When Ylva was determined to make a name for herself at the Sports Festival, she meant it. The intermission they would get for events meant that the students participating were free to explore the rest of the festival and encouraged to interact with the rest of the civilians. In fact a certain counselor told Ylva to volunteer at a local sweets shop to bring in business as "A great student like you will help the business!" Normally, it is not something Ylva would have indulged, but she believed that if she really wanted to make a good impression she had to do it.[break][break]

Which is how she ended up at the sweets emporium.[break][break]

Owned by a local who competed against another business Ylva was surprised that they set up their stalls directly across from each other. Nonetheless, she would do her job, packaging boxes of treats for anyone who came by but absolutely not giving service with a smile. If only she could get into the arena with the students. She dreamed of the elation she would feel stabbing one of those students to death in front of the whole world. What kind of notoriety would that give her? Something next level for sure. Maybe next year she could find a way in. Instead, this year she was relegated to volunteering just to get a little close to the action. Looking over at the person opposite her, Rui perked up as she noticed her direct business competitor was that ice bestie again. Immediately she wanted to leap over the counter and stab her, but she knew that wouldn't end well. Besides, she hadn't snuck any weapons into this event. Then, an idea struck.

If she couldn't crush her in combat, maybe she could crush her in capitalism? Capitalism and run this booth so hard that Ylva gets no customers and would have to break down crying in failure. Not the same as killing her, but an acceptable alternative! She was staring daggers at the hero student until a customer approached her own stand. ''Hi welcome hi!!'' She smiled, following their instructions and packing them a box of candy. Mummy wouldn't be caught dead following orders, but she could b surprisingly cooperative if it was all for a greater good. A greater good of making hero students cry. ''Hey you! Have you tried smiling? People would like you more if you smiled!'' She shouted at Ylva. It was just a jabbing taunt, she wasn't going to start by pulling out the big guns.

Ylva had been so focused on her work she didn't realize Rui was working the stall across from them until she spoke up. Her eyes narrowed and her brow furled wondering how such an unpleasant person managed to get a temporary job here. Irony at its finest "People are here for good service; they don't care if you smile." Ylva was competent and began to pick up the pace of packaging sweets, with some of the people in line at Rui's stand enjoying the show and switching to her competitor. [break][break]


She may not have cared about the outcome of this volunteer work but she'd be damned if she let this gremlin get one over on her. Doing her best to show as much "care" as she could she would speak up "I'll help you all in a minute. Take a look at what you want and I'll be prepackaging some sweets." ''That's only what a non-smiler would say, non-smiler!'' She shouted it like it was a scathing insult. She stood there smiling like an idiot for a few seconds waiting for Ylva's response, only to realize she was getting back to work. She wasn't going to let the cold bestie beat her, she was going to package 50 times as fast as her! Ylva wasn't ready for this, no one could resist the charm of Rui Matsui, especially not the people of Tokyo! If only she had remembered to shower that day, or the day before that, or the day before that. Rui didn't know why, but for some reason customers were backing away from her stand and going to Ylva's instead. She wasn't even smiling like Rui was! Complete bullshit, absolutely rigged by the Heroes Association.

Fortunately, Rui had prepared a box of goods to help her sabotage the competition for just such an occasion, starting by putting on a t-shirt. A t-shirt? How bad could that be? How could that possibly get to Ylva? Easy! It wasn't just any t-shirt. It was a t-shirt with text that read 'I'm with stupid' and an arrow pointing up. Up because it was pointing across from Rui and over at Ylva, the stupid idiot standing opposite her. What Rui didn't realize was that the t-shirt could also be read as her declaring herself stupid, which was much more likely given the lacking context potential customers would have. Somehow, Ylva kept getting customers instead of her. ''It's not a competition by the way! Our candy is better!'' She shouted over at Ylva.

Ugh this was the worst. Working with people was the worst. Talking to people was the worst. She didn't mean working hard but she preferred to do it alone and with the little devil over there she was getting more and more customers. Still, she had found a good way to blow off steam, which was to taunt Rui whenever she ran into her...which was a lot.[break][break]

"You're right. This is no competition." She would gesture to the much longer line she had. Taking down orders and having them ready at lightning-fast speeds. She'd raise an eyebrow at Rui's new outfit. From her perspective it looked like an attempt at self-deprecation, but she knew Rui was too dumb to realize that. She'd stop for a moment looking across the way "Nice shirt."[break][break]

''Yeah you like it? Probably because you can't read otherwise you'd know it's pointing at you!'' She laughed a little too loud, scaring away a couple more prospective customers. ''It's not competition when I'm beating you, and I'm not even trying, bestie!'' She was using one of her favorite techniques, Reality Denial. It meant completely disregarding everything Ylva was doing better than her, in favor of just praising herself and inflating her own ego through delusions of grandeur. Not that she was out of tricks either. Rui took a step away from her booth to not sell candy, but instead signal over a group of kids.

For a money bribe she handed them a tray of eggs and told them to go throw them at Ylva's booth. Rui could get kicked out for it, but these kids? They would probably just get a slap on the wrist if they were caught and Ylva would never guess that her... One business competitor... Was behind the deliberate sabotage.

The kids all laughing together came charging out and immediately started throwing eggs at Ylva's stand, much to the dismay of the crowd around them. Meanwhile Rui was laughing her ass off from over in her booth. ''Oh no! That's really unlucky for you that you got attacked, bestie! Watch out or you'll get egged!'' She continued laughing, slapping the table and eventually collapsing onto her back and rolling around on the ground.

Ylva would hand another customer their order and then deliberately look at Rui's empty line. She was delusional and giving the weakest attempt at gaslighting that anyone with eyes could see was false. Whoever raised her babied her that was for sure, or at least they didn't do a good enough job disciplining her unlike her father and mother. [break][break]

"Not trying is correct." She would point back and forth with the disparity of their lines and then, happy to have made a point, she went back to organizing orders. After a few minutes of not hearing from Rui, she took a glance over to see her pop back up with an undeserved smug look on her face. The only person with a dumber face was the world's biggest nerd, Andy...and then Khepri, but that thing wasn't human, so it didn't count.[break][break]


Ylva could sense something was up with a group rapidly approaching them and when the eggs flew on the stand she realized why Rui had been so smug about it. That smugness, however, was about to change. "We have a problem." The owner of the stand would coming running from the back beet red and tear into the kids and then cross to the other stand to talk to Rui's boss. "HEY!" Rui's boss would come yelling "I only hired you because you claimed to be an expert saleswoman, don't mess with other stands! Go clean it up or you're fired!" the owner would thrust a wash rag and a bucket towards Rui, expecting her to get over there and clean up the mess she created.[break][break]

What a wonderful sight it was to see her business competitor undone by eggs. Now her stand was going to be stinking up even worse than Rui's and once it was fully covered no one was going to want to do business with them anymore! A devious, flawless plan and it couldn't be traced back to her. That was exactly why they called Rui the genius villain, or rather would very soon once she convinced enough villains to get onboard with that. Her intellect was unmatched there was just lots and lots of people that didn't know it yet!

Not trying? She didn't even have to anymore when the ship she was competing with had been hit and was sinking beneath the waves. ''Huh?'' Wait a second, she wasn't the boss of this stand! She was just an employee! ''I am an expert!'' She continued lying, raising her voice higher than her boss's because that's how you won arguments. ''This is absurd I didn't even do anything!'' She stomped once, putting her foot down, but due to her lightweight it barely made a sound. ''She gave us money.'' One of the kids pointed at her, sobbing. ''You little snitch, how dare you rat me out!!'' If she had her knife with her it would be stabby times right about now. Was she going to get found out by heroes if she stayed any longer? Perhaps it was time for her to make her exit. ''You clean it up yourself, you old fart!'' She tossed the rag back at her boss and dumped the bucket on the ground. ''I'm done! You're stupid, charity is stupid, candy is stupid, heroes are stupid.'' She stormed out, turned and pointed at Ylva. ''She's a loser with no friends, I'm gonna come back with a weapon and kill all of you.''

Ylva would pause the line to watch the scene unfold before her. She didn't have to convince those waiting to be patient as they were more interested than she was. She expected a tantrum to break out and right on cue, Rui had a meltdown. She was definitely entertaining to the crowd and perhaps if she had done something like this to begin with she wouldn't have lost. [break][break]

She lost to Ylva who doesn't like people and didn't want to be there. Yikes.[break][break]

"You probably shouldn't have said that part out loud." Ylva would point to the security now headed down to deal with the commotion "Don't need friends. I don't want them. Good luck." With the guards at full alert, they were now running towards Rui, shouting, "Stop! We have some questioning for you! Come quietly!" They would chase after the fleeing Rui and the opposing shop owner bowed in apology to both Ylva's boss and herself, then ordered the kids who egged the place to help clean up. [break][break]

This whole experience and Rui were exhausting.[break][break]
