His right arm was clutched tight near his chest, his left still out and ahead, pointed in Akihiko direction. He wore all the dressings of a hero ready to fight. Akihiko continued shrinking, but you could never be certain if the physical deterioration matched his will to resist. There might still be some fight left in the dealer.
Luckily had finally smiled at Farrin and Keeper. Well, maybe it was more of a snicker than a smile like fate refused to give them an easy one without putting them through the wringer first. Giant demolition site, then the trio near the mall, now a feckin' kaiju. He and Keeper would soon be in for another trio of bads if they followed the pattern. Hopefully not. In any case, Akihiko was down, it seemed. Like truly defeated. His size diminished into that of his natural chimera quirk form, then landed back on the pale man from earlier.
The chopper hung overhead, its light shining down on the scene of battle. Farrin paid them no mind. As much as he wanted to chew them out, they were an unfortunate reality of hero society-- as they were of any war zone around the globe and other catastrophes. People deserved the truth, but sometimes it might pay those truth-hunters, the news media, to back off until things were less hectic.
Farrin nudged Akihiko's unconscious body with his boot. Nothing. So, he leaned over and checked for a pulse next. Yup, he was alive—finally, a lead. And with Farrin's license and clear hand in apprehending the foe, he might even be able to inquire with the authorities about what comes of the inevitable interrogations. Plus, he had another little bonus on hand. A deft glove fingered the syringes Farrin had in one pocket, then checked for the vial in the other. He would turn over the vial and most of the needles, but it might be best to hold onto two syringes. One for him to bring back to Above & Beyond and another in case Keeper had her own resources.
Speaking of, Farrin backpedaled and looked to the building Keeper had landed in to confirm she was okay. The panels topping Akihiko in his larger form enwrapped in something of a constrictive belt and held him in place as he shrunk. Clearly, she was alive, but could she operate on her own, or would she need some help getting out of there? Once Farrin knew, he could decide whether to run her out of the area or stick around to help the soon-to-arrive police.

That one was followed by another, then another. Day had fully submitted to the coming of night now. The cold, dark skies ran parallel to the bright radiance of the city below. Tokyo was among the most populated cities in the world, and it showed.
Farrin continued his patrol, focus narrowed by a keen determination to see the people safe. Yeah, his official practice patrol had ended, and he wasn't technically supposed to go looking for trouble. Still, if he happened to be wandering about the city and saw a dangerous situation stirring - well - it was technically within his authority to intervene now. Right place. Right time. Who was to say otherwise?
And so, as if deigned by the powers that be, Farrin found trouble. It just wasn't the sort he had expected.
Armored boots slapped onto the building edge, and Farrin planted himself there, eyeing the pedestrians below, when his gaze became fixed on a lone figure—someone stumbling over the edge—literally!
"The feck? Dun' do it!" He shouted, having the wrong idea and leaping in the girl's direction.
As fast as he was, she was already over the edge and out of sight from this angle. She was partway down a building a few streets over and fell into an alleyway. Farrin bounced about the air and leaped from one building to the next, then trailed the path of descent. Annnnd, found nothing. No splatter. No body. Quirk intervention?
"Help!"
Oh. Farrin turned to a dumpster. The hatch was slammed shut tight, like metal bent. This thing was damaged. Soooo, she was stuck. Farrin grabbed at a bar for leverage, then yanked the lid open.
"Oi! Th'feck was that?" He asked, eyeing the woman for injuries. "Yuh' alright, lass?"

Freight. The first inundatory dose of the quirk drugs gobbled up by his chimera form had loosed sanity's shackles over the dealer's mind. What more could a few more drops do? Quite a lot, apparently.
The beast's wings enveloped its gargantuan form after Farrin landed the hit against its eye. Muscles like boulders somehow grew even larger. Madness took the monster entirely. It shook, bristling with strength and mania. The winds whipped into a storm as the monster's wings parted, and with one swipe of its claws, it tore into another building. Then, the behemoth slammed into the ground. Its flesh grew bright, from dark blue to something of a reddish hue. Like that of blood.
A chopper above, "Juko News," panned a light onto the monster. Idiots. They must have had a death wish or something. Clearly, they possessed no sense of self-preservation. Which meant it was up to Farrin and Peacekeeper to keep their dumb asses alive. And that's exactly what happened.
The monster lunged into the air, a paw larger than the helicopter reaching for the chopper. One strike would shred the vehicle and its occupants to bits. Shattered metal and corpses to be scooped up however much later.
Farrin prepared to jump, but Keeper soared in from above, her arm took the shape of a massive spike, sharp as is was giant. Giant weapons for giant monsters. It made sense. A silent explosion followed-- a kinetic boom. Building and car windows shattered, then the thunderous ring followed. Keeper and returned the beast to earth. Now it was Farrin's turn.
Blood seeped into the monster's fur. It kept one eye shut. The other was locked on ahead. It was looking right at him. It continued to grow even still, but the warmth of its breath could be felt from down the street. Akihiko was panting. The beast's breath was labored. All that size and strength, what stamina it would take to even move.
"It's over!" Farrin shouted, drawing his weight back onto his right leg.
Emerald power crackled around him. He flew ahead in a burst of light, a cut across the distance. The green glow of his connection with time burned bright around his right fist, and then the boy was just below the beast. He kicked off the ground and blasted up into the behemoth. Keeper head it on top of its head, now Farrin's fist crashed into its jaw.
The monster lumbered back. It swung clumsily in Farrin's direction but missed. Its aim was entirely off. Its brain clearly befuddled. The behemoth stumbled back, then fell backward onto the ground. And the earth rumbled with its fall. It rolled onto its side, and slowly, its size decreased. He was running on steam. Had to be. But was it over?

Sirens screamed in the distance, and the whir of helicopters overhead grew loud. They had spectators, which could be a problem. Backup was on the way, which was perhaps more a curse than a gift. Policemen wouldn't stand a chance against something this large. Farrin's wrist cannons hardly scratched the beast. Small arms fire wouldn't stand a chance. If they weren't carting a hero over, they would only add to the variables needing to be accounted for.
"Eh, easy-peasy," Farrin chuckled half-heartedly.
Akihiko was barely holding on. It was clear in the monster's eyes. The moment the flames from Farrin's incendiaries went out, the behemoth looked below with eyes of ichor and death. It thrust itself forward and slammed onto the street. Fissures spiraled out from below each of its muscular limbs. Razor claws cut deep through the pavement. Then the monster leaped forward, thrashing his head this way and that and snarling with teeth the size of Farrin's arm.
Farrin leaped back several meters, then kicked off the air using temporal fields. Deceleration to "harden" the air, and acceleration to create an equative reaction from his kicks, the boom throwing him up into the air. He kicked again, beaming toward the beast. Its open maw stretched to meet the student hero, but Farrin kicked again and arced through the air. Then, the paw caught him on his side. It was massive, larger than Farrin's whole body, and swatted the boy away.
Farrin crashed into a large parking lot. He smashed through a support beam, then rolled along the floor for a few more feet until the momentum died. Pain. Immediate and immense. It swelled and burst along the left side of his body. His brain rattled in his skull, and his bones were shaking.
"Holy feckin' hell," Farrin coughed up.
The behemoth's gaze was fixed between the levels of the lot. It was firmly locked onto Farrin now. Exposed. Farrin's muscles screamed in protest and burned him from within in a burst of agonizing speed, but he pushed anyway and flew forward. He boomed across the level, then leaped out toward the monster's eye. He thrust his hands forward, reaching, aiming.
"Take this!" He shouted.
A crack of thunder. The hero was swatted aside again—this time from his right. Farrin slammed into the street and was planted into the ground. Akihiko turned in his direction again. Those eyes. Those large, monstrous eyes. And now... one of them was bleeding. The vials weren't in Farrin's palm any longer. They shattered right in Akihiko right eye.

A plan, good or bad, was better than no plan. Best case scenario, they took the big beastie down. Worst case, well, hopefully they come out with a little more usable intel.
“On it,” Farrin replied, dashing a good ten meters to dodge the massive monster that was Akihiko.
He took a moment to line up another barrage. This time, he fired adhesive rounds at the behemoth’s feet. Maybe the blue goop would hold him in place and buy Peacekeeper time. It didn’t.
Akihiko lifted its gargantuan paw. Concrete chunks lifted up with it and came crumbling down onto the ground. Paying Farrin little mind, its fury-filled eyes were fixed on Peacekeeper. The monster charged. The small building didn’t stand a chance. It tore through the superstructure like tissue paper, clawing up high in an attempt to slash at the vigilante.
“Shite, shite, shite,” Farrin repeated, scanning over the ground near where Akihiko had devoured the briefcase.
The behemoth’s every step at Farrin’s back was a thundercrack, but he had to trust Keeper to hold its attention. The situation was getting out of hand. Luckily, many of the buildings in the old Tokyo ghetto were long abandoned.
“Oi! There we go,” he said, successfully working its way into the singsong lilt of his voice.
There were still three vials and a few syringes. He pocketed one vial and sped over to the collapsing building. “Over ‘ere yuh' thick-skulled gob!” Farrin shouted, trying to give Keeper a little room since the Behemoth had been tearing through the building while giving chase. When it turned, he was met with incendiary fire from his wrist launcher.
Those shots hit the hardest of his glove-integrated cannons, and it showed. The behemoth backed up a few steps and shook his burnt face from side to side, just enough time for Farrin to leap into the ruins of the building and find Peacekeeper, the two remaining vials in hand.
“Right, what’s the plan?” He asked.

Even with a view dotted by stars and framed with blurriness, Farrin saw more of the roof crumbling above. If that was Zenkai's quirk Marlene now possessed, it was starting to run rampant. Silt caked over the black of his hero outfit cracks webbed out across a chunk of the ceiling above, and then it collapsed.
"C'mon now, give us a break," he coughed up, raising his hands.
A flat field of temporal deceleration formed a few feet above his palms and caught the falling stone. Rolling over, he saw the giant beast lumbering back toward its scythe. "S'all gone bleedin' arseways, hasn't it?" he muttered to himself. A few pokes from his stun rounds and then that massive red mollywhopping from Marlene, and the fecker was back up and on the go. Farrin needed to take the offense, a serious offense, but any move from this thing sent him flying.
Then he heard it—the battle cries of the heroes outside as they entered the half-ruined police station-made club. A woman in red rushed over and offered her hand. A bloody Valkyrie, for all he could tell. He hadn't recognized yet many of Japan's top heroes aside from the few he really studied, but the woman exuded confidence, anger, and care in equal measure. Telltale marks of a hero.
"Aye, lass, I think so. Room jus' needs ta' stop spinnin' so much," he answered, half-jokingly.
That's when the litter of marching band kittens came about. The kitty brigade charged up the boy's inner battery, warded away three days' worth of taxed stamina, and the damage he suffered against the monstrosity as well. It wasn't entirely gone, but it diminished greatly.
"Oh yeah, I can certainly do somethin' like this," Farrin followed up, a smirk growing across his face.
He had been exhausted the entire fight, but the lad was strong-- like incredibly and deceptively strong for his size. The crackle of emerald power encircled his body as time turned up, full acceleration. Yup, it was time to take the offensive.
"Le's see yuh' get back up from this!" He shouted
Farrin leaped above the beast and formed a field around a foot-sized patch of air. The field swiftly dissipated, but the effects remained for a split second. At that time, the air, which was brought to near-stillness, acted like a solid he could kick off right toward the back of the monster's head. The emerald sparks concentrated around Farrin's leg, and he delivered a kick with force enough to crumble a small building. Knocking it forward would throw it right into the line of fire of Marlene, Zen, and the other heroes. This one wasn’t even courtesy of the quirk drugs. Akihiko hadn’t taken any. As a matter of fact, he dropped the case, which would have to be retrieved soon. But first things first. They had to take the chimera down.
Peacekeeper went high, so Farrin went low. With the mess of goop and hair clustered around the vigilante's leg, she thrust upward into a kick that boomed against the serpentine head of the beast. Farrin let the tails go and sped forward, then dropped into a slide. With the creature reared up again, its hind legs supported all of its weight, so Farrin thrust his feet ahead and knocked its right leg out from under it. The monster toppled over and then rolled a few times before stopping.
“I know yer’ feelin’ that one, beastie,” Farrin’s muttered, coming to a stand beside Peacekeeper.
And it did. Akihiko slowly picked himself up, but his legs shook. His heads swayed from side to side. It was working. He was strong. In a one-on-one, he might even be strong enough to overpower either Peacekeeper or Farrin in terms of raw strength, but he couldn’t focus on several directions at once. The three heads and the many limbs lacked coordination, which could be exploited.
Defecation meet oscillation.
Akihiko roared. His words bellowed from three mouths, weaving together in a horrendous chorus. “Clever little shits, but I play all the angles.” The beast spun, lashing its many tails in the hero-student and vigilante’s direction as it did. He wasn’t close to hitting them, but it would wave them off if either approached. His lion head dipped, then crunched on something.
Farrin’s eyes narrowed. “Wha— oh shite.” It dawned on him. “The drugs.”
Akihiko turned back toward the duo, spittle oozing from between its teeth. Shattered syringes clattered against the ground, and the beast grew larger—larger still. Muscles rippled. Three heads merged into one. This time, it was about the size of a mansion—maybe larger. Hell, they were going full kaiju.
“Well…. feck,” Farrin cursed.
He didn’t waste a beat. Taking a note from Peacekeeper’s book, Farrin went for the eyes. He aimed his wrists upward, abandoning the wound at his side. One after another, a stream of stun rounds flew up at the beast but dove aside, crashing into a building and then charging them. It was fast, really fast.

There was a definitive lack of Freja Helt. Had they lied? Or was she being held in another location? If he were a crook, he would keep his prime hostage off-site if things didn't go as planned. Always keep an ace up the sleeve and all that.
"Easier ways ta' get an autograph," Farrin commented when this Isamu Kato mentioned his being a fan.
Had Farrin's reputation overtaken him in the race off campus? His name had circulated around school, that much he knew, but if villains outside of Ouroboros and the other elites out there, like Freja's Spiders, knew his name, then Oberon's name was growing faster than he was. And this was just the first of such consequences. Consequences that would require his attention later.
Farrin's hands shot up to intercept. Don't get stabbed - got it - that was already the plan. He would snatch at Isamu's forearm to hold the knife there. If successful, Farrin would immediately draw his right leg up to kick at the crook's ribs three times. He was trying to double the man over-- open up sight lines on the gaggle of goons so he could blast at them with his wrist launchers. Neutralize the threat before they could threaten the other hostages. But, to do that, he needed Isamu out of the way. If the fellow was true to his word, an experienced mercenary and one with a keen eye for combat, that might not be so easy. One step at a time.
Whether the maneuver saw Isamu fall over or not, Farrin would be quick to follow up, "So, am I ta' take it the lot o' yuh dun' have Freja Helt then?" He asked, drawing back a step. Maybe one more brawn than brains would speak up and tell him what he wanted to know before someone else could silence him.

Akihiko's attention had turned to her, its serpentine head lashing and her, but the vigilante was nimble as she was strong. She not only avoided the attack but, with some nifty quirk wrangling, mounted the chimera's back. Akihiko leaped a few times, then rolled over. Rage seethed in the monster's eyes, spittle dripping from the lion's mouth. It rolled a second time, then a third.
It was a nasty quirk, that was for certain. There were plenty of transformative quirks out there, but often, they simply enlarged themselves or shrunk. Sure, some became troll-like beasts, and others could shift into something like a tree, but each instance saw some weakness grow alongside the transformer's strength. Akihiko didn't appear to be all that strong in his typical form, but with the activation of his quirk, he had grown larger, stronger, faster, and far more ferocious—a deadly combination... with no weaknesses in sight. Well, except for that one little thread Farrin was still tugging at.
Farrin's open palm was clutched against the burning gash across his gut. Powerful as the pain was, his determination was stronger. He had a plan. Well, the seeds of one. They only needed a little watering.
"Right then, Fido, let's no drag tracks all 'cross the couch now."
Akihiko spun. One wing beat back, trying to slap the hijacker off, then the other wing followed. A massive claw swiped Farrin's way, too, but was entirely off-mark. That was opening enough. Farrin stepped back, then lunged forward into a sprint. He dashed circles around the beast, drawing the attention of the lion's head and the weird griffon one as well. The serpentine mind was still curled upward, snapping at Peacekeeper, but with its attention divided, no one blow landing near his marks. One mind divided by three heads? It couldn't be easy to focus like that. It swung again for Farrin—another miss. Then, the young student cut behind the beast and latched onto two of its tails, one like that of a large cat's and the snake's tail, too. The muscles along his back tensed, and his feet ground into the pavement below. He tugged and tugged until the creature's hind legs gave and fell onto its knees. Its forelegs held, but it had to be an awkward position to retaliate in. Maybe Peacekeeper would find an opening in the chimera's confusion? If they laid enough damage in on the heads, no matter how large, the monster would eventually fall.

Farrin wouldn’t be paid for a practice patrol. That wouldn’t come until he was a full-fledged hero. But his drive wasn’t for the money. No, it was a burning desire to make a difference. To ensure everyone who left in the morning made it home at night. So, Farrin leaped. He leaped and jumped and leaped again. His eyes were peeled, watching the bustling world below from between buildings. The sun had set and he had finished his classes hours ago. Nothing in the rules said he couldn’t prolong his little patrol, especially now with his preliminary license.
“All quiet, fer’ once,” he said, a smile framing his face as he skidded across one of the building tops.
The young student set his left palm on his neck and leaned into it. It cracked with a resounding pop, followed swiftly by a wash of relief. “D’ere we go. Needed that.” Words whispered to the ether and spoke as Farrin sat along the building’s edge.
Each of those little dots below represented a life—a person on their way home from work or maybe going out to dinner. Perhaps out for some late-night shopping? Who could say? All of the above and more was the accurate answer. In another life, maybe he would have known normalcy. Then again, given what he had seen while sailing through sifting dreams, not likely.
“Should look inta’ gettin’ d’at job though. Somethin’ simple, part-time, might be nice.”
It was an idea he had been toying around with for a while now. With Sada roaming around Europe and many of his other friends leaving the school, there wasn’t much “normal” left to him. It was back to training 24/7. He was committed to the hero’s journey but wouldn’t give up the ghost entirely. The occasion taste of that normalcy might do him some good.
Farrin shook his head and cast the thought away. He was still on patrol, and there was work to do. The calm streets below didn’t represent all of the massive metropolis. It was best to keep on the move. So, he kicked off the building’s edge and leaped back into the night.

He would go as far as to call it mystifying. Who on earth had the gall to take a student of one of the most prestigious hero academies in the world captive and then use them as bait for another? The author of this grand design was as brazen as they were arrogant, and that arrogance measured to the nth degree.
"Hol' on, Freja," Farrin said, framed in a scowl.
He tried calling his friend, desperate to confirm the nature of the threat, but there was no answer. He hadn't known she was currently flying home to Denmark. As far as he was concerned, this was real. Freja was as capable as they came. Quirk or no, she could swing that bat with all the precision and power Farrin carried in his fists. If they had subdued her, well okay, maybe some small measure of that arrogance had been earned. Just a very small bit. But Farrin was determined. He would not rest until he had rescued his friend.
Indecision stalked Farrin's every move through the day. The clock was ticking, and time was nearly up. All but a few night classes were out, and Farrin finished the bulk of his daily training. He continued on through the night, shadowboxing atop his hill, waiting for an answer to come to him. Ultimately, he called the police, but only just before making his way to the convenience store. He gave the police operator his name, status as a UAU student, and even a plan of attack. He asked that they keep a wide perimeter. Hopefully, Farrin, using the authority inherited by his preliminary license, even if he was stretching it a bit, would see if he could handle the situation. If not, or if they made for an escape, the place would be surrounded if the police went along with his plan and didn't just bring another hero into the mix that was.
With the call made and the time drawing on him, Farrin took off in his hero outfit. The air cracked with each step he took, the sound barrier long ago broken. He kicked off one building, then again off the air itself. The location wasn't far, only seconds away from campus while moving at time-turned speeds. His arrival was marked with a thunderous boom that rang across the skies. Then he landed.
A nonchalant entrance, Farrin walked right in. Six marks, a few visible hostages. Myriad calculations ran through the student's time-turned mind. He could enwrap their firearms, slow the speed of the trigger and ensuing gunpowder ignition, and finally, the bullets' acceleration. But they might have quirks. With six enemies, using the law of averages and modern time's fifty-fifty split between quirked and quirkless, the odds were at least three had quirks. Of course, if they were specialized, members of Ouroboros, or more likely, the Spiders, all six might be armed with quirks.
"Well, lads. Yuh' wanted me. 'ere I am. So, tell me, yuh' rather turn yerselves in now or yuh lookin fer' a trouncin first?" He said with a smirk, "I prefer the former, but I dun' mind the latter if yer keen on it." He needed to get them talking, their focus on him rather than the innocent people kneeling before them.

"No. The freedom found down there is fleeting and requires absolute submission. It will cost you that which you can never afford to lose." Every piece, every part, every fiber of Farrin's body pleaded that he jump. Torment inside and out. Enough was enough already. But deep below a sea of sand and threads, those far from the black waters he tread now, he knew it was wrong. Something in the vagrant's voice resonated in him. It was the him of another time, another story, but one similar to his own.
"I- I know," he answered.
Still, his golden stare tried to pierce the black void. It swallowed the whole of the ocean yet hungered for more. An appetite felt by all who ventured here. It wanted more. It wanted him.
A younger Farrin wandered the city streets. His arms were wrapped in muddied bandages, drenched with murky waters and blood. He sped down the highway, racing anything. Everything in sight. He had to become faster. Faster. Faster still. Delilah had left the runners. Farrin joined her. Or, well, he tried, but she hadn't wanted him at her side any longer. That much was clear. She went one way. He went another. The Runners were getting along without them after selling the experimental weaponry, even if barely. Occasionally, Farrin stopped by to check in on the lot, but they didn't look at him the same anymore. It hit the news that someone was ripping the local mob apart, presumably Delilah, and so the rest grew to fear her. Farrin, too, even if he hadn't anything to do with it. She had changed and struck her enemies down without mercy. It wasn't justice, but anger - and probably fear - that drove her. No need to be afraid if nobody could ever come close to you. Enemies, allies, family. Kill them, push them all away, and you are safe for all of time.
And there was nothing Farrin could do. Del refused to listen. So, he ran. He ran, and he kept on running. Into the black of night and the shadows of day. Into danger, too. Days. Weeks. Months. Time melded together. It wasn't much longer until he collapsed with exhaustion. For every life Del claimed, Farrin tried to save another. To balance her scales as best he could, even if from a distance, but it became too much, even for him. And that's when he realized he needed to become something more. Something greater. Something he saw only in those few glowing dreams from another time, another place. Something the world would call Oberon.
