“Okay, I’ll—” Zipper was too eager to leave. It was better than having to deal with the embarrassment that was coexisting with her newfound crush. Feelings weren’t reciprocated — and why would they be? But it didn’t stop her heart from dropping to the pit of her stomach. All she wanted were long walks on the beach, someone to cheer her on at her events, and the occasional six-inch heel pressed against her throat. But life was cruel and unforgiving. Kioko ordered her to the grave and Zipper complied, unsure what she was supposed to do. Then, it hit her. This wasn’t rejection. Kioko couldn’t help but return her confession with ye ol’ classic tsundere tactics. Not interested? Then why send her to your mother’s grave? It dawned on her all at once… “Hey,” Zipper kneeled down in front of it. “I’m gonna take real good care of your daughter.” Zipper gulped. “If you let me.” Coincidentally to everyone but Zipper, there was a gust of wind. A light breeze, really. Most people wouldn’t have noticed. With a soft smile, Zipper looks back at Kioko and gives her a thumbs up. Her mother approves. They can finally get married.

“Never mind,” Zipper muttered to herself. “Popular, already.” Zipper’s interest waned. What drew her to the girl was how she opted to be alone in an otherwise social setting. Either the choice was deliberate or it wasn’t. While it’d be interesting if it had been a choice, the more likely scenario was that she was shy. Yet, despite her analysis, it turned out she was simply waiting for friends to arrive. Either that or they were a lesbian magnet. Wait, Jun was lesbian, right? Stalking her to the beach to protect her, while heroic, definitely gave off some ‘I’m in love with you vibes.’ Zipper would know after her brief stint with Kioko. And, admittedly, had been avoiding Jun since. She was not her type. Even if she was, Zipper didn’t want to come out yet. She only recently discovered her affinity for tall, goth women and was parsing through that as best she could — by throwing herself into her work and avoiding the thought. Sniff, sniff.Something smells good.

It was time to mingle. You don’t get a glimpse into the best and the brightest of the future until you see them in public. Events like these were vital for their growth. If they were to become a hero, a responsibility that meant more than just saving the lives of others — let’s not forget the important social dynamics they reinforce, along with the vast amount of influence they wield over the culture — then they needed to properly conduct themselves. Zipper was by no means an expert. She lived by the words: do as I say, not as I do. She’s logged thousands of hours on the internet researching social interaction, only to let her over-eager mouth swallow her own foot. Practice makes perfect and if she’s going to manage these people, whoever they end up being, then she needed to implement some kind of filter. Plus, it’s an event. A chance for her to find other bright minds who can teach her the ins and outs of event planning that she was sorely lacking. For as successful as her first event was, it played into the students’ ego. Playing into their hunger wasn’t much better, but it provided a different set of challenges to overcome. Her eyes scanned the food, then the people, then the room. Her eyes fell upon a strange-looking girl with white hair and yellow eyes. Piqued her interest, but there’s always a catch. The same that drew her attention was what kept her hesitant. “Huh,” Zipper sipped her drink. “A wallflower.”

It didn’t matter how many bodies he ran through, Zipper had lost her hat. Unlike the rest of the creatures, mowed down one by one by the machine — two hellish wheels drenched in blood, desperately grabbing onto granules of sand to grip on to — the thief had what they wanted. Like actual octopuses, this creature was smarter than the rest of its comrades. If this were a war against humanity, then while the others focused on violence, this one sought to destroy everything they loved and claim it for their own. The malice was palpable. The cephalopod dug itself underground, safe from Howie’s wheels. Using the corpses as cover, they lost track of where it was, leaving Zipper with the unrelenting, bitter taste of defeat in her mouth. She looked away from the fish guts and spoke just loud enough to be heard over the roaring engine. “Let’s just leave…” Despite what Howie said, he tried his best. And regardless of how well-intentioned he was, Zipper couldn’t see him as anything but a knock-off. Didn’t help she couldn’t keep it to herself either. “Last thing I need is people seeing me with you…”

Jun’s chains wrapped around her. Bound by fear, she kept her eyes closed, only to shoot them open when she felt a familiar texture in her hands. Face to face with the octopus, she gulped before being dragged away. The creature tried to strike, but with Jun letting go of the rock, it lost all balance as it fell backward, the rock landing atop it. Zipper didn’t look back. Even when the visceral splat reverberated through her ears, only dulled by the sound of their feet pounding on the sand. Keep running. Keep running. Keep running. She repeated the mantra until they were safe. Far from the beach, concrete underneath the soles of their shoes, she put the hat back on — sand and all. “Thanks,” Zipper said. “You’ll make it far as a hero.” Zipper shouldn’t have said this but it came out anyway. She didn’t even realize how bad it sounded. “You’re good at following orders.”

More than anything, Zipper was confused. This display shouldn’t have been possible without preparation. Gen had set up without Zipper knowing, which would have been impossible considering the school’s security measures, or he had over three hundred quirks. And, like hell, that was true. Zipper didn’t need evidence. Not only was Zipper a natural skeptic, but the nature of the world worked against Gen’s lie — if he were the first multi-quirked individual, then the world would have known. There was only solace in the fact that if this were his grand reveal… then it would have been on her watch. “Great performance.” Zipper’s back on stage. Then she addresses the crowd. “Just goes to show how many types of heroes there are. You can be a heel, don’t put yourself in a box” Then, her eyes dart back to Gen. “But you don’t have to lay it on so thick, either.” Her eyes scan the crowd for Kupo. Nowhere in sight. Must be getting ready.Zipper heads off stage and searches for him. When she stumbles upon him, she offers a small bow. “I appreciate your patience,” She smiles. “You ready?”

“No!” Zipper was defiant. If she got off the rock now, then everything was lost. This tug-of-war was the opening she needed — the only useful thing Jun could have done while she was here. If this were a one-on-one then she would have lost the hat for sure, but with her target directly below her. “Screw the rock, catch me!” Zipper jumped off the rock. The wind ran through her hair, and her chest started pounding. There wasn’t an athletic bone in her body, but she wasn’t leaving without that hat. She didn’t have the strength to fight the monster, the speed to outrun it, nor the creativity to outthink it. But what Zipper did have was her unwavering persistence. Desperately grabbing out, her finger grazes the hat. Then the next. Then, her whole hand. The octopus throws a tantrum, letting go of the rock and trying to grab Zipper before Jun can. It’s all on the hero student to step up or see one of their classmates fall victim to a stupid blob of flesh. Zipper shut her eyes.

Saved again. And this time, Zipper was dragged onto the motorcycle — they probably didn’t even have a license for this! Thank god, she wouldn’t be an accomplice. If anything, she was a victim not only to these demented sea creatures waging war on the shore but to this hyena who sought to break every rule society established. There was still, however, a nugget of good in him. He didn’t come here to save her, but this was the second time he had done it. It was a piece of him that Zipper couldn’t ignore — when it came down to it, he had the heart of one. Even if he had the ethics of an apolitical collegiate. “My hat!” She calls out. It’s close by, but not for long. Once she expresses interest in it, a six-foot cephalopod yoinks it off the ground and tries it on. It looks in the water’s reflection and loves the way it looks. “Hey!” Zipper is yelling, ignoring Howie. “Give it back!” It’s hard to hear her over the moaning sea creatures and their horrid gurgles as they start to surround the motorcycle. Meanwhile, the octopus scurries off, wanting to leave before those hellish wheels trample over him.

“You’re right.” Zipper saw the opportunity and seized it. Kioko was offering her a chance at redemption, a chance to get back to the heart of the matter. All Zipper had to do was focus on why she followed Kioko as she mourned her family and then pry about what really happened in the incident — and whether or not she deserved a sentence. As the thoughts settled, she realized how awful the situation was. No matter how she framed it, she was trapped. And before she could think of a way out, her mouth started speaking on her mind’s behalf. Unfortunately for the mind, neither of which was polished nor graceful. “I saw you on the news years ago and I didn’t realize it at the time, but I thought you were really pretty, but never gave it much and then I end up seeing you all these years later and I’m like ‘oh, that’s Kioko! I want to talk to her.’ for reasons that probably aren’t great and by the time I realized it I was already following you because I think you’re the most attractive person I’ve ever seen and up to this point I thought I wasn’t into love or romance and no I don’t love you you’re right but I think I could and I never felt that way about someone before so it’s really hitting me all at once and I didn’t mean to bring this up while you were grieving your dead famil—” Well, now she understood how heroes felt normally. To think, a tiny little crush and she folded like a beach chair. “I think I should go.”

Perfect. This is exactly what Zipper wanted. No one can account for everything. It’s a futile attempt by the naive and deluded that the world was a series of inputs. As long as you knew the variables, you could predict the future. Even with the advent of ‘time quirks,’ people have yet to overcome human limitations. But some facts of the universe are known to us. The issue becomes less of who or what but a matter of when. Get a group of aspiring heroes in a crowd, and you’d be surprised by how quickly egos crashed — or maybe you’re familiar with the world and surprised the peace lasted this long. Zipper scanned her attendance sheet. The man, unsurprisingly, was not on it. They were outspoken and self-important, and wanted the challenge. Any reasonable host would have let their comments slide. Any reasonable host who knew what they wanted would have properly ignored them. Zipper, like the businesswoman she was, accepted his deal. It’d be another notch under her belt. “Excuse me, sir,” She stopped as the microphone feedback surged. “If you’d like to show us how it’s done.” She motioned towards the stage as security and stagehands would help the remaining students off of it. “By all means.”

Zipper followed. It’s difficult to determine whether or not she was actually hidden — the sound of her heart beating deafened the world around her. Her thoughts were riddled with the potential futures these two would share with one another. All of which impossible, which made it all the more difficult to push them out of her mind. Zipper had never wanted anything more. Pull yourself together. She grounded herself. You’re here for a reason. Don’t fuck this up by being cringe. How the hell do you introduce yourself at a time like this? Zipper realized the gravitas of the situation. The smart thing to do was to back away and find her another day. It was inappropriate to bring up business while someone mourned the dead. Even more unprofessional to stalk them to the memorial site. “Kioko Kushiki.” Zipper’s body spoke in defiance. It cared not for her qualms — appropriate, inappropriate, none of that mattered! Zipper came here for a reason. And goddammit nothing was going to stop her. “I love you.” Zipper stopped in her tracks. Face red as sin. Fuck.

“I dont’ care if it’s dangerous,” Zipper said. “I’m getting my hat back!” The creature ducks behind a giant rock. Zipper starts inching towards one side and sees them pop out the other. She jumps to catch them and he slides back around. They were playing a little dance where whoever committed first would get what they wanted. During this standstill, Zipper hatched an idea. If both were unmoving, and couldn’t see each other until they made their move, then she’d take the high ground. She climbed atop the rock to get the drop on this dumb octopus. But by the time she peaked over the boulder, they were missing. No tracks either. “Uh, where did it go?” She looks back at Jun, assuming she’s caught up by this point, only to feel the ground rumbling underneath her. From the ground, the octopus sprang lifting the rock in the air and ready to toss it into the ocean with Zipper on top. “JUN, HELP! HELP ME, JUN! I’M DYING!”

Nevermind. They were a monster. A different kind of monster, but the same kind of unhinged frivolity that threatened the very fabric of heroism. The only solace in meeting him was that her life had been saved and the confirmation that someone like this wasn’t a hero. Not only that, but they’d never be a hero, either. There were some with the same mindset but ambitious for money or status. Those were the few, rarer breeds that she might denote worse than this woman in front of her. Sand blasts her in the face, she falls to the ground. And becomes a target for another one of these sea creatures who have no interest in anything other than a free, easy meal. Zipper’s not too afraid, she can make a run for it, but that’s when she notices… Her hat. The sand that blasted her also blasted her hat away. “Wait, I need that…” She looks up at the giant grab claw aiming to slam down on her again and grits her teeth. “Am I going to die here? Like this?” She grabs her jacket and pockets the zipper. If this hyena really isn’t going to help, then she only has one chance to make it out of here. Once chance to get that hat of hers…

“Zipper,” She’s not too interested in the company. With her skillset, she should’ve been able to sneak in and out without a problem. But with this large-footed, stomping princess beside her, the entire mission was compromised. And she was not interested in getting into a fight — self-defense or otherwise. It’d be their fault anyway, for getting into this mess intentionally. “You’re gonna wait here and watch me get my hat.” Zipper was bossy. Too boss. She had no idea who she was dealing with, but that wouldn’t matter. After today, she’d create an entire dossier on her. “If you get me expelled then I will frame you for murder.” She heads off into — wait, hold on. “That’s a joke by the way,” Zipper said. “The murder part. But please don’t fight. If anything we run.” Zipper should’ve just grabbed her hat. There it was, sitting on a rock. Until her useless prattling awakened a creature buried under the sand. They sat up and as luck would have it… it wasn’t a rock! It was a monster’s head. And when it made eye contact with Zipper, her eyes daggering the cephalopod, it ran. “Get back here!” Zipper chased after it. “I’ll actually murder you!”
