuki. The man with purple hair was Dhumra Rao. His eyes lingered on Morgana almost as much as theirs had been on Akane. The man who whispered his way through Morgana's introduction announced himself to be Kaname Kin and the man he had been whispering to was Kujaku Midori. The very same surname as the murdered host for the evening.

Even though they had only met a short while ago Iphi definitely felt at ease with Morgana around. It was unknown whether it was due to just having a second perspective or because she was used to having Sadako around in the field. In fact the reason Sadako popped into her mind at that moment was because Morgana was awfully similar if not slightly more muted. She was very interested in picking her brain, but given the circumstances, that thought was shoved far into her endless vault. Time and Place Iphigenia, time and place.

Speaking of time, she took a moment to Recall the moment she heard the scream. From what she could tell based on the timing and condition of the guests prior to the incident it was likely that the actual timing of the murder would've been pretty tight. Whoever killed Kujaku-san they had to make everyone would arrive nearly at the same time to discover the body otherwise the staggered arrival times would give more clues. In a high-profile murder case such as this one, it wasn't unusual to run into particularly clever criminals, but this one was bit better than most. Even if it was just for a moment, the rest of the group here would have been alerted to the arrival of two detectives and to still follow through with the murder was extremely bold.

Morgana getting everyone to introduce themselves just made Iphi's life easier. Out of all the introductions, the first person Iphi was suspect of was the relative of Kujaku. She knew that 28.0 percent of homicide victims were killed by someone they knew while 12.3 percent were slain by family members. So, while the odds were that it wasn't Midori who killed Kujaku it would be a great starting point to the investigation as he likely had more information on Kujaku than the rest. "Midori-san I'd like to start by asking you a few questions. What is your relation to Kujaku-san?" perhaps a bit superfluous, but she had a reason.

“He’s my uncle,” Midori replied then frowned and added, “Was. He was my uncle.” His frown persisted though he was dry eyed. Kin placed a hand on his arm in what appeared to be a comforting gesture. Morgana took it in but didn’t allow their eyes to solely rest on the man that had drawn Iphi’s focus for the time being. Questioning one individual might make the others drop their guard if they thought they weren’t being observed as closely.

Akane fidgeted with her jewelry, her eyes averted from the body. Her discomfort at being in the same room with a corpse was obvious. But was it guilt or genuine squeamishness? Yuki was still stoic, her face giving away nothing as she observed Midori answering. Dhumra had taken a seat away from the body, his head bent and eyes closed though his lips moved silently as if he might be uttering a prayer. The butler was still standing at attention by the door, awaiting orders from his master that would never come.

Morgana looked to Kujaku-san after making their visual rounds on the others. Their eyebrows furrowed slightly and a frown turned their lips down to almost mirror Midori’s. They took a couple of steps toward the body before looking back at Iphi, non-verbally asking for permission to inspect the corpse while she continued questioning the guests.

The lack of a visceral reaction from Midori was something to note but not exactly a confirmation of guilt. The human brain processed loss in so many ways that it would be foolhardy to believe that a lack of a reaction wasn't possible while maintaining innocence. He was still the prime subject, sure, but only statistically. "I am very sorry for your loss." she bowed in respect. "I promise I will bring whoever did this to justice. My quirk will make sure the individual or individuals responsible won't get away with it." a little embellishment, but Iphi would take this opportunity to scan the room making mental notes of any subtle shifts in body language by comparing them to the snapshot she took earlier.

Iphi would take a brief moment to look towards Morgana, understanding what she was indicating, and with a slow look towards the body and intentional blink, she figured that she would understand the hint and go for it. However long Morgana had been working as a private investigator, her accumulated experience was showing. Working in tandem with Iphi on an intrinsic level wasn't an easy feat. Either way, Iphi would move on to the butler. She was using a tactic to break down those who were easily startled by first going for those she knew were deliberately closer to Kujaku-san "If you could could you please give me the itinerary for Kujaku-san's day today? As well as the order of arrival of our guests here."

The silent acquiescence to their equally unspoken request led to Morgana squatting down next to the body. They retrieved a pair of latex gloves from their overcoat, which was still damp from the downpour outside. A peal of thunder confirmed its continued wrath beyond the estate’s walls. A few of the guests flinched, but Morgana was steadfast even as they reached toward the corpse to begin examining it while Iphi continued her interrogation of the living.

“Thanks,” Midori murmured quietly in response to Iphi’s declaration. He looked over at Kin again, then to the body, and then to the floor. The butler’s gaze almost seemed to move in reverse of that order. He had been looking at the floor when Iphi approached, then to the body when she asked her question, then cast a glance over to Midori and Kin before answering and shifting his eyes to Iphi herself to give his answer.

“Kujaku-san is… was, what some might refer to as a night owl. He had only been awake for approximately two hours before your arrival. Time that was spent preparing for the party, which was expected to extend until late tonight with dinner and entertainment planned. As for order of arrival, the younger Kujaku-san has been here for a fortnight to visit with his late uncle. Kaname-san arrived several hours prior to see the former. The rest of the guest began to arrive half an hour ago. First Fujiwara-san, then Rao-san, and Enatsu-san was the final to show.”

Morgana had risen back to their full height by the time the summary was concluded. They allowed a few seconds for the words to be processed, at least by themselves as unbeknownst to them, Iphi required only a fraction of that time. Then they quietly interjected.

“Recall. A word?”
