Even sitting down they still felt tense, their heart beating a mile a minute and their throat still a bit sore from the panicked return from the forest. They couldn't be sure that what they'd seen wasn't still following them, nor could they be sure there was nothing else.
Every time they blinked they just saw Yoko covered in blood, the image displayed vividly on the inside of their eyelids.
They couldn't drop their guard yet. "Let's do it," Khepri said without a moment of hesitation, the reminder that Nat was there too alleviating their worries a little bit but not enough to calm down. They didn't know how strong Nat was nor whether she'd arrive in time if, if something… Khepri swallowed as they seemed to choke on something despite not having eaten anything. "I'm okay. Nothing hurt me." Even as they spoke they realized their mistake, how could they have been so stupid! Their eyes left the surroundings immediately to look right at Yoko. She was hurt, Khepri had seen it, how could they just sit here? "Not real? Huh?" Was this a dream, no, a nightmare maybe? Was Yoko their subconscious trying to get them to wake up?
Their other hand came up to pinch their cheek. Ow! Not a nightmare. Something else then. "Oh, a trick?" Khepri asked with a tilt of their head, face flushing as they suddenly felt profoundly stupid. Of course. Spirits pulled all kinds of tricks. They even knew how dangerous those could be and if the stories they had heard about Kitsune were anything to go by fox spirits could be particularly tricky.
Only then did they really see Yoko without the filter of their overwhelming fear. There was no blood. She was alright. Just in case Khepri quickly looked her over, eyes flicking from the top of her head to the tip of her shoes and back. She was really alright. Tension left the catbug like water spilling from a popped balloon. Almost immediately they looked like they might have very well gotten soaked by it, their ears flattening against their head, their shoulders sagging and their torso leaning forward just a little bit. Anxiety and caution had faded paving the way for the delayed wave of exhaustion to finally hit them, their wired senses beginning to spool down as they let out a long yawn.
Shaking their head in response they accepted the cigarette without even a second thought. Or a first, the idea of refusing something Yoko gave them never even occurring. Looking down at it Khepri turned the cigarette over and looked at it from every angle while considering Yoko's words. They'd never felt like that, Khepri convinced themself even as their eyes briefly glazed over, but if it helped Yoko they wanted to know what it did. Bringing it close to their mouth they looked back at Yoko.
"I don't have anything to light this and i'm not fast enough yet to do it myself."

Half empty or full... Khepri knew what Ylva was trying to say. With a happy nod that showed they completely understood they turned on their heel and sauntered off. Only so many balloons dropped per place, if they were to both win it was better to spread out.
Yes, Khepri understood perfectly. They had aunts and uncles that tried to motivate them like this too. She didn't like them and they weren't going to win? It sounded mean but that was just some people's way of motivating someone to win. The almost-promise that they'd like them if they won. Khepri felt warmth deep in their chest, so much so that it canceled out the tightness they felt there for some reason. It showed that someone cared so much about them they wanted to convince them to do well even if they had to say words that felt like knives in one's mouth.
They would make sure they didn't disappoint. The moment the start signal ran Khepri's leg muscles swelled and they leapt for the first balloon that entered their line of sight, nails popping it and then the next and the one after too. They were pretty sure that all three of those had been red. Other people had been going for them too after all! Mixing speed and safety Khepri dashed from balloon to balloon, waiting until someone else tried to get it before covering the last bit of distance and popping it.
“Senior, I'm on eleven! How many did you pop?”

”Yes,” Sphinx heard themself respond. Different types of ears could all belong to the same species. They themself had no ears on the side of their head eithe- Oh, was that what Yoko meant? Had she seen the bears’ ears somewhere else? Even as their mind ran through such a train of thought their body moved, slower and with less precision than it should have, not to mention without the link between mind and body that could have let them make use of that realization, but in the right direction nonetheless.
“Khepri…”
A word pierced through the haze. It was one they knew but the meaning didn't matter right now. What mattered was making sure Yoko got out of here safely. Everything el- ”Khepri.” Was it important after all? As roving eyes tried to pierce the fog Sphinx blinked, the disconnect between train of thought and course of action shrinking while the word began to filter through their perception.
When arms wrapped around them they tensed and nearly lashed out before they recognised the feeling. It wasn't difficult. Only two people had ever done this to them. Almost immediately Khepri's breathing steadied.
“Okay,” they echoed while protectively wrapping their arms around Yoko as well, their eyes scanning the treeline around them all the while. “No. Not yet. You'll get back safely, I promise.” Reluctantly one arm separated from Yoko as they began to walk, ready to block or strike whatever may come at them. They didn't see anything in the fog but that was what made caution all the more important. People weren't scared of being alone in scary places, they were scared that they weren't alone in scary places.
“We'll get back safely together.” Khepri softly spoke again, almost like a mantra meant as much for themself as for Yoko. Their other hand found Yoko's hand once more and grasped it tightly. They weren't planning to let go. Not until they got back. Not until they were safe. Maybe never.

Half empty or full... Khepri nodded in understanding. If you just read the papers and didn't look at the pictures you wouldn't know him. Khepri had heard it said that a picture said a thousand words but they hadn't found out how to hear them yet, usually when they focused on any picture they just heard music. A gasp escaped them when they saw the passageway opening. A secret tunnel! They could count on one hand how many times they'd seen one of those without having to dig it themself and given that they only had four fingers that wasn't a lot. With a thumbs up they fished out their phone and began to dial the police.
"Hello?" ... "No, this is Sphinx." ... "We found a secret base belonging to the guy from the news." ... "The one with the mustache." ... "Oh, that's the two of us." ... "It's on the island we ended up on after our boat sank." ... "Okay, I have my beeper. I'll ping the coordinates!"
Clicking the 'end call' button and pinging the tracker on their second phone to get the coordinates before finally sending a text to the officer they'd just called Khepri looked up just in time to hear Jouma's question.
"I just got off the phone with the police," Khepri explained before they answered said question. "No, it's called commandeering and we can just let them know where we left it.” It was a good thing they'd just seen a documentary on that law. Khepri just hoped the cops they'd called weren't as clumsy as the one they saw on the TV.
Stepping onto the boat they blinked in surprise when there was just a screen with a smiley on it instead of a steering wheel. Muttering to themself with a frown they vocalized their inner inquiry. "How does this move?" To their surprise the smiley on the screen started moving and a feminine voice resounded from the speaker next to the screen along with its animation.
“Welcome, new temporary owner. I am happy to announce I have no illegal cargo on board for the first time in 27 trips. Where would you like to depart to?”
That was a good question. "Where are we going?" Khepri asked Jouma with a tilt of their head. They weren't quite sure which part of Tokyo they should head to, the coast was nice but that wasn't where their dorm was.

Nodding in response to Michi's words Khepri looked down at their bike while pedaling. Blue. That meant going forward was the right thing to do it seemed. The thought that Michi might be wrong or even worse, lying, didn't even cross Khepri's mind. "It might be purple." After all purple was a mix of red and blue, the colors of stop and going forward. That would mean going backwards right? After all, if it was just stop going forward they could use red for that so the extra clarification must be for more emphasis as to the opposite.
Swerving around a pile-up right around a corner near the bottom of a hill their avoidance of the students that had crashed and were shouting at each other had brought the catbug a bit closer to Michi. Hmm, they knew what to do. When you got closer to someone you were supposed to introduce yourself. As Khepri began to pedal up the hill they turned to face her.
"Hi, I'm Khepri. Who are you?"
Surely they had a moment to chat as they weathered the climb. There was no way there'd be anything bothersome coming into view the moment they reached the top of the hill, would there? Naaaaah.

Half empty or full... Khepri wasn't sure how they got back here again. One moment they were walking away to get a drink and the next they were here again and taking part in the balloon popping a second time. Well, Khepri wasn't going to complain. They did pop well after all, maybe they could even win a second time.
"Ylv- Senior?" Khepri blinked slowly as they spotted their white-haired senior. They hadn't talked to them much since the day tha- Their eyes lost focus for a second before Khepri blinked twice and was back to normal. They remembered now. Ylva had said they weren't friends yet. That made this the perfect opportunity to become it!
"Last time I won with someone else too so maybe we can both win this time," Khepri shouted at them with a broad smile and a wave, completely ignorant to how arrogant of a statement that was as well as how it made the surrounding competitors look at them -both Khepri themself and Ylva as well-. Their tail happily waved behind them. How or why it happened didn't matter, coming back here was the best thing that could have happened. This was going to be great!

Khepri refused to let go of Yoko's hand. Ever since they'd gotten out of the forest the catbug hadn't budged an inch, sticking right next to Yoko with their head on a swivel. Until they were back safe and sound Khepri stayed on guard. There wasn't going to be the slightest risk of danger, they wouldn't allow it. Not again. Every so often Khepri squeezed Yoko's hand just to make sure she was still there. Other times she leaned closer so their shoulders touched. Sometimes they even used their tail to check.
Rarely their eyes though. Even if they hadn't realized it deep inside they were still afraid of what they'd see if they looked. It was still time to make sure Yoko got back safely. They couldn't afford to break right now, not yet. Later. Not now. That brought up a new problem though. What if she wasn't safe in the dorms? How would Khepri be able to make sure?
"Maybe I can just move in." The catbug mused out loud. It seemed as good of a solution as any. They really, really, really didn't want to separate from Yoko right now.

Half empty or full... What had two wheels and could drive all over the place? It was a question with many answers and Khepri had found one of them. It would be a wonder if they hadn't, after all, they were sitting on it right now. Turning to the participant next to them as the countdown to start ticked down from ten to nine Khepri couldn't wait for the race to start.
"Do you know which way we're going?" Khepri didn't think backwards was the answer but apparently the race came with two gimmicks on the bike so it wasn't impossible. Maybe that was why the bike they were on shifted colors sometimes. Khepri knew a bit about traffic laws. Red meant stop, green meant go forwards. They hadn't found out yet which color meant go backwards so they'd need to keep an eye on that. "Which color turns people around?" They asked as well just as the start signal resounded and they were off.
Seeing the crowd move forward Khepri began to pedal as well. Forward seemed to be the way to go for now. That was nice and easy. With some luck it'd stay that easy for the entire race.

"Woooow," Khepri exclaimed with wide eyes. They'd never met an expert lockpick before. Well, they thought they never did but they'd met Jouma before so clearly they had. Hmm. Was it possible they'd met other expert lockpicks before? They should ask people if they knew how to pick locks and break into places one by one. The older you were the more likely you were to have learned more, right? Yeah, that made sense. They'd start by asking the UAU faculty members they knew.
"Quickly, let's get inside!" Khepri shouted before answering, rushing into the room that was a mix between a manager's office and a security control room. "I'll close the door behind us!"
Picking it up from the floor Khepri put it back in place before finally answering Jouma's question. The door toppled right out the other side as they did.
"I don't know I just got here."
That was when they spotted the wall directly left of the door. It had a very simple golden plate at the top with the words 'Employee of the month' on it while the rest of the wall was taken up by pictures. All different pictures, sure, but of the same person.
"Isn't that the scientist from the news that got arrested for the sealife incident?" Khepri asked while looking at Jouma and pointing at the wall. "Should we call the police?"

"If she wanted to be," Khepri nodded in agreement. Spirits could be whatever or whoever they pleased. "Hmm, I think you're right I can't see one either." Not that Khepri had ever thought Yoko was wrong of course.
"That's good," Khepri agreed. "Quitting halfway means you find something else. That can be good but I think we're going to find what we want like this." Commitment was important and Khepri was ready for it. Even if they themself didn't entirely realize it.
"No, you're here too," Khepri said absent-mindedly while looking around at the fog, unaware of their own innocent honesty. How could they be afraid while Yoko was here? Their chest tightened for a moment as the face of another blonde appeared in the fog for the blink of an eye, there and gone again before the catbug could even tell who it was. Probably just a mirage.
Hmm, Hebiru? What would the school nurse be doing he-
"Bears without ears!" Khepri shouted back over their shoulder as they cast a glance back at the school nurse. It was but a moment. Just a second. A turn there and a turn back. When they faced Yoko once more blood was streaming down her head. They heard themself speak more than they felt themself speak, their sense of self compartmentalized and replaced entirely with a need for action.
"Not again." Not Yoko.
The catbug was pushing her away from the scene before their thoughts caught up, their own form between Yoko and the threat while they followed after her, eyes wide in a predatory stare and mouth half open displaying their teeth as a threat to anything that might approach.
They were no longer Mafdet Khepri. What they were now was 'Sphinx', or perhaps what Sphinx could become. An engine with a single-minded purpose, to save and protect without any care for their own safety. A weapon to destroy all that stood in the way of the protection of those they cared about. One locked into an eternal moment of the worst day of their life, one full of regret that was broken in ways they had yet to realize and would take years to recover if ever. Bear, villain, evil sister or whatever may come. Sphinx wouldn't let a single thing get near the person their true self had yet to realize they loved.

Khepri nodded in understanding. That happened a lot to them too. You go into a room to get something and then you completely forget what your were there for, search cabinets, dishwashers and washing machines to figure out what you were trying to find until you slip, look down and realize: 'Oh right, bandages for the rusty nail I stepped on.'
"Okay, I'll start on the left. I'll tell you what I find and you tell me what you find and we can piece it together."
Walking to the right side of the room they reached underneath a sofa and began to rummage around. With ears twitching in surprise they turned their head and tilted it in question.
"You're lying? Do you know what you're looking for or will you not know what it is when you see it?"
That was an important clarification. Depending on which it was their search would have to be adjusted accordingly. Khepri wasn't sure how but they were sure that they could think of something if they squinted hard enough. Pulling their hand out from beneath the sofa they pouted and stood back up.
"I only found baking soda. Not even enough of it to make a cake." Putting the small baggie down on the salon table in between a whiskey bottle and a glass pipe Khepri moved on to the cabinet.
"Oh, we forgot to introduce ourselves. I'm K- Sphinx," they corrected themselves. Technically speaking they weren't here as a civilian but as someone helping out like a hero so they should probably use their hero name. "What's your name?"

Khepri tilted their head and let out a thoughtful hum in response to Yoko's question. "I don't know, I didn't see her long enough to be sure." They hadn't been able to take a picture either and memory was a finnicky thing so it was hard to analyze the past after the fact. It was perfectly possible that what they had seen hadn't been a spirit but something else instead like a ghost or a cosplayer.
"Us?" Khepri asked while rubbing their cheek. "The spirit has been inside of us all along?!" They can pass through walls because they were inside of them? That made sense. Khepri had heard something about your heart being with multiple people before, they'd just never followed that train of thought further. Furrowing their eyebrows they leaned down and forward to stare intently at the place where Yoko's heart would be, hoping to catch a glimpse if the fox spirit poked its head out even briefly. They weren't surprised that it would choose to live there. Yoko was soft and warm. Khepri too liked being in places that were soft, warm, comfy and cozy.
"I'm jealous." The catbug said before raising their head again when Yoko squeezed their hand a bit harder in return. "Okay, let's assume that." That sounded much more wholesome than the alternative. Well, sometimes being spirited away wasn't bad, Khepri had heard that the fae threw some very fun parties, but usually it ended very poorly for the victims. They weren't going to risk Yoko's safety like that. If they wanted to attend a fae party they could always come back some other time.
Hmm, how far they wanted to go? Well, however far it took to find the fox spirit they supposed. It was hard to put a measurement on it since they didn't know the distance. Maybe they should explain in different ways then. A journey had a beginning and an ending so the furthest point would be them finding the fox spirit here and that was what Khepri wanted.
"All the way." They confidently replied with a nod and a bright smile. Khepri had the distinct feeling that when they were together they could do anything. Looking at the facts so far it checked out. They had yet to fail at even a single thing they'd tried. Hmm, maybe it was Yoko that always succeeded though regardless of who they cooperated with. Khepri by themself had failed plenty of times. They might even accidentally be putting more pressure on Yoko. That was a thought they very much didn't like. So much so that the tingling in their belly turned into a very uncomfortable rumbling instead. Tilting their head they made sure to check how Yoko felt about it. "Are you okay with going there with me?"
Not much later Khepri too froze in place as they looked behind their companion. "Uh... Yoko..." They spoke up while pointing over her shoulder. "There's Bs behind you." Two of them. Large enough that their shoulders came up as high as Yoko's head and with a maw full of teeth. The only thing these Bears missed that normal ones had were the ears. Khepri wasn't sure whether that was better or worse. "Is there something behind me too?" Khepri gulped.

The mission was simple. There were many captives awaiting rescue and only so many Pro Heroes to go around. With the size of the facility and how difficult it was to navigate that made getting the right person to be in the right place to make all the difference that much more difficult.
That was why when the rough location of a group of captives was discovered several impromptu groups of students and sidekicks had been formed with a simple goal. Either find them or get as close to them as possible and then plant and active the portable teleporter they were carrying so a Pro could take over.
That was how Mafdet Khepri and Katahara Yunagi had found themselves in the cramped tunnels of Takamagahara South, the most chaotic of the four quadrants. Right beyond the acid lake where the entrance to South had been secured a veritable maze of them had been found, some full of stale air and others so windy it was like walking through a storm. The materials they were made of and the sizes they had were different too. That was why this team only had two people. The tunnel they were currently in barely had enough room for a trio to stand shoulder to shoulder, any more would simply get in each other's way.
Khepri suddenly came to a stop, one hand raised to gesture for Yunagi to stop as they kept their ears peeled. Yup, that was definitely a sound. Not a fun one either.
"Something's coming."
Softly lowering the teleporter they were carrying Khepri readied themself into a combat stance to handle whatever came their way. The threat was soon revealed. Several giant, lanky Nomu with massively long arms crawling their way. Or at least so Khepri assumed, for of the six meters until the next bend a solid four were taken up by the creatures' forearms. If they didn't manage to deal with them as they came they might just be in big trouble.

"No, I've seen other spirits though," Khepri responded confidently albeit maybe a bit too quick. They actually had seen a fox spirit before back when they were wandering the rooftops of Tokyo. It had almost ran right into them, long white hair reflecting the moonlight, before pointing finger guns at them and telling them that they hadn't seen her and to tell no one. There weren't many things Khepri was entirely sure of but the facts that keeping promises was important and that disobeying spirits was a bad idea were two of them. "It might be, I don't know where it is. Where's corporeal?" They asked, entirely serious.
"Yeah that's what I was thinking too. Not unless we'd been spirited away to a mirror world where people hadn't walked over the path enough to trample all of those flat." Taking a look around Khepri realized they couldn't be entirely sure that they hadn't been. The suddenly thick fog made it very hard to see whether they were still where they were before. Pulling out their phone they checked their digital map to check before putting it back away.
"No, we haven't gone as far as I was hoping."
That was something they needed to fix. While it was possible that the fox spirit would show itself here it was much more likely to do so once they got deeper into the forest. They were on the right track though. Khepri had done their research and getting lost in the woods was definitely the first step to running into a spirit. The mist was very promising too.
"Hmm, are you listening Yoko?" Khepri asked while squeezing her hand to catch her attention. She seemed distracted for some reason. "Yoko? Is there something behind me?"
