For an area dedicated to spectating, Antoine garnered a lot of attention. It might have to do with the tattoos littering his body. It was impossible to see him as anything other than a fighter. With the way he carried himself and dismissed those around him — a side-effect of his one-track, focused mind — many sought to prove themselves amongst the crowd. The energy from the upcoming fight was amping them up, too. Antoine’s Japanese was almost nonexistent. He had only recently picked up the language and couldn’t make out the nuances of what people were saying. But through body language, he knew that one wrong move would instigate a fight. The hostility vanished. Heads turned. Antoine found himself following their eyes. If there were something, or someone, drawing their aggro, then it might be the very threat Bernard had warned him of. No, it’s too early…Antoine’s concerns melted away. He let out a deep sigh of relief when he saw a beautiful woman. It shouldn’t have surprised him, considering the dogs he was surrounded by, but it gave him the space he needed to focus on his mission. Ten minutes until shit hits the fan. But she walked up to him. “Name?” Antoine tried his best. But he couldn’t keep up a conversation. Not in Japanese. “Antoine.” She latches onto him. He could only make bits and pieces of what was said, but with the way the man grabbed her ass and promptly hit the floor, he knew his purpose. Cover. Antoine usually avoided this game. He’s not receptive to the flirtatious types. Affection makes him uncomfortable. But seeing how she dropped the man reminded him of who she was — the girl up front. She was strong. Too strong. And she could either be an unexpected ally or the threat he was warned about. “Mine.” Antoine nods. Puts his hands around her hip and eyes everyone else down. Everyone was on edge. The only reprieve was when the fight started. Yuki, the ring girl, was on stage introducing the first round. A big white sign with the number one on it. “Yuki. Is friend.” Antoine said. A gong rings out, and the crowd goes wild. Antoine finds comfort in the noise. It’s easier to hide in plain sight. And it lets him make his gambit. She was strong. And she was too close. Might snap him in half if this went wrong. But he wasn’t weak by any means. If he were to act first, a sucker punch might land him the means to escape backstage. “Has trouble.” The concern is palpable. “Is you trouble?”

The woman reinforced her damaged ice wall, the pseudo-boss sprayed bullets, and the anime protagonist charged forward on orders from a higher-up. Antoine needed to dwindle the numbers before someone got hurt. With how haphazardly the man shot, he’d be the first target. While the ice was a problem, it was a resource. And while the blue protagonist was a threat, they relied on close quarters — they were the least dangerous of the three. Antoine slammed his cue stick against the pool balls. No, he slammed the stanchion against the ice pellets. With a barrier between him and them, he ricocheted the pellets off the sides of the wall and into the neck of the woman and the ear of the man. They fell to the ground, much like the bullets that never reached him. Except one, lodging itself into his shoulder. Crap. For now, there was no blood. Then, finally, there was the unknown threat before him. At this point, he would notice that he had slowed down significantly. The air around him was like quicksand. Antoine’s attention was buying time. But now that two more of the threats were dispatched, he could clean up the mess before him. Antoine slammed his hand against the ice wall and sent rough, asymmetric shrapnel in the man’s direction.

It was a dead end. It didn’t matter how many people he pestered with his broken Japanese. By the time they could understand what he was saying, they had no idea who he was looking for. The picture wasn’t helping him either. Despite Bernard confirming her location, he wouldn’t have sent Antoine here if she weren’t here, no one recognized her. That’s when he saw someone moving to the back. The hair was different; shorter. And she was scantily clad, but it was without a doubt her. By this point, he had two options: one push forward and get to her or see what the hell was happening by the entrance. Antoine glanced over. Yeah, whatever the hell was happening over there was above his pay grade. Some woman was making a fool of security. He almost felt for the guys. After all, he was a security guard, too. And despite being pretty strong in his own right he could recognize power. With the way she threw herself around… it’d be best to avoid getting into a fight with her. “Hey!” Antoine called out. The girl gave him a confused look. She didn’t recognize him. She didn’t have a reason to, either. They were strangers. “Do I know you?” The question popped out of her mouth with no regard for the girl next to her. They were tugging on her, trying to get her backstage. “We’ve got to go, Yuki.” They were nervous. “The fight’s about to start.” “You’re a fighter?” Antoine asked. “LOL! I’m a ring girl.” She winked. “But if you’re a fighter I can put in a good word.” “I’m security.” “Uhm, you’re so not?” Yuki looked at her coworker. “Katerina, is this a newbie?” “I don’t know him at all…” Katerina was nervous as all hell. “I’m security for Bernard. He sent me.” “Oh, I love Bernie!” Yuki blushed. “What does he need?” “He needs you out of here. Now.” “Nope! Gotta job. Talk to you after maybe?” “Yuki, maybe you should listen to him…” Katerina stopped tugging. “It seems serious.” “We gotta go, Kat!” This time Yuki did the pulling. And they went backstage. “Just enjoy the show… what was your name?” “Antoine.” When he moved to get backstage more security showed up. “Right, I…” He sighed. “Where can I watch the fight?” Security pointed to the spectator area.

There wasn’t time for strategy. Life wasn’t a game. This wasn’t a boss with hordes of spawning minions. He wouldn’t get more experience for taking out the leader. And he wouldn’t unlock an achievement for doing things diplomatically. There were lives at stake. These criminals had two choices: run or die. And Antoine was content with either. Antoine jumped onto the ceiling. Planting his feet firmly atop it, he swung down at the man charging underneath. As he passed by, unable to slow himself, his skull collapsed as blood spilled onto the ice sculptor next to him. Perfect. Dropping from the ceiling and taking a horizontal swing at the sculpture, he created various fragments that fell onto the ground. However, a few floated in the air as he aimed. It’s not a cue stick and it’s not a pool ball. But it’ll work. He took a moment to assess the situation. Who would he strike next?

Not only had Antoine taken the minimal damage he had also used minimal energy — the luxury of fighting at a distance. With the decoy nearly out of commission and the heavy hitter reeling from the fight, his responsibility was to help escort them to safety. Dion acted as a guide, and Antoine would act as Jaida’s crutch unless she wished to be carried in entirety. Dion led the way. He knew a place for them to rest. And while he trusted his comrades, he was still paranoid of what was to come. Even the well-intentioned made mistakes. And with how compromised the group was, and the threat of heroes tailing them, Antoine was silent. Then they sat down. “Even without drug abuse,” Antoine began. “If he had lost control… as that.” Everyone knew what the hell they fought. “I don’t know if we would have been strong enough to take him down without killing him. Sometimes it’s what has to be done.” A pause. “Even if it’s something we don’t want,” Antoine continued. “Even if it’s the wrong thing to do.”

There really is a goose…Considering the crazy, fucked up world they lived in, Antoine wasn’t in the business of judging people’s roommates. If anything, he pitied the soul whose quirk turned them into a goose. Or a goose who had the intelligence of a human. How does one find love in such a world? Then again, how do humans find love, even? There’s justification for this belief, but Antoine imagines most people die unloved and alone. “I guess I forgot to mention it.” How does something like that slip your mind? He must have been off his game. Even now, he feels off his game. Maybe it’s the bullet wound. He drops the food off and follows her. It was at times like these that he wished he didn’t have a secret identity. Do you know how much easier it’d be if he transformed, even a little bit, and removed the friction between the bullet and his skin? They would slide out so quickly. “I’ll make due.” Truth be told, he didn’t know what to reach for to bite. So, he awkwardly took nothing and sat there. “Not yet. But I’m working on my Japanese.”

“Mom or Dad?” Antoine didn’t hesitate. He wouldn’t push if she put up walls, either. Maybe she hadn’t moved past it yet. Maybe you never do. “Is that why you moved here?” He looked over at the box of stuff. He’s not really sure he understands her price point. But if Bernard recommended her, finances weren’t a problem. Instead, she wanted a burger or some other memento or trinket to play with. Megumi seems the type to like puzzles. But that could just remind her of work. It was future Antoine’s problem. Right now, he knew what to get her. When that well runs dry, then… he’ll have to start thinking. There were a few offers on the table. He could ask about her cousin. The goose, too. But were either of these people someone to trust? Someone to work with? As long as he was undercover it was best to keep an arm’s distance. “Bernard’s on a budget. Won’t be working with anyone else for now.”

The stranger jumped into action. Introductions weren’t necessary. No, it was more accurate to say introductions were impossible. With how high risk the creature was, they needed to act. And the stranger did just that. She created two tendrils. Of what? He couldn’t really tell. Considering her exposed back, he assumed fabric manipulation. But if that were the case then why not carry additional fabric? The outfit may have provided specific protections while also acting as a resource. And it with how they plunged one of the tendrils into the pink cube, they seemed far more resilient than the average thread. Antoine slams his cue stick against a pool ball, launching toward the exit point of the cube. The impact would not only create an opening but would have reduced friction allowing the vehicle to slide out of the monster. There were still people scattered about but it was difficult to ignore a man in the corner, handshaking, holding a phone that he had come across before. You called them?“Get them out of the car and to safety,” Antoine said. “I’ll keep the cube busy!” He jumped off the building and into the air — it was solid. He jumped off and onto the wall, sliding down with far more control than one could presume was natural. Considering his form, everyone would know the ability derived from his quirk. But they wouldn’t know what his quirk was yet. And it was perfectly suited to not getting touched by this blob.

Fight club. You know the rule. Don’t talk about it. Despite that, the illegal underground circuit found itself an audience. The club moved from location to location like a carnival. Setting up shop in some abandoned facility, they were only found through word of mouth. See the problem? Everyone knows the rule. But no one follows it. On nights like these, they have a particular location. The Ring. It’s a cage match. Two go in, and one comes out. It’s not to the death. But if someone dies, no one’s complaining. There are rumors that if you manage to take someone’s head off, then you get a bonus. Hasn’t come to fruition yet, but everyone’s waiting for the day it happens. There’s a door. Antoine knocks. A stranger opens the eye slot and demands a password. It’s rotating, so you only get one shot. What they don’t tell you: if you get it wrong, they let you in any way. Before you know it, you’re bound, gagged, and in the middle of the ring. “Himalayan salt.” They open the door. “Keep to your left.” He’s big. Bald. Ugly smile he can’t help but share. “And don’t even look right.” Antoine nods. Today, he’s Antoine. Not Ghouligan. No pool stick. No fighting. He’s here to protect someone, not kill. It was one of Bernard’s jobs. And if word got back that Ghouligan worked for Bernard, then it’d be easy to put two and two together. He pulled a photo out of his pocket. His target. “Where are you?”

Following the events of - This is a robbery!- The Rise of Enki
“You’re late.” Bernard was upset. “Now I have to make a whole new burger.” “Sorry, I was in Tokyo,” Antoine said. “I don’t think Megumi will mind.” “Oh, were you trying that spot I recommended?! I love that place. Also, she deserves better. Don’t you go half-assing around her.” “Never seen you so… protective.” “Well, I know a thing or two about young love and bullet wounds.” “We’re not — stop. Gross.” “Okay, good. Just making sure you’re not crossing any lines. She’s a doctor. Too good for you.” “I get the point.” “Here’s the burger. Tell her I said hello~” Antoine takes the burger. Makes his way over to Megumi, still keeping pressure on the bullet wound. He knew better than to take the bullet out. Then, he knocks on the door. “Hey, it’s me again. Antoine,” He calls out. “I brought lunch?”

What an odd day. For whatever reason, Antoine had woken up with telepathic powers. These very powers allowed him to speak to and understand other people in Japan — almost like a universal, language translator. As far as he knew, these powers were completely unrelated to his quirk. But that didn’t stop him from looking deeper into the prospect. Searching for more information online, he came across various articles on spontaneous power development. They all seemed to fall within a limited scope of abilities, too. Some people gained multiple powers, too. And if people were gaining powers, they were likely abusing them. Antoine put on his garb. He wore his demon mask and pulled on his four-link chain until he revealed the fifth link, transforming into a being a pure force. The black wisps dripped off his body with each step he took into the night. His shift at Bernie’s had ended an hour ago. And with a few leads, he looked to clean up whatever messes he could find.

“Your inability to get the job done isn’t my problem.” There isn’t a drop of malice or frustration in Antoine’s voice. He’s already doing them a favor by giving their viewpoint consideration. To him, interrogating the man is a waste of time. If you can’t get the information in five minutes, it’s not worth having. From what he knew, people were most willing to talk within their final moments. What they were asking for seemed unreasonable. Antoine wasn’t amused. This floating, orb-thing loved to hear itself talk. And he already presumed this was to keep him distracted to buy more time. If it weren’t for the five minutes he promised, then he’d ignore the philosophical pontification of this deranged artifact. “If I see a rotten banana, I pluck it. The same goes for a bad apple. You show me the tree, and I’ll chop it down. But I don’t see a tree. And if you can’t find a trail to it in five minutes, why waste your time? Heroes will get to it first. I go where they won’t, not where they have yet to.” He turns to the woman. “I’m not looking for reassurance. I’m looking to understand.” Antoine looks between the two Pundits, trying to make sense of this quirk. If it even was one. “Because I don’t understand what you’re really after here.”

Antoine works best from a distance. While he’s no pushover in close quarters, few can best him in ranged combat. Given his exceptional perception, he takes the liberty of slowing down. The noises are around the corner. Horrid, gluttonous sounds of something inhuman. If he wants to leverage his surprise, then he needs a better angle of attack. He scales the wall. Unlike others, he doesn’t need footholds. Antoine’s quirk allows him to create enough friction on the walls to walk up them as if he were defying gravity. But that’s not exactly the case. The forces of gravity still apply to the rest of his body. But with his natural affinity for balance and his supernatural strength, he can run up the wall in ways one might not expect. When he reaches the top of the roof, there’s someone there. They don’t look like a hero. They’re in a disguise. And if they’re running toward this sound, then they’re likely here to help. He’s ready to put them down if they’re in control of the best but from this distance it was unlikely. Antoine put his finger up towards his mouth. Shh. Then, he motions them over, so they can both look down at the beast below. A pink, gelatinous cube is terrorizing the area. Within its confines is a car. Within that car, people. And if you were to look at the trail of mucus behind it, you’d see its acidic effects destroying everything it comes into contact with. They only had seconds to act.

The process continued. Fortunately, they moved on to something tolerable. It was still uncomfortable but felt oddly familiar, almost like he was getting tattooed again. Speaking of, he should look into his next set here in Japan. At this point, he’d been here long enough to get a memento. Settling on what will be difficult though. There ain’t a chance in hell he’s getting one of Bernie’s Burgers. “Family,” Antoine applied the icepack to the back of his neck. “My father recently passed. I’m here to tell my brother.” Megumi did good work. If he planned on returning, he’d give some information to keep his stay plausible. Sometimes sharing intimate information gives the illusion of honesty. And Antoine thrived in the unspoken. “Is this a connection?” He asked. To him, life had been transactional. When the neighbors watched him, they charged his father. They knew he was broke so they used his services. He was kind of a handyman and did good work. Could have had a great career and done a lot of good for their community if he hadn’t fallen victim to his vices. And if those vices didn’t cost him his life. “Because I’ll be here pretty frequently.” He quickly added. “Bernie did say you were the best. And if I should listen to Bernie, then…”

The hell is that one talking about?Antoine wasn’t one for ego. His looks might have intimidated most, but there were other monsters in the world. Larger, more terrifying ones. And some have confronted and bested these monsters. To presume himself powerful was a mistake. To presume others thought of him that way was a mistake, too. To become attached to the idea of strength was futile. If the man’s looks weren’t enough, then it was how he carried himself that was truly alarming. They knew they’d survive. Yet they did not carry themselves like a warrior or a noble or some kind of deluded god. The rest, however, responded as most do — with violence. They did not understand the position they were in. And it was in Antoine’s best interest to show them the gravity of the situation. If any of them could redeem themselves, he’d gladly accept them. Bullets rained on him. Until they didn’t. They all slowed down, coming to a halt, until they eventually fell onto the ground, immobile. He couldn’t keep this up for the entirety of the fight, but he made his bluff… a monster immune to bullets. “This is your final warning.”
