arrin started up the path. They had a long day ahead of them. It was mountain day. It was an odd holiday, but given its proximity to Farrin's birthday, well, why not take advantage to go for a climb up the famous mountain? In another life, one he only caught snippets of through sifting dreams, he scaled a similar mountain with chains wrapped around his arms and legs. If he could make such an epic climb in another life, he certainly could now. 

He wasn't about to do it alone, though. Since both students were from a foreign land, the States, to be exact, Farrin took Josephine along for yet another off-campus excursion. Hopefully, the day would remain free of any unwanted attacks. He wasn't yet aware of Josephine's true strength or her identity as the Peacekeeper and, therefore, still believed the story she was selling - that she hadn't mustered any insane control over her abilities. 

"C'mon now, we've quite the climb ahead o' us," he said with a smile on his face. "N' thanks fer' venturin' out wit' me again." 

Sparring and training on campus were all well and good. Farrin was a gym rat at heart and loved exercise, but it could get stale, even with UAU's wide array of tools and equipment. A hike like this, though, could work up quite a sweat, especially if he didn't use his quirk much. So, down the trail, they went. 

"So, how're yer' classes n' all comin' along? Any progress wit' yer quirk?" He asked. 

They hadn't shared many classes through the weeks. She had to be making some progress, right? Hopefully, she was a tad more confident in her abilities now, maybe found some new utility use or found another level of strength to it.

This was torture.

Not the climb itself, that would've been simple and if she was Peacekeeper she could've sent herself flying up the side of that mountain with glee, between climbing and swinging. Maybe test out the new slingshot move, launching herself up, and see if she got a handle on her 'wings'. Instead of all that wonderful poignant time, Windy invited Jo, not Peacekeeper, Jo. In other words, Jo had about three more months before she could get up the side of a mountain with semi-challenge allowed.

Right now it had to be a giant challenge.

So using some oil from her hair she was able to get a fake sweat going and was a couple of feet below Windy keeping herself clearly in check.

"No problem, who doesn't love, a good venture? A chance to feel the wind in ya, ya ears and ya body and all that other stuff." Damn it, this was hard. "Ya know school is great, wonderful I'm getting good grades, but ya know I'm in a class where there tryna pull the strength outta me and the hidden potential and all that, but hey I'm able to really 'stick' to these paths and enjoy everything!"

It was only a matter of time now before Jo eventually had to act like she needed a break so for now she just took paces in speech and breaths here and there. Have her chest heave a bit but not too much where it looks like she trying to impress Jesus and everything would be good!

ell, that was good news. Some progress was still progress. Farrin was something of a B-grade student. Not entirely numb-skulled, but he fell short of the true genius. In his heroics classes, though, Farrin was a trailblazer. He aced each exam like few ever had. Heroics was a calling he felt in his heart, in his bones, and apparently, on occasion, across time. 

"Any luck on that front?" Farrin asked as they continued on the trail.

A dirt pathway gave way to stone and overturned logs. The slope grew more treacherous with every passing step. Stones, both large and small, littered the route, forcing the duo to make a climb over. Eventually, the path became strictly uphill. 

"One way er' another, yuh'll get there. No such thing as a quirk incapable o growth. Stick to it n' I know yuh'll see yer abilities improve," he added.

The climb was a nice distraction from the rest of the world. No attacks so far. His life might have been down in that hole, but today wasn't so bad. Day by day, he would make the climb. One climb within. One climb without. Funny how that worked. 

"If yer hairs can grow er' somethin', maybe yuh' should talk ta' Kenta Muruyama, 'nother student in our grade, his quirk is a weird gel he can secrete n' make use o' in a scrap. I know it's no the same as yer' quirk, but might share some overlap er' somethin?" He posed the question. 

Kenta was one of his longtime friends. They met during Hero Prep. He had self-confidence issues, but the lad had a heart of gold. Pairing them up seemed like a recipe for success. Kenta would have another friendly pair of eyes on him, and Josephine could probably pick up a thing or two in the ways of her quirk.

"Well, luck is in an interesting adjective, ya know."

It was tough for Jo, everything inside her was killing the woman to act this 'pathetic'. (Not to mention, the other guy in the back of her head had a monologue ready every time they got home.) It was also crazy, to have her progress going only bit by bit. Slow and steady, and only after that would she be able to show any type of prowess after a couple of months.

It was the idea though and she was sticking to it or at least they had to for the time being. Maybe something big could happen and then she could show a little more but only after she figured out a way to use her quirk that in no way whatsoever looked like Peacekeeper.

So ya know, gonna be a bit before that.

"Kenta Muruyama?" Now that wasn't a name the woman was familiar with, but they seemed friendly enough. The problem was if they had a quirk similar to her own they may be able to realize that this was all one big ruse.

Maybe she was a bit paranoid.

"Well maybe, we can go out one day all three of us together, and think of something ya know!"

ounds like a good plan ta' me," Farrin responded. Josephine wasn't brazen with confidence, but she was hardly the wallflower. Maybe some of that poise would rub off on Kenta. And in turn, Kenta could show Josephine the ropes with his quirk. What Kenta lacked in confidence, he made up for in precision. The might pieces might fit together perfectly, completing their respective puzzles. If not, each would still have met someone reliable. A win - win scenario if he had ever seen one. 

A small boulder blocked the thinning dirt pathway. Maybe the storm that rolled through a few days ago had struck the mountainside and shifted the terrain? Either way, they were going up and over again. The only other option was to scale the far more steep stone wall to their side. No thanks. 

" 'ere we go again," he muttered, throwing one hand onto the boulder and probing it for some purchase. 

A small, flat surface was enough for his fingers to latch onto. Farrin yanked himself up and went searching again. One step at a time he scaled up the boulder until reaching the top. On the other side, something of a small reward. The path turned into a small clearing with more space. Less mountain ridge and more small woods. Water trickled down the bank of a small stream and rolled into the tiny current. Serenity in a snapshot. 

"Aye, come check this out," he shouted down to Josephine. It wasn't their destination. No, Farrin was shooting for the top of the summit, but it was a nice little scene. Maybe it was just his inner Irishman, but Farrin had a soft spot for the earth. For quiet and nature, even if he was a city boy at heart.

When Jo heard something close to the words 'Here we go again' she froze in her spot for a second. A small batch of PTSD hit the woman from the last several months and all that was followed by the sound of buzzsaws whirring or lasers firing or the sound of angry folks screaming while trying to kill her with her quirks. Ya know, the usual stuff that everyone was used to hearing thanks to the antics of the one straight friend.

However, it took her a second to realize that she was NOT peacekeeper, currently she was Jojo and needed to remember that she was very tired from the ongoing hike that was happening right now.

"Okay, one moment," Jo spoke aloud trying to keep her charade going, but honestly it was getting less difficult and more annoying. She may have accidentally got too tired way too quickly, perhaps if she had a drink of water? Jo could 'recover' and gain some of her strength back and after that work her way back down to ohhh I'm so tired weak fragile woman.

Ya know if this fella could read minds there's no way in hell he'd be able to keep the secret on his own side.

So when he asked her to check it out, she took a couple of moments to get there not trying to exaggerate too much, however she had to admit this was worth the look.

The view was beautiful and something that Josephine adored about heights (Which was funny because she used to be deathly terrified). Simply put the views from above were beautiful sights, no one could deny this fact.

"Wow, time to take a mental picture of this one, on a count of my phone is somewhere in the bag, and don't wanna go for that and ruin the moment."

arrin took a moment to take it in. It touched on his inner being, his soul, some might call it. Yup, definitely that inner Irish of his. One with the lands. He took a deep breath before exhaling as Jo climbed up beside him. This wasn't so bad. There was a hole in his being, but exploring his new home with a new friend helped ease the ache that had been growing inside him. 

"Alright, one second," he said, swinging his own bag over his shoulder. Like Josephine, his phone was tucked away. 

Normally, he would have let this scene live in only memory, but taking his own phone out he snapped a picture to send to Sada later. She wasn't here at his side, but he could show her the beautiful things he was seeing. In a way, it would be like she was here. Wishful thinking, maybe, but it helped him to keep going. Then, he pocketed the phone and took another look at the stream, the trees, and the little scene set by nature for the few who chose to ascend the mighty mountain. 

"Had ta' take the pic fer' someone, but I'll send it ta' yuh when we get back ta' campus," he offered, hopping over the boulder and landing at the foot of the stream. "C'mon, we've still a bit o' a climb ahead of us." 

With that, Farrin led the way up the hill against the stream and started back on the path. Eventually, they would pass a torii gate, which marked quite a bit of progress up the mountainside. It wouldn't be too much longer before they reached the summit.

While the moment had indeed been beautiful and in no way was she annoyed by this outing there seemed to have hit a problem in the middle of all off this. The two had hit a lull in the conversation, and to JoJo that was the worst! Could you imagine being the type of person who barely spoke and was always blunt and never tried to actually have a conversation?

They'd be annoying that's what.

So, Jo definitely wasn't going to have this silence take over everything, besides Windy was Irish it wasn't too hard to get them to talk with or without alcohol. Okay maybe that was a little stereotypical, but ya know it wasn't like she was entirely in the wrong.

Only one way to find out.

"So, how about yourself with classes? You seem pretty close to the whole hero aspect of this university at this point I'da figured you had the license and the whole nine by now. Surely you're three-quarters down and only one more to go with how ya been fairing."

There that seemed like a pretty honest question nothing to prying, they were students after all nothing crazy about asking about progress. After all, he had asked her earlier and Jo lied as naturally as breathing but she had a reason.

Jo didn't feel like going back to the States her ex was there.

edge of Farrin's lips curled into the slightest smirk. He took pride in his progress. It justified the decisions made. Sada made him promise to keep studying at UAU rather than tag along so he could achieve his dream, and he was doing exactly that. The temporal thread that was his existence was caught between sunshine and the storm. Dark clouds rolled in from one direction, while supernova strength burned brilliantly and bright in the other. He longed for normal, but he couldn't deny who he was becoming. Oberon. 

"Well, I took the movin' up exam recently. Just waitin' fer the results, but if I passed, I'll be considered a "second-year" student," he started. UAU was a bit different. You could progress at a normal pace, but there was an option to take up moving up exams to climb through the grades all the sooner. Or at least, that's roughly how it was explained to him. "I hold up decently in academics, but I've been landin' top marks across our hero course classes."

The conversation would carry as the two paved their path up the mountainside. Foot by foot, inch by inch, they scaled the famed mountain. They would pass the occasional climbers and others making the trek for mountain day, but luckily, it was far from crowded. Probably for the best, considering how high up they were. 

"Really, I'm jus' waitin' fer em' ta' announce the Provisional License Exam so I can do some real good out there," he would explain as they continued on up. "Yuh' know, be able ta' help people when there's danger without any rules gettin' the way." Josephine might not have known the extent to which Farrin had already warred with criminality, but perhaps there was humor to be found in the fact that one of his greatest allies while taking to the streets was Peacekeeper, even if he didn't know that's who he was talking to.

Yup, there it was Jo's excuse to have a conversation until they got to the top of the mountain or hill, she had no idea when she initially was invited to this they were going to be actually climbing something. Well, technically this was climbing, but ya know she thought it'd be the more traditional form of climbing not the 'climbing'. The only reason this activity got the pass for being called climbing was a bunch of hikers got offended when their outdoorsy energy got challenged by people who ride bikes.

It's a whole thing, there villain back in the States whose thing was the outdoors and explained it once. Okay guy, shame he ended up getting three strikes.

"Well don't let ya academics falter, ya know what they say the paperwork is just as important as the heroing." That was a lie, in no way was that true nor did she believe it. Though due to the situation and her placement within this, the truth is something that can only be spoken sparingly here and there.

"The provisional huh, if you had never told me Ida assumed you already passed those with flying colors. It's good of you to wait to help until you pass those exams, a lot of people try to take the law into their own hands and that's simply not right, like we have rules vigilantes. Life ain't a comic book."

At this point on top of her slight breathing hitches here and there remembering to keep up with them, she also had to speak like one of those protestors back in the States. Knowing the truth in the back of her head with all these past misadventures they had she almost felt bile coming up with those words.

Again though, these are things the civilians say, or at the least the civilians who had blogs.

arrin had to bite back a laugh when Jo mentioned the importance of academics. Yes, knowing one's maths, language skills, sciences, and all the rest was important. You never knew, well, what you needed to know and how it might factor into the interplay of quirks, or just life in general. But at the end of the day Farrin needed to know best how to use his powers to secure the innocent and defeat the malicious. If he could swoop in fast enough to clear the block of innocent bystanders and the injured, then come about and detain the bads, he would call it doing a good job. 

"Eh, I ne'er was the best in school," traditional schooling, he meant, but she would likely get it. Though to be honest, Farrin's traditional schooling had quite the gap. Seven years homeless and living on the streets would do that to you. He had to catch up fast when the folks at Above & Beyond brought him over to Japan. "But, I give it what I got. Won't let it me' grades there slip up." I'm just more focused on the hero work, he didn't say.  

It was a long climb, a mix of actual rock climbing due to interruptions along the main path, and some more relaxed paces taken along the parts still intact. Eventually, though, they neared the mountain's peak. The topic of vigilantism eventually sprung up, though, which was a little odd. Or maybe less so than Farrin thought, given his current company's secret.  

"Eh. Hero society is rooted in vigilantism," he started, considering his words and holding them against his feelings, making sure it all lined up. "I agree in that I do believe, one day, it would be best if e'eryone lookin' ta' defend the people were licensed. But, we dun' live in an ideal world. Quirks only emerged some fifty years ago. We're all still tryin' ta' figure out what's right n' wrong n' how best ta' protect people. While I dun' condone it, I can understand the appeal o' voidin' all the red tape. I dun' agree wit' it entirely, but if the person knows what they're doin', are skilled enough not ta' hurt the wrong people, n' have the right intentions, I feel they deserve some leniency n' understandin'. Illegal is illegal ta' be certain, but if I see one person illegally defendin' people n' one illegally attackin' 'em, I know who I'm goin' after." 

It was true. He wasn't the biggest fan of vigilantism. If everyone ran around enforcing their own flavor of justice, the world would be in utter chaos. But there was no denying heroism's roots. And if there was a skilled vigilante who was only doing what they believed was right, and that didn't entail hurting the innocent, he wasn't going to put the effort into chasing them as he would a real deal criminal. All that conversation would come to fade, though, as they finally reached Fuji's peak. And into the crater, his eyes wandered. 

"Would yuh' look at that," he said, eyeing the expanse of once-volcanic stone. Maybe it didn't appear to be all that much at first glance, but when one considered where they stood and what they were seeing, a certain appreciation was bound to bloom.

The path up was nothing too crazy, if anything the only real crazy part she had to keep reminding herself about was to take breaks, take out the water bottle, and take a drink here and there. Hell, she almost went a little too far and poured water on herself, but that might been too much stimulation for the Irish or god forbid whoever this woman he always spoke about planted a camera on him. The last thing she needed was to break up another relationship with a free-spirited straight and possession woman.

For the record, that story will never be told, the last thing she needed was more judgment from Windy.

It was interesting to hear his take on the vigi lifestyle when he was speaking to someone not covered in a full bodysuit made from hair. Though it was fair to say his words were very similar to what he had spoken to the vigilante he had worked with over these past couple of months. Maybe it would be okay to reveal-

"No." The other voice immediately interrupted and ended the moment she was having with herself. Unforunately, he wasn't wrong, trusting heroes only goes so well until it doesn't anymore. Next thing ya know they got a fancy raise and you gotta move out of L.A. because you thought trust was the smart thing to do with someone who has a literal badge and job depending on people like you going to jail.

Ah well, comes with this life.

Finally after so long the view could finally be taken in and again Jojo made no effort for trying to bring out her phone, instead a lovely mental picture was taken. Something she'd keep with herself for a very long time unless something else comes along and kicks it out of her data bank.
