Holy crap.Kei hadn't even moved and one of their opponents was out of the ring already. Farrin really did pack a lot of power. All of a sudden it was a 2v1, and Kei was feeling less hesitant about taking up the time-turner's offer to step out himself. He'd do their opponent a favour really; a 1v1 was much more fair. That is, until it was revealed that their remaining opponent was a summoner of something much more menacing than Rahul's bunnies. And several of those somethings were coming right for him. Farrin got the shorter straw in this sure - he got double the knights that were charging Kei's way - but the fact Kei was a support student could not be understated. Farrin was likely prepared to take on multiple large knights. Kei was not. But if Kei ran out now, the knights would run towards the hero student instead and a 1v9 would be really unfair. So the gadgeteer did the brave thing instead and screamed. Covering his face, two metal arms shot out from his back to grasp on the helmets of the two closest adversaries, using them as leverage to vault over them before crashing their heads together. He landed with a stumble, already not liking his predicament. How was Farrin even faring against this?Farrin

"Don't worry about me sensei, I can eat most anythin'! ...Except for celery. I'd probably remove the celery if any of the dishes have them." It was about the only truth he was willing to admit. He wasn't ready to say pineapple didn't belong on pizza or licorice was fake yet. She probably didn't have licorice on hand anyway. Hopefully. Man though, Recall really did know what she was doing. Sometimes he wished he could organize his thoughts and time as efficiently as she could. If he remembered everything he wouldn't need nearly as many journals. So Kei nodded, trusting her judgement. "That makes sense! We gotta take into account unexpected challenges along the way for sure."
And this was one such challenge. Not enough energy was being produced to run the project at full power. A hum escaped Kei as he paced close to the table, tapping at the blueprint sprawled out on the surface. "Well, we got a couple options." Picking up a pen and a translucent paper, he layered the sheet on top of the blueprint before sketching over it. "Expandin' the storage is a no go, but we could be more efficient with the space we do have. Lithium-ion batteries are the best for this but can become dangerous when damaged. Her exterior would help protect them while she's out and about though."Kei slid the sheet with the battery idea aside before layering a new paper. "Another option would be to make her a hybrid. Solar could be her main source of energy, then she could top off by plugging herself into an outlet. The downside to this would be she'd eventually degrade back to 70% until she charges herself again. With two different sources of power though, she'll be able to pick which is more available if she's in a pinch."Both sheets now lay next to the original design, and he turned to Recall. "Both have their pros and cons so pick whichever you prefer."Iphigenia Pavlina

And there was that fated text. Jack was waiting for him in Ground Beta. With a deep breath, Kei picked up the project and headed over with a sated Jawny in tow. His arms spread wide when he was able to see familiar wings. "Hey Jack, ready as I'll ever be!" A strained smile was plastered on his face at the statement. For all the tests they've done, he was still nervous. This was easily the most complex project he'd taken up- and also the one with the most risks. He didn't make a robot or a blaster after all- he made a freaking teleporter. Something he thought he'd maybe be involved in researching when he was well into his career, not as a solo project while he was a student. So many things could go wrong and no one would hire him as a result and he could end up in jail for killing somebody. But you know, at least Jack was confident in his skill. And Jawny had taken up the attention for the moment which was always a plus, loving the pets he was given by his new friend by the way his tail was wagging. "And yeah, that's Jawny! Poor guy was stuck in a pipe when Yaoyao and I found him, so we took him in instead of the bird we were plannin' to get initially."Kei blinked for a moment, confused. "Cats? No, I only have the shark." Silence overtook him as he tried to figure out what Jack was talking about before he realized. "OH! Oh you mean the- yeah! Yeah I do!" His mechanical arms were carrying the device in fact, swinging it around himself for the hero student to see in all its shining glory. "So you came up with a name for it? That's an acronym right? Easier than teleporter for sure." Jack Orion

Kei smiled into the side hug though he wheezed at Yaoyao's words. "Two languages short!" God, it really did take him three languages to understand a confession. Nevermind the fact they held hands long before they even started dating, or how Yaoyao's nicknames started when they first met. He had a long way to go before he could truly recognize the signs that someone was interested in him without having to be asked will you go out with me?He let himself appreciate their time together before the real world settled back in, with Kei noticing the dango was still worked on despite their hug. He really was thankful for Lili's help but they had to work. Especially when the next person in line was an elderly woman who wanted food but seemed too understanding of the wait, surely smiling at the young love before her or something. Sheepish, Kei planted a kiss on her arm. "Yaoyao, we still gotta serve these people."π + π

How many times had Kei gone speechless while working in this stand? Either it was so little that it didn't register or so much that he'd lost count. Either way he couldn't remember, but he sure could add this instance to it. Toru had turned back to the pair when Yaoyao started laughing, and Kei was so close to joining her. It was tempting with how ridiculous it all was- he'd been with her for years, going as far back as their high school days. Their closeness should've made it obvious surely? They even had the couples shirts Yaoyao mentioned. Kei tugged at the side of his own to highlight the 'I YAM' text, too cute not to wear while they were out together. For what it's worth though, Kei didn't laugh, because man did Toru look mortified when the realization set in. He went with an awkward chuckle instead as he held on to the taller girl's arm. "Yeah, this is Yaoyao, my girlfriend! I'm really sorry- I thought you knew."Toru's coolness was lost, replaced with the red face of someone who realized his error. "No, I had no idea. I'll just- I'll see you in class Kei, cute shirts you two-" With that he sped walk away. At least he didn't go in a full sprint like the other customers. Also he actually paid which was a huge plus. Kei still felt bad though. He covered his cheek with a hand. "Oh my god, I talked to this guy for weeks. He was my partner in a project Yaoyao! How could this have happened again without me knowin'?!"π + π

Kei was deep in conversation, ignorant of the stares that would've made him uncomfortable had he noticed. Not that he would've known why they were staring- he was oblivious to their interest too, mind more likely to cook up things they could be judging him for, like how loud he was being or how hard he was to understand when he rambled. So it was a good thing he was focused on the topics Toru provided. Said focus was shaken when he felt himself nudged in the side, letting out a laugh half from giddiness and half from embarrassment- because Yaoyao was right, they still had a job to do. Toru recovered more smoothly from the callout than the indecisive girl from earlier, pressing his hands together as he bowed. "Sorry about that, I came here for a kurogoma." As the lady of darkness prepared the order, Toru turned his attention back to Kei. "Say- are you free after your shift? There's gonna be a demo on a new line of hover gear that I'm sure you'd love. One of them's a motorbike." Kei let out a hiss. "Aw, sorry! I already have plans." Said plans were to visit the food stalls with Yaoyao and stuff his face but that seemed weird to admit while he was working in one of said stalls. He smiled and thanked Yaoyao for the dango before offering it to the blonde. "But I can join ya tomorrow! They have to show that off more than once right?"Toru grinned as he took his treat. "Tomorrow's perfect, it's a date then. And here." He placed the yen in Kei's hand; it was at least double the price of the order. "Keep the change. See you soon Kei." As he turned to leave, the gadgeteer's hand hadn't closed over the money, face blank after the interaction. He- he heard that correctly right? Did he really just- "Huh?"π + π

Ah. There was the realization. Kei laughed a bit. "Ooh, true, they can look different dependin' on where you get it from. It really depends on the cook!" Not once had he assumed the customer was making excuses. He was just glad he could help the guy figure it out. Though the chuckles from the people behind him was an unintended effect- he didn't mean to belittle the guy. He was about to apologize for them when the man fled and he made a realization. "Hey! You forgot to-" But just like that, he was gone. "Pay... Enjoy the dango!" Ah well, giving free food was the least he could do for the embarrassment- he knew he wouldn't survive getting laughed at for overlooking something so obvious. Kei turned to Yaoyao, wholly unaware of the scare she pulled, and shrugged at the encounter. Hopefully the guy would feel better with a full stomach. Fortunately though, that meant they were back to regular business. More treats were prepared and served without much issue, and Kei fell into the motions. He was counting the change when a familiar voice rang in his ears. "Kei! Fancy seeing you here!" He looked up, and lo and behold, it was his fellow support. Blonde hair, a scratch on their ear and clad in their usual hawaiian shirt and pants. Except the weather was actually appropriate for it this time- he still couldn't figure out how he survived the winters in them. "Toru, hey! How are ya?""I'm good, I'm good- You should've seen the exhibits here! There was-" And they were off, with Toru explaining the demonstrations and Kei commenting on each aspect as if he'd been there himself. The excitement was evident between the two. And they may or may not be talking more than necessary, given that Kei was on the clock. π + π

Kei's smile strained at the comment but he didn't speak on it, nodding instead at his request as he stopped the recording. "Got it!" He was about to tell Yaoyao to make them when they asked the customer about his order, prompting the support major to look at what the guy was holding. Two mitarashi dango, two kinako dango, and two anko. Huh. Kei blinked at the sticks, then at the capped guy himself. He opened his mouth- closed it. Dug in their cart for a flyer and a pen. He circled the man's order before showing the flyer to him. "This is what you ordered yeah? Can you hold the ones you got next to the pictures here?" Kei had always been a visual learner- easier to compare images and read than try to retain information by listening. Maybe the customer was the same. Or, heck, maybe he mixed up the names. Then the pictures would help even more. It was a win-win really. π + π

Things were busy. It was the good kind of busy though, where they all were just going through the motions of serving food. More than once Kei was drawn to the dango but he had to remain strong. He could eat when they were done with their shift, mind already wandering to the taiyaki station just three stalls over. But then he got an order wrong. Wide eyes turned to the disgruntled customer holding the incorrect dish, and Kei stared at it hard. Had he gotten it wrong? He wasn't the best at remembering things - out of sight, out of mind - and honestly it was possible with how eventful the festival was. So the look on Kei face was apologetic as his focus returned to the man. "I'm sorry. My memory's not that great." Here he went, devolving to his self-deprecating ways. "Tell you what-" He took his phone from his pocket to show the customer. "The one you got's free, and what you actually wanted I'll record! That way we'll all remember what you ordered." It was a genuine offer; one that would mainly help him not make the same mistake again. Not once had he thought about the implications of what he was doing. π + π

Okay, now this was just his own fault. Kei wasn't a fighter. This was a fact. When there was any sign of danger, he'd avoid the centre of that battle and evacuate everyone he could at best. At worst he'd simply just run, like that time a sea monster was chasing him and Yaoyao down. But then came Farrin, a fighter himself, one of the strongest people he knew, and he asked him to partner up for a 2v2. Had he seen his other match against Michael and Masao? That had to be it- he couldn't think of any other reason the guy would ask him instead of the many other hero students in the department. And what did he do upon receiving the request? He accepted it. Because Farrin was a nice guy who would've understood if he refused, even wouldn't mind handling both opponents on his own if Kei wanted to call it quits. It was Kei who wouldn't forgive himself if he had to make the time-turner find someone else for the challenge. He really was his own worst enemy. The support major stood on his side of the arena, staring with wide eyes at their opponents. Did they have to look so scary before the match started? He wheezed in response to Farrin's words. "Okay." Farrin creates an opening, Kei uses it. Good plan. Solid plan. As for what he'd use that opening for, he'd have no idea until the opportunity rose. Farrin

The stranger's words were going in one ear and out the other at this point, her mutterings registering as static in Kei's head. He knew he shouldn't tune her out like this- what if she finally made her choice and he missed it? Then she'd get mad and the people behind her would get mad because he was taking too long with fulfilling her order and- He jumped when Yaoyao's hand slammed down. It wasn't meant for him - he knew this - but consider his attention captured when she was about to roll this person like dough or however that saying went. What caught him off-guard though was her sudden change in demeanour. Soft but firm, it was Lili who took the reins in letting the customer know she was holding the line. She turned back as if to confirm that was the case before a look of distraught overtook her face. "O-oh gosh, I'm sorry! I'll be back later then!" Instead of going to the back of the queue however, she left the stall entirely. Maybe she got so embarrassed she didn't want to face them again? Or maybe it was the knives? It was probably the knives. Kei turned to "Yaoyao" with a smile, whispering. "Thanks Lili."π + π

He did know she was kidding, which let him laugh at the act. It wasn't like she was wrong anyway- she had always been the better cook between the two. "Scoochin'!" Kei gave his girlfriend room to do her work as prompted. He was thankful for her extra hands. While he was capable of the same, the claws at the ends of his own mechanical arms didn't have the finesse to handle thin sticks without ruining them. So Kei left his girlfriend to prepare the treats while he was in charge of the interactions. As he waited for the next customer his brow furrowed. Why did he feel like he'd forgotten something all of a sudden? The thought was shaken when a girl with pigtails walked up to the pair, eyes wandering to the menu. Kei smiled. "Hi there, welcome! What can we get ya?"She hadn't turned to him, wholly focused on the text. "I'll have the uh... kuri- no that might be too nutty... kinako- ah, messy... maybe sasa- actually that takes too much work-" Oh god. Kei's smile shrunk a bit. "Uh, maybe you should stand to the side if you're not sure-""No no, I'll get it! I just have to read what else is there-" The number of people behind her was growing and they were getting restless. He eyed the line. How long was she going to take?π + π

So this wasn't the kind of volunteer work Kei was used to. Usually he'd man an exhibit for a new piece of tech, or join a friend in being extra hands in a fundraiser. Those times he helped Jun lead a class in an orphanage brought him out of his comfort zone a bit, but at least that was manageable. Teaching a few kids how to make dolls? Fine. Now though, now he was running a dango stall while the sports festival was in full swing. As for how he got here, well- it was a place he felt safe in because it took up the time slots that some of the competitions ran in. Can't enter a challenge if he was too busy serving food. You're not putting him in another fight, world. He was just glad he didn't need to manage the stall alone. Kei handed out two more skewers in exchange for cash before turning to his partner. "Thanks for doin' this with me Yaoyao. I dunno how'd I'd be if I had to run this by myself."π + π

Annnnd Kei was immediately caught. Damn it. "It was that obvious huh?" God, he hadn't even lied. He was just omitting a truth! Why was he so bad at this?In seeing the guy's own pets though, he relaxed. "Yeah that does help. Though I will say, at least yours are meant to be on land." Because yeah, fox and lynx were weird, but they still weren't shark with feet weird. He's still not mentioning it though- at least not yet. He didn't want to look like he was competing with Jack on who had the most odd pet. They had a job to do anyway. Kei's eyes were drawn to the sketch, nodding. "We need the GPS to pinpoint where you'll end up for sure. Gotta be detailed enough that you don't end up in a wall or somethin'." Oh boy, the potential problems were leaking in already. Hopefully he wouldn't bring down the guy with his negativity.
Kei nearly called it quits at one point. The time he and Jack spent testing his quirk turned from days to weeks; several items broken as results ranged from duds to the subjects getting burnt to a crisp to the device itself exploding. Sure, the support student was used to failure. Yeah, he expected this to happen when working with such volatile energy. But with each burst and object ending up "dead" by his standards - and those standards were high, this thing was supposed to be used by person eventually - came the increasing realization that maybe he wasn't cut out for this. That he found a limitation he couldn't surpass. Teleportation? Man, who was he kidding, being the one to accomplish that? Jack was such a good guy too. He was gonna let him down. But then the apple teleported. It was charred; burnt once again due to the energy it endured but the fact it moved at all was insane, let alone the distance. It cleared the entire room. Previous tests it couldn't even nudge itself a centimetre. He didn't realize he was cheering until Jack joined him. All they needed was to adjust the power and the limitations of the teleportation and they were set.
And just like that, the day of final tests had come, and Kei was as excited as Jack was. He was preparing to leave his apartment when he received the call, brow perplexed at the request. "Bring Jawny? What do you need him for?" As if on cue, the shark padded his way to the student's feet, tongue lolled out as he looked up at him. Kei covered the receiver with his hand. "No Jawny, it's not time to walk yet-" Oh god he was giving him those eyes again. The kind that would net him treats outside what he was allowed to eat. The gadgeteer was getting better at resisting him during those times, but trips out weren't nearly as bad surely? Kei groaned as he lifted the phone back to his ear. "Yeah, I'll bring him." Jack would hear barks on his end as the support student laughed. "I'll see ya in a bit." Hanging up, there was one more number he needed to call. He raised the phone again after clicking his favourite contact. "Hi Yaoyao, I'm takin' Jawny out..."
He was in the lab now in his usual jumpsuit, the landshark nestled at his side gnawing on a piece of jerky while he scrolled on his phone, waiting. What could Jack be planning? Jack Orion
