merica's favorite pastime. A hundred years later, it was still as popular as ever. And not just back home but out here, across the world, as well. How baseball had survived the advent of quirks, Farrin wasn't sure, but back in New York, he snuck his way into more than a few Yankee games. He wasn't a massive fan, but a younger time-turner couldn't help but be curious.

Back then, he would speed up the absurdly expensive, multilevel parking lot behind the stadium, leap from one roof to the other, and descend to the nosebleed seats. Some nights, he even explored the innards of the building, checking out the 000 level, where the players hung out. Fancy stuff. Thankfully, he wasn't spending any money to be there. 

"Right then, thanks," he offered one of the event organizers who had just handed him a baseball bat.  

There were myriad challenges awaiting him within the Sports Festival's main arena, but outside, there were more traditional sports being played. He wasn't due up inside the main arena for a few hours, so how could the New York native turn down a baseball game? Somewhere, deep down, he had to show some pride in his home's favorite sport. Well, technically, he was born in Ireland, but he was raised in the U.S. for most of his life. New York was home. So, yeah, baseball. Wait, could these bats take the kind of pitches a quirk could dish out?

[Futaba Tamashiro]

HoloStar was one of the corporate sponsors of the many activities during the UAU sport festival. One of the big events HoloStar was hosting a baseball game from the Nippon Professional Baseball on the campus field. It had been a yearly tradition now and usually featured a big lead up events. Special karaoke streams, concerts, merch drops, and whatever else the talents cook up. Often HoloStars sets up batting cages for casual use and also as a competition. The person with the highest score at the batting cages would get a VIP Baseball experience at the upcoming game. Other prices include merchandise from the NBL and HoloStars.

The individual talents would work at the different batting cages and cheer on the participants. It also acted as a random meet and greet. The talents would be on a large screen next, sort of next to the batting cage. It was protected by the netting so no mishit ball would hit the screen. Most talents were a at their usual streaming rigs and were just live streaming to the screen. Depending on where they are streaming from, the delay was barely noticeable.

Futaba was streaming from her friends apartment from Toyko so it wouldn't be super delayed. Futaba congratulated the last contestant and signed a little card via a wireless signing machine. After this was concluded, she waited for the next contestant to enter who happened to be a student she had interacted with before.

"Hello there! I'm Momo from HoloStar's Momo and the Golden Horns! I'm here to cheer you on and help you do your best at our little contest that we are hosting!" Farrin might be able to recognise her voice to some extent but Futaba did sound slightly differently compared to when she would interact with students at the library. Farrin wouldn't probably recognise her based on her model unless he somehow heard Freja talking to Futaba a year or so ago.

arrin was suited up in his gym uniform, chewing a stick of gum, and even threw a blue cap on over his brown mane. Play wasn't much in his wheelhouse. The days were dotted with classes and training, and the countless hours of night were populated with, well, more training. HIs dorm was a depressing place these past few months. Lifeless and cold, without the warmth he dearly missed. Maybe an hour or two each week was allocated to the rudimentary gaming setup in his room and a few more hours spent sleeping, but otherwise, he was always out and about. 

Today, though, he was in character. If he was going to play some baseball, even if only batting in the cages, he would play it right. He grabbed a bat from the rack and approached one of the vacant cages. The large screen framed behind the actual cage and net was odd, the young student unfamiliar its function until he made out the virtual figure. And, holy shite, it spoke. 

"Oi heya, Momo," he responded, spinning the bat a few times before taking up a proper batter's position. He hadn't expected to be watched, but how hard could this really be? "Dun' know much 'bout the contest, but I plan on hittin some dingers." 

Regurgitated baseball lingo. Basically, he was swinging for what would be some strong homeruns on a proper field. Earlier worries melted away as it became clear a machine would be spitting the ball his way rather than another person. A green light appeared, and an elongated tube fired the first ball. 

Farrin's eyes flared, and though the ball was moving like a speedy twenty-year-old behind the wheel on a highway, to Farrin, it looked like the old granny holding up traffic. He smacked the ball, full force but at an odd angle. The ball rocketed, but it would have been a foul. 

"Well, heh, we'll get there," he added with some jest.

Well, this is going to be fun. She wasn't worried about being detected, rather it would be keeping a conversation with Farrin. He looked like he was more interested in baseball rather than HoloStars. It shouldn't be too much of a issue though. If he was interested in the baseball aspects, he probably was interested in some of the baseball prices. "Well, we at HoloStars have partnered with the NBL so we are hosting a batting cage contest!" As soon as Futaba said this, a logo splashed across the screen, showing off the NBL, HoloStar and UAU.

"Basically we are using technology provided by NBL and its partners like Hojo to rate your contact, power, exit velocity and potential distance of the baseball you hit! The better you do in each category, the more points you earn!" Futaba said excitedly before adding "The more points your earn, the better prizes are eligible to earn!" A small list shot in front of the screen, appearing as if Futaba's model was holding it.

"Our top price is a VIP experience for a NBL championship game!" There were some other prizes listed like merch, CDs, etc. "Good luck!"

h, a contest yuh' say," Farrin chirped, a smile crawling across his face. Stoke the fires of competition! Farrin knew his greatest sin to be that of pride. But, well-regulated pride was a good thing. It brewed confidence and reinforced one's self-worth, stimulated action when fear threatened with hesitation and stillness. In this particular instance, it meant Farrin really wanted first place. It didn't matter what the prize was.  

"Contact, power, exit velocity, and potential distance," he repeated, the smile still framing his face as the launcher fired again. 

Farrin swung, full force, and the smack of the bat against the ball boomed through the field. Another baseball blasting off again. Wait, would that have been another foul? For all of Farrin's power, and despite his place of upbringing, he actually wasn't all that familiar with the rules, which could prove to be quite problematic. Well, he would undoubtedly score well in most of the listed domains, at least. 

"Well, I dun' know how I'd do in a real game, but I know I can hit the thing hard," he huffed with a chuckle. "So, how'm I doin' so far?" There were others with quirks that would make them great for the game, and this competition, but Farrin carried both speed and power behind his swing, he just wasn't exactly sure which hits would count in a real game. Hopefully he was still scoring well for the competition so far. Baseball game and a hotdog maybe? Now that would be a taste of home.

Futaba watched Farrin swing the bat, the little point tally appearing on her her second screen. He was doing well on some of the categories but his predicted direction was letting him down. He was still racking up points but he probably wouldn't win the first prize. That wouldn't be announced to the end of the competition until Sports Festival was done but certain prizes would be given out already. After Farrin finished, Futaba clapped enthusiastically before checking on the prizes that Farrin was eligible for.

"So, you did pretty well! You are currently in the top 10% of scorers! This makes you eligible for a 30% discount on any tickets for a Youmiuri Giants game of your choice! You also receive free concessions up to 4800 Yen! That can be used on merchandise for the team, food, etc!" Farrin didn't do too bad so he was getting a pretty generous prize. There were also a couple prizes he could chose from for just participating.

"And for participating today, you get the following!" Futaba would say before a baseball card of her came out from the bottom of the screen. It was her dressed in the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters Home uniform with her little signature at the bottom of her name "Momo" with a little trumpet drawn next to it.

"You also receive a 20% discount code on merch on the merchandise tent from HoloStars. It's right in front of the batting cages! Just say 'The Golden Bazookas sent you!'" Futaba paused before adding, "Before you go, do you have any questions for me. This does serve as a more casual meet and greet for fans of HoloStars as well!" Futaba forgot how more energetic she was when she wasn't working in the library. It is rather funny to her.

orry, Momo, but not really, no," Farrin answered. He wasn't sure what to ask to begin with. Memories flashed like film behind his eyes. Shadowboxing up atop his hill at the back of UAU's training fields. His nightly sprints along the track. And, of course, more heroics classes. There wasn't much web surfing beyond happenings in Eastern Europe, where he last knew Sada to be. 

"I 'preciate all the help n' explanations though. I really jus' came ta' park take in the game a bit, had a grand time I did, so all the rest is icin' on the cake." 

Farrin took the card and looked it over. A little reminder of a day all his own. Not the hero-to-be, Oberon, but Farrin's. He would have to find Freja somewhere in all the mess that was the Sports Festival. She would knock this particular competition out of the park.

"It was a pleasure meetin yuh' though, er', well, meetin yuh' over dis' thing 'ere. N' thanks again fer' the info n' prizes. Maybe I'll be able ta' make it ta' one o' em Giants games." 

'The golden bazookas sent you,' easy enough to remember. Farrin wasn't at all familiar with vtube culture, but that didn't mean there was nothing of interest to be found at the merch stand. You never know what you might find. All in all, a successful outing before the games began in earnest inside the festival arena. There, only first place would do. 

"Alrighty, Momo, I'll be headin' out now. Hope yuh' have a grand day!"

And with that, Farrin was off.
