I

t was the first of many matches Farrin chose to partake in during the Sports Festival. The other challenges were all well and good, but nothing simulated the actual threats waiting beyond UAU's walls like a good ol' scrap. So, Farrin stepped up onto the arena and eyed the crowd above before fixing his gaze across to the opposition.

This was a two-on-two match. He wasn't familiar with his partner, Julienne Lémieux or "Accelerator," but that only further mimicked the conditions they would face as heroes. If you weren't working with a team out there, you had to fight alongside the other first responders in any given attack. So, while he waited for Julienne to step onto the arena, Farrin began to shadowbox, jabbing the air and simultaneously eyeing the enemy team. 

The two must have known each other. They didn't give off a "best friends" vibe, but there was an acknowledgment there. One wielded a large, blunted blade. The other was unarmed. Both were jacketed, but that didn't tell Farrin much, nor were their quirks obvious. Hopefully, they weren't among those who heard the whispers about Farrin's quirk or knew Julienne either. That would leave them at a level playing field, at least. 

When Julienne stepped onto the arena, Farrin would approach. "Oi, hey there, lass. Name's Farrin, er' Oberon out 'ere. Eh, we dun' have long before we start, so I think it best we know each other's quirks, the basics at least. I can speed thing up n' slow 'em down, how 'bout yerself?"

A two-on-two match, with someone she had yet to meet. Julienne was quite excited to see even more of her fellows, and this time it was in something she knew she could do; a straight-up brawl. Even though her first attempt at a sparring match ended poorly, she blamed that for being up against someone as mighty as Jun; this time, however, she was up against a duo more her level. Besides, she also had this interesting dude with her. As she thought about him, she turned her gaze from the massive blade of her opponent, towards the man known as Farrin. Just as she did, she heard the thick accent.

It almost caused her to laugh at first; not mockingly, just out of surprise. He could speed things up or slow them down, how fitting that he was paired with herself, the future hero named Accelerator! "Farrin! Nice to meet you finally!" She grinned ear to ear; ever since she saw his name on the ballot she knew it was going to be a blast. "I fly." She'd hold up her hands to either side, showing the valve in each of her palms. "It's called Jetstream, and I am very, very fast." Placing her arms down, she'd turn her head to look at their opponents. "So fast I bet I could probably reach them in..." She'd hold up her hand, counting to one, and then two, and then three... then back to two. "Two seconds, I think. At least... at this distance."

Clenching her fist and striking a heroic pose, she did her best to look heroic. "Only downside is controlling this thing! If you could imagine the G-forces, oh boy..." She'd glance back to Farrin. "Hey, if we combine our quirks... think I could take out the big sword guy in under a second?" Confidence oozed from the girl. She knew she could reach her opposition at extreme speeds; the only downside was building up the explosive force, something she wasn't allowed to do until the bell rang.

ebating the competitor whispering in Farrin's ear was second only to debating the wind. Fortunately, it did come second. As much as he wanted to race Julienne to find who was the faster between them, they were a team, and their common enemies stood opposite them in the arena. Twin pillars just waiting to be toppled over.

And Julienne's strategy just might pack the punch required. 

"Yuh' confident yuh won't go o'er the edge o' yerself?" He asked. 

If Julienne could move at any meaningful fraction of the speed of sound, a temporal acceleration field might turn her into a feckin rail gun. Practically, anyway. But ring-outs earned one disqualification. If she went over the edge, that would be the end for Julienne. If she didn't take the swordsman with her, then Farrin would be left to a two on one, not that he minded the challenge. But everyone deserved their fair shot. 

The bell rang, though, and they were out of time. 

Farrin swept his hand left. A circular, nearly translucent field, only slightly touched with an emerald hue, would appear before them. "Move through that n' yuh'll be accelerated ta' incredibly speeds fer a few seconds." He could throw a personal field around her, one that would grant longer-lasting effects, but there was no telling how she would manage that when combined with her own quirk. At least this way, she could test the doubled-up effects of their abilities, and if she wasn't rung out, she could decide whether she wanted more of his chronokinetic help or not.   

Farrin, however, had his own target. He beamed across the field and threw a jab toward the unarmed opponent. A field, not unlike Farrin's, albeit spherical in shape and more deep blue in color, formed around the boy. Farrin's fist landed like a cannon against reinforced steel. Pain flared in his fist, but he didn't budge. Neither did the shield. 

"Though it'd be that easy, did you?" The unarmed lad taunted, a smirk crossing his face.

"Kinda hoped so, yeah," Farrin spat back, then leaped back a few paces, looking toward the others. The first few seconds would dictate the entire match. Hopefully, Julienne wouldn't ring herself out.
