If teaching was his job, then patrolling had effectively become his hobby in the months that he had moved to Japan. It was a sense of ‘normalcy’ in what he felt had become a very abnormal life, at least for somebody that was effectively married to his job to the detriment of most things outside of said job. But patrolling the street was a sense of zen, it was something he was good at and had been doing for more years than he hadn’t. It had become such an ingrained part of his routine, that not doing it made him restless and stir-crazy. And whilst teaching the next generation of heroes was something he should feel more pride in, it was his work first as a law enforcer and then as a pro hero that made him actually prideful… … It also helped him hopefully ingratiate himself with the locals, show them that there were heroes on the streets, ones that actually bothered to keep the city in one shape if they could so help it… …And there was no better than to actually do something good for people, again, teaching heroes was helping the future, but the here and now deserved his attention too. “So I suggest, if you want to have a good future for yourself, to actually go learn a vocation instead of stealing from working people.” Max said gruffly in his ever-so-improving Japanese, with still a pretty heavy French accent running through to make it confusing to people. A duo of youngsters, probably about the same age as his students, had figured they could simply use their quirks to terrorize a convenience store owner into giving them money. Whilst he knew that there still were Yakuza roaming in the shadows, these two were simply too dumb to even be in the running to work for those. Max figured they had been the types to fall through the cracks of society, and with a powerful quirk they could feel good about themselves as well as ‘provide’… But if there was one thing that pissed him off, it were people that figured that just because they had it bad it gave them a license to simply ignore every lifeline and make their own laws. “You’re still young enough, there’s plenty of places that would hire you if you applied yourself…” Max added as a police car showed up to take them away. With the crooks and cops out of sight, he tipped his head to the shopkeeper before continuing on. At least, until his systems detected some sort of hurried movement, someone running away holding a handbag, as well as being chased down by a group of people wielding blunt weapons. Neither seemed victims at a glance, but he made sure to put an extra zip into his step as he made his way to an intersect point. What a terrible day to wake up. Every day, more or less, was the same. Boring, boring, boring. Today, of all days, felt even moreso, if such a thing were possible.[break][break] Xyu rolled out of his hotel bed and stayed on the cool floor for more minutes than was comfortable. Eventually, when he decided it was worth it, he rose to his feet, taking in the slight daylight creeping around the curtains. Some part of him wanted to sunbathe, to relax, and another thought it ridiculous: to do such a thing after he had just awaken. Nothing would be solved that way. Nothing would be fun or exciting.[break][break] So, Xyu went to the bathroom and, with a sigh, threw water across his face. Cold, yes. Annoying, yes. But was it good enough to get him out of the door? It only took another hour of waffling around before the answer was yes.[break][break] Downtown Tokyo, a place sure to be interesting. Of course, he wasn't solely here for that reason. There was the matter of some assassination he was supposed to do at some point, but that hardly mattered. There were places to see, people to meet, experiences to be had! And maybe, just maybe, just one of them would actually strike his fancy. He doubted it, but he always doubted everything.[break][break] Perhaps it was his attire—a suit and tie—or perhaps it was his snake head, but he was getting more looks than usual. Even though he noted it, he was hardly fazed. His approach was simple and consistent—other people hardly mattered. It made things really really easy. Too easy, he sometimes thought. He lowered his head, practically kicking his dress shoes against the pavement like a pouting child.[break][break] Without any reaction on his part, someone ran by him, followed by a group of angry folks. Xyu was too distracted by his own complaining that it was only when one of the angry ones yelled that he even noticed.[break][break] "We're gonna kill you!" one said. Xyu's head perked up. That sounded fun.[break][break] He ran after them, still fast enough to catch up despite his fancy clothes. Without hardly a care, Xyu tripped one of the trailing chasers, causing him to fall hard. Xyu whipped his head down and bit him, causing the man to fall silent for the time being. He sat down on top of him and stared ahead at what appeared to be a standoff.[break][break] The rest of the group didn't even notice their friend go down. They had just cornered the one holding the bag—a man of smaller stature. He didn't even appear old or strong, but it was still the sort of thing to brighten a dreary day, whatever the outcome. Whether or not the person from earlier was really going to murder the guy was uncertain, but it hardly mattered now.[break][break] Xyu smiled, watching. This was fun.

Max should’ve figured as he got closer, there truly was little honour amongst thieves. A singular criminal against a handful of them, someone who snatched a civilians bag and the jackals that were opportunistically looking to steal someone else’s undeserved feast. Unfortunately for the five of them, Lawbringer would make sure that nobody was going to get away with the bag, but also nobody was going to get hurt… … Because the four jackals definitely looked like they weren’t interested in simply asking for the other crook to hand over the valuables, and the crook despite their unassuming stature seemed very unimpressed either. It was going to become a back-alley quirk brawl, and the worst part was that Max knew that he was going to get the brunt of it the moment he jumped in between. “Ok, the dance is over, kids.” The hero named Lawbringer called out as they appeared and quickly and confidently strode towards the middle. The French accent in his technically sound but stilted Japanese speech undoubtedly causing some momentary confusion. As an added touch, his head unit had only sparse information on a few of them, mostly just dossiers about minor crimes, not even bad enough for quirks to be written down, so they were crimes without the use of the latter. “Who the hell are you, old man?!” came from the lips of what Max assumed was the leader of the jackals, their eyes slit like a cat and the ends of their fingers curled into devastatingly sharp claws. “…I’m the guy that makes sure none of you end up in the hospital, if you’re smart enough to stop right now…” he’d say in a calm but commanding voice. “But you can call me ‘Lawbringer’…” he’d say, his attitude somewhat inspired by old timey cowboys. Laughs emanated from the jackals, meanwhile the singular crook stayed stoic and unimpressed despite being now cornered by four criminals and a hero. “Ain’t you tough shit, well none of us ever heard of your bum ass!” they called out with more excess attitude. The leader nodded at his buddies, each of them spreading out to pounce on him… Max could only sigh as he tapped some preliminary settings into his rifle. “I gave you all a chance, just remember that when you’re sleeping in a cell tonight.” he’d say as he levelled his rifle at the first target. All of them some form of animalistic aspect to them, the first one had barely pounced before they had gotten a kinetic blast straight to their center mass to throw them off their feet. Hard enough to make them sprawl, soft enough for it to at best leave a bruise. It was a warning shot, the first and only one he offered them… Tag: gamelizard

What a terrific sight. Much better than he had seen in months. Really, all his prior months faded into nothingness now that he was faced with something of interest. Some criminals—wannabe criminals, but still—and a hero. The whole thing was so beautiful, so unequivocally not boring.[break][break] Xyu heard the man underneath him breathing heavily. Perhaps it was the full weight of another human being on top of him as poison ran through his veins. Xyu flicked his eyes back to the matter at hand. He couldn’t bother to care about anything else right now.[break][break] “But you can call me ‘Lawbringer’…”, said the hero. He was weathered, metallic almost. Tall and strong, but not just that. He was confident. Usually it was hard to tell what someone’s quirk was, and he was no exception. However, it was a certainty that he wasn’t weak. Xyu wasn’t one to care much for people by and large, but it was always nice to see someone different, and this Lawbringer man fit the bill. [break][break] One of the criminals spoke back, and Xyu smirked. Neither had noticed him, which was a pleasant surprise. They were so invested in each other that they had no time to view others. Maybe it was because Xyu was so still. He rested his chin on his hand and cocked his head to the side, letting loose a small chuckle.[break][break] “I gave you all a chance, just remember that when you’re sleeping in a cell tonight.” the Lawbringer threatened. He aimed his rifle at the criminals, who appeared a mixture of angry and worried. Despite their chest-puffing, it was a scary sight to see someone with so little hesitation. Most people were filled with hesitation, from shopping to killing. This man holding the rifle had nearly none. He fired, blasting one of them back, though not severely injuring them. Xyu sighed, his smile fading. This man really was a hero.[break][break] The remaining criminals stood still for a moment—little ants silently communicating with each other about some threat they cannot comprehend. Eventually, like most ants, they marched ahead.[break][break] “Same time!” one of them yelled, who sprouted a horn from his forehead as he prepared to charge at the Lawbringer. Xyu perked up once more—watching such a foolish attempt was bound to result in something unexpected. However, it was beginning to make him feel left out, sitting on some unconscious man.[break][break] He stood up and brushed off his suit. In all the hubbub, the original thief had gone a little…neglected. It was to be expected, of course. The one hero was dealing with four idiots. The thief, Xyu noticed, was just beginning to realize he could just sneak off.[break][break] “Hey,” Xyu hissed, causing the thief to nearly jump from surprise. Something about the surrounding chaos had really done a number on everyone’s eyesight.[break][break] “Wh-who are you?” the thief asked. He gripped the bag with one hand and extended his free arm toward Xyu. “Stay back!”[break][break] Xyu paused. First he tilted his head and hummed, and then he chuckled. “I see. Curious. Why do you want to fight me?”[break][break] “Wha?” the thief replied, dumbfounded. He looked past Xyu, seeing an unconscious man on the ground. “That was one of the guys chasing me! Did you kill him?”[break][break] “I didn’t kill him,” Xyu replied calmly. “He’s sleeping.”[break][break] The thief kept his arm up, though his grip on the bag loosened. “I see. So you’re a hero.”[break][break] Xyu smiled. What a fun assumption. “So what’s in the bag?”[break][break] “Um…” the man replied. “Just my bag. School supplies.”[break][break] “Really? They were all chasing you for school supplies? What awful luck.” Xyu approached slowly, his eyes narrowing.[break][break] “H-hey, I’m not lying. These guys are bad news.” His eyes shifted from Xyu over to the Lawbringer and his battle, but that was the wrong move. Xyu took the brief opportunity to step forward and slither his head past the thief’s arm and deliver a bite. Partially due to preserving his venom, and also because he found it a wiser outcome, he delivered a small dose.[break][break] “Ow! Ahh! My arm!” the thief yelled, dropping the bag onto the bag and immediately grabbing his left arm, which he was unable to move much. In fact, he could hardly press two fingers together.[break][break] As he yelled out in shock, Xyu grabbed his neck and leaned in. “If you want to live, run away. You’ve played your part.”[break][break] The thief’s eyes widened. He hardly needed to think it over. As Xyu watched him sprint away, one arm flopping around, he was reminded of how easily people succumb to fear. In one swift motion, he picked up the bag and approached the group of fighters—Lawbringer and the others. [break][break] With a smile, Xyu held up the bag and called out to them in his best ‘innocent civilian’ voice. “I got the bag! He dropped it and ran away!”

“Same Time!” one of them would yell, and Max would internally groan a little as they had so quickly reverted to caveman tactics to deal with the heroic problem at hand. But despite their collective stupidity, he’d know better than to lose his composure or become complacent about the situation. Rather his hud constantly adjusting his rifle’s output, he tried his best to let it do its job by aiming center of mass and letting loose a blast. One of them would find a way through, or at least had more resiliency than the system had assumed, pushing forward and levelling his pointy horn at Max’s chest looking to gore him. Max stepped back, then adjusted his stance to try and deflect the blow, only working partially as the crook passed him by but would use his hidden knife to slash at Max’s chest where the horn would miss. His jacket ripped, that annoyed him greatly, but they’d be shocked as his thick skin would cause the knife to harshly bounce off and get flicked out of the crook’s flimsy grip. “Nice try.” Max would exclaim as he opted for the physical approach and levelled his forearm into the crook’s face, slamming them into the ground harshly. It was a less than efficient approach, and his rifle would do a better attempt at protecting the criminal than his forearm ever did. But it dropped them like an overripe sack of potatoes. The third one had picked himself up, but on a third volley his rifle wasn’t guessing anymore, and the next shot landed center of mass and put him to sleep. [[CIVILIAN IN DANGER]] his hud called out in a harsh tone that couldn’t be ignored. Max turned around to face the new situation, and a new face that his system hadn’t accounted for thus far. “Who the hell are you?” he’d say, levelling his rifle as his system frantically tried to access the database and get a respectable firing solution. Xyu admired the scene before him—an experienced fighter, a hero most likely, fighting off a horde of less-than-prepared criminals. It was an easy bet who would win, but still fascinating to watch. The hero, Lawbringer, clearly had some sort of tough exterior. It wasn’t clear what the specifics were, but Xyu knew he should have been slashed by that knife. Interesting. His fangs wouldn’t work. He chuckled. It wouldn’t be wise to try that anyway.[break][break]
Lawbringer finally noticed Xyu, and he appeared on guard. No surprise there. After all, Xyu was holding the bag everyone was after. He wondered to himself if, perhaps, this was a stupid idea. Some days were made for stupid ideas.[break][break]
“Me?” Xyu replied to Lawbringer. “I’m just a passing civilian. Grabbed the bag for you. Your thief went running off that way,” Xyu pointed in a general direction, giving no indication of the actual route the thief took. “I guess he was clumsy, or scared, or maybe just wanted to repent. But anyway, here.” Xyu extended his arms out holding the bag.[break][break]
“I can tell you’re some sort of hero, maybe a vigilante.” Xyu had long since noted the robotic visor the man wore, but he just now realized something. “Does that have to do with sight or is it something else? And your quirk. You’re quite the formidable fighter, huh?” [break][break]
Xyu, if the bag had already been taken, would walk casually around. His interest was beginning to rise. This man would surely make his day even more exciting. But he had to be careful. If this man were a target, he would be in trouble. But here, on a public street—no one was suspicious of Xyu. At least, not as much as they should have been.
