I

t was a cloudless day. Fitting for the occasion. Today, Farrin wasn't training atop his grassy hill at the back of UAU's training grounds. Instead, he was moseying over the university's front gate. Thanks to Barty and the other heroes playing guardian to the time-turner during his time in Japan, Farrin had arrived at the campus a few days earlier than his love, Sada, and his best friend from Hero Prep, Kenta. Today would rectify part of that mistake because, today, Kenta arrived! So, the time-turner was off to greet his friend and show him to his dorm room if the lad required. 

Pride and the oddest sense of optimism guided Farrin's every step. He, Sada, and Kenta had all made it into one of the most renowned hero universities around the globe. They had passed the entrance exam, and now they were collectively readying to begin their new journeys. It wasn't often Farrin found some pep in his step, but today he had. A few of UAU's oddballs aside, he hadn't met many people of interest. It would be nice to see one of the few actual friends he had. 

A few students were beaming across the training field tracks. With a chronokinetic burst, Farrin dipped out of the way of one and sped ahead of another. Then he was beyond the training field that lay between the dorms and the front of the school. The entrance was in sight, and Kenta was to arrive any minute if his texts were any indication. After Farrin's arrival in Japan, he made it a habit never to be late. Mum always emphasized never wasting people's time. It wasn't so easy after she was gone and he was living on the streets, but in a world of relative normalcy, if this could be called normal, he wished to honor her every wish. And, well, of course, he wanted to see his friend.

Kenta wasn’t in a particular rush. Partially because having most of your life packed in one big luggage case, handbag, and backpack made you a bit slower than usual, even if you were tugging the heaviest luggage with some assistance of your quirk. Though it was mostly to make it more comfortable, he couldn’t just openly carry it. Also, part of him wanted to savor the moment…he got off the bus that got him from the train station, after spending hours on the train… all this time and miles separating him from home, and getting him closer to the next step.

It felt surreal. Even if he was in hero prep school, getting here was a pipe dream. Many had it, but most failed. And there he was trying to keep afloat in that competitive sea, making money for rent, training, and doing stuff for his internet channel while not getting busted…lots of balls to juggle there.

Part of what got him to actually get through it I probably making some friends. Real friends. At least in his mind. The type of people he knew he could bug or ask about something and they’d listen. They cared about what he had to say. And he cared about them. The cheery hype Sada provided, the determined but fiery drive Farrin had. And he somehow managed to add to it with his… bouncy energy.
Even as he approached the gate he had a bit of bounce to his step, bobbing his head singing along to the tune until he saw someone at the gate. Didn’t take long for him to recognize who. With a wide smile he called out “Oi, Farrin! You didn’t need to wait out for me you know!” as he picked up his pace a bit, finishing the final steps towards UAU.

t was only a matter of minutes that ticked away before Farrin found Kenta approaching UAU's front gates. Few were the individuals the time-turner was actually happy to see. He could likely count them on a single hand. Sada, his Nan, maybe Barty, and Kenta. Four. Yup. One hand was all it took. He even had a digit to spare. 

"Heyyy, how yuh' doin', boyo? Was the trip 'ere easy enough fer' yuh?" Farrin started throwing his hand out to lock with one of Kenta's and then pulling him in for the old NYer bro-hug. Didn't matter that Kenta wasn't from the States, he was getting the bro-hug. "Good ta' see yuh." Where Farrin had seen Sada just a few days prior, he hadn't seen Kenta since graduating from Hero Prep. Still not too long ago, but it was over a month. Look at them now, taking on one of the greatest hero universities around the world. 

"Yuh need help carryin' anythin?" He offered.

Whether Kenta handed him a bag or not, Farrin would lead the duo through the gates and start down the path that would lead across the training fields and toward the dorms. The main lecture hall, UA's most recognized building, was dead ahead, but they would be looping around so Kenta could drop his stuff off before getting the full tour of the place. The campus was absolutely massive. The training fields were a mix of gravel and grass that expanded out toward the back of the walls. Beside those fields on one side were the aforementioned dorms, on the other were some of the indoor training facilities. Further out, beyond what the eye could see from the front gate were the paths that led to Grounds Beta & Gamma, which were like small cities in their own right. Farrin wasn't the biggest fan of academics, but UAU was packing. 

"We're in the same dorm buildin'. I think yer on the second floor. I'm on the third," he explained as they began their trek.

While Kenta was born and raised in Japan, he wasn’t that much of a stickler for a traditional greeting. So he gladly offered his hand to shake the offered one and gladly returned the hug from the American student. Well, American/Irish he supposed… with a Japanese uncle. Quite a branching tree there. “Eh, it was fine…a bit too long for my taste, but I’ve gotten used to train rides when I was getting to prep school from home…time sure flies doesn’t it? Good to see you too” he said with a smile. They didn’t really see each other since graduating, both preparing for the big move and just saying their goodbyes to the closer family.

“Well, I won't say no to help with at least one bag,” he said with a slight smirk offering the handbag he was carrying, pulling the main luggage on his own. And so they went into the ground of UAU, and the terrain was expansive. The main hall you saw in the news, the track fields with people running, and a whole lot of terrain going deeper into the school “Hell, this place was massive…how long would it take to get from here to the city where I had my exam?” he said thinking out loud, remembering the chaos he had to endure through in the Beta grounds…

As Farrin explained their places in the dorm he said “I see you got a bit of a lay of the land. Do any of the dorm rooms have balconies? Gonna make it easier for a hangout…though I guess I can always jump through the window” he half-joked before asking “Speaking of, are we still waiting on her to join us or did you have a chance to give Sada a tour before me?” he said with a cheeky grin. From what they talked about between the three it was a bit of a toss-up which of the two came to UA first…and he could imagine there would be a lot of jumping through windows to their rooms with those two involved.

hat had always scored Kenta a few points in Farrin's book. Many in Japan were quite formal. Farrin, a mostly homeless boy for seven years before moving to Japan from across the world, was not. He didn't really do bowing or honorifics other than with the elderly. The perceived disrespect had earned him quite a number of odd stares and criticisms. He wasn't trying to be rude. He just didn't think of people on those terms - even now. He sure as hell wasn't calling everyone sir and madam back home or using many other American equivalencies. In any case, Kenta was pretty laidback with the formalities which, funny enough, earned him more respect than all the up-tights out there. 

"Yes," Farrin said with a grin, "Yes, time certainly does fly." Okay, so no, Chronokinesis didn't make Farrin fly, but boy could he move fast. Kenta was one of the few around the globe, even among their peers from Hero Prep, that actually knew the nature of Chronokinesis. Namely, that it was a time manipulation quirk. 

"Yuh' said your test was in Grounds Beta, right? They've transport that can get yuh' there in a few minutes, but on foot, I'm no' so sure. At least not without some time-turnin'. I can run there in a few minutes but only when I'm usin' me' quirk." 

 Farrin's exam was in the school's Unforeseen Simulation Joint. The downpour zone to be exact. It was much closer than Grounds Beta and Gamma, and still rather large, though not quite as much as the two formerly mentioned mock cities. How much money went into operating this place? 

The time-turner couldn't help but grin at Kenta's comment while leading him across the field and onto the next path that turned toward Height's Alliance, the school's dorms. Yeah, there would certainly be quite a bit of sneaking around happening. 

"Yup, e'ery room has a balcony. Quite convenient if yuh' ask me. N' nah, Sada's 'ere the day after next," was all he replied with. He'd let that topic end right there. "N' yeah, I've been peekin' around the place, seein' what it has ta' offer. It's like Hero Prep on steroids. Several buildins' wit' changeable environments fer various forms o' trainin', widest range o' workout equipment I've e'er seen in their gym. Trainin' robots like those in most o' our exams fer our use. N', again, the campus is entirely madness. It's brilliant, n' kinda mind-blowin'." 

He hadn't shared his excitement with his peers thus far. They were all strangers, and Farrin hadn't been the quickest to befriend strangers. Crossing that line took time. Now, he had one of his friends with him though, so he could nerd out about how he was going to take his training to the next level - something even he hadn't thought possible.

It was a bit of a stroke of luck that pulled them together. In general, Farrin had a reputation of a gruff and rude person back in prep school, and tended to keep to himself. Part of Kenta trying to approach him was the curiosity to see how prickly he was…but he also remembered his own days of being alone with no friends. He just figured he’d apricate someone reaching out.

He laughed a bit at Farrin’s grin saying “Well, I guess for you it moves just at the pace you want it to. I hope you actually got a bit of rest and didn’t overwork yourself training eh? I’m sure they’ll be running us ragged here before we know it” he mused. Farrin could be driven, but sometimes to his own detriment.

Though Kenta did perk up at the offer of a jog replying “Sounds like a plan, probably need to stretch out my bones a bit after sitting on the train that long. Maybe we can pass the area where you had your exam? That one sounded like a doozy” he mused remembering some sharing of stories about their exams between their group.

He nodded as he mentioned Sada not being there yet, not teasing him too much about her. Knowing the pair he missed her enough as is. He listened to him reveal what he did know, clearly a lot of excitement in his voice. “I hope the bots are customizable here… don’t need to have them all go as hard as for the exam” he joked as they moved towards the dorms before adding “I did hear they have a really good chef at the cafeteria. Maybe we wont have to sneak out of school to get some good food all the time” he joked before adding “Kind of hard to believe, but we made it. I know this is like, jumping from the frying pan into the fire…but we actually made it” he mused as they were slowly getting closer to the dorms.

est? He could rest when he was dead. Between temporal sifting in his sleep, which was even worse when he was apart from Sada, and his general aversion to wasting time, Farrin slept enough to get some gas in the tank and then got right back to his training regimen each day. He hadn't skipped a beat between graduating Hero Prep and getting into UAU. He even tossed some bullies around after orientation. It hadn't taken him long to start developing a bit of a reputation again.

"Eh, well, I've a sparring session scheduled wit' one o' the professors, Leonid, before the end o' the week so... can't say restin' up much is on the agenda." 

That was another item on the list. He was the only student, at least that he knew of so far, that had requested a one-on-one bout with one of the former pro-hero professors on their first week. Who better to throw himself at than a former pro? If he could hold his own against a real hero right off the bat, then by the time he was done here he would certainly walk out from these walls one day as one of the very best heroes. 

"Anyway, yeah, I figure we drop yer stuff off, I show yuh' the dorm, n' then we can check out all the rest." 

Surely there was some way to turn down the villain bot's difficulty? But Farrin had no intention of doing so. If anything, he wanted the murder machines turned up to eleven. No sense in taking it easy on himself. He had to earn the name Oberon. 

"We sure did, bud," Farrin responded to Kenta's excitement. 

They were coming up on Heights Alliance, the student dorms, fast. This was where the next step of their journey began. Hero Prep was behind them, true heroism - ahead.

“Already going one on one with a Teacher?! You gotta ease into these things a bit sometimes you know” he said with somewhat exaggerated, but still honest concern. He did know that Farrin if kept unchecked, would not sleep until his body would shut down sometimes. Kenta could appreciate his drive, hell he wasn’t a stranger to a nightery for studying or pushing himself working out… though one time when he dozed off on top of a building during one of his streams also let him know running too low on the battery was going to get him killed

He gave his friend a light jab on the ribs saying “Just don’t overwork yourself. If you're taking on retired heroes you got to be in top condition after all. Plus if something bad happens to you before she comes here Sada is gonna kill you AND me” he joked again. By no means he’d want to hamper his friend's drive, he just felt going a bit slower was gonna be healthier. Though he could understand his friend's rush sometimes.

As they came closer to the actual school he asked “Did you link up with your roommate yet? To be honest I need to find out if mine is around already…I may have done some of the registration stuff a bit fast and loose before getting here” he said with a sheepish grin on his face.

arrin shrugged, cocky grin framing his face. Ease into things? When had Farrin ever eased into anything? He sprinted onward at full speed, paving the path between who he was now, and the Oberon he had to become. From the look of things thus far, there were only a small handful of their freshmen peers that were fully combat capable. Villain bots were one thing, but a real thinking being was another matter entirely. And if Farrin was going to tackle a tactical opponent, why not start with those that stood among the best? 

"Eh, I'll be fine, boyo. I just need ta' know where I stand when up against the real thing. Hero Prep only had us sparrin' our professors that last year, n' you know they were takin' it waaaayyy too easy. Here, well, I know the professors still dial it down a tad, but I hear it's nothin like hero prep. If yuh' prove yuh've what it takes, they'll bring it up ta' the next level." 

Farrin was practically brimming with electric excitement. The first two years of Hero Prep were almost entirely focused on honing one's quirk and learning things like law, ethics, strategy, and typical academics. It was only in their senior year that real sparring was introduced, and even then it wasn't often they were allowed to really kick it up to max. It was understandable. No hero prep school wanted the bad publicity that would come with maiming their students, but this line of work demanded sacrifice. They were putting their lives on the line. No sense holding back. Now, Farrin would face professors that wouldn't have to - if he could push them to their limits, they would deliver. 

"Nah, I'm goin' solo it seems," he answered regarding the roommate situation.  

You could request a roommate or ask to be left to your own devices. Farrin went with the latter on account of he and Sada certainly spending a bunch of time in each other's rooms. Even despite that fact, Farrin appreciated his privacy. He wasn't one to meditate, but he did dive deeper into himself, via Chronokinesis, practicing his ability to read time. Doing that on-demand required solitude. 

"Well, 'ere's the dorm," he said as they came up on Heights Alliance, where Farrin would lead them into their own dorm building's lobby.

He shook his head with a smile seeing Farrin’s grin. He knew that sometimes trying to dissuade his friend from something was like trying to bash through a brick wall. He was as enthusiastic as he was stubborn. Though at least he felt he could try to get him to reign it in a bit if he was persistent, and Kenta was pretty patient.

He could understand the excitement. Hero prep school was a lot more like…well, school. They at least had the time and space to hone their quirks, which they couldn’t do much before, but it was a lot of technical or theoretical stuff. Even when they started sparring in the last year it was all really reigned in. Compared to all that the entrance exam was like being an egg cracked into a sizzling pan.

Kenta wasn’t quite as fired up. Of course, he was excited, and he wanted to give it his all. It just felt like Farrin had this burning desire, a need to go out there and change the world. And the confidence that he was already capable of bringing change. Kenta was very much aware he needed to learn…to figure out how he could best use his talents to help. It was a bit scary, but also exciting… the biggest leap he was going to take.

As they walked Kenta would have a more spaced-out, deep-in-thought look on his face. As Farrin announced they were at the dorms, he needed to shake his head a bit before replying “Bah…sorry, zoned out a bit there…Wow the dorms are big” he commented as they continued to walk towards the lobby “So, anyone from your exam group that was interesting? Some cool quirk or something? Dunno about you but I don’t think any of the guys from prep school were in my group” he mused as they entered the lobby, with him looking around the clean, pristine halls.

arrin had certainly been impressed by the other applicants he had been tested with. From what he heard, both had passed, and that hadn't surprised him in the least. Rather than play obstacles to one another, the trio had worked together to overcome the exam's many challenges. In the end, they triumphed. 

"Yeah, both of 'em were quite capable. One, Johanna, usin' the hero alias Ironclad, could manipulate metal wit' a touch. Make herself some armor, or use it ta' barrage n' enemy n' such. The other, Miroru, or Prism, could manipulate EM particles n' such. She could bend light ta' create signs fer' us a follow or blind enemies in fields o' darkness, or even stop weapons from firin' by removin' heat n' such." 

Both had impressed. Johanna with her raw physical prowess, and Miroru with her power's flexibility and the precision with which she wielded her quirk. It wouldn't have surprised him if either of the two had also attended a hero prep school or at least received some form of training. He could go on a rant about how the test had gone, but instead, Farrin turned to face his friend. He wasn't the best at reading people, but Farrin's lack of social skills had been compensated for in this instance with his and Kenta's tenure as friends. Something was gnawing at the lad. 

"N' no problem, bud. Look, we're gonna be aces 'ere. We've got this. We went through Hero Prep. We can get through this." 

Kenta's greatest weakness had always been himself. He got in his own head, in his own way too. There were few shackles heavier than those we imposed on ourselves. Farrin was the least social of the trio between himself, Kenta, and Sada, but he was confident in his abilities. Brazenly confident. It's why others in Hero Prep had avoided him. They couldn't bully the oddball, because this oddball could beat the snot out of them. If he could inspire some of that confidence in Kenta, there were no limits to how high the lad could fly.

He listened intently as Farrin spoke about his group in the exams. Sounded like some pretty cool guys who knew how to use their quirks well. His own group had some impressive performers as well, not to mention the teacher they were pitted against. Manipulating metal, light, his friend could bend freaking time…and he had his gel. Sure he could make a lot of it…though sometimes he couldn’t help but wonder how well it would put up with more directly powerful quirks. He already did know he needed to be careful with how hot or cold it got…

After Farrin shared his experiences it seemed his friend managed to feel out the bit of doubt clouding over his head. He scratched the back of his head saying “Yeah, yeah, I don’t mean to be gloomy, just… this is a big deal. Hero Prep school is one thing, But this is University now…United Alliance, the place everyone dreams of getting into! I guess I just want to be sure the fact I got in isn’t wanted…but I’m sure you’re going to make sure I don’t slack right?” he finished with a grin. Over knowing the foreign man he learned Farrin is driven to a fault. And in a way it was inspiring to see him push himself…even though sometimes he needed to be reigned in just a little bit. After a moment Kenta added “So, If I remember right my room is like… 4-5th floor? Should have it written down…I hope” he ended with a bit of a sheepish laugh, fishing out his phone to see if he actually noted which room he was in.

arrin nodded with Kenta's reply. Just as it was in Hero Prep, Farrin would yank Kenta out of bed and into the training fields if necessary. Kenta was his own obstacle, one Farrin would help him overcome, but ultimately it was his friend's wall to climb. This was the place to do it, the last bastion before they ventured out into the world and looked danger in the eyes. 

"They need us, boyo. The people out there, they're waitin' on folk like us ta' become the best we can be, ta' keep 'em safe. Villainy thrives in shadows. It's our job 'ere ta' learn ta' be light. We can do it. Dun' doubt it fer' a second." 

Melodrama wasn't a card often in Farrin's hand, but sometimes it had its place. It was true, though. Villainy spread in darkness, wishing everyone would look away until it was strong enough to snuff out the light. It was up to them and their peers to scorch away the dark before it became too much for the world to bear. One step at a time, though. One step at a time. 

"Second floor, bud. I'm on three. C'mon, let's head in. After that, right back out ta' the trainin' field. You'll get the tour n' a good workout along the way!"

Kenta did like his sleep sometime… though as much as he’d complain at Farrin he ended up running the track with him in the mornings. And even with how seemingly unstoppably driven Farrin was, he did manage to get him to wind down from time to time. Though he had to admit Sada was way better at distracting the foreign hero in training…understandably so.

“Heh…spoken like someone who cant wait to get out there and kick ass already huh?’ he joked jabbing his elbow at his friend's ribs before adding “But yeah, we got this far…but I guess really this is where it gets serious huh?”. As his friend directed him to the upper floor and also promised an impromptu training run, he sighed a bit as he moved with his suitcase upstairs “Somehow I knew yo were gonna say that…at least I didn’t pack my track stuff to deep!”
