ell that hadn't taken long. Not ten seconds into the match, one of the competitors found themselves on an unfortunate drop tile and plummeted below. High-power safety fans or no, that had to be terrifying. Farrin could air step his way down... or back up if he fell to such a fate, but he didn't intend on falling. While misfortune had claimed one, it turned a blind eye to another. Namely, Farrin, who leaped up into the air and snatched up the first of his water balloons.



"Can others pop these things?" He asked himself before turning to face the others.

They couldn't attack each other directly, but attacking a balloon wasn't a direct attack. None appeared to have such a tactic in mind quite yet. Most were shuffling about the hexagonal arena, eyes either on the floor ahead of them, watching for any sign of a trick tile, or up above, watching for more water balloons. 

Farrin's eyes, glowing with the touch of time, bounced between the floor below him and the water balloons ahead. His boot was planted firmly on a trick tile. It dropped, but the boy was already gone, ten steps ahead and closing on his second balloon. He could reach the opposite end of the arena, where there were fewer contestants to contend with before the others. That was the plan. Occupy the emptiest spaces, navigate between the others, and snatch up every point he could.

Nothing represented UAU better than a challenge that screwed over the Quirkless.

That was where Elijah's mindset was at as he flexed his prosthetic removed of its usual tooling. Energies from within and natural wings so some competitors could fly around with ease, yet he couldn't so much as utilize a grappling hook. He sighed. Weaker than his peers, as usual.

Elijah focused on the task regardless. He didn't hold the trepidation others had with the crumbling arena, swiftly catching balloons in his basket while avoiding the spills and holes that were beginning to litter the area. Careful steps, but not too careful. Hesitation will be his downfall here.

A wayward question entered his ears. The time-turner asked no one in particular but Elijah answered anyway. "I imagine not. Observe." He drew a dagger from his vest, so primitive that he was allowed to have some, and launched it at an oncoming balloon.

It popped, pouring water over an unsuspecting student's head. The heat he emitted cause steam to rise. "Hey! You're gonna pay for that!" And while forgetting the rules in the heat of the moment, the student pointed his open palm Elijah's way, his hand glowing before a laser shot out.

The sophomore sidestepped it, letting it pass him and continue its course towards Farrin.

arrin's eyes narrowed. His fist clenched, prepared to whip a field into being, but otherwise, he was willing to play along. Elijah's knife burst the balloon, and the other student was soaked. It would be a lie to say some small part of Farrin didn't want to laugh. It wasn't against the rules. Instant karma, even for a thought. 

Had he known what Elijah had planned, Farrin might have been able to muster up a temporal deceleration field on time to defend against the attack. Lasers, like actual speed-of-light lasers and those quirks that could create them, operated at levels even his time-turned speed couldn't counter. They required preemptive action, like dodging just before the shot was fired or summoning a deceleration field beforehand. So, the best Farrin could do was turn as Elijah moved to take the shot in place of his balloon. 

Farrin flew several meters, the top half of his body turned over so he took the beam on his ribs and just below the shoulder, like he was cradling a baby. He spun out and then slammed against the tile floor. Pain burst below his arm and clenched his jaw. No hero outfit. No extra protection. He was in his gym uniform, and that beam seared. 

"Oh, a feckin' smart one are yuh," he cursed through grit teeth. 

Farrin picked himself up and put the still-intact balloon in his basket. Yeah, that's right, the balloon is still safe, arsehole. Farrin stood, and the tile fell. Or began to. Farrin felt the sudden shift, the split-second drop that brought the flooring down a fraction of an inch, giving faster students the slightest chance to escape. Farrin qualified. He jumped up, snatching a second balloon out of the air, then slammed back on the ground. This tile was safe. His side felt like it was on fire, but his face was framed in a smirk. Two balloons down, even after foul play.

Elijah didn't know Farrin well, but from what little he's seen of the man during the challenge, he was fast. Could clear distances with ease, letting him speed away from the tiles long before they could even begin to fall. Didn't seem capable of flight so while the challenge wouldn't be a cakewalk for him, he still had things easy.

His reaction time didn't seem to be as quick though. Go figure.

As the student responsible for the beam was pulled away from the arena, Elijah glanced at other sophomore's scorched clothes before rolling his eyes. "Direct your annoyance to that person. It's not like I planned for them to throw the competition." Seriously, who knew one pop was all it took for someone to forget the rules? It certainly wasn't his problem.

Elijah returned his focus to catching balloons, brows furrowed in concentration as he noted something else. He didn't seem to be the only one to find loopholes. Students were starting to aim attacks on the ground, breaking parts the stage early. He had to preemptively jump to avoid the loss of flooring.

At the rate they were going, there may be no ground left to stand on soon.

 suspicious brow rose. Maybe he knew the kid was prone to overreact. Maybe he didn't. Either way, it had cost Farrin precious seconds and nerves that felt like microwaved popcorn. Outrunning sound was quite a claim to fame. Outrunning light? Short of some godly speed quirk that put chronokinesis to shame, one would need to become energy to manage that feat.

"Water world!" One student shouted from the center of the arena. 

Was it a supermove? Farrin slung the basket over his shoulder and backpedaled a few steps. There were still enough balloons to snatch, but a supermove might spell game over for the unprepared. He wouldn't count himself among their ranks. This time, Farrin was ready. 

True to the move's name, the student spat an endless geyser into the air and spewed water across almost two-thirds of the remaining tiles. Some of the others slipped and fell. Where some of the contestants were attacking the tiles outright, others like the water-boy over here made their passing untenable. 

Farrin leaped back onto another tile that began to drop, then jumped again landing on more solid footing. People were more problematic than the actual obstacles, and maybe that was the point. Still, he had a job to do. Farrin lunged into the air and snatched a third balloon, swiftly tucking it into the basket. 

Another interesting tactic caught his attention. One girl used her quirk to rein in the winds and muster a current that blew more balloons to the safety of an uncompromised tile. There was no replicating that with chronokinesis, but Farrin wasn't without his own advantages. He had mobility few of the others could match. Another leap, and he was off to snatch some more balloons out of the air.

Swift, but methodical. That was how Elijah was tackling this challenge. Catching the balloons while keeping his existing ones safe was difficult; he clicked his tongue whenever one fell out of his basket due to landing too hard or some other maneuver. And before he could recover it, it would slide along the floor before dropping off into the abyss below. Well, not an actual abyss but you get the idea.

Sticking to the goal was all he could do though. Balloon catching. Obstacle avoiding. It wasn't like he could do much else when he couldn't target the other students, nor did he have the means to affect an area in a way others could. Like that one person making the geyser and spilling water everywhere.

Ah, crap.

Elijah was among those caught in the wave, the water sweeping him off his feet and carrying him toward the edge. He had no way to slow down. Not without compromising his points. His eyes were instead trained on the ground ahead until-

He caught the side of the panel with his prosthetic hand, basket clutched tightly in the other as he dangled above his surefire way to lose.

Great. This is just- great.

here were fewer tiles than empty spaces now. Farrin blurred across the arena and took any opportunity that presented itself. For instance, when the girl from earlier whirled another dozen balloons together, Farrin helped himself to nearly half. His basket was filled to the brim. The clearest path to victory meant denying others the ability to score by popping the balloons. That didn't constitute a direct attack on any of the contestants. 

But that just wasn't who Farrin was. He swept across the field, air stepping when necessary to avoid the wet tiles, and continued gathering balloons. Fire and starlight cut through the air, others catching onto the strategy he denied himself. His basket swayed with the water balloons within, packed to the very top. It would have been all too easy to smash any remaining balloon he came across to deny others their fair shot, but Farrin wouldn't play like Rahul had in their shared challenge. He wouldn't rob the others of their chance but would rather stand out despite their best efforts. 

He saw the lad from earlier dangling over the edge of a tile. Had equipment been allowed, he might have pulled him up with his new binding cloth. Saving the competition wouldn't have been the smartest move, but it felt wrong to let him hang. So, Farrin circled around the intact part of the arena. If he hadn't managed to pull himself up soon, the time-turner might lend a hand. Only maybe, though. It was still a competition, after all, and plenty of the others had already flown over the edge.

Elijah half-expected someone to save him.

The university was full of altruists; people who would lend a hand without hesitation, even when doing so would cost them their standing in the competition. It was a trademark held by many heroes. Why even be here if you didn't have the drive to help others?

When no one came to his rescue, there was a sigh of what could almost be relief. Either he was so invisible that no one noticed his plight - a trait he favoured as someone who wanted to work underground in the future - or winning was more important to these contestants. At least they had their head in the game. It meant he wasn't wrong for doing the same.

Elijah swung his basket over first, letting it rest on the ledge. Then, momentarily letting go of it, he gripped on the edge with both hands. He pulled himself up.

Only to watch someone with wings slam down on the ground, a gust of wind spreading outward from their person.

A move of some sort? Similar to the water. The dreaded student was in no position to evade it, not from where he was. Unless... Well. It was either that or fail.

With a grit of his teeth, Elijah took his basket of balloons and sunk into the floor.

ell, at least one obstacle had sorted itself out. Farrin had rounded the remainder of the arena and closed in on Elijah’s position. But, before his assistance became necessary, the lad pulled himself up. Then sank down to the ground as a gust blew from another student’s landing.

While the water within weighed the balloons slightly, the whirlwind threatened to tip a few from Farrin’s basket. He mustered a deceleration field around the balloons at the top, slowing them before they fell overboard. They acted as a wall against those below as well.

Time had nearly run out. Farrin only needed to maintain his score to claim one of the top placements of the challenge. There was no telling how many other students had topped out on balloons, but his basket couldn't really fit anymore.

The winged student turned and flapped away, her mighty mutation stirring up hurricane winds. Another deceleration field formed ahead of Farrin, like a large wall, slowing the gust as it passed through. But Farrin was still swept away.

“Shite, shite, shite,” he repeated, physically pushed back by the winds, and even his fields no longer holding his basket still.

Three balloons were swept into the winds, Farrin whirling beside them. He grabbed one almost instantly, lobbing it back into his basket. The winds ceased, but the balloons were rolling toward the edge of the tile. The air burst as he raced across the short distance, then lunged. The balloons fell over the edge.

Then they froze.

One last field slowed their fall enough so that Farrin could lean over the side and grab onto them. He drew himself back up and threw them into the basket. The winged fury was flying his way, eyeing the time-turner like prey. Before she could muster another storm, though, a massive bell rang loudly, signaling the end of the challenge.

“Phew,” Farrin exhaled, sweat pouring over his brow. He had his balloons and, hopefully, a strong placement with them.

When using his Quirk to hide instead of move, Elijah would count the seconds he was under. It was the only thing he could do beyond feeling the panel shake with each attack against it. And hope it wouldn't break or fall while he was inside. Ten seconds. Twenty. Thirty. He let himself sit for a minute before escaping.

There was no signal when Elijah appeared again. The only way he could know the challenge ended was by seeing several people lay on the floor, exhausted from giving their all. Dual coloured eyes would land on each, counting the remaining bodies. Among them was the fast one. His balloons threatened to spill from his basket with how high they were stacked, so he wouldn't be surprised if he was near the top, if not first place.

Elijah looked at his own. Not nearly as many balloons were inside. It would probably put him in the middle of the standings. He sighed.
