No illusion was perfect. Poke it enough and no matter how well constructed it looked at first cracks will show. There are simply too many variables for any one person to account for, even with a quirk. The longer any fight kept going the more disadvantaged its user became. The question then was whether their opponent could last long enough for them to be able to figure the trick out and more importantly take advantage of that knowledge.
In the heat of battle where seconds shaped years actions were oft far faster than thoughts. It was the training that came before that shaped those, for good or bad. Mai always advocated for non-lethal means of combat for exactly that reason. The moment she'd spotted the water elemental Mai had flung a scarf its way. If it were truly comprised of the chilling rainwater surrounding them then her scarf would solidify just the slightest bit quicker once she channeled her quirk into it. It was a difference that would be almost imperceptible, the tactile feedback indiscernible to any but her, but she'd know. That minute detail would tell her more than a thousand words could.
Unfortunately she had to abort the maneuver partway through when one of the pressure jets turned her way. Channeling her quirk through the scarf in a brief blast to solidify it and arrest its momentum the scarf went from flowing to solid and flowing again with another flick of her wrist. This time the end of the scarf was aimed so it'd intersect with the jet partway through to verify its sharpness.
Mai's eyes widened a fraction when the scarf dragged along instead of being severed. That settled it then. Not that she hadn't had her suspicions before but something was definitely off. Making a judgement call Mai decided to shoulder the risk and raised her left arm to block while her feet left the ground.
From experience she knew that quirks that could fool the senses like this tended to have one of three restrictions. They either had a small area of effect and taking her distance from Helsing would allow one of them to snap out of it, they required persistent application meaning that getting out of the rain would go a long way to getting out of this mess or they only lasted a short time, in which case taking a distance and staying on the move was once more a valid solution. Mai did not know whether it was the best call to make but in the heat of battle 'the best' rarely existed. One could only go with the ones they believed to be correct and follow them to their conclusion, any hesitation would only make matters worse.
The strike carried her further than she'd expected and a few more steps back once her feet were once more on solid ground put even more distance between them. Now it remained to be seen whether her hunch was correct, not to mention whether Enma would catch on. If he decided to chase her this might just become a bit more complicated. Mai's social life could be described as inactive at best and nonexistent at worst. With the increasing amount of calamities Tokyo was facing her free time was scarce and best served on self-improvement rather than relaxation. Some of her fellows at the Tranquil Soul agency disagreed however and one 'intervention' later here she was, at a bar she'd never even heard of before much less visited. In fact, she was pretty sure it was Tamaya that had recommended the place. From the outside this looked more like her kind of place. Well, the decor inside at least was more tasteful than the girl's usual haunts and the music was much more to Mai's tastes.
Yes, she quite liked the ambiance in here. This was just the kind of relaxation she needed, maybe it'd even energize her enough to get another patrol in afterwards.
"Good evening," Mai greeted the bartender with a short nod. She was starting to get a bit peckish but beginning with a drink was common courtesy at a place like this, right? Yes, patience was a virtue. Trying to be in and out with just a meal would be disrespectful. "May I order a Fluffy Dream?" Remembering the part of her 'intervention' that reeked of Tamaya tacked on but that she'd ended up accepting anyway she continued. "And a mystery shot, please."

Mai replied with nought but a nod. There was no more that needed to be said. Closing her eyes for a moment Mai felt the rain wash over her and let it center her, reopening her eyes once more to view the world in colors that were just one shade lighter. Their efforts weren't wasted. Tokyo had a future.
She agreed with his assessment on the loitering civilians as well. To some extent. Shinjuku's back alleys could be harsh at times and for many law enforcement could be relied on even less than the criminal underbelly. For sifting through grime meant one's hands inevitably got dirty and asking for help was dangerous when a close look could backfire on you and endanger your future.
It was an explanation that didn't sit well with her but she hadn't been able to refute it no matter where she looked. Mai did as much as she could to ensure ways to get help and get out of such situations were open but even the most well-intentioned actions could not escape preconceived notions. For when one had been cheated one too many times trickery and treachery were all they could see.
The feeling of paranoia was almost like the persisting drizzle. Present, accounted for to some degree but never one that should be the determining factor in one's plans. It was a feeling that should be discarded if there was no evidence lest biases wormed their way in and colored perception, for while it was a natural feeling the law must be blind. In all but the most unusual situations, ones where there was nought but instinct to rely on, it was something that should not be lent any weight. This was one of these rare cases.
Mai first spotted it in the reflection of a window. A translucent shimmer in the air that droplets crashed upon. When she turned around she noticed she was alone. Just her and the figure, one that seemed to be made of flowing water and had a multitude of spikes with the appearance of water from a pressure washer sticking out of it at various angles.
When Enma looked Mai in the face he too would not find the Pro Hero he thought he was talking to. Instead he would find a similar figure there, except instead of spikes it had eight wriggling watery appendages appearing from its back. One shot forward, aiming for the hollow between his arm and chest to circle around and wrap around his torso. What would happen if it succeeded none could say.

"Convenient," Mai responded with an approving nod. Her own quirk made the use of visors in combat difficult but had that not been the case she would likely have inquired into where he'd gotten it. She doubted she would use the function often, much preferring to keep her mind sharp by memorizing routes in their entirety, but it would be most convenient for when she was called in to replace someone on short notice. The mapping application on her phone sufficed for her present needs but she was well aware it left her with an opening each time she checked, not to mention keeping one of her hands occupied while doing so.
"Then shall we?" Heading along their route Mai made sure to keep an eye on the surroundings regardless. Relaxed though it may be a single lapse of caution could be all it takes to make an irreversible mistake. Only through constant diligence could they safeguard Tokyo.
"I shall have to take your word for it," Mai admitted with a partially tilted nod. "I must admit I have not ranged far from Tokyo. An oversight and a gap in my experiences but the city has kept me too busy to branch out. Is there a big difference in required skillsets?" |

The level of their cooperation was increasing rapidly but so was their recklessness. Using the scarf tying them together as a tool showed admirable improvisation as well but greatly limited their options. They might be able to put her on the back foot with that move but they'd be in no position to capitalize on their advantage. All that would do is make their opponent more cautious. Mai could see their intent and approve of it but it would be a disservice to their determination to let their flawed approach stand.
Swinging the end of another of her scarves out while Nat was flying at her it wrapped around the scarf already tying them together. For just an instant, not even a second, Mai channeled her quirk through this one and into the other. In that moment both would go rigid before their move had concluded, either pulling Yoko along with the throw or killing Nat's momentum dead in the water. Likely both. Had she channeled for any longer they could have risked serious injury. A dislocated shoulder or a torn tendon, perhaps even a broken bone if either landed badly. Mai didn't. An instant was enough to drive her point home, just a slight tug decreasing the efficiency of their maneuver and letting them know exactly how hard they had messed up.
The very picture of calmth Mai stepped out of the reduced range of their combo attack.
"That's enough."
With a flick of her wrist she untangled her scarf and pulled it back behind her leaving only the one still tying them together. That one too she would free them of soon. Their bond needed no physical representation to show itself.
"Well done, both of you." Mai added with a shallow nod and an approving look in her eyes. Stepping towards them she continued. "Nat. Your hard work is showing. Continue focusing on your foundations, only through perseverance can you reach the top." Removing the scarf from her ankle Mai let Nat get her feet back under her. The road would be long and hard but Mai was confident she could walk it. "Yoko. The same thing that can cause harm can do good. A tool is a tool. What matters is how you use it. Master yourself and victory will always be within reach." Unspooling the scarf Mai wrapped it around her the student's instead and tucked the ends in, allowing the same fabric that had just harried them to soften the effects of Yoko's quirk usage.
Stepping away with a faint hint of a smile she left them to their considerations. There were more students to see to and the pair had plenty to think about in the meantime.
"Next! Ready yourself!"

"I know not how much overlap there is between business and heroics," Mai lied, she'd seen time and time again how many heroes employed business strategies more than morals, "but I certainly agree that the conditions surrounding an expansion are as important as the specifics themselves. Even the best laid plans do not work in a vacuum." It was why Mai wanted to make sure students got plenty of field experience. Planning and training in a safe environment certainly helped but no strategy worked without considering all the factors at hand.
"I am glad to hear that."
The most important and hardest thing to learn from any failure was the ability to bounce back from it. It was one that was impossible to truly master but incredibly important to become good at, lest one fall apart at the first hurdle to stand in their way.
"A sentiment I can agree with and one I too harbored in my youth," Mai responded with a sentimental smile. "I cannot say whether it is the right path or the wrong one. All I can advise is to continue working on social skills in addition to martial skills. It is impossible to be good at something instantly. The longer you wait the longer it will take."
In that, Mai was truly speaking from experience. Motivations were varied and even the heroes that cared for naught but their own fame could contribute greatly to the safety of the public. Scorning their ways to protect some intangible purity of their profession was no different from squandering resources and making innocents pay the price. It was a lesson that had taken Mai far too long to realize and even to this day she mostly refrained from associating with their ilk. For as much as she'd like to be a paragon of justice she could not quite see past her biases just yet. Perhaps one day. She doubted it.
Seeing Helsing head over to assist, Mai hung back and observed for now, ready to support if need be. When he returned she simply greeted him with an acknowledging nod and continued on their patrol, only a brief glance cast back at the old lady in passing. There was narry but a patter on her umbrella, the worst of the rain seemingly having passed. Mai and Enma themselves were not as lucky. Their patrol seemed to take them in the same direction as the clouds' passing, the cold rain seeping into their clothes.
"A common misconception. While Shinjuku certainly has the highest crime numbers within Tokyo the ward is vast, a great many patrols pass peacefully, this is not out of the norm."
Even so Mai couldn't help but feel like there was truth to his words. She couldn't quite put her finger on the why but something felt subtly off, like her reflection in the window, the water streaming down the glass slightly messing with her silhouette. It was likely just her imagination. Hopefully.
Checking the next alley they passed Mai spotted nought but the usual, a group of people in their late teens to mid twenties smoking. They cast a brief glance and a few glares at the pair before moving deeper into the alley. Rude, certainly, but nothing to be worried about. Yet the feeling still stayed.
"In the field logic and intuition must be balanced. Tell me, Helsing. What are they telling you right now?"

"I am."
Her back was straight and her arms crossed behind her, feet just far enough apart that she looked like the very picture of confidence. Were it not for her size and the lack of tension in her expression she might have even looked intimidating. Unlike Max her prep took far less long, the necklace she was wearing having switched her into her hero costume with not a hair out of place. Mai always made sure that all of her equipment, costume and combat scarves alike, were fully checked over and ready to go at any moment.
The necklace was the single most expensive item she owned and without it being part of a sponsorship deal back in her youth she'd likely never have thought to get it. Even so she couldn't help but admit that despite the extravagant luxury it presented its convenience made it more than worth it.
"Are you familiar with the route? I have yet to patrol this specific area."
While she oft patrolled all around Tokyo wherever it was needed the majority of her patrols took place in Edogawa. Traditionalist though she may be Mai was always open to widening her horizons, in certain aspects of course, and was more than happy to create connections with colleagues for the sake of public safety.
Their unity was their greatest strength over the scourge of villainy and to neglect it would be the height of foolishness. If heroes had been better connected before…
Channeling a bit of cold through the pores inside her nose Mai took a deep breath, the chilled air coursing through her lungs and bringing clarity with it that expelled her darker thoughts before they could spiral. There was no point in repeating that same train of thought over and over. They simply had to learn from it and be better in the future. Mai's fist clenched. That was all they could do.
“How are you finding Tokyo so far, Lawbringer?”

"A pleasure to formally make your acquaintance, Helsing," Mai replied while keeping an eye on the surroundings. Days where it rained always made Mai a bit more cautious. On one hand it made her quirk more potent, the moisture freezing far more easily atop a person and hindering their movement far more than a simple chill could. On the other it cooled herself down too and gave her a far lower limit before she succumbed to hypothermia.
Days such as these were ones were she had to pick her battles carefully, for every choice she made caused a ripple not unlike the ones in the puddles she was walking through, ripples that lasted just slightly longer than they normally would. Over the years she had learned to adapt to the differences of course but the caution never faded.
"An excellent attitude to have," she responded with a curt nod. Training was wonderful to prepare someone for being out in the field but it was impossible to truly account for the myriad factors involved in true combat.
"I do not mind. It has been four years since I founded my agency.
She’d done so immediately after graduating. The preparations had all been finished beforehand and the moment she officially had her license she’d submitted the paperwork. Several internships with specific agencies, extra courses and inquiries with established pros had made it so that she was fully prepared by then. Yet despite all the hard work she put in she had no intention of forgetting that it was her ancestral Dojo where she founded her agency, not a building she financed herself, and that she certainly leaned heavily on their reputation to ensure smooth sailing and a quick rise in the beginning. Regardless of her intentions and the produced results Mai always kept in mind that her success was far from just the result of her own efforts.
"Since then we have widened our reach greatly. To prevent succumbing to delusions of grandeur I purposefully limited our scope to just Edogawa for the first year while we got settled, making use of the time to get to know and cooperate with other local agencies to further our efficiency. I would highly recommend establishing connections with your fellows while at UAU. They are likely to be the next generation of Pro Heroes alongside yourself after all."
To her great shame Mai had neglected socializing to focus on training and preparing to set up her agency, a choice she regretted to this day. It had certainly benefited her skills but she couldn’t help but wonder how much faster she’d have been able to implement certain measures or at the very least test them at a larger scale had she had more allies to rely on from the beginning. "But I digress. This program is intended to assist with exactly that and more. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask."

"I'm glad to hear it," Mai responded to Kazashi with a genuine smile on her face. In a way she was almost jealous but she had chosen her own path and had no intentions of regretting it. Perhaps one day…
Not yet though. There was too much left to be done before she could settle down. Far too much.
"H-Hawaiian, of course!" She replied to Stellar's clarification with several quick nods. "Perhaps I should. I have been meaning to travel for quite a while but the trouble as of late has made it difficult to go on vacation." It was truly a shame but Mai wouldn't give her calling up for the world. Every person she saved and the look in their eyes confirmed her path more than words ever could. Someone had to stand up for justice and why shouldn't that be her?
It was for that very reason that she took Penny's words extremely seriously and only narrowly restrained herself from confronting Lone Wolf then and there. Making a scene in the middle of the party would run contrary to its purpose and Starling Soul's wishes. Settling for briefly glaring at his back instead Mai tried to calm herself. She had heard that Mark's behavior could be a bit problematic at times but she'd had no idea that it had escalated to such an extent. That was not something she was able to forgive.
Stellar's comment shook her out of it and made her begin to doubt her assumptions. Had she misread the situation? Unfortunately unlike several of her colleagues Mai didn't speak enough English to truly understand the situation.
"Ah, indeed," Mai confirmed with a nod when Kazashi slung an arm over her shoulder, bringing her out of her earlier introspection and back into business mode. "If there is anything we can assist or cooperate with please do not hesitate to reach out, miss Stellar."
The next arrival wasn't someone she was entirely sure she recognized. Despite her attempts at creating connections Mai was still far from knowing even a fraction of Tokyo's heroes personally and the Halloween costume did not make it easier. Even so she had a hunch. His build was similar to images she'd seen of the newest member of UAU's faculty.
"Greetings. Lawbringer, was it? I am Yuki Onna but you may call me Mai. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
She was perhaps a touch more formal than what was required but in her eyes it was better to come off as too respectful than not enough. With some luck nobody had noticed her attempting to instinctively extend her hand for a shake before realizing she'd need to move it around Kazashi to do so.
"Ah, Iphigenia. It has been too long," Mai continued in the same formal tone, defaulting to it while she once more caught her bearings. "I hope you both have been well."

The area of Shinjuku today's patrol was meant to cover wasn't the shortest but the area should be relatively safe. Ever since the villain Bakuretsu had been ousted from her base a set of patrols had been set up as early warning systems in case another villain made a move to happen to take it over or she returned. As months came and went it seemed ever less likely but the area had been the safest it'd been in decades since the patrols were established so the routes had been added onto a permanent rotation. "Greetings. I assume introductions are unnecessary but let us go through them regardlessly. I am Shirayuki Mai, also known as the Numbing Hero Yuki Onna. For the duration of this patrol you may refer to me as Yuki Onna. A pleasure to formally make your acquaintance."By the time she'd finished talking Mai had reached the edge of the roof, her back straight and arms crossed behind it as she scanned the streets below. The drizzle wasn't helping with visibility but it was nowhere near the point of being a hindrance. Satisfied with what she saw she turned around and gestured for Enma to follow as they made their way down to street level. Partially through their descent Mai added a question into the mix. "Do you have any combat experience out in the field so far?" Her tone stayed even to ensure she did not sound judgmental. It was an honest question after all, one that might become quite important. Stepping onto the city streets Mai made sure Enma was comfortable with their surroundings before setting off at a steady pace. "Keep an eye on the alleyways. Shinjuku has trouble where you least expect it."

"Copy that, Recall."
Within the smoke cloud Mai spoke softly into her comms while doing her best to dodge beams and debris alike. With the limited visibility it took most of her focus but the way it caused the smoke cloud to shift obscured her movements perfectly as she ran. She doubted anyone had any idea where she was by now. Keeping track of an opponent on a chaotic battlefield such as this was difficult enough without them trying to hide their position. With smoke and Mai's dastardly plan thrown into the mix it would be nearly impossible.
Fear of the unknown had haunted mankind since long before the dawn of civilization and to this day there were still few things more hair-raising. The Blazing Djinn would preserve this feeling for as long as possible. By the time the smoke cloud would abate Mai would be long gone. Whether she was hiding nearby or had left the area entirely was, of course, entirely unknown. It was perfectly possible that at any moment she could jump back into the fray. Just as it was possible that she would never reappear.
It was the kind of treacherous trickery belonging to a true villain.

"Right back at you," Mai responded to Kazashi with a hug. "Ah, not horror of course, I mean. Nevermind. You look great." With eyes darting around for anything to distract from her slip-up she latched onto Vox's greeting. "A pleasure to meet you, Ryota. I shall hold your advice to heart." Mai had heard of Vox before and vaguely recalled seeing him as a first year before she'd graduated but she hadn't had the opportunity to meet him yet as a Pro Hero. With some luck this event could serve to foster connections now that so many of her colleagues were present. With a professional nod she shook Stellar's hand as well. "Thank you. Yours is wonderful as well. Is it Okinawan?" She asked with a friendly smile that was somewhat strained. Cute? That hadn't been what she was going for. Was Stellar a kindred spirit or someone making a jab at her height and hiding it behind a bright demeanor? She'd reserve judgement for now. "Oh, say hi to Zenji and Yuzuki for me when you do!" Mai responded to Kazashi. It'd been a while since she'd seen them and Mai couldn't help but wonder how they were. Kids grew so fast at that age. Her wholesome reminiscence was interrupted when her eyebrow twitched at Penny's increasingly vulgar way of trying to draw attention to herself. Catching herself right before she was about to speak up Mai took a deep breath and set the matter aside. At least she attempted to. A snort escaped her at Ryota's reply, one she immediately sought to stifle by coughing over it. Pretending she'd choked on her drink she coughed a few more times while turning away to hide her smile, shoulders shaking with barely suppressed laughter all the while. Guilt hit immediately after and prompted her to act as normal as possible. Oh kami, how did she normally stand? Was she standing too straight right now? Were her shoulders normally this squared or slightly more relaxed? Did her face look stiff because she was paying too much attention to her body language? Mai's cheeks flushed in embarrassment before she managed to channel her quirk through them to rid them of the heat. "Ah, no. I haven't really talked with Recall since the wildlife incidents at the bay. Work has been busy recently and I'm ashamed to admit socializing has fallen a bit by the wayside," Mai confessed with a frown and a penitent expression. Finding a balance in between dealing with the increasing amounts of trouble Tokyo faced and maintaining her personal life had gotten increasingly difficult as of late. In truth Mai was suspicious of the convenient timing of today's double booking. It rarely happened that her patrol route happened to overlap fully with someone else's. She had some suspicions that one of her agency members had set things up this way intentionally. If that proved to be true it would certainly be problematic, for surely if even her fellows saw her work ethic as such a problem that they'd resort to deceit and trickery to get her to take a few hours off it was a personal flaw that needed addressing. "Please forgive me for mentioning work at the party," Mai added with a slight head bow, ashamed that she was failing to follow Kazashi's advice moments after it'd been given to someone else. Had that made her look arrogant? She'd need to figure out if she needed to apologize after the party. Mai would do so now but she didn't want to ruin the mood, better to save that for later. "How have all of you been?"

The Maimmy raised her glass at Starling Soul's words, both eager to unwind and anxious to leave her agency unattended for the night. Which, she supposed, proved the necessity of this party. Taking in a deep breath she swirled the champagne in her mouth to let it seep into her taste buds, even going so far as to close her eyes -the bandages on her face were see through of course, Mai would never risk being caught off guard even off duty- to enjoy it in full. For just a moment all felt right. Cheery chatter, friendly faces and not a care in the world. Even the annoyingly familiar sight of Mark and Penny causing a commotion didn't tick her off. Well, not as much as it usually did. The fact that Penny had such a cute costume certainly helped. Mai was tempted to ask where she'd gotten it but something told her doing do would be a bad idea. Her eyes widened even further when Kazashi showed herself. Before Mai knew it her feet had carried her to the group. "Kaz! I love your outfit!" Mai said cheerily and honestly, giving an appreciative nod to Penny as well and a genial one to Mark. "I don't think we've met. I'm Yuki Onna but you can call my Mai," she continued while turning to Stellar and extending her hand just like the other Pro had done moments before.

Mai barely stopped herself from squealing back in response to the cute creature at the edge of a rink. An otter! Not an animal she'd been expecting here but certainly one she was happy to see. "Hey little guy," Mai softly said from a distance. She wouldn't get too close so as to not startle it. "Are you here alone?" Putting one hand on the railing Mai adjusted the pink scarf she was wearing over her yellow sweater while looking onto the rink to see if she could spot its owner. Could it be one of the coaches? Mai remembered reading there were coaches available at these open lessons but now that she was here she was no longer certain she remembered right. Were those even today? She thought they were but given that she'd only managed to come here due to a double booking on patrol routes she'd been in a bit of a rush to get here and hadn't had the time to double check. Feigning a confident smile she nodded at whoever she made eye contact with on the rink, hoping one of them would be the person in question.
