Half empty or full... "I don't know, I just got here," the catbug eloquently replied. Maybe it was the fae. If anyone could give a mid-air haircut in the blink of an eye it was t- wait didn't the rest of Michi look a bit different too?
Nodding along happily to Michi Michimi Michirou's explanation Khepri tried to make sure they remembered which name to use when. Names were both important and not. They were a container in a way, one that could contain who you were but didn't have to if you didn't want it to. Khepri didn't know whether Michi wanted that or not so they'd make sure to try and use the right name at the right time. It wasn't hard to remember three names. Michi, Minichi and Michirows. No, wait, that wasn't it. Furrowing their brow for a moment they called the memory back while pedaling along and internalized the right names this time.
"Yes, yes and yes," Khepri happily responded. All three of those in fact. They were part cat, part bug, part cat-bug and part normal human. Just like they were riding a part bike, part glider and part glider bike. That was probably how it worked. Words were silly and Khepri had long stopped trying to figure them out exactly. It happened when they were trying to figure out themself in fact.
Long, long ago back when they were a little thing Khepri had looked at how much horsepower a horse had and found out they had about fifteen horsepower. At that point Khepri knew definitions were wack and they didn't need to be a girl, a boy or something in between. They could just be Khepri. Some bits cat, some bits bug, some bits catbug, some bits human but all of them Khepri. That was what really mattered.
"Look, it's the finish line! I think!" Khepri shouted as they saw something notable in front of them. A white line perpendicular to the course running the entire length of the road. That had to be it, right? Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. Only one way to find out!

Half empty or full... Khepri could smell colors. Well, they couldn't really but that sure was what it felt like. Their heart thudded loudly in their chest and for a moment the irrational fear that they'd see what was behind them instead of what was in front of them struck. They blinked once and confirmed it wasn't so, then a second time to make sure again.
The moment the start bell rang they were off, first with the leg that wasn't tied together, a flick of her eye making sure it'd land at the same time as Farrin's foot, and then with the other at the same time as his. Staying in sync like that required more thinking than expected but it didn't take long before their body took over without needing too much of their input.
"Space moves in relation to time," Khepri nodded in agreement. That was troublesome as it might just mean they'd be able to stay ahead of them. Unless… "Time itself is relative according to speed. If we run faster maybe we can outrun space." Khepri didn't think they were dense enough to make their own gravitational field so that should work out. Maybe they should check to be sure though. "Teach, are we too dense?"
Well, either way it was worth a try. With one of their legs tied to Farrin's they couldn't quite soften their exoskeleton to expand the muscles further but their other leg could still kick off with their full force every other step. It might be more leapfrogging than running when done like that but above all else it was efficient. Why, the world around them was a veritable blur!

Half empty or full... What goes on four feet in the morning, two feet in midday, and three feet in the evening? It was a traditional riddle associated with the mythological being Khepri had picked for their hero name. Given that they'd fallen out of bed in the morning, walked to the Sports Festival and now had their leg tied to Farrin's they wondered just how long this race was going to take. Looking up at the sun it seemed a fair bit away from evening.
"I'm okay with that!" Khepri cheerfully responded before adding a question of their own. "What does it do?" They remembered from Stellar's class that it had to do with time but they didn't remember the details. Once Farrin explained Khepri listened attentively and nodded along.
"Alright, ready!" The start signal hadn't gone off yet but Khepri was rearing to go either way. Their quirk made them well suited to adjusting to sudden bursts of speeds so what could possibly go wrong?

This one! It took a bit of peering into each entrance before they spotted a familiar indent where they'd pilfered a shiny rock from the side of a tunnel but Khepri had finally found their way back out of the claustrophobia inducing side tunnel system they were in and back to one that was a bit spacier.
Idly their eyes scanned the cave floor for anything they might have missed before diving down to snag a little shiny shard. With a bit of effort they just narrowly managed to add it to their bulging pouch. Hmm, that did it. There really wasn't any room for anything else in there now. Well, not rocks at least. Fine pebbles would fit and after the fine pebbles they could still fit in sand after which they- Oh! There was already water in there so that they wouldn't need to add to fully fill it.
Kicking off the ground they raised their head just in time to take a geyser to the face.
End over end they tumbled, their leg slamming into a wall on their way up as they tried and failed to fight the current. Spotting a light at the end of the tunnel as they span Khepri jammed their nails into the rim of the entrance leading upwards, rock digging into their palm while the current slammed their back against the ceiling. Well, at least that meant most of the geyser was passing below them now. Shaking their head and taking stock of the situation their other hand joined the first and by their efforts combined pulled the catbug up.
Home free they were! Swimming upwards their head breached the surface and they quickly took off the rebreather to take a few deep breaths!
"Pah!"
At least their pouch was still just as good as they'd remembered. It'd stayed shut through all of that! With a happy smile on their face Khepri got out of the water and made her way over to someone to ask where they needed to turn in their rocks. Their heart still thumped loudly in their chest. For a moment there they'd really panicked but it'd all turned out fine in the end. Khepri's smile widened. Time to see if the next event went just as well!

The easy, fun times could not last forever. Permanence was a myth after all, yet Khepri had not imagined they would faze trials and tribulations in this way.
Their pouch was full.
It was a tragedy. Each rock contained within had accompanied them on their journey through the cave system like a true friend, yet what made the calamity even worse was what sat in front of them. A Black Opal. It probably wasn't a real one but during their binge reading sessions on minerals, crystals and geology they'd come across images of black opals that looked quite similar to this one so it was probably intended to represent one.
Khepri's ears drooped as they looked from their left hand to their right, then back to their left and back to their right again. They'd been repeating this process for half a minute now and were still no closer to making a choice. Jonathan had been with them the longest, the piece of Agate being one of the first they'd picked out of a cave wall when they'd started swimming. It'd been a happenstance, a true coincidence like in an anime. Crossing a corner they'd ran face first into each other and he'd been accompanying them ever since. On the other hand the chunk of Pyrite by the name of Becky had only just joined them. Like a new joinee itching to prove themself Becky had fallen right on top of Khepri's head with an eagerness that had yet to be worn down by the cold, hard reality of this world. To leave either of them here despite their efforts...
Underwater no one could see the tears spilling from your eyes.
Sniffling into their rebreather Khepri made a decision. They'd be overencumbered but if they took the matter into their own hands they could carry them a-
Oh was that a Sapphire they spotted in the corner there? Dropping both rocks Khepri snatched the Black Opal before heading over to the Sapphire as well and adding it to their collection. Yup, that should be everything they need. Now they just had to get back to the surface, easy peasy. They just needed to...
Which of these four tunnels had they come from again?

Half empty or full... Wings! They didn't know bikes had those these days. Then again Khepri rarely went biking, bikes were very difficult to get through houses and across rooftops. Usually they just ended up slowing you down. Sure, they could get a foldable one but there were at least three times already that Khepri had thought they'd had a foldable bike but then it just broke instead. Oh right big pit ahead. Yoinking the handle of their bike up and leaning back wings took precedence over wheels and off they were, soaring over the pit while still pedaling at a consistent speed. They didn't know if it did anything but there was no reason not to try. There was a brief 'thonk' as they landed on the other side and the glider wings folded themselves back into the bike."Oh, I'm one person. I'm half bug, half cat and half human though so maybe I'm one and a half people." That was an interesting thought. They knew some people were half the person another was but they hadn't really heard about someone being a person and a half yet. They'd need to read up on that later. "What names do you have and- Oh! Did you change your hair?" It was polite to comment on someone getting a haircut from what Khepri knew and although they had no idea when Michi might have gotten one it sure did look different than the last time they met.
Cresting another hill the track seemed to have a few more pits, except this time the path leading to each pit split. On the left was a straighter path for big wheels to bounce off and on the right was a ramp to make proper use of the glider. Khepri's bike shifted from blue to spotted purple that spread in a pinkish way and finally turned mostly red as they glided over one pit after the other, a wide smile on their face the whole time.
At this rate they'd be at the finish line in no time! ...Is all perspective

Oooh~
This one looked red. Probably. It felt red at least when they ran their fingers over it, which was really all they had to go off when it came to colors in this dark cave. Stuffing the shiny rock into their special underwater pouch -that they'd owned from that time they went snorkeling as a kid back home- Khepri continued their search.
Squinting and holding another stone up to the one stream of light that penetrated past the twists and turns leading to the small hollow they were in right now Khepri carefully turned it over to look at it from all angles. It looked like any rock you could find by running a net through a lake. For all intents and purposes it was the most normal, least special rock imaginable. Khepri knew better though. The planet was more than four billion years old and a great many rocks had spent that entire time without being held or even seen by humans. Not this one though. This one had been brought all the way to UAU and was now being held by them. There weren't many rocks that could say that, not even if they were capable of speaking. This was the 1% of rocks, no, the 0.01% of rocks. That seemed pretty valuable to Khepri.
Stuffing it into their pouch as well they dug through another loose pile, failing to notice the diamond briefly glinting in the light as they flucked it away, before finally locating another thing. "Ooh, quartz!" They said to no one in specific, both because they were very isolated down here and because their words weren't understandable through their rebreather.
That was probably all this section had. Wriggling and pushing against the cave walls so they could turn themselves around Khepri set off for the next target. This was such a nice and relaxing event for once.
They hoped everyone else was having a good time too.

Exoskeleton floated. That was a bit of a problem when you were supposed to go collect things far underwater but Khepri supposed it was better to figure that out now than when someone fell overboard during some kind of island adventure and they had to go rescue them. Luckily there was an easy solution to the problem. Bricks didn't float. So it was that with one towel-wrapped brick tied to each arm Khepri put on their rebreather and sank beneath the waveless water. They were looking forward to this. If there was anything that Khepri could be said to be an expert at it was getting into places they shouldn't be and finding all manner of 'interesting' objects. Why, this event practically had their name written all over it!
Well, it literally had their name written on it. There was a sign-up sheet. But that's not the point.
Setting aside their questions on why they were buoyant when they were only half ant and no buoy Khepri's gaze darted all over to find shinies. The balloon event had been difficult what with their partial red-green colorblindness but their catlike mutation did lend them the unique advantage of being able to see just a bit better in the dark. Spotting something glittering out of the corner of their eye Khepri darted towards it. Oh, this was going to be fun!

Half empty or full... Khepri was realizing that they'd made a big mistake. They'd gotten it all wrong. Ylva wasn't trying to motivate them to win. Seeing all the hailstones drop that conclusion finally set in. Yes, tying with them wasn't Ylva's goal here.
Khepri's eyes sparkled. It was much bigger than that! She was right, this event wasn't what Khepri should be focusing on. It was a means to an end. Ylva was completely right. They'd gotten too caught up on winning here when what they should really be focusing on was using this to improve in order to better their future.
"「Splitting the Atum」"
The words were whispered under their breath, more as a way to lock in to the right mindset than out of any real need. Precision, dexterity, being at the right place at the right time. Those were the things Khepri had been trying to improve on. Chasing, tracking and hitting the balloons before moving on were just a means to an end.
For the next few seconds there was no thinking, only focus. Hands darted to and fro smashing into as many of the hailstones as they could. They weren't keeping count. Such things were only relevant in the aftermath and the aftermath wasn't what Khepri was training for. No, what they wanted was to be there in the moment itself. To make sure it went right. That no one else died when they could have prevented it. Their movements were entirely by instincts, their legs moving almost independently from their arms yet creating a whole that was greater than its parts.
Then suddenly it was over.
Gravity had won out and the hail clattered onto the ground forever leaving it impossible to tell which Khepri had hit and which they hadn't. The taste almost felt acidic in their mouth, like it was telling them their efforts were all for nought and the same results would have presented themselves even if they hadn't been there. Khepri didn't like that thought. It was an important one though. As they were now it might well be true. They had to get stronger. Better.
"Good match, senior!" Khepri turned to Ylva with the cheeriest, most genuine smile. “I'll repay this one day, I promise.” The catbug added with no idea how threatening that sounded, especially with their predatory instincts still winding down, causing their pupils to be just a bit too wide and their smile to show a hint of teeth

"Nice to meet you too!" It truly was. They wasn't sure whether they'd make two friends in a single cycling event or one friend every other cycling event what with how unclear the definition of the prefix 'bi-' was. Hmm, that did beg the question. "Machida-san, how many people are you?"Depending on that they might just be making one more friend before this race was over. Reaching the top of the hill just a little bit behind Michi they got a full view of the pit at the bottom before gleefully following them. They knew this one! They'd seen it before in a movie, the pit probably wasn't real and it was just a test of courage. Without a doubt in their mind they pedaled harder and harder, only briefly looking at their slightly wobbly steering wheel. Oh hey a button. Sort of. Switch, button, same thing. Bringing a finger to it and flicking one they wondered what it did. |

Half empty or full... "What's up?" The question that was the start of many puns yet this time Khepri had spoken it entirely as intended. When both of Ylva's hands raised Khepri looked up as well to see if she could figure out what she was pointing at. Last time a lot of balloons had fallen all at once in a big bundle but that didn't seem like it was the case right now, at least not in the direction Khepri was looking. Ah! They couldn't let themself get distracted like that. Maybe Ylva was just saying they had 'this big' of a lead right now and that they needed to hurry and catch up. Nodding to themself they agreed that that just might be it.
Doubling the amount of effort they put into it by finding an entire second wind they didn't know they still had Khepri flitted from place to place like a graceful butterfly without wings or antenna and stung like a bee without a stinger or mandibles. They did have an exoskeleton though and that had to count for something. The hair on the back of their neck stood up, ears twitching like there was something itchy on it. Hmm, what was that feeling? It almost felt like that brief moment when a rollercoaster reached the top and began its descent. There was no rollercoaster here though, they were pretty sure they'd notice if they were in one and they didn't think they were below one either. Just in case they looked up to check.
Uh oh.

Half empty or full... "Fourteen now!" Khepri shouted once more. It was important to keep each other updated, how else would they be able to get each other to push past their limits. They knew Ylva was just trying to be nice and help them but that didn't mean they couldn't try to do the same for them. "Fif- nevermind!" That one popped right in front of them before they could get to it.
"Senior, how many are you on?" The catbug asked loudly before looking around. Just going from one balloon to the next might not be the best idea they were beginning to realize. Last time they'd won by going for a big cluster together with Michael. There didn't seem to be any right now but if they plotted a path and calculated how fast balloons would fall they may be able to just follow a pre-planned route instead of having to search for a new target each time. They nodded to themself, their plan made. It was simple and concise.
Yearn for victory, you had to want to win to give it your all. Learn how to win, if you chased the trees you were bound to miss the forest. Verify that you made the right plan for what you need to deal with, every situation needed its own special touch. Act decisively, for hesitation only led to defeat.
They called it the Y.L.V.A. method and there was no way it wouldn't work. With their eyes flicking from one target to the next they discarded a route and then another before third time was the charm. Muscles bunching they zoomed from one to the other, tagging a grand total of twenty one red balloons and only one green one -not that they knew- in less than a minute. "Thirty six! Senior, are you winning yet or am I right now?"

Even sitting down they still felt tense, their heart beating a mile a minute and their throat still a bit sore from the panicked return from the forest. They couldn't be sure that what they'd seen wasn't still following them, nor could they be sure there was nothing else.
Every time they blinked they just saw Yoko covered in blood, the image displayed vividly on the inside of their eyelids.
They couldn't drop their guard yet. "Let's do it," Khepri said without a moment of hesitation, the reminder that Nat was there too alleviating their worries a little bit but not enough to calm down. They didn't know how strong Nat was nor whether she'd arrive in time if, if something… Khepri swallowed as they seemed to choke on something despite not having eaten anything. "I'm okay. Nothing hurt me." Even as they spoke they realized their mistake, how could they have been so stupid! Their eyes left the surroundings immediately to look right at Yoko. She was hurt, Khepri had seen it, how could they just sit here? "Not real? Huh?" Was this a dream, no, a nightmare maybe? Was Yoko their subconscious trying to get them to wake up?
Their other hand came up to pinch their cheek. Ow! Not a nightmare. Something else then. "Oh, a trick?" Khepri asked with a tilt of their head, face flushing as they suddenly felt profoundly stupid. Of course. Spirits pulled all kinds of tricks. They even knew how dangerous those could be and if the stories they had heard about Kitsune were anything to go by fox spirits could be particularly tricky.
Only then did they really see Yoko without the filter of their overwhelming fear. There was no blood. She was alright. Just in case Khepri quickly looked her over, eyes flicking from the top of her head to the tip of her shoes and back. She was really alright. Tension left the catbug like water spilling from a popped balloon. Almost immediately they looked like they might have very well gotten soaked by it, their ears flattening against their head, their shoulders sagging and their torso leaning forward just a little bit. Anxiety and caution had faded paving the way for the delayed wave of exhaustion to finally hit them, their wired senses beginning to spool down as they let out a long yawn.
Shaking their head in response they accepted the cigarette without even a second thought. Or a first, the idea of refusing something Yoko gave them never even occurring. Looking down at it Khepri turned the cigarette over and looked at it from every angle while considering Yoko's words. They'd never felt like that, Khepri convinced themself even as their eyes briefly glazed over, but if it helped Yoko they wanted to know what it did. Bringing it close to their mouth they looked back at Yoko.
"I don't have anything to light this and i'm not fast enough yet to do it myself."

Half empty or full... Khepri knew what Ylva was trying to say. With a happy nod that showed they completely understood they turned on their heel and sauntered off. Only so many balloons dropped per place, if they were to both win it was better to spread out.
Yes, Khepri understood perfectly. They had aunts and uncles that tried to motivate them like this too. She didn't like them and they weren't going to win? It sounded mean but that was just some people's way of motivating someone to win. The almost-promise that they'd like them if they won. Khepri felt warmth deep in their chest, so much so that it canceled out the tightness they felt there for some reason. It showed that someone cared so much about them they wanted to convince them to do well even if they had to say words that felt like knives in one's mouth.
They would make sure they didn't disappoint. The moment the start signal ran Khepri's leg muscles swelled and they leapt for the first balloon that entered their line of sight, nails popping it and then the next and the one after too. They were pretty sure that all three of those had been red. Other people had been going for them too after all! Mixing speed and safety Khepri dashed from balloon to balloon, waiting until someone else tried to get it before covering the last bit of distance and popping it.
“Senior, I'm on eleven! How many did you pop?”
