They weren’t wrong. Antoine had already given up his right to kill for meager earnings. He was under the false impression that he’d be leaving within the week — a delusion that he still held close to his chest. For now, he thought it more important to satiate his curiosities, whether it came from a slick-talking businessman or a stranger who shared his tongue. There were lessons to be learned, things he could take back to the Caribbean. A new perspective was valuable and could lead him down one of two paths. He might find himself in awe of never-considered possibilities or reaffirm his preexisting, foundational beliefs. Japan was more interesting than he’d had given it credit for. And even if it weren’t for the prospect of meeting his brother, he was grateful to have visited. Not that he’d ever come back to the island. His homeland was more than enough. “The roof it is.” Antoine took his leave and disappeared into the wide, spacious halls. “Goodbye, Tanjiro Yamamoto”

Sirens. There were always sirens. Police were on the way. Even worse? Heroes. It was a matter of time before they swarmed the area in their childish costumes. Then the paparazzi would follow. It was a job. Someone had to do it. But the fact a certain type often found themselves in that position didn’t escape him. The kind of self-centered, attention-seeking child who sought the coattails of another, brighter star. Depressing, really. With that, he departed. There wasn’t time to exchange contact information. The heroes weren’t here yet but he could feel the slug coalesce at the back of his throat. It wriggled as it crawled its way up, ready to free itself from its cage. It was best kept secret. A creature that helped him communicate in Japan until he picked up the language himself. It doubled as an extra layer of protection from his civilian identity. But it got in the way of introductions — whoever this person was, and however extreme they may be, they might be another ally amid the war. 'Til next time.

“It’s a difference in perspective,” Antoine knew people who refused to kill. He knew people who would rather die than stain their hands with blood — he still remembers how warm their dead bodies were when he found them. “Some people don’t have lines. All life is sacred.” In a world of extremes, it was important to take every ideal into consideration. Those very ideals might be the death of you. A warranted one in Antoine’s line of work. “Or meaningless.” He was done stating the obvious. Shion had given him enough. “Kill time,” He mused back. “Or me — if you could.” How would one fair with salt in their wounds? A violent outburst? Even if Shion struck, Antoine was ready. The distance between them was nothing more than an illusion. In an instant, a few inches could be an infinity with motion set to zero. “There’s a system in place. There’s always a system in place,” Antoine began. “As long as there are people, there will be hierarchies and systems and bureaucracy. And if there are systems, there are people who will exploit that system. In doing so, they cannot be impugned.” “The lawyer made a career of freeing the guilty. They indulged in getting away with it. They didn’t care about second chances, they didn’t care about justice. They did it because they could.” Antoine paused. “So I killed him. Because the world will be better off without him.”

A community type? As communal as his home country was, he felt more at home in the United States. Despite the fact, he had never been to the USA. Maybe it had to do with growing up an only child — emphasis on growing up, considering the recent news. Or maybe being a latchkey kid with a half-present father, bless his soul, adapted him to solitude. Company was nice. He enjoyed speaking to people. Searched it out, even. But he never made the mistake of rooting himself anywhere for too long. People were finicky. You never know when they’ll leave. “I think I’m all set,” Antoine stood up and stretched himself out. He’d be sore for a bit but he could feel the difference in her work. “I have to get back to work.” So she doesn’t know the full story. Bernie’s regulars kept him afloat but there was more to it than that. There were underground, back alley deals that kept his restaurant suspiciously safe from various criminal organizations. Only a few strays ever caused a ruckus. Or she’s lying. But he didn’t need to trust her. Not fully. Just enough to get himself healed. And with her performance, she set the bar pretty damn high. “Thanks for everything.”

Delusional. Shion knew nothing of the world. And worse, they knew nothing of themselves. They desperately clung to anything and anyone in hopes of orienting themselves. Their dependence on the external world would be their downfall. If Antoine’s soul were a few shades, tonight might have been the night he finished the job. Instead, he saw a prospect — potential. It was a conversation. Nothing more than a few words between strangers. But Antoine would be lying if he didn’t give strangers their due credit. It was strangers that made him the man he was… for better or worse. Finally, it was his turn to pass the torch. With the people he’s killed, he’s altered countless lives but none of which with conversation alone. “I have a line,” Antoine said. “When people cross it, I do what needs to be done. Even if I don’t want to. Even if I don’t like it.” Make no mistake. If Shion had crossed his line, it’d be the end of him, too. “But these are my morals, my beliefs.” The air was still. “If killing is never justified,” Shion would not dodge the question. He may not have to answer Antoine, but he’d have to answer himself. Eventually. “Then does my answer matter?”

Time was limited. Antoine had spent enough of his indulging in conversation. And he was indulging. In different circumstances, Antoine would have made his decision and let them deal with the consequences. He would have dealt with the repercussions, too, if he had bit off more than he should have. That was the way the world worked. You live and die by your ideals. But he wasn’t in Japan for his ideals. This wasn’t his country. These weren’t his people to save. Not at the cost of his brother. He’d be lying if he weren’t annoyed by the deconstruction of the metaphor. He’d also be lying if he weren’t interested in what they were trying to do. What was their goal? What were they trying to accomplish? What did they really want? “I’ve had a change of heart,” Antoine said. “You can have as much time with him as you want. But I’m interested in seeing where you go from here.” If one thing were true, he was compromising their mission with his presence alone. The man thought himself dead. What work could they do with him there? 5 minutes? 5 hours? None of it made a difference until he was gone. “Three days.” He continues. “We come back to the area and you catch me up to speed. I’ll shadow you from then on. I want to see how you handle things in this country. I want to see why you’re here of all places.” “If that works for you, I’ll be on my way,” Antoine steps away, back turned. “Name’s Ghouligan.”

“Find out what?” It was a rhetorical question. Antoine wasn’t expecting an answer. And even if he were, there wasn’t a large enough gap for Shion to start speaking. “If he deserved it?” Apparently, being beaten with an inch of his life wasn’t enough for Shion. Did he have a death wish? A higher calling, perhaps? The frustration was palpable. If it weren’t for his features or lack thereof, then it would have been written all over his face. Despite this, Antoine understood. Not too long ago, he was young and looking for answers, too. But there were some answers you could only hear from your own mouth. It was a lesson he learned too late in life — one that came with the death of his father. “Tell me,” This wasn’t about him anymore. If the stranger wanted answers, then Antoine would do for Shion what he wished would have been done for him. “When is it okay to kill?” Until Antoine understood, he could never satisfy Shion’s questions. And until Shion understood himself, he would never be satisfied with the answers. And if it was never okay, then why ask in the first place? If it was never permissible, then why was Shion here?

“I’m just visiting the country,” Antoine replied in fluent English, but there was a noticeable Spanish accent. “Don’t plan on staying long.” At this point, that was a lie. Antoine made the trip here to visit his brother Emile. Amid his journey, he found himself tangled in other people’s lives. First was Bernard, his boss. The man who hired him as security at Bernie’s Burgers. And then there was the budding underground network for vigilantes. He’d need help getting it off the ground, but things seemed promising. If Yoko thought his Japanese was subpar now, she should have seen him a month ago. “I don’t even know her,” He continued in English. “She’s my boss’ niece.” That wasn’t entirely true, either. But how believable was the actual story? Someone called in a favor, and my boss complied because he loves leverage. He has no personal stakes in this girl, but his partner does — because the partner is the uncle. “You seem like the good kind of trouble,” Antoine was hedging his bets. While uncomfortable with the concept affection, he was only human. Now that they shared a language, and were able to talk through what was happening, he found himself enjoying the company. Here’s to the payoff. “But we have ten minutes before the bad kind gets here. And when they do…” Antoine made sure no one was listening. He took in more of the world than one might expect. You might not notice his darting eyes as he hid them between each blink. “People will get hurt.” He sighed. “I’ve gotta get her outta here.” The ball’s in her court. Even if Yoko with them, she might let the two escape? Antoine didn’t want everyone else here to get hurt but he had his priorities. And he could circle back once Yuki was safe. But that’s still an assumption. Yoko’s arms were already around him. He might be a dead man walking.

“I won’t say a word,” Antoine said. “Ghouligan.” Despite their comradery, he still kept them at an arm’s distance. It was important to keep his identity secret. If he were to compromise his brother’s well-being before meeting him, then he’d never forgive himself. It was the only reason in Japan. Everything else — his new job, his new “friends” — were happenstance. “I don’t know how long I’ll be in Japan, but I’ll keep in touch.” He continued. “And if you need me, just ask around. Word will get back to me.” Antoine had no guarantee that would happen. But he didn’t have a way to communicate with people in this country yet. After his conversation with Megumi, having met these two, a few ideas manifested in the back of his mind unbeknownst to him. “I’ll head out first,” Antoine moved out. “If there’s trouble I’ll double back. If I’m not back within ten minutes, then you’re safe to go.” On second thought. “As safe as we’ll ever be doing this kind of work.” Truth be told, his time was running out. The language barrier would return and he wouldn’t be able to share another word with these people for an hour. And with the bubbling in his chest, he knew the slug was ready to crawl out. Another two, three minutes at most before he’d have to spit it out. “Stay safe.” A final goodbye. “I’m glad I met you two.”

Honestly? Antoine thought she’d drop the vehicle onto the cube. A simple, effective way to splat them across the area. With everyone evacuated, it’d be worth the damage if the cube couldn’t reform. But it seemed like she had other, more explosive ideas in that damn head of hers. This wasn’t the first time he’d confront an explosion. Antoine had learned his limits when chasing down a cybernetic, baby thief. Yeah, it was complicated. But what wasn’t complicated was whatever protocol caused them to self-destruct upon failure. Antoine pushed himself. He really pushed himself. And even then, he almost met his fateful end. If it weren’t for Sada’s quirk, he would have died. Or worse, been arrested. A reminder: there aren’t people. No one is at risk. Not directly. Not anymore. He didn’t need to create a dome of friction to slow the explosion so people could escape. Antoine needed to worry about himself alone. Using his massive strength to jump upward, he’d cling to the building and launch himself further. Boom. He can still feel the heat. The light is blinding. And his “partner” would notice the smoke bouncing against an invisible barrier. Then, it was over. The cube was gone. There weren’t even guts left. It had evaporated in the heat. They had gotten the job done. More effectively than he would have imagined, too. It’s a shame the other criminal had escaped.

Some were eager, some were hesitant. Whether or not it reflected on how trusting or how needlessly suspicious these people were, it took all kinds. The strength of diversity was perspective. Some saw the opportunity and wished to capitalize while others preferred a more thorough, regimented approach. Both of which were valuable and both of which would be explored in the future. But in the present, with the limited time they had amongst themselves — a Ghouligan’s inability to speak Japanese with his slug — it was important to streamline the discussion. “A reminder that today is about introductions. This warehouse is safe for the moment. But anyone of here could be our downfall,” It was important to acknowledge the risk they were taking. “I’ll take that risk on behalf of everyone. If words get out of a traitor or a mole, I’ll deal with them accordingly.” This wasn’t an ego trip. This wasn’t him thinking himself above the rest. This was a reassurance to those who needed it. He’d take responsibility for any harm that’d follow them out of this warehouse. “There’s been some good ideas, too. An encrypted network, code words and symbols, rotating safe houses, and more. We even have you to thank, Ronin.” He nods in their direction. “I came across a couple of those phones but couldn’t make heads or tails of it. Hoping I can count on a few of you to get the ball rolling.” Antoine scanned the room. There was something off, but it might be his senses going haywire. He’s used to working alone. Comradery was unfamiliar. It might be the tension getting to him. Or maybe it’s the slug forming in his stomach, eager to crawl out once it has solidified. “I’ll be following up with you individually — with anyone who wants to join the network, that is.” He said. “If you don’t, then speak your peace. I’m not interested in wasting anyone’s time.”

Someone had been following him. He was no stranger to being stalked. Even without his newly blessed powers, which seemed to give him a general sense of people’s locations — even those that wished to be hidden — he would have caught the amateur. Despite their best attempts, their footsteps were too loud and their breathing too heavy. If it were anyone but Ghouligan, then they might have stood a chance. Still, he led them further. Deeper into more isolated territories. If this were someone looking for blood, then he wanted to avoid casualties. And more so, wanted to learn who sent them. Ghouligan had been making his mark on Japan. People knew of him now. Even if they didn’t know his name. And with that meant more enemies. He’s left more than enough bodies to be on the receiving end of numerous murder plots. He pulled out his cue stick, and pool ball, and aimed in front of him. There was no reason for his stalker to be concerned. Ghouligan merely saw something they did not. They slammed the two and it ricocheted at incomprehensible angles. If their eyes could follow, they would see it bounce numerous times before the final arc eventually strayed toward them. Then, it’d stop before making contact. There was no impact. But they would feel the air around them tighten. For now, they couldn’t move. Ghouligan made his way toward them, then saw a familiar face. One that he had spared. One who did not share his tongue. But on today of all days, he could get the answers he wanted. “Oh, it’s you.” The thought went straight to their mind. It wasn't either of their primary languages but a third, unknown language they would both understand. The air softened. Shion could move again, free to his heart’s content. Antoine grabbed the pool ball and pocketed it. “Why are you here?”

If this acidic polygon were able to dismantle cars, then his pool balls would prove useless, too. In the same vein, if the creature could never touch him, then Antoine would be safe from its attacks. This was a stalemate — a war of attrition. But unlike the cube, Antoine had a competent ally. From a glance, he could see the fear in the man who called this monster. Their hands were shaking. And when Antoine made eye contact, they ran. “I’ll have to chase him later.” He said aloud, fluent in Japanese. He had ten minutes before he lost his tongue, so he made the most of it. “I don’t suppose you can speak by any chance?” No response. “Didn’t think so. Not in that form.” Antoine continued to speak. “But you can understand me. So, I wonder… is this a transformation or a mutation.” He picked up his cue stick and kicked up two rocks that would float midair as they descended in front of him. “And if it’s the latter, would you like me to put you out of your misery?” It didn’t like that. As it let out a horrifying, gelatinous screech Antoine shot the rock at the edge of its… feet. Right, no feet. But there was a point where it made contact with the ground. The rock broke through and remained intact. And when the cube tried to move, it couldn’t. It was stuck there, immobile. “I don’t know if you can control the level of your acidity, but the edges of your form are less potent than your center. If not, you would have dug yourself into the mantle of the Earth and died by now.” The creature growled as Antoine continued. “I cannot touch you. But I can stop you from touching. See that rock?” It tilts its top down. “It’s pinned you against the ground. You’ll never move again.” A bluff. Antoine simply used it as a catalyst for his quirk. By extending non-friction from the rock, the ground on the cube stood upon could not be gripped. It would forever try to move and remain immobile. “Now, look up.”
