hikari rolls her eyes as she plants her ass firmly on the ground, crossing her arms but blithely extending her leg towards the other girl. junsuina kanjo, hero department, blah blah blah. boooooring. hikari simply could not care less. she's the kind of girl that doesn't find it convenient to remember other people's names if she doesn't find them interesting, cool, or, at the very least, worth being nice to. in hikari's eyes, jun certainly isn't worth it, and hikari is certain to make sure she knows it, too. secrets? hah, makes sense. dude's practically dripping with mystery. this whole damn interaction was a big show just to be grabbin' at something he goes to such great lengths to hide. in some way, hikari might even agree with him. knowledge is power, and power is everything, and if you know someone's secrets, well, you've got some real good blackmail material. see where she's going with this? she's got antoine wrapped around her little finger, and even further when she roves her hand down towards his naval, a tiny smile playing along her lips. that's the thing about relationships for hikari. they've always been a powerplay first, and a way to make her feel good second. she's hypersexual, sure, but she's always safe. she never gives her real name, she never lets anybody take her where somebody might know her, and she lies about every personal detail possible, even the mundane ones. hikari's had countless relationships go wrong, and it's always started by letting her quarries get too close to her. even though this whole situation is ploy in a long string of powergrabs, it's still enjoyable, even if antoine reminds her of someone... someone terrible. someone who hurt her badly.[break][break]
hikari's not meant for love. she never was. it's not something she's truly capable of. she is capable of lust, though, and she's capable of taking power in any way she can. as if on cue, she rapidly snakes her left hand under antoine's shirt and takes hold of the chain coming from his naval, bare skin to metal, and she snickers underneath her own voice, nigh breathless in the heat of the moment. so this is what he's hiding? he's hiding that he's a freak? funny.[break][break]
how unfortunate for him, though. he's just made the biggest mistake of his life. they don't even know eachothers names, but hikari somehow left this situation with intimate knowledge of his deepest secret. what a fool. hikari, though? she's swimmin' in the euphoria of victory. she's had the upper hand the entire time, and she can't deny that she's grown drunk off the taste of power. in the disparity of power between two parties, hikari's true colors shine. she's never too afraid to get hot and heavy and put off her perfect illusion for a few moments, but her behavior here... it's almost unhinged. her pupils are dilated, her tongue cutting itself on her own teeth, and her right hand gently clamps into his shoulder with a surprising amount of force. god, she almost forgets what she's here for. maybe she can ask this dude to give her number to his boss if antoine ever needs some eyecandy at a high profile event?[break][break]

a fishbowl perspective reveals the object of hikari's desire—kaida's journal, albeit a bit too blurry for hikari to make out the exact text of, given her shard's distance from the ground. seconds after the shard has settled itself in the tree's branches, right around when hikari gets half the mind to order the shard to reposition itself a bit further down the canopy and a bit closer to the ground, hikari watches with trepidation as a robin, worm-in-beak, soars up to the very same branch to peer at the shard occupying a space a few inches from it. the robin swallows the worm, and then hops closer and closer to the shard. hikari curses to herself in her head.[break][break]
goddamnit. can you, like, get outta the way?[break][break]
the bird doesn't give a shit. in fact, it peers closer and closer, until it's beak is mere centimeters away from the errant shard of hikari's halo. a pregnant pause passes, and then the bird very suddenly pecks at the shard, and pulsations of acute psychic pain rapidly pass through hikari's body. fuuuuuuck, that hurts, she mentally cries to herself as she physically winces and recoils where she sits across campus, cradling her head. a few students certainly give her strange looks in response. of course, the situation only gets worse when, without hikari even noticing, kaida kicks the tree hard enough to completely dislodge the shard from it's seat in the canopy. more pain ripples through hikari's head in response, but that hardly touches on the fury that further characterizes her thoughts as the shard falls to the grass in front of kaida, prismatic in color, a kaleidoscope erupting from its surface everytime the sunlight briefly catches its jagged faces. hikari continues to watch from it, but she rapidly and blindly picks herself up from her tanning chair in the process.[break][break]

we're adding up the layers of harmony
[attr="class","hikari1-bulk"] a black-haired boy draws near. hikari barely even glances at him, and almost seems to be ignoring him on purpose. as the tide rises and flushes over her bare feet, she refuses to acknowledge farrin, and even stops picking up trash altogether. with a laborious and high-pitched sigh, she decides it's break-time, and tosses her bag in one direction up the beach and her stick in the opposite direction, before raising her arms to the sky and streeeeeetching. her vision of this whole activity is that virtually no student in this school can live up to her, and none of them deserve neither her attention nor her charity—a philosophy that she so generously spreads to farrin. it's whatever, though—today is gorgeous, the sea looks beautiful, and hikari really wants to get into the ocean! nobody will notice if she steps away for a few moments, right? most of all, that black-haired loser won't be a snitch, right?[break][break] without care for the consequences, hikari wanders off into the ocean, relishing in the sensation of warm sunlight flush against her skin. the cool saltwater flowers across her calves, then her knees, then the smooth expanse of her thighs, until she's submerged in the water up to her waist. with a smile, she shakes her head to gather all of her boisterous red hair behind her shoulders, and then pulls it up into a ponytail with the multi-colored, hawaiian patterned scrunchie on her wrist, at which point she delves deeper into the water. unbeknownst to her, the shadow that lingers in the water draws ever near, and even worse, as one of the only people in the water at this point, it's made hikari a target. moments pass in bliss, broken up only when hikari's sage-green eyes lock on rippling water a few yards away from her. she narrows her eyes and tries to ignore the pit that's suddenly opened up in her stomach. soon enough, though, the danger of the situation becomes simply unignorable when a shark-crab hybrid suddenly rises from the water in a burst of seafoam, propped up on it's spindly legs and clacking together some mouth mandibles in hardly mistakable fury!![break][break]  [break][break] "WHAT THE HELL!!!!" hikari wails, terrified as she clutches her arms close to her chest and scrambles backward. the rapid way in which she does this tangles her feet up beneath her, and she ends up landing on her ass in the shallows as the shark-crab draws closer, lifting one huge claw and lurching it towards her body. all hikari can do is try to abscond, but as she does so, her hands only grip wet sand, and she dirty indeed. bernie obviously knew what he was doing—and given that he apparently paid this boy well, this was definitely looking like at least one route to more prestige than hikari would even know what to do with. and, y'know what, that's just the thing about losers. they're not willing to chase and take what they want. unlike winners, they're willing to wait around lazily for opportunity to come to them without realizing that every day without a chance taken is a day wasted. hikari doesn't care about living life slowly because the fact of the matter is that she's a winner in all senses of the word. she lives life in the fast lane, and sometimes the fast lane includes fondling a man she's just met in a dimly-lit booth with at least ten other people watching, almost certainly aware of exactly what she's doing. hikari's not a voyeurist, but she can't deny that she loves the attention, both from this rugged boy and bernie's entourage. what can she say? she thrives in the limelight![break][break]

"omg, no no no NOOO--" hikari's words are useless because they are not a firehose that can rapidly put out a fire, something that has rapidly become a problem in just a few seconds. within moments, the engine fire from the car has spread to the tree, and the leaves act like tinder, very quickly setting the whole thing ablaze within moments with a split-second fireball sent for the exact tree branch the KITTEN WAS ON!!!! hikari can't help it. she almost screams, that's how high-pitched her next gasp is, and sweat quickly forms into a bead on her brow when she realizes that she has probably just KILLED a literally KITTEN on LIVE TELEVISION. WHAT THE FUUUUUUCK. it literally can't get worse than this, she's absolutely convinced. and even worse, the shard that caused this whole goddamn problem is NONE THE WISER. with fury in her eyes, hikari pulls the offending shard out of her halo and stares at her reflection on the shard's surface. they swiftly begin a telepathic but incredibly animated conversation.[break][break]

hikari could ignite right now, she's so mad, and the only thing that stops her from doing so is the sudden realization that the kitten is... alive. somehow. and clinging to some dude's body like it's just seen jesus. and, yeah, it probably has, cuz oh my god. hikari's palm leaves her face and she instead stares with dumbfounded uncertainty at the scene before her. at least the kitten is alright, but... what the hell?[break][break]
only... that kitten is not the old lady's kitten? so... whose kitten is it? this is way too much. hikari is litterally still lingering on the idea that she could've killed the poor thing, and now she also has to reckong with the idea that either somebody out their is missing their poor, almost burnt cat OR this stray's last memory in it's miserable life was almost a literal fucking fireball. hikari genuinely doesn't know what's worse. somehow, though, she regains use of her legs and stumbles towards hiro, genuinely confused.[break][break]

kaida might as well be the vampire to hikari's angel—where the other girl bleeds into the darkness, the redhead seraph thrives in the sunlight. she's laid out on a pool bed, tanning oil slathered across her scantily clad body, and dressed only in a skimpy bikini, the ideal outfit for both showing off and getting the perfect tan line. it's days like these, sunny and without a cloud in the sky, that hikari prefers to dedicate to her hobbies—tanning and eavesdropping, the perfect activities for a girlboss in training. unfortunately for kaida, she already made herself a target. it's just math—when hikari sees a weirdo sequestered away beneath treeshade, and though she will laugh and giggle and point in the moment, she will also make a mental note to revisit them when she has time. gossip is the name of the game, afterall, when it comes to being the most popular and powerful bitch in school, and hikari genuinely doesn't give a shit if it's "rude" or an "invansion of privacy". if kaida didn't want her diary to be read, she should have just, like, thought about it or something. who knows. hikari certainly doesn't.[break][break]
what she DOES know, however, is that there's gotta be something real juicy in that book. that's why, while hikari sips on an iced coffee from the local cafe in an isolated and quiet area of the school's rooftop pool, she gently instructs all pieces of her halo to spread across campus and embed themselves in areas where they're unlikely to be found out. while usually any request of her halo would end up in an argument, this is one activity all of the shards can agree on. for some reason, every personality therein really loves gossip—hikari can't really blame them, though. it's like a really engaging novel for a girlboss who really hates to read.[break][break]
the only shard she really cares about is the one going to the tree she saw kaida beneath. it's a short distance from the pool to the tree, and it only takes a moment or two for the glimmering, scintillating halo shard to fly across campus and come to a standstill far above where kaida is sitting. from there, it gently floats down into the tree cover, where it eventually embeds into a branch directly above the quiet fourth-year's head, only tangentially obscured by leaf cover. unfortunately, with the force it uses to pierce the tree, it jostles the branch just enough to shake down a few leaves, which drift gently on the wind down towards the grass underfoot.[break][break]
hikari cringes as she wordlessly tunes into the shard, allowing her eyes to peer through it's point of view. yiiiiikes. hope she thinks that's just a bird or somethin...

ooh, she's quiet about it, huh? takes the note though, so hikari's quite certain her point got across, and so she lays back in her chair, eager to get back to sunbathing. the point in question, of course, is that hikari's trying to make it abundantly certainly clear that she thinks she's way better than jun is. for her, this is a way of taking up space, asserting dominance, and grabbing power in this school with all of her fingers. she wants to be the queen bee in any situation, and this one is no excuse. whatever it takes, she'll do it, no matter the cost. alas, she thinks that perhaps jun has had enough and that she's just walked off in shame, and so hikari simply lays back against her chair, puts her sunglasses back on her nose, and takes one, long, languishing sip from her water bottle. the vodka burns down her throat, warms her belly, and keeps her mood high even despite the little gym bag mishap.[break][break]
that is until she is suddenly and recklessly pulled back from the walkway, chair and all, and onto the grass. of course, with the sudden nature of this action, hikari spills out from the chair and onto the pavement her tanning salon once occupied, scraping her bare knees against the concrete and only catching herself with the palms of her hands. students milling about the courtyard stop and pause around her, gasping as she rolls slightly in such a way to reveal her now bloodied knees to the crowd. hikari looks down at them herself, and she almost laughs when she sees it, her blue eyes darkening.[break][break]

if hikari were any younger, maybe she would have blown up at jun about this. maybe she would have yelled and screamed and pounded until she got her way, until she was apologized to, whatever. some part of hikari still wants to do that, a little voice in the back of her head that calls for instant and violent retribution, but hikari in the present knows better.[break][break]

it takes little effort for hikari to summon crocodile tears to her eyes. the scene starts as a few sniffles, a few shifts of her body, before it evolves into full-blown sobbing, tears streaming down her face and streaking across her cheeks. she raises her head up and, through wavering strands of her silky red hair, she stares directly at jun where she stands with the chair. with a wipe of the back of her hand against her face, she points one manicured nail in jun's direction, a cry echoing from her lips.[break][break]

and there the notepad goes. god, if hikari knew it was gonna be this easy, she wouldn't have even put on the waitress outfit and she would have snuck in herself! she bites her lip to prevent herself from telling bernie that there's no need to tell them that she's taking a break because she doesn't even work here, and she instead nods with a knowing look and a wink. "make it thirty, babes. can't taste-test the entire menu in just 15 minutes!"[break][break]
there is something she wants to take a bite of before the food comes, though. she waves bernie off and turns towards antoine, where she immediately makes herself at home by sitting in his lap, both of her legs draped across his with one arm curled around his shoulders and another gently running a circle into his chest with her finger. he's cute, that's for sure. but what was that she felt earlier? hard, almost metallic, cool to the touch even beneath his shirt. and did it twitch? how intriguing. hikari can't help but want another feel, as her hand drifts further and further down his torso and her face drifts closer to his.[break][break]

hikari is hardly flustered. it's with a wide smile that she gracefully recovers, lowering her hand to gently massage the remaining globs of tanning oil into the already rather slick surface of her upper thigh. once the tanning oil has been appropriately slicked away and absorbed into her skin, she runs one hand through the long waves of her bright red hair, and the other hand she raises to her face, where she dismissively glances over her nails and checks if she needs to redo her manicure. of course, all of this show and dance isn't a display of how ditzy she is. everything she does is a calculated step in a dance where the end goal is to embarrass jun as much as is physically possible, a practice hikari has engaged in since she was a child. anything to give herself a leg up on the competition, after all. success doesn't come by playing nice![break][break]
"uhhh, why am i here?" hikari briefly sends a condescending glance in jun's direction before looking back down at her nails, as if indicating that the other girl wasn't worth any of hikari's time. "cuz i wanna be. duh?"[break][break]
anyways. this has all been super boring and gross. this absolutely wasn't how hikari planned to spend this afternoon, and getting hit in the face with dirty gym clothes was not in the itinerary, and she couldn't help but admit that she was feeling a bit miffed about it. some of that emotion had to play a part in how she was treating jun right now, probably, although the other half of it could certainly be because hikari never learned any empathy skills in her childhood, and now she's reaping the fruit of her absentee father's labor. regardless, when jun makes a snide comment about hikari's strength, a wicked grin flashes across hikari's face as she rapidly dives to rustle around in her own purse for a pen and paper, upon which she swiftly jots down an order for a cappuccino from a local cafe. with a flourish, she shoves the note towards jun.[break][break]

to be clear, hikari genuinely has no want for money. daddy pays for literally everything, and she's never really had to work a day in her life. her side-gig is almost entirely for her own peace of mind—that peace of mind being acting like a piece of ass for the validation of men, something she's so desperately craved since she hit puberty. regardless, she's rich as fuck. manipedis every two weeks, luxury purses every month, lavish vacations, private jets, you get the deal. the only problem is that daddy is such a LOSER. there's really no getting around it. damn, hikari loves him, sure, but he has no status AT ALL. all he really ever wanted to do was live in peace and quiet when the sheer amount of money he has means he could probably just buy an entire village and live as a king for the rest of his damn life. god, hikari just doesn't get it. why bother with all that cash when you aren't even willing to throw it around and pull your weight?[break][break]
shellies, though... yeah, shellies has the kind of people hikari is looking for. just imagine—tabloids going crazy with her picture on the centerfold, proclaiming she's playing with all the movers and shakers in the upper echelons of society. it doesn't matter that most of these dudes are old and crusty as hell, as long as they've got cameras on them for most of their existence, hikari doesn't give even one half of a shit. the real problem with socializing with these guys is that there's some pretty strict security round people like them, and they won't just let in some girl who claims she's got money. she's gotta have the history to back it up and, to be frank, hikari just doesn't have that. what she DOES have, though, is some unscrupulous methods.[break][break]
namely, the waitresses here don't make very good money. a big stack of yen and off a waitress goes, heading home and leaving her uniform for hikari to change into. and... wow. okay. maybe hikari should dress up as a mermaid more often. the shell bra is really making her... assets... look great. one mirror selfie and hikari is good to go, stepping out onto the floor with little to no suspicion on her shoulders.[break][break]
and right for bernie she goes! a congregation this big has to have some big fish at the center of it, so hikari struts towards all of them, flipping her scarlet red hair over her shoulder as she gets closer. and, as she gets closer, yeah, filthy stinking rich, almost all of them. security doesn't look half bad, either. as hikari passes antoine, she runs one finger from his navel up his chest to eventually curl around his shoulder in a passing, but lingering touch, before winking at him and turning her attention to the table. she leans forward over the table and sticks her hips out, where she rests her arms on the table with a notepad and pen in her palm. how short are these skirts again? looooool. "heyyyy," she coos, batting her lashes. "welcome to shellies. what's the occasion? it's so rare to find so many smokin' hot people in one place."[break][break]
she almost gags. only half of them are even passable, barely even meeting her standards for an average looking person, but hey, manipulation is the name of the game in times such as these.

when hikari signed up for uau, she didn't think half of her time here would be spent roleplaying as an ex-convict catching up on his community service—for example, cleaning up a beach from debris and litter from recent attacks. she had expected drama and intrigue and ACTION, not... god. whatever this is. the girl cringes as she uses a litter pick-up stick to impale what must be what once was a small picnic sandwich now incredibly soggy and covered in kelp and seaweed. she struggles not to gag as she tosses that piece of garbage into her large transparent bag and continues trucking along the beach alongside quite a few other uau students.[break][break]
had she known she would be picking up trash for an entire day on the beach, hikari would have never signed up for this activity. with all the rampaging sealife in the tokyo bay area, she figured she could be FIGHTING a SHARK right now, and not only would she be beating that shark's ass, she'd be doing so in her skimpy bikini with the high potential for cameras to be watching her. alas, it's an incredibly distant dream, only exacerbated as hikari pauses to glance down the rest of the beach ahead. trash litters every inch of the marina, debris from the attacks, and hikari lets out a loud sigh as she presses her stick into the ground and leans back on it, resting her already sore body. luckily for her, she took the initiative to apply tanning oil before coming out here, so at the very least she might get a good tan from this. indeed, the girl's skin is slick and shiny, and an overwhelming aroma of artificial coconut wafts off of her body. with her glistening red hair, it seems like, perhaps, she was made for the beach. though, of course, it's obvious she prefers to be sunbathing right now.[break][break]
unbeknownst to her and most other students on the beach, a large shadow stirs beneath the water and draws ever closer.

cats in trees are totes stereotypical. genuinely just SOOOO obvious. might as well hit yourself with like 100 stupid superhero movies and be done with it. but surprise, surprise, it, like, actually still happens in the year of our lord 2100. hikari almost can't believe her eyes as she tilts her prada sunglasses down her nose to get a better view of the elderly lady clutching her hands close to her chest as she frets at the base of a towering oak tree. a tiny kitten meows frantically in one of the uppermost branches. the sun glints off the serrated edges of her shattered halo, and further cascades down the length of her long, scarlet hair. the sidewalk the situation is occurring on buzzes with activity as tourists, businessmen, and college students alike walk in throngs towards their individual destinations. it's with a grandiose smile that hikari makes up her mind. she'll save this cat, and she'll look sexy as hell while doing it.[break][break]
the young woman (clad in a pure white bodysuit that desperately hugs each curve) strides forward with a flip of her silky hair over shoulder. "hiiiii," she greets the elderly woman without even sparing her a passing glance. in fact, hikari's eyes remain on the crowd surrounding them, watching carefully for any eyes that might be caught on her.[break][break]
"oh, young lady, can you call the fire de—"[break][break]
"SHUUUUUSH. SHH." the elderly woman finds hikari's pointer finger across her lips, thereby pausing her sentence in it's tracks. "omggggg your poor little kitty-tat. that's, like, sooooo sad. i'm so sad for you. seriously."[break][break]
the elderly woman stammers. "uh..."[break][break]
hikari's voice only gets louder, somehow. "its ok you old cow! i'll get your little kitty! that's right, your kitten is about to get saved by the prettiest heroine you've, like, EVER met. that's me, btw. nova luna for anybody listening~! spelled N-O-V-A..."[break][break]
MEOOOOOW. if cats could speak, that was the kitten saying 'shut the hell up and come save me!'. who is hikari to not answer the call? interrupted, but not perturbed, hikari cuts herself off and turns to the tree the kitten has clung to, with its little ears pressed flat against its head and its pupils wide enough to eclipse its irises. with a flourish of her palm, hikari commands control over one of the shards of her halo. unfortunately, the voice within said shard is less than enthused.[break][break]

victorious, hikari directs the shard to slice towards the tree branch upon which the kitten is sitting. the intention is to catch it while it's falling, but halfway through it's trajectory, the shard suddenly dips down. its voice echoes in her head with mocking laughter.[break][break]

hikari's victory rapidly turns to misery as the shard suddenly dips low and veers away from the tree, instead piercing right through the hood of vehicle parked on the curb beside the tree. the street is suddenly and rapidly filled with the car's blaring horn, almost like a siren. hikari exhales sharply and covers her mouth with her hands, eyes wide as she stares at her halo's handiwork. the crowd that had gathered lets out a collective gasp alongside. another gasp escapes them as the car suddenly catches fire.[break][break]
