Half empty or full... "Enma?" Khepri mouthed quietly while maintaining an unblinking stare. "Are you... really Enma?" The Enma that Khepri had met before didn't seem like they'd do this on purpose. Could he be someone else than they'd thought? Khepri's hand shook slightly and the exoskeleton of their legs softened slightly as if in preparation for an empowered leap. That's when a single syllable pierced through the haze and shook Khepri out of it.
They immediately stepped aside at Ylva's instruction. That made sense. If Kikurage had gotten bruised Ylva could probably treat that by chilling it to stop the swelling. Khepri's tail swished behind them as they heard Kiku scream. That was good, they were going to be fine then. So long as they were alive they could be fixed. That was what the doctor had told Khepri that one time too. Putting their hands together apologetically they looked at their other friend.
"Ah! Sorry, Enma. I was almost about to attack you there." The innocent smile with which they said it didn't match the contents of their words at all. Giving a happy nod back at Kiku's thanks Khepri took a few steps back and to the side so they weren't obscuring the crowd's view of Farrin as he continued speaking. Making sure to listen attentively the catbug's eyes briefly glossed over at his mention of what it was like 'out there' but with a blink and then another their normal shine was back.
Their ears twitched in the other direction and they looked over when Lucille called out to them. With a happy smile and half a swing in their step Khepri walked over to her. Just in case they kept count too. They didn't want to overshoot their limits. "Can I help with something, Arbogast-sensei?" Their head tilted just a little as they asked, not enough to be sideways but enough that they could consider the ups and downs instead of just seeing left and right out of the corners of their eyes.
Impressive? Khepri supposed heroes were impressive and they were supposed to help people so it made sense that trying to help was impressive. They hadn't thought of that before. "I didn't get punched in the chest and go down." Khepri responded with a thumbs-up and a smile. That probably felt bad. Khepri's chest only hurt a little and that wasn't from an injury, that just happened from time to time. They were doing just fine right now.
Like Farrin said they should probably make sure they were ready to have that not happen when they were outside of UAU either. They'd only had a single lesson about the Emerald Fist so far and that probably wasn't enough to learn it. If it was then schools would just have new students every class instead of the same ones for a few years. "I need to go learn a second time, Teacher. Did you want me to do anything before I go back?"
If not they'd turn around and practice some more. Lucille might notice as they did that their tail was a bit stiff instead of swaying behind them and that their ears seemed a bit twitchy but outside of that Khepri looked a-okay. Looking from the crowd to the group that was standing near the infirmary staff and then to the person that was standing near Lucille before Khepri wondered who they could spar with. They all seemed very different so whoever it was Khepri was sure they'd be able to learn a lot about how to use the fighting style. Raising their hand over their head they looked to Farrin.
"O'rourke-sensei! Who should I spar with?"

Khepri saw Kikurage off with a happy wave when she went over to Farrin. Everyone was different and the more different people sparred the more Khepri would get to see how things worked. It was great! Just like people were different interpretations were too. Attentively listening to Farrin's explanation Khepri wondered whether they'd be drawing the same conclusions from it as the others here did. They'd get to see soon.
With their eyes wide open and their blinking kept to a minimum that was exactly what they did, their gaze focused completely on Kikurage and Enma. The catbug was so engrossed in the scene that they didn't notice Rahul at all, only the result of his actions like the ripple of a rock thrown into a pond. Except it was more of a ripple in the crowd following the impact of Enma's punch, a fair few of them seeming to cringe at the same time following the sound.
The distance between Khepri and fight seemed to grow and the people around them appeared more and more out of focus as they tunnel-visioned on what just happened. Khepri stood stock still in place. Everything was alright, they didn't need to move, this was just a spar after all. Then Kikurage toppled over and Khepri was pushing through the crowd before they knew it. The moment they were clear the exoskeleton in their legs swelled as they kicked off just enough to come to a stop in a kneel right next to Kikurage. Their guard was up, shoulders squared as one arm protectively hovered over the person they'd volunteered while their eyes focused wholly on Enma's movements. In truth there was probably no need at all for them to intervene, not with their comparative speed compared to the other people present, but Khepri had zoned out what was going on around them in favor of acting.
"Do you want to go to the infirmary?" Khepri asked Kiku with a brief absence of the usual joviality their tone carried, a shift they themself hadn't noticed. All the while their eyes didn't leave Enma's posture. Their next move would depend on the responses they'd get with their eyes and ears alike, whether from Farrin, one of the duelists or Lucille.

Half empty or full... "O-okay." That was good. Secrets were important for riddles and Khepri liked those. If no one kept secrets then riddles wouldn't exist anymore so it was good that this would stay a secret or there would be no Khepri riddles anymore. Their hand faintly trembled beneath Sadako's. That wouldn't be good. How could they figure anything out if the riddles were gone?
"Of course I do. That's normal, right?" Caring about people was what they were meant to do wasn't it? They were here to study to be heroes after all, that was what they should do, right? "She suddenly got so cold and then she fell and shook and- and- what if she stopped shaking? What if she stopped moving?"
A shaky breath that was half inhale and half sob followed while they listened to the rest of Sadako's words.
"No. It wasn't me who saw that." Khepri shook their head. "They had ten fingers and could see behind them and remember everything and they kept walking and they knew everything for four days and their mind didn't stop it just kept thinking and thinking and thinking an-" They choked up and took a stuttered breath that wasn't anything remotely similar to the one Sadako took before they continued. "An- and they carried the body out of there after she got shot in the head it wasn't me it was them but why was the blood on my clothes her body swayed so much it was so heavy when that person carried it but that wasn't me so why was the blood on-"
They were fully shaking now, their eyes seeing something that wasn't there as they rambled on and on until something would snap them out of it.

Half empty or full... Anxiety led one to think about a large amount of possible situations and freedom was the ability to choose. Khepri’s mind whirled as they considered Farrin’s words. That made so much sense! The right time wasn’t made just by being faster, it was made through preparing for things in advance and then making the right choice when it happened. The question then was how to prepare. Life was a veritable kaleidoscope of options and there was no way Khepri could account for every single possibilty so how could they-
His next reply answered that question too. Training. Change came from within after all. If they couldn't prepare for every single possible thing that could go wrong they had to increase the breadth of their own skillset to have more options to choose from. Even a single addition could have a massive impact. Decks of cards could reach infinite possibilities with just fifty two components, an incredibly small amount compared to infinity itself. The next question then was how to improve their-
"Can you teach me?"
The chance of Farrin helping them for no reason was small but Khepri already had a no and they could only get a yes through asking. They'd found so many answers and even more questions through just a little bit of conversation, who knew what else they could learn. Even if he didn't have the time or interest to teach them maybe he could point them towards someone who did. It was a win-win situation if you squinted and Khepri had the needed eyelids to do that. They'd done some boxing when they packed for the trip to Egypt but Khepri didn't think that was what Farrin had meant. They didn't know what the Emerald Fist was but something about it resonated with them. In Ancient Egypt emeralds were seen as symbols of eternal life. It was even rumoured that the god of wisdom Thoth had written all the secrets of the universe on an emerald tablet.
The Emerald Fist sounded like exactly what they needed. That was what their intuition told them. Khepri followed her previous question up with one more word, slightly quieter and much softer than the rest.
"Please?"

Half empty or full... It took a few minutes but they eventually made it back with a mop, a full bucket and a decanter of water. The first two had been left around the corner where they'd done some cleaning but the third they'd carried with them all the way to Wendy and Enma without spilling more than a third of it.
"I'm back! Does anyone have something to divide this water into? I asked a guy that had glasses but he said no and that they were for seeing not drinking out of."
Maybe it was just them but the mood seemed to be different when they returned compared to when they'd originally arrived. Did something happen? Nah, they were probably just relaxing after swinging the bat and chasing the ball. It made sense that they were taking a break since that got harder and harder to do the more the sun set and Khepri couldn't even see the bottom half anymore. Well, they weren't looking at it right now but that was beside the point. Even if they were looking at it they might not see the bottom half.
"Are we still practicing?" Pushing limits was how you got better so if they wanted to stay and practice more Khepri would be happy to join them. "Or would you and you like to get something to eat? I've got some room for food whenever we're done!"
Either way Khepri was looking forward to it, their tail swaying behind them and the corners of their mouth curved up into a smile.

Half empty or full... "I think they do it with their vocal cords and the air from their lungs." So the catbug assumed at least. They didn't know a lot of Americans and they'd never seen Lone Wolf's quirk in action so for all they knew he simply had a quirk that made him talk like other people. They knew one member of faculty had the opposite so while it still wasn't likely they couldn't rule it out. They'd need to ask him how he breathed when they got back.
"Probably for all those objects to float over. What do you think?" Khepri responded and asked back while looking at the plinths. It seemed unlikely that they'd all accidentally phased through the glass and come to a stop right on top of them. They didn't know what a Bilrost or a Helios was but shards of iron and vials of blood didn't usually do that. Coins did flip but they usually fell while doing so, the one she spotted over there was just hanging in place while spinning wildly. Was that a perpetual motion engine? Khepri was just about to stare until it stopped spinning to make sure when the door flew open. Not literally this time. They'd seen that happen before. Well, they'd also seen doors open normally before so they had seen this version too. Wait, what were they thinking about?
"Your name is Small? Don't worry we have good eyes, where is it written?"
They peered past him into the 'closed set' as they spoke, checking if they could see a name tag anywhere from here. There were a lot of name plaques but they seemed to be in front of exhibits so unless he'd stepped out of one of them his name probably wasn't on any of those.
"What play is this?" Khepri had heard about an old video called Night at a Museum or something along those lines but it was still day so it couldn't be that one. Oh! Maybe this was a sequel. Turning to face Small the catbug was ready to hear their response.

"About me?" Khepri tilted their head. They had lots and lots to say about themself but usually people lost track before they were even a fortieth through the list so they'd stopped saying the entire list in one go. Khepri wondered whether there was something in specific that Counselor Gotoh wanted to talk about or whether they should just begin at the start.
"Hmm, Yoko did?" That was... bad? For some reason Khepri didn't want Yoko to be worried about them. Well, they didn't want anyone to be worried about them. Their ears drooped a little. Not enough that Khepri themself noticed but a dead giveaway that they didn't like the thought of that at all. Yoko didn't seem like someone that would speak to a teacher for no reason. If she'd complained about them then they were doing something really, really wrong. There was a tingling sensation in the back of Khepri's throat, one that seemed to climb up until they swallowed. They should go apologize after this.
"It isn't?" Khepri asked almost to themself while tilting their head. Their brow furrowed in thought. It didn't seem all too bad. Their grades were still up whenever they remembered to come to class. Which was most days. Hebi wasn't a truant and Khepri themself sleepwalked. Even without being awake they tended to get from their dorm to the classroom because of that. Maybe that wasn't what Sadako meant.
Extreme wasn't good but too little wasn't good too? Did that mean a middle was needed? But to find a middle one had to know where the edges of the line were, otherwise it was impossible to figure out what the middle was. For some reason Khepri didn't like the idea of looking for them. That was weird. They knew themself, they loved riddles and finding things like that. So why was it that-
''Mafdet-san, can you tell me how long you have felt like this? Did something happen that made you feel so little?''
Oh.
"No. That wasn't me. It wasn't. I- I didn't. I don't rememb- W- what?" They looked back up from their hands to see a hazy figure in front of them. Their hair was black. That- that was Counselor Gotoh. Khepri's breath cut off halfway and picked back up a half second later with a sharper inhale.
"I- No. There were ten fingers. That wasn't me. I don't know who saw all that."

Half empty or full... They knew they could count on Michael! Khepri wasn't sure what the plan was but he'd managed to grab their leg and those were crucial in sticking a landing so they had full faith in him. "Okay!" The catbug responded while spreading their arms wide and curling the tips of their fingers. That way the pokey bits of their nails had the full support of their arms behind it instead of possibly flicking backwards when hitting something. Khepri had that happen once while they were leaning out of the side of a car and waving. That utility pole had been much, much tougher than their nail.
They could recall it clearly, the image plastered on their closed eyelids while their sight was gone. That was okay though. Khepri wasn't sure but they had the feeling that this wasn't that unpleasant of an image to be displayed there. It'd only bent back a little after all before snapping back in place, the only evidence of the impact being a neat line on the back of their nail and a bit of a red discoloration beneath it. It'd been worth it to feel the wind in their hair, that had felt... Well, sort of like what they were feeling now, just from one direction instead of with the circley feeling added to it.
Were they spinning?
Well, whatever they were doing the two of them seemed to be doing it right. Taking in a deep breath Khepri's lips curled into a smile. This was almost like being on an amusement park ride except it counted as schoolwork. Their six year old self would be so proud of what they were doing right now.
“They're my nails I can't- Never mind. Got it!” Their fingers curled until their hands formed two fists. That worked. It'd just taken them a bit longer to figure out than it'd taken their new friend but Khepri didn't plan to disappoint. Holding their hands shut as tightly as possible they let themself be drawn into the hug and held their breath. Just to be sure they wouldn't accidentally poke or chafe him Khepri softened the parts of their exoskeleton making contact a little bit as well. Not enough that they'd be left defenseless but enough to prevent discomfort. Hopefully.
Not that discomfort was their biggest concern of course as they plummeted out of the sky. Oh. Should they help do something about that? By the time they'd finished that thought they'd landed, their face squishing into their rubbery cushion before bumping back up like they were getting out of the water in a swimming pool.
“Can I open my eyes now?” Khepri asked before eventually blinking and looking around. Tactile sensations had told them that a lot of balloons had been popped. With a slight tilt of their head they looked back at Michael.
“Do you think they’ll split the points 50/50?”

Half empty or full... "Pffffffff," they exhaled before letting out a half cough, their rapid head turn having caused them to accidentally let go of the air they were holding. A pop resounded when they hit another balloon putting their score up to five. "Yes, Michael-san?" Looking at their new friend their eyes widened. They'd seen that before! Old movies, some about soldiers and others about prisoners, that Khepri had watched years ago had similar poses in them used by people to help each other get over walls. They fully understood what Michael meant. This was what they needed to do to get past their limits, to break through those walls. They had to go over their limit just as literally as Khepri had thought earlier. This time they'd be able to jump high enough to reach their goal and then further beyond.
Plus Ultra!
Khepri nodded in reply, their pupils dilating as they did. The hunt was on. Charging straight at Michael's welcoming arms they jumped forward at the last second, softening the exoskeleton in their other leg and bulging the muscles within to kick off as hard as they could. Combined with Michael's help they shot into the air like a rocket, air whizzing past them as they impacted the mass of balloons with a series of pops. There was no way they could keep track of their score like this. Khepri hoped someone else did, otherwise all of these balloons would have been popped for nothing. Their arms lashed left and right, more pops resounding whenever their nails made contact with any of them until finally gravity started to reassert itself.
Turning around so they'd be facing downwards they spread their arms wide and angled their legs so they could both land on their feet and form a wider bowl. Well, upside down bowl. For as they fell they made sure as many balloons as possible came with them, right on a collision course with their new friend.
"Michael! Catch!"
Whether they were talking about the balloons coming down with them or themself wasn't clear nor did it matter. The result would be the same.

Half empty or full... Peering out from between two students Khepri carefully observed the match from their place within the crowd. Seeing others fight each other without stakes was always an exciting experience. Khepri's heart thudded just a bit louder beneath their exoskeleton chest, their breath held while blows were being thrown and released only once the results showed themselves. Offering a friendly nod to the person that just joined them their attention didn't stay on Kikurage for long, the rest of the spar and the following commotion both drawing their gaze. Only when Farrin asked for another volunteer did the catbug turn back to her neighbor.
"Oh, did you want to go?" Khepri asked Kikurage maybe a bit too loudly, their ears still buzzing slightly from the excitement of the fight they'd just witnessed. Their happy smile was entirely lacking of judgement making it abjectly clear that it was an honest question. After all, why would she have joined them if not to participate? Well, Khepri could think of a dozen reasons but they hadn't come to mind when they asked the question. That was fine though. If she didn't want to go Khepri could always volunteer themself. It would make watching the fight a bit harder since they'd be participating but learning could be done in many ways. Khepri could barely wait. Either way would be interesting!

Half empty or full... Catching Jingjing before she goes down by grabbing her arm the catbug tried to help stabilize her once more. 'Oops, sorry,' Khepri said but only in their head, forgetting to say it out loud since their hands were busy. That was okay. What their hands were doing was more important right now. They didn't want the person they just met to fall after all. Khepri blinked in surprise when said person suddenly turned more fluffy before their gaze went up to her horns. "You have something in your hair.”
Attentively listening to Jingjing’s reply Khepri tilted their head. "Me neither. Maybe it was in the forest." That was pretty far from here so Khepri couldn’t check whether anyone was there. Maybe they could take a trip later to find out if the person in front of them was still interested by then. Most people didn’t seem to care as much about finding answers as Khepri themself did.
“There’s a lot of big ideas. Oh, is that why you turned into a sheep? Sleeping is sort of like being half dead but not really.” They nodded to themself. That was another riddle solved.
“Are you looking for something? I can help you find it! I’m good at finding things.” Sometimes what Khepri found was even the thing they were looking for.

Half empty or full... Khepri was uncharacteristically still as they listened to Farrin's reply, their subconscious honing in entirely on his words to the point all else fell away. There was no fidgeting, no straying attention, not even a stray train of thought. Just focus on the answer to the question that had been bothering them for months now straight from the man that controlled the flow of time itself.
He… he didn't know? But, but if he didn't then…
"...what if there is no right time." It wasn't phrased like a question. The words lacked the curiosity of Khepri's usual inquiries. No, this one had the sound of a realization. The vocalisation of a thought that had been buzzing in their head like the first part of the alphabet for quite a while now, getting louder and louder until it drowned out all thought at times. "How do I make one?" This one was a question. The buzzing let up again as they asked, their focus entirely on Farrin's answer. Then they blinked twice and their normal demeanor was back.
"What were you doing? Am I interrupting?"
...Is all perspective
