Ever so slowly it seemed that the student was pushing himself a bit more, the strikes were still sloppy and unfocused, mostly just looking to use their stamina to throw a lot of punches in a short span of times in an effort of overwhelming his opponent and landing some hits. It would work against untrained opponents, people who’d equally were unskilled at hand to hand combat who could get overwhelmed by ferocity rather than skill. But Max was neither untrained, nor did he need to feel threatened by volume. Partially showing off and partially efficiency, Max merely focused on throwing back the punches that aimed at his face. His quirk making his skin extremely durable, it would probably take seconds before the young man started noticing that it would feel like throwing hands against a life sized heavybag made out of steel. His body had ‘some’ give, so it shouldn’t shatter his knuckles, but his mind would (if he had sense) start flinching at the thought of throwing further. “You need more than that, speed won’t work on me, and power won’t either…” he’d call out as he levelled his forearm to a blow and would create a little more distance, staying defensive and passive, but giving his student time to think about his approach. “You need precision, accuracy, efficiency. You got speed and power, and it’ll work on most, but approach your hand-to-hand combat like you would use your sword.” he’d lecture, maybe even stating the obvious. He stood still and shifted his weight. “Use your quirk, use your swordsmanship, but use it with your body instead. And try to either cut or stab through me.” he’d propose, hoping he’d understand it wasn’t meant literally. enma

Max cracked a light smile at the notion of him being somebody that would tell anybody to not do something. He had his opinions, some he would freely share with others if he felt the need to give someone a push, but if the young lady was already thinking about being told to stop trying to be a hero, maybe it was more on her mind than anybody else’s. “Do you think you’d do better as a support hero?” he’d ask, quickly leaping onto their cynicism. “Because I’ll tell you straight up right now that I’m not here to tell you what you have to do with your career.” he’d say, bluntly and pointedly. He had to say it, partially to clear the air about his reasons of helping her as a student, and to find out what was really on their mind. Because that latter part was probably the key to her problems anyways. Masao Ando

Even if Mai had made something of an awkward joke, Max was possibly lucky to not understand it fully, the powers of subtlety being lost in translation for someone who hadn’t learned enough Japanese yet to understand finer details and subtleties. “Fascinating…” Max remarked softly as Mai spoke of her upbringing and her reasons of being. In the time he’d been in Tokyo, he’d hear a lot of heroes and would-be heroes talk about family traditions and trying to uphold them, it clearly was something that was different to his own. Perhaps because of the way his father had been, he had felt little in emulating that man. But even then, it definitely felt unique to Japan for anybody, especially heroes, to feel so beholden to family ideals. But he neither thought it was inherently good or bad, just more reason to do things the same or differently than who came before. “It’s interesting you say that, I’ve not been here long enough to notice something, but at least my instincts aren’t messed up.” he’d answer her worries about the state of the city, the restlessness. An outsider like him could easily mistake it as the general pulse of a city, since every place had their own ways of existing. Some cities were constantly busy, even when they had no reason to be, some places seemed like they were devoid of human interaction whilst others you couldn’t go two blocks without something happening. “As for me, I’m staying for as long as people want me around. It has worked for me in the past, don’t think there’s a reason for me to change that approach now.” he’d say with a swiftness and confidence that would hopefully bury the question as to why anybody wouldn’t want him around in the first place. Glancing around, he’d nod at someone tending to their yard as they continued down their path. “Anything specific I need to look out for?” he’d ask, tracking back to his partner’s earlier worries. Keeping on his tracksuit, Max simply stayed silent at the student’s assumptions of not hurting him or him hurting them. Max knew better than to slip into complacency, even someone who he doubled in age. If they were part of U.A., they had the capabilities to deal a massive world of hurt to most people. The first attack, somewhat annoyingly, was a very heavy overhead. The power to throw him off his feet, but telegraphed to such a point that he had stepped aside and ready to counter. But rather than throw a punch back, he gave Enma a shove. “Come on, how about you try something less obvious, even someone as old as me can counter that.” he’d say with a venom on his tongue that seemed excessive. But he both wanted to see what the kid had to offer, as well as push their buttons to see if there was more under the surface. Strip away the rational thought, and aim to see them act on instinct and emotion. enma

It wasn’t fair of him to put the student on the spot like that, and he doubted that most of them in the class would be able to give him a coherent answer if they had been put in a similar situation as the young Frenchwoman had been. But he’d write down some notes anyways, if only to make her ‘failure’ seem more dramatic than it actually was. Childish mindgames, but at least it would help keep everyone focused for the dourly boring lectures that were to come in the future. “Well yes, I did mention the license. But it’s about more than just the license, ultimately any one of you can get a license once they finish their studies with passing grades, but that doesn’t necessarily make all of you capable heroes from the first day.” he’d explain, flicking through his notebook that was comprised of a messy system of notes that only he somehow could decipher. Letting in a deep breath and taking another sip of water, he’d look over the class. “A hero is someone who protects others, not just through action, but through example. Acting on emotion rather than rationally causes a hero to make mistakes, or blind themselves to the responsibility they have been given.” he’d say, again continuing the lecture. “We have a responsibility to use our station correctly, and in the most heated moment make the cool headed decision that protect as many lives as possible, even if sometimes the choice made is not the one that will feel like the right one.” he’d add, taking another sip. “We have to work with law enforcement to uphold public trust, and the laws we are all expected to follow. That includes treating criminals, even if some might not deserve such treatment, a level of respect and care that we give civilians and our fellow heroes… Because even villains deserve a day in court, so that justice can work, and society can thrive.”“A vigilante, as people call them, does not have to work with police, nor do they need to respect the justice system as it exists. They make their own laws, and mete out justice only in a way that they deem satisfactory. Whether that’s beating up criminals without proof, or even killing when they deem it necessary. Rather than letting society police itself, they merely give themselves the right of judge, jury, and executioner… So whilst there are many vigilantes with the right intentions, without upholding the law they are ultimately equally a problem as the villains they strive to stop. They subvert justice, and diminish people’s trust in the system. Why let a hero take a killer into custody, when a vigilante could simply kill him?” he’d finish, letting another dilemma sit in the room. It was a heavy and talkative lecture for a first class of the semester, but he hoped it would lead to further philosophizing amongst the students in future days. For them to make their own understanding, rather than a system where one out of four answers was the correct one. “Enough for now, like I asked at the start of the class, you can take the coming week to deliver to me a short form essay of one page concerning your interpretation of ’what makes a hero different?’. Once again, there are no right and wrong answers, just interpretations.
Tapping a pen on his desk, he’d look over the class and give a nod at the door. “Now go learn how to be heroes some more.” he’d say with the faintest of smiles.
But as the Frenchwoman would pass the desk, he’d aim a look. “Miss Lemieux, quick talk, please?” he’d ask her in their shared native language.

“It’s easy to hide behind a shield knowing it can’t break, but I’ve not seen a quirk in my life that’s been perfect. And knowing when to hide behind the armor, and when to strike from behind it is a major distinction that heroes need to learn.” he’d tell Masao dryly, like an engineer explaining his craft. “Besides, depending on the situation, our work requires us to take risks to keep others safe.” he’d add. His body was littered with lingering scars from fights, and he was pretty certain that none of those scars happened because he tried to protect himself. He’d let the young woman’s remarks about her workaholic nature lie for now, if only because he was intent on pushing it at a later moment when he had a more poignant point to make. “Right, makes sense.” he’d say, playing it off. “Let’s change the subject, why do you think the headmaster told you to seek me out?” he’d say, wanting to get closer to the point. He’d point at a bench near the fields, and offer her to take a seat as he looked over the grass pitch. Masao Ando

“Same Time!” one of them would yell, and Max would internally groan a little as they had so quickly reverted to caveman tactics to deal with the heroic problem at hand. But despite their collective stupidity, he’d know better than to lose his composure or become complacent about the situation. Rather his hud constantly adjusting his rifle’s output, he tried his best to let it do its job by aiming center of mass and letting loose a blast. One of them would find a way through, or at least had more resiliency than the system had assumed, pushing forward and levelling his pointy horn at Max’s chest looking to gore him. Max stepped back, then adjusted his stance to try and deflect the blow, only working partially as the crook passed him by but would use his hidden knife to slash at Max’s chest where the horn would miss. His jacket ripped, that annoyed him greatly, but they’d be shocked as his thick skin would cause the knife to harshly bounce off and get flicked out of the crook’s flimsy grip. “Nice try.” Max would exclaim as he opted for the physical approach and levelled his forearm into the crook’s face, slamming them into the ground harshly. It was a less than efficient approach, and his rifle would do a better attempt at protecting the criminal than his forearm ever did. But it dropped them like an overripe sack of potatoes. The third one had picked himself up, but on a third volley his rifle wasn’t guessing anymore, and the next shot landed center of mass and put him to sleep. [[CIVILIAN IN DANGER]] his hud called out in a harsh tone that couldn’t be ignored. Max turned around to face the new situation, and a new face that his system hadn’t accounted for thus far. “Who the hell are you?” he’d say, levelling his rifle as his system frantically tried to access the database and get a respectable firing solution. “I know, right?” Max answered right back with a heavy dose of confidence. Sure, relying too much on equipment was a cardinal sin as far as hero work was concerned. But he wasn’t the type of hero that misunderstood their weaknesses, and rather would prefer to help augment his abilities to make himself as useful as possible. Personalized headgear to help him keep an understanding of his surroundings had been something that had been at the tippy top of the list, and something he had gone through a lot of effort to acquire. [|] As they were walking, expectedly the first conversation piece where the usual shop talks. Stuff to get to know the other better on a professional level, rather than awkward and/or weird anecdotes about past experiences. “The biggest difference is the distances, really.” he remarked as he had his visor up to not come across too intimidating to people. “In a city, the beat is smaller, more people on a smaller area dynamic.” he explained casually, his earpiece chittering directions. “Rural patrols, though, there’s less heroes to go around and people are spread out. So our patrol area becomes wider, although at least there tend to be less trouble… Or different kinds of it.” he’d say. In a way, the rural patrols were kind of meditative in nature, but he tried to not treat them overly differently. He just had to extend his service to people differently, people had different issues, but they still appreciated help equally. “Any reason you’ve stuck around Tokyo?” he wondered as he wouldn’t think it weird if there was no deep reason behind it. Max should’ve figured as he got closer, there truly was little honour amongst thieves. A singular criminal against a handful of them, someone who snatched a civilians bag and the jackals that were opportunistically looking to steal someone else’s undeserved feast. Unfortunately for the five of them, Lawbringer would make sure that nobody was going to get away with the bag, but also nobody was going to get hurt… … Because the four jackals definitely looked like they weren’t interested in simply asking for the other crook to hand over the valuables, and the crook despite their unassuming stature seemed very unimpressed either. It was going to become a back-alley quirk brawl, and the worst part was that Max knew that he was going to get the brunt of it the moment he jumped in between. “Ok, the dance is over, kids.” The hero named Lawbringer called out as they appeared and quickly and confidently strode towards the middle. The French accent in his technically sound but stilted Japanese speech undoubtedly causing some momentary confusion. As an added touch, his head unit had only sparse information on a few of them, mostly just dossiers about minor crimes, not even bad enough for quirks to be written down, so they were crimes without the use of the latter. “Who the hell are you, old man?!” came from the lips of what Max assumed was the leader of the jackals, their eyes slit like a cat and the ends of their fingers curled into devastatingly sharp claws. “…I’m the guy that makes sure none of you end up in the hospital, if you’re smart enough to stop right now…” he’d say in a calm but commanding voice. “But you can call me ‘Lawbringer’…” he’d say, his attitude somewhat inspired by old timey cowboys. Laughs emanated from the jackals, meanwhile the singular crook stayed stoic and unimpressed despite being now cornered by four criminals and a hero. “Ain’t you tough shit, well none of us ever heard of your bum ass!” they called out with more excess attitude. The leader nodded at his buddies, each of them spreading out to pounce on him… Max could only sigh as he tapped some preliminary settings into his rifle. “I gave you all a chance, just remember that when you’re sleeping in a cell tonight.” he’d say as he levelled his rifle at the first target. All of them some form of animalistic aspect to them, the first one had barely pounced before they had gotten a kinetic blast straight to their center mass to throw them off their feet. Hard enough to make them sprawl, soft enough for it to at best leave a bruise. It was a warning shot, the first and only one he offered them… Tag: gamelizard

Max couldn’t help but flash the faintest of predatory grins at the offer for a training companion, he’d be lying if he wasn’t looking to test himself against some of U.A.’s finest. It was a selfish want, honestly not the right attitude to have as a teacher towards a student. But for his own sake he needed to know where he stood, at least to kill the curiosity and figure out where he stood for himself. “I wouldn’t mind a little extra practice tonight.” he’d accept as he loosened up his shoulder a little bit more. He wouldn’t go all out, not at the beginning at least, instead he’d opt for a defensive stance. It was his comfort zone, let the opponent push him and counter where needed. “How about we start with you showing off your fighting style, go easy and show me the basics of how you fight…” he’d say, the teacher inside of him showing up and him getting positioned into his own defensive stance. All he hoped for, genuinely as a teacher, that Enma was actually trained in hand-to-hand in some way. Because he really would have words with his teacher if all the student could show was the rough swings of an untrained brawler. enma

Max let out a gruff little laugh at his partner being ready much faster than he would’ve been, the merits of equipment with quick readymade outfits, made him feel like an even older man for needing to take all the time to get himself fully set up. “Nope.” he’d answer dryly, but tapped on his head unit. “But the unit has the route programmed into it, and all extra info we might need.” he’d say confidently. He wasn’t the only one with expensive equipment, but his own gear choices had always been focused on pure practicality. With his quirk as it was, he could do patrols in a tank top if he wanted to. The armour was partially aesthetics, and not making it too easy on criminals. “Besides, it’s a pretty relaxed route from what I heard.” he’d add with stoic confidence. This patrol was more so about learning his new colleagues. “It’s different, but I am getting used to it.” he’d reply, at least his Japanese already being good enough albeit with a noticeable French accent. “I’ve been in big places, but Tokyo’s a different beast, yeah?” he’d continue, quickly falling into the ease of aimless banter. It would make the patrol go by a whole lot quicker, and he had so much experience with the simple intricacies of meeting new people, it was basically a second nature. Tag: Shirayuki Mai

As he somewhat expected, the young student gave something of a catch-all statement on why they wanted to be a hero. Even with the added pressure, ‘wanting to make a difference’ always felt like such a flimsy reason to go into a profession that involved putting ones own life into danger. Not that he had been any different when he had gone into law enforcement, before stumbling into heroics. But at least from an early age he had been taught the importance of self-sacrifice for the betterment of society, so the choice had been natural for him. He let the question go for now, it was ultimately whatever, he couldn’t look into anybody’s soul and if they were still here, it at least meant they hadn’t shied away from the first hurdles… ”I guess to a point, yes. My skin is tough like metal, and I heard you can produce yourself a suit of armour on command?” he answered her with a rhetorical question. ”I think you’re better off avoiding getting hit, even with your armour, I have kind of leaned into taking the damage for better or worse.” he’d understate. Even with his healing, his body wasn’t in the prettiest state, and at forty-five he had morning where he looked closer to sixty. They were personal choices made in the heat of battle, time and time again. ”I know you’re in support class, so you’re focused more on that side of things, but it’s good that you have a capable quirk to rely upon when our jobs inevitably leaves us in danger…” he’d say in faint praise, although it was ever the awkward to praise someone for something they simply had. Coming to a stop near the fields, he’d look out for a bit at some other students enjoying some time off and playing football. It helped him figure out his next line of questioning. ”By the way, I know you’re busy with your studies, but how often do you take time off?” he’d ask, effectively turning the conversation into an interrogation whenever he pleased. He didn’t have a moral ready whatever she’d answer, but they were all part of his process to inevitably start talking about the elephant on the campus. Masao Ando

”Traveling kinda came natural to me, I guess.” he’d lie somewhat stone-facedly. In truth, it had become as much a necessity in his career than a genuine desire. But eventually he had grown used to the transient nature of his career, ending up in different places also meant that he had learnt how different countries had different heroes, and also different ways of upholding the law. ”As to why I came to Japan, the simple answer is because the headmaster offered me a job to become faculty, and it was the best job offer a hero like me could get.” he’d add, somewhat discounting himself, but still probably a honest assessment of the truth. U.A. was the cream of the crop, not just the students were some of the best and most talented in the world, the faculty was equally capable and exceptional to go with the state of the art nature of the university. The hero named Lawbringer was painfully plain compared to all that, the only thing he brought to the table was the experience of traveling the world one burnt bridge at a time. ”But I think the traveling was good for me, it taught me more than I would have had if I had stayed in France.” he’d add. Glancing back at the hero in training, he figured that the same question was in order. ”I have a good idea why you came to U.A., but what makes you want to be a hero?” he’d ask directly, deciding to immediately start with the live ammo. He knew why they were becoming one, that was obvious to anybody that had half an idea of how career dynasties worked. But more interesting to him was what pushed her to try to become one, rather than what had pushed her into the door. Masao Ando

Putting the finishing touches on grading a few papers, Max rubbed his eyes a little. The teacher life was not something that was coming natural to him, and something inside of him was still fighting the urge to not just disappear and go somewhere else. But those urges would be for another time as he noticed a student walk into the now empty classroom. It wasn’t a surprise, after all, he had promised the headmaster to talk to Ando, and he figured that she had gotten the notice too. ”Please Miss Ando, first drop the honorifics, I can’t get used to those.” he’d say with a weary smile and a raised hand. ”Call me Max, Mr. Deveraux, or Lawbringer…” he re-introduced himself. The honorifics was something he didn’t really get used to since moving to Japan. He knew how to be formal, but it was a level of formality alien and awkward to him. Looking back at the notes and papers on his desk, he shook his head for a second and stood up, being somewhat surprised at how tall the young student was. ”I need a break from grading, do you mind walking along to the fields?” he’d proposed. He could definitely use the fresh air right now, and it helped him think of the daunting task of knowing what to ask or say. Masao Ando

”Sounds like your grandfather taught you well.” he’d say in genuine praise. Although he wondered how much such trainings had come with the added cost of high demands and expectations that some students seemed to struggle under, ‘aspiring to be a hero at a young age’ was one of those lines that genuinely made Max shudder a little, they were fun things to want to be as a youngster, like football player or rockstar… But there was a difference between aspiring in a healthy manner, and being driven to a fault. They hoped that it was the former, rather than the latter. He only knew a small part of such things, he never was expected to be a hero when he was young, but his father had drilled his morals into him relentlessly and tirelessly until those same morals came back to haunt him. Max had carried those teachings with him every day since, both positively and negatively. ”I only teach the exciting courses like ethics and law. Stuff concerning how to best work together with law enforcement, really riveting.” he’d say in jest, he knew that the students weren’t waiting on hitting the books, and his courses were the epitome of that. ”But I can maybe give some physical classes sometime.” he’d add, glancing at the blade. ”Ever thought about how you’d fight if you didn’t have the sword?” he’d pondered out loud in words that could be deliberately construed as a challenge. ”Not that I doubt your skills with a sword, or your ability to keep it. But there's always going to be a time where you can't rely on it.”enma <script src="moz-extension://47a9c40e-f53a-4342-aa89-9b410c8687fa/js/app.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
