"At times," Mai shrugged, her voice still hoarse as she blinked tears out of her eyes. While she usually operated in the Edogawa district she strived to improve cohesion and cooperation amongst agencies, part of which she took up personally by covering for other heroes when something came up that made them unable to make their scheduled patrols or when certain areas risked being without heroes for too long. San'ya never seemed to have enough personnel. Even if she moved here full time Mai doubted she'd be able to keep up with its needs, not by herself.
"I'm in heroics," she responded with a small smile in a tone that was almost bashful. Like she wasn't sure whether she was deserving of the title of 'Pro Hero'. "One of my colleagues recommended me this place to relax and unwind for a while."
She wasn't sure why said colleague, or more likely Tamaya through a proxy, had wanted her to come to this bar specifically but barring the intense pain in her throat she could sort of see the appeal. Actually now that she thought of it the mystery shots might be exactly why Tamaya had wanted her to step out of her comfort zone and come here. She'd been had.
"Oh! Thank you for the advice," Mai said after clearing her throat. That was dangerous. The burning feeling had almost caused her to forget to keep track of her alcohol consumption. Given that she was five foot tall in heels her tolerance still wasn't the best despite how often she went for drinks after-work with colleagues from all over Tokyo to better foster relations. "I'll, uh, I'll have the marinated shrimp please. Ah, baseball is fine. I'm no expert but I do watch at times."
Taking slow sips of her second Fluffy Dream she kept the drink in her mouth as much to numb the burning sensation as to enjoy the taste.
"If, uh, I might inquire. What exactly does the 'Whatever Zane likes' include?"

Fists of fire met a chilling reception. When the criminal's fight or flight respond defaulted to the aggressive option Yuki Onna was ready for it, her quirk intensifying in order to allow her to withstand the heat long enough to counter. A parry swung him out of balance and a palm strike to the chin put him out of action before he could recover. He toppled in the exact direction Mai had intended causing him to crash onto an armchair like a tired salaryman after a long day.
A scarf flew out before he'd even landed, wrapping around the arms and torso of one of his compatriots. With a tug Yuki Onna pulled the man in front of another aggressor, kicked off the coffee table and used her other leg to slam the pair up against the wall. Her eyes briefly flicked towards the man that had been hit by the stunner. Still down, good. The other two seemed hesitant to get up as well.
"I suppose you did," Mai responded with an unimpressed look at the criminals. The crooks had the initiative and bodged it so badly after their first attempt at scaring the police off that it'd been utterly lost. The fact that they'd never managed to recover it nor even adapt to losing it spoke greatly to their capabilities. For all their crimes these people were unused to facing physical retaliation. Giving an appreciative nod to the nearest officer while unwrapping her scarf from one of the crooks Mai took a moment to recall the briefing before standing back up.
"Allow me to accompany you." That was the perfect opportunity to alleviate her earlier blunder. Mai had been far harsher than she'd intended to be and there was only so much that stress and adrenaline could justify. One had to control their emotions, not be controlled by them. She was ashamed to say that she'd failed in that earlier. With the action over her mind was clearer now however and much less likely to stumble over her words. Wait, would the officer take it as an insult to her competence that she insisted on accompanying her?
"Better to move in pairs until we're sure the area is clear." A fact that the officer surely knew as well. Mai wished the ground would open and swallow her. "Apologies, I don't think we've been introduced. My name is Shirayuki Mai, or Yuki Onna on the job. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
She only briefly turned towards Dani as she introduced herself and listened to the officer's reply, her eyes quickly returning to scanning the perimeter in case there were any gang members still lurking around.

The villain's eyes went wide and lost their shine, mouth opening from the impact to the back of their neck just before they crumpled. It was a sad turn of events but not an unexpected one. With a melancholic look in her eyes Mai ceased all usage of her quirk. It was over. The danger had been contained. Pulling out her phone Mai contacted the local law enforcement while pinging her location.
"This is Yuki Onna. Confirming capture of the phantom thief Mirage." Well, half of them it seemed. After the grievous wounds inflicted to one they'd presumed was Mirage by a private security firm that had worked in tandem with the first responder they'd presumed Mirage to be permanently done. Given that the man's life was hanging in the balance and that he was still in a coma almost a month after the fact they hadn't been able to question him, there was no way of knowing that Mirage had been a two person team. This then confirmed that the stolen items from the most recent theft hadn't been hidden prior to that but had instead been taken by the woman they just captured.
"Let's get out of the rain." Binding her scarves around the captured foe with a few practiced motions after quickly confirming her wellbeing Yuki Onna took the captive from Helsing and made her way to the nearest overhang. With the villain accounted for they had several minutes before the police could arrive and formally arrest Mirage. It seemed almost symbolical that the rain was slowly winding down. The reign of the phantom thief that struck on rainy days was drawing to a close. It should have felt like a job well done. Instead it tasted like ash in her mouth.
"The phantom thief Mirage has been- No, the phantom thieves Mirage have been active in Shinjuku, Chiyoda and Minato for the past three years. The only reasons we know it was the same person- people each time was that they always struck on rainy days and left behind a calling card. " Yuki Onna began to explain while they waited. "During this time they've robbed museums, jewelers and private art collections. It was during an attempt on the latter that they made a mistake. The collector had taken countermeasures and hired a private security firm to assist in guarding their collection. The exact methods used are still under investigation but by the time the first Pro Hero arrived on the scene the other half of Mirage was no longer responsive."
It was a regrettable turn of events. While Mai certainly did not believe their crimes should continue they did not deserve anything near death. Especially given the... questionable methods of acquisition employed by the 'original' owners of the items they stole. In truth Mai doubted the full scale of Mirage's crimes would ever be known, for it was likely that the vast majority of their targets did not wish to risk involving the law.
"It is good that we were able to capture her, many questions remain." Turning to face Enma the slightest hint of a soft smile crested Mai's features. "You've done well all around. From your kindness in assisting the old lady crossing the street to your professionalism, intuition and restraint both during the patrol and our encounter with Mirage you have shown all the qualities to make an excellent Pro Hero. Hone those skills and do not forget why you fight, Helsing. I'll put forth a stellar review when we return."

Mai felt profoundly silly when she realized that the group she'd just told to freeze were all plainclothes officers. A short channel of her quirk through her cheeks chilled them enough to hide all evidence of embarasment in advance. That only left the matter of how she should reply.
"So you say, yet I see precious little 'movement' left that would require an immediate intervention."
Well, that wasn't what she'd meant to say at all. Swallowing as she scanned the scene Mai considered how to best salvage the situation. With her back straight and an almost regal demeanor she walked towards the door Dani had just fired through. Perhaps a joke could deflect the tension.
"Then again, mayhaps your team is so skilled as to be entirely at ease amidst an ongoing crisis."
Shit.
That didn't come out as intended. Why was she so flustered? It didn't matter, Mai told herself. Actions said more than a thousand words, she'd just need to show that she was genuinely here to help.
"I'll take the fore, cover me," Mai said while making eye contact with each of the officers, lingering just slightly longer on the one that had spoken up before she looked towards the opening and raised her voice. "This is Yuki Onna, surrender now and you will not be harmed."
She waited approximately half a second for a reply before dashing forward and kicking off the side of the door to diagonally enter the room with completely inverted momentum. Seeing one of the criminals be about to light up the room Mai rushed towards him and aimed a feint at his chin, the palm strike aborting early while she channeled her quirk through her arm to chill the air directly around it. Should he attempt to attack in any way she'd channel her quirk further to try and cancel out the heat as well. Her ears stayed peeled for any other trouble. She had full faith in the police of course but one never knew when unexpected disaster would strike.

"Stop?" The voice laughed manically. "You want me to what, surrender? Alright, I will. I'll surrender on one condition. Give me back my brother. Tell me, dog, can you bring back the dead?!" As her words gained heat the assailant lost focus on their quirk, becoming so unbalanced that the illusion dropped several times, flashes of corporeality in between the invisibility revealing her true appearance. "Stop? Stop? Now you dogs want to stop? You think you have the luxury to stop? You people cut down my brother like a god damn animal and now you want to stop?! No one stops! It's way too late to stop! No one... STOOOOPS!!!"Despite how unbalanced the villain was her guard stayed up the entire time she was talking, ready to retaliate the moment either Helsing or Yuki Onna made a move. What was perhaps the most telling was her eyes. Despite the genuine feeling in her words they never ceased taking stock of the situation and scanning for escape routes. The woman was far from a frenzied berserker. Even so she'd made a lapse in judgement. She'd wanted to be heard. With noise no longer being hindered Yuki Onna had fully heard Helsing's words as well.The rain intensified again right after and communication was cut off once more making any further planning impossible. That left Mai with very few choices. Either she went along with Helsing's suggestion or acted independently and hoped he would catch on and cooperate with her idea. It was unfortunately unlikely that such smooth cooperation would happen given their lack of familiarity with each other, that was far too dangerous of an assumption to make. The former it was. Besides, there was no time to think of the 'best possible way', all they could do was go with something they thought would work and follow it through to its conclusion. Hesitation, no matter whether it was due to fear or aiming for perfection, could only lead to failure when it was time to act.Without further ado Mai channeled her quirk full blast from her entire body, a move that in combination with the intensified falling rain covered the area half a meter around her in a literal white haze as the rain instantly chilled to below freezing and formed an icy fog. It obscured her own vision as much as it would that of anyone else trying to look at her but it'd suffice for now. So long as she acted predictably her opponent's moves would be easy to predict as well. Zig zagging as she ran Mai rushed towards the last known location of their opponent. Using her quirk like this robbed her of the utility of her scarves and put her on one hell of a timer, especially in cold weather like this, but with some luck it'd be worth it. Right before she reached the outer bounds of the opponent's expected range Mai stopped channeling her quirk and dashed sideways. Seeing through the illusion while covered in a haze was impossible but with regained clarity and an unexpected movement that caused a reaction Yuki Onna spotted the new location of the disturbance in the air.Altering her course Mai extended both of her arms forward Mai channeled her quirk once more, this time solely through her hands. Mai went over what little she knew of the targets and locale as she ran. There was little else she could do while making her way to the scene, seconds seeming to stretch due to the uncertainty and ignorance as to what was going on. Mission control had yet to provide her with any more info so she could little but guess. Each scenario that went through her head was worse than the last. She had to hurry.
As she neared a corner Mai flung one of her scarves to loop around a utility pool while she ran full speed for a wall, briefly running parallel to it before taking several steps diagonally across its surface to gain a bit of height and kicking off the wall's corner. Using the utility pole as a fulcrum the fabric of her scarf went tight and swung her over the traffic of the busy street she knew in advance would be there.
Briefly letting go to give the scarf a bit of slack she untied it with a flick of her wrist, altering her momentum enough to go over the remainder of the street and land in a roll. It was hell on her knees and not something she'd normally do but necessity triumphed over care. She'd much rather be sore tomorrow than too late today.
Rushing up the stairs Mai cursed the shortness of her legs. She'd be out of breath by the time she made it up to the apartment in question. Floors flew by one by one, her eyes briefly flicking to the signs to make sure she didn't overshoot. When she finally made it to the floor in question and heard the commotion Mai slammed the door of the stairwell open, finally getting a look at the hallway where Dani nearly had a door kicked into her face.
"This is Yuki Onna! Everybody freeze!"

Turning her head away as if she were scanning the area Mai channeled a bit of her quirk through her cheeks to stop them from flushing at Lawbringer's compliment. That had been highly unexpected. She had heard that the French tended to be more open with their feelings but experiencing it for herself was entirely different from second hand knowledge.
His thoughts on the city were relieving in a way. Compared to her Max likely had a better idea of how cities usually were. While she herself was certainly more familiar with Tokyo she didn't have the frame of reference to compare the current feel of the city to that of others. Certainly, she'd been to Saitama and even Yokohama but her forays outside of the Kanto region were far and few in between. Only through this conversation now was she coming to the realization that she lacked an outside perspective.
"Excellent." Mai accidentally replied in the same fashion as his earlier response. "With the ongoing increased workload that may be quite a while." She'd interpreted his statement on staying 'as long as people wanted him around' charitably. Fitting into foreign cultures could be quite rough, yes, if his words carried any other meaning than dealing with that which the local Pros were too occupied to take on until they got a handle on it Mai deemed that to be the most likely one. She could only hope Lawbringer adjusted before he ruffled feathers. Tokyo could use all the help it could get.
At his next question Mai got a distant look in her eyes.
"It shames me to admit but for the most worrisome incidents as of late there was little warning. Only frantic stretches of having to react to what came our way followed by fruitless attempts to get answers." The thought burned and giving it voice made her jaw tighten and a pit form in her stomach. Letting out a long breath through her nose that was almost a sigh Mai continued. "For the smaller ones it is often the crowd that gives it away. As I'm sure you're aware, whether or not people realize anything is off intuition oft subconsciously warns them. As a result changes in body language of the people near someone that is up to something tend to create a motion akin to ripples in a pond when it comes to crowd behavior. This is especially true here. As citizens of Japan we always attempt to ensure smooth proceedings, acting according to predictable, agreed upon norms so that everyone knows what to expect. Familiarizing oneself with how large groups of people act in certain areas as a result and then picking up on anomalies in this expected behavior can assist one in acting to stop or even prevent crime with seemingly preternatural speed."
It was part of what made the adjustment to working in Japan so difficult for foreigners, especially ones such a Pro Heroes that were expected to act fast and correctly. Ignorance to the ways everyone carried themselves could easily cause confusion when one attempted to assist in a way outside of what the panicked mind could predict, something that made it far more likely for something to go wrong.
Mai had oft pondered that it was for this reason that Pro Hero culture had taken a bigger hold in Japan than in other countries, for a departure from the norm as big as violent attacks and quirk-related calamities required something similarly divergent from it so as to not cause an uncanny dissonance. A clear separation between the normal and the 'other' was required for the sake of clarity. Flashy outfits and outspoken personas, neither of which would be accepted in the normal flow of society, suited that perfectly. Anything less would be a half-measure. It was the exact reason Mai carried herself as larger than life whenever she was out in the field regardless of her small stature. The people needed a beacon of hope whenever despair risked setting in and Mai was content to do her part in providing it.

The assailant remained invisible but there was a noticeable person shaped gap in the wave of dirt and debris. A muffled "Ugh, it's all over me! I hate mud!" rang out as they began to complain, their distorted voice making it sound like they were underwater. "Aww… Why couldn’t you two just be good little murderous dogs of the law and take each other out like you do to us?"
Mai too noticed the oddity visible -or perhaps invisble would be a better description- within the thrown up dirt. It could be another ruse but she used non-lethal tactics for exactly that reason. While her scarf still whipped through the empty space without meeting resistance just as it happened when she struck the elemental this time there was a different kind of feedback. More ripples in the puddles. These were more visible than the ones before and kicked up far more droplets. The assailant had clearly rushed to dodge in response to both her own efforts and those of Enma. For a second or two a haze appeared in the air, roughly half a meter taller than the average person and just as much wider. The height decreased to slightly below average but the width stayed the same as the wobbly androgynous voice rang out once more.
"The hard way it is. I really don’t like that. Getting blood out of these clothes is so difficult. This is on you for getting them dirty already, that made the choice between fight or flight much easier."
The haze vanished, leaving nothing but air in its place once more. On closer look one could see the same area that had been hazy was suspiciously clear of falling rain, yet this too was somewhat obscured by the rain falling in all directions around the transparent figure. Should Enma approach he’d have nought but his instincts to rely on to respond to the figure’s attack, one that would strike the moment he got with six feet of them and if it hit would strike his sternum like the tip of a sheathed sword with enough force to knock the breath out of his lungs.

Mai always preferred to get an idea of the atmosphere in any place she'd be operating first hand. It was exactly why she eschewed traveling by car unless necessary, much preferring to simply employ the city's reliable public transportation to get around and walking from the nearest train station to her destination. Punctuality too was something she valued greatly and a standard to which she held herself to at all times, making sure to arrive anywhere no sooner than thirty minutes in advance and no later than fifteen minutes in advance.
Today was closer to the latter than the former. Paperwork had been piling up and Mai was ashamed to admit she'd let it cut into her sleep. She wasn't usually one to rely on outside sources to fuel her mind but given that there may be long periods of waiting to get the legal details sorted out after the operation she'd picked up a coffee on the way.
Black with two cubes of sugar and no milk. A bit sweet for her usual tastes but she was attempting to broaden her perspectives. That and she had a long day ahead of her yet. A melodic tone from her pocket caused her to switch the cup over to her other hand and pick up the phone.
Her walk turned into a jog and then a run, the coffee downed while she channeled her quirk through her lips to cool it down sufficiently to chug. With the cup tossed into the nearest trash receptacle Mai cut through an alley to get to the scene faster.
"I'm heading in as well. The briefing shall have to wait until the post-op report. Yuki Onna out."
She'd already read said briefing of course, twice even, but it was always good to go over matters with the other party again to ensure everyone was on the same line whenever possible. Shifting into her hero outfit Mai transferred the phone into one of the pockets within its inner lining in case there were any crucial updates before focusing entirely on getting to the scene. With a run up she placed one foot against the wall and then another before kicking off and leaping over a fence, the shortcut she was now taking having been planned out in advance just in case of situations like this. Train rides weren't instant after all and Mai tended to use the time to prepare as many contingencies as possible.
That had cut at least half a minute off her travel time. At her current pace she should be able to reach the building in question within a minute or two at most. Mai could only hope she'd arrive before anything went wrong.

"T-thank you," Mai responded with a nod. She was far too nervous simply due to being out of her element. If she were here on the job she'd be the picture of confidence but right now-
Yeah, far less so.
"I'm fine, thank you." She only narrowly refrained from physically cringing. Six words further into the conversation and she'd already repeated the same reply twice. "How about you?" Was that the wrong thing to ask back to a bartender? Mai assumed it was common courtesy here just like anywhere else but her bar etiquette was sorely lacking. "Sort of. My job takes me through this general vicinity at times but I have yet to have the time to visit any establishments. A colleague of mine recommended this place. Ah, where are my manners. Shirayuki Mai, a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
Was she rambling? She was. She absolutely was. The bartender was likely only listening out of politeness too. Oh kami she was leaving a horrible impression. That wouldn't do. She had to be someone that people could put their trust into. It was crucial.
With a grateful nod Mai accepted the Fluffy Dream and took a sip. Her eyes closed for a second as she savored it. A satisfied sigh followed. It was a bit sweeter than her usual preferences but it made it work. Yes, perhaps this was just what she needed. By the time she opened her eyes again the final touches were being put on the mystery shot. Was that mayonnaise? How creative.
Blushing a little at Hoshi's kind offer for her to not drink it Mai felt ashamed. She truly hadn't left the best impression, had she? That wouldn't do. She had to show that she could handle whatever the world may throw at her and stand as a bastion of security in this increasingly dangerous world. Her shot went down at the same time as Hoshi's did.
Mai died a little.
The taste hadn't hit instantly but when it did her mouth felt like it was on fire. She couldn't show weakness now, not after she'd sworn to herself to stand tall. Keeping her face as even as possible Mai took a deep breath. The air agitated her throat and her vision went blurry, the deadpan expression staying on her face even as she blinked the moisture out of her eyes. She wasn't crying, that was sweat dripping off her face. The thought that such a thing would be equally embarrassing slipped Mai's mind for the moment.
Without so much as a muscle twitching on her face Mai took a sip of her Fluffy Dream. And then another. And one more. She more drank than sipped in truth, the glass tilting up until she'd drained its entire contents. It proved to be but a momentary reprieve.
"May I have another?" Mai said in a voice that was far hoarser than before, one she struggled to keep even throughout her sentence. She was fine, truly. Not struggling at all. So she'd claim at least if anyone asked. The tears streaming down her cheeks proved that a lie.

A small smile crested Mai's features at Lawbringer's confident reply. The joking exuberance was almost endearing in a way. "A sight to assist with sore eyes?" Mai joked back in an even tone. She immediately regretted doing so. Oh kami, that was a horrible pun. There went her reputation.
Luckily she had a job to do, it was much easier to focus on that then any possible gaffes she might have committed. Falling into a familiar routine Yuki Onna scanned the area as they went. She nodded along with Lawbringer's explanation and carefully considered his points. Certainly, the population density meant there was more chance of trouble here.
In a matter of speaking she imagined it as the difference between a skirmish and a war. In a skirmish both sides were close to each other, their paths overlapping at the regular due to their sheer proximity and constant vigilance being a requirement to ensure the other side did not catch one off guard at an inopportune moment. War on the other hand had a much, much wider scope. Long stretches of painful dull waiting interspersed with brief moments of adrenaline raising conflict before there might once more be a long period of time where said adrenaline had no outlet. Though the city held more danger Mai much preferred it. Calmer though the alternative might be Mai would go stir crazy navigating through long stretches of safety when her expertise could make a difference elsewhere. She certainly didn't envy him even as she greatly respected his perseverance and patience.
"I suppose the easy answer would be that it is my home," Mai responded before taking a moment to think. It wouldn't be an incorrect answer either. Mai was not ashamed to admit that safeguarding her home and people was what drove her. Not incorrect, no, but incomplete. "A strong foundation is needed to build anything grand. I strive to keep my home safe so others can reach higher. The Shirayuki clan has a long history of maintaining and upholding ideals and traditions to carry them towards the future. I am taking up the torch that so many of my ancestors before me have carried. It is a duty I carry out with pride."
It showed in her eyes when she turned her head to face Lawbringer. The gleam of conviction backed by the unswayed fortitude of confidence, weighed against the weight of the world on one's shoulders. One could almost imagine faces similar to hers but not quite the same taking on a similar expression, one passed down from parent to child generation after generation, their roles similar yet different. With her attention split between heroics and the Shirayuki Dojo Mai lacked the single-minded focus towards a single task the majority of her lineage possessed but the underlying character trait was still there, simply applied to a grander theatre.
As Yuki Onna scanned the surroundings a chill breeze waved browning leaves across the street. The seasons were changing. Past gave way to future and what was no longer needed was cast off until only that which had strong roots and the stability necessary to prosper remained. Whether Mai's endeavors were amongst them remained to be seen.
"I do intend to eventually range out, perhaps check out some places overseas for a while before returning with a newfound perspective." She paused for a moment. "It... it will not be for quite a while. Tokyo is restless as of late. There is something stirring in the shadows and I cannot in good conscience take a break much less head elsewhere until it is resolved."
Mai remained silent for a while after that, her thoughts occupied by worries for the future. In those moments she looked a decade older and even smaller than her short stature normally was.
"You arrived at a great time. Tokyo needs more heroes. It heartens me to know we have one more to count on. Do you expect to be staying for long?"

With her lengthy experience in martial arts Mai was no stranger to taking a hit and combined with the intent to channel the momentum instead of attempting to counter it the Pro Hero escaped Helsing's strike with little more than a bruise.
For a moment she could’ve sworn the impact knocked the illusion loose causing the image of Helsing to briefly be overlaid with the elemental as she was sent flying, like a single stuttered frame in an old video tape, there and gone in the blink of an eye. With no time to waste she continued taking a distance immediately upon landing. Vaguely Mai got the impression of muffled sounds like thunder roiling far into the distance but she put it out of mind immediately. There was no point dwelling on new info, Mai simply made note of it and kept it in mind until she had the required context to figure out what it might mean. Within seconds she spotted an overhang in front of a store and got beneath it to stay out of the rain, carefully peering out into the surroundings when she did.
One possible way out of the illusion was secured as no more rain fell on top of her to possibly reinforce the illusion and another was likewise just a matter of time. That left but one that had yet to be covered. Distance.
The illusion that was covering Enma had followed. It was unfortunate but she could not expect perfection from the student without any communication. Except… The speed by which the illusion approached her did not match his stride nor the speed with which he'd struck at her. Keeping her guard up she repeated her earlier maneuver of attempting to wrap the elemental in a scarf. It passed through as if nought were there.
For Enma the scene would look very different, for to his eyes the illusion that covered Mai would not have gotten closer nor further. No, where it had landed after his strike was where it laid. At the same time four more elemental figures just like the first had risen from the puddles on the ground. Three of them surrounded Enma while staying two meters away to remain out of his range, their watery appendages raised to strike at any weak point he might show while the last of the four slowly approached the fallen illusion. It too raised a limb, the point sharpening into a clear replica of a sword tip aimed right at the fallen form's chest.
Much like the one struck by Mai all four would be shown to be entirely void should they be attacked, strikes passing through without providing any resistance whatsoever and leaving naught but a ripple. Further away from either of them, roughly halfway between Enma and Mai's current location, a far subtler phenomenon showed itself. Ripples in the puddles like footsteps with no visible source, the disturbances barely noticeable amidst the patterning rain.

Shirayuki Mai is devoted to any cause she upholds and despises treason or betrayal beyond all else. She strongly believes that a firm set of rules is required to maintain society and will go to great lengths to uphold justice. As such she will attempt to stand against evil and protect the innocent regardless of whether or not she is equipped to handle the situation, even going so far as to risk her life.
As a result of her rather sheltered upbringing Mai is somewhat lacking in common sense and can come off as being brash. When acting as a teacher or instructor she can be rather merciless with her words and is extremely thorough in guiding someone past their flaws. In her private life however she is fun loving, has an interest in anything she defines as cute -a very wide range that often makes little sense- and is rather outgoing.
Due to the side effects of her quirks she prefers to dress in warm clothes and has an interest in fashion, trying to make whatever outfit she wears look good and be well coordinated. Unfortunately she is vertically challenged in addition to having a slender build due to her training which greatly limits the variety of outfits she can wear, something she is rather sensitive about.

Shirayuki Mai is short and slender. She has medium length black hair that falls to just below her shoulders and dark purple eyes. Due to her interest in fashion she tends to wear a wide variety of clothes during everyday life albeit with a preference for warmer clothes. If she can accentuate an outfit with a scarf she usually will.

When working as a martial arts instructor she tends to wear a simple black gi with a white belt. This belt is not a reflection of her skill but a statement that she is an eternal student no matter how much she learns, forever seeking to better herself.

When out as a hero her costume is much more elaborate. The main part is comprised of a long sleeveless cheongsam that's pale blue with sparkling white accents akin to snowflakes, worn over a hakama of the same color. The cheongsam is topped by a high collar made to resemble translucent ice. The same material is used for decorative purposes at the hem of her cheongsam and the top of her detached sleeves. Said sleeves in turn are composed of the same cloth as her cheongsam albeit more translucent. Finally the outfit is supplemented by several translucent white pibo shawls that serve as both an accessory, a weapon and a utility tool as well as both a hair ornament and brooch crafted to look as if they were made from ice.
To finish her disguise the necklace responsible for shifting her into her costume changes her eye color from dark purple to light purple and her hair from black to a translucent, sparkly white akin to ice under the sun.

As Heiress to the Shirayuki Dojo Mai has been trained in martial arts from a young age. With a history tracing back no less than three centuries the Shirayuki Dojo while small has a rich history to draw from. Mai has been devoted to upholding its principles for as long as anyone remembers. Having taken to training like a fish to water she has devoted the majority of her free time to mastering different styles of unarmed combat and combining them into a style that both fits her and supplements her quirk. In addition to unarmed martial arts the Shirayuki Dojo also teaches several armed styles including Kendo, Bojutsu, Kobudo and more. While not possessing mastery anywhere near the level of her unarmed combat skills Mai has gained an understanding of said arts through years of practice and can use all manner of weapons to some extent as a result.
At the age of eighteen Mai attended UAU to learn how to best put her skills to use to both serve the public and preserve the ways of the Shirayuki lineage. She graduated at the age of twenty-two as an honors student and started out as a pro hero shortly afterwards. During her stay there she learned how to use binding cloth to restrain her opponents as a supplement to her normal unarmed fighting style. For while she had experience in wielding a wide variety of weapons the lethality they possessed was not something she was interested in using on the field.
For the past years she has worked as a pro hero, focusing primarily on capturing villains and assuring the safety of civilians. Additionally she has taken part in several search and rescue missions and intends to widen her scope of activities further to better serve the public.
To further work towards a brighter future for the world at large Mai works as a part time martial arts instructor at UAU in addition to the Shirayuki Dojo, ensuring the next generation is fully prepared to protect the world.

Mai wasn't entirely sure what to think but the more time passed the more doubtful she was of the veracity of Penny's words. She wasn't entirely certain how to include the fact that they'd apparently been on a date into the equation but her inquiries into the whole matter would be far more subtle than she'd originally intended lest her potential misunderstanding escalate matters. She would still be trying to get to the bottom of the matter however. The consequences of failure to act could be too high. But she digressed, that wasn't something she could address instantly much as it smarted. She should refocus on the conversation to make sure she didn't miss anything else instead.
A secret costume vote? Her palms began to sweat at the thought. She wasn't ready for something like that at all. Wasn't something like that meant to be agreed on in advance by the parties being judged? Were things like that just done spontaneously now? Mai gulped. It'd be fine. She knew her anxiety was irrational. Put her against a villain and she'd be cool against a cucumber but a situation like this? Well, that needed some working on, clearly. Did people even still say cool as a cucumber? Mai screamed on the inside even as she forced a smile onto her face. Nothing was wrong here, no sir. Nor did her stature bother her at all right now, especially not when she compared herself to her taller and more mature looking colleagues.
"I cannot cast judgement in a matter such as this," Mai responded while keeping her voice as even as possible. "Both look wonderful in their own ways. Besides, can I really call one worse when my own costume is little more than bandages and frayed cloth?"
That last statement was absolutely unnecessary. Mai was cringing on the inside. Why did she say that? Wouldn't that look like she was just fishing for compliments? Would they think she was hoping to rely on their pity to score points? Np, it was fine. This was all fine. She'd treat it as a learning experience. This was a shortcoming that could be whittled away to refine herself. Happy thoughts. Happy thoughts.
