Mai refrained from looking too closely as he recovered. She knew far better than to risk chafing any potential pride by insisting on bearing witness to this particular moment of weakness. That was not what Samaritan needed right now. Feeling the heat infuse her own numbed palms through the hot pack in her hands Mai simply closed her eyes and went through breathing exercises until he called out to her. Opening them once more she faced him as she thought his question through. Perhaps a more psychologically savvy hero would have fed him the words he needed most right now but Mai wasn't confident she could give them without botching the whole thing. No, she'd always just acted in the way she felt was right and kept going. She'd simply reply with her honest opinion on what she'd have done, unfiltered and brash as it may be. Mai knew she wasn't perfect and that her view wasn't the only right one. There was no point putting thoughts into his head. She'd share hers and let him draw his own conclusions. "I would neutralize the threat as quickly as possible. Injuries can be recovered from, death cannot. A villain that would do something like this needs to be stopped and if possible provided help by trained and licensed medical professionals, not words thrown at them by us in the heat of the moment. Ensuring the safety of everyone involved must be our top priority."The words were spoken from the heart with a fervor that bordered on the zealous. No one person could do everything. No one person should have to. It was why she'd founded an agency and turned her attention to attempting to coordinate even when her talents laid in martial arts. She could make a difference out in the field and many times she had. More important was that there were a great many others that could do so too if given the chance but if half were in the wrong place at the wrong time the difference made would be far too small, even if Mai herself did everything she could. The slogan of her newfound program was a mantra she oft repeated to herself. 'Always remember. You never fight alone.' "Professionals are each trained and educated for specific purposes and heroes are taught combat for a reason. Sometimes one must be cruel to be kind. Were there no need for direct conflict there would be no need for heroes and field personnel would be trained in a wildly different way. To take up the mantle of heroism is to acknowledge that some people have to be stopped by force, both for their own good and for that of everyone else. For just as cruelty to an enemy is kindness to an ally so can kindness to an enemy be cruelty to an ally. There is an old saying that the road to hell is paved in good intentions. I have seen far too many incidents where optimistic judgments have led to tragedy."She didn't elaborate on what that constituted. Both because she was sure he could imagine what she meant and because she had no interest in picking at old wounds more than she needed to. Mai couldn't afford to focus on herself here. It was just a hunch but Michael's behavior felt extreme, even for a hero. "Should you wish to talk more on it or anything else I will be here for it. Counselor Gotoh, ah, I mean Gleipnir too is available no matter what the subject is. There is no shame in seeking advice, assistance or help. Always remember. You never fight alone."
Mai truly hoped she was wrong but the more she saw of him the more his actions nagged at something in the back of her head. Survivor's guilt drove people to unhealthy extents and her concerns were growing. In between the injuries he'd incurred in the Hostage Rescue Simulation and how hard he'd pushed his body now it'd be downright negligent of her not to pay attention. Her heart ached at the thought. She truly hoped she was wrong but if she wasn't -or even if she was- he had to know she was willing to be there for him. So she met his gaze, hoping she was looking in the right place, and spoke with her eyes the intent words could obfuscate. There were others beside him more than willing to share any burden.

Pride warred with duty as Mai listened to Michael's words making it difficult for her to keep up a villainous demeanor. For a moment she wondered whether he wasn't in the right. Whether she simply hadn't tried hard enough. The thought left a bitter taste in her mouth. Was she compromising on her morality due to her own weakness? "Magnificent, Samaritan." Mai muttered under her breath, a soft smile coloring her features. She channeled her quirk at low intensity through the pores on her face to cool herself down and focus her attention, pushing the smile back down so it wouldn't be audible in her tone. Taking a deep breath she listened as the ticking stopped leaving a silence that was loud in its absence. "Making no choice is a choice as well and trying to help everyone is the same as helping no one. Do you believe yourself a god, Michael Faraday?" Yuki Onna asked with venom in her voice. He had outdone himself in using a wonderfully creative application of their abilities to disable the bomb, yet what would it accomplish? "Would a villain harboring such hatred against someone they'd give their life to see them dead simply let them go because their first attempt was thwarted. Fool! You have simply increased the number of casualties!"Letting out a sigh Mai stopped channeling her quirk. "That's enough for today. Any more would lead to severe injuries. I implore you, learn from this. You only have a single life," Mai paused for a moment in the middle of her speech. Perhaps if convincing him to take care of himself would not work she could speak to his selflessness. "It is clear you will be able to save many in the future. If you die needlessly there may not be someone else who can. Please, no matter the reason, make sure you stay alive."By the end of her request Mai's voice was almost fragile, her words brittle as the first ice in winter. Slowly she clenched and unclenched her numb hands to increase her blood flow. Turning away she walked over to the side of the room. "Refrain from moving too much, I'll bring over hot packs momentarily."
Returning with the box in tow Mai handed over several before placing both of her hands around one as well. Giving him a moment to recover she faced him, doing her best to look right where she estimated his eyes to be. "How are you feeling?"

"Overconfidence is a flimsy shield.”One that would get him killed. Mai knew well -it could even be said she knew better than most- that it was impossible for a single person to shoulder everything. Much as she'd love to do the same she had experienced firsthand where that led. The failure to do more than react to individual attacks during Babel. Her inability to secure civilians in time to reinforce the group facing one of the main threats during The Elementalist's terrorist attack leading to the tower rising in Toshima. The subsequent calamity that was coming to be known as Dream World or The Nightmare as a result. Not a single one of those could have been stopped by someone shouldering everything. As much as the very idea grated her to her core she had to acknowledge the facts for willful ignorance would lead to more casualties. That was why she was here today. Why she'd founded an agency. The reason she advocated for a program to put more heroes in the field and to improve coordination between already existing ones. So too was it why she could not afford to let up on him here today. She had learned the hard way that she could not shoulder everything alone. It was a lesson that had cost innocent lives. Deaths that rational or not she still blamed herself for every night. Michael did not have to learn the same way as her. No matter how hard she had to be on him here today she'd do everything she could to internalize that lesson in him before such a bad habit could take root. "We're in agreement then. Turn away and leave to fight another day. I will gladly walk you all the way out," Mai responded in her best impression of a villainous voice even as her posture shifted to intercept him and the bomb unceasingly ticked away behind her. She knew of course that he wouldn't take the offer. Not if this situation had been real and most certainly not in a simulation. So long as he thought to try words in a situation where he was simply talking to a wall however it was her duty as an instructor to show him why it would not work. Perhaps in the field he might observe a success once in a blue moon with such a method, yet one had to live through many days to see such a sight and but one mistake could be enough to shut one's eyes forever. Her jaw clenched as faces flashed through her mind's eye. She wished Mei were still here to learn that lesson in a kinder way, yet the girl had been robbed of the chance far too long before her time. For a moment she saw her visage reflected on Michael's featureless face. It was good her gaze did not need to stay there. Footwork was the most important part of any martial art. She'd explained it to her students time and time again. Mai did not need to see his expression to tell what he was intending for focusing on the opponent's face was far from the only way to tell what they were doing. The legs were where motions began, quirk or no quirk. It was simply an instinct ingrained in humanity through millennia upon millennia of experience. When Michael launched himself past her Mai did not foolishly attempt to get in between him and his goal, no, she simply swerved and struck at him in passing. Aiming quick strikes at his joints while channeling her quirk into them to hinder his mobility as much as possible she sought to harry his future moves instead of stopping his attempts here and now. The chain tightly wrapped around the bomb and the mannequin clinked as Michael slammed into them and tried to create a gap. The resounding clang echoed throughout the room overshadowing the steady ticking entirely for a moment. But a moment was all it was, for the test of time required far more than one instance of giving it one's all to be withstood. "So you have chosen death," Yuki Onna stated in a tone that was both mournful and soft. As if it were not a villainous boast, one-liner or threat. Nor even a promise. Simply a remorseful statement of fact by one who could already see how it would end. Even Mai herself was surprised by how cold and empty her words had sounded. "Explain to me, Samaritan," she spoke as she walked towards him and his objective. "With your back turned to your enemy and your efforts on a task that requires your full attention, how do you intend to accomplish anything?"Once she reached him she'd place the palms of her hands on his back and begin to channel the cold of her quirk to numb him ever further unless he managed to avoid her or force her to abort the action. All the while she listened for his reply without letting up, her mind set on continuing her actions.
TL;DR: Mai refrains from stopping Michael in favor of hitting his joints in passing to channel the cold from her quirk into them and limit his mobility. Once he reaches his target she walks over to him while asking what he intends to do now that he has an enemy at his back and a task that requires his full attention in front. While listening for his answer she attempts to put her palms on his back and further channel her quirk to numb him until he can no longer fight. Tag: Samaritan

Villainy never slept. No matter how often it was put down it always reemerged whenever one stopped paying attention. The Blazing Djinn was no different. When the adhesive round had struck her Mai had blasted her quirk at full tilt, the pressure and cold combining to make it freeze just a bit above and around her instead of constricting her entirely. So long as she remained still it looked like nothing was wrong. Which was exactly what she'd done until the moment Farrin was blasted away and beams of light came falling out of the sky. SuperNova had come through. One of the beams passed just close enough that it heated the outside of the adhesive enough for her to burst free. "Muhahaha! You wished to capture me? Fools! A Djinn grants three wishes, there are yet two left!"
That was when the rabbits hit. Their shadow loomed over her darkening the sun. As Mai gazed up her eyes widened, eyelids trembling at the display. There was only one word that came to her mind at the sight, but one that described the horde bearing down on her. "C-cute." Then she was knocked over, flailing for a second before the rabbits turned into smoke blanketing the area. "D-do not expect the final wish to be so easy to attain!" Her voice resounded from within the cloud, echoing through the streets in a way that made it difficult to figure out from where it originated. A djinn oft appeared in a puff of smoke and the next appearance of The Blazing Djinn would be no different. Like an ambush predator Mai silently moved through the cloud, waiting for the next opportunity to strike. No lamp could hold her just yet.

“Reason only works with the reasonable. I do not intend to be reasonable today,” Yuki Onna fired back with a cold look in her eyes. "You do not have the power to bargain here. Nor the time."Naive. That was all Mai could say about it. She too wished for a world were words were enough, deterrents stopped all crime and everyone could live in peace. Michael seemed to understand that villains were people just like them, each with their own goals, reasons and motivations. What he failed to grasp however was that just as it made it possible to get through to them with words it made it just as likely that you'd make the situation worse. In the field you could only see a small part of your opponent, the one short interaction you'd have with them far from enough to understand their life. It was impossible to know what they'd been through and because of that it was almost as impossible to be sure of what would get them to stand down and what would get them to escalate or lose it. There was a time and place for everything and as much as Mai loathed using force unless necessary talking a villain through their problems could not happen unless they were fully secured and could not endanger the safety of themselves or those around them. Anything less was no different from willful ignorance that did far more harm than it did good. "I am willing to die for my beliefs and take everyone here with me," Mai continued in her best impression of a villainous voice. "Can you say the same?"

"You are too late, Samaritan." Standing in between Michael and his goal was Yuki Onna clad in her full fit. Hero outfit, combat scarves and an expression that left no question as to her intent to let him pass. "There is no way you can save your friend and get the bomb away from here in time. It's over! I will have my revenge even if it is the last thing I do!"
Taking a guarded stance Mai prepared to counter his approach as the timer ticked away behind her with a rather stereotypical noise. The longer Samaritan took to get past her the more the odds of his success went down. A failure that would result in deaths were this not an exercise. Michael Faraday was a promising student in Mai's opinion and a fitting prospect for the Tranquil Soul hero agency. His style of prioritizing the safety of civilians while relying on non-lethal methods of combat too fit the agency to a T. Yet what he lacked was a willingness to strike first. Villains did not play fair. It was a fact so ingrained in their society none would doubt it yet few continued that train of thought into what it truly meant for those who faced them. In an ideal world pacifism was the way to go yet to take no sides in a conflict was no different than to go with the one that was winning. As a hero there were times such a method could spell disaster, something the steady ticking behind Mai made more than clear. Michael's idealism was clearly a large part of what drove him but it needed to be tempered lest it break entirely when villainy pushed them all past the breaking point once more. Mai channeled a bit of cold through her lungs with her next breath, letting the chill calm her and expel her emotions as she exhaled. In between Operation Babel, the attacks caused by The Elementalist, the yet unexplained threats arising from the ocean and the recent disaster that put half the city to sleep a pattern was beginning to show and it was no longer a matter of if, only when. Mai knew she could not protect all of Tokyo on her own but she wouldn't rest until she'd prepared it as well as she could for whatever may come next. Even if it required acting the villain while a mannequin was chained to a comically oversized bomb behind her.

"Prioritize your own safety. Do not take any risks. If the fight turns against us you are to flee immediately, understood?"Mai didn't have the capability to both dissuade Player One from heading into danger and fight off the threat at the same time, as much as she'd have liked. To allow one that may be seeking redemption to face mortal danger was a disgrace and if he were still an unrepentant villain seeking his aid would be shameful. Yet none were more keenly aware of her limits than Mai herself. One did not enter this field without a strong will. To dissuade a hero or villain when their mind was set was nearly impossible. Gritting her teeth she redoubled her assault. Her mind too was made up. She would make it unnecessary for him to risk himself with her own two hands. For that was what a hero did. Whenever her footing allowed for it she kicked one of the lower tentacles at the others, every contact channeling her quirk and ensuring the slower tentacles would get into the way of the faster ones. Elbow, forearm and knee strikes and were added into the mix when she felt her hands begin to numb. Yuki Onna was in the zone, each blow flowing into the next like water. Instead of slowing down due to exhaustion her progress sped up as the beast suffered far more than she did. At her current rate it would not take long for her to reach the source of the problem. Of course, that was the exact moment her phone rang. With everything going on right now there was a fair chance it was someone in danger quite literally calling for aid. With a curse she swore and picked it up, three limbs making it far harder to fend off the assault than four. One tentacle made it through and slammed into her hip before she managed to divert its course. "This is not a good time, Maf-""Professor Shirayuki! We've found witnesses who know who's behind all this!""What?! Sphinx, come agai-" "Their name is Doctor Hail. He or she is the one that gave all the crabs vocal cords!""Hold on. Sphinx, what are you-"As the giant blue shell surfaced one tentacle caught Mai right in the gut, driving the air from her lungs and sending her skidding a step back. With a curse she stuck the phone in between her ear and her shoulder before rushing forward once more, splitting her focus as well as she could to reach it as fast as possible. "Find a safe location and stay where you are, we'll reinforce you as soon-""Oh no, the witnesses! They're going for the witnesses!"
Hearing a clatter on the other end of the line Mai's eyes widened. Gritting her teeth she threw caution to the wind and prioritized offence over defense, tilting her body at the right time to take a dozen glancing blows instead of tanking them fully. With every hit she took she channeled her quirk, hampering the beast no matter what it did. The more either of them struck the less it could do. With the majority of its attention focused on her she hoped Player One could put his money where his mouth was. Her care for the safety of her students was far greater than her shame over needing assistance from a villain. "Sphinx? What happened? Sphinx!? Sphiiiiiinx!"
The lack of response and sounds she could hear in the background only served to fuel her anxiety. Letting her phone drop she caught it midway through its fall and slid it into a hidden pocket within her costume before addressing Player One. "Do you possess the means to kill this thing?" Yuki Onna shouted in his direction while fighting with all she had. This would go much faster if he did but if he lacked the ability she would not place any blame on him. She would simply need to redouble her assault and finish it herself. Regardless of whether he could or not the moment the fight was over she'd check whether he was alright -if he was still alive- and get her colleague to the nearest first aid station before rushing over to where her students were. Today was a hectic day and it showed no sign of letting up. As much as she felt like she was using a bucket to pour water out of a sinking boat Mai could not let up, for even if her efforts seemed pointless every second she stood still risked the life of another innocent. No matter how much it took out of her that was not something Mai was willing to let happen. She'd fight until they won or her body gave out. Mai could only hope it'd be enough.

With the resisting force suddenly vanishing into something that wasn't thin nor air Mai promptly landed on her back, only narrowly closing her eyes in time. Every cell of her being strained to ignore the sounds and sensations that followed. "I'm alri- unhurt," Mai replied lethargically, wiping her face as well as she could with a clean part of her scarves before opening her eyes once more. She began to raise a hand to accept Recall's offer of assistance before lowering it once more as she fully took in her own state. There was hardly a speck of white left on her costume. "J-just a moment please."With the parts of her scarves that had been under her when she'd landed Mai cleaned her face, hair and hands as best as she could before transforming out of her costume and back into her beach outfit, a colorful yukata paired with a straw hat. She'd need to double back and pick up one of her spare costumes before transforming again lest she end up with a nasty surprise. Mai wasn't the wasteful type but she highly doubted it could be salvaged. Still, so long as their only loss was an outfit she'd chalk it up as a win. "My apologies for the delay and my thanks for the save. That was quite the attack," Mai acknowledged while casting a look towards the large stain on the beach with a Yuki Onna-shaped clean spot in the middle. "I'm glad the test was successful. Truth be told I was starting to be worried this could escalate to be another disaster on the scale of Babel but with the majority of the creatures fended off we should not have all too many problems responding to the remaining beasts."
Perhaps it was overly optimistic of Mai to make that conclusion after a single fight but so long as they kept hope in their hearts nothing could keep them down. Perhaps it would even keep the wound on her back that she hadn't realized was an open one from staining her yukata. "Do you believe these countermeasures could be used to secure the entire coast?"

The more Player One talked the more confused Mai got. Modern day slang was always so difficult to understand. Every time she'd finally learned what it meant the youth had already moved on to the next version. It was wonderful to see their adaptability but incredibly frustrating to witness their casual disregard for the history of their language. Putting the thought aside she returned to going along with his suggestion to 'play ball'. No, wait. Was it play golf these days? She'd have to remember that. "I can certainly lend a- Watch out!" Mai shouted as she saw the tentacle coming for him far too fast for her to intercept in time. She swore under her breath when he went down. She couldn't cover both him and her armored colleague which left but one option. As she charged into the fray Yuki Onna called back over her shoulder. "Are you alright? Leave this one to me and get to safety!"With four limbs against eight it would not be the easiest fight but as a pro hero she could not back down. Not while innocents were at risk. Raining a flurry of blows down on the lashing tentacles she channeled her quirk to chill and try to freeze them while she fought her way towards the beast. Each parry, block or strike would stun it just a bit more. Whether it would be enough for her efforts to pay off only time could tell.

"Understood," Yuki Onna responded curtly with a nod. She wondered if other heroes prepared a more varied repertoire of answers in advance but quickly put the thought aside. Efficiency was crucial in situations such as this, so what if she had responded to the last three questions in what was basically the exact same way? Besides, with her standing a good distance in front of her colleague and facing the incoming threat there was no way Recall could see her face flush in embarrassment. She was doing perfectly fine. It was the results that mattered. Speaking of which... Just in case Mai had prepared herself to face more of the smaller foes coming their way but it appeared to have been a needless precaution. They scattered the moment the music changed, fleeing as if they were in immense pain. It was not a sight Mai rejoiced in but it certainly served as a potent deterrent. Seemingly however it wasn't potent enough for their fiercest foe. It was large. Far larger than it had any right to be. The beast stomped out of the water like a blend between a car, a fish and a bear, the fin atop its back reaching twice as high as Mai was tall. Taking it down would be a challenge but Mai did not take the path of heroism because it would be easy. Meeting it at the water's edge before it could get closer to her colleague Yuki Onna met its ferocious warcry with silent determination. One of its fin-paws came up to swat her away and she narrowly dodged away from it while landing several swift quirk-infused blows in return. The beast was far too massive to take down with a single good hit but if she could disable it their victory was practically secured. Dodge by dodge and blow by blow she harried the sea bear, the biting cold penetrating deep inside and slowing it more and more with every hit. She was on a course to win and they both knew it, Mai could see it in her opponent's eyes. With a thunderous roar it reared back before pawing at the ground. Mai's eyes widened. Immediately she flicked both ends of her scarf to wrap around its front fin-paws and not a second too late as it charged right at her aiming to bowl her out of the way. Instead of dodging she went low at the last moment, sliding beneath it while keeping a tight hold of her scarf. Spinning around to face it once she was past she secured her footing and leaned back just as the scarf tightened and began to pull on her. Without holding anything in reserve she blasted her quirk out through her feet with everything she had. This was more than a fight. It was a struggle to prove that their plan could work. The soundwaves could not stop all threats but without their attention being pulled in a thousand directions hero society could finally organize and deal with the biggest ones. This was the proof of concept. If they faltered here all their efforts would be for nought. Mai's grip tightened as she drove her feet down, holding onto her scarf like it was a set of reins. The middle dug into her back as she strained, frozen ice shattering around her feet while she was dragged forward by the sea bear's frenzied charge. Mai did not let up. It would be an insult to everything she stood for. Even as the scarf dug into her back so hard it drew blood. Even as her hands threatened to give out under the strain. Yuki Onna persevered. Her feet left a trail in the sand meters long, freezing and shattering it over and over until the beast finally ground to a halt. "Recall! Now!" Mai shouted as she went low. With the beast halted in place Iphigenia had a clear shot. All that was left was to pull the trigger.

Had it not been for the fact that she'd already been zig zagging as the shots were fired and that Farrin's focus was split Mai would likely have been hit dead on. As it was the first shot missed, the second shot grazed her and only the third hit her in full. Even as he'd pointed his arm her way Mai had realized she wouldn't be able to get out of the way in time. Instead she'd done the next best thing and threw her blunted sword at him with as much force as she could manage. "Backstab!" Mai shouted right before going down, announcing her sneak attack with the audacity of a true villain. Added onto it was the fact that the sword had been thrown so it'd spin horizontally resulting in a slashing attack should it hit, not a stab. Lying after all was the domain of villains. Years of practice had ingrained certain movements and made them instinctive. There was a chance that with her usual gear and the intent to win at all costs she'd have been able to avoid the third bullet but as this was an exercise she'd brought neither. Instead her instincts resorted to damage control. Even as she'd been throwing the sword her body had angled itself so she'd take minimal damage from her incoming introduction to the floor. With a thud the Blazing Djinn went down at the same time as Sadako. Unlike Sadako the muscles in her jaw were still clenching up a bit too much to offer any words or an acknowledgement but her thoughts were along the same lines.

"Roger that," Mai replied with a nod. It was truly wonderful how smoothly things could go when cooperating with a fellow pro hero, especially one as skilled as Recall. She'd have to make sure she didn't disappoint either. With a dozen more foes attempting to get past her Mai more than had the opportunity to prove herself. Channeling her quirk in bursts along with each strike Mai's arms moved like a flurry of snow. Each hit sent cold into the shrimp-like creatures shells to slow their advance. The first time they struck Mai swatted them all back in turn with palm strikes, punches and sweeping chops. Their second attempt met spearhands precisely striking the spots her quirk had hit before. The cold had caused the shells and the flesh just beneath to harden instead of remaining flexible letting her fingers pierce right through. All twelve of them were dealt with in short order, the sole casualty on their side being the time it'd take Yuki Onna to get the goop off her fingers. It squelched when she parted her fingers. Suppressing a shudder Mai tried to distract herself by focusing on the surroundings instead. "Recall, do you see that too?" Mai asked while nodding her head towards the surface of the water. She was hoping it was just her imagination.
