She intended to participate in every event and it was clear that some events were made to favor certain quirks. An arena in the sky where you had to catch falling objects? Clearly being able to fly or jump put you at a large advantage, of which Ylva had neither. She would look around at her competition, noting that most of them either had wings or some support equipment that was made for flight. [break][break]

She, of course, didn't have anything of the sort, opting to leave her battle armor behind as she didn't want something bulky to slow her down. Not that it mattered much when she could just pop other's balloons remotely; that was if they were able to gather them in the first place without her intentional interference.[break][break]

Ah, the Sports Festival. She'd seen a few of the previous years' festivals online and ever since then was dying to participate. Just the announcement that it was starting soon was all that was needed to send her into a frenzy of preparation! Now, however, she was in the arena, standing where her specified starting position would be. There were several other students in the arena; many with wings, and others likely with some form of quirk to enable mobility but one stood out. A second year, one she recognized but had never met, was also standing in the arena. What was her name again?

Julienne's eyes had locked onto Ylva, a light spark of intelligence flickered behind her eyes as she tried to figure out just what they were going to do in this competition. 'I don't think I ever heard her name... was it Elvis? That can't be right, she certainly doesn't look like an Elvis. Did she even have a quirk that allowed flight? Maybe...' Stop contemplating! Get your head in the game! Slapping both hands onto her cheeks, she rubbed her face rapidly before jumping a few times, and beginning what looked like combat stretches. It was a last-ditch effort before the challenge actually started, and she needed to be extra limber to be successful. Even while stretching her eyes repeatedly darted over to the 2nd year student. Something was off, almost as if she was the biggest threat here and not the other students that could fly.

Once everyone in the arena was set in their spots, Julienne's stretching would change to cycling air through her quirk; it wasn't enough to cause her to hover, yet, but she was basically jumpstarting her jet engines. The plan was simple. Use her sudden bursts of speed to catch balloons, and return them to her basket. That can't be hard, right?

[attr="class","nikki109"]Whether it was because of her reputation she gained at Shiketsu's Sports Festival during her first and only year there or if it was because of her lack of identifying features that would give her an advantage in this event. Ultimately it didn't matter as she made eye contact with Julienne she wouldn't emote any further, focusing on the countdown for the event to begin. [break][break]

As the timer ticked down and the alarm rang out indicating the start unlike everyone else who immediately jumped into action, she waited. The water balloons began to rain down over the area, and with the sensory aspect of her quirk, she could keep track of where the balloons were falling remotely. She may not have been able to attack people directly so her first act was to freeze the water in a few balloons before they could be grabbed causing them to fall to the ground and shatter while she grabbed as many as she could that came in her general direction. She didn't need to be the fastest, she just had to make sure others wouldn't get a chance to gather more than her.[break][break]

The moment the alarm started, a high-pitched whistle filled the air from Julienne's direction. Water balloons began falling from the sky, landing literally everywhere. Many of the other students were much faster than she was at taking flight, but that was because they didn't have nearly the same difficulty as she did. Aim. It was her biggest enemy when using her quirk in the way she was planning. As soon as the whistle hit its peak, Julienne blasted off of the ground, arms outstretched aiming to catch a few of the water balloons. Even though the other flying students beat her off of the ground, she certainly beat them to the balloons.

Unfortunately for Julienne, she was not the brightest lightbulb of the four-pack. Her arm curled around one of the water balloons, but Newton's law of motion made sure she wouldn't keep it. All of the force from her body impacted the balloon, detonating it almost immediately as the water exploded outward in all directions. More whistling sounds could be heard as the girl re-oriented herself, and collided with even more balloons, one after another. It almost looked like she wasn't attempting to catch them.

In her own mind, however, her brain was racing to try to solve the dilemma. How could she get to the water balloons first without detonating them? Was it her arm's surface area? Would she need to stop below the balloon and catch it? But then if she started boosting certainly the forces would cause it to explode once again...

Julienne was in a dilemma, and she needed to figure it out fast. In the meantime, she seemed to intercept most of the balloons from the other flyers that were in her vicinity.

Ylva's tactic was working and drew the anger of many of the participants. Some stared daggers at her, and others straight up told her how messed up she was, but she paid it no mind. Winning was all that mattered, otherwise she'd be letting down her parents. There was nothing else to consider. [break][break]

A few people were participating who were either too quick or had something to deal with Ylva's abilities so between her methods of sabotage she would collect balloons by freezing and accelerating them to the ground before the others could grab them and tossed them in her basket. When she tried with another set, the girl who had stared at her earlier slammed into them before she could even freeze them to begin with, popping them on the spot.[break][break]

Splat, Sploosh. Another balloon loses it's life from Julienne's explosive speed. 'This wasn't working,' the girl thought to herself, decelerating rapidly into a hover. Staring down and around at the arena, she watched as Ylva shattered the balloons of others, and other times, increase the speed of the balloons by freezing them. Perhaps... that would be her ticket to getting score? No, she saw how Ylva was sabotaging others; now was not the time to create a new enemy. Slowing down might be the key; it'll take effort and control, and won't be perfect, but if she risks missing the balloons, she might be able to catch them without the explosion.

Now that she was sitting still, the water that had soaked her from the several balloons she detonated already started to seep from her gym uniform, and onto her skin. With the airflow flowing as fast as it was, the droplets of water seemed determined to enter her engines; "Not today, water!" she exclaimed to deaf ears as she ignited once more, darting back towards her own basket. There were a few water balloons still falling that she could potentially nab, which she not-so-gracefully beelined for.

Sending out a single blast of air to slow herself down, she turned off her engines just below the water balloon. Entering a slower free-fall than the water balloon, she shot out a hand to catch it quickly before reactivating her engines. With one hand holding her objective, she could only use one of her thrusters to fly. Luckily for her, flying one-handed wasn't so bad if you were taking your time. Sadly, she didn't have that option.

Clumsily dive bombing towards her basket, she spun, and dropped the balloon from just a few feet above the basket before taking off to the air again; the wind from her flying by sliding the basket a few inches, but it still remaining where it was. "Alright, I can do that again!" She reassured herself, speaking aloud just to hear her thoughts from the deafening engine.

Instead of collecting from further areas, she planned on collecting nearby, at least until she caught up. The second was just as easy to grab as the first, and the third... even easier. Unfortunately another flying student beat her to the fourth and fifth ones that she was able to reach, which meant she may need to push forward and declare war on the icy ground student sooner than she wanted...

In a battle of attrition, Ylva was confident she wouldn't lose.[break][break]

After collecting about a dozen herself and stopping others from doing the same, most either choose one or two paths. They either moved outside of her perceived range of influence, which in reality was the whole arena, or they chose to challenge her directly and be more aggressive in their tactics. Unfortunately for the latter, it wasn't exactly that easy given the clause of not being able to attack each other directly.[break][break]



Gathering another to bring her total to 13 her eyes would narrow. Something about the one from earlier was unsettling and while she wasn't exactly a threat at the moment, she had begun to slowly move towards Ylva's territory.[break][break]

and If she was smart she would make a turn around.

Two more balloons were missed as she darted around trying to gather from under the noses of other contestants. It was strange, at the start of the round everyone seemed to be neatly spread across the arena, but now? Everyone was avoiding that ice witch, it seemed, and because of it, Julienne was finding it nearly impossible to catch balloons with her previously successful tactic of simply slowing down below them, and letting them land in her arms. No, this wouldn't stand. She refused to get last place with a measly three gathered.

It was time for war.

Spinning around, she blitzed into Ylva's territory. She was sure that her speed would let her reach the frozen balloons faster before they landed, and with them being frozen solid, she was certainly going to be able to hit them full speed without breaking the balloon. Surely, the ice might hurt when being slammed into, but that was something she would learn.

Circling overhead for a few seconds, her eyes locked onto her victim; wherever Ylva looked, she assumed that was where the next balloon would be frozen, and eventually... well she had to do it eventually. The moment a balloon solidified, Julienne would dive bomb it, hooking whatever balloon was being frozen into her arms; with hands crossing in front of herself, any frozen balloon would collide with her chest and get trapped in the x-shaped cage. As long as she just kept flying without stopping, she could easily maneuver around.

Now, the only problem, was if she had collected multiple... how was she going to deposit them back home?

Well this one had guts that was for sure. Ylva always expected a negative reaction to her actions since, in her eyes no one understood how important it was to her to reach the top of the hero world. Well, it was important to her AND her family but that was another story for another day. [break][break]

Guts, however, didn't mean that she was making a smart decision. Ylva would stop her assault after she observed Julienne snipe a balloon at a higher speed than she'd seen from most of the competitors. Ylva's instinct was just to freeze the area but that pesky rule about not attacking others directly. So, after observing Julienne's tactics, she opted for a different approach - a feint.[break][break]



Ylva didn't actually need to direct her hands to use her quirk she just did so as it helped her focus. So, as Julienne sniped a few balloons, she targeted another one as bait, freezing it as it began to fall faster. Assuming she went for it Ylva would release her frozen hold, causing the ice to turn back to water. At best it would give her an opening to grab more and at worst it would take Julienne out of the fight entirely. They had less than 60 seconds left before the event was over so there wasn't much more room for error.[break][break]

Just as planned! Her target froze a balloon and Julienne's jets roared even louder to life. With one gigantic curve, Julienne whipped around and flew right at the frozen balloon at a nearly insane level of speed before... CRACK! She collided with the frozen balloon, cracking the ice but also sending a sharp pain up her arms. That certainly would leave a mark... It stung, but wasn't broken at least; if it was she would have certain noticed as she held her arms together around the balloon rocketing back to her basket.

Quickly now! You need to get back before too many balloons fall! Spinning as she flew, she powered off her thrusters and fired backward to slow herself down as she descended, dive bombing her basket as she had the frozen balloon earlier. Releasing the balloon from only a few feet away, she practically laid the balloon in the basket along with the others, clacking as it landed at the bottom of. Without a second thought, she wheeled around and started heading back towards Ylva, who now, had her eyes on her from her previous actions.

Not realizing that she was about to be tricked, Julienne didn't hesitate to go right for the next balloon that Ylva was about to freeze. Accelerating even faster towards it, the balloon began to freeze, and then quickly reverted. "W-HA" Throwing her arms forward, she fired thrusters to slow herself down until... splat! Water balloon to the face! If one could see a replay of what happened in slow motion, it would have been plastered across the internet as an epic fail for all to see!

Distorting around her face, the balloon nearly wrapped entirely around her head before suddenly... detonating. As the water dispersed in all directions, it practically turned into a mist before Julienne spiraled out of the sky, making a rather harsh landing near right near Ylva. It wasn't that she landed on her back or anything, the girl managed to end up on her feet which likely impressed the spectators if they had been focusing on the duel that had started... but she shot her eyes up in a glare at Ylva.

Deceipt. How unfair. She was so far behind in score with her measly 4 while that white haired witch was standing there with a largely filled basket. The water had soaked through Julienne's gym uniform, dripping profusely with water as her engines had been severely dampened. Locking eyes with Ylva, her glare intensified before darting her eyes upward to see the next balloon.

Engines activating, she fired a thrust to try to launch at it; if she started now, it wouldn't detonate even with the speed she would achieve. Roaring wind once again filled the air around her, until suddenly her engines sputtered and gave way. Her body moved a few inches towards the balloon before dropping her out of the air; it was as if she simply jumped and stumbled.

"No, no, no, no!" Julienne's expression looked panicked. Was she out of fuel, or was it the water causing misfired? She attempted to fire off her engines once more, but this time it was sputtering immediately. "Damnit..." she cursed under her breath, shaking her arms to try to throw off as much water as possible before throwing open her engines full blast with wind; she didn't hover, no, instead the wind just flowed through her arms without being impeded.

Julienne started the process of drying her engines, but with such little time left on the clock... she was doomed.

What an idiot. Anyone worth their salt could figure out that this was a trap, and more than that, when she had made eye contact with Julienne, she had expected her to pick up on her deceit. It worked like a charm as Julienne collided with the water and came flying in her direction. A few steps to the left to make sure she didn't land on Ylva and she would go back to focusing on collecting more and more balloons. [break][break]

As the timer started to count down from 30 seconds left, she would briefly make eye contact with Julienne again before refocusing on the task at hand. She had nothing to say to her or anyone, it was their fault they got in her way. Should have just stayed outside of the circle like all the others. Collecting the last of her balloons the alarm would sound indicating the exercise was over and Ylva would wait to hear her placement before moving on. She wasn't here to make friends, she was going to win it all.[break][break]

Instantly her engines died as she slammed the ground with her fist in anger; right underneath the balloon she was aiming for as it splatted across her back, soaking her engines again. "DAMNIT!" Shaking her head, she stood up, dusted herself off, and began her angry walk of shame back to her basked; air blowing through her engines once so that she could dry her back properly. With one glance back, she glared at Ylva. She lost, horribly.
