nother day, another dollar. Okay, not really. Farrin wouldn’t be paid for a practice patrol. That wouldn’t come until he was a full-fledged hero. But his drive wasn’t for the money. No, it was a burning desire to make a difference. To ensure everyone who left in the morning made it home at night. So, Farrin leaped. He leaped and jumped and leaped again. His eyes were peeled, watching the bustling world below from between buildings. The sun had set and he had finished his classes hours ago. Nothing in the rules said he couldn’t prolong his little patrol, especially now with his preliminary license.

“All quiet, fer’ once,” he said, a smile framing his face as he skidded across one of the building tops.

The young student set his left palm on his neck and leaned into it. It cracked with a resounding pop, followed swiftly by a wash of relief. “D’ere we go. Needed that.” Words whispered to the ether and spoke as Farrin sat along the building’s edge.

Each of those little dots below represented a life—a person on their way home from work or maybe going out to dinner. Perhaps out for some late-night shopping? Who could say? All of the above and more was the accurate answer. In another life, maybe he would have known normalcy. Then again, given what he had seen while sailing through sifting dreams, not likely.

“Should look inta’ gettin’ d’at job though. Somethin’ simple, part-time, might be nice.”

It was an idea he had been toying around with for a while now. With Sada roaming around Europe and many of his other friends leaving the school, there wasn’t much “normal” left to him. It was back to training 24/7. He was committed to the hero’s journey but wouldn’t give up the ghost entirely. The occasion taste of that normalcy might do him some good.

Farrin shook his head and cast the thought away. He was still on patrol, and there was work to do. The calm streets below didn’t represent all of the massive metropolis. It was best to keep on the move. So, he kicked off the building’s edge and leaped back into the night.

Yu-chan...no The Weaver why was that so hard to remember? They were the same person after all. She just wasn't good at juggling this double life thing. When she had to pretend her debt collectors were friends to her parents she only barely managed to convince them [Editor Note: they are nearly as dumb as she is] [break][break]

A patrol? Patrolling what exactly? Kawahara was confused by the request since it wasn't like she owned this area. From what she knew (was told) that was The Spider, a villain up and coming was the big problem in this area. Maybe Yugure was worried about them? [break][break]

She would take a leap off a building towards the next one only for her geta to trip her up and she plummeted...into a dumpster. She wasn't hurt but she was stuck! "Help!" she called out to no one in particular, who would even see her here? It was a back alley and it was getting dark.

 street light flickered on. That one was followed by another, then another. Day had fully submitted to the coming of night now. The cold, dark skies ran parallel to the bright radiance of the city below. Tokyo was among the most populated cities in the world, and it showed. 

Farrin continued his patrol, focus narrowed by a keen determination to see the people safe. Yeah, his official practice patrol had ended, and he wasn't technically supposed to go looking for trouble. Still, if he happened to be wandering about the city and saw a dangerous situation stirring - well - it was technically within his authority to intervene now. Right place. Right time. Who was to say otherwise? 

And so, as if deigned by the powers that be, Farrin found trouble. It just wasn't the sort he had expected.

Armored boots slapped onto the building edge, and Farrin planted himself there, eyeing the pedestrians below, when his gaze became fixed on a lone figure—someone stumbling over the edge—literally!

"The feck? Dun' do it!" He shouted, having the wrong idea and leaping in the girl's direction. 

As fast as he was, she was already over the edge and out of sight from this angle. She was partway down a building a few streets over and fell into an alleyway. Farrin bounced about the air and leaped from one building to the next, then trailed the path of descent. Annnnd, found nothing. No splatter. No body. Quirk intervention? 

 "Help!"

Oh. Farrin turned to a dumpster. The hatch was slammed shut tight, like metal bent. This thing was damaged. Soooo, she was stuck. Farrin grabbed at a bar for leverage, then yanked the lid open. 

"Oi! Th'feck was that?" He asked, eyeing the woman for injuries. "Yuh' alright, lass?"

Oh GREAT. Another stupid plan gone wrong and this time Yu wasn't around to help her out. The dumpster lid closing on her just made her groan out loud, unhurt but trapped in a smelly dumpster. "This suuuuucks. This was my only clean shirt!" Damn, Kawahara, why are you so broke? [break][break]

She would move around til she was facing upright...or at least until she thought she was upright she pushed on the lid. Didn't budge, damn. She'd try again, pushing as hard as she could, only to be saved by the kindness of a stranger, which in turn caused her to fall out of the dumpster, nearly face-first onto the ground. [break][break]

"Oh, thank god!" she let out a sigh of relief, tearing up slightly over the stressful situation she 1000% put herself in. It took her a moment to register that there was even someone standing in front of her "Oh! Hi! Were you the one who lifted that?" She would pull herself out and brush herself off, unaware of a banana peel stuck in her hair. "Thank you! I'm Kawahara-...Sparkle!" Nice, I saved it! No way Farrin would be able to figure out her real identity...wait lass? What a weird way to talk. She'd definitely have to ask him about that once he introduced himself.

ell, she appeared to be okay. Farrin was more handyman than hero today, but whatever earned the big bucks (there were no big bucks being earned). "Yup. Saw yuh' take a tumble from a ways away n' came o'er ta' help. The lid was jammed somethin' tight, but glad I could help. That was an accident, right?" She radiated an aura most called clumsy, but that didn't rule out depression. That was a many-masked beast. 

"Nice ta' meet yuh', eh, Sparkle," he started, peeling the banana peel from her hair and tossing it back in the dump. "You can call me Oberon." 

Had he earned the name yet? Trail your fingers across a thousand threads of time, and Farrin was fairly certain you'd find nine hundred and ninety-nine versions of himself that were... less than heroic. He wondered which category he fit into here. But he was trying. Trying to be the best he could be. That counted, right? 

Assuming Sparkle's answer was on the less bleak side, Farrin would follow with another question. "So, what we're yuh' doin' up there then if yuh' no mind me' askin?" 

Some shite luck to trip over the edge of a building. The jury was still out on whether landing in a dumpster was then good or bad luck. A few bumps and bruises may as well have been a miracle, but the girl smelled like rotten eggs left to cook, street side, on a long summer day. Yikes. Well, at least she was okay. That's what's most important.

he was rather chipper for someone who fell off a roof and into the trash. Like a puppy that took a tumble and just kept on running. Farrin was still fitting the situation together, plugging in possible puzzle pieces to make sense of the whole thing, then Sparkle outed herself as a probable vigilante. She didn't even try to hide it. What to do about that? 

"Eh, well, if yer' gonna be venturin' about like that, I'd suggest some proper runners. Sandals are not at all ideal fer' this sorta thing. Speakin o' which, eh, may wanna invest in some proper face wear. Protection n' all that." 

Technically, he hadn't acknowledged her as a vigilante and definitely wasn't suggesting she cover her face to keep her identity a secret. Not at all. This was strictly universal advice that could be applied to just about any neighborhood watch-type organization. What Farrin definitely wouldn't do was draw attention to the fact that he didn't have any meaningful face protection, and instead, he just hoped Sparkle was picking up what he was putting down. 

"Guilty as charged. I'm a hero course student from UA. Doin' me' rounds." 

Certainly guilty in some sense. Again, he wasn't supposed to look for trouble but always seemed to find it. "Are, uh, you new ta' this sorta thing? Fighin' the bads n' all that?" Maybe he should point her Peacekeeper's way? If this was a path she was determined to walk, she could probably use a guide. Until she proved a detriment to those around her, Farrin wouldn't take any action against her. Ideally, crime fighting would be left to heroes and the authorities, but the world was far from ideal still. If her motivations were genuinely good, there was no sense denying the flower some water.

arrin barred his growing disbelief and screwed the bolts locking those bars down tight. Ten years? No way. But... maybe? You shouldn't judge a book by its cover, and yet he was only human. Maybe this book was more of the straightforward sort. 

Well, mama O'Rourke hadn't raised a rude ruffian. Sparkle wanted to show him something and the night's agenda was rather vacant. Farrin leaned low, then leaped up into the air. A firm grip latched onto a windowsill about halfway up the building; then, he threw himself up to the roof.

He landed with the clack of lightly armored boots against the concrete. "So yuh've been doin' this without proper footwear fer' ten years now?" He asked, half ready to lunge when she nearly fell again. Fortunately, she recovered before plunging into the smelly depths below again.

Farrin turned, looking the rooftop over. A mix of exhaust vents and conduits ran across the ground with a stairwell on the far side of the building. That internal radar, intuition, wasn't picking up on any traps. She didn't seem the sort, but then an ambush's lure rarely did. 

Still, Kawahara, or Sparkle, hadn't given him reason to distrust her. So, Farrin found his feet taking him toward the street side of the roof. Stars slowly came to dot the sky, and Tokyo's nightlife came alive. He stood at the edge and watched below as people scrambled home from work or back out for a fun night after putting their hours in. 

"E'er work wit' someone callin 'emselves Peacekeeper?" The question asked before Farrin could even think. The jury was still out on whether or not Sparkle was really a ten-year vet, but you never knew how few degrees of separation might exist.

Maybe he should try to arrest her for her own safety. At this rate, she was going to get herself killed. Farrin approved of vigilantism when executed by professionals. People of strong moral character that didn’t put others in harm's way. In Sparkle’s case… well, she was the others in harm’s way.

“Kinda,” he answered. “They’re the kind ta’ put a stopper on criminals n’ villainy n’ such. Pretty good at it, too.”

He avoided particulars, but maybe he could nudge her in the right direction. Except she was already off in the wrong direction, chasing potential danger—or maybe nothing. Who knew?

espite the fact that Kawahara was older than Farrin, even if he didn't know it, it felt as though he was watching out for some young gunning and reckless teen who was out playing hero. Presumptuous? Probably. You weren't supposed to judge books by the cover, but when the "law enforcement" manual looked like a picture book just recently plucked out of the trash, well, anyone could get a little judgy. 

Farrin sighed when his implication with Peacekeeper hit a wall and flopped uselessly aside. Maybe a more direct approach would—okay but props to Sparkle for that jump. Nimbleness and agility were as worthy as strength and constitution in the field. Why block a hit when you could dodge it altogether? Drawing too strong a conclusion from a singular display was prone to a flawed conclusion, but it became clear she wasn't armed with luck alone. 

Throwing his weight down, Farrin lunged up into the air and landed on the next building. With a slight push from the temporal powers, he picked up the pace and shrunk the distance between them and their target. He dropped below, then cut the man off as Sparkle spoke. He wasn't about to comply, though; that was clear when the man reached into his jacket for something. 

Farrin didn't allow him to respond with a weapon. He flung his arm forward and loosed a band of binding cloth that wrapped around the man's hand, then Farrin yanked it aside, pulling the arm free from his jacket. "Sorry, bud, but I'll need ta' see what you were reachin' fer," Farrin said. The lad had to know it looked like he was reaching for a gun, which would prompt an appropriate response.

The man would speak to Farrin, "Well, well, well, some nosy kids getting involved in an adult business?" He'd suddenly draw the gun and aim for Kawahara. "You can either save your girlfriend or get me!" The weapon would fire a round that looked more like a rocket than anything that slammed into the side of the building, causing Kawahara to begin to fall. "Woah woah, not cool!" She would grip onto a window as her legs dangled in the air "I'm fine go get him!" [break][break]

he math wasn't mathing. Not when plugged into a logical framework. Save Sparkle or apprehend the guilty crook? Maybe under different circumstances, there might be a choice to be made, but here and now, there was only one thread to pull, one route to follow, one realistic possibility before him. And he made it the moment the man pulled the trigger.

Farrin yanked on the binding cloth again, thrusting the criminal forward. One sloppy step followed another as the man was thrown off balance. Farrin spun into a kick that landed against the man's jaw. Using that spinning momentum, he leaped over his own binding cloth, then pulled again. No wiggle room. No escape. The man was reeling back after the kick, then whipped right back Farrin's way only to be met with a hard right shot to the jaw. 

Lights out. He dropped like a sack of bricks. Farrin lobbed another stretch of cloth around the crook's unconscious body, securing him. He kicked the weapon away, then sprinted toward Kawahara. She was still a few stories up. A turn of the wrist and a thin, shimmering field of nearly translucent emerald would form in the shape of a flat rectangle a little below Kawahara. It was like an oddly large, green piece of paper floating in the air.

"If yuh' drop inta' that, yer gonna move slow fer a second, n' I'll be able ta catch yuh pretty easily!" He shouted up at her. 

She wouldn't even realize she was moving slowly if she did pass through the field. It would look instead like the world was moving fast around her. But then, maybe she didn't need the help. She was pretty nimble, moving across the rooftops.
