I never thought I'd see

Leveraging as many connections as she could, Iphi was set up in a remote facility with some of the most advanced equipment. She was there because she wanted to conduct some live research on recreating the methods in which quirks operated and making support equipment for those like herself with less of a ‘traditional’ quirk. Sure, there had been plenty of research into the application of equipment to facilitate quirk usage with heroes and villains popping up over the last few decades with a wide variety of quirks, some similar to what one would expect from a comic book superhero and others swung wildly in either direction from being very mundane to completely uncontrollable. She even knew some people personally who were actively researching the potential to extract the quirk factor to see if it could be applied to other people or even inanimate things! Truly fascinating stuff.

The idea to conduct this study in this originated from a question posed by a student in a class she was subbing. ‘Why can’t we make gear that could work like our quirks?” It was truly one of the few times in recent years she was completely caught off guard, having spent a long time sorting through the well of a brain she had for either an example or any studies actively being conducted before ultimately coming up with nothing. Even though she likely hadn’t been the only person to ever think of this she did have the means to put it into practice. So through a combination of the school's network and navigating the hero network she put a word out

Looking for willing test subjects to demonstrate and explain the functions of their quirk in a controlled environment.

At the predetermined place deep in the heart of Tokyo, she waited in the control room for anyone who chose to accept this offer, sitting at a console in front of a glass window where the person, once they entered the room and greeted her, would end up to conduct the tests.

A rather unique test subject was picked for today. While Iphi usually let the people who were interested in volunteering come to her instead the head of quirkology at UAU had actually recommended a specific individual. He mentioned that this 'Sebastian Sinclaire' had a quirk worth studying even among the other students but added that he would need...motivation. Iphi figured given what basic information she was given from his school profile that food would be the best motivator so she put a message through the network to him adding that there would be complimentary snacks and drinks IF he showed up at the proposed time. For now, all that she could do was wait and see if he took the bait.

Well, technically it could, but it was just way more effort than it was worth to try and get a setup like that going, but I digress. The point is that free shit is one of the few things in life that motivates him to engage with the world. To be honest, the whole thing sounded a bit fishy to him, but he was a broke college student. Any chance he had at a free meal, he needed to take it. That is to say, even if he were financially stable, he still wouldn't shy away from a free meal. Even if he were a millionaire, he'd absolutely fiend for a free meal. Food always tastes better when it's free. Agreeing to meet at the proposed time, he set an alarm to wake up and get ready to go. Then he hit snooze on that alarm. Then he hit snooze on the backup alarm. Then he hit snooze again on the alarm after that. Fortunately, he always set dozens of alarms because he knew that his future self would be a right bastard about waking up. Unfortunately, he ran through a few too many alarms to get ready on time, so she'd just have to deal with him showing up in his pajamas: a penguin onesie. It probably wasn't going to be a problem. It's not like his quirk required him to actually look like he gave a damn. The wait for her test subject soon eclipsed the promised time. Normally in a situation like this, she would just follow up with a message or phone call but the professor did mention some...eccentricities with this particular student. So against her better judgment, she decided to extend the timeline and pushed her next meeting further out to compensate for him. Something she may regret depending on how cooperative he would ultimately ends up being.

After a few more minutes the door flew open and Sebastian made his appearance known. Seemed like the professor was right on his money with this one, he immediately reminded her of some of her more "strong-willed" classmates when she attended UAU. Standing up from her seat, clipboard in hand she approached him to greet him properly "Good Afternoon. My name is Iphigenia Pavlina but please call me Iphi." she extended a hand to shake while her brain hopped into processing mode "Slightly older than your standard freshman I estimate 20-21 years of age. 5'11. With his frame, I would approximate 170 lbs. White hair looks natural and not dyed, perhaps a mutation." in the split second she had greeted him she was able to intake that much information and mentally stored it in a 'file' where she would put the rest of the information she would learn about him.

"I'm sure you're eager to indulge yourself in the food that is being provided. I do require testing prior to eating so as to eliminate any variables when it comes to your quirk." she took a few steps toward the door to the testing chamber and opened it. "In the center of this room, you will find a small headpiece and wrist wraps. These are to monitor your vitals and brain activity during the test." she pointed to the window and then her own workstation "I will be outside of the room monitoring and taking notes. If you have any questions now is the time to ask, but if not I ask that you please enter and explain to me in as much detail as possible how your quirk functions." she took her seat, giving a small smile "And thank you for your cooperation, Sebastian."

Immediately after hearing that, he completely lost all of his vigor. He exhaled with an exaggerated frown, blubbering his lips as he did. As the air left him, he deflated, hunching forward. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I get the drill..." he muttered, slowly dragging his feet across the ground as he made his way into the chamber. Pulling the hood of the penguin onesie back, he slapped the helmet over his head, not bothering to fix or adjust his hair to make himself look less ridiculous. He put on the wrist wraps too after wriggling his hands out of the flippers to roll up his sleeves as well. Everything in this place seemed pretty high-tech—definitely more than he was accustomed to. Granted, he didn't get out very much. It did get him wondering though: How much did all of this even cost? What kind of operation was this chick running here? Is this the sort of thing that pays really well? Honestly, he had no idea, but it did suddenly reinvigorate him. He straightened himself out and channeled every ounce of rizz in his body. Even with his overt desire to take the easier path at least he was agreeable to the terms. She was pretty positive that it was these traits that had labeled him as 'difficult' from the perspective of the professor. Not something she wasn't able to work with in fact there was an aspect of this study that took personality traits into account when it came to quirk usage. They were considered an evolutionary step in humans after all and evolutionary traits weren't always purely biological, some were sociological.

Having taken her seat and with a notepad, she scribbled down a quick evaluation of Sebsastians personality traits. With the vitals being monitored and her knowledge of biological traits she was quick to pick up on the specific brain activity and increased heart rate meant. His words only confirmed the fact that there was arousal and given that they were the only two in the facility at that moment it was likely directed at her.

"I make the average of every Pro Hero. You'll make the same when you graduate from UAU." she tapped the pen against the clipboard she held "This facility isn't mine if that's what you were getting at. Now onto the tests." she hit a button which brightened the lights in the room, part of the observation was for her to see how the quirk manifested, and with the advanced monitoring equipment she would need clear footage "Tell me the name of your quirk and give a basic demonstration. Any additional details would be extremely helpful." crossing her legs and leaning slightly forward her eyes narrowed. Her interest had been peaked by the combination of his traits and the recommendation by the school, she had very high expectations for this quirk after all this preamble

Sure, that shit was higher than a normal job, but it wasn't enough for him to live a lavish life. Hell, the part of his brain that governed disgust was probably going big mode with how much he wanted to vomit at the thought of actually putting in the work to graduate. Disgusting. "Ughhhhhhhhhhhh...Really? That's a bummer," he exhaled, deflating once again. "Yeesh! Warn a guy before you flash him," he said in his usual sing-song tone, throwing a hand up over his eyes. "At least give him some time to take out his phone to snap a picture." nailed it. "My quirk's called Elasticity. Anything I touch, I can make elastic." And that was it for his explanation. While there were certainly several important details, he elected to leave them out on account of the fact that he was lazy. None of that shit was all that important—to him, at least—anyway. As for a practical demonstration, he knew exactly what to do. He paced a bit lazily dragging his hand along the air to draw out a hammock in the air: the primary use of his quirk. "Ah so THIS is why the professor advocated for him" she thought to herself, staring intently at Sebastian demostrated what would normally be seen as impossible. Her eyes darted back and forth between the station monitoring the vitals and the actual application of his quirk in real-time. His actual vitals didn't fluctuate at all besides the smallest upward tick that came with all movement, no matter how small or simple it was. She moved on to the brain activity from the past few seconds replaying the detection of neurons and that is where she found something unusual. It wasn't a chemical response or activation similar to how an animal with venom would employ that into their bite or spray it out instead of the part of the brain linked to creativity lit up like a Christmas tree. She hadn't seen many quirks of this caliber it was...was he forcing his will into reality to change the properties?

"Thank you, Sebastian. I'm going to move onto part two, standby." she pressed a button on the console which opened up, revealing holes that were shaped like gloves. She placed her hand inside which caused the ceiling of the room to open up and two large hands came down from the ceiling. She used these to press against the trampoline to see just how far it would stretch. He really did turn the air into having elastic properties.

"Do you have a weight limit?" she took the air and pinched it between her fingers, stretching it as far as it could go until it rebounded on itself. "Also what sensation do you feel and what are you visualizing in your mind when you apply your quirk?" she would need to throw Sebastian into a live fire test shortly but she didn't want to scare him off just yet. Not while there is valuable data to collect.

Hell, even during the entrance exam—while he had an opportunity to test his quirk—he never took it. His quirk was always this powerful, and he always was capable of exercising such fine control over it. Honestly, it was a shame that he was committed to a life of mediocrity, for he certainly had the latent talent to actually achieve great thing with his quirk. She didn't break her gaze from her console even amongst Sebasatians innuendo "Unfortunately they're not mine is use for anything other than research purposes." she pulled on arm out of the console and pressed a sequence of three keys in a row, which caused another hole in the room to open up as a camera descended "Scanning the properties of your quirk. This might tickle." it was harmless in nature but Iphi did have a little bit of a mischievous side to her even if she hid it well. It was very entertaining to see others squirm a bit, especially in the face of the unknown. Regardless the room was slowly traced over by a beam originating from the camera and when it was complete it elevated back into the ceiling.

Iphi enlarged the console screen as she quickly scrolled through the results. Having an infallible memory meant that as long as she was able to comprehend the results even without studying them in detail as she could access this memory whenever she saw fit. "Sebastian we're moving to phase 3. Most of these end in two phases but I'll need more data." she called out on the intercom as she pressed and held another button on her console before speaking into it directly "Deploy two XR512-S" The wall in the room opened up as two rudimentary automatons approximately 6 feet tall stepped out, the central red eye on each lighting up. They stood motionless waiting for another order "Sebastian. These are going to attack you I'll need you to defend yourself with your quirk. Any damage on yourself or the robotics will be repaired." she only gave a few seconds for him to process this new information before she spoke to the automatons "Execute Program 92-A. Full Force" both machines immediately launched into action, flying at Sebastian with a simultaneous punch coming from each side.

Another addition to the long line of worthless inventions were combat robots. Why build a robot to fight when you could build a robot to do clean your room? He was willing to bet that it didn't even have a built in cupholder. Fucking trash robot. Just as he was about to open his mouth to voice his complaints, his brain processed what she had just said. Uncrossing his arms, he pushed the several layers of elastic barriers forward so that they'd run into them, bounce back to where they came, and then be sandwiched between the barriers and the wall. I never thought I'd see

Even if she had changed her image due to her past mistakes, Iphi still had a little bit of a mischevious and reckless streak. Sebastian wasn't ever in real danger these robots were rudimentary at best and the program she launched was set on the second to lowest setting. The automatons had bio-feedback sensors which were being used to collect more data on quirks being used actively. She smirked to herself as he once again brought up the food reward she considered collecting more data and having Sebastian work a little harder but ultimately she did have a promise to keep.

"End Program 92-A. You did a great job Sebastian we're all done here." she backed off of the console, pressing a button as the mechanical hands returned back to where they came from. The robots righted themselves and then returned to their posts with the wall closing behind them. Iphi got up from her seat, placing her clipboard down in her spot she moved to open the door to let Sebastian out "You can just place those wherever, but please be gentle." she gestured to the headpiece and wrist wraps "So, I'll have the team bring the food down. anything specific you had in mind?" she was willing to accommodate any and all requests as he had performed above and beyond what she had expected. Pretty reluctantly but he did it all the same.
