Khepri tilted their head and let out a thoughtful hum in response to Yoko's question. "I don't know, I didn't see her long enough to be sure." They hadn't been able to take a picture either and memory was a finnicky thing so it was hard to analyze the past after the fact. It was perfectly possible that what they had seen hadn't been a spirit but something else instead like a ghost or a cosplayer.
"Us?" Khepri asked while rubbing their cheek. "The spirit has been inside of us all along?!" They can pass through walls because they were inside of them? That made sense. Khepri had heard something about your heart being with multiple people before, they'd just never followed that train of thought further. Furrowing their eyebrows they leaned down and forward to stare intently at the place where Yoko's heart would be, hoping to catch a glimpse if the fox spirit poked its head out even briefly. They weren't surprised that it would choose to live there. Yoko was soft and warm. Khepri too liked being in places that were soft, warm, comfy and cozy.
"I'm jealous." The catbug said before raising their head again when Yoko squeezed their hand a bit harder in return. "Okay, let's assume that." That sounded much more wholesome than the alternative. Well, sometimes being spirited away wasn't bad, Khepri had heard that the fae threw some very fun parties, but usually it ended very poorly for the victims. They weren't going to risk Yoko's safety like that. If they wanted to attend a fae party they could always come back some other time.
Hmm, how far they wanted to go? Well, however far it took to find the fox spirit they supposed. It was hard to put a measurement on it since they didn't know the distance. Maybe they should explain in different ways then. A journey had a beginning and an ending so the furthest point would be them finding the fox spirit here and that was what Khepri wanted.
"All the way." They confidently replied with a nod and a bright smile. Khepri had the distinct feeling that when they were together they could do anything. Looking at the facts so far it checked out. They had yet to fail at even a single thing they'd tried. Hmm, maybe it was Yoko that always succeeded though regardless of who they cooperated with. Khepri by themself had failed plenty of times. They might even accidentally be putting more pressure on Yoko. That was a thought they very much didn't like. So much so that the tingling in their belly turned into a very uncomfortable rumbling instead. Tilting their head they made sure to check how Yoko felt about it. "Are you okay with going there with me?"
Not much later Khepri too froze in place as they looked behind their companion. "Uh... Yoko..." They spoke up while pointing over her shoulder. "There's Bs behind you." Two of them. Large enough that their shoulders came up as high as Yoko's head and with a maw full of teeth. The only thing these Bears missed that normal ones had were the ears. Khepri wasn't sure whether that was better or worse. "Is there something behind me too?" Khepri gulped.
Uh oh. |

The mission was simple. There were many captives awaiting rescue and only so many Pro Heroes to go around. With the size of the facility and how difficult it was to navigate that made getting the right person to be in the right place to make all the difference that much more difficult.
That was why when the rough location of a group of captives was discovered several impromptu groups of students and sidekicks had been formed with a simple goal. Either find them or get as close to them as possible and then plant and active the portable teleporter they were carrying so a Pro could take over.
That was how Mafdet Khepri and Katahara Yunagi had found themselves in the cramped tunnels of Takamagahara South, the most chaotic of the four quadrants. Right beyond the acid lake where the entrance to South had been secured a veritable maze of them had been found, some full of stale air and others so windy it was like walking through a storm. The materials they were made of and the sizes they had were different too. That was why this team only had two people. The tunnel they were currently in barely had enough room for a trio to stand shoulder to shoulder, any more would simply get in each other's way.
Khepri suddenly came to a stop, one hand raised to gesture for Yunagi to stop as they kept their ears peeled. Yup, that was definitely a sound. Not a fun one either.
"Something's coming."
Softly lowering the teleporter they were carrying Khepri readied themself into a combat stance to handle whatever came their way. The threat was soon revealed. Several giant, lanky Nomu with massively long arms crawling their way. Or at least so Khepri assumed, for of the six meters until the next bend a solid four were taken up by the creatures' forearms. If they didn't manage to deal with them as they came they might just be in big trouble.

"No, I've seen other spirits though," Khepri responded confidently albeit maybe a bit too quick. They actually had seen a fox spirit before back when they were wandering the rooftops of Tokyo. It had almost ran right into them, long white hair reflecting the moonlight, before pointing finger guns at them and telling them that they hadn't seen her and to tell no one. There weren't many things Khepri was entirely sure of but the facts that keeping promises was important and that disobeying spirits was a bad idea were two of them. "It might be, I don't know where it is. Where's corporeal?" They asked, entirely serious.
"Yeah that's what I was thinking too. Not unless we'd been spirited away to a mirror world where people hadn't walked over the path enough to trample all of those flat." Taking a look around Khepri realized they couldn't be entirely sure that they hadn't been. The suddenly thick fog made it very hard to see whether they were still where they were before. Pulling out their phone they checked their digital map to check before putting it back away.
"No, we haven't gone as far as I was hoping."
That was something they needed to fix. While it was possible that the fox spirit would show itself here it was much more likely to do so once they got deeper into the forest. They were on the right track though. Khepri had done their research and getting lost in the woods was definitely the first step to running into a spirit. The mist was very promising too.
"Hmm, are you listening Yoko?" Khepri asked while squeezing her hand to catch her attention. She seemed distracted for some reason. "Yoko? Is there something behind me?"

That made sense to Khepri. If everything was suddenly going in different directions than you expected you were bound to make mistakes. The catbug's gaze went cross-eyed for a second before they blinked twice and paid full attention once more. They wondered what a southpaw was. Their catlike features did make it so that their hands could be said to be paws in some way but what was south about them? They'd need to look it up later.
As they listened to Farrin's instructions Khepri followed along with several more jabs. A few they made with just their index and middle finger pointed forward like the tip of a spear, some others they used all four of their non-thumb fingers for and with the last one they tilted their hand, balled the four fingers into a fist and used only their thumb to strike. Hmm, well that last one definitely wouldn't work. The other ones remained to be seen. "Yeah, I don't want to accidentally poke a hole in someone." With how innocently they said it and their specific phrasing it was easy to see how the catbug was simply responding to Farrin's warning about being careful in training. The extra emphasis on the word accidentally was entirely in their own mind.
Khepri watched the batting motions and the almost wiggly sway like a cat eyeing a bird, their eyes honing in on every motion and flicking between every moving part. They missed more than they saw, including the whole for the parts, but it gave them some ideas. The best way to avoid damage was to make your opponent hit somewhere else or to make sure you avoided where their hit would end up. What if they did the same for their own hits? If they hit too hard with the knuckles of their semi-fist their nails might pierce the palm of their hand so what if they made sure those weren't where the hit was?
Tilting their hand backwards they thought about what a punch was. It was the end of a set of bones hitting the enemy to make use of the hard bits to maximize damage. They had hard bits like that where their arm ended and their fist began too.
The first jab they made at Farrin was the standard one they'd done before but for the second they struck with the heel of their palm. It sacrificed a hand's length worth of range but in exchange they felt like they'd be able to hit much harder. It was difficult to put your full force into a strike after all if it risked stabbing yourself four times with every hit. With their fingers curled up they might even be able to follow jabs with the heel of their palm up with a quirk sideways motion to cut whatever they'd jabbed instead.
The more they jabbed and had their jabs deflected the more Khepri began to fall into a routine that felt almost comfortable. Well, that was a lie. They fell into a routine that they imagined could eventually become comfortable when the untrained motions didn't hurt so much. Khepri wasn't very used to trying to hit hard without making full use of their quirk and they were feeling it now. Even their rhythm was suffering for it, they usually never moved in any pattern other than their own and they'd have taken a fair few painful hits by now if Farrin had followed through with his jabs. At best they'd managed to deflect one in three.
"No, they grow by themselves," Khepri answered in between panting breaths. Breaths that came a little irregular since they were heaving so much that the catbug needed to soften the exoskeleton on her torso to fully fill their lungs with air. Instinct automatically hardened it again when a jab drew near oft forcing the air out of their lungs. Another thing they'd need to learn to account for. Said instinct would probably shift once they were used to being able to use their arms to protect their torso with this form but that was doing them little good right now.
With their focus tunnel visioning entirely on Farrin and the task at hand they didn't even notice the dark spots creeping in at the edge of their vision. Their tail shifted behind them as they swayed a little too much to one side. Khepri paid it no mind. With their balance regained they simply made another jab.

"I think someone wrote a book about that a while back." Khepri responded while inspecting the exhibit their adventuring buddy was looking at. Maybe a more modern version of it? Then again color descriptions in The Odyssey were different than they are now so maybe clothing descriptions were too.
Stepping a bit further Khepri reached what seemed to be either a managerial office or the office of the security guard. Either way it looked like it hadn't been entered for a while. The door leading to it was full of dents where people had clearly attempted to push and hit it with their full force to get in. Appearance-wise the doorway had a simple handle and lock, looking like a solid steel slab with no clear alternate methods of opening it. Khepri loved riddles like this. From what they could see there were only two hints. One was a large plaque set over the door engraved with a fanciful script that said 'Overthinking'. The second was a blue rectangle with bold white letters on the middle of the door that read 'PULL'. Tapping their chin with a finger Khepri carefully considered the clues. They should probably take a look in there before whatever was stomping closer arrived and took up their attention.
"Jouma, I didn't bring my hat, how do you think I should open this door?"

Half empty or full... "Okay!" Khepri responded with a bright smile. Phone calls could have all kind of stuff in them and it was always important to check. They hoped it wasn't anything serious. Taking a brief glance around they spotted the training bots and went over to one of them instead. So far Khepri had an infinite amount of experience more fighting people than they had fighting inanimate constructs. Well, with their newly learned fighting style they meant. They had fought inanimate constructs before learning it.
That mannequin had been a very realistic looking one and very much appeared to be up to no good.
They hadn't tried to practice against any artificial combatants since given how easily they'd won the first time but with their new style it was definitely worth seeing whether it worked the same. Squaring up to the training bot they got in the right stance and zoned out everything but themself and their opponent. It was time to train. By the time Khepri would finally snap out to it the sun had already gone down. Time was funny like that.

Half empty or full... Khepri had taken a left that wasn't right and suddenly ended up in a medieval environment instead of the sterile lab they'd gotten lost in before. Looking over their shoulder they couldn't see the way they'd come from anymore either. Well, as far as things went since they'd arrived in Takamagahara this wasn't the weirdest, the glowing unicorn that smelled neon pink and sounded like cucumber still held that spot.
At least they weren't alone, that was always a good thing. Except for that time where they'd been followed and then attacked by a Nomu whose quirk let it stay directly behind them no matter which way they turned. But they digressed. Not being alone meant tasks could be divided between people and by order of priority. Fire tended to be one of those and given that it seemed to be approaching the group of people in armor standing near to a rather terrifying Nomu Khepri quite literally leapt into action to save them so they could focus on that fight.
With their claws bared they cut and tore through the carpet, pulling with their full force to shred fabric and doing their best to isolate the burning parts of it before the fire could spread. As they did Khepri cast a glance back at the fight. Huh, why weren't they fighting each other?
---
TL;DR: -Khepri enters through a teleporter -Immediately mistakes the GasMasks as a costume coordinated group fighting the Nomu -Leaps into action and uses their nails to cut through the carpet and try to isolate the burning parts of it

Half empty or full... Sometimes to feel better you had to find a way to lift your spirits. It'd taken a while but Khepri had finally gotten a lead on a spirit to try and lift. They weren't quite sure yet how it'd help but they trusted Gotoh-sensei's judgement so here they were.
"The fog is getting thick let's hold hands so we don't lose each other."
Gotoh-sensei had also said that they didn't need to do that alone so they brought someone along and for some reason the first person that came to mind was Yoko. It was probably because she was good at seeing things Khepri themself didn't notice. They couldn't think of why else she'd come to mind first. Their head tilted slightly at that thought. For some reason they felt like there was more to it but they couldn't quite place it. Oh well, maybe the fox spirit knew. Spirits knew all kinds of interesting things. This one time back in Egypt they'd asked a spirit how to stop crime and the spirit had gone right through a wall. The time after that they'd tried his advice out and putting the criminal through a wall really did help stop crime.
Taking a few more steps forward Khepri nearly fell over a root, only their catlike reflexes and the fact that the root was thin enough to snap almost instantly saving them from an embarrassing fall. When they looked down they found the reason for the root. They were no longer on the path. Apparently the mist had made them stray off the path, their walking must have gradually shifted until it was-
"-no longer straight. Yoko I think we stopped going straight. Look, the path is gone."

With their mind abuzz Khepri nodded along. It was like a toolbox, or like attack patterns in a game. The more you had and the more damaging they were the more the opponent had to account for. Against an enemy with only three or four different attacks it was possible to adapt just by loading a save file a few times but if they had multiple movesets that partially adapted to the moves you made it was much, much harder. Especially when you didn't have enough fingers to properly use the controller but Khepri doubted that was part of the metaphor.
"Okay, thank you!"
When Farrin moved to correct their posture the catbug smoothly adjusted, their pose no longer falling back into the previous posture now that their attention was split 50/50 between listening to his words and correcting her form. The only part that was still quite different from the demonstration was their hands. With the length and sharpness of their nails they couldn't form a fist without them piercing their palm. Instead the catbug did their best to align their foreknuckles into a rough mimicry of a fist.
"Oh!" Khepri exclaimed while watching Farrin throw punches. "My dominant side is my left!" Without having to be prompted they switched their entire stance to suit a southpaw.
For some reason it makes them feel nauseous and gave them the distinct feeling that something was going to go badly wrong but mirroring the correct movements came surprisingly easy to Khepri. As if translating what they saw to the completely opposite motions was far easier than matching them exactly. They didn't know why that was but thinking about it made the hairs on the back of their neck raise so they stopped doing that.
Following Farrin's example they tossed a few jabs with their right hand before leaning in fully when they struck with their left. Well, not fully enough to hit Farrin but fully enough to go through a target were there one in the space between them. Their brow furrowed a little. It was far more difficult to put force behind their strikes without active use of their quirk than they'd imagined. Combined with the newly learned stance still feeling awkward their attacks were sloppy and more likely to hurt themself than their opponent if they hit.
They threw one more set of jabs and a finishing strike, this time accounting for the awkwardness they'd felt before. That looked much better. It still didn't have quite enough force behind it but it sure looked that way. Khepri was going to need a lot more practice before they could functionally employ it in combat.
"The left was for- Oh, my right I guess. The forward hand was for parrying right? How do I do that?" They asked with a slight tilt of their head. That seemed really important. When they'd struck that second time earlier they'd imagined fighting themself and bile had almost risen in their throat at how easily they'd have hit themself.
Should it help the demonstration they'd throw a few jabs and/or if needed a strike with their left hand but either way they'd attentively pay attention to the next part of Farrin's explanation.

Khepri rolled off Michael the moment he deflated and came to a stop laying on their back too. The balloon shreds raining down on them was almost like a kind of snow. The kind from an old computer game that used flat planes in relation to the player's line of sight instead of modelling the textures of the snowflakes in full. Just like that, except they forgot to load the right PNG in and it just looked like brown-ish flakes fluttering through the air.
"I think there's a stand that sells tea, coffee and soda near here," Khepri stated confidently. It was like René Descartes had once said. They thought, therefore it was there. Their memories told them as much too albeit they were a bit tricky recently and occasionally slipped in things from their dreams making it hard to distinguish what they'd actually seen and what they'd imagined.
With their legs remaining flat on the ground Khepri used their tail to push their upper body upright.
"You know how oil floats on water, right? Do you think if I cover myself in oil and jump in the rain I could fly?"

"No, I think we're only allowed to have one autograph," Khepri responded to Jouma's question. Airport security had gotten really mad at them when they switched between several so the catbug was fairly certain you weren't supposed to have more.
"Wait there's guards over the- No nevermind those are statues."
It would be silly on second thought that the guards were wearing late 14th century plate armor. Almost no one wore that anymore these days unless it came from their quirk or teleporting rings. Stepping past the man with the unknown name that had been written on a namecard here somewhere Khepri took in the scene. There were so many exhibits, seemingly without any rhyme or reason as to their theme. Not even their size or shape was consistent!
The knightly exhibit they were looking at right now was the size of two billiard tables aligned side to side and resembled an alcove in a dark and grimy medieval castle. Two sullen statues of knights in not exactly shining armor stood as straight as they stood still, each of them holding onto the pommel of a sword that had its tip resting on the ground. The exhibit's stone walls itself were a dark gray covered in cobwebs and with scratch marks all over them. It was a stark difference to the painting that hung across half the length and the full breadth of its far wall, a masterpiece that displayed a fantastical medieval scene of castles, knights, princesses and dragons.
Yet another of the exhibits had a large snowglobe on a rustic table, one that seemed to have the snow constantly cast around without having to be turned over, as if the insides were caught in a perpetual storm. The contents seemed to be a viking house, peaceful and tranquil with a hearth fire burning and smoke coming out of a small chimney. Only when the storm kicked up too much snow did more macabre scenes reveal themselves for brief moments before being covered up once more.
A bit further still they spotted a large horizontal pane of glass. What was most important however was what laid beneath it. Water. Well, that wasn't the important part either but what was within that water was. Mutated sealife just like the ones that had attacked the coast months ago.
They were on the verge of something big here. Khepri's eyes widened in realization. "Nifty is short for Magnificent." That changed so much.
"Hey what's that?" Khepri asked Jouma while looking at him and pointing at a completely different exhibit.

Khepri smiled back happily at Enma's response. They'd been right after all, it really was him. He was just as nice as they remembered. Shame about the accident.
Waving goodbye to Lucille as well a bit later the catbug made their way back to the class.
"Understood, O'rourke-sensei," Khepri replied with a salute before turning to the volunteer and waiting until they were done talking to Lucille to approach. Hearing Kikurage call their name from a bit further away Khepri blinked twice and turned to face her. That worked out just fine.
Looking down at the end of their arms Khepri confirmed that they had two hands. They could spar with both Rahul and Kikurage. After all, the catbug had one entire lesson of experience and those two had zero so that was an infinite amount of experience more. That was how multiplication worked. Even by the end of this lesson Khepri would still have as much experience as both of them put together. It was only starting from the class after this one that they'd be outmatched in a two versus one.
Another double blink followed at the redhead's introduction. Her name was Khepri as well? They'd thought her name was Masao! Nodding to themself they made sure to remember that for the next time they needed to commission more spoons. Wait, hold on, wasn't this person Yoko's senpai that had been talking to them while Masao was doing the costume contest? They hadn't been wrong then after all. Khepri couldn't help but wonder why Yoko had never told them she knew two people named Khepri, if they'd known there was another Khepri-
Their eyes briefly glossed over before they blinked twice again, touched their helmet and were back to normal. There was sparring to be done! Without further ado they got to work.
"Hi, I'm Khepri." The catbug greeted Rahul with a friendly smile on their face. "Are you alright?" Khepri asked, remembering some of the things Gottoh-sensei had taught them during their sessions. "Oh! Because you seem fragile." They made sure to kindly elaborate. People lashed out or got angry when they weren't feeling fine, they'd learned that during their therapy sessions. From their family they also knew though that some people just showed they cared that way so they made sure to ask before making assumptions. It was after all possible he only seemed that way after all.
Giving Rahul time to answer they'd wait for his reply before their ears and tail stood straight up as they remembered something they were forgetting. Well, they weren't forgetting it anymore, they'd just remembered it after all, but they had been forgetting it before.
"Oh, one second."
Walking over to Enma the catbug briefly wondered if they were about to do the same thing that Rahul and Ylva got chided for before putting that thought aside. Nah, they didn't think what they were going to do was the same. Rahul had probably gotten scolded for trying to instruct Kiku in Farrin's style mid-instruction -something Khepri themself had only caught by looking back into their memories since they'd missed it in the moment-, trying to tell Farrin what to do and then doing it before he got the chance. Ylva was likely rebuked for trying to hijack the lesson and switch partners after Farrin had said who'd be matched. Or maybe they were stopped since they were trying to help instead of leaving leaving people to fend for themselves? Nah, that'd be silly. With the self-assured confidence of someone that had just convinced themself of an absolute truth Khepri marched on.
Huh, that was a lot of thoughts one after the other without getting interrupted. Why was- Ah! Their thinking cap was on the wrong dial. Taking their vulture crown off they either handed it to Enma or put it directly on his head, whichever he'd allow.
"This helps me when thinking gets in the way of acting," Khepri explained with a bright smile before turning back around and leaving with a skip in their step and a swish of their tail.
"Sorry for the delay!" Khepri greeted Rahul again happily before settling into a stance about two arm's lengths away from him. Taking into account what they'd learned from Oberon before they put their right hand up and forward, kept their dominant left hand close to their forward facing torso and made sure to position their feet as correctly as possible. "Ready!"

Half empty or full... Khepri was learning so many things today. Fruity drinks went down really easy and alcohol didn't have a specific taste. With how different things tasted from country to country Khepri hadn't had the slightest idea that they were starting to feel a buzz until they were four drinks deep. Singing needed a lot of energy after all and the catbug was going ham, both cheering up others and taking the microphone themself. They hadn't been to any parties like this back in Egypt and they were having the time of their life. So many people all having fun, what more could they possibly want. With a smile so wide their cheeks were bound to hurt by the time the party was over Khepri took the mic and began to sing the next song, O'fortuna.
"♫ I love goat cheese. Give me cookies. They gave us margarita! ♫
♫ This octopus, let's give him boots. Send him to get a guitar. ♫
♫ Oh! Papercut! Sand paper ah!"
The further along they sang the more they butchered the lyrics, and not just because the alcohol was causing them to slur their words. Shaking along with the beat they gradually got more and more into a rhythm, not quite the one of the song that was playing but something close. Khepri danced like nobody was watching. But people were watching and it looked like the catbug was being attacked by bees. It didn't ruin their fun. Besides, they weren't gonna have memories of this tomorrow, just a killer hangover.
