The bandages on her are still tight as ever, the cuts and braises on her arms layering over her scars are ones that burn more than the others on her body, because she's training as hard as she can whilst counting down the seconds until that inevitable fight for her sister comes. It hurts, but the knowledge of her sister hurts more than any wound anyone could give her right now— even as her gauze-wrapped fists hit the metal wall she's wailing on for the umpteenth time, finally stopping and resting her forehead against it, she's gritting her teeth in anger.[break][break]
She's on house arrest- or, campus arrest. It's either that or thinking that angers her the most.[break][break]
The whir of wind in her ears made her stop thinking, thankfully. Something brushed behind her, not too far away, but too quick to see what it was. If anything, it was a welcome distraction to her current vehement pondering, so Kaida rounded the corner to see where the object came from, previously flattened ears upon her head perking once she saw a small gaggle of students gathered around each other, concern evident in their voices. It's Freja and Kei, and Kaida briefly recognises Sumi from that yacht party she had the misfortune of attending.[break][break]
Mildly curious, Kaida doesn't approach, only taking action to lean against the wall and watch them from a distance. Something worrying seemed to be happening, but after rumours of her arrest spread, she hardly wanted to interact with any student at present.

The girl had absolutely no fear of her.[break][break]

Even as Kaida crouched down to be eye-level with this crimson-haired wonder, with frost raising from her lip, the girl held only curiousity and wonderment in her eyes, even going as far as to raise a hand to her snout. Usually she would have bristled, snapped at anyone who came close to get away, tell them to not come closer, growl, roar, and screech all at once to just leave her alone and let her have her peace of mind. She didn't feel it here, not those red-hot emotions that made her think of herself as anything but a monster. The girl's hand came closer, so close she could almost feel the electricity in the air between them.[break][break]
The first dart hit her neck.[break][break]
Kaida reared back with an ear-shattering roar, all dormant and dozing birds in the nearby trees taking flight in fright and fish at the surface of the river's water darting back underneath to safety. Something— someone had shot her in the neck, there's a muzzle flash in the treeline she didn't see before. By the time she's trying to gather her surroundings, two more hit her in the shoulder, causing her to shriek out again, thrashing wildly and her tail splitting a nearby tree in half. She stumbled backwards, feeling the surging sensation of sleep pull at her eyes again, only this time it's not sleep deprivation pulling at her heart, it's drugs, tranquilising darts that are forcing her into her inevitable slumber.[break][break]
She stumbled backwards away from the girl in her daze, having half the mind to not get her caught up in whoever the hell had dared to attack her so cowardly out of the blue like this, and in her stupor something wrapped itself around her horns, dragging her to the side. The dragoness whipped around to face the man with wires in his hands, pulling her head towards him, ready to snap when another wrapped itself around her throat.[break][break]
There's people, a group of people, and they're trying to hunt her— no, trap her.[break][break]
"Its legs! Go for its legs!" Someone shouted.[break][break]
With the wire choking her, she can't breathe at the men surrounding her. Some of them even approach the girl, and Kaida weakly snarled in protest, pulling back a talon to slam down upon them, but she staggered, the effects from the darts in her bloodstream taking effect.[break][break]

From Kaida's limited knowledge, it appeared that the girl was almost talking like a messenger from the heavens— she had people flee from her draconic form in fear, or shout at her in anger, but never in such awe like she seemed to possess, whether it came from a place of fear or not. It was incredibly confusing, and quite possibly the first time that it had ever happened, which made her even more intrigued in this wayward soul that happened upon her. Perhaps, she was a hunter, or simply one of those ancient peoples called "mountain men" that roamed the wild in search of solace away from society?[break][break]
Either way, Kaida knew she was likely to bring no harm.[break][break]
For now, the voice in her head was oddly lulled to sleep, silent for the time being as she turned around fully to approach the girl. Though as she took her first steps forwards to get a closer look, she stuttered. [break][break]

Not once in her life had she expected to be called that. Monstrous. Beastly. Terrifying. Abomination. Demon. The actual, literal Devil, by most of her family members. But beautiful? The tranquil environment is getting to her. She had intended on meditating but the harsh sensation of sleep deprivation is making her eyes hurt and her head droop, her chin almost hitting the ground twice in a row. Kaida had only gotten an hour of rest last night— maybe two, considering her state of lucidity, and how her usually consistent thoughts are jumbled. The dragoness reared her head and shook it, briefly thinking about dunking her head into the icy-cold water to wake herself up. Yeah, maybe that would work.[break][break]
A sudden sound snapped in her ears. Suddenly she doesn't feel so tired.[break][break]
Kaida inhaled, the sound draconic and frost racking her throat as she prepared to possibly blast whatever might have chosen to come after her, human or not. A flash of red flickered in the edge of her vision as she searched the edges of the clearing, cold eyes eventually landing on a figure. It's a person— no, a girl. Young. She looked as equally startled as Kaida felt. Given the panic the girl presented, the dragoness assumed her to not be a threat, simply staring in her direction and letting the ice within her mouth die back down. Instead, her ears perked with curiousity at her presence.[break][break]
It was unusual to see anyone else this far out. Perhaps, she was a hiker? She wasn't dressed like one, however— a peculiar sight Kaida never did see to be dressed like the girl was, in almost foreign robes with no sign of typical factory-type materials. Who was she?

It's quiet.[break][break]
The gentle lull of water against the riverbank as well as the faraway birdsong echoing throughout the valley is the only thing that kept Kaida company as she landed in a clearing with the earth shuddering beneath her weight, the sand beneath her talons shifting as she circled to discern where she was. It was a rare occasion where she had nothing going on in her life— she couldn't attend class, because she was on house arrest, unlike now where she was permitted off campus for some fresh air, and she was glad that the faculty had some lick of sense. Her occupation at the shrine was up in the air. She didn't want to be on campus either, with the burning stares of her fellow students, and the sudden existence of Koharu sagged her shoulders. It hurt more than the injuries that riddled her body after her fight with Ichiro.[break][break]
In the mountains, away from everything, with no one in sight. She hardly thought anyone would be out here, far from any worn-down hiking path— the nearest one was two miles off. With that knowledge in mind, a heavy sigh escaped the dragoness' nostrils as she tucked her wings in, trudging over to the nearby stream to stare at her reflection that danced in the water.[break][break]
A monstrous face stared back. Sharp teeth curled over a perpetually frowning lip, with roughened horns and jet black fur, and piercing icy-amber eyes.[break][break]
Before she knew it, she had angrily slapped the water upon seeing herself, growling under her breath. Looking at her dragon's self reminded her of that beast in her head— a soulless entity with only carnage in mind. She didn't want to see herself like that, but as time went on more and more, it was getting harder to deny the truth. Kaida had come out here in the first place to train herself to get used to that voice, hadn't she?[break][break]

What was her favourite food? Did she have any hobbies, or was she simply just locked away in that castle like a princess, guarded by a dragon?[break][break] If Kaida is correct in her assumptions, Koharu was born to replace her. That means she's only around five years old. Just barely a foot stepped into the world.[break][break] "You're thinking about her again, aren't you?"[break][break] Kenzou's words snapped Kaida from her daze, making her look away from the sheer white dove that had perched on the windowsill of her mentor's office. By the time she looked back, it's gone. "Why wouldn't I be?" [break][break] "Because I want you to stop thinking, and start acting with that stormy brain of yours that's always filled with bad thoughts," Kenzou slapped his folder on Kaida's head as he passed by her, making her growl. "you'll cloud up the whole building. And we don't want any negative thoughts for the meeting today, do we?"[break][break] Her gaze lowered. "I suppose not."[break][break] Kenzou's smile is wistful. "Come on, Kaida. This is something positive. The government and Hero Association is finally making a sanctioned move on your family, and less people, including your sister, will suffer for it."[break][break] Kaida looked up at him as Kenzou turned his back to her, gathering up his script for the meeting. There's still numerous bandages on his form— he only woke up from his coma fully about two weeks ago, a month after the Mikurajima incident, where he suffered a near-fatal injury by one of Kaida's brothers, Katsuro. But despite glaring death in the eye, he's still willingly putting his life on the line to save Koharu, and help the public. What did the public ever do for him? Kaida looked down at her own bandaged hand, injuries from a week ago still sustained on her body. The public never did anything for her.[break][break] "It's time to start looking forward, Kaida. For your own sake. You have someone else to save now."[break][break] "Yeah, it's not just about you, ya know?" Detective Luki's voice shrilled through the air as he flung open the office door. Kaida still hasn't forgiven him for berating her and Jun at the interrogation. "It's about everyone this time, including your lil' sis! Makes me shiver in my boots, wondering what's happening to her." Luki made a dismal effort at a sad face. "Anyway, doors are open now and everyone's showing up to the Agency. Come down to the meeting room when you're ready. Superintendent Aoshima is here too."[break][break] When Kenzou looked back to Kaida, her gaze was on the window again, before she stood with a sigh and exited the office with Luki and Kenzou in tow. Time to face the future, she supposed. "it didn't matter to me what they were doing then... I couldn't stop thinking about her, this little kid who I'm related to who I've never met, and what they're putting her through. Someone like that — a life over before it ever began — ... it angered me." She sighed. "It's my fault, no matter what I say. I had just meant to get information and leave. That was all. He held out his hand for Kaida to shake.[break][break] She's suspicious. He might have a quirk she's not aware of and use it to his advantage. She doesn't shake his hand. "Likewise." Kaida said evenly.[break][break] His smile is a little too wide for her liking. "All good if I ask ya kids a couple questions? That's cool, right?" Luki asked. [break][break] "Do what you want." Kaida replied begrudgingly, folding her arms. [break][break] "Great! So, Kaida..." Luki pulled out three manila files and laid them out on the table. He opened the two with Kaida and Jun's names on them. "Kaida Ikarashi. Exiled descendant of the notorious crime syndicate, the Ikarashi Clan, twenty-two years old and currently a fourth-year hero studies student at UAU. Occasionally volunteers at Kashiwa Shrine." He turned to Jun. "Junsuina Kanjo. Also a second-year heroes student at UAU. Employed at Rising Phoenix. Was involved in an incident on Stryker Island in high school where eight people died and a dozen others wounded." He smiled again as he looked at both of them.[break][break] "Junsuina Kanjo; convicted of one count of breaking and entering, one count of aggravated assault, and one count of destruction of private property." The Kitsune's words rung in her ears. They had been doing that non-stop ever since she came from the drydock to here; the National Police Agency's dull silence would have gotten to her if she hadn't been thinking so much. Her circling thoughts eventually lead her back to Iphigenia, the only reason why her and Jun aren't locked up in jail right now. If it hadn't been for her teacher, she would shudder to think what would have happened to her within prison. She might have been dead within the month. [break][break]
Ultimately, Iphigenia had saved them both, for now. They were taken into custody and placed in house arrest at UAU until the time came for personal interview and investigation as to why they were present at the drydock, where they would ultimately receive their verdict on whether to go to trial or not. Kaida wasn't hopeful. Life hadn't been on her side once since she was born.[break][break]
Her fingers stop twirling the knife in her hand, the dagger which Iphigenia had handed to her once she deemed it irrelevant to the investigation. It's a tanto of simple design, apart from the small dragon carved into the metal beneath the pommel. It was a gift from Kaida to her sister, Kasumi, for one of her birthdays. [break][break]
Kasumi has not made an appearance once publicly since Kaida's estrangement. Not once. There has been absolutely zero sightings in the past five years of the second-in-command of the Ikarashi Clan, almost as if she were a phantom, a ghost. Kaida had taken to Kasumi as simply dropping off the face of the earth, maybe even dead. But what if she was masquerading as someone else? What if...?[break][break]
No, that's impossible. They loved each other— Kasumi was Kaida's only salvation during her childhood, her singular truth. There's no way she would cause Kaida that much confusion, that much pain. The Kitsune was gifted that dagger, or stole it from Kasumi...[break][break]
Kaida sighed loudly, slamming down the dagger on the table she was seated at, throwing her head into her hands. Her voice echoes around the interrogation room as she side-eyed the one-way window that no doubt the guards were peering through. Kaida then looked at Jun from across the table, feeling morbid. Jun didn't have any business in this. She had got caught up in it— in it, in everything, in her mess. She didn't deserve to go to prison because of her. If anything, Kaida would shoulder all the blame. Everything that happened that night was because of her, anyway.[break][break]
Any second now, they would be questioned. She wished it would come sooner. She can't bear the silence of her guilt.

His mother? Kaida can't help but think that there's more to Elijah's misforgivings than that. She knew that look on his face— it mirrored her own. She wouldn't pretend to know anything, but there's a certain piety between kindred spirits like them, people who had been through far too much in life before they were ever thrown a single bone. It almost saddened her— their livelihoods were over before they ever really began.[break][break]
Her? She hasn't lost anyone in her family, although for a certain few she wished she had. She almost wanted to say she had lost her own life, but mentioning something as morbid as that may have scared Elijah off with a few red flags on his tail. She shook her head. "No one. I don't have a family, as far as I'm concerned." She said.[break][break]
She doesn't say anything after that, only watching Makoto move around and hand out more candy to anyone in her path, including the adults, who look mildly confused at her actions. When Kaida had first met the teenager, her actions and words had been far too sweet for her liking, as if she were gazing upon the very embodiment of childhood wonder, the exact opposite of her bloodied self. The more she stayed around Makoto, she more she felt as if she were going to taint her presence— but over her time at the shrine, Kaida had grown used to her presence.[break][break]
Before she realised it, Makoto was standing in front of her, shadowing the sun with a small smile. Even her sunniness is shaded by today.[break][break]
"Hold up your hands," she commanded, and Kaida complied. Makoto sprinkled an item into Kaida's hands— konpeito candy. Kaida looked up at Makoto wryly. The shrinemaiden shrugged. "don't look at me like that! You're like a dark cloud that's about to rain."[break][break]
Makoto then moved to Elijah, telling him to do the same. If he complied, he would see that Makoto had given him a dozen pieces of chewy mango candy. "Today might feel a little worse than others. You're allowed to feel sad. But after tasting this candy, you'll find that the bitterness of today has a sweet aftertaste." Makoto said knowingly, before moving away to another group of people.[break][break]
Kaida let the silence lay for a few moments, raising a piece of candy to her mouth. "She's too kind for her own good sometimes." The dragoness chewed and closed her eyes once more, savouring the sweet aftertaste.

He wasn't even real— an illusion, and it still had the audacity to try and stir Jun's anger. But the more and more he droned on, Kaida realised he was biding time as a distraction for another attack, and the dragoness roared out in protest as she jumped for her best friend, attempting to land in front of the second-year as she sprayed ceaseless walls of ice to barricade them. But with the earth shattering beneath them, she realised it wouldn't be enough to hold. Without a second thought, Kaida whipped around and flung her wings around Jun.[break][break]
Amidst the explosion deafening her and leaving her ears ringing, something within her broke. She didn't know what it was— a rib, her collarbone, something in her forearm, it didn't matter. Blood blinded her right eye as she shifted, pillars of frost falling from her back as she rose up with a snarl, wincing, grimacing and growling in pain all at once. Adrenaline had served her well so far, but sooner or later it was going to teeter off.[break][break]
Both Kaida's and Jun's efforts seemed to have paid off, as Jun's arch nemesis had shattered. The surrounding environment seemed to be getting worse, however. Damage couldn't be afforded to be kept to a minimum. In the distance, through the maze of arctic waste she's made, the Tortured was cocooned safely— an inherent red flag that set alarms off in her head. They needed to get it out of there, and quickly.[break][break]
The dragoness looked at Jun and gestured to the Tortured with a talon. Best if we don't use our quirks for now. She thought.[break][break]
She spread her wings with another grunt, aware of the strike of agony that pounded itself against her chest, leaping forth to meet the Tortured, the talons upon her legs aiming to pierce the cocoon as she leant down to crush it beneath her teeth. Even if something did happen to stop her from killing this bastard, she hoped Jun would be there to shield her.

Ah, that's right. As brittle as her mindset is right now, she can still recognise the face and voice belonging to her teacher's. Her fists clenched— had she come to finally expel Kaida? Not yet, it seemed. They still had their uses for her.[break][break]
As Iphigenia continued to list every commandment and law she couldn't be assed to hear, Kaida glared at the dagger on the ground until her teacher retrieved it. Kaida seized up in response to that, a scowl replacing the haunted expression she had. Where was she going to take it? Even if she hated both parties equally, hero and police force, she would rather the teachers have that dagger whereas the police would confiscate it indefinitely. It was extremely, extremely precious. Her thoughts were still rattled with questions as to why the Kitsune would have it in their possession.[break][break]
A wary, cautious look overtook the scowl on Kaida's face as Iphigenia placed a hand on her forehead and spoke to her. As much as she wanted to deny it, there wasn't any getting out of this without her help.[break][break]
The head officer nods in response to Iphigenia's proposal. "Very well. They will be taken into your custody— for the time being. But they must still eventually be questioned on behalf of the N.P.A." He looked at Kaida, then to Jun. "Wildcards in public areas will not be tolerated, villain or hero."[break][break]
Kaida doesn't respond to that, gaze cast to the ground.[break][break]
The dragoness is eventually shoved to her feet once more, growling in response but nonetheless going along with the tactical unit who had taken hold of her. The blare of the floodlight from the helicopter outlines the reporters standing in the aircraft, no doubt broadcasting current events. She's really fucked up now. There might not be any coming back from it. As much as she didn't care about anyone else talking about her with their loathsome whispers, UAU— it's not a safe place for her anymore.[break][break]
Her ears flatten as she's pushed into the riot van, several other guards following suit. "We'll transfer her to UAU on our behalf. There, you can do as you wish until it is time for her questioning." The head officer said to Iphigenia.[break][break]
The van lurched as the convoy started to retreat from the shipyard, Kaida staring out at the back window at the destruction she had caused. A few of them stay behind to investigate and confiscate the weapons her brothers had left behind, and to deal with the shipwreck. It should have taught her a lesson. It should have taught her to stay in line. It should have taught her to not cause anymore trouble.[break][break]
But it doesn't.[break][break]

It only makes her angrier.
