Half empty or full... What had two wheels and could drive all over the place? It was a question with many answers and Khepri had found one of them. It would be a wonder if they hadn't, after all, they were sitting on it right now. Turning to the participant next to them as the countdown to start ticked down from ten to nine Khepri couldn't wait for the race to start.
"Do you know which way we're going?" Khepri didn't think backwards was the answer but apparently the race came with two gimmicks on the bike so it wasn't impossible. Maybe that was why the bike they were on shifted colors sometimes. Khepri knew a bit about traffic laws. Red meant stop, green meant go forwards. They hadn't found out yet which color meant go backwards so they'd need to keep an eye on that. "Which color turns people around?" They asked as well just as the start signal resounded and they were off.
Seeing the crowd move forward Khepri began to pedal as well. Forward seemed to be the way to go for now. That was nice and easy. With some luck it'd stay that easy for the entire race.

Peering down at her currently yellow handlebars and the odd little switches on it that definitely weren't just the brakes, Michimi twisted the front wheel from one side and then to the other while staying stationary as she tried to get a feel for the unfamiliar bike. There was nothing wrong with it at all, it just felt a little oversized for her current form. But adapting was what she prided herself on so she didn't make a fuss, instead turning her attention as someone next to her spoke up. It didn't occur to her that the other student was talking about literally which direction, instead giving a quick shake of her head and a smile as she cheerfully replied: "Nope!" To Michi that was half the fun though, finding out the route as they went through it and whatever obstacles might come up.
Her bike shifting from yellow to green, she started to pedal as the group started off. Some tried to race off ahead right out the gate, but Michimi was content to get a feel for it for now. And she kind of wanted to talk to the other student a little more while they had a chance before things got more exciting. So she did her best to keep pace with the cat-like student, giving a laugh at the comment that she assumed was a joke. "Probably red, right? Since blue is going forward?" But then she pursed her lips thoughtfully, letting her bike coast on its own momentum for a moment. "Oh, but Red is usually stop too isn't it..." Mafdet Khepri,

Nodding in response to Michi's words Khepri looked down at their bike while pedaling. Blue. That meant going forward was the right thing to do it seemed. The thought that Michi might be wrong or even worse, lying, didn't even cross Khepri's mind. "It might be purple." After all purple was a mix of red and blue, the colors of stop and going forward. That would mean going backwards right? After all, if it was just stop going forward they could use red for that so the extra clarification must be for more emphasis as to the opposite.
Swerving around a pile-up right around a corner near the bottom of a hill their avoidance of the students that had crashed and were shouting at each other had brought the catbug a bit closer to Michi. Hmm, they knew what to do. When you got closer to someone you were supposed to introduce yourself. As Khepri began to pedal up the hill they turned to face her.
"Hi, I'm Khepri. Who are you?"
Surely they had a moment to chat as they weathered the climb. There was no way there'd be anything bothersome coming into view the moment they reached the top of the hill, would there? Naaaaah.

"Purple makes sense." Michi agreed, twisting her handlebars to veer to the side and avoid another bike that promptly crashed into the small pile up. She wasn't sure if people were just unfamiliar with riding bikes or if they were trying to sabotage people or what, peering back over her shoulder at the arguments breaking out as they continued onward. The sudden introduction being closer prompted a small "Wah!" and briefly wobbling on her bike, the color shifting from green to greenish-yellow, before managing to keep from toppling over on her way up the hill. With a sigh of relief and the color starting to shift back towards a calm green again, she gave Khepri a smile and replied: "Machida Michimi, nice to meet'cha Khepri."
Then they crested the top of the hill and the sudden slope on the other side that was so steep it was practically a straight edge. For just a brief moment Michi's bike teetered on the top as she turned to glance forward again, giving a quiet "Eh?" before tipping forward and letting out a shrill "Waitaminute!" as she went rocketing down the slope at barely controllable speeds - clinging to her handlebars and leaning forward to hug as close to the now bright-yellow bike as she could. Along with a lot of others who made it to the top, only a few stopping before they tipped over the edge and laughing at those that didn't.
A wide pit spanned the bottom of the slope ominously waiting to gobble up the unfortunate cyclists, with no clear ramp or other path to help reach the other side.

"Nice to meet you too!" It truly was. They wasn't sure whether they'd make two friends in a single cycling event or one friend every other cycling event what with how unclear the definition of the prefix 'bi-' was. Hmm, that did beg the question. "Machida-san, how many people are you?"Depending on that they might just be making one more friend before this race was over. Reaching the top of the hill just a little bit behind Michi they got a full view of the pit at the bottom before gleefully following them. They knew this one! They'd seen it before in a movie, the pit probably wasn't real and it was just a test of courage. Without a doubt in their mind they pedaled harder and harder, only briefly looking at their slightly wobbly steering wheel. Oh hey a button. Sort of. Switch, button, same thing. Bringing a finger to it and flicking one they wondered what it did. |

Khepri's question was one Michi actually hadn't gotten before and she blinked over at the other student just a bit before they crested the hill. Whatever answer she would have come up with was put on sudden hold when she looked ahead of them again and went rocketing down the hill, eyes wide in alarm at fast approaching pit. No side paths, no ramps, the brakes on the bike might not stop her in time and might just fling her over her bike instead... Mystery switch it had to be! With desperate flick of a switch small tubes attached to the sides of the bike suddenly extended violently enough to slam into the ground and fling the bike up into the air - Michimi bouncing up off her seat, legs flailing and only staying with her bike thanks to the death grip she had on the handlebars as it soared across the gap.
Some of the riders triggered the same gimmick switch, but some ended up with massively expanded wheels and others extended glider-like wings.
Michi didn't notice any of that though, landing with an 'oof' on the other side of the gap. That had really scared the heck out of them, even if it wasn't likely to be genuinely dangerous... they still had half a mind to complain real loudly about being pranked like that by whoever designed this course! But that grumpy mindset faded after a few calming breaths, coasting along and admitting after a moment that it was actually pretty exciting and cool. They were tempted to get a gadget-bike of some kind of their own now, thinking about it more!
He hadn't noticed that the sudden rush of adrenaline had swapped which form he was in on him, glancing around to see if Khepri had also made it across. If she did, he was going to raise one hand up in a little wave and answer that question from earlier: "Pretty sure I count as just one, but you could say two and not exactly be wrong... and I have three names technically? What about you?" Mafdet Khepri,

Half empty or full... Wings! They didn't know bikes had those these days. Then again Khepri rarely went biking, bikes were very difficult to get through houses and across rooftops. Usually they just ended up slowing you down. Sure, they could get a foldable one but there were at least three times already that Khepri had thought they'd had a foldable bike but then it just broke instead. Oh right big pit ahead. Yoinking the handle of their bike up and leaning back wings took precedence over wheels and off they were, soaring over the pit while still pedaling at a consistent speed. They didn't know if it did anything but there was no reason not to try. There was a brief 'thonk' as they landed on the other side and the glider wings folded themselves back into the bike."Oh, I'm one person. I'm half bug, half cat and half human though so maybe I'm one and a half people." That was an interesting thought. They knew some people were half the person another was but they hadn't really heard about someone being a person and a half yet. They'd need to read up on that later. "What names do you have and- Oh! Did you change your hair?" It was polite to comment on someone getting a haircut from what Khepri knew and although they had no idea when Michi might have gotten one it sure did look different than the last time they met.
Cresting another hill the track seemed to have a few more pits, except this time the path leading to each pit split. On the left was a straighter path for big wheels to bounce off and on the right was a ramp to make proper use of the glider. Khepri's bike shifted from blue to spotted purple that spread in a pinkish way and finally turned mostly red as they glided over one pit after the other, a wide smile on their face the whole time.
At this rate they'd be at the finish line in no time! ...Is all perspective
