ightning struck. A lightbulb flicked on. An idea was had. Pick any of the above, the point is Farrin had an idea! And now he was roaming the Support Lab halls in search of the trusty engineer and designer extraordinaire, Kei Hada. He hadn't seen the lad in quite a while, but they were in separate courses, so it made some sense, at least. 

At time-turned speeds, it didn't take long to find Kei in one of the many labs. A weekday evening meant most classes were over, and Kei was as dedicated to his craft as Farrin was to training. Curiosity gripped Farrin, and he watched as Kei went about his work, but when the lad seemed to take a step back, the hero-student would make himself known. It is best not to come barging in and startle the engineer when he was tinkering with something potentially dangerous. 

"Oi, hey there, lad. Long time no see," he said, starting into the room. "How's the craic?" A pause followed, swift realization striking Farrin's mind. He still pulled the Irish lingo out pretty often, but only Sada, Kenta, and a few other folks like those at Above & Beyond really knew what he was asking. "I mean, erm, how's it goin?" 

Small talk and its rather low ranking on Farrin's specialties was a topic he looped back to each time he and Kei met up, but in this instance, it came from genuine curiosity. Though they weren't "hanging out all the time" type buddies, Kei was of the good sort or seemed as much, and Farrin trusted his gut regarding those judgments.

Another day cleared of lectures, and Kei was in the lab once again. For good reason this time. He didn't hole himself up in the workshop just because he wanted to like usual. This time the Sports Festival was coming up, so he needed his mind to stay sharp if he was to keep up with the rest of his peers.

He stood back with arms on his hips, admiring his work and considering calling off for the day when a familiar voice reached him. Kei turned to him and smiled. "Farrin, hey! It's good to see ya!" His brow furrowed, puzzled. "Crack? There's no crack-" He focused back on his project and squinted at it. Even walked closer and lifted it up - a sphere, its use difficult to discern from appearance alone - to turn it in various angles just to make sure that, no, there were no signs of breakage anywhere on the item.

It wasn't until the time-turner's correction registered that he paused, blinking. "Oh." He placed the device down. "It's goin' good! I'm just cleanin' up." Kei patted the top the orb. "You can go now." Said orb did a sequence of beeps before it bounded off the table, and he watched as it rolled along the floor to reach its charging station at the side of the room.

With that done, he turned his attention to Farrin and smiled. "What about you? Is there somethin' I can do for ya?"

arrin eyed the little machine as it rolled away. "W-was that thing 'ere last time I was around?" he asked. Definitely not, right? He would have remembered a little robo-roller bounding about when Kei helped him with the cannons. It wasn't pertinent information, but curiosity and all that. Clearly, Kei had been busy. 

"Anyways, yeah, I wanted ta' ask yuh' fer some help wit' some new kit."

Farrin stepped further into the room, approaching the workstation Kei was standing near, and pulled out his phone. His finger danced across the screen, bringing up a video of UAU's own Ms. Mai, or Yuki Onna if going by her pro-hero name, apprehending a criminal with her many scarves. It was her own variation of the binding cloth style of combat, which wasn't entirely unseen in hero society but certainly required no small amount of skill to utilize. 

"I was wonderin' if yuh' could whip up some bindin' cloth fer' me? I've a bunch o' bands n' belts wrapped 'round me arms I've used as cuffs on criminals when on patrol er ta' apply pressure ta' wounds which got me thinkin, 'why no' integrate it inta me arsenal? I've the cannons yuh' made fer' long range, n' me mitts fer' close," he eyed a clenched fist before unclenching it, "but some bindin' cloth could be used ta' apprehend the lower level dimwits quickly er' close distance on the stronger crooks." 

He would need to train in this new binding cloth style, of course, but Farrin prided himself on being something of a combat savant. A few weeks of practice and he would make the cloth dance around the opposition.

Kei's brow furrowed at the sophomore's sudden apprehension. "Mm?" His eyes followed Farrin's gaze and- oh. "Oh! Yeah it has been but it's usually dormant while you're here- just a side project I'm workin' on." AI wasn't his specialty but he'd been making good progress on perfecting the robot. Nothing bad happened with it since its last incident at least.

That wasn't important right now though. What was important was Farrin had an idea. The kind that required the support major's assistance. And since the guy was good in his book he was more than happy to help.

Kei peered at the video the sophomore played on his phone, gasping at the source of inspiration for his concept. "Ooh Yuki Onna!" He'd only met her personally when he volunteered for her simulation, but he had always been in awe by her cool heroics- pun intended.

He looked up at Farrin and grinned. He was getting better at parsing the guy's accent so he was able to nod at his explanation. "That makes sense. Sometimes you just wanna restrain 'em fast without bringin' out the big guns, especially when they have no resistance." Hard to ease up on the elemental effects from the bullets after all. And while he was sure Farrin could pull his punches, hands couldn't really keep people still unless he just knocked someone out.

The junior turned to pick up his journal and open it to a new page, taking a pen as well to jot down notes. "Do you have ideas on anythin' special you want it to do? From what I remember, Yuki Onna could channel her Quirk through her cloths so she could freeze others from a range."

exactly," Farrin confirmed with a smirk. "Some dopes out der' might try ta' leg it away from a crime scene, n' they've earned 'emselves more den' a slap on the wrist, but jus' because they're an absolute eejit dun' always mean they need a wallopin, 'specially if no one was actually hurt."

Preferable though Farrin was to a good match of fisticuffs, hurting people unnecessarily wasn't his thing. Friendly competitions, protecting those that couldn't defend themselves, or apprehending some real piece of shite, all of those were valid reasons to throw hands, but a purse snatcher acting out of desperation didn't need a broken leg, or a near-sonic stun round blasted into their back if it could be avoided. Of course, Farrin could simply catch the crook, but the more tools he had to work with, the better. Long gone were the days of equipment aversion. 

"Honestly, I hadn't e'en thought o' that. I found out a while back that mercury sorta holds a residual temporal charge," or whatever that temporal power really was, he opted for his own nomenclature for now, "but I dun' know if that will extend me' fields or anythin' like that. If they could apply the effects o' me' quirk to a target, that'd be mighty deadly." More of his old lingo, 'deadly' meaning brilliant rather than lethal in this instance.

Farrin eyed Kei's notebook. Peering the pages might be a little intrusive, but he was certainly a curious cat. What did the lad have in mind? The more tools in the time-turner's toolbox, the better.

Kei blinked at the fact, parroting it back with that lilt of someone who didn't understand what they just heard. "Mercury holds a residual temporal charge?" What a weird interaction. Kei wasn't about to question it though; Quirks were already wild as they were. If he could duplicate something without touching it, an element can hold on to Farrin's power. He grimaced at the guy's choice of words though, unfamiliar with the slang he was using. "I dunno about deadly. We're tryin' not to use excessive force to apprehend someone remember?"

When Farrin peered at his journal, he held it out so the hero student had a better view of the page. The drawing was sketchy but it depicted a person latching on to someone with the ribbon, with wavy lines emanating from the target. "I did think of that though. If I incorporate mercury into the cloths, the charge could slow down whoever you catch, makin' it even harder for them to escape without overexertin' yourself."

He squinted at the page as he tapped the pen to his chin in thought. "Does the amount of charge depend on how much mercury's in the item? Wouldn't want that energy to deplete immediately, but at the same time the scarf can't be made purely of mercury since it's liquid at room temperature." His lips pressed into a thin line. "Not to mention it's poisonous."

he gears were turning in Farrin's time-touched mind, but it took a moment to realize his mistake this time. Although he was speaking in Japanese, he continued to process his words like that of an Irish-born New Yorker. Again, even after all these years, it was difficult to shake his parents' lingo. Maybe part of him didn't want to. 

"Sorry lad, I meant like brilliant, not dangerous," he explained without fully explaining. 

He was an odd one here and accepted that fact a while ago, but the school was packed to the brim with fellow black sheep. That much wouldn't need explaining, so rather than spend ever-precious time doing so, he returned to the topic at hand. Namely, the binding cloth. 

"If yuh think yuh can weave tagether the cloth without it puttin meself er' others at risk, n' still hold the mercury in place, then that sounds like a plan ta' me!" He said with a grin.

Chronokinesis had an odd set of rules Farrin had to follow. It moved forward and couldn't be kept still or reversed. No jumping around it either. And he couldn't just throw fields over people all will-nilly. A willing target, making the decision to accept time's touch was much easier to envelop in his fields than someone resisting. For this reason, it was simple, albeit tiring, to speed up a friend. An enemy, however, required some work to slow down. Usually, he had to place a field behind them or low enough that they wouldn't see it. Then, when they moved into the field, the requirements were met, and they slowed down. It would've been a boon to hero-kind if Farrin could just run around slowing people as he willed, but attempting as much often saw his descent into temporal sifting almost immediately.

Perhaps, though, with the binding cloth, he could find something like a loophole. The field wasn't directly summoned over the opposition. It was locked around a pliable piece of gear, which happened to collide with the target. Normally, aside from personal fields, which were anchored to a person, his temporal fields were immutable--locked in place. But if it were locked around something that could move, similar to those personal fields, though wrapped around something flexible, maybe it would work! 

The gears were turning again, crunching the ups and downs of his own quirk, but when he was finished, he looked to Kei again. "Oh, I hope this works" he said, again, with a smile.

Kei's brow was still furrowed as he stared at the image on his journal when Farrin spoke, prompting him to look up and blink. "Ohhhh." That made a lot more sense. He should've known really, the guy spoke repeatedly about not wanting to use too much force when apprehending people. A laugh escaped him. "I really should learn all your phrases."

He looked down at the page as Farrin grew excited over the prospect. "Just gotta find the right balance I think." He really was counting on him. No reason not to- he did make both the wrist launchers and the armour after all. The armour was improved upon by a colleague but still. And honestly, the more he thought about it, the more determined he felt that he could get the job done. He built a stick from a unique substance before even. Surely this wouldn't be difficult.

Kei closed his book with a spark in his eye. "I'll do it! I got some other projects to do so this would take me a week or two I think. I'll let you know when a prototype's ready so you could test it."
