"No, this is Khepri," they happily replied. It was nice to see their kind senior here. Khepri hoped she was enjoying herself as much as they were. "The Hokkaido Premium? Would you like extra caramel, senior?" They asked while starting to put the shake together. Before getting this job they hadn't even known it was possible to milk prefectures but apparently this shake was specially made with Hokkaido milk. There was so much left she had to learn, sometimes Khepri just wished they could take in everything they saw with but a glance. They'd be unstoppable. "Water's flavor is just its temperature. Milkshakes are different, don't you think?" Khepri cheerfully asked her kind senior whose name they definitely remembered. Hmm, what had she replied back then? Khepri's smile widened. A riddle! They loved finding the answers to those. "What name should I write on the cup?" The catbug innocently asked, almost two decades of practice ensuring none of their ignorance shone through in their tone.

With the help of their kind seniors and teachers Khepri had finally managed to master the art of making ice cream! Not only did it allow them to secure a steady supply of sweet dishes best served cold so long as they had a few cheap ingredients on hand it had also allowed them to get a nice part time job at the Unity Festival working the milkshake stand. After all, contrary to popular -and Khepri's original- belief milkshakes weren't made with milk and shake. They were made with milk, ice cream and a variety of flavorings or sweeteners! All things that Khepri now had plenty of experience with, something they'd explained in incredible detail to the interviewer until he interrupted them by telling them they had the job. Handing over the latest milkshake they'd made they happily turned to face the next costumer. "Welcome! Oh, senior, it's you! What would you like?"

Shout something weird? Khepri blinked. What was considered weird was different to each and every person. They wondered what Yoko would find weird. The universe's inexorable one-way march towards the future? Fish sticks? The feeling of one's senses being inverted as they're helpless to stop tragedy? Bubblegum that tasted like concepts instead of candy? With a shrug and an acknowledging nod Khepri supposed they could just keep shouting stuff until something worked. Realizing they'd sort of zoned out the rest of Yoko's words until she roared her last sentence Khepri considered that question. Realization arrived moments later just before Yoko did. "Oh! I've got a pack of soda," Khepri cheerfully replied while reaching into her bag and pulling one out. The catbug didn't so much as flinch when Yoko's fist drew near, simply assuming that she was very enthusiastic about accepting the drink. "Here you go!" They continued while trying to hand over the can. It was only after they started that motion that they broke eye contact and realized the rest of Yoko had changed color. They froze. That... that wasn't supposed to happen in a spar. The blonde girl wasn't supposed to turn blue; Or be cold to the touch. W-was that Yoko's normal? Khepri would need to take that into consideration when figuring out what was weird. Their heart rate sped up, pupils dilating as it did. Right! They were here for a spar. It only made sense that adrenaline was coursing through their veins. The time wasn't there yet though, they were still talking after all. The instinct went off way too early, not too late this time! Should Yoko stop her attack in time and accept the can Khepri would grab a second can for themself, raising it in front of them after failing to grab it twice. With it solidly in between themself and Yoko they would crack the shaky can open, bubbles spilling over their fingers as they did.
"Aww this is one of the really fizzy ones."

Khepri nodded in understanding. They weren't a names person either. They'd even misunderstood once and used the opposite of someone's name to address them. Bringing the empty spoon to their mouth their teeth hit metal before they realized the rice had fallen off. Huh. It didn't usually do that either. The spoonsmith had said she couldn't make magic spoons so it couldn't have been that, there truly was something different about the food today. Returning their spoon to the bowl they realized they weren't quite as hungry as they thought and refrained from trying again as they refocused on the conversation. "Agreeable?" Khepri asked with a tilt of their head. Come to think of it they hadn't had arguments with any of the food here so they had no idea how agreeable it normally was. It was possible that was the reason why the rice was gone. Maybe the cat icon on the back of the spoon hadn't been close enough to keep the rice there and it left, falling back into the bowl and laying still. Khepri pushed her meal and cutlery alike to the side, wondering why it was drizzling inside. Didn't clouds usually form higher and outdoors? Had this piece of cloud crashed to the ground, stood up and walked elsewhere? Was that how it ended up here? "Because I'm no longer in Egypt," they explained in a way that explained nothing while nodding along with themself. Had they stayed in Egypt they'd likely still be a vigilante around the clock instead of a hero student at day and a vigilante whenever they remembered where they put their secret costume. “Do you think seven plus eight could hit twenty? Like, surely they could do better than fifteen if they tried hard enough. Right?”

Khepri stood tall and proud on top of the giant crab, like Jouma or like a lightning rod atop a skyscraper. A metaphor made more accurate when realization struck the catbug like lightning. The crabs could speak! More importantly, they were willing to answer. Attentively listening to the crustaceans it did not take long for Khepri's mind to draw a wrong conclusion. They sucked in a sharp breath. This revelation had to be brought to the attention of people higher up the ladder immediately. Pulling their phone out they pressed the speed-dial button as fast as they could. "This is not a good time, Maf-" "Professor Shirayuki! We've found witnesses who know who's behind all this!" "What?! Sphinx, come agai-" "Their name is Doctor Hail. He or she is the one that gave all the crabs vocal cords!""Hold on. Sphinx, what are you-" Loud screeches and thudding noises interrupted Mai's words, cutting her off for several seconds before she continued speaking, sounding just a little more out of breath than before. "Find a safe location and stay where you are, we'll reinforce you as soon-""Oh no, the witnesses! They're going for the witnesses!" Khepri shouted as they saw a horned eel and a scintillating octopus try to make their way up the boat and towards the crabs. Immediately the catbug dropped the phone and rushed to the rescue. From the discarded phone Mai's voice resounded. "Sphinx? What happened? Sphinx!? Sphiiiiiinx!"

Khepri tilted their head in surprise at their fellow student's question. It was an interesting one. A question with many implications. How long had they been here? What was here? Did it encompass only this table? Did it count the dining hall as well? Perhaps it even counted their stay on the entire planet so far. "Either eighteen years or several minutes," they replied before scooping up part of the contents of a cooling rice bowl with a very fancy engraved spoon. Maybe it was just the temperature but the taste felt muted. When they were addressed by a blonde girl out of nowhere they froze for a moment, fingers clenched around the spoon so tightly their knuckles went white. They replied on autopilot, hearing the reply out of their own mouth before they even processed it. "The direction opposite the nearest source of gravity," Khepri answered monotonously. The question had clearly startled them more than expected. Their heart thudded rapidly, their hair stood on end and it took them several seconds to pry their grip loose of the spoon. "Thank you, I've been training. I'm Khepri. Mafdet Khepri," they introduced themselves woodenly with a far off expression, their mind too focused on other thoughts to pay attention to their eyes. Like how firetrucks were actually watertrucks. Before the silence could stretch on for too long they filled it once more. "Does the menu seem different recently or is it just me?" In a way Khepri envied the shark. Using their two hands the catbug narrowly managed to hold onto the fishing rod so when they let go with one of them it'd likely be yanked out of their grip within moments. If they had another pair of hands it'd be much easier to both hold onto the rod and pull off their lifelong fish plans. While Khepri's method had been different unbeknownst to both them and Jouma they had come to the same conclusion. Two plus two really would be fish!Accepting the pike Khepri strained with all their might for a second, their fishing rod holding arm feeling like it might tear off, before the shark let go abruptly and they rocketed towards the crab. Khepri could have sworn the giant crab's eye stalks shifted as if widening in surprise, a level of intelligent realization within it the catbug had not been expecting. Were these mutations created by mankind, passed down knowledge compared to how Prometheus in myth had done for humanity? Borrowing from his school of running towards things Khepri kept their feet beneath them and went straight towards the threat despite the fact that every inch of the evil crab's being had focused on killing them the instant the shark had let go. Jumping up at the last second to avoid the larger of the crab's claws as it tried to crush her Khepri kept enough momentum to jam the pike deep into the gap between the thing's rostrum and carapace. The loud screech the beast let out surprised them. They'd heard from some local fishermen back home that crabs couldn't feel pain. Khepri wondered whether the newfound mutation had changed that. "Are you feeling it now, Mr. Krabs?"
The only reply they got was a swipe of its shorter claw. Sticking the landing their momentum had set in motion they rammed the pike deeper while knocking the strike off course with the back of their fishing rod. A wooden crack told them exactly how that'd affected their future plan. Unfortunately for the catbug it was knowledge that came a little too late. Lamenting the loss of their rod they stayed on top of the crab as it was slammed back into the railing and stopped moving, only just now spotting the army of smaller crabs. Given that they'd been following the big one they were likely affected by the mutations as well. Khepri's mind once more wondered whether they had some kind of Prometheus-like figure that gifted them the fire of knowledge and whether they'd come to worship it for doing so. Holding onto the pike for support they straightened upon the corpse of the massive crab and looked down at the crowd of its smaller brethren. "Who is your god now?"

Khepri was mastering the art of sitting so still they appeared invisible. There was no evidence it would work but so far it seemed promising. They'd been sitting at the same table as Ryusei for several minutes now and still hadn't been noticed. It was rare that Khepri found a skill they were good at from the first try but perhaps they'd finally struck gold. All that remained to be seen was how effective it was. Did it only stop them from being seen if they remained still or did it extend to other senses as well? "If I talk do you think I exist?" Khepri said out of nowhere, attentively waiting to see whether Ryusei would answer. They were curious whether they'd get a response. If he stayed silent Khepri truly would have mastered the technique in one go, but even if he spoke up the catbug would still be well on the way to discovering a skill they never knew they had; Or wanted for that matter.

Kicking off the railing Khepri pulled with all their strength. The taut fishing line was stretched to its limit and the rod bent almost double. Had it not been for the pair of hands on their shoulders helping them Khepri was sure they wouldn't have been able to pull it out. Or the pair on their arms for that matter. The pair of hands on their sides certainly helped out a lot too. "We're getting it! Thanks for the help, Jouma. Thanks for the help, many armed tiger shark!" Khepri gratefully shouted with a wide smile. As the grips tightened and kept pulling along with Khepri while they held on tightly to the rod they blinked in realization. "Wait a minute!"Looking behind themself with wide eyes they stared straight into the sharp-toothed maw of the predator that had dragged itself partway out of the water, half-stuck between the boat and the pier on the other side of the bow. "You're not a tiger shark, you're a great white! Sorry!"Their mistake corrected Khepri struggled for traction to continue acquiring their lifetime supply of... crabs? That wasn't right, they were here for fish! Even so they couldn't let go of the rod -they still needed that to get fish!- so their hands clutched tightly around it even as their feet left the ground, their body the center of a tug of war between a giant crab and a mutated shark. This was quite the conundrum. "Help!" Khepri hissed out through teeth gritted in exertion, refusing to loosen their grip even as the crab was dragged on to the edge of boat and Khepri's back hit the guardrail on the other side, only the crab's shell catching on the same part of the railing that their ribs had been slammed into earlier preventing Khepri from finding out what the bottom of the ocean looked like.

The muted sounds of people shouting reached Khepri, distorted as if through water due to the buzzing in their ears and the loud thumping of their own heart. Why were they still talking? They were all rambling questions and asking for answers. How did any of those matter when someone just died? Khepri could still feel it. The turn of the earth. The ground beneath their feet spinning at a thousand miles an hour and the entire planet hurtling around the sun at sixty seven thousand miles an hour. They could feel it, they were falling through space, all of them, both Khepri themself and everyone else in the room. Clinging to the skin of their tiny little world. Rui had let go. Why? Logically she knew it was only natural that the world kept moving. Thousands of people died every day yet the planet was still spinning even after millennia of such tragic events. Emotionally putting one and one together was nearly impossible. The person in their arms wasn't moving. Their heart had stopped beating. Their memories were lost forever and a gap would be left in the lives of all who once knew them. How could the world still exist when reality was riddled in such gaping holes? Most importantly; Why? What was even the point? If something like this could happen. If something like this would just happen again. And again. And again and again and again, over and over until the end of time. Then why? She couldn't be brought back. Entropy was an inescapable truth. Once changed something could not be unchanged. Rui could never again be brought to her original state. Through the haze of tears the catbug could see something light up. Then a shock ran through them. Startled, Khepri opened her eyes and looked down at Rui. Dead eyes refused to stare back. Frozen in place with their eyes wide open they watched as Rui stood back up and walked away, sniffling sobs still intermittently racking their form. They could tell she wasn't alive. Not truly. It was impossible. Their eyes honed in on the wound and bile rose in their throat. With a gulp they forced it back down, transfixed on the figure moving away like a puppet on a string. Khepri barely noticed themself getting to their feet, seeing it almost as an outside observer, their thoughts and actions remaining almost entirely disconnected. Why weren't they stopping her? Why weren't they asking her what was going on? Whether they were alright, stupid as the question might be? Khepri didn't know. They scanned the area for any face they might recognize, grasping onto familiarity like a lifeline. Spotting the Masked Man they plodded after him, covered in blood and so pale they barely looked more alive than Rui. Idly a train of thought wondered what had happened to the Mushroom Man. Khepri hoped he was alright. Surely he was. They'd have known if something happened, right? Another sob wrenched its way out. They couldn't bear to think about it any more. Yet their new quirk would not let them abort the train of thought. Like a prisoner within their own mortal coil Khepri thought on, putting one foot in front of the other to keep going, hoping against all hope that this madness would end soon.

For the first time in their life Khepri had failed. Every single frame of what they saw was forever crystallized into their memory, their new quirk combined with the trauma of the situation reinforcing them in a feedback loop until there was no chance they would ever forget. At least that was how they felt. There was no way to know the future but Khepri would not be surprised if they saw these unfathomably fast yet infinitely long moments until the day they died. Perhaps all of a sudden without them being able to see it coming, through some gunman popping up behind them and- It was unfortunate that the parallel thought capabilities of their new quirk meant Khepri had no way to shut the thought down before it reached its conclusion. Not with the level of practice they possessed with it. Their body acted by itself when the mirrors began to close, almost causing Khepri to tumble to the ground once more when muscle memory warred with reversed reality. They found that it came rather easy to focus fully on taking manual control, their mind for once refraining from firing off trains of thought in all directions. Turning so they faced the mirror they sprinted through it and towards Rui as fast as they could. Khepri didn't need to turn around even once to check where she had fallen. They remembered. With one arm scooping up her shoulders and the other below her knees Khepri pulled them up, ignoring the wet sensation and heavy thump they felt against their back as they stood up. With the directions reversed it was easier to ignore what that was. They refused to think about it. Just one foot in front of the other. They kept their entire mind on making their way back to the mirror they'd entered from. Every step they had to adjust for the unfamiliar weight. The unfamiliar sway. It was only once you held someone like this that you noticed just how much living beings subconsciously leaned in when carried to prevent themselves from falling. Khepri didn't have that cooperation. Every step meant they almost toppled. They couldn't slow or they'd get trapped. Every mistaken motion was exasperated by the doll-like mass in their arms. They couldn't catch their breath or neither of their bodies would ever be found. Every single beat of their heart reminded them of the subtle difference. Of the fact that the person in their arms no longer had a heart beat. They were several steps past the mirror before they realized they were out. All strength drained out of Khepri the second they did. They collapsed onto their knees, eyes pressed shut and shaking all over. Someone laughed. It took them a while to recognize the voice. It was themself. Someone cried. That too took them a moment to recognize. Once more it was themself. Both sounds intermittently snuck out. Laughter amidst sobs and sniffles. Were their actions still reversed? Khepri didn't know. They couldn't tell. They simply broke down, too scared to open their eyes lest the memory would never leave them.

Khepri blinked in surprise as Jouma laughed and wiped away a tear. They couldn't help but wonder why he thought it worked like that. There was a specially inbuilt string to connect the bobber to the fishing rod, there was no way they could lose it and if they put bait on the hook where would the fish go once it's caught? They weren't trying to pull the bait back up, they were trying to get the fish! Still, ignorant as the man was he'd been nice enough to come along with them so Khepri wouldn't call him out on it. Why, they had just the perfect idea on how to make sure he didn't make a mistake without bruising his ego. "Yeah, for normal fish. Have you heard of everything weird going on at the beach recently? The normal fish all swam away. We can't use the right method for things out of the left-field. That's the wrong direction."Khepri knew plenty about directions. They'd tried to navigate using their moral compass once and arrived three days later than they'd intended. Using the right tool for the right job was very important. It was why Khepri really disliked the word goblet. How messed up was it that it meant 'cup' and not 'tiny goblin'? "Hmm? Nah, he was a dog trainer," Khepri confidently replied just before the rod was nearly janked out of their hands. "See! Got something already!" They hoped it wasn't another barrel with one of those funny marks of a circle with some cornerless triangles in it like the one she'd found when she tried to use a net to catch fish that one time. Even if they didn't think ENRRA would show up all the way here it was bound to be annoying. "Yeah, food!" Khepri agreed to the unknown catch's self-assessment. Then they stopped talking as the air was driven out of their lungs when they rammed chest-first into the railing. Their pupils dilated as their grip tightened on the rod and they strained against the railing to pull in a deep breath. "Jouma. On three we need to pull." Khepri's left foot left the ground and settled firmly against the second bar of the railing before her right one wedged just right against the third bar. Activating their quirk the muscles in their legs bulged as much as they could in the moment before Khepri would kick off backwards with as much force as they could manage. "Three!"

Khepri nodded in reply. That put a hitch in their plans but it was nothing insurmountable. After all, nothing said the man in question couldn't know how to fish already beforehand. "I'm gonna teach you anyway."
The fact that they didn't know how to do so themself was unimportant. After all, how hard could it be? There were thousands upon thousands in supermarkets across the globe every day and all of those had to be caught unless they decided to head to the supermarket voluntarily. Khepri didn't know why they'd do that but many things had taken them by surprise in the past and they'd seen people act against their own interests many times when someone sounded convincing enough so they couldn't rule it out entirely. "Right, you see this dangly hook thing on the end of the rope? That one's gonna go in the sea," they explained patiently as they stood near the edge of the still moored boat. "You're gonna wanna put it just deep enough in the water that this fancy red orb thingie floats on top of it. We need to be able to see that one to know if any fishes bit so make sure you don't throw it so deep that it's underwater unless you have some kind of special sight."Khepri wondered if he had. They couldn't rule it out. His muscles made him look older so he might just have mastered this adult super vision thing Khepri had heard about but couldn't quite figure out how to do yet. They squinted at the water. Nope, still couldn't do it. Putting that matter aside they continued their explanation as they reached back and swung the rod hard enough for the hook to fly out and hit the water. "Then we just wait for them to be lured in," the catbug explained as they picked up a handful of bait and threw it at the bobbing red orb above where their hook had hit the water so they could lure the fish towards it. With that settled they decided to make some casual conversation while waiting. "Oh yeah, I'm Khepri. Mafdet Khepri," they added upon realizing they'd forgotten to reply to his introduction while they were walking to the beach. Khepri blamed the crabs and their inability to use vending machines. "Do you think Pavlov thought about feeding his dogs when he heard a bell ring?

Khepri was tasering away at the mirrors in French until Not-Rui addressed her. A feeling similar yet different to the one Khepri had felt 27 hours ago went through them again. This one was shorter but hurt far more. Fear overtook them. Last time they lost their exoskeleton, ears and tail while gaining two fingers, toes and different ears. They looked down and saw what's up. Then they looked up and saw only their own hair. They had no mouth but still screamed. It was a silent scream, one that twisted the catbug's expression but produced no sound. From the corner of their eye they saw Not-Rui run away from them and heard her taunts but they were far too busy freaking out to contemplate whether the blonde's words were still reversed. Raising their left hand to check their face their breath hitched -causing them to exhale deeply instead- when they failed to see it appear in their line of sight and something simultaneously hit their left leg. Panicking at the sudden attack that sent lightning coursing through them Khepri went down flailing, unaware that opening their hand and trying to check their face had caused her other arm's fist to clench around the taser and hit it against their leg instead. The back of their head hitting the ground hurt their face. It would have made sense what with their line of sight making them believe they hit the ground face first but they can feel their nose hurt just as much as the rest around it. Had that hit the ground first it would have either broken completely or caused their head to tilt when it hit the floor. There was no way the pain was spread that evenly. Not without the very specific circumstances of the waffle batter incident of 2097. Something was off. Khepri went still. They focused entirely on that deduction to refrain from panicking any further, getting lost in their thoughts instead and staring at nothing through empty eyes. Their mind churned. Once they took a moment to think about everything it wasn't difficult to figure out what the cause was. This had to be another variant or evolution of the reversed words. It helped that they'd had a similar theory before. Their senses had been reversed. Had their actions been reversed too? Khepri brought her left hand down and raised it once more. Feeling the pain of their arm slamming into the ground provided the final piece of data that confirmed the theory. Putting their new quirk to use to process all of the feedback they had to deal with and keep track of the necessary motions Khepri slowly pushed themself up. Behind them they could see where Mushroom Man had chased after Not-Rui moments ago, their memories combined with their new processing speed allowing them to deduce what happened and which direction they headed in. From the other sounds they heard they figured there were bigger problems to deal with however. It took time and several immediate, minute adjustments to get themself back upright but before long Khepri managed to regain some modicum of mobility. Not enough to be at full or even half efficiency but enough to defend themself in a pinch. Turning their waist and head so the back of it was facing where they were looking before they fell Khepri took in the disastrous scene taking place on the other side of the mirror. Their heart dropped and they froze in place once more. Was that them attacking Not-Rui alongside Mushroom Man and Masked Man? But Masked Man was right there and Mushroom Man and Not-Rui had ran off in the opposite direction? Was what they was now a reversed scene of the three of them leaving Not-Rui alone or was this truly happening? There was far too much going on for them to both figure it out, make use of their quirk to parse their scrambled senses and actions as well as intervene in time. Their mind ran through all the steps it would take. While it did so Khepri stood frozen in place. Whether it was for a moment or an eternity Khepri had not the capacity to find out. All they knew was the longer it took them to figure out what to do the lower their chances of success became.
TL;DR: Khepri's merry electrocuting is interrupted by their world getting turned upside down and they drop, taking a moment to figure out what is going on and straining to stand back up. When they do they spot what is going on, wonder whether it's real and freeze in place trying to figure out what to do about it. Tags: Rui Matsui, Matsu, facade
