Laoro's jaw tensed with a click, closing his maw with a bite. Whereas his steps continued down the path, his mind paced back through the night's events leading him to this moment, considering when, where, and how he managed something so stupid. He recalled preparing for dinner — his dinner, his mother's breakfast — setting the table, and even taking the first bites out of his plate. What had it tasted like? He couldn't recall; the phone buzzing in his pocket had disturbed him, and with it, took the memory of what he'd been eating to begin with.

A voice on the phone — another buddy from an old dockworking job — told him of some impromptu job, a robbery-type deal. The man on the other end admitted his own reluctance to participate, particularly citing the abrupt manner with which the offer sprung through the underworld, but given his and Laoro's past work together, he figured the Venetian might have some interest.

He remembered how his eyes flicked to the time. Cutting it close, he could manage that — but time for patience? He didn't even have the time to clear the spray cans, artbook, and other such items from his bag before throwing it over his shoulder; but what he carried in it now — what he had thought he made told to not sleep in his backpack — was none such objects. No, it was a living thing, a small, black and white, little thing.

The bag's zipper was constructed in such a way that, on the interior, there was another pull tab, so as to make certain angles easier to manage. However now, sticking a little claw through the zipper's indent, the round face of an animal peaked through. What wondered at the glittering man, whose light flickered in the reflection of the returned gaze, was a panda.

"Look," Laoro grimaced, "it's... this guy's his own story." He sighed. As he continued to step along, he'd reach his hands back to close the zipper, gently pushing him back inside. "But more to the point, I keep my bag on the floor, and he likes napping in it sometimes. I just didn't think he'd be napping in it tonight when the call came in. And I mean, why should I have? It's ridiculous enough that he likes the bag to begin with, but it's even weirder that he goes out of his way to take everything out just so he can."

Laoro stuttered to a halt as he, alongside his companion — now "companions," plural — was faced with another trio; an actual trio of supposedly capable duos, as opposed to himself, Peacock, and a literal baby panda, and they wanted their cut of the deal. That is, the circus duo's.

Laoro tightened the backpack's straps.

"Hey, Peacock?" He squatted down, placing his hands on his knees. He didn't seem relaxed, however — rather, his legs were tensed, tension curling through them as they tightened. "I dunno how good of a fighter you are or if that glitter's any useful in a fight — and I don't prefer to ask for a truce — but if you're gonna do something," the hoodie's stray strings, accumulated especially along where the sleeves used to go past his elbows, clung to his form as a spark ran through him, "try not to get in my way."

As Laoro shot up from the floor, a charge of electricity would flicker from beneath the soles of his feet. Combined with the tension freed from his legs as he leaped forward, he cracked the ground from beneath him as he diagonally hurled toward the ceiling. There, with his hands pushing off the top and another charge dissipating from his hands, he descended upon the shotgun-wielding brother with the aim to stomp down the middle of his face.

From the stomp, he would push himself off further down the path, putting some distance between himself and the trio — and, furthermore, surrounding them by placing himself as the opposite pillar to the King of Hearts, who now had the full room to play.

Amongst those appropriating the King of Heart's hoard, so, too, did it include the man's very same companion. Indeed, as he dashed forward further into the depths, snatching up goods with ravenous eyes, Laoro openly laughed as he plunged his hands into the slithering tendrils of glitter. The bag along his back — large and cylindrical like a duffel bag, but opening at the top like a backpack — held tightly to his frame, and its top remained unzipped towards his head. In his haste, Laora simply kept tossing the items into the open slit he left; he doubted the equipment to be particularly fragile.

"Clearly," he laughed, "you've never thought about compressed air, lady." As he shoved more and more into his sack, he twisted back to the few other criminals worth chatting up. They had, after all, the intention to speak before, so surely they would have the same withstanding as things went on. "I had this one surfer buddy before; he always got sand in his car, so he used compressed air to blow the dust out — I don't imagine the glitter's any different, ey, Peacock?"

Who, speaking of the devil, Callisto turned to face, jogging backward as he did.

"And seriously, no bag? How are you planning to take everything you're getting in your dust? Are you gonna just have a giant, fuck-off ball of glitter? Cuz you're not getting all of it with those pockets, I'll tell you now, and I won't be giving you anything I keep in my bag—"

As he reached back to slip another item into his bag, he fumbled it; however, something reached out from the bag, nabbing it with a pair of little, stubby paws, before pulling it into the bag with the rest of the man's storage. He paused his hand, which had now been disarmed, before reaching in himself.

Without a word, Laoro loosened his bag and pulled it around his shoulder. Where he had freed the zipper, he snuck a look into it, narrowing his gaze as he peered into what should have consisted of varying medical supplies and technology. But, as he pulled his face away from his sack, his eye twitched.

Again wordlessly, he slung the bag over his shoulder. He tightened the straps harder than before.

"...Hm. So," he inhaled, "if any of you guys are gonna try to kill and betray me for my haul — and I know this is gonna sound so god damn stupid — but can you please do it from the front? Assuming, you know, you do choose that, in which I hope you don't."

A last-minute raid, as the name might apply, was no operation of deliberation; Laoro figured, as sudden as the call came at the time it had, it wouldn't be a job for networking, let alone for anything beyond a need-to-know basis. It could have easily been a trap — he imagined it may still be — but in the masses of those he now ranked among, he trusted himself to, at the very least, be faster than the slowest. Moreover, in the company of tonight's disco bell, even he, with his gilded mask of cobalt brilliance, wouldn't stand out enough to be the main target, let alone the first attempted capture.

"No use asking questions, see?" He rolled over onto his stomach. Beneath him, like the swirling pool of an hourglass falling down into the lower half, the sparkling cube pooled around Laoro a momentary bed for his late-night accompaniment. "But, if the loot's worth the trouble, I don't see the need for trust."

And so, the clock ticked down. His seat, his sort of sandpit, tilted him forward, following the count and the uprighting of its creator. He sunk there for a moment, groaning a silent sound for himself, before grabbing the ledge at his chin and lunging forward, launching himself off the cube's top and onto the floor just ahead of it, landing in a squat.

"Sure." He sprung up to his height, stretching his arms over his head, one hand wrapping around the other's wrist. "Just make sure to be intentionally distracting, big guy."

He took off with the crowd, sticking close to his glittering companion while trailing behind the greater, arriving upon their target for tonight's heist; he'd heard its name before. Yizoy, yes, he knew of it — it was a medical facility, from what he could recall. Not a hospital, but a business on the cutting edge of developing medical technology. The value of their goods, beyond their practical application, could only be astronomically exorbitant.

Following the breach, Laoro charged through the opening. With the organizer departing, alongside their vanguard, into the depths of their own objective, the Venetian charged straight ahead, keeping close by his newly acquired comrade — perhaps an accomplice, yet to be trusted as something so dear — though he widened his gait in the effort to keep himself just a bit ahead.

"C'mon, birdman!" His mask rose at either corner of his eyes. "Actually keep pace, don't just wait around! I didn't promise I'd share if I get more."

Callisto's hand tucked into his opposite forearm, squarely keeping his arms crossed his chest. The morning breeze still passed by them, ruffling and swaying his jacket as it moved down along the path, away from the temple and back towards the gate. The city still sat there, open to whoever chose to walk back out and into its urbanity; though it bordered the place on all sides, with those inside seeing well into the metropolis surrounding them, it was the gate that stood open for them.

There were so many more people in the city, after all. But here, in this place, the numbers didn't need to be compared. The world was smaller here, if for maybe just the moment, without the need to be anything more; one of a few, as opposed to one of many.

"Dunno if that's what I'd call family," he scoffed, a laugh passing along the wave of his voice, "but enjoy it, regardless of what you choose to call it. Don't let me tell you what it is and what it isn't."

He'd pat Shion on the shoulder, stepping away from him and closer towards the lines. His opposite hand slinked into his pant pocket.

"But no, I think I'm good." He'd pull his hand over, petting Toto just a bit more as he continued. "I've got some prayers in mind, and I'd rather not hold you up if you're hungry. I mean, you did just drop in on me, so it's not like you necessarily came here to pray, right?" He pulled his hand away. "Oh, and I don't want to waste my money on food. Not now, anyway."

Callisto turned to leave, offering a wave over his shoulder. The winds pushed against him and through his hoodie as he moved away from the entrance. "Name's Cal, by the way." He grinned. "I'll see you around."

The man dragged a hand across the cube, leaning himself along the ledge as his arm swept across the surface. Even now, as he watched the sifting particles, his eyes recoiled to shrink, yet, at the same time, the man forced his eyes wide for the glittering sights before him. Dotting through his eyes came through the light, swirling like the inside of a storm cloud as the flakes cascaded along his wrapped arm.

He rested along his chest and stomach, crossing his arms along the opposite edge and resting his chin upon them. His legs dangled from the opposite end before curling up and inwards, folding them as to better fit himself. The glitter traced beneath his weight, like constantly shifting sands, as he lay there, humming along to the tone.

"Pretty sure there's a difference between a distraction and a target," he mused airily. "And I'd rather keep my neck out of the chain tonight, thanks; I wanna make good time on this." As to what kind of chains, though, he wouldn't say. Instead, he would simply laze across the cube made for him to sit, offering an extended gaze up to the King of Hearts.

"But sure, Mister Peacock." The edges of his eyes creased with the shape of his smile. "I'll stick with you, so long as you know what voice to keep with me. And later, maybe another time, I'll see what other seats you have open."

"Or, at the very least," he'd roll over on the cube, shifting the sands to his back and hanging his legs down the length. "I won't be freaking out over whatever that other guy's got going on."

The figure cupped a hand over his cheek, shouting over to the voice he heard. As he did, he propped himself up on his elbows, craning his neck up and from the cube in his efforts. "You already heard the offer to leave, man! Don't like the deal, then don't take it; don't think any of us want a guy who's gonna get in the way!"

A hand traced over a shoulder, etching the tips of its fingers over the outer contour while the thumb kneaded just above the collarbone at the softer tissue. Past the ashen hood pulled up and over, decorated in cyan-blue swirls set to blazing patterns that yet tore at the elbows, and past the white undershirt leaving his arms untouched, the hand rubbed along. Its nails were fine, filed down into neat curves moving along their shape, and the veins traced prominently along the back, quietly pulsing as it rubbed against its shoulder; the knuckles were hidden beneath wraps that traced all the way up his exposed forearm, marking their end as they met the joint, yet the actual fingers remained bare.

The figure stepped into the warehouse, pressing one flat to the floor after the other. With the opposite, free hand resting in his pocket, he strode through the place toward a place he found free. Albeit, however, at the side of another, who arose in a flurry of sparkles and light as they took the seat of their newly-anointed throne. The figure, from beneath their mask, winced at the illumination suddenly poured onto him, even lifting their hand from their pocket to shield himself.

As the king's light cascaded onto the figure, their illumination lit up the figure's own mask, dazzling and dotting the specks of his Colombina mask. Blue and golden spots reflected back to the king as the figure lowered their hand, squinting through the radiance and the harsher shadows cutting from it, and their gaiter mask ate at what fell on it.

"Shit," he groaned, "did you miss the 'night' part?" As he dropped the hand to his side, the man yawned, though his mouth remained hidden behind his choice of dress. "I rolled out of bed for work, not a light show, y'know..."

With one hand still on his neck and the other left to roam, the latter brushed up against the throne, dragging his index across the armrest and gathering the sparkle along his fingertip. Dancing in his eyes, the blue of his iris disappeared in the depths of the scarlet, cascading and falling over his color as he brought it closer to his sight; he gently ground it between his index and his thumb, watching the gleam as it became more and more dust — more than it already was, anyway.

Callisto's eyes fell on the effeminate man. That cool blue stare of his, having its fill of watching the bustling crowds and the flapping of their lips, now drifted back to Shion. The gleam in his sight flicked about Shion; from the tentative tremble of his lips, the quick shifting of his gaze, the clouded words he exhaled, and the lack of ground he plunged himself into, Callisto's stare beamed with frost.

"Hmm," Callisto hummed aloud. Now with the creature settled, the Venetian crossed his arms over his chest, with one propping up the other as he scratched his chin. His face was clean-shaven, devoid of peach fuzz or anything resembling it; the hair atop his head was more than enough. "If I was forced to put something at the top of my list, then..."

The man's index extended up from his scratching hand, massaging against his cheek as he pressed it inward. "It'd be family. When it all comes down to it, when the day's over and everything's said and done, that's what I'd choose." His hand slipped away from his face, resting against its opposite arm and remaining seated at his chest.

"Sometimes, plans just fall through; bad breakups, jobs that don't go anywhere, places that don't turn out so great — having nowhere to go?" He'd chuckle. "I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy."

The thought dripped down on him. Haggard in the world's howling storm, seeing nothing about shadows amongst the rain and ashen clouds — nothing like it compared. Standing there, amongst the black, soaked in the notion with no warmth in sight to chase was no dream. No, it was just cold. Unyieldingly, unflinchingly, cold.

Laoro's foot held his foot aloft. In between his bloodied sole and the mess from which it dripped of, the alien creature coiled around its progenitor's skull. Only his head was protected, and in those eyes looking back upon him, Laoro stilled. The rest of the witch's body was barren of shields. An exposed chest, a pair of wimpy arms, and a set of legs still intact. They didn't bleed. Not like the fountain coming from between the temples.

Laoro rested his foot again as his balance. He panted as he lowered it to the pavement — the unoccupied pavement — pressing it again on solid ground. The crowd watched on, some still recording the scene as it played. Laoro's bag swung from his back. Though it was designed for two straps, one had long since frayed before even this encounter, leaving it to hang loosely from the criminal's shoulder. Now that Laoro steadied, however, with his breath returning to a human's rhythm, so too did the bag.

The criminal adjusted the strap, tightening it, as he looked upon the crowd. From deep within the shadows of his mask, hidden away by the glittering gold that hid his features, storms hissed at the bystanders. His gaze twisted towards them, following their inching movements. Some stepped away from the scene, others trembled, and a greater more froze outright.

Laoro's gaze wandered about the crowd. The air in their lungs caught as his gaze choked them.

"At least," his voice came, scalding in its exhaust, "the kid fought."

With a hiss underneath his crouch and the blur of his outline, Laoro disappeared. None amongst the crowd witnessed where he'd gone, and none of their eyes caught wind of where he might have been. Amongst them, Mr. Yamada sulked. The tubby man's fists balled at his sides, and as blood continued to trickle from the youth, he screamed at the sky.

Callisto dragged his feet along. The blood beneath his shoe dried, cracking and flaking as he walked along. The alleyway, coming from the rooftop he'd left to, carried the voices to him as a murmur. Tokyo's screams were louder, but here, in this place, Callisto could hear the hushed calls.

"Damn brat." Pulling the mask from his face, Callisto dropped the hood to his shoulders. His prickly hairs stood again, matted and disheveled. With one hand moving after the other, the man pulled the ties from his hair, letting it all fall down his shoulders and his back. "Had to do all that for a guy with a broomstick?" he sneered. His hair fell on the loose bag at his back.

Callisto couldn't have imagined another path towards victory. Both Toto and Shion had him beat at regular speed; where he could only keep up in short bursts, they could individually outpace him. To face them both simultaneously, however, would be a feat even further more complicated. For his limited resources, Callisto could only regard them with the utmost gravity he could muster. He couldn't lose here. He couldn't go out like this.

And with the grace of luck falling on his side, Callisto wouldn't. As he slammed Shion's skull into the pavement, his foot crunching the skull into the pavement and shocking Shion again, Laoro was convinced. He knew what he had to do. It would never be what he wanted to do — it never was when it went so far; there wasn't a purpose in that kind of fight. But this wasn't about purpose; Callisto had his side, and Shion had his. When it came down to it, Callisto knew where he belonged, and who he belonged with, but wouldn't accept the place behind bars.

Callisto's foot lifted from Shion's face. As the magnetic pull again lifted Shion from the ground, the criminal's foot would crash down on the student's skull. Again and again, like a cascading waterfall, he would deliver stomp after stomp — as many as he could manage — and plunge his weight behind every blow.

Many onlookers gasped, screamed even, as they watched the display of violence. Some held phones and recorded what played out before them, adding this scene to the growing traffic of Babel's reign on Tokyo. Regardless of the cameras that fell on him, and no matter how this identity was seen, Laoro buried his foot into the student's face. He didn't want to do this any longer than he had to. He didn't want to be part of this circus, of this side-show attraction, beyond what he had to.

Callisto nodded along. His eyes drifted away as Shion continued on, peering off into the distance while absentmindedly petting the creature still cradled in his arms. People kept lining up at the shrine through the gate, with a narrow few even acknowledging the pair at all, as they continued to march on to their prayers. His watch followed their steps.

"It's a bit harder to digest with friends, I guess." Though he remained fixated on the crowd, Callisto still spoke to the younger man. "You get attached to them, wanna bend the rules for them — but I mean, it's sort of weird, isn't it?" Callisto crossed his other arm over his chest, wrapping around the friend like a bowl. His other hand would also begin scratching the creature. "Like, when you think about it, couldn't the same go for anyone?"

His hands reached beneath Toto, trying to lift him up and leave him strung over his arms. He tilted his head as he looked at the creature in its many, many eyes, peering into the snake-like creature's gaze. "If a friend goes bad, it's weird. But for someone you don't know, they're just 'bad,' wholesale. You don't need to think about stopping them, right?"

"You don't let them go." He'd lean in towards Toto, peering closer into its eyes. "I bet their friends would probably bend the rules if they had to stop them, though — if they were in that position, that's what I'd bet."

"Real weird, ain't it?" Pulling his face away from the animal, he'd hold Toto up towards Shion, returning it to its owner. "What's the actual difference between them, you think? Not just that they're unknown — I mean the real reason we wanna let our friends get away with things."
