hough the highs of summer cooked Tokyo like it did so many other parts of the world, the evening's setting sun brought with it a cool breeze that brought the city, and Farrin, much relief. The time-turner was on his way to Above & Beyond agency, decked out in his new and improved threads, made by none other than Kei Hada, to put this new outfit to the test. Kei tagged along too, at the agency's request. They were curious to meet the second-year support student that had been lending Farrin a hand. Maybe that meant some future opportunities for the lad? 

While Farrin's outfit looked the same as the one made by Hero Prep's own support students, this particular version of the outfit proved to be far stronger. The thing could take bullets, knives, and even some prolonged fire under various elemental quirks. Still, Barty, being Farrin's guardian in Japan, wanted to put it to the test personally. They would have made their way to the agency earlier, but Farrin had some late classes today, pushing the practice out into the evening. 

"Thanks fer comin' along," Farrin said as the two continued through the city. It was relatively quiet this far from Tokyo's heart. Not entirely devoid of crowds, but there weren't too many. "N' fer puttin this thing together overall. Fits well, n' I just feel stronger too!" 

Farrin wasn't entirely sure how Kei put this one together. He wasn't as familiar with what particular materials maintained such flexibility while providing such protection. He did know, however, that some of his hair was weaved into the outfit. That was kind of his idea, and as weird as it was, the young lad had been saving up strands over the weeks for this exact purpose. See, his hair could retain some of that temporal energy he exuded with his personal chronokinetic field. So, it stood to reason that by weaving some of his hair in, his suit could retain trace amounts of that power from which he could pull when needed. As a result, it took Farrin longer to tire from quirk use and increased his stamina. He gave himself a pat on the back for that one. 

"In any case, I'm sure yer gonna meet Barty, n' maybe Apogee. Barty is a big bastard, n' will come off as incredibly aloof, mechanical even, but he's a good sort. Apo is jus' a few years older than us. Loudmouth, but also a good fella." 

Aside from Sada and Kenta, Kei would be the first person Farrin actually introduced to his 'sort of hero family' in Japan. None of them by blood, but Above & Beyond, even its main hero, Pinnacle, had all had a hand in training Farrin despite how busy they were over the years. While it wasn't the largest agency in Japan, they were all good people. Hopefully, something good could come of this meeting for Kei, as a way to repay the lad for all his help.

It was normal for Kei to take on internships as agencies opened them up. Becoming a student at UAU had made him a viable candidate for them so to speak, his acceptance at the prestigious college evidence of his prowess in his ability to create. While it remained a competitive scene, he was proud to say that he did get the opportunity to work in some firms for a few months at a time.

Having his presence be requested by one though? That was new.

It was embarrassing to admit, but Kei had never even heard of Above & Beyond. Granted he never walked this far from UAU either but still, he'd been on campus for over a year. Surely he would be more familiar with the hero agencies in the city by now. But as it stood, all the knowledge he had about the company were from frantic Google searches he made last-minute before he joined Farrin on the trek there.

Compared to the time-turner he wasn't wearing anything fancy, just a collared shirt and jeans to stave off the heat, though he was secretly thankful they were heading there when the sun was no longer boring down on the duo. Kei smiled up at the hero student as he walked alongside him. "Thanks for invitin' me! And it's no problem, I can't wait to see how they'll go about testin' your new suit. I'm glad it's workin' out so far though."

Weaving hair into the fabric. That had to be one of the crazier things he'd done; he would've never thought to do that himself. The guy had better insight into his Quirk than he did though, which led to the discovery that the strands could store some of his power. This had to be on the same level as when the support student duplicated another person's Quirk to give her a working clone.

Man. Quirks were wild.

Kei opened his journal to write the names the Irishman mentioned. "Barty and... how do you spell Apogee?" His toothpick shifted; native accent thick as he spoke the non-Japanese names. "But I'll be okay! I've worked with all kinds of people so I trust you if you say they're good."

He had to admit though, meeting some higher ups who had no idea who he was beyond his works did give him some pressure. The last thing he wanted was for them to be disappointed by the guy behind the gear.

-P-O-G-E-E" Farrin spelled it out. Apogee was the junior hero of the firm, and Pinnacle's mentee. Fella possessed a killer electricity quirk, though in truth it started out as nothing more than some static buildup. Farrin was quite familiar with Apogee's story by now. Picked on and bullied because his meager quirk didn't compare to his cohorts, but Apo had worked like a madman. Static buildup became a spark, and a spark became a zap, and a zap became a small sphere of actual lightning. 

Man. Quirks were wild.  

It was a sentiment shared between the two. Though, that did beg the question, what exactly was Kei's quirk? He hadn't quite avoided the topic but he didn't demonstrate or otherwise approach it either. Many of the combat "villain apprehension" track students withheld their abilities out of fear of giving their cohorts an edge over them. Farrin wasn't the most forthcoming on the exact nature of his quirk either but had no issue laying out the basics. Usually, he laid out the necessities. He could make things go fast or slow. Only a few knew the nature of such manipulations. Kei ranked among those few. 

"So, I dun' think I've asked yuh yet but I'm curious, what's yer quirk, lad? Is it useful in puttin all these tools together or somethin else entirely?" 

The few crowds thinned out to fewer. A few wayward souls were on their way to local pubs, others already on the way out, stumbling with every step. Harmless though. Tokyo was an incredibly busy city, so it wasn't surprising to see so many out blowing off steam after work. There were a few fellas tight together a couple of meters behind the UAU duo that didn't stand among the drunken sort. Oddly quiet, but that didn't much of anything, right? 

So, Farrin continued to lead them onward. A few more blocks, a couple of turns, and they would fall within Above & Beyond's opening patrol routes. Farrin popped his pocket watch out, thumbing it open, then pocketed it again. Yeah, they might even run into Apo heading out on his nightly evening patrol. Farrin then turned back to the conversation. 

"Yup, they're the real deal. Not in it fer fame n' whatnot, n' even donate ta' charities at the end o' each month dependin on how much the agency brought it."

They weren't the biggest or most reputable agency, but Farrin wouldn't have chosen any other to be trained by. Exemplary heroes says him. Exactly the sort of heroes students should aspire to. Doing good just because they had the ability to do so.

"A-P-O-G-E-E," Kei repeated as he wrote it down, committing the name to memory. Things tend to stick better to him when taken in visually or through action; he easily gets overwhelmed when he hears too much information at once. In one ear, out the other as it were. But he kind of wished that happened when he heard Farrin's next question.

Well, that was a lie. Not hearing it would mean the guy would need to repeat himself, meaning Kei would be asked what his Quirk was twice. Once was stressful enough thanks.

The thing was, the support student didn't like to talk about it. Because as soon as he described it, people would ask further questions. What could he duplicate? (anything that wouldn't kill him if he touched it) What could he not duplicate? (anything that would) Would he get drunk if he refilled alcohol? (theory says yes but he's too young to try it) Does blood count? (yes)

What happens if you use it someone?

(no comment)

So Kei just laughed a bit as he told his usual partial truth. "Oh! I generate more water out of existin' water." He twirled the pencil in his hand, nervous energy coursing through him. "It doesn't help with my buildin' but it saves me trips to the sink." There. Water only. It's saved him so far. Minus the conclusions drawn about how blood had water in it which prompted people to ask about that but- you know what let's not think about it actually.

Instead the sophomore focused on the route they took, which was bringing them ever farther from the university. He was starting to become a little apprehensive, not used to being this far from the familiar on foot, but Farrin seemed fine. So surely that meant they were okay. "That's good to hear. How long have you worked with them?"

ater reproduction? Now that was killer. Never have to refill your bottle. Kei would be a boon in the desert. If they could reproduce his quirk, or somehow apply it to several locations at once, he could solve water crises around the world! That might be a boon to Sada's upcoming venture. One he dreaded to think on, so he wouldn't. 

"Will it only replicate water content or can yuh' replicate whatever it's mixed wit' as well?" He asked, certainly on the blood question's periphery, but not there yet. "Like, if I make a protein shake usin' a water base, would yuh only replicate the water or whatever the waters become attached ta'?" 

Of course, Farrin mind lingered on exercise and practice. He wasn't thinking of exploding people or Nomu anything of the like. Kei's change of topic would land with effect. Farrin knew the answer, but it only reminded him of his own demons. The one's he had faced before, those he would face soon enough. 

"Four years now. Spent a year wit' 'em before startin' Hero Prep, then continued trainin' wit' them after school."

Without them, and Sada, he wouldn't have become the person he was. After seven years alone on New York City's streets, they had become his lifeline. His family. His reason. 

And he would see them again. It was the first thought that crossed his mind as the trudging crowd behind them sped ahead, now surrounding both Farrin and Kei. Yes, he had to see them and to make sure Kei got out of this unharmed. Whoever these people were, they clearly weren't friendly. 

"Two little punks out on their lonesome, this late?" The lead thug taunted, despite it still being relatively early. Well, at least not actually late yet. The lead's eyes swept over Farrin's attire. "Oh, are you two play-pretend heroes? Trying to grow up big and strong? Well, if you want to live to see that happen I suggest turning over any and all valuables." One thug latched onto Farrin. Another made a move to grab Kei. "Or things are gonna get ugly."

Kei's brows rose at the oncoming question, so familiar like the others, until it the hero student referred to beverages. He let out a strained laugh, then sighed in an attempt to calm down because stop being stressed out over simple questions Kei you're becoming suspicious. "It's water only, so I'd dilute the shake if anythin'. Also it'd have to be mostly water, otherwise it'd be hard for me to target the source y'know?" Another partial truth, for he was underestimating his own ability this time. This is totally fine.

They even segued into Farrin's past experience, which he was thankful for. "Four years. Wow, you must be really dedicated to this huh?" Now that Kei could relate to. While he didn't stay with a specific agency for that long, he took up any opportunity he could to work in as many support companies as possible over the years, soaking up the knowledge imparted on him like a sponge. And look where he was now, into his second year in the most prestigious institution in Japan. He took some pride in that.

Unfortunately, such status didn't matter when they get surrounded by a bunch of thugs.

Oh god, now this wasn't good.

Kei's eyes were wide as he scanned the people around them, worried about the numbers they had on the duo. Another frantic laugh escaped him at the leader's demand. "Valuable? I got nothin' valuable!" A total and obvious lie, he was even holding his journal when he said that.

The grab on his arm caused him to yelp, and he tried to weigh his options because he sure wasn't trained enough to pull away without repercussions. He turned to Farrin. "So uh, people you work with, they don't happen to patrol here do they?"

edicated? His (somewhat) newly made family aside, heroics was his life. When he was a wee lad, he wanted to be just like his parents. Now, he was out to make his mother proud. She was gone, but her values, her aspirations, her dreams - they lived on through him. 

"Only one that might be close is Apogee," he started, unamused by their guests, "but we're just outside his route. Dun know if he'll hear their wailin."

Farrin didn't believe in heroic brutality and the like, but these guys didn't know that. Maybe they would back off? 

"What did you say?" The lead spat, his eyes locked onto Farrin, before falling to the time-turner's pocket.

He snatched at a silver chain that hung out of the pocket and pulled out the family heirloom. A golden pocket watch with an emerald encrusted on the outer casing. One of the other thugs began to pat Kei down. Their proximity to Kei was the only thing keeping Farrin from smashing the lead thug's face in immediately. 

"Give that back," he warned. 

"Oh? Nothing valuable? Get them out of sight!" The thug ordered his posse. The entirety of the group shuffled, pushing and shoving Farrin and Kei into the closest alley. "You see, we don't appreciate liars," he continued as the collective group shuffled into the alleyway, "and I certainly don't appreciate being given orders from kids so-" 

"Shut yer feckin' gob n' give me me' watch," Farrin cut him off as he recovered.

No weapons brought to bear yet. No swings were taken. Technically, he wasn't supposed to act yet, not until it was unequivocally self-defense, but they had just taken the pocket watch his mother had given him, and if he let the thugs act first, it might start with Kei. The lad was smart, but Farrin wasn't sure if support department students received even basic combat training. 

"Now listen here, punk," the thug said, pulling out a knife, and pointing it toward Farrin's neck, "I said I don't like little shits like you giving me orders. Do you understand? I call the shots here! Your lives are in my hands!" The knife touched Farrin's throat.

"Now yuh fecked up."

Time slowed to a crawl in Farrin's eyes. White motes of flame burned in and out around him, joined shortly by emerald sparks, and his eyes took on their clock-dial appearance. Yeah, maybe these guys would want Apogee around. He was about to beat their faces in. 

Farrin grabbed the man's arm and twisted it, then kicked him hard in the shin. Before grabbing his watch, he lifted the same leg he'd used to attack the lead thug and thrust it sideways into the thug that held Kei, launching the fecker into the alley wall. Then, he snatched the watch out of the lead's hands and pulled it free. 

"Kei, get yer back ta' a wall n' stay behind me if yuh' can!" Farrin called, thrusting his balled-up fist into the next closest thug's face.  

Whether Kei listened or not, Farrin would position himself between the support student and the bulk of the thugs. One goon's arm became something of a cannon. Another pulled a handgun out. A third summoned a chain out of the air. So, it was a mix of quirked and quirkless. That didn't change anything. He could take them. He had to.

This was bad.

Outside a hero's patrol route? Bad. Pushed in an alley? Bad. Gang leader pulling out a knife? Bad. Gang leader placing the knife against his colleague's neck? Bad bad bad bad bad.

Kei didn't like the fight that ensued as a result of their insolence. Well, Farrin's insolence, but also his own since he did decide to lie but whatever, the odds were not in their favour. While the hero student had years of training behind him, the closest Kei had to that kind of experience was lesson absorption from the hero students he's created gear for. He had no formal training. The support department didn't focus on that. It was essentially a 1 vs. however many gang members there were which was wholly unfair. They needed some kind of edge.

So while Kei stayed by the wall and behind the hero-to-be as told, he also did what any sensible citizen would do in times of trouble.

He called 110.

"Uh, hello? Hi, yeah, we're surrounded by a lot of guys who I'm pretty sure wanna kill us?" His eyes went wide when the cannon was pointed his way, and he screamed as he jumped to the side, cannonball hitting the wall where he once stood. He wheezed. "Okay they really want us dead. Can you send someone here please? We were closin' in on Above & Beyond but they pushed us in an alley." A pause, then he let out a shaky laugh. "I mean sure, I can try to stay on the line but nO PROMISES--"

He cut off his words when he fell to the floor, his ankle caught in a chain. In an instant Kei was dragged towards one of the men, and he began to try kicking at the knot with his free foot. "Farrin, little help here!"

ormally, Farrin was not quite so hot headed, but when any threat was posed to his Sada, his Mum's memory and name, his people, or his pocket watch, the far less tolerant beast within the boy was let loose. Fists flew, bones broke, and bruises were traded. Farrin was caught with a hard hit to the jaw. Despite his speed, even he couldn't dodge everything. There were simply too many thugs. For every hit he took, however, the thugs suffered some twelve or more. Two of the quirkless guys were down. A third with some sort of icicle growths on his knuckles laid beside them, unconscious. Sure, Farrin was only a student, but he was a well trained student. Leonid said it himself, "if this is where you're at right now, you're going to be something extra."

That something extra was Oberon. Farrin had seen it in sifting dreams, times where rose through bleak tides and misery, villainy and darkness, and became a true hero. Here, now, in this time, he would make it so. The cannon blasted bricks and detritus into the air. Stony dust plumed outwards, and Kei called his name. 

"On it!" He shouted, darting over to the chain and kicked it up into his hands. 

With a tug, he pulled the thug inward, then delivered a nasty kick to the crook's jaw. Kei wasn't free of the chain, but the thug collapsed. A crack echoed up and down the alley, Farrin was thrown back a step, heat pulsating out from his shoulder. He was shot. He was shot! And the suit held! 

"Holy shite! Yuh see that, lad?" He turned to Kei, pointing at his shoulder. "Outfit took a bloody bullet!" 

The distraction faded, ol' cannon are taking aim again. That was not a blow he was willing to test while actually wearing the suit. With a turn of the wrist, a semi-translucent emerald wall, about one meter by one meter in size burned into existence between Farrin and Kei and the two gunners looking at them. Both fired, but as the cannonball and the bullet passed into the field, both slowed to a snail's pace. 

"Yuh alright, lad?" Farrin called to Kei. "That wall will slow their projectiles down but we still need ta get outta the way."

As he was pulled towards one of the goons, Kei couldn't help but wonder if taking some self-defense lessons would've done him some good here. He can't keep depending on other people to bail him out. It happened in the Ikea where he relied on Zenkai to punch some monsters while he drove out on a forklift, and now he needed Farrin to free him from the chains.

Man. Imagine going through hero training just so you're not vulnerable in situations like this.

Chain guy was kicked in by the freshman, and while the links were still attached to his foot, Kei was at least not dragged around anymore. With no way to cut the chains off, he pulled them instead and held them in his arms as best as he could. "Thanks!" The gratitude was short-lived however as a shot rang in the air, and panic set in as he realized who it hit. Eyes were trained on Farrin as he looked for signs of injury but instead he was- excited? Why? Getting shot was not supposed to be a good thing!

Then he realized the guy came out unscathed, his hero outfit protecting him completely.

Kei's laugh was borderline manic as he attempted to calm down from witnessing what he thought was a death. "That's awesome! Please don't do that again though." While he was glad the armour successfully blocked a bullet as he wanted it to, he'd rather not have found that out out in the open. Tests were meant to run in a controlled environment, not in a dark alley surrounded by people not aware of the risks.

Wide eyes would turn as more shots sounded, stopping at the wall erected between them. Cannonball and bullet both were slowly closing the distance. Kei shuffled back at the display. "Uh- yeah, yeah I'm good. We should get closer to Apogee's patrol route- yes I'm still here." Because right, he was still on a call. "We're leavin' the alley now, how long until someone gets here again?" As he said this he made his way back to the main road and outside the path of the projectiles.

ever fear, Apo is here!" The words echoed through the alley. It became immediately apparent that they didn't need to move toward Apogee's patrol route because the Electric Shock Hero had found them. Standing atop the edge of one of the building's overheard, the skull-masked blond spun a rod in his hand, then aimed it toward the side of the temporal wall the goons were on. 

A small sphere of electricity shot out of the rod toward the goons and stopped between the bunch. A flash of light obscured the gunmen, leaving only the buzz of electricity running through their bodies and the sound of their spasms and spittle. None were killed, but when the light faded, their bodies dropped to the ground, unconscious. 

Apogee landed, swinging his rod into the next closest goon's gut. Meanwhile, Farrin looked to Kei, "c'mon, those projectiles are gonna move soon." But, from Apogee's rod, two electrical tethers slapped into the bullet and the cannonball. The bullet popped in place, and the cannonball lost all momentum, falling to the ground uselessly. Another swing of his rod and another of the goons crumpled onto the ground. Apo then turned to face the students. 

"And where would you be without little ol' me," Apogee teased. 

"Feckin loudmouth," Farrin muttered with a smile. 

Two more goons remained, one charging the hero and the other moving toward Kei. Farrin darted between Kei and the goon, lodging a fist into the fella's jaw. This one was tough though. He ate the blow and threw a jab of his own into Farrin gut. Pain pulsed up from the time-turner's core, but bending with the blow, Farrin thrust his head into the goon's nose, throwing him back a step. Another jab and the big fellas went down. Apogee, however, was already standing over his opponent's unconscious form. 

"Still a bit slow, time-turner," he teased again. "And should you be doing stuff like this? Back in my day, you needed a preliminary license to take action against criminals." Of course, Farrin knew the young hero didn't really care. Barty or Pinnacle would, but Apogee was of the mischievous, troublemaking sort. Still, Farrin parried. 

"They shoved us inta' the alley n' one had a knife ta' me throat. Self-defense says me. Plus, couldn't let em' lay a hand on me sham here," he gestured toward Kei, "this is Kei Hada, second year that made me' new suit. Kei, this is Apogee." 

"Nice to meet you," Apo offered Kei, "Farrin's told us about your work. You fellas sure you weren't just taking the suit out for a little field testing?" He continued to tease, wearing a smile below his mask.

As the stress of the situation mounted, Kei's patience decreased. "We're kinda out in the open and outnumbered so I don't think we got a chance to hide here." The clanking of the chains that were attached to him didn't exactly help either. He groaned. "I'm sorry, I know you're doin' your best as an operator but we need some help here-"

And help did arrive after all, in the form of an electrifying hero. Who made quick work of the projectiles and the goons in one fell swoop of his- static weapon? Was that a Quirk or a piece of gear? Either way it was crazy how fast he downed all those people.

Kei was so in awe that he didn't realize there was one more man after him. With a yell he stepped back and lifted the chains as a shield on instinct, but luckily he didn't need to know whether they would hold up as Farrin stepped in just in time. He couldn't help but grimace in sympathy over the blow the hero student had to endure, but he was glad the freshman took care of the last goon as well. All while partaking in some banter with the hero that jumped in. At least his humour was intact.

Kei personally is a little worse off mentally but if he could bounce off a monster incident in an Ikea he could bounce off this.

The sound of sirens grew louder as they closed the distance to their location, and he could hear a muffled voice. Oh right. He lifted his phone to his ear. "Hi! Yes, we're okay, sorry about the yell earlier I was caught up in somethin'-" a manic laugh escaped him. "Yes I'm sure! Apogee's here and the police are comin' so we should be good now, thank you so much. You have a good night." And just like that he hung up.

Man. Those calls were recorded right? They'd probably have a field day listening to his.

With the authorities handling the apprehension of the gang members, Kei finally turned his attention to the hero who came to their aid and waved. "Hi Apogee, thanks for savin' our hides, seriously." He let out a wheezy chuckle at the tease. "Nope, not the plan at all. The last thing I wanted was to test a bullet on his suit out here. I'm just glad it held up! Speakin' of-" Worry took on his features as he looked to Farrin. "I gotta thank you too. You okay? Those guys really did a number on ya."

ere, make yourself useful," Apo said to Farrin after the initial introductions, throwing him some handcuffs. As he and Farrin began cuffing the battered crooks, Apo would continue with Kei, "Think nothing of it. A hero's job and all that. And good to hear. I heard Barty set up one of the training facilities with quite a few of our modified villain bots, various elemental launchers, and such, but you didn't hear that from me," he chuckled. 

Farrin flipped another of the goons over with his foot, then leaned down to cuff his hands behind his back. They were unconscious, but nobody needed one of the angry bastards to wake up and cause more trouble. Farrin smirked with Kei's thanks. He was a good lad. Farrin's hot temper when it came to his watch might have put him in danger, and yet he was still thanking Farrin, though truth be told, it was looking like they would have to fight regardless. The head honcho had had that knife to Farrin's throat. Farrin was fast, not stone-skinned. 

"No need ta' thank me, bud. Like Apo said, it's a hero's job. N' I'll be okay. Been beat up worse than this before." 

It was a small tell. Perhaps the slightest, vaguest hint at Farrin's experiences back home. Yeah, getting jumped was nothing new to him at this point. Factor in years of training and the myriad experiences he was having outside of UAU's walls now, and these nightly brawls were quickly becoming old hat, not that he would mention as much. 

"I'm just glad yer no' too hurt," he said, pausing for a moment before continuing, "n' that yer suit held up so well. Deflectin' a feckin' bullet. That's feckin' deadly. Absolute aces."

A few more upgrades, and who knew what he would be tanking next? Before, his outfit was mostly for show. It could deflect a few light slashes from knives, but a bullet? Kei had nailed it; two for two now! Between the linear cannons and the hero suit, Farrin would soon have all his bases covered - and it was Kei's brilliant brain that was getting him there.
