Leveraging as many connections as she could, Iphi was set up in a remote facility with some of the most advanced equipment. She was there because she wanted to conduct some live research on recreating the methods in which quirks operated and making support equipment for those like herself with less of a ‘traditional’ quirk. Sure, there had been plenty of research into the application of equipment to facilitate quirk usage with heroes and villains popping up over the last few decades with a wide variety of quirks, some similar to what one would expect from a comic book superhero and others swung wildly in either direction from being very mundane to completely uncontrollable. She even knew some people personally who were actively researching the potential to extract the quirk factor to see if it could be applied to other people or even inanimate things! Truly fascinating stuff.[break][break]

The idea to conduct this study in this originated from a question posed by a student in a class she was subbing. ‘Why can’t we make gear that could work like our quirks?” It was truly one of the few times in recent years she was completely caught off guard, having spent a long time sorting through the well of a brain she had for either an example or any studies actively being conducted before ultimately coming up with nothing. Even though she likely hadn’t been the only person to ever think of this she did have the means to put it into practice. So through a combination of the school's network and navigating the hero network she put a word out.[break][break]

Looking for willing test subjects to demonstrate and explain the functions of their quirk in a controlled environment.[break][break]

At the predetermined place deep in the heart of Tokyo, she waited in the control room for anyone who chose to accept this offer, sitting at a console in front of a glass window where the person, once they entered the room and greeted her, would end up to conduct the tests. [break][break]

Farrin O'Rourke, another first-year student at UAU. From his student profile, he was a transplant from Ireland who attended UAU with much to prove. He had one of the most interesting quirks she'd seen, similar to Sebastian and May, which worked as a concept that wasn't even provable by science: Time Manipulation. Iphi was by far the most interested in this quirk out of the recent ones she's studied, as the application of being able to speed up or slow down the passage of time had enormous potential when it came to creating support equipment.

I

t was certainly an interesting opportunity. There was no denying that. One that Farrin couldn't afford to pass up. Professor Pavlina, or "Recall" as she was referred to among hero society, was renowned for her nearly unrivaled intellect. As extensive as UAU's libraries were, they offered little insight into the flow of time. Theoretical physics was, after all, theoretical.

Most of Chronokinesis's current applications revealed themselves shortly after Farrin discovered his quirk at four years old. The developments that followed were examples of precision and intensity. He learned to move faster, and less clumsily, but there were other capabilities that hid at the periphery of the time-turner's mind. Capabilities that grew more and more concerning. Capabilities he wasn't yet ready to share with UAU, but maybe after today, after experiencing the university's most intelligent, and therefore most likely to grasp the nature of his newfound demons, maybe he would have someone he could confide in. 

So, Farrin made his way to the lab at Tokyo's heart. It wasn't hard to find. And Farrin had made it a habit never to arrive late. Time was not a resource he would waste. That came courtesy of his mother, a lesson learned even without his quirk. You didn't waste your own time or that of others. So, eventually, Farrin would make his way inside the unassuming building and was immediately greeted by a series of spotless hallways. A worker in the lobby directed him to his destination and a few seconds later he arrived in Iphi's control room. 

Sanguine eyes moseyed from one side of the room to the glass window, then onto Iphi. "Eh, Professor? Or, erm, Recall?" He asked. Some of the Pro-hero professors preferred their hero names, others were fine with the typical Professor title. Which was he dealing with today? And, more importantly, what would these tests entail? Was he just showing off what he could do? Or were there more practical tests in store for him?

Iphi would rise from her seat and greet Farrin, opting for a handshake instead of a bow as she wasn't sure how familiar or comfortable he was with Japanese customs yet. "Iphi is fine if you prefer first names. Whatever makes you the most comfortable." she smiled before gesturing to the rest of the space. "Welcome! I appreciate you taking the time to participate. This is a study on quirks and their potential application as support equipment." she would open the door to the exam room and step inside, motioning for Farrin to follow. "I'll be behind that glass window monitoring and recording your brain patterns." she would lift the headpiece and the cuffs for his vitals, "and this is for your vital signs." heading out the door, she would sit back on the console, giving him a few minutes to get situated.

She would lean forward and hit a button on the console "Farrin, I'll be using the speakers to communicate with you from this point on. Before we get started with the actual tests, can you tell me as much as you can about your quirk?" she would release the button and lean back only to remember the advice Sadako gave her about being more personable when it came to these tests. "Oh and if there are any questions about your quirk or quirk theory that I can answer, by all means feel free to ask!" picking up her clipboard as she preferred taking manual notes she was trying her very hardest to be patient before she could see this 'Time Manipulation' in action.

lright then, Iphi it is," Farrin said, shaking the professor's hand. Somehow, he doubted the courtesy extended to campus, but that didn't matter at the moment. They weren't on campus. Different stages, different rules. What mattered were the tests they were about to run, how they might benefit the professor, and how they might benefit him. 

"Mhm, glad ta' help. I dun' know how applicable me' quirk would be ta' support gear, but if it can somehow help other heroes out, I'm game." Were there batteries that could store temporal energy? In sifting dreams, it was revealed that mercury could hold a temporal charge for whatever reason, but how useful would that be to anyone who couldn't manipulate time's power? A conundrum left to better minds. 

Farrin fit himself with the headpiece and gloves, hopped a few times out of habit, and to ensure everything was latched down tight, and then followed Iphi into the exam room. While she situated herself back in the control room a moment later, Farrin jabbed the air a few times, shadowboxing. Another habit to occupy still moments. 

The room was a little chilly and devoid of life. Mostly empty. It wasn't unlike the training facility in the Above & Beyond agency. Were stun rounds about to fly his way here too? Iphi's voice was quick to drag his attention back to the here and now.

"Alright, but it's a mouthful," he called back. "So, Chronokinesis is a multifaceted quirk. Its most obvious use I call Temporal Flow n' looks like this," Farrin extended his left hand, palm up, and summoned a small sphere of nearly-translucent emerald energy. His sanguine eyes would burn gold and take the features of clock dials, signifying his use of his quirk's temporal state. "While like this, I can summon a unique form o' energy. Doctors' thought it may be related ta' Cherenkov radiation but were unsure, so I jus' call it temporal energy." He was about to use the word Temporal a whole lot. "These energy fields act as a catalyst that allows me ta' speed things up or slow 'em down. The former is easier than the latter. I do need ta' dictate which property the field will have, and its duration and shape, before I actually summon it. I can also create form-fitting fields around meself n' others but, again, the former is far easier than the latter, which requires intense multitasking since I dun' know where n' how someone else might move next beforehand like I do meself. Anyway, the properties o' me' fields remain in effect even fer' a few seconds after someone or somethin' passes through 'em or after the field collapses as the residual temp energy dissipates."

The sphere above Farrin's hand would dissipate a moment later. Speeding things up really was a lot easier, more like swimming with a rapid river rather than against it, which was what he essentially did while applying temporal deceleration. No need to discuss the "feeling" here though, right? 

"Summonin' a field on someone uncooperative is the most difficult thing, hence why I dun' just try forcin' slow fields on potential enemies. It saps me' incredibly fast like time itself is fightin' back. On the other hand, an acceleration field around meself or an ally is incredibly useful. It's no just movement speed that increasin' but the speed o' signals travelin' through the body, so ta' me it's like the world is movin' slower. Me' reaction time can be incredibly fast. But, in truth, this is also due ta' the other facet o' me quirk, Temporal Resonance. Believe it or no', I can sometimes grab quick glimpses o' the future or other times. This is most prevalent when I sleep or when the adrenaline is pumpin' n' I'm in danger. I'll see split seconds ahead sometimes, or just feel a quick burnin' sensation in me' head that acts as a sort o' warnin'. This coupled wit' temporal acceleration speedin' me body up makes me pretty hard ta' hit." 

Not everybody believed the future sight part, but then he didn't really go peddling that information away. It was usually only small glimpses when he was actively in danger. It could offer visions of parallel times as well, which meant not every instance was accurate to this time. For now, though, he would keep the rest under wraps until he got a better feel for the professor. 

"As fer' me own questions, well, how much yuh' know 'bout theoretical physics in regards ta' time?" He half-laughed, not because he didn't think she would stack up, it's not as though he knew all the much on the theoretical workings of time outside of his quirks insights. It was only that he hadn't met anyone yet who had much to contribute. It was, after all, all theoretical.

If Farrin was observant enough, he would definitely be able to tell that the wheels were turning for Iphi during his explanation. She was writing rapidly on her clipboard while not breaking line of sight with Farrin's display. Time manipulation, like a lot of quirks, was mostly theoretical when it came to applications outside of quirks. Thats why mutations that proved concepts originally thought theoretical were always fascinating and studied extensively. In fact when originally joining UAU she had flagged Farrin's student profile as something to follow and eventually study even outside of this experiment. It greatly helped that his innate or perhaps learned knowledge of his quirk was pretty extensive!

The question he posed at the end of his explanation was more loaded than he may have thought. Iphi had spent a lot of time reading research papers on concepts that were deemed impossible. FTL travel, time manipulation, warping reality or even space itself. There were an ever-growing handful of people who broke through this impossible notion and Farrin was definitely one of them. "More than most, I would guess. It would make a lot of sense if your quirk originated from Chernkov's radiation given form, at least for your ability to speed up time." She would get up from her seat and enter the room he was in and look up at the ceiling a few feet from him, cupping her hands around her mouth. "Whiteboard!" she'd call out as the ceiling split and lower a whiteboard in front of them. "There are a couple of prevailing theories on how to make time travel possible." she would scribble down what resembled a river with several dots scattered throughout "If you think of the flow of time as a river, there are fixed points that are altered by light and gravity. Its why they theorize that time moves slower in a black hole." she would scribble more producing a through line in one direction and one of the opposite color in the other direction. "I'm guessing that you're ability to manipulate cherenkov radiation is where the ability to fast forward things would come from, you're pushing the electrons and protons found in the building blocks of all matter to accelerate to FTL speeds. This means they're effectively escaping the boundary of our established universe's rules, temporarily." Another branch from that arrow would be formed as she drew it, doubling back towards the middle of the 'river'. "When the field stops, it causes a snapback so that the protons and electrons can resume normal acceleration, which is why the effect lingers. If it didn't, the effect would slingshot past the point of relativistic speeds, and you'd be stuck with someone or something bouncing between speeding up and slowing down until it regulated itself. The whiplash would probably kill anything organic."

She would flip the board around and start fresh on the other side, drawing concentric circles in the middle of the board. "As for the slow down effect, there's a reason you can't completely stop the flow of time. You'd be experiencing all the raw elements of the universe at once—no sight, no warmth, nothing at all. More than .02 seconds in that state and you'd essentially kill yourself or anything else caught up in that field." she'd draw arrows between the rings as they pointed outwards. "You might have heard in school that our universe is constantly expanding. In theory, to slow down the passage of time is the same as slowing down universal expansion. This likely means if these circles are showing a rapid play-by-play of every moment to the next..." she would draw a concentric circle next to it where the spaces between the rings were much more wide. "You're basically making the moment of expansion, in that spot, shrink, which alters the perception and state of matter in that space." with that she would cap the marker and step aside to allow him to let that sink in.

"So, as you can see, I'm not that experienced with theoretical physics." she'd smile before moving on to the next phase of the test if he was prepared for it. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a few small sensors that were about the size of marbles. "I would like you to use your quirk on these three. The first apply time acceleration, the second slowing the passage of time, and the third i'd like you to expose it to both one after the other."

arrin crossed his arms, dialing into the coming theorized explanations once Iphi joined him in the examination room again. The river analogy was spot on as far as he could tell. When exploring the temporal expanse, time took the form of a sea comprised entirely of threads. Each thread represented a different timeline. When Farrin sifted while dreaming, he was often thrust into parallel times. Finding his way back could be incredibly difficult. That was until he found his Sada. Sleeping by her side, his dragoness was like a beacon with which he could find his way home. She healed his ailing mind even while they slept. 

"Eh, a quick note on that, one o' me quirk's weaknesses is drastic shifts in gravity. I can acclimate given time, but a sudden n' powerful shift can temporarily alter the effects o' me fields, slow 'em down from their original intended speeds or sometimes cancel the field outright." 

He felt it first when he was seven years old when the old man went psycho and attacked his then-home. Then again, he was tested against alternating gravitational forces when Above & Beyond put him to the test in the training facilities below the agency's tower. Farrin was fairly well-learned in the uses of his quirk due to their effort, and his time attending Hero Prep school before getting into UAU. 

"Yer explanation behind temporal acceleration echoes much o' me' quirk doctors', but I gotta say they hadn't touched on deceleration nearly as much. Limitin' universal expansion in me' fields, no' somethin' they e'er mentioned, or that I e'er considered."  

Of course, he hadn't seen those doctors in nearly eleven years now. After Balor, his father, went villain, Farrin spent much of his life homeless, refusing to be scooped up and placed in the system - or taken back to Ireland by his grandmother. But those were stories impertinent to his current examination. He held his questions for later and focused on three floating sensors. 

"Gotcha," he said, and with a turn of the wrist it was done. Each sphere was encompassed by a field similar to the one he summoned earlier. The first sensor would float around far faster while within the field. The second slowed to a crawl. The third would alternate as Farrin continued to focus on it, creating one new field of the opposite effect as the former field collapsed. 

"I can also summon fields at a microscopic level, n' hyper accelerate or decelerate 'em, far faster or slower than those I create normally. If I summon enough o' 'em, n' line 'em up just beside one another, it can have somethin' o' a tearin' effect if enough make contact wit' a single target." 

Farrin had been testing this new maneuver back in one of UAU's indoor training facilities - where students usually attempted super moves. His was based on his mother's signature attack, Crimson Smash. His was incomplete still though. He could break large chunks of the stone spires away by tearing them apart via this lethal mix of hyper-effective fields, but it seared Farrin's arm as well, and, despite the damage to the stone spires, didn't offer quite enough bang for the buck he paid. His 'super move' was still in development.

Farrin was giving lots of important and detailed information which Iphi was endlessly thankful for. Her assessment being spot on wasn't surprising given that most of the information she had just shared had come from research papers and lectures, it just meant that she hadn't wasted her time diving into that area of physics. "That makes perfect sense given your explanation, I would imagine its more devastating on the acceleration fields. Given Albert Einstein's theory of relativity." a relic of a name and reference but still relevant even today.

She would set down the pen and paper and observe as Farrin began to test his quirk on the sensors. She could have always checked the footage later but it was more important for her to view this in real time; to satiate her endless curiosity there were some things better viewed live. The acceleration and slow-down fields did exactly as he stated, changing the acceleration of the object in either direction while under the field.

"A rip in space-time..." she leaned back, jotting that down "Interesting application. I think for data that's really all we need unless there's something else I can do for you?" Usually, these took longer, but with Farrin being as thorough as he was there wasn't much else he could provide for her. Now, whether she could do the same for him was another story.

I

t was a tempted offer, to ask his questions now and possibly find the answers he was looking for, but he had to get to know the professor Iphi better first. In more timelines he had seen than less, Farrin turned out to be something far from heroic. The opposite actually. There were the rare few exceptions, a few scarce glances he had of times he became someone truly Heroic. Oberon. The real Oberon. But more often than not, the time-turner was a temporal blight on the world. How might she or others react when they find that out? Was it not a hero's duty to apprehend a threat before it could cause any damage? The number of people Farrin could trust had dwindled on the daily. That wasn't likely to stop now. 

"None that I can think o' at the moment, Professor Iphi!" He said, defaulting back to her title again. It was too odd regarding her with such familiarity. She was an authority figure, he was still a student. Still, he appreciated her earlier offer and her insights.

"If I do further down the line though, I'll find yuh' on campus or maybe 'ere if yer' no' too busy! Much appreciated!" 

With that, the fields dissipated and Farrin started toward the exit. The experiment took far less time than he anticipated. Quirk specialists often asked him a thousand other questions, much of which made little sense after he gave his explanation. Is time travel possible? Can you slow the aging process? What are the winning lotto numbers? If Farrin could time travel, who knew how many more infinities might be added to the temporal sea with the changes he would make? And slowed aging? Maybe if they liked living life in slow motion. Lotto numbers? He was just as likely to peep the numbers from some alternate time as his own, plus focusing on something so specific without an attached object didn't usually work out so well. No, at least Iphi didn't waste anyone's time with the nonsense. Straight to the point, that ever precious resource - time.
