arrin waited outside the dorm. Since the start of the semester, he hadn't seen much of Kenta, only on the occasional hero simulation or during class. Life hadn't stopped moving for the time-turner. His days were packed to the brim with training, practice patrols, sparring matches, and classes. His nights? More training. More patrols. It was the only way to distract himself since Sada interned with Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping the wounded worldwide. He occasionally heard from her, but Farrin was left to his own devices otherwise. Namely, allocating a machine-like focus to grind himself into the hero he needed to be. Then, only just a week ago, he and Kenta were finally put together for a practice patrol... which had gone batshit crazy. A courthouse disturbance turned attack on Tokyo. 

Farrin's sanguine stare moved skyward. Similar weather minus the dark storm they were caught in. And still, his mind was on Sada. He missed the flowing pink of her hair and eyes he could lose himself in for hours without end. Her warmth, her presence. Yet, somehow, he had to snap himself out of it. 

With a shake of his head, he returned to the moment. He was leaning against the dormitory, just to the side of the main entrance. Right now, there were other things to do. He told Kenta they would run some drills, maybe do some track running or sparring. The truth - touched with the tinge of deceit. Since that day, the day they tackled the Storm beside Zenkai and those two others- one of which didn't make it, Farrin had meant to meet up with his longtime friend. Today was that day. He needed to know how his sham was doing, so training made the perfect excuse. Hopefully, Kenta was doing alright.

Kenta didn’t even consider how long it was since they spoke with Farrin. Guess they were both swept up by the life in UA Academy…not surprisingly really. The teachers weren’t going easy on them, both academically and in more direct training. Though the gel boy did allow himself a bit more distractions than his friend (at least he assumed so), meeting some new buddies along the way…Tho it has been a while since he spoke to any of the Noblebrights of Freja… pretty much anyone outside of teachers or classes.

He tried to just act like his normal self, and he did mostly a good job…trying not to think about that day… the first patrol he had with Farrin and Zen…the psycho that came in to wreck things…the fight with two other figures they didn’t know…the screams, the pain, the sight of his friends bloodied up…a girl he never really knew simply vaporized in front of him.

The white-haired student shook his head, snapping himself back from the momentary lapse. He didn’t need to think about it now. He was going to train with his friend…and he was just about to reach him beyond the door. He assumed Farrin wouldn’t have spotted him freezing just now…at least he hoped. He went through the main entrance door, dressed in his UA Track suit he said “Hey there…didn’t keep you waiting right?” smiling as usual towards his foreign friend…though to someone who knew Kenta enough, the smile did seem a bit less…bright than normal.

arrin offered a friendly smirk and a nod in kind. "Hey there, me sham! What's the craic?" To most, Farrin's words would amount to nonsense, but he and Kenta had been friends long enough that time-turner's Irish lingo must have been familiar to the gel-boy by now. He was basically asking what was up or how things were going. Not that he really needed to ask. The weight of loss brought Kenta's smile down a notch, and Farrin knew why. Hell, he felt it, too. Stranger or not, it wasn't easy to watch someone die. Especially not when their death meant your life went on. 

"N' not at all. Just got 'ere a few minutes ago. C'mon, let's get to it. We'll start wit' a run," he waved Kenta along, starting a light jog down the pathway that led from the dorm to the training field, where the school's track was. 

"So how've classes been treatin' yuh, lad? Hope yuh've been keepin' up wit' all o' it." 

Farrin had always rocked heroics courses, but for his first semester, he was also doing fairly well in academics. A surprise even to him. Usually, Farrin wasn't much more than a B-grade student in your typical subjects. Math, sciences, and all that. He knew enough to get by, maybe a tad more than most, but he was nothing special in that regard. Now, throw some mock villains at him, and Farrin was aces. His hand-to-hand expertise rivaled that of the school's instructors, courtesy of his training at the Above & Beyond agency. Hopefully, Kenta was finding some similar success, something to lift the lad's spirits since the Elementals' attack.

“The Craic is alright….I think…is that how you respond to that?” he said with a joking tone. While over the years of hanging out with the foreign student, he did start getting some of the terms he used from his mother language, it could be a bit tricky to decipher…though at the moment he knew his friend was asking him how he was doing. Which…was a question he needed to figure out really. However it wasn’t all that good.
Still, he didn’t want to worry Farrin too much as he replied “Sure thing… Fresh air and getting the blood flowing never hurts” before joining his friend on the run. As they ran and Farrin asked him how things were going he said “Well, so far pretty good. Doing fine in practical classes, though some teachers pointed out that my gel sometimes lacks…finesse. Like, I can do a lot of volume, and its effective but sometimes when I do something more precise kind of fumble. Starting to work on that Tho. Been reading up on whips and some heroes that use capture tape in a more advanced way. Normal classes are a bit of a drag, but It could be worse…some of my friends from the dorm are helping me out actually” he said with a slight smile.

Some of the guys he met at the Noblebrights helped him keep his academic scores up to snuff…even if it was bonking him to study when he was being lazy. After a moment he added “I bet things are going well with you…How’s Sada doing? Feel’s like its been ages since I saw her…and…did you talk to Zen maybe?” he asked, his voice wavering a bit. From what he got Farrin was a bit closer to Zen…and well, he was worried about the giant a bit.

 tinge of light in a world growing far too dark as of late. Kenta was finding some new friends of his own to keep him in check and help him out. Academics were a drag, hardly the true diamond Farrin was digging for, but quirk talk perked up his ears. Yeah, UAU asked far more of its students than Hero Prep did. Farrin owed the advanced nature of his quirk not only to his time there but also to Above & Beyond. So, Kenta needed to hold the mold more precisely? That was something the time-turner could help his buddy train with. Later, of course. 

Farrin picked up the pace but still wasn't pushing his powers into super-style speed. It was only a few short moments before they made their way onto the track. Nothing beats a good run. So many people hated cardio, but with proper form it worked the body head to toe. Can't beat that. 

"Well, glad ta' hear yer' keepin' on top o' things e'en if yuh've a few areas that need workin' on. Maybe we'll stop by one o' the trainin' facilities after this, see if we can work on 'em gel techniques!" He started. "As fer' Sada, well, she's been comin' n' goin'. No' the easiest time without her. She's been internin' wit' a group that helps people out worldwide, n' also takin' a few personal trips abroad ta' do some diggin' in familial matters." Farrin would have been right at her side had she let him, but she wanted him to keep training here for his own dream. Distance was a devil that sought to pluck Farrin's heart from his chest. The world was so cold and colorless when his favorite dragon was gone, but what was there to do but keep on going, keep on training, and awaiting her return? 

"As fer' Zenkai," his tone firmed, dropped a few octaves as he recalled the titan's quirk - a sphere of energy and heat of some sort hovering brilliant and bright in the air, "haven't seen 'im since that day." He hadn't seen many of those first few students he started to befriend at UAU. Thea, Robin, and now Zen were absent. Leo had been missing for a spell, but apparently, he was seen back on campus, though Farrin hadn't run into the lad yet. It was all quite odd. 

"How're yuh' doin', really? That was rough. Some real shite we found ourselves in. Yuh' sure yer' okay?"

Kenta managed to keep up with Farrin pretty well, as long as he didn’t turn on the turbo switch, and they both knew the right pace to make sure to feel the run in their muscles but not exhaust themselves as they reached the track. Cardio was ironically the favorite type of exercise for Kenta, he liked running and moving. He mostly got shouted at in wrestling school for not building up some bulk… which was probably fair, though he did have his quirk for more heavy lifting.

He nodded as Farrin replied saying “Yeah, got to keep practicing…you wouldn’t know someone from classes that has like a chain quirk or something?” he asked, trying to find someone who might have weapons similar to how he used his gel. He nodded as he answered his question about Sada while saying “Yeah I miss her too…but every day is getting closer to her coming back right?!” he added as they ran. Sada was a busy bee…and she and Farrin knew something about the funky family business. Guess he was lucky the most he got was chewing out from his dad for doing some dumb stuff when he was younger…

The mood soured a bit after his question “Yeah…same here” he said trying to sound cool, not meeting the large dude since then as well. Though it was clear the voice was more flat than usual. As Farrin asked him he would say “Y-yeah, I’m good…it was rough, and he got in a few good hits in…but we made it, we stopped him…licked our wounds. Even saved a few…bystanders…” he tried to justify in his head…but than he saw it again. The girl he barely met…proofed in front of his eyes. Kenta would stop running, leaning forward, breathing heavily…a lot heavier than usual after running not to long.

 chain quirk user? A reel of faces flashed through Farrin's mind. Freja didn't have a quirk. Well, not exactly. Natsumi could shrink and fly. Miroru manipulated light. Shio had Toto. One Leo could manipulate speed or something of the like, Farrin suspected temporal manipulation of some sort. The other Leo played with shadows. Not that he had seen them for some time, but Thea - no. Robin - no. Zen - definitely no. He mentally thumbed his way through the file drawer. Nothing. Josephine could manipulate her hair, but only minimally so. It was too bad Farrin didn't have a way to contact Peacekeeper. Then there was a thought. 

"Maybe Jun? Junsuina Kanjo- or Mood Ring as the alias she goes by. I dun' know the extent o' her abilities, but she seems ta' be able ta' make a certain number o' constructs. Maybe she has somethin' like chains or whips? Dun' know fer sure, but it's a thought."

Would she even help if approached? That other girl, Emilia, seemed to know her well. Maybe it was just Farrin Jun didn't like? If that was the case, Kenta might stand a chance. He was certainly the more personable between them. 

"Yeah," Farrin sighed in response, thinking of Sada. You would think, but he never knew when she'd return, or if she was okay, or how her day was going. Contact was difficult where she ventured, and every day they spent apart was like another twist of the knife. He sucked it up, though. Breathed in deep and kicked up the pace- only slightly. 

Only to skid to a stop a moment later. Kenta froze up. His breath was heavy, weighed down by a guilt Farrin was far too familiar with. He knew a panic attack when he saw. They watched someone die. A brave girl who was only trying to help. Perished. Took a hit that might have done either of them in. 

Farrin set his hands on Kenta's shoulders. "Oi, hey. Hey, bud. I know. Trust me, I know. Yer not alone, though. I'm 'ere. Not goin' anywhere. Jus' breathe through it." The school recommended therapy. Farrin tried a few times, but what could they say to fix such a loss? To fix any of the things weighing his world these days? He was a firm believer in therapy, but it was a thousand times more difficult trying to sort oneself out than to encourage others, especially when it never seemed to do any good. "Yuh' want me ta' get some help?" He offered, latching down the beasties lurking in his own shadows. "I can be there n' back in a blink, but if not, I understand, too. I'm fine stayin' right 'ere wit' yuh'. Like I said, I won't go anywhere unless yuh' want me to."

Hmm…Farrin’s suggestion did seem like a good idea. He did recall seeing Jun in training exercises, and her quirk was all about creating things out of seemingly thin air. His gel was a bit different since it like, came from him, but he still could shape them freely. He’d need to try and chat with her sometimes… He remained quiet after saying his peace about Sada, as much as he could try and comfort his friend he knew they were head over heels for each other. Not much someone can do to get over that kind of funk.

Besides, even if he had something to say he was too busy trying to keep his shit together a few moments later. Hands on his knees, his entire frame a bit shaky as he breathed heavily, and seemingly just not being able to catch his breath. He knew what to do when he was out of breath…but it still felt like something was crushing his chest. He continued to breathe heavily even after feeling his friend's hands on his shoulders. He listened to him offering to get some help, after which he said “N-nah…don’t, I’m… 'll be fine…” choking in between words. It took a moment but slowly, he managed to regain his breath.

He stood in his hunched position, calming himself a bit as he started to say in a more controlled voice “It all seemed so chill…we were just about to get some food and that…fucking freak showed up…But we were doing everything right, helping civilians before trying to take him down… We trained for this…, I thought, I was ready”

He slowly stood up, his face a bit red, slightly wet bluish streaks of his gel flowing from his eyes ( a side effect of his quirk made him an ugly crier) as he looked at his friend saying “She was right in front of me man! I could have…I could have yanked her away with my gel, or shielded her, or pushed her away…I could have done something…” a pause and a choke, before he turned his head to the side, trying his best to hide the mess on his face.

arrin drew his head back, looking Kenta over. He didn't look fine, but his breath was slowly steadying. So, Farrin let go and backed up a step. The day the Elementals attacked had shaken the nation. Efforts were apparently underway to deter or otherwise respond to attacks of similar scale. Those were tomorrow's endeavors. Today, his friend needed him. 

"Lad, I dun' think any amount o' trainin readies us fer shite like that," he started, letting Kenta vent. When he finished, Farrin continued, "look, Hero Prep, UAU, all da' schools in the world can do their best ta' arm us wit' the tools needed ta' get the job done, but that doesn't make da' job any less horrifyin. The hero industry glamorizes the work, but it's right up der' wit' policin and military work."

To protect and serve in one form or another. It required everything of them. Many didn't appreciate the sacrifices heroes made. Farrin grew up homeless for seven years. He acclimated to loss many years ago and experienced it repeatedly a few times over before moving to Japan.  

"N' armed wit' all this trainin', all dese' years o' hero education, we'll still never be able ta' save e'eryone. There was no savin' her, lad. That black lightning the bastard summoned was far faster than natural lightning. I can't keep up wit' the latter, let alone the former. Neither o' us, nobody, was reachin' her on time." 

A harsh truth, but one Kenta had to accept. He had no sins to absolve. That woman's death was on that lightning freak's hands, not Kenta's. The hurt would never disappear, not entirely. Every time Farrin moseyed on through the city, he thought back to the lives lost, those he failed to save during another recent attack. Operation Babel, not that hero society, or even Farrin, knew it was titled such. The time-turner helped everyone he could get his hands on, but even he couldn't be everywhere at once. They were going to lose people. It came with the territory. And if they couldn't be there for each other through all the shite, who would?

Kenta was calming down, though he still had his face covered in the weird mix of his quirk and tears, a few hiccups here and there. He didn’t feel bad about breaking down in front of Farrin…well, he felt bad about letting it get to him, but if there was anyone he’d want to talk about this it was his friend. As the Irish man spoke Kenta did speak up “I know, I know…and I bet…you know better than anyone about that…” pausing to collect himself a bit more.

After all, Farrin was through some shit in his life. He wasn’t sure how much his friend shared so far but it was enough to build a picture. Part of Kenta…didn’t want to put a bigger burden on his friend. He had enough to worry about as is… Farrin spoke on about the moment, with the villain launching his attack… Rationally he knew there was little they could have done. Maybe Farrin with his time turning but even so… some things were just too fast. After a moment he carried on “I know your right but… God damn it, she was like what, our age? Give or take… And I could only watch that happen…see you and Zenkai banged up…I tried my best to take the guy on, but he was fucking strong…choking the life out of me…” another pause as he remembered the close-quarter scuffle, being choked, trying to counter it right before fire flew at them.

Another deep breath before he spoke on “ I knew this wasn’t going to be easy, but I tried hard, made my quirk stronger, got faster…and the first time we’re kind of on patrol we deal with that. How do we prepare for something like that?!” he voice a bit raised, he young hero seemingly not in such distress but now getting agitated, trying to rationalize the situation in his head. There had to be something he could do better, right?

ogos vs pathos. Logic versus emotion. Nine out of ten times, emotion won out. Humans were still animals, and animals didn't operate on logic, not as often as they liked to think, at least. Farrin couldn't blame Kenta for what he was feeling. If anything, Farrin was the weird one, operating with mechanical efficiency even in the face of death. People weren't supposed to function like that, but he had. In becoming what he was now, he traded away pieces of himself. Pieces that would have stilled a younger Farrin's hands and feet before the self-sacrifice and ultimate death of another. 

Farrin didn't respond at first. Kenta knew his time-turning friend was a street rat who mostly grew up homeless. He also knew Farrin's dad was a murderous villain, one his mother died apprehending. There was plenty of crazy poured into the Farrin pot, and maybe it had been what desensitized him, but it wasn't something to aspire to. Eventually, he would speak up. 

"Yuh' held his attention n' came out the other side, lad. That plays so much a' part in a life n' death scrap. Yer right, I was knocked out cold fer' a few, n' Zen took some licks as well, n' neither o' us nor the feckin' dragon woulda had the time we needed if someone wasn't occupyin' that stormy fucks attention," he started, pausing for a minute in thought before continuing, "It took the efforts o' heroes n' the like ta' take down those other Elementals or whatever they're bein' called. We only had each other, that dragon, which who knows how much experience they had, n' the girl. We've been trainin', sure, but that fecker wasn't armed wit' some run o' the mill quirk. They were strong. Ridiculously strong." 

In all his run-ins with villainy so far, Farrin hadn't encountered any that hit as hard as the storm fecker or had attacks that moved that fast. Ouroboros utilized many pawns and sought to overwhelm Farrin with visions of his fears and his possibilities, but nothing on that level. Not yet, at least. But, in any case, it was shit luck for Kenta to run into something so ferociously powerful on his first real patrol out there. This wasn't something he would just shake off, that was for sure.

There was a bit of silence after Kenta spoke…a weird one. It wasn’t exactly awkward, or uncomfortable, but it was heavy. As if both of them were trying to process what he said, and the events that transpired that day. In all honesty, Kenta was trying his best not to think about it, tho he wasn’t doing exactly a good job. After the standard counseling session and incident report, he tried to just push it down…and now it poured out.

He stayed quiet as Farrin spoke, trying to calm himself down a bit more, a few sniffles and some wiping of the eyes, though he also needed to peel of some of the gel that was mixed with the tears “Yeah…I guess I was able to get his attention alright” he replied with a bitter chuckle, remembering the melee he got into with the villain…it wasn’t the first time someone was attempting to choke him, but probably the first with the serious intent to kill.

After a moment Farrin spoke up again making the obvious point…the guy was a heavy hitter. One of many around town, and it took all sorts of action to stop them, from heroes, police, the works. Some other students got into some pretty gnarly fights as well. With a sigh he said “I…I know…I just can’t shake it of…She was right there in front of me” he said, the image flashing in his head again. He shook it as he said “What the hell is going on… first you had that whole debacle with riots happening cause of whatever Babel is, now these guys…guess villains started to level up just as we rolled into UA huh?” he added with another bitter laugh before adding in a more natural tone “I just…I wanna be ready man. I dunno what more do I need to do…but I'll be damned if I don’t try my hardest to do it!”

arrin considered Kenta's words. He was never the best with this stuff. Sada put on a cold front with outsiders, but she was the warmer of them when it came to comforting friends. Farrin came equipped with a battle brain. His feelings were buried below and had the texture of putty. It was difficult to vocalize. But if he couldn't be there for Kenta, what sort of friend was he?

"It wouldn't be fair o' anyone ta' expect yuh' ta jus' "get over it" n' move on," he emphasized. "Hero or not, that would be some sociopath shite. From what I gather, it takes months at a minimum fer' most ta' start ta' e'en start gettin' better from somethin' like that." Farrin paused, considering all that had happened since his time in UAU. "Jus' know yuh' did what yuh could. It wasn't yer' fault, it was that fecker's. We might not o' been able ta' save her, but wakin up n' choosin' break and kill people is a special kinda crazy. All o' that is on him. Not us. Certainly not you." 

Farrin drew a hand back and set it over his neck, this time thinking on the night of the big villain attack. Yeah, he had to defend a hospital with Zenkai, then fought off some thugs with Peacekeeper, and luckily, found Freja before a group of thugs threatened to finish her off after jumping her. Villainy was growing out of control. That was for certain. 

"Tell yuh' the truth, I see the faces o' those I've failed ta' save in me' sleep. Night o' the villain attack, the girl on the roof," and more, not that he would count off every instance he roamed the streets on patrols he shouldn't have. "It's true, villainy has grown bolder, but I think it makes sense, unfortunately. As generations move on, quirks grow more numerous, n' stronger too. More people wit' quirks, stronger quirks tat that, the more heroes n' villains we end up wit'. We've seen more n' more villains, but hero society is also growin. Like a war o' escalation." 

Cold, hard logic. Things were going to get worse before they got better. Heroism's kryptonite was its responsive nature. You couldn't prevent most crimes, only respond to them, after some damage was done. Until better preventative measures were developed, things would grow more chaotic, even if there were more heroes to respond to that chaos. 

"N' that's why we need ta' keep trainin, become the best we possibly can. We're next out there, so we'll become strong as possibly can be, enough ta' deter villainy wit' our very presence."

Part of Kenta felt a bit bad…partially the cause of breaking down like this, partially dumping it all on Farrin. He knew enough to figure out how shity his friend had it in life, and he just knew in general he was more of a card to his chest type of guy. And now he was making him worry about him.

Yet here he was still trying to help in his way, even if it was stating something he should have known. It's not like they didn’t have classes about this, but it all seemed abstract at the time…and now he had to deal with it “Hell…it just sucks. It Hurts but…I guess there isn’t anything that can prepare you for this stuff huh?” he replied with a calmer voice, managing to peel of what remained on his face.

He was quiet as Farrin spoke about the situation in general. He had a point, things for both sides were getting crazy. Hell, Farrin had a quirk that slowed time, Zen apparently could conjure blasts of energy as big as himself…his quirk felt almost paltry in comparison. “Yeah…stuff is getting crazy. It just seems like…I dunno, first the whole mess in town, then the weather freak…and if I remember right from the news, there were a couple of other freaks that struck on the same day. I dunno, escalating is one thing but these dumbasses almost look organized…”

He did let out a genuine laugh as Farrin spoke again he replied “Hah, managed to wrap it back up to training…you’re the best couch money can buy I sweat to god…but thanks, I…needed to vent, I guess. More than I thought. But you are right. We got to train hard… And do our best like always” he added. Deep down, as much as he wanted to say he would stop something like this from happening again…he knew he couldn’t promise that, to himself or others. And while it did upset him… what he could do is try his darndest to not let it happen.
