BALLOON BONANZA

It is not enough that I should win but others should lose.

I’m not that egotistical. My victory is unimportant. The sports festival provides no tangible benefit for someone looking to exploit the system with the least amount of effort possible. Simply passing is enough. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enroll in a few challenges to study the notable figures of UAU. And in this case, I’d be doing more than studying. I was here to actively impede Farrin.

You see, his father killed my parents. Granted, his father also killed his mother. We had something in common. But if quirks are genetic who’s to say dispositions can’t be transferred from father to son? If we were both in Japan, then there was always the risk that he’d lose his mind, too. And if he were to rampage then civilians be damned… but could I keep those I care about safe?

Maybe, I’m poking the bear. Maybe, I care more about his bloodline than I’d like to admit. But the damage is done. The event is almost over and at this point, he must know that I’ve been tanking his score. My bunnies continue to drag green balloons in front of Farrin’s targets. And to everyone’s surprise, the great Oberon, the shining star of UAU, is the only one with a score in the negatives.

he little feckers just keep getting in his way. Farrin's framed in a scowl. He recognized the little slags from the Beta Blitz exercise a few weeks back. Their owner, however, was mostly an unknown variable. What was his feckin' issue? No matter the potential threat Farrin posed, this was excessive. 

The Sports Festival represented an opportunity to display one's capabilities to the world. Farrin wasn't trading for fame, but recognition would open more doors for him. Maybe even an internship with Sterling Soul, one of the nation's most prominent hero figures. There was always Above & Beyond agency, the lads over there always had his back, but the more varied his experiences, the better. Farrin had been knocking it out of the park for most of his challenges, but now this eejit was actin' a maggot to keep him down. 

"Right," Farrin sneered.

He jumped, then kicked off the air itself. Skywalking, Miroru had called it. Aptly named. Farrin first created a deceleration field around the air just below his boot. It only lasted a split second, but the slowing effect turned the air into something like a semi-solid. Then, using an acceleration field around the boot itself, his kick created a force with an equal but opposite reaction that gave him lift. In effect, he could walk through the air. And, once above the battlefield, it was time to play dirty himself. 

Farrin aimed below with his linear cannons and let loose. Adhesive rounds that bypassed red balloons, earning him a few points, then slapped into the ground, releasing their gooey contents, which would catch some of the rabbits bouncing about below and keep them still. He wasn't taking a leading score, but the time-turner would not be staying in the negative for long.

To further clarify: I don’t want him to fail.

Opposition defines a hero. The real world offers nuance that the academy never could. For all of its preparation, hypotheticals, and resources, order cannot manufacture chaos. Betrayal stings. As Moltke said, ‘No plan survives contact with the enemy.’ But how will Farrin react when his plans come in contact with me; a fellow student?

Or better yet… how will I react when the incompetent soon-to-be-dropouts hinder me? Someone intercept the green balloons unintentionally. They were trying to take the lead by popping 5 balloons at once only to lose their progress by popping 2 greens. Another in the negatives. Farrin isn’t last.

I catch a glimpse of his reactions. He knows what I’ve been doing but instead of confronting me he doubles-down at the task at hand. Oberon doesn’t seem to shy from confrontation, but with the cameras watching out every move, he might be concerned with his brand. Or perhaps, it was pride.

Nonetheless, with 7 balloons popped splashing the students with honey as another balloon let out hornets. Honey-loving hornets. Great.

tubbronness. It flows more freely than blood through Farrin's veins. He was going to make it. He was going to win. Build as many walls as you like. He would break them all down. 

The winds whipped against Farrin's fall. The cost of skywalking would quickly outweigh the benefits. Prolonged use was reserved for flying opposition. Farrin never stopped firing, though. Chronokinesis latched onto the six-second fall and stretched the thread out to something that felt more like a minute to its master. 

Two more red balloons broken. Five. Seven. Farrin's score raced up the board. When his armored boots clapped against the ground, he was out of the negatives. And yet, the total pool was shrinking, and he wasn't anywhere close to the top. This was a sprint, not a marathon. 

A gilded stare sifted through the field for Rahul, the builder erecting all the obstacles Farrin had faced. "Ah shite," he cursed, eyeing the swarm. Hornets. He hadn't been one of the unfortunates frowned upon by fate and slathered in honey, but that didn't eliminate the threat. You couldn't really box a hornet. Well, he could, given that they flew so slowly in his eyes, but come on, there was feckin' swarm of them, and that would take time. Instead, Farrin took advantage of the chaos... threw some gas on that fire. 

The time-turner took shots at the red balloons near the mess of stingers and honey. The nearby students would be preoccupied with vacating the area—a few free points for Farrin. Moreover, some of those red balloons contained extra surprises. Two burst into clouds of white smoke which expanded outward, obscuring everyone's vision- all the easier to hit a green balloon by mistake. A third spilled a glue, not unlike Farrin's adhesives, onto the ground. This might have been a boon, especially when added to the aforementioned adhesives Farrin fired earlier, but he wasn't safe from the smoke cloud and the additional challenge it introduced... or the dwindling number of balloons.

Honey fell.

And when it rains, it pours. I was surrounded by a cacophony of coughs and yelps from students in the white, billowing smoke. With glue on their soles and wasps at their heels, they had fallen victim to their mediocrity. There is little difference between us. But no matter how small the gap, there was an infinite distance between Achilles and the tortoise. What brought them to their knees was nothing more than a mild inconvenience.

A burrow of bunnies roamed the battlefield. Those outside the smoke were mindful enough to stay outside the smoke. Sharing a few glances, I’d dispel one for its intel and stumbled upon a fun, little fact.

Once the wasps escaped the smoke, they did not re-enter. A few desperately flew in my direction, only to be met with intermittent black smog — a death flag. They learned to fear the blue eyes that peered through it.

In the meanwhile I left Farrin to his devices. What was important was gathering another green balloon. As hard as he may try, he’d never make it to the top of the list. And if he were to somehow find himself proud of the work he’s done, I’d part ways reminding him of a cruel, unjust world.

tudents circled the last of the balloons like vultures. There were only so many reds left, only so many points to go around. And between the participants and their prey were myriad obstacles. Farrin swatted on such an obstacle aside. Then another. And another. The honey splatter hadn't caught him, but like a bull against the cape, Farrin charged whatever red targets remained, even if the bulk of them floated among the hornets. 

With a skip and a hop, he dodged the mess of glue and honey beneath his feet, wading through the haze, and charged ahead. The smoky veil saved the balloons from a ranged assault, too great a risk of hitting an unseen green balloon behind his intended target, which meant getting up close. Fists flew like bullets, and each balloon burst with a satisfying pop. A slow-mo Joe punch wouldn't likely do more than send a soaring, but not when hit at this speed. 

Still, the math wasn't adding up. While others competed for those few remaining targets outside the smokescreen, Farrin bounced back and forth within. There was less competition, but even then, it was clear the challenge was drawing to a close. Each balloon broken was another grain of sand falling down the hourglass. 

"The feck is his problem?" Farrin asked himself.

If the hare-brained punk hadn't had it out for him, Farrin would've easily topped the leaderboard. Instead, he was clawing his way up to a mediocre score. "Every moment counts," he continued. An affirmation. No time to dwell on the whys; he could only concern himself with how to climb higher. So, Farrin darted into the thickest of the white smog and went hunting.

For one reason or another the balloons gathered within the smoke. Whether it was ordained by the physics of the universe or the intentional use of someone’s quirk — whether the proctor’s or my peers — the final encounter would take place within the vapors. By this point I regained my footing. I was greeted by my bunnies and a green balloon. I saw the fruits of my labor ripen as I plucked it from their teeth, marching towards Farrin.

My scouts were imbued with an order: detonate. When they saw Farrin, they’d disperse into black smog, transferring his exact location. In the meanwhile, I hid within the smoke. A few other students were desperately trying to gather as many points as they could. A few tried to break out of the negatives. Others fought for the top three. Farrin was the only one here fighting for a mediocre score. I succumbed to schadenfreude-derived euphoria. He was nothing.

When he took aim at the final red balloon, the green would rise from below, intercepting his blow. It wouldn’t stop the red from popping, but it’d make his final, valiant effort futile as he limped across the finish line.

arrin's heart galloped. He boomed through the battlefield, his explosive bounds whirling the winds every which way, blowing out the thick clouds that obscured all sight. The smog didn't relent entirely, but the air had cleared enough that color returned to balloon silhouettes. With that, he could make use of his linear cannons. 

One crack of the cannon's fire and another point was added to his score. Two more points were added a moment later. Five. Then the black smoke rose, the devil's blood mixed into the white haze. It wasn't only the color that differed, but the proximity. Farrin didn't see any of the black smog in the distance. It was distinctly trailing him, rising wherever he went. 

Farrin looked to his feet and therein lay the problem. The rabbits. It was him again. He employed a similar maneuver back at beta, albeit on a larger scale. Farrin's lips curled into an even deeper scowl. He had half a mind to knock the taste out of the lad's mouth.

No time. Farrin beamed across the field again, popping as many balloons as he could find until only one remained. Another crack as he fired his cannons. His score rose by one last point, but only after dropping ten, negating so much of the effort he had just put into the exercise. Another feckin green balloon was placed in his path. He didn't need to guess by who. The smoke was all but fully abated now. His placement was only just above the middlemost rank. Useless. The challenge would prove nothing to those outside. 

Farrin's hand curled into a fist. He saw the lad and was just about ready to have words. But what was the point? Farrin loosed his balled-up anger back into an open palm. In dampening Farrin's placement, Rahul had neglected his own. Whatever drove a hero-prospect to devote themselves to impeding one particular peer, even at their own detriment, came from a twisted, broken place. There were other challenges ahead, challenges Farrin wouldn't lose.

The smoke dispersed. The glue dissolved. The wasps were captured. The event had come to an end as everyone’s scores etched themselves in the annals of Sports Festival history. And for all the talk of the great Oberon, for all the praise he received not just for his quirk but his work ethic, he’d be remembered as nothing more than ‘average.’ Fitting. An analysis of one’s potential could never account for the harshest realities of all — other people. He would do fine as a hero. He’d be great, even. And perhaps I had only heard the whispers of the unimpressive echo across the hall of UAU… but Oberon would never be the number one hero.

I can see his frustration. I almost wish I could hold back my smile. But I don’t and I didn’t. My eyes look at the rankings and see his middling score. I don’t need to look for my name. It’s near the bottom only above the few failures who reached the negatives. 0 points.

I never intended to score a point.
