He felt a little awkward, wondering if the jokes had come off as legitimate criticism. Or maybe she was just nervous, wanting an official internship to go smoothly for her credits. "Don't worry about it!" He waved her concerns off. "Like I said, just don't make a habit of it." Besides, he was curious. As Freja herself even brought up: "Nah. Not many students are too interested in the civil construction side of things. Lots of interest in the equipment manufacturing from the support course, naturally, but that's about it. I get it. If I was training to be a Hero I wouldn't put much thought toward something like this, either."
He'd gesture for her to follow, moving toward some plastic boxes filled with standard safety equipment. "Hard hat, safety goggles, and gloves. I'll show you the procedure for a safe lift too, if you don't know it already. Everyone working here has to wear this stuff, regardless of Quirk or natural ability. Hell I could probably brush off getting hit in the face with a jackhammer, but safety is safety!"
Next stop was the empty patch of foundation, bare ground greeting them. "My grandad always said that Heroes are civil servants first and should strive to improve their community. I don't have too much of an opinion on students who don't speed their free time interning at places like this, but it's nice to see you interested! And UAU provided me with a rough idea of your physical abilities, so I'll push you pretty hard but nothing outrageous. If you ever feel like you're unsafe or unsure doing something, you have the right to say 'no!' and we'll figure something out."

His father had been pretty clear—sit tight and wait for the actual investigators (both private and governmental) to do their jobs. The optics of Tokyo's lead man stumbling around in the dark looking for the missing prototype would send up signal flares. Namely that whatever was taken MUST be top of the line, potentially illegal, or both, and that even if none of the above was true, people would assume. Darius disagreed.
Sitting idle knowing that some sort of Villain or villainous group could be so brazen as to locate and break into the remote storage for the prototype was, in his opinion, the 'bad optics' here. The police and above board PIs they'd invested in to crack the case would go about it entirely clean. Darius decided that being a little morally flexible and forking over some cash to a seedy info broker couldn't hurt. Well. It could, he just chose to think it wouldn't backfire.
He'd dressed casual-formal, with a simple black button up and white khakis, a yellow windbreaker atop it. He wasn't famous enough to catch any eyes unless they'd bought from him personally AND recently, so diving headfirst into a questionable part of town shouldn't be an issue.
The place was pretty deserted, in the twilight zone of sports events and people who'd already gotten smashed. Darius walked in, briskly taking a seat at the counter with a grunt. "Evening."

Right on time. Or course the new wave weren't the active competitors—they were competing. Students filtering through who dropped out or hadn't participated in the ongoing events for one reason or another. From what Darius heard, a lot of freshmen got stage fright from being mixed in with upperclassmen boasting years of experience at Japan's finest school. Hell, he couldn't blame 'em. If he were a student... well, he'd enter, but have no honest hope of actually winning much.
As a few of the latest Heroes in training scoped out the stalls, his attention wandered to a peculiar one. What a funky mutation! Darius put on a grin and walked over. "Only thing you'd be bothering is my boredom. Good riddance to him, I say!" The planty lady asked for some recommendations, with an emphasis that she was new. "Aside from the budget being lower for new students—Ficsit offers discounts for UAU folk, by the by—I wouldn't really say there's ever a piece of gear better suited for a seasoned vet over a trainee. Some people operate just fine with premade options or gear with minor modifications, but if you ask me? The best equipment is something custom built. Made with you and your Quirk and your abilities and habits in mind."
He'd pick up a small pistol-gripped object, brandishing it. "Classic low-level grappling hook. Popular, effective, cheap. Does it's job well! Though just by lookin' at ya—pardon the assumption—I can't picture you swinging from rooftop to rooftop with this thing. Though... We have a LOT of displays here for you UAU students to mess with. How about you give me a general rundown of your Quirk and fighting style or weak areas to see what can be enhanced or patched?"

The UAU Sports Festival was one of the biggest events of the year—especially for a fledgling company like Ficsit with stock in both regular support gear AND now energy drinks and bars. Darius would've preferred to be watching the main events from his TV at home, but setting up on the official grounds was close enough. The FICSIT vendor had about two lots to themselves, showing off some of their quality gear replicas and a tasting section for the edible stuff.
Darius was, officially, there because he was the face of the Tokyo branch and needed to be present for at least some of the festival in person. Building the brand and all that. He didn't really mind the work—showing off to awed passerby and curious Heroes in training was fun, he just wanted to have a full unmitigated viewing experience of the entire festival at home!
A quick check of his watch. There should be another wave of students coming through soon, Darius moving to restock the edibles with fresh stuff from the coolers and touch up any smudges or grime the equipment gathered from being handled by so many people. Hey, if he was gonna do a job, he was gonna do it right!

"Anything that me or the other fellas can do reasonably on their own, we will. The standard issue stuff you saw you front is more streamlined, but commissions are personal—if I was paying extra for something made exactly to my request I'd wanna make damn sure it's made exactly to my request. Its uh, what's the saying? Too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the pot? Something like that.
The initial polymer had started to set, Darius using a small robotic clasper to pull the piece free from the mold before they conjoined. "Ha! Though you're probably bored to tears with all my workshop ramblings. I can assure you that people tend to get punched in the face about as much as they got punched in the gut—that's to say it happens a whole lot. Now obviously if your pair breaks and just he lenses are damaged we can repair it here. I'd recommend ordering a second backup pair to keep somewhere safe in case you can't make time to place a repair request."
The oval, mirrored lens were carefully placed into the semi-hot polymer frame, the material sealing itself around the lens with the residual heat to form a tight seal. Small prongs with nubs stuck out at each side of the pair—no doubt for the elastic band. "Besides the obvious, this will be the breakpoint you have to worry the most about. It'll hold up to your usual wear and tear just fine but a particularly sharp tool, Quirk, or intense heat will ruin the band where it connects with the frame."
Darius tested the weight of the pair, the polymer slightly hot to the touch as he grinned and tossed it toward Calliope. "Try 'em on!"

Late nights sucked sometimes. Not because he minded working, but because most of the busses and subways stopped working past a certain hour—leaving him to walk the way back. Oh well. Extra cardio wouldn't kill him.
Darius wasn't one to break the rules. He enjoyed using his Quirk—but got every chance to do legally whenever he worked a construction site thanks to his license. Sure it wasn't the wholesale freedom to show it off to the public en mass like a Hero, but they were trained professionals! That's the point of having 'em do four years of university. So as much as it ticked him off to be a bystander during a Villain attack, he bit the bullet and called the pros as he was supposed to.
He planned on doing just that, actually, given that a pharmacy he happened to be walking by on the way home was getting robbed. Three men. One with a set of subtle scales and massive muscles, another with a few sharp blades sticking out of their hands, and the last with his hands in his pockets and looking rather unbothered.
Darius grunted, reaching for his phone only for a strange, sudden force to YANK him forward by his clothing. He might've been able to resist it had the engineer not been caught off guard, tumbling through the open doorway and spilling into the floor. "Shit." He cursed in English, rolling to his feet with an unamused glare. Third guy had some kind of telekinesis or pulling Quirk, then.

The sun was bright, the day was young, and Darius was doing what he loved best: legally using his super strength to toss heavy shit around. There was a crew of about a baker's dozen men and women—Mr. Ficsit himself included—hard at work. Splashes of bright yellow from hard hats, gloves, and goggles mixed with the dull white-black aesthetic of the workers' uniforms as they moved like a well oiled machine. Darius was technically foreman given he owned the Tokyo branch of the company, but he preferred getting his hands dirty. He couldn't help as feel he was forgetting something...
With a quick leap off the side, his eye caught on a young woman approaching the job site. ...OH RIGHT!
"You look like you ran all the way here," Darius said jokingly, approaching her and the other worker. "I won't dock you for being a few minutes late, just don't make it a habit, yeah? Wouldn't do us any good if our Heroes always showed up after the fact!" He'd been given a heavily redacted sheet on Freja and any pertinent information and intern-taker would need: namely that she was Quirkless but still boasted EXTRAORDINARY physical conditioning. He wasn't one to judge—Hell he did most of his work without flipping the switch on Power-Weight.
"If we're quick enough, we might even get back on schedule for an early lunch." He winked, thumbing over at a completely vacant part of the building. "You're gonna get the full suite today. Laying the foundation all the way up to running utility lines. Sounds like fun, doesn't it!?"

"I would hope so! I, for one, wouldn't want anyone but an expert touching my critical field gear either." Either the engineer had missed the joke or purposefully ignored it—though given his hyper focused demeanor it was probably the former. "Same privilege extends to your gear, too. Only ones that will be messing with it are you and me." She paid without muss or fuss, Darius giving it a quick count before folding the bills and twisting a rubber band around the roll, tossing it in a nearby drawer. "Very nice!"
"Now that that's all settled, it's time for the fun part: making it!" Not that the creative process would be all that interesting to anyone but a dedicated nerd like Darius. It started with injecting molten polymer into a mold, clearly modeled as the front half of the wraparounds. While the liquid hissed and settled, Ficsit flipped through a few different eyewear materials before settling on a black, slick, glinting lens that reflected the outside world in it's ebony expanse. "Good news is this isn't glass. Means if someone breaks it with a punch or Quirk during combat you don't risk getting a shard sent straight into your eye. You sticking with the mirrored lens?"

"Works for me. I know part of the Hero gig these days is 'branding' and whatever else but I'd rather have a working piece of equipment than a pretty one." With the greenlight to go forward using the schematics, Darius smirked and gestured to a large set of double doors with a massive "5" above them. "Feel free to step on in back with me, then. Low level stuff so all I'll have you wear is some safety goggles and gloves. Should go without saying but please don't touch anything but your own project. Annnd since we've settled on a rough design I can whip you up a quote so you can see the price before I actually make the things. Sound good?"
Unlike the other numbered doors with locked, reinforced frames, Level 5 were a simple set of push bar doors leading into a modest workshop. Strays bits and pieces and unfinished commissions were strewn about separate tables. "Goggles and gloves," Darius directed himself and Calliope to nearby bins to don the safety gear before beelining for an empty table and setting the blueprint into a rectangular marked space. A computer scanner read the schematics information, pulling tools and material he'd need in the creation of Calliope's sunglasses.
"And here's the quote." He tore off a ticket from the printer, the machine calculating based on the materials pulled and the estimated time to completion. "Made sure to remember your discount, though it wasn't too expensive in the first place."

"Well sure. That's basically what a one-way tint is, 'cept with reflection rather than absorption. A single pair of those would work wonders in most situations—but like I warned you, a mirrored or one-way set won't actually help with blinding lights." He leaned against the workbench, spreading out the references pictures and giving them another look over. "Course, your number one worry is making sure your Quirk doesn't activate on accident. If you want to keep it super simple we can just do a single fixed pair."
A fresh blueprint was laid across the bench, Darius leaning over and begining to etch a drawing. "Lightweight. Durable. Comfortable for long periods. Mirrored lens. And if we're already giving it a band to secure it around the head, can just up the elasticity so it's easy to wear and pull off at a moment's notice." He'd nod, tapping the blueprint. "Fair word of warning, FICSIT isn't really a fashion boutique. I can make you something that resembles a sleek pair of wraparounds, but it won't necessarily be the prettiest thing you've ever seen, yeah? Function over form is my personal motto when it comes to designing important equipment like this."
He'd scoop up the reference material and hand it back with a gleaming smile, careful to look at the top of her head rather than her eyes to the best of his ability. "Now that the basic ideas are down I'd need an actual workplace to start messing with concepts. Provided you like the core concepts I listed off, the actual visuals and color are flexible. Since it's a small time project I can bring you back into our Level 5 shop if you'd like. Otherwise I can get some protoypes going and call you back another day."

"Funky? Ha! I'm a proud American at heart!" Darius grinned wife. Lucky that the Japanese for 'American' was pretty phonetically similar to the actual English, as he had assumed Calliope wouldn't speak the language. "So you got a trigger to activate it by locking eyes. Once triggered it maintains the effect until you don't see 'em." Pretty strange logically speaking, but Quirks were quirky! He was blessed with a simplistic Quirk befitting his straightforward mindset.
"Hmm. I get the concern. What about night or dark spaces? If you ever want to not risk a stare in that situation but still actually see, you'd need something like a one-way tint. Buuut that means your sunglasses wouldn't work as sunglasses. It stops light from leaving your eyes, not reaching it. Could make a secondary lens pair to switch between the two. Maybe some kind of built in switch? Eh. More moving parts the more likely something is to break, and this is supposed to be simple. Oh! What about a changeable pair of lenses you can affix manually? Best of both worlds and avoids overcomplicating things."
Darius blinked. "Rambled a bit there. Yeah I can do it. Any of the ideas I pitched sound good to you?"

"Huh? Really? I've felt fine..." Darius' eyebrows furrowed, the cogs in his brain turning slowly. "Ah! If you want sunglasses that probably means having something to do with line of sight. ...But I'm also huge so not sure how you'd have avoided me this whole time!" He would laugh happily. "You can give me the full rundown on your Quirk when we get to the good part."
He'd take the offered documentation as gingerly as a man his size could, giving them a quick glance over before handing them back. "Looks legit. Nice to meet ya, Calliope. I guess if I know your name you should get to know mine—Darius Ficsit!" His chest puffed slightly. "And no sweat on the prices. We're pretty new in Japan still, so getting a good reputation going with the best of the best is only good business!"
At least she came prepared. "Full references? More than most folks come in with!" Darius took a few steps to an open part of the floor, flipping a ground level lever that caused a workbench to rise up, complete with multi light lamps and perfect level. "Let's see... so you're looking for just a durable, comfy, non-slip pair? No extra bells or whistles?" The engineer placed the existing glasses on the table, shining a small laser at the lens. "I assume these work to stop your Quirk from unwanted activation, yeah? Would you happen to know how much tint is needed? Would even a small peak be too much?"

Most of the gear Calliope would pass by looked extremely industrial. Lots of gleaming metal, big, blocky designs, all generally way more utilitarian than most fancified support gear would be. "Well judging by all the crap- er, wonderful products we got in here, I'd say you came to the right place!" He'd pass through the secured, armored door and onto the show room floor proper.
"Hmm? Sunglasses huh? Very nice! You have laser eyes? Spooky stare?" Darius and Calliope would cross paths, the man folding his arms and trying his best to not look terribly intimidating as he towered over her. "Whatever it is, something that simple shouldn't be a sweat. Hey, something that simple? Won't even need proof of licensure or enrollment. Oh!" He snapped his fingers, memory sparking. "Right! You said you came here based on word of mouth from UAU? If you got your I.D. on you we're running student discounts for most levels of equipment."
He glanced around the room proudly, coincidentally having yet to meet the girl's gaze. "We got plenty of tinted goggles around as basic stock, but if you were lookin' for something like sunglasses specifically? That'd have to be a commission." And thank GOD for that. Something to stimulate his brain a little after a long day of playing salesman.
