For a split second she could believe that they both lived normal lives. That they were just going out to the same party together and hanging out like coworkers would. She took another sip of her beer. How many had she been drinking already? Probably more than she should have, but she couldn't help it when he made her nerves go out of control. The alcohol was necessary for her to do what she had to. She pouted behind her beer glass as she took a sip, side-eyeing Momo as she hung off of her Diego's arm. How dare she, she didn't even appreciate him the way she did. It didn't take much to make her jealous, especially not if it had to do with getting Diego's attention. It wasn't that she hated him hanging out with others or anything like that, but she always felt seen and heard by him, even when they were kids. Maybe it was because she missed him a lot more now, or maybe it was just the alcohol acting up, but she was quick to throw herself around his other arm. ''Are you sure, Daigo-kun? You must be hungry after a long day's work.'' She pulled her plate of food over, one order she had gotten ready specifically for him. ''You can have a bite of my onigiri, I'm not tchoo hungry anymore.'' She slurred her words a bit as she smiled up at him. Just then the CEO of the company walked in. ''I'm glad to see that everyone is already enjoying themselves, please continue! Hey waiter, more beer and food this way!'' He laughed jovially before taking a seat at the end of the table next to some people Lucille didn't recognize, maybe investors or business partners? She narrowed her eyes up at the CEO and that's when it hit her. He had totally been drinking from home too! She could recognize the smell of booze and tobacco on him anywhere since he very often got drunk in his office too. It probably looked out of character, but Luci was honed in on the CEO as he began talking on the far side of the table. She still clung to Diego though, she had to take in every second she could get with him. ''The thing is, Nanba-san.'' One of the guys who had a tusk mutation started. ''The landscape of Tokyo is changing all the time. We don't have the insight that you do.''''You're asking me for a favor, then?'' Nanba the CEO of the company poured himself some sake. ''That's right.'' The other guy who had short black hair chimed in. ''How are you planning to invest?''''Mmm... I bet you were all-in on bombs?'' He threw back his head as he downed the sake like a shot of tequila. The two looked at each other before agreeing reluctantly. ''Well my informant says that's a losing strategy. You want to invest in future growth you should put it all on the Silver-Tongued Dragon.''Everyone else at the party seemed too distracted to really pick up on any of this code language, but Luci was immediately catching red flags off the conversation, which only got worse as it continued. ''Really? History had me believe that the Mummy's Curse was a strong contender for the deadliest plague.''''Mummy?!'' Nanba cackled, downing another shot before pointing his glass at his business partner. ''If you're a gambling man! There's nothing stable about Koi's freaks.'' Of the three, the CEO was clearly the least concerned about speaking in vague terms and avoid being caught. Maybe the years he had been getting away with this for left him feeling invincible? Luci spaced out as she parsed through the information. A cryptic conversation that sounded weird to the outside observer, but with the context that this was all villain talk she started to piece it together. They mentioned bombs, undoubtedly referencing Bakuretsu. Something about a Silver-Tongued Dragon being an investment for the future and the most blatantly obvious was Mummy, that smalltime villain that had slowly become a bigger threat to society. Bakuretsu and Mummy... She almost had the full picture, but she had no clue who the Silver-Tongued Dragon was. Ah! She hadn't been recording this conversation at all! Not that it would matter since there was so much noise around them, she wouldn't be able to capture anything from here. Her expression grew more serious as she looked up at Diego. Did he catch what they had been talking about too? Diego Ibarra

''Why... Of course! I would expect nothing less.'' She bowed in kind, hellbent on keeping up her facade and sticking it to him. Bluff? She wasn't bluffing! She was going to commit all the way and show him her determination as a hero. ''Then I will see you there later.'' She managed to keep up the smiles and happy attitude until she got home. She threw her clothes off once she got home and took an angry shower, all the while muttering to herself. ''That stubborn idiot! Why is he always getting in my way.'' She pouted at her own reflection as she dried her hair. ''I'll show him it was a mistake to underestimate me.'' She glared at herself, but then gradually began looking more carefully, making sure she would look her absolute best for him. That expensive perfume she had been saving for a special occasion? You bet she was busting it out today! While she picked out her outfit, she also sent an update back to her superiors. ''Gaining trust with the company, the CEO is starting to let his guard down around me. I believe I'll be able to bring back results very soon.''She neglected to mention anything about Diego, but did it really matter unless he compromised her mission? Besides, if she said that a villain had shown up, odds were that they might try to show up and arrest him, which would ruin their night together. Their night... Wait, she wasn't actually looking forward to going out with a notorious villain was she? She squatted down shamefully in front of her bed, covering her face with her hands. ''Get a grip Luciiii, you can't let your emotions get the best of you... But he's so cute...'' She whined to herself. While she absolutely wanted to bust out her best dress for the party, she also knew that she couldn't show up looking too fancy and risk drawing unnecessary attention to herself. She was just making small talk with Momo when Diego suddenly showed up and her heart damn near leapt right out of her throat. It was seriously so unfair how handsome he looked, how was she supposed to keep her emotions in check, and he was going to sit next to her?? Sh-She wasn't ready! She needed more training, more time to prepare! He smelled so nice she might faint if she didn't keep her wits about her. ''G-Glad to see you made it, Daigo-kun.'' She cleared her throat, trying her best to play off her blush as being due to the alcohol and not because of how irresistibly hot he looked. ''Do you like tea, Daigo-kun?'' She asked after he made his order, just trying to make innocent small talk, but also secretly prodding him for details about his life. Diego Ibarra

Walking the streets of Akihabara in her hero costume, Lucille occasionally smiled and waved at curious civilians as they walked by. So far today's patrol was looking to turn out pretty chill. No crazy villains populating the streets, no horrible experiments being set upon Tokyo and no vigilantes going rogue in broad daylight. ''I feel so lucky that I get to go on patrol with the one and only Fae King. ~'' She smiled over at her partner for today's patrol. ''How have you been lately? I see you on campus all the time, but workdays there are always so busy, I hardly get the opportunity to talk to you.'' It was something she was looking to fix sooner rather than later! Sociable as ever, Lucille wanted nothing more than to make friends wherever she went. As they walked and passed by an alleyway where a stray cat was soaking up some sunrays Lucille gave it a nervous side eye, trying her best not to freak out in front of her colleague, she wanted to make a good first impression after all! ''Wait- you two!'' A voice called out to them as a young man ran up to Sora and Lucille with his phone out. ''You're Fae King and Phantasmagoria, right? Can I take a photo with you?'' Lucille smiled back at the guy warmly, wanting to accept his request, but she decided to let Sora speak for the both of them as she looked over at him. ''I-I'm going to tryout for the hero exams soon!'' The man looked at them with nervous, but hopeful eyes. Sora Lucius

A look of shock came over her as she realized he was right, she had said way too much to the enemy! Curse Diego and the way he could disarm her without even trying! Why was it that he didn't feel like an enemy, even when they fought? ''W-Why else would I be here? You think I go undercover for fun?'' She tried her best to save face by implying that obviously she was here for a good reason, but his point still stood. She was going to think about this one later tonight before falling asleep. How embarrassing... So much careful progress and it was coming crashing down in mere minutes. ''That's rich coming from you, 'Daigo', that's obviously a fake name!'' She would throw a tantrum right then and there if she wasn't still concerned with completing her mission. ''Maybe you should start being a blabbermouth, Diego, or I'll arrest you! I have the authority to do that, so don't mess with me.'' Through their little argument she couldn't help but feel a little happy. She missed all this. Even if they were arguing at each other and tense all the time, getting to talk with Diego was so refreshing. Also what was that he just said, was he also after the CEO? That would explain the fake persona since if he was here to do deals, it would be much easier for him to just go by Diego or Manticora. Her heart skipped a beat when he finally gave his answer. In addition to getting to hear him laugh, he also said a couple of keywords that echoed through her mind and made her grow incredibly flustered. He said he'd love to go... Love to... And he said she had been a great help, she could hardly contain her excitement, but she couldn't afford to lose face here! ''I'm-I'm-I'm glad I could help you!'' She chuckled back, rubbing the back of her neck as her face grew redder than her glasses. This truly was the most cursed dilemma she could have landed herself in. Go drinking and get all buddy buddy with a villain, or lose face and potentially go back to the Heroes Association with no results. He was a villain, but he was also still Diego... No, she couldn't lose this little game of chicken they were doing. Pushing off the table side gently she smiled at Diego and their coworker. ''Shall we get going, then? I'd love nothing more than to have a beer with you Daigo-kun, you can tell me all about your life story.'' And confess to your villainous crimes!! Diego Ibarra

All this careful work being undercover and now it felt like everything was about to blow open because the one variable she didn't know how to handle just strolled right on into the building. She gave Momo an apologetic smile before heading for the break room, feeling like all the eyes of the office were on the both of them. This situation was exactly what she didn't want to happen. The way Diego spoke pretty much confirmed it was him, even if he did make himself sound different she could tell. When he told her she was talking too loudly she pouted, lowering her voice just a bit because she became a little self-conscious. ''I'm talking too loudly? You're the loud one, you're drawing way too much attention to yourself!'' Stop being so handsome was what she couldn't say next. She wasn't any better than the other women in the office, she was the undisputed, number one Diego simp after all. ''For your information, no one has recognized me yet.'' She pushed her glasses up. ''My disguise is working, no one expects a pro to be working at a place like this. It's only because of you that my mission is in danger.'' She crossed her arms and leaned on a nearby table as she furrowed her brow at Diego. ''So what will it be villain, are you going to hand me over to your boss-'' She cut herself off quickly as the sound of the door opening signaled a third party joining the room. ''Is that so?'' She smiled at her coworker, clasping her hands together in kind before looking over at Diego with that same sickeningly sweet smile. ''I think that sounds like fun, Daigo-kun! They say you don't really know your coworkers until you've been out drinking with them. You drink, right?'' To the untrained eye she was just putting on a friendly smile, but she was also feeling smug for dragging Diego into a work party he didn't want any part of. That'd teach him for getting in her way. She was just going to do what she needed to for this social interaction. Feign interest in the new temp worker, be nice to him but keep him at a professional distance like she was everyone else and then get her coffee and get back to work. Well, that's how it would have gone, had she not recognized who it was. She blushed immediately when Diego bowed in front of her. Diego was here??? But why? He wasn't working for the CEO was he? Why the fake name? She had so many questions, but right now she needed to navigate this nightmare. ''H-Have some decency you two.'' She called out Momo and Sayo to try and hide how flustered she was. ''So you're... Daigo-kun?'' She bowed her head at Diego. ''Welcome to the company, I look forward to working with you.'' It had to be him in disguise, there was just no way it wasn't. Judging from his reaction he hadn't expected to see her here either. ''I'm Lucia Albertson, I'm in the secretary's office most of the day so if you need anything that's where you can find me.'' She pushed her glasses up nervously. Her recovery was probably pretty convincing, but inside she was absolutely screaming and sounding every emergency alarm bell. WHY WAS DIEGO HERE??? She hadn't noticed it at first, but Amano had taken a step away while they started talking, giving Diego and Luci some space. Wait... Was she really trying to wingman for her? She looked down at her mug, before smiling back up at Diego. ''I was just on my way to the break room to get some coffee, would you like to accompany me?'' She would drag him if she had to. She needed to know why a villain like him was going undercover in the same company where she was trying to bust a corrupt CEO. Thankfully the break room was empty at this time of day. Walking over to the coffee machine she started it up and put her mug down before turning to face 'Daigo'. ''Okay, what's going on here?'' She asked him firmly with her hands on her hips. ''Why are you here?''Diego Ibarra

''Lucia-san! Lucia-san are you there?''She still had her head buried in work as she worked away at her new undercover office job. The fake name she had chosen to use and respond to was Lucia. ''Hm? What is it Amano-san?'' She smiled up at her coworker, seeing them through the fake glasses she was wearing. ''The new temp just arrived and you're going to like this, he's very handsome.'' Amano smiled, encouraging Lucia to get out of her secretary office so she could come say hi to the new hire. This mission was a bit of a special case for her. The CEO of the company was suspected for not only fraud, but for having secret ties to villains and conducting illegal business on the side. Unfortunately his image was squeaky clean, so to actually arrest and convict him she had gone undercover as his secretary to gather evidence that could be used against him. While working at the company she always had to remind herself of her mission. Remind herself that most of her new, temporary coworkers were all innocent too. None of them knew what their boss was actually doing up top. ''Is that so? ~ I'll be right there.'' She put her work computer in sleep mode before grabbing her coffee mug and walking out the door with Amano. She might as well get herself a new cup of coffee while she was making her way towards the break room. ''What's he like?''''Tall, muscular, he's got a handsome face-''''Those are just traits, what is he like?''''I haven't actually talked to him! I just had to tell you when I saw him come in.''''Why me specifically?''''You're not married right? I-I know it's none of my business, but I just don't understand! You aren't getting any younger either.''''You're starting to sound like my mother.'' Lucille huffed. Diego Ibarra

She blinked her eyes open as she was so rudely awoken from her nap. She was still groggy, but quick to get on her feet and get ready to face whatever company had shown up. Was it more Nomu? The Elementalist himself? Either way she was ready to throw hands and watched in anticipation as something tore through her barrier. Someone she didn't know was on the other side, someone who seemed familiar with Diego. Was he lying about not working alone? ''Who are you?'' She glared at Shurin, her attention moving to whatever device it was he threw her way. Was he going to fight Diego? She couldn't let that happen! Taking a step forward she was about ready to join him by his side when the device started to flare up. That's when it dawned on her what was happening. Shurin was trying to teleport her away again. Take Diego away from her. The light made it impossible for her to run up to Diego as the device was already grabbing ahold of her, but she could still use her voice. ''Diego!!'' She called out. Her heart couldn't bear it anymore, years of regret was spilling over, and she had to get this out now. Otherwise she might never get the chance to. ''I'm sorry I didn't talk to you when I died! I know I must have hurt you really bad, and I regret it! I never intended to hurt you and I don't expect you to forgive me, but I'm sorry, from the bottom of my heart. Because I l-'' In an instant she was transported out of the barrier and to new surroundings. She scrambled back up to her feet and looked around for Diego until she realized he wasn't around anymore. She sniffled and wiped away her tears before taking a deep breath and recentering herself. No more tears, her students and the Heroes Association needed Phantasmagoria, not Lucille. Diego Ibarra

It hurt, it all hurt so much. She worried for her students' safety, worried for her friends and colleagues down below, worried what might happen to Japan if they didn't win this war. Above all else, she worried for Diego. If she ever needed him to comfort her, now was the time, but the Diego she was trapped with wasn't the man she once knew. Not entirely, anyway. ''Bringing you in would be my greatest achievement as a hero.'' She tried her best to hide the fact that she was crying as she spoke. ''I could never top that feat.'' What was more important, love or duty? It was a question she struggled with all the time. She looked up from her wings as he called her out for being a crybaby. Then she heard the sound of his jacket hitting the floor. Turning her quirk off, she leaned over carefully and picked it up. It hurt how much this felt like the past, and yet she knew they couldn't go back to those days. ''Shut up.'' She sniffled quietly, putting his torn jacket on. Anyone else might have been worried about Diego freezing in this scenario, but they had been through this scenario more times than she could count and he always reassured her that he was better at handling the cold than she was. She couldn't see that well in the darkness, but running her fingers over the clothing's texture, for some reason, knowing that this was Diego's jacket and she was wearing it, she couldn't help but feel a little comforted. Whether it was his intention or not, it felt like he had handed her the faintest light in the dark. The faintest glimmer of hope that could pull her out of the dark abyss she was stuck in. Smiling to herself, she held onto the jacket as she closed her eyes. She might as well take his advice and rest up too. The fighting was far from over and she wouldn't have time to get emotional on the battlefield. Diego Ibarra

No matter how much she tried it was like he refused to listen to her. Was she really that horrible, that annoying to him? Even after all these years, didn't he miss those old days like she did? Back when life was easier, when they were both fighting to achieve their dreams, and when they weren't awkwardly sitting away from each other, but could hug and laugh about their circumstances. Was it wrong for her to hold onto the believe that those days hadn't passed yet? That Diego and her could somehow reunite, that there was some way... ''Just because I said all that doesn't mean I gave you permission to call me an idiot.'' She pouted, sending a glare he probably couldn't see in the direction of his voice. She felt another shiver as she curled into herself further. It wasn't exactly freezing temperatures, but between being underground and sitting on a cold floor, it didn't exactly help either. Rather than bother Diego, since he clearly put this much space between them himself, she used her quirk and with a little flutter of her black wings, wrapped herself in a feathery blanket. What he said next hurt her more than she liked to admit. Did he really think she had given up on him? Boyfriend? Husband? There was only room in her heart for one person and he had his back turned to her. He had fallen to darkness and set down a path of villainy. All she could do was stand back and wonder why. She had considered following him many times before too, but she just didn't have it in her to act like a villain. ''I'm not leaving you alone.'' She blinked her eyes and felt a couple of tears trickle down her face. ''Heroes don't just let villains run free so, get used to this.'' She buried her face in her feathers as she felt more tears come out. Hopefully he wouldn't be able to hear that she was quietly sobbing to herself. Diego Ibarra

His chuckle, however brief it was warmed her heart. They used to laugh together all the time, through easy and tough times, at bad jokes and good jokes. She let out a little chuckle herself. ''Yeah...'' She looked off to the side, secretly wishing she could brush her nerves aside and run over to hug him like back then. ''What do you mean?'' She looked up at him, taking in what he had just said one more time. ''Are you working alone? No one else knows you're here?'' Some heroes might have tried to inquire about that to get information on their enemy, but the thought didn't even cross her mind. Her question was asked with sympathy and pity. If he was all alone... Then why walk that path of darkness? He had a great life before, or well, at least a life on the right side of the law. Why throw all that away just to be a lonely villain? It didn't add up. It wasn't right. Someone as funny and handsome as her Diego should be having more friends, even if he was evil! ... Her Diego? ''My comms isn't breaking through to the others.'' She commented after trying one more time before letting out a dejected sigh. Stuck in the most awkward situation with the guy she loved, 11 years ago this would have been heaven on earth to her, but the air between them was so tense. ''Don't say that, that's so sad.'' She was scared that might be the direction his answer was going in. Was there really no way to get through to him? ''You don't have to be like that. There's more ways than just the hero way or the villain way.'' She paused as she realized she was digging a hole for herself. More ways? Like what? After a moment she chimed back in. ''...You could take the Diego way!'' What was the Diego way? Uhhh, that idea was a work in progress! ''What I'm trying to say is don't take all your sorrows in advance.'' It was a Danish idiom her adoptive mother had taught her. Right now the reality was that they were stuck, and Diego wasn't about to retire so... No need to worry about any of that yet. ''You'll call me naive again, but I'm gonna say it anyway.'' She took a breath to relax her mind. She had to look after herself too and make sure she didn't start freaking out from being trapped. ''I believe villains should be allowed to dream too.''Diego Ibarra

''There's a difference between being proud and being arrogant. If you're not careful your head is going to grow so big you won't be able to go anywhere.'' While he was hamming it up, the act was still lost on her and fully convincing. The fact that bits of the old Diego shone through only served to make his betrayal more believable. The idea that somehow the guy she grew up with and thought she knew, the guy she loved, had the capacity to turn to evil all along. It took a hopeless dreamer to think that someone or something had corrupted him, and to cling onto the idea as an excuse. It took an even bigger dreamer to think that he could still be redeemed, that she could still find a way to save him. She couldn't help but feel a bit crammed in these buildings. Half of her quirk was made for flight, but these tight corridors, the small doors and hatches, they put her at a major disadvantage. Every year of her hero training had taught her to beware of villains, to always be on alert around them, but no matter how she tried she just couldn't let go of Diego and see him as fully a villain. Or at least... If any villain had an unfair advantage against her, it was the one who stole her heart and kept it with him. Fear washed over her face for a moment as they were about to get crushed. Diego's gravity was strong, but he was probably exhausted too. She couldn't have known whether he had fought one monster or hundreds of them before they met. Thankfully she had just been healed, and given her quirk plenty of time to rest. If only she was as strong as him... His plan clicked immediately as he mentioned their exam. Without saying another word she got to work creating something like a barrier out of sludge, to the best of her ability. She was a heck of a lot faster and more efficient than she was back then, and she didn't feel sick after the fact either. She braced herself as the walls closed in around them. ''Did... Did it work?'' She opened her eyes carefully, one at a time to look around them. They weren't dead, but the walls weren't backing up either. She let out a relieved sigh and allowed herself to relax for a moment. ''That was close! If you hadn't mentioned the exam I might not have remembered to do that. I never get caught in traps like this.'' Despite their situation, she couldn't help but crack a smile. ''Your reflexes and gravity bought us a lot of time too, maybe you are as tough as you say.'' She teased him, but the smile soon faded when she realized they weren't the same people they were when they were younger. She remembered what it felt like to get stabbed, how the last person she saw was Diego before everything went dark, and how haunted by her murder he looked once she woke up again. She still had her scar from her first death, a shameful reminder that she destroyed everything. She was starting to feel anxious with every glance over at him. She never got to see Diego like this anymore, should she apologize for what she did? But wouldn't that feel tacky? All these years later? She should have handled it better, she shouldn't have tried to play tough. By the time she was ready to cry and open up about her trauma, Diego had already succumbed to his. It was a spur of the moment question, but in her desire to fill the air with anything but awkward silence she spoke up. ''Hey Diego...'' She sat down, curled up into herself to combat the cold chill she was feeling. ''Do you have plans for when you retire?'' She looked at the barrier while she asked him, slowly building up the courage to be able to look at him again. Diego Ibarra

''That's my line!'' Like hell she was going to let him die either! ''You're so infuriating! And you're too proud of your speed and strength!'' She couldn't exactly refute that he was faster than her, so she wasn't even going to. What bothered her way more was the fact that he kept calling her hero, like they were strangers, like they didn't have a shared past, almost as if he was blind to how much she loved him. The thought that maybe he knew and was just stringing her along, using her feelings for him to his advantage she didn't even want to entertain for a second. Diego, the old Diego, he had to be in there somewhere, somehow... When he told her she shouldn't care about him she fell silent, her eyes sad as she looked at the hatch. ''How can you say that with a straight face?'' Her voice was a lot more quiet and meek. ''Of course I care about what happens to you, idiot. I can't just forget what we had like you. I'm not built that way.'' Had she not been old and wise enough to know to keep her emotions in check in enemy territory she might have shed a tear, but she could always hold that back and worry about it later. When she went down first she tried to reach out to Stellar first. There was a lot of static coming through and she wasn't even sure if her voice reached her, but she still tried. ''Stellar? Stellar! If you get this message, I have been warped away from the western quarter, there are students there and they don't have anyone who can guide them can you-'' She grimaced as the static grew too strong, turning her comms off again. She looked to either side of wherever she ended up, making sure the coast was clear before she ushered Diego down. ''Well, at least it looks different from any other path we've tried.''Diego Ibarra

''I can read just fine, thanks.'' She retorted, acting a lot more immature with him that she did in her day to day life. Was it because she still had so much unprocessed grief and so many regrets? She couldn't be sure, but part of her hoped that maybe if she wished hard enough for it, things could go back to the way they once were. ''That's right, and you're only saying that so I'll take my eyes off you. I know what you're capable of Diego.''She raised an eyebrow when he refuted her claim that he didn't think things through. ''And how's that working out for you? I don't see any Elementalist being destroyed, unless you managed to do it before I arrived.'' Somehow he just knew how to push her buttons. ''Y-You..! Communication is our best chance of survival, that's it, I'm just trying to get back to my students and get you thrown in prison.'' She turned her nose up at him and kept walking, completely oblivious to the fact that footsteps were fast approaching them. ''Wah!-'' She let out a small yelp when he grabbed her and pulled her back. His hands on her waist, however brief it was, made her face turn beet red. The last time they clashed they were throwing fists at each other, but to feel his hands like this... It was somehow better than she had imagined, but to feel this way towards a villain?! Her whole heart was rife with conflicting emotions. ''Wh-Who said you could put your hands on me?'' She was right back to hitting him with the weak punches. ''I can fly! Let me scout ahead, they won't see me, I'm fast! You could even join me with your quirk. Or what, is it better to just walk around until we miraculously find what we're looking for? Dieg- ..Villain!'' She stooped to his level and went against her interest to keep calling him Diego. That way he seemed more human and less horrible criminal. However, she wasn't opposed to being petty to get across to him. ''I don't get you.'' She sighed, looking to the side. ''I miss the old you. Before you became like this.''Diego Ibarra
