Mafdet Khepri is whimsical, easily amused and quick to bore. Given their extreme dislike of boredom they can often be found chasing whatever new fun thing they found with little regard for whether they should. They're quick to make friends and rarely make enemies, just temporary targets they forget about the moment they're out of sight. The sole thing they take seriously is their hero activities where they are aiming to specialize in search and rescue missions. Whether this is because it'll allow them to chase and find people, see new sights and have fun in different places or because they actually care about people isn't certain and Khepri's reply to such a question changes based on the time of day, how much sleep they've had, the phase of the moon and the alignment of the planets.
While they're not the brightest bulb in the shed they make up for it through their creativity, often finding ways around problems they can't work their way through while thinking inside of the box. As much as they love having fun however their friends and others they holds dear always take priority for them and they're quick to come to their aid so long as they don't forget about the problem on the way there.
Due to not understanding a great many things Khepri has always been inquisitive, asking a great many questions and pestering anyone around for answers. For similar reasons they've grown both fond of riddles and extremely frustrated by them, an interest that intensified when they took up the name 'Sphinx' for their hero activities.
Chasing whims, pestering people and getting up to all manner of shenanigans takes a lot of energy however. As a result Khepri can often be found napping in all manner of weird places, most commonly nooks and crannies that are difficult to reach or that they straight up should not be in. As a result their sleep schedule is fluid at best. It is half the reason they are so fond of night walks, the other half being that the night is home to no obligations, something they greatly appreciate given the many expectations the Mafdet family tended to heap on them during the day.
They have very particular tastes in fashion and a strong opinion on what they will and won't wear, mostly because a lot of clothes tend to get caught in their joints. They hate the feeling of that happening and hate it even more when the clothes inevitably tear while they're trying to get them out, a task made all the harder by their long, sharp nails.

Mafdet Khepri is tall, has shoulder-length white hair and both feline and insectoid traits. Their feline traits manifest as a pair of beige cat ears atop their head and a tail of the same color as their hair in addition to sharper teeth and sharper nails on both their hands and feet. The insectoid traits caused parts of their (endo)skeleton to be replaced by a carapace-like exoskeleton. Specifically their arms and legs (excluding hands and feet) as well as their upper torso. Additionally due to a combination of both they only have four fingers on each hand.

Born in Egypt as part of the prestigious Mafdet family Khepri grew up in luxury. Surrounded by the cult-like following their family gathered they naturally grew up believing themself capable of doing no wrong and have suffered little consequences no matter what they did. Something that has exasperated some of their worst tendencies but overall has caused few problems thus far.
Optimistic and friendly they have noticed little of the discrimination thrown their way or the scorn with which their parents are treated. Their family relies heavily on their self-proclaimed divinely bestowed traits to increase their standing so when Khepri's mother fell for a mutation quirk user with insectoid traits it did not take long for the rest of the Mafdet family to disapprove of their union. Claiming it was an affront for the descendants of the goddess of justice and protection to mix with one that so clearly had an appearance linked to destructive locust swarms or disease carrying bugs the pair was kept away from official events and met with ridicule behind closed doors. When their daughter was born they feared the worst and named them after the scarab god Khepri, most often associated with change and rebirth, to minimize the hardship they would have to face.
While not completely successful it at least resulted in the rest of the family tolerating their existence and permitting them and their parents to stay within the almost village sized compound occupied by the Mafdet and their following. Whether this is because they truly accepted Khepri or to keep their public relations scandal-free is not something their parents are sure of nor something that Khepri themself has ever even thought of. Whatever the reason Khepri had access to the wealth of the family and their sunny personality resulted in their requests being difficult to turn down, causing them to grow up extremely spoiled, whimsical and with little appreciation for hard work, much preferring to nap the days away instead.
When they were influenced by what they saw on TV to become a hero Khepri received encouragement from everyone around them, albeit for different reasons. Their parents hoped it would improve their morals while many among the rest of the family hoped the 'four-fingered freak' would die in action and allow them to be rid of them. To the disappointment of both even when they took part in unlicensed activities under the name 'Sphinx' neither ended up happening, their character changed little albeit they became much more energetic now that they'd found their passion and they rarely came back with so much as a scratch.
Eventually however their actions became too much to ignore and the benefits the Mafdet family gained from one of their own actively dishing out justice began to be outweighed by the fact that they were doing so without any proper authority behind them. Seeing the chance to hit three birds with one stone the Mafdets sent Khepri off to the country of one of their biggest trade partners -Japan- to both gain an official license and keep them out of their sight, simultaneously also using them for diplomatic purposes and curbing the harm done by their vigilante behavior on home ground.
-The Mafdet Family:
With the advent of quirks came societal upheaval, leaving many off worse and a select few off better. Khepri's grandfather was amongst the lucky few that managed to improve their standing due to their quirk instead of succumbing to the negative consequences of it. Born in Egypt and more importantly with a quirk that bestowed him with feline features he proclaimed himself a 'child of Mafdet', the ancient goddess of justice and protection. Due to a combination of his nation's ancient myths being looked to for comfort with the advent of quirks, the fascination held by the internet and the man's own charisma he quickly built up a cult-like following in those uncertain times and eventually a rather large family by the time Khepri was born.
While not a truly major player the family has used their connections to secure lucrative jobs in both political and private fields, ensuring the Mafdet family's wealth has vastly increased over the last half a century, slowly but surely increasing their influence alongside it.

[/b]Due to parts of their biology being covered by exoskeleton instead of containing an endoskeleton Khepri's joints are vulnerable to damage. Much like a normal endoskeleton when broken Khepri's exoskeleton can regrow stronger, however, unlike an endoskeleton that can set the bones and regrow the broken part Khepri's exoskeleton requires an entirely new plate to be grown beneath the broken one, eventually causing said plate to fall off. Once said plate has fallen off the new plate will remain soft for the next few weeks as it grows to its final size, rendering Khepri [i]extremely[/i] vulnerable to attacks against the new plate until it sets fully. Additionally, active use of their quirk during this period would have little use since the plate would be too fragile to withstand the full force of their empowered movements.

Pressure lifted with a pop in Khepri's ears not unlike the one they experienced when on an airplane. A pop they somehow felt at the same height as other people despite their ears being higher on their head. The pressure wasn't the only thing that popped the moment Jouma got the door off its hinges however. Much like how it could be said that he popped the door off with a whole different meaning of the word the word pressure too felt like joining the word party and changed to act in an entirely different way. Peer pressure. For the second that the seal was broken a cheerful tune resounded from the building, one welcoming its guests in with the happiest of voices. By social contract this meant they were bound to enter and while Khepri was more than aware they could choose not to the building hadn't given them any reason to distrust it as of yet. Besides, they'd figured the earlier riddle out too so with a bit of luck Jouma would be able to hear them again. They weren't on an airplane. The pressure implied they were however. That meant that they couldn't hear each other because they were still on the ground but their voices went all the way into the air. "Keep your voice low," Khepri whispered to Jouma while trying to sneak past him and into the building. "I think we're guests now."That meant that all that was left now was to find the host. Surely one was around, right? For now all they could see was a wide, downwards sloping hall lined with a variety of plinths, each of which had an object floating atop it surrounded by glass. There was a door at the end of the corridor though so maybe the owners were behind that one. Khepri nodded to themself. There was only one way to find out.

That made sense to Khepri. Had they themself perhaps not been taking the metaphor literally enough? Were you supposed to literally go over your limits with helium and floating? They'd have to try. Hmm, they didn't have helium on them right now though. Maybe they could just find another way to go up. It was worth a try. They just had to remember Michael's advice. Push yourself to carry others but don't spread yourself thin unless you have enough air which is difficult and risky. That Khepri didn't quite understand. Wasn't having enough air necessary to stay alive? "I usually just jump."
It didn't always work though. Sometimes the world just worked the other way around and what went up came back down. Khepri hoped today wasn't like that. Their stomach acted weird at the thought. Given that all the balloons were falling instead of going up they didn't have a good feeling about it. That was bad, if they were feeling blue that meant they were thinking of the other two primary colors. Red was what they needed right now, not those! Putting that thought out of mind they leapt back into the fray. With a gasp Khepri took the deepest breath they could, all the way until their cheeks bulged comically while they headed for the next balloon. It was time to find out if having more air would help. The rest could wait until later.

How careless. Khepri had heard the music from quite a distance away and followed their ears to this place, a club blasting tunes they vaguely recalled hearing before but clearer. They were only letting part of it out which probably meant it wasn't intentional. That happened sometimes with stuff. Like macaroni. Their microwave was still a bit discolored even now but that wasn't the point at the moment. Much like the microwave door after that moment there was a window several floors up that was a crack open, bringing Khepri right back to their original thought. How careless. They shook their head as they leaned one hand on the windowsill while closing it again with the other. Why, the music would just spill out and anyone could just walk in like that. They should probably let the owner know about that. They'd heard rumors one time while walking through an attic that there were suspicions of someone breaking into a place. Wasn't all too far from here either so the same intruder might just be in the area. Maybe even right here. Well, not right here here. Khepri themself was standing here and outside of some trains of thought on quantum physics that made it impossible for anyone else to be standing there. Where were they again? Right, Khepri remembered now. They needed to tell the owner something. Stepping through the unlit room it didn't take them long to run into the person in question -almost literally- and narrowly stop before bowling Jingjing over. Now they just had to say the thing. Standing right behind Jingjing they opened their mouth and began to speak. "Do you think Pavlov thought about feeding his dog when he heard a bell ring?"

Time told no lies but it could be hard to find. Even more fleeting of a concept was the right time, the one that was perfect to act. Khepri kept missing it. Always one moment too early or one moment too late. The results were the same. They weren't ready for it when the right time finally arrived and it slipped through their fingers like sand through the hourglass. Something had to change and change came from within. That was why they'd set off with purpose this time instead of letting their feet carry them. If their feet weren't fast enough they had to learn to run better and if they were too fast they had to learn to pace themselves. A sound pierced through the intense focus that had carried them to the training grounds. Time. Wasn't that the quirk of the man punching the air over there? Farrin O’Rourke, they recalled him introducing himself as. Oberon too, just like they were Sphinx as well. A second name to be a second person, one that can grow to handle the things the first can't. Khepri wasn't there yet. They thought they were back in Egypt but the second person hadn't followed them here. It was still stuck in the past. Maybe that was fine. Khepri wasn't sure they liked that person anymore. They could fight their battles there while Khepri focused on the present. Maybe they could even make another Sphinx. A better one. Their feet had carried them to Farrin before they realized, the lapse of focus changing their plans like water on a shopping list. What were they here for again? "Hey. If you can speed up or slow down does that mean you can always be at the right time?"

Khepri felt cold. Once again they’d been too late. Silent tears ran down their cheeks. Once again their companions had suffered for it. They more saw than felt themself moving towards the crash site. Was Jack Orion dead as well? Had their failure cost another life? Even before they managed to see through the dust cloud they could envision his still form. All that energy, the courage to stand up, the speed to be the first onto the fray, and for what? Just like last time. Just like with Rui. She’d been first too. First into the fray. First to die. The memories were clear now, almost seeming to be overlaid with the scene going on. Khepri was in two places at once, separated by time and space but united in their perception. As they walked closer and closer to the scene of disaster they could almost feel a weight in their arms swaying along with their steps. Had they eaten anything today it would have left their stomach along with the spittle they were retching up, one hand coming up to cover their mouth without them even realizing it. They heard almost as little as they saw when they reached the dust cloud. Their ears were haunted by an incessant ringing that morphed the sounds that reached them, like the fun house mirror equivalent of hearing it increased their pitch and decreased their clarity. There was this… void, inside of them. A hollowness that seemed to suck in sensations before Khepri could ingrain them in their memory, the sensory feedback registering but not being recorded. Just like back then. Just like those four days that were now a haze. They hadn't even had the presence of mind to check on Wendy. She'd lost an arm. Lost it to protect them, even. Khepri still hadn't checked. It could be rationalized that they'd seen her take worse injuries without a problem or that the worst possible issues had to be dealt with first but such thoughts didn't even penetrate through to their clouded mind. The truth was that Khepri was not quite operating on conscious thought right now. A massive figure rose from the cloud and then shrunk once more. Both phenomena were addressed in the same way one would an unexpected breeze, registered but put out of mind instantly. Fear, instinct and a phantom of the past moved their feet. One step in front of the other. It carried them all the way to Jack. His figure so still except… his chest rose and fell? Like a bubble popping their hearing was back and their eyelids blinked the tears out of their eyes by themselves. He wasn't dead? He wasn't dead. It hadn't happened again. Khepri's mind tuned out the rest. When asked later they'd respond that they vaguely remembered tying the shimenawa around Surtr so he couldn't do any more harm. Everything else? Just one more day that was lost in the depths of their memories

Khepri's eyes opened wide. Wheels. Of course! In this day and age so much was mechanized that they might just beat out wheel-less door things like houses, closets and more. But maybe... The machine going off once more derailed their train of thought and by the time Wendy answered their question it was long gone. Their stomach turned. Pupils shrunk and then dilated while their breath caught. There was a hole in her head. That- That wasn't supposed to be there. There were parts all o- With shaking hands Khepri bent down to scoop up some of the clay. Wendy got to it first. That was good. The talking after even better. She was fine. Spiffy. Excellent. Khepri blinked slowly once and then put a wide smile back on their face. "Thank you!" They happily replied to Enma, assuming it was a compliment unless proven otherwise. Even then proof was subjective and people didn't always say what they meant. Their smile widened. There was no way Enma meant anything bad! An outfielder was definitely more like outgoing than outcast, to assume otherwise would be outlandish. "I'll go get some water bottles for the practice, do either of you want anything else too? I'll be right back before you know it!"Turning on their heel once both of them answered Khepri dashed away at full speed, trying to stay as steady as possible even though the world seemed weirdly out of focus and it was a bit hard to maintain balance. The moment they were behind a corner they put their palm up against it, a shiver running through them -probably because the wall was in the shade and colder than the surroundings- before they threw up. Huh, did they eat something that didn't agree with them? Hmm, it might be the candy coated mackerel. Or the honeyed pickles. Maybe the instant coffee they made with soda instead of water? They weren't sure but they could figure that out later. Their new friends needed stuff! Adding a bucket and a mop to their mental list of things to get Khepri continued dashing on, eager to get back to Enma and Wendy once they'd gotten all the items they needed.

"I DON'T THINK I'M A CARTOON CHARACTER BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO TELL SINCE MOST CARTOON CHARACTERS DON'T KNOW EITHER! WHY ARE WE YELLING?!" Khepri shouted back at Surtr. Their earlier words didn't seem to be getting through. It was like bashing your head against the wall or getting punched repeatedly in the face. Huh, was that what he felt like? "NO! IT'S NOT TERRIBLE! KEEP EXPLAINING WHAT YOU CAN DO!" Wait a second... Cartoon villains always explained their powers and monologued in weird ways. Was this stranger self-projecting? Khepri had never met a cartoon character before except for that one time so they weren't sure whether he was one but if so that meant their plan would be even more effective than expected. A giant rope was the best way to capture a villain like that. "I know names are serious, that's why I always remember them in full!" Khepri yelled back at Jack with a nod and a much less predatory smile than they'd aimed at Surtr. "THAT'S SURPRISINGLY THOUGHTFUL OF YOU, EXCEPT FOR WANTING TO KILL ME BUT NO ONE'S PERFECT! HE ALREADY SAID MY NAME," Khepri shouted back once more, suddenly far less certain of his promise to remember them. They themself had been flying at the time Jack had said it and even still they'd heard and remembered. "IT'S KHEPRI, NOT VERY NICE TO MEET YOU WHAT'S YOUR NAME? I'LL REMEMBER IT TOO!"
A quirk boosted leap narrowly allowed them to not be crushed underfoot, the rushed motion causing them to tumble head over heel towards the shrine. Righting themself they dashed inside, passing Jack on the way and darting their eyes left and right. There! A trapdoor. Unless this shrine had a proclivity for spike traps that likely meant it had a basement, now all they had to do wa- Huh, what was that shout they just heard. Ultimate move? Dust fell down from the ceiling due to the sheer force of the earth shaking. That couldn't be good. Rushing back out they grabbed the other end of the shimenawa and crouched down to leap with their full force behind it. The nails holding it to the shrine looked rusty and the shrine looked old. With some luck they'd be able to tear it free mid leap and bring it along. Just in case though they kept a loose grip on it. Succeeding in getting out of the trajectory of the growing shadow up above was far more important than bringing the rope along. "Wendy! Take cover!" Khepri shouted right before leaping full force at her and Bugger to cover the distance as quickly as possible. It was time for Khepri to listen to their own advice. With how fast they were going they were sure they could catch up to the sound of their words and do so. The moment they'd reach Wendy the catbug would follow her and try to survive the blow however they could. Today wasn't a good day to die. They hadn't even told Yoko yet that- Huh. Told her what? As the shadow began to shrink again Khepri realized that was a thought for another time.
TL;DR: -Khepri engages in a friendly shouting match with Surtr and politely introduces themself once more since he didn't catch it the first time. -Informs Jack that they fully understood what he was saying. Spoiler warning: They didn't. -Checks for a basement and has their plan interrupted by a sudden shout, earthquake and ominous feeling of 'oh shit I'm going to die' -Leaps towards Wendy and shouts for her to take cover -Absolutely triggers no death flags on the way shut up Tags: Jack Orion, Wendy, Fanthes |

Khepri nodded in agreement. Roofs were nice and warm. Hmm, were they not supposed to do that here in Japan? Khepri would have to check later to make sure. They knew a nice roof next to a police station. Surely they'd tell them if they were doing something wrong there. "Oh." There wasn't much else Khepri could reply to that. Maybe they shouldn't try sleeping on a roof after all. "Thank you!" They added with a bright smile at the compliment, looking Yoko in the eye as they replied. "You look great too."Turning to face Luna when she answered the most important question Khepri nodded along. "They taste great but I don't tend to get the ones with honey myself because I'm afraid of bears. Why? Because bears can run at 30 miles an hour and Ueno zoo isn't far from here. That means a bear could jump at me the moment I open those animal crackers. Why would that bear be here? Because they can smell fear and I fear them."Well, some of them. Most were nice even if they were a bit territorial. Khepri once had a great time cooperating with one to get into a trash can. It wasn't nearly as peaceful as today was shaping up to be though. Doing nothing, getting snacks and just relaxing was nice now and then. Maybe they could even build that trebuchet they'd been meaning to. Hmm, they wondered if they could find any books on the subject around here. Maybe they could hit the library later. There were so many books there that helped with falling asleep, it would be the best place for Yoko to get some rest too. "Tilapia are great. The crocodiles can't get out here in Japan. I can't get the good ones right now though because I can't fly anymore."Khepri suddenly stopped in their track, eyes going wide and mouth opening slightly. "Pickles and honey go great together. Tilapia can be pickled. What if, wha-" They had to call Stellar. Not now though, they couldn't just start a phone call in the middle of a conversation. "Yoko, remember Pickled Honey Tilapia for me." There, with two people thinking about it there was no way they'd forg- huh that butterfly over there had an interesting pattern on its wings. Aww, it was gone before they could point to it. "We're almost there. I found a lot of shops here by looking in the right places. They're usually on the side of the road unless it's one of the smaller ones with wheels." Khepri happily explained. "What do you two want? There's this great place near here that does Chinese style skewers but also lets you bring your own ingredients if you ask persistently enough."

"Don't be afraid, I also don't know." With a friendly nod Khepri reassured Jouma. There was no shame in not knowing something. That was the first step to finding out about something! "Yeah, we can ask whoever made that!" Khepri responded while pointing at the trail of disturbed forest floor. It was littered with broken twigs, shards of a strange substance and mysterious indents at certain intervals. It reminded Khepri of when they'd went bobsledding uphill.
Happily following the trail while humming a tune off-key it didn't take long for them to find what they were looking for. Signs of habitation! Sort of. There was a shimmer in the air that had the same shape as a door with a handle. The closer they got the clearer it became, the seemingly invisible door turning more and more solid with each step and even revealing a building around it. It was all hard lines and gleaming metal, the kind of place that would be perfect to sit out a tropical storm in while listening to the rain patter against the hyperdense fortified alloy. "Let's go knock!" Khepri said enthusiastically, presumably addressing Jouma. They'd forgotten to check whether he was still there though so maybe they weren't? If the building could get more real then maybe Jouma could get less real the further they went from him? That'd be a problem. Khepri didn't like it when anyone stopped existing. Turning to look over their shoulder as they knocked on the door they put their object permanence to the test to see if they could spot him. Huh. Was it just them or did they not hear their own words despite them leaving their mouth? How odd. Was it just them that didn't hear them or did no one? Khepri had no idea! |
